Dave Grohl Talks SOUND CITY, the Past and Future of the Music Industry, the Possibility of a Sound City Players Tour, and More at Sundance

Dave Grohl Sound City Interview. Dave Grohl talks about his Sundance documentary Sound City, the music industry, a Sound City Players tour, and more.

Among the films that are premiering at Sundance Film Festival is the documentary Sound City .  Directed by Dave Grohl (of Nirvana and Foo Fighters ), the film is about the legendary Sound City Recording Studios and the equally legendary Neve mixing console it housed.  The film looks at the role of the studio in the stories of many, many current musicians who have helped define the age of rock including Nirvana , Stevie Nicks , Neil Young , Tom Petty , Rick Rubin , Fleetwood Mac and countless others.  The film also features an original soundtrack and performances by many of the artists.

At a press conference Q & A session moderated by Elliot Scheiner (7-time Grammy Award winning music producer/engineer), Grohl spoke about how the film turned from a conceptualized 12 minute short into the full length documentary film.  He also discussed how he feels about the current evolution of music and why the lack of live performance shows and the corresponding wealth of singing contest shows are dangerous for our cultural valuation of music.  According to Grohl, the film will be released in February on the website soundcitymovie.com where patrons can potentially access it for free, because he believes it’s the most important thing he’s ever done.  To read more highlights from the Q & A session, click after the jump.

When asked why he decided to direct the film Sound City, Grohl began by saying first, “I don’t even know what directing means.”  He explained that it was important to him and to all the musicians that recorded there to pay homage to the studio.  He said that recording at the studio would make a band sound like themselves, but “a big, badass version of you.”  The project “was meant to be a short film, then the idea blossomed into something much bigger...the reason I made it is because I’m so passionate about it...I honestly feel like I’m making the movie for the people who are in the movie and the love of music and the appreciation.  It’s not for me, I’m part of the story but it has a lot more to do with other people and musicians and music.”

He insisted that he just began with a clear outline in a notebook he picked up from the craft store Michael’s of what he wanted to accomplish in the film.  “I’m not a director, I’m not a drummer, I’m not a guitar player, I fake all of those things...I can’t read music, I hold my drumsticks backwards.  I’m not a director.”  Grohl also answered the question of whom he wanted that wasn’t in the film.  “ Charles Manson .  We had talked about going up to his...prison?  And interviewing him, but we decided against it because we didn’t want to overshadow the amazing things that have happened [at Studio City].

As far as the possible influence a music documentary can have, he cited the soundtrack of The Decline of Western Civilization as the reason he first wanted to be in a band.  He says it was “so raw and gritty and real and totally captures the vibe of that era and that genre of music.”  He also says that the Paris, Texas soundtrack by Ry Cooder inspired the acoustic album In Your Honor , which he says is “one of my top 3 albums.

Grohl talked about the important of the tactile experience of being able to hold a record as opposed to a digital file, especially for young budding musicians.  He told the story of coming home with the new Beatles boxed set of records for his 6 year old daughter, and the joy of teaching her how to play a record, and seeing “the fact that she could hold Magical Mystery Tour in her hand and it wasn’t an icon on her fucking iTouch thing.”  He says that it’s “the exact same experience any of us had as we were children.  We did the same fucking thing.  The world has changed...the technology has changed but kids, they don’t change, they’re kids.  That same tactile, tangible experience is just as valuable to them now, maybe more so than when we were young.”

Grohl also had a strong opinion when he was asked about the role of instant stardom singing contest shows like The Voice or American Idol .  He said that he’d rather have his child “start music for the love of playing in the garage and play play play with no one listening than to have her stand in line to be on a song contest show and sing one song and have a judge say ‘sorry you’re not good enough’...could you imagine if Bob Dylan went on The Voice?   What would happen?  You got Christina Aguilera going uh uhhhh.”  He dislikes the idea of the shows because he doesn’t think that having a perfect voice or performance determines a good musician.  “My voice cracked or I was flat a little bit or I played too fast..that’s the fucking Who man!”

However, he does believe that there is a place and even a need for live performance shows on television, especially in American culture.  He cites the TV programs around the world that feature live performance, and “summer festival season in Europe, 80,000 people a night...because music is more a part of the collective psyche of the population.”  He finds it a shame that music on TV is relegated to “the Grammys and 12:25 at the end of late night talk shows...if we had more stuff like music documentary or live performance shows people would love music more.”

Grohl does feel that there is a positive today in the music industry, despite the death of his beloved Studio City Recording Studio and the rise of digital music.  “I think the industry is in a better place now than it’s ever been...it’s almost like when Nirvana first signed...back to 1991, because like what the fuck did we need a record label for, really?  We just made cool music and got in a van and went around and played.  We weren’t gonna be the biggest band in the world but you know, it was fun.  [Now] you can record an album in your living room for free and with a click of a button you can distribute it to the entire world.”

As far as distribution plans for his film, Grohl says that it will be a “direct to consumer kind of thing...we’re coming to this festival with a movie that’s finished and ready for everyone to see February 1 st .  You can go to SoundCity.com and get it digital...you can take it you can rip it you can give it to your friends, you can show it on all your devices, whatever.”  He feels that “the most important thing for us is for everyone to see the movie.  Anyone that wants to see it.  If you live in a rainforest and you can’t find a movie theater, you should at least be able to go somewhere and be able to find it like that, because we want to share the message of Sound City.”

As for a Sound City tour?  “We’re trying...what’s nuts is we did the show here the other night, to me it was like an extension of the idea of the film.  You tell the story of Sound City you talk about what it represents but the last third of the film is performance.  Now rather than talk about feel or composition...you see it happening and that speaks volumes.”  He says all the artists had such a good time, they want to do more shows together.  There’s also an album from the film with original music.  He thought, “let’s do a show where every artist does their song from the soundtrack and then we do 4 or 5 of their...songs.  But multiply that by everyone in the movie and you have fucking Woodstock.”  He says that they would want to do as many places as possible, and named possible destinations as L.A., New York, London, Berlin and Sydney.

The Neve mixing console used by all of the artists in the film at one point was sold when Sound City was disbanded, and Grohl is the lucky admirer who purchased the board.  He said that he “would have paid a million dollars for the board, but fortunately it wasn’t that much.”  When asked if the original music for the film was recorded on the Neve mixing console Grohl had an emphatic response.  He stated that not using the board “would be like buying a Ferrari and leaving it in the garage.”

In the end, Grohl’s words of wisdom about the current and future of the music industry were hopeful.  He said “people fall in love with music everyday...making this film can feel a little hopeless.  ‘Oh no!  Rock ‘n’ Roll’s dead!’  But it will never die.  Music will never go away.’

Shepperton Studios

This studio complex in leafy London suburb Shepperton is now part of the Pinewood Studios Group (along with Pinewood Studios and Teddington Studios).

In common with many studios, the former expansive backlot was sold off to raise revenue. Surrounding the studios now is a housing estate, with cinematically-related road names being the only clue to the history.

In July 2019, Netflix was announced as taking over all of the production facilities in a 10 year deal.

From the website: Built around an exquisite manor house, its 14 stages, 10 acres of backlot and thousands of square feet of workshop space, continue to attract the most inspirational content creators. Production support services, a media hub and access to award-winning talent, make Shepperton an ideal base for all types of production.

In the 1930s, when it was known as Sound City, there were two sound stages:

  • Sound Stage No. 1 (80ft. x 45ft.)
  • Sound Stage No. 2 (110ft. x 80ft. with camera and recording rooms and electricians shop).

The Sound City brochure from around 1935/6 says “These stages are provided with modern lighting equipment and the new system of Tubular Scaffolding – 2 Mobile Sound Vans of Marconi Vistatone non-royalty recording; 4 Studio Cameras on “Dollys,” including the latest 1935 model Debrie; Synchronous Back Projection and Play Back.”

Until the expansion (below), stages were:

New £500m expansion opened in June 2023, making it the second biggest studio in the world. The development includes a further 17 stages (around 1.2 million square feet), with all of the new space leased to Netflix and Amazon Prime.

Shepperton Studios History

1689 Local nobleman, Thomas Wood, builds Littleton Park, a mansion house which still stands in the centre of the 60-acre Shepperton site more than 300 years later. The Woods live at Littleton Park for almost 200 years. Their home was grandiose and played host to many royal visitors.

1876 A devastating fire caused damage which took more than 25 years to put right. The house was restored by Sir Richard Burbridge who was the Managing Director of the world-famous department store Harrods, in central London. Burbridge refurbished the house using timber from the original Houses of Parliament.

1931 Norman Loudon, owner of Flicker Productions, buys Littleton Park House (built in 1689) with 60 acres of grounds, including a stretch of the River Ash at Shepperton. The studio facility opened for business in 1932 as the base of Flicker Productions, which produced popular ‘flick’ books of photographs. Mr Loudon had his sights set on full feature film production.

1932 Mr Loudon founds ‘Sound City Film Producing and Recording Studios’. That year, Sound City produced three shorts for MGM and two features (‘Watch Beverly’ and ‘Reunion’)

1934 Studio is renovated providing additional facilities including seven sound stages, twelve cutting rooms, three viewing theatres, scene docks and workshops. During this time the old house is refurnished to provide hotel and restaurant facilities. Plan of the Sound City Lot around 1935 (click to enlarge):

Sound City Studios, 1935

1941 The studio is requisitioned by the Ministry of Defence, first as a sugar storage location, then later to create decoy aircraft and munitions for positioning in the Middle East.

1945 The studio reopens, and changes hands. Norman Loudon retires, and Sir Alexander Korda acquires 74% controlling interest over Sound City.

1946 Sound City is renamed the ‘ British Lion Studio Company ‘

1984 Lee International pays £3.6m for the studios and begin a programme of refurbishment, including the planning and construction of new workshops, completed in 1987. The studio is renamed Lee International, Shepperton .

1995 Ridley & Tony Scott acquire Shepperton.

2001 Pinewood Studios buys Shepperton from the Scott brothers to offer a larger studio complex to incoming productions.

2004 Pinewood Shepperton floats on the London Stock Exchange.

2008 New Gainsborough Building Opens at Shepperton Housing workshops and open plan offices for film and TV productions located at the Studios, the top floor of this 60,000 sq foot building will be available for longer term occupation from companies within the media sector who will benefit from basing all or part of their operation at Shepperton. The completion of the building is a major step in the first phase of Shepperton’s Masterplan, a joint venture with Morley to further develop the Studio’s facilities. Says Pinewood Group’s CEO Ivan Dunleavy “Shepperton’s Gainsborough building will provide a new focal point for the UK’s creative industry, hosting world class film and TV production teams together with leading media specialists. We’re delighted the Culture Minister is attending to mark the occasion.” Margaret Hodge commented “Outstanding productions need the best possible facilities, and this important new base for media companies will help ensure that Shepperton Studios continues to make a vital and sustained contribution to the success of our film, TV and commercial sectors.” More about the Gainsborough Building

UCLA Softball: Bruins Sweep Georgia, Punch Ticket to Oklahoma City

Maren angus-coombs | may 25, 2024.

Taylor Tinsley threw her blue glove down into the dirt, ran to her catcher Sharlize Palacios, and jumped into her arms in celebration as the No. 6 UCLA Bruins punched their ticket to the Women’s College World Series in Oklahoma City with a 6-1 win over the No. 11 Georgia Bulldogs on Friday night.

The moment for Tinsley completed the circle as the sophomore from Lawrenceville, Georgia, slammed the door on several of her former travel ball teammates. She only allowed four hits and struck out six, including Sarah Gordon, to end the game.

"It was a lot of fun to compete against a bunch of my friends," Tinsley told reporters after the game. "I played travel ball with over half the team and I know a lot of them from my hometown too."

When she was asked if the moment was a little sweeter because she was from Georgia, she acknowledged the question with a big grin and announced she grew up a Georgia Tech fan as a kid but did say, "Maybe, a little bit."

When the sophomore committed to UCLA in high school, she turned a lot of heads. The legendary Bruins program had never had a player from the state of Georgia before. Head coach Kelly Inouye-Perez knew Tinsley was a game-changer and wanted to make sure she became part of the “Bruin Bubble.”

"She could have easily stayed close to home," Inouye-Perez said about Tinsley. " shared with her how awesome it would be to be the role model... It is interesting to come back full circle playing against Georgia but Taylor is so much bigger than that.

"I'm very proud of her ability to make a decision both academically and athletically and obviously, we are very proud that she's a Bruin," Inouye-Pereze added. "We've been waiting for this moment. I could picture it. She worked for it. It was awesome just to see her play her game tonight."

Hey OKC, the Bruins are coming back HOME! #GoBruins | #RoadToWCWS pic.twitter.com/c9Uhixb8uI — UCLA Softball (@UCLASoftball) May 25, 2024

As a freshman, Tinsley watched other teams celebrate on UCLA’s home field as the Bruins didn’t win a game in the NCAA Tournament last season. When this season started, the narrative was negative. It was almost like the next chapter picked up where the last one ended. She re-wrote it by putting the team on her back and guiding them to a record 32nd WCWS appearance.

The game wasn’t entirely about Tinsley. Palacios hit two home runs and Maya Brady did her thing as well. But, it was her moment and she deserved to let the spotlight shine on her just a little longer.

"Her pitches have grown, she's stronger, her velocity is better but she’s still the same competitor that we same when she was a ninth grader," said Georgia head coach Tony Baldwin. "I have a lot of respect for Taylor and her family, this was her moment and she shined tonight. I have nothing but respect and congratulations for her."
