Nieuwe/vernieuwde reis:  Niets blijft hetzelfde en ook onze reizen en ons programma veranderen voortdurend. Soms zijn het kleine wijzigingen (een ander hotel, een dagje langer, een iets andere route), dan weer gaat een reis flink op de schop. Soms komen reizen die een tijdje niet uitgevoerd zijn weer terug en vanzelfsprekend voegen we ook nieuwe reizen toe aan ons programma. Als een reis het kopje “Nieuw / Vernieuwd” heeft, betreft het dus een geheel nieuwe reis, een reis die opnieuw is opgenomen óf een reis die in grote mate veranderd is.

Sneeuw & ijs: Eindeloze sneeuwvelden, sprookjesachtige witte bossen, een kraakheldere sterrenhemel of juist uitwaaien in een sneeuwstorm. Wie het geluk heeft het spectaculaire dansende Noorderlicht te aanschouwen, zal dit nooit vergeten. Sawadee biedt meerdere actieve reizen aan naar een winterse omgeving, waarbij – en dit zal niet als een verrassing komen – activiteiten in de sneeuw en op het ijs centraal staan. Chill & Adventure:  Chill & Adventure is de perfecte combinatie van actief een land ontdekken en heerlijk relaxen. Je vakantie begint met een korte rondreis, waarbij je regelmatig actief bezig bent, bijvoorbeeld tijdens een fiets- of wandeltocht. Uiteraard laten we je daarnaast ook een aantal culturele hoogtepunten zien. Tijdens dit deel van de reis worden jullie vergezeld door onze reisbegeleider. 6 tips bij het boeken van een single reis met safari

1. samenstelling van de groep.

Bij de meeste organisaties kun je van tevoren online al zien wat de samenstelling van de groep zal zijn. Deze info vind je meestal kopjes als ‘Data en Prijzen’ of ‘Meer info en boeken’ . Zo krijg je een beter idee van hoe je reisgezelschap eruit zal komen te zien en of dit bij je past.

Overigens kun je je als soloreiziger natuurlijk ook altijd aansluiten bij een gemengde groepsreis . Organisaties als Sawadee en Djoser hebben geen reizen voor alleen singles, maar wel reizen waarbij er minimaal drie alleenreizenden mee gaan. Hoe de groepssamenstelling er precies uitziet, kan je zien onder het kopje ‘Vertrekdata/Prijs’.

2. Grootte van de groep

Ben jij van het type ‘Hoe meer zielen, hoe meer vreugd’, dan zal de groepsgrootte voor jou weinig verschil maken in welke reis je kiest.

Geef je de voorkeur aan een kleiner reisgezelschap om mee rond te touren, neem dan eens een kijkje bij Sawadee , waar 20 deelnemers het maximum is voor de meeste safarireizen.

3. Accommodatie

Vind je het prima om een kamer te delen of heb je liever een slaapplek voor jezelf? Check wat de mogelijkheden zijn en geef bij het boeken aan wat je voorkeur is.

Let op: wil je een eigen kamer, dan kan daar een toeslag voor gelden.

Kijk ook naar wat voor soort accommodatie er wordt aangeboden. Vind je het leuk om te kamperen of slaap je liever in hotels of lodges? Het kan allemaal, dus vergelijk verschillende reizen om te zien wat jou het meeste aanspreekt.

4. Reisprogramma

Lees de dag-tot-dag programma’s om te zien of de rondreis bij je past. 5. Wat is er allemaal inbegrepen?

Kijk goed in de reisbeschrijving wat is inbegrepen bij de reissom. Let bijvoorbeeld op excursies, maaltijden, entreegelden, fooien etc. Hoeveel zakgeld wordt er aangeraden? Wat zijn de boekingskosten ?

Zijn er dingen onduidelijk, vraag er dan naar bij je reisorganisatie. Zo ben je goed voorbereid en kom je tijdens je reis niet voor onaangename verrassingen te staan.

Het voordeel van een single groepsreis dat ze scherp geprijsd kunnen zijn omdat de kosten door meerdere reisgenoten gedeeld worden. Het nadeel is dat er vaak een minimum aantal deelnemers moet zijn om de reis door te kunnen laten gaan.

• Met zoveel mensen om je heen ben je veiliger dan in je eentje. Mocht er iets gebeuren, dan zijn er altijd je reisbegeleider en reisgenoten die je kunnen helpen.
• De entreekosten voor veel wildparken en andere plekken die je wil bezoeken, zijn al inbegrepen in je reis. Omdat de organisatie deze met groepskorting kan regelen, krijg je ze goedkoper dan wanneer je deze zelf zou regelen.
• Misschien wel het grootste voordeel: je reisbegeleider weet je van alles te vertellen over je bestemming. Bijzondere plekken die je anders misschien zou missen, kan hij of zij je zo aanwijzen. What people love about Africa Solo Tours

This tour exceeded our expectations. We were met and greeted at every point of the journey, everything run to clock work and there was no delays in pick ups. We covered an amazing amount of ground and the tour guides were extremely knowledgeable. Nothing was impossible, all requests were met and in fact on many occasions the tour guides / operations people on the ground went the extra mile without being asked. In regard to safety there was never an occasion we were in doubt, and in fact went out shopping on our own. We found the local people in hotels and in the public extremely friendly and respectful. Local vendors when told "No Thank you" they left you alone. the tour guides were a lot of fun and explained subject matter, culture and history brilliantly. They all are considered personal friends and would be all welcome in our home back in Melbourne Australia. We developed a wonderful relationship with truly caring and kind people.

I'm an Australian & travelled with my husband & x2 teenage daughters along with another couple & their teenage sons. I followed the reviews on this tour for approx 12 months prior to travel & some reviews had me rather concerned. I reached out to the manager via email @ Beyond The Nile Tours Ahmed. Ahmed went above & beyond to ensure all of my needs/requests were met & guaranteed that this would be the trip of a lifetime, he did not disappoint. On arrival into Cairo were greeted by Ahmed (another AHMED). I immediately felt at ease with his professionalism & he was very well dressed. I knew straight away we were in good hands. He transported us to the Tolip Golden Plaza Hotel promptly. The hotel is very nice, spacious rooms & very clean. The food was ok (but I am fussy)they have a large buffet for breakfast but note they do not supply or serve alcohol at all in this hotel, it didn't matter to me as I don't drink but it may be an issue to others. Alcohol is not readily available in Egypt at all. It was available on the river cruise but it is not available everywhere in Egypt, worth looking into if you like a drink. The first day of the actual tour started with the pyramids, sphinx & the grand museum. Our tour guide was Hamed, he was very friendly & so funny, he also has a degree in Egyptology, he was full of knowledge. In the evening we opted to take the overnight sleeper train from Giza to Luxor & returned on the train from Aswan to Giza. The train, its not first class, its a rattler, the cabins are very small but clean & the bedding was clean, the staff was friendly, but note the guide does not travel with you on the train, a new guide meets you at the other end. We felt safe, the food was ok, I've had worse & no alcohol is served on the train. It was a definite experience our teenagers loved it, its not the worst thing I have ever done but if your keen for flying throughout Egypt (we weren't) take the flight option instead, you will get a better night sleep. Upon arrival in Luxor we had pre-upgraded our river nile cruise boat to the ACAMAR at a cost to Beyond The Nile Tours. After the sleeper train we were up for luxury & that is exactly what we got on this boat, it was next level, over the top service, our own waiter at out table every day, a pastry chef, it was brilliant service. Definitely worth upgrading to this category if its in your budget. Our tour guide for the 4 night river cruise was Saladino. Saladino studies egyptology & has a real passion for ancient Egypt & he is what I would call top notch, doesn't get much better than him. Saladino went above & beyond for my family & friends & is an absolute cretid To Ahmed & the team & Beyond The Nile Tours. He took photos for us, carried our possessions, lined up for us, put us first in queues, he could not do enough for us & he was just brilliant. He made the holiday so memorable for us & we will truly treasure all the knowledge he shared with us regarding his beloved ancient Egypt. Some advice: There is charges on arrival to the company of US $180 per person, this is for all the entry fees @ the sites & tipping to the drivers, boat people etc. This is actually a small price to pay up front as it is absolute bedlam in Egypt & the guides do it all for you, they line up in the heat in with the crowds to purchase the tickets etc so you don't have to do anything. Book all extra tours through Beyond the nile tours. Their experience/service is next level & always guarantees egyptologists travelling with you Pay the extra money at the valley of the kings to see the tomb of Seti I, it is incredible, was the absolute highlight of my holiday, for an extra charge of approx $70 AUS it was worth every cent. Take US dollars with you, you can't change currency into USD in Egypt so you need to change it before you arrive. Eyptian und is used everywhere however they love the US money better. Overall I would highly recommend this tour, Beyond The nIle Tours gave us everything & more & it was the absolute holiday of a lifetime for us. We are truly grateful to Ahmed & his team, book with confidence you will not be disappointed.

Nieuwe/vernieuwde reis:  Niets blijft hetzelfde en ook onze reizen en ons programma veranderen voortdurend. Soms zijn het kleine wijzigingen (een ander hotel, een dagje langer, een iets andere route), dan weer gaat een reis flink op de schop. Soms komen reizen die een tijdje niet uitgevoerd zijn weer terug en vanzelfsprekend voegen we ook nieuwe reizen toe aan ons programma. Als een reis het kopje “Nieuw / Vernieuwd” heeft, betreft het dus een geheel nieuwe reis, een reis die opnieuw is opgenomen óf een reis die in grote mate veranderd is.

Sneeuw & ijs: Eindeloze sneeuwvelden, sprookjesachtige witte bossen, een kraakheldere sterrenhemel of juist uitwaaien in een sneeuwstorm. Wie het geluk heeft het spectaculaire dansende Noorderlicht te aanschouwen, zal dit nooit vergeten. Sawadee biedt meerdere actieve reizen aan naar een winterse omgeving, waarbij – en dit zal niet als een verrassing komen – activiteiten in de sneeuw en op het ijs centraal staan. Avontuur-Plus:  Terug naar de basis! De cultuurverschillen, de landschappen, de indrukken, de afstanden én het avontuur: deze reizen gaan een stapje verder. Off the beaten track is geen loze kreet. De ene keer was je je in een rivier en is een bladerdak het enige onderdak. Een andere keer klim je uren voor dat ene uitzicht of ervaar je de eindeloosheid van de woestijn. Het kost moeite en tijd om de mooiste plekken te bezoeken, maar de beloning is vaak overweldigend. Voor deze (kampeer)reizen is het belangrijk een flexibele instelling en een gezonde dosis incasserings- en aanpassingsvermogen te hebben. Door het avontuurlijke karakter van de reis kan het programma soms afwijken van wat beschreven is 

22-35 jaar:  Voor de avontuurlijke twintiger die geen zin heeft om er alleen op uit te trekken, bieden we onze eigen 22-35ers reizen aan. In kleine groepen met leeftijdsgenoten maak je onder leiding van de begeleider een avontuurlijke reis.

Langs de oost- en zuidkust tref je prachtige zandstranden aan, elders in het land de hoge toppen van de Drankensbergen en groene landbouwgebieden in de West Kaap. Ook vind je in Zuid-Afrika een aantal prachtige nationale parken, waarvan het Kruger Nationaal Park in het noordoosten een van de bekendste is. 

Naast de Big Five in het Krugerpark, kun je ook oog in oog komen te staan met nijlpaarden en krokodillen. Tijdens een boottocht over het meer van St. Lucia, is er een grote kans dat je deze dieren ontmoet. Een wijnexcursie in Stellenbosch laat je kennis maken met de lekkerste wijnen. Kaapstad tijdens een single reis

Kaapstad staat bekend om zijn relaxte sfeer en vele mogelijkheden. Zowel op cultureel, landschappelijk als culinair vlak ontdek je de grote diversiteit van deze stad. Geniet van een de talloze visrestaurantjes aan de haven, hier is het goed vertoeven na een cultureel dagje Kaapstad. Of breng een bezoek aan Robbeneiland, de gevangenis waar Nelson Mandela jarenlang gevangen werd gehouden door het Apartheidsregime. Een confronterende activiteit, maar zeker de moeite waard.

Kaapstad heeft verder een prachtige ligging en wordt ingebouwd tussen de zee en de gigantische Tafelberg. Een bezoek aan deze stad is daarom zeker niet compleet zonder een beklimming van deze indrukwekkende berg. Ook met een kabelbaan kun je naar de top en genieten van het weidse uitzicht over de stad.

Nijlpaarden spotten in Zuid-Afrika

Als je nijlpaarden wilt zien, dan is een bezoek aan het dorpje St. Lucia een echte must. Dit Zuid-Afrikaanse dorpje ligt vlakbij zee en naast het grote natuurreservaat iSimangaliso. Dit reservaat heeft een unieke natuur van lagunes en moeraslanden en kent een enorme diversiteit aan dieren. Aan de westkant van het dorp leven vele nijlpaarden en krokodillen in een grote lagune. 

Deze dieren zijn zonder twijfel de belangrijkste attractie van St. Lucia en zijn te bewonderen tijdens prachtige boottochtjes door de lagune. Maar er is meer te doen in dit mooie kustplaatsje. In bepaalde jaargetijden zwemmen er talloze walvissen langs de Zuid-Afrikaanse kust. Vanuit St. Lucia kun je een boottocht maken en deze dieren van dichtbij bekijken. Als je 's avonds in St. Lucia terugkomt van een indrukwekkend dagje zee kun je beter geen lange wandelingen maken, de nijlpaarden staan er namelijk om bekend juist dan het water uit te komen en op hun gemak door het dorp te wandelen.

• Een normale basisconditie en een goede mobiliteit zijn noodzakelijk. Je kunt goed en lang lopen en hebt geen moeite met traplopen. Bovendien kun je zelfstandig of met een beetje hulp van een reisgenoot (binnen dezelfde boeking) in en uit vliegtuig, bus, trein, boot e.d. stappen. In Pretoria, de statige bestuurlijke hoofdstad, start je de reis met een geschiedenisles bij het Voortrekker Monument. Het enorme standbeeld van Nelson Mandela zwaait je tegemoet bij het Uniegebouw. Kies je voor een rondreis in de lente? Dan kleurt de stad paars door de duizenden jacarandabomen die in bloei staan, prachtig! Na de stadstour langs het Kruger House stap je in de bus, waarna je de nacht doorbrengt in de omgeving van Mpumalanga.

De spectaculaire Panoramaroute vormt jouw prachtige decor vandaag. Je ziet de dramatische rotsformaties van de Blyde River Canyon. De 26 kilometer lange vallei is één van de belangrijkste natuurwonderen van Zuid-Afrika. Langs de panoramische route bevinden zich uitkijkpunten, die enkele honderden meters naar beneden in de Canyon uitstrekken. Ten noorden van de route liggen de Three Rondavels. Enorme rotsen lijken op paddenstoelen die uit de berg groeien en lijken qua uiterlijk op traditionele Afrikaanse ronde hutten, namelijk Rondavels. Bourke's Luck Potholes is een complex van gladde, cilindrische kuilen en natuurlijke rotssculpturen die gedurende miljoenen jaren zijn uitgehold door watererosie door de Blyde-rivier. Ten zuiden van de route heet een ander spectaculair uitkijkpunt: God's Window. Mits de tijd het toelaat, maak je een stop bij de Graskop Gorge Lift (optioneel te boeken ter plaatse). Deze lift brengt bezoekers 51 meter langs de kloof naar het inheemse bos beneden, waar houten loopbruggen en hangbruggen een pad van 600 meter vormen.

De chauffeur rijdt de comfortabele bus vandaag door het wereldberoemde Kruger National Park, een van de grootste wildparken ter wereld. Wat een verscheidenheid aan diersoorten! Wie weet is het je geluksdag en spot je de complete ’Big Five’. Optioneel: upgrade naar een safari per 4x4 met professionele ranger. Het Kruger Park werd in 1898 gesticht door Paul Kruger om de unieke flora en fauna van de regio te beschermen. Het omvat een gebied van bijna 2 miljoen hectare en grenst aan Mozambique en Zimbabwe. Het ideale seizoen om het wild te observeren is tijdens de wintermaanden van Zuid-Afrika (mei tot september), aangezien het klimaat gematigd en droog is. In de zomer (oktober tot april) worden de meeste jonge dieren geboren. Dus, vergeet je camera en verrekijker niet!

Je reist verder naar het ongerepte, bergachtige koninkrijkje eSwatini. Je doet er een stapje terug in de tijd. Langs de weg zie je diverse marktjes, waar allerlei handelswaren en souvenirs te koop zijn. Je brengt een bezoek aan de Ngwenya glasfabriek/winkel en een traditionele ambachtenmarkt. De rest van de middag heb je ter vrije besteding in de lodge of om het Swazi culturele dorp en het Mantenga natuurreservaat te bezoeken (optioneel te boeken, ter plaatse). Je slaapt in eSwatini.

Een vroege start van de dag, we nemen afscheid van het koninkrijk eSwatini en reizen naar het oudste wildreservaat van Zuid-Afrika, namelijk Umfolozi-Huhluwe National Park. Dit is ook het toevluchtsoord voor de witte en zwarte neushoornpopulatie van Zuid-Afrika. Geniet van een drie uur durende gamedrive in een open safarivoertuig, voordat je incheckt bij je hotel. Net als in Kruger National Park kan je hier op één dag zomaar de 'Big Five' spotten. Door het project 'red de neushoorn' bevindt zich momenteel één vijfde van de populatie zwarte en witte neushoorns in dit park. Let je op beide avonden in het gezellige stadje St. Lucia goed op, de nijlpaarden wandelen hier zomaar over straat!

Ontdek direct na het ontbijt Khula Village en maak kennis met de hedendaagse Zulu-cultuur. Begin bij de WOWZULU-marktplaats bij de ingang van Khula. Je wandelt langs plekken waar het dagelijkse leven zich afspeelt: huizen, scholen, kerken, sangomas (traditionele genezers) en kroegjes. Dit WowZulu-project wordt ondersteund door TUI Care Foundation. De middag is ter vrije besteding. Neem optioneel deel aan de sundowner Boat Cruise op Lake St Lucia. St Lucia is de thuisbasis van een van de grootste populaties nijlpaarden in Zuid-Afrika. Wist je dat er naar schatting zo'n 800 nijlpaarden vrij rondlopen in het gebied? Daarbij komen nog 1200 Nijlkrokodillen en een overvloed aan vogelsoorten. Tijdens deze 2 uur durende boottocht met ondergaande zon, krijg je de kans om deze dieren van dichtbij te zien.

Je volgt de kustroute naar het zuiden. Als de tijd het toelaat, maak je een oriëntatietour door de straten van Durban. Vervolgens ga je naar King Shaka International Airport voor de vlucht naar Kaapstad. Hier heb je een vrije avond.

Vandaag vervolg je de reis naar Montagu langs beroemde wijnvelden. Je maakt eerst een wandeling door het historische centrum van Stellenbosch. Stellenbosch is zonder twijfel een van de mooiste en best onderhouden steden van het land. Veel historische gebouwen bevinden zich in Dorp Street en de aangrenzende straten in de levendige oude stad. Door naar Paarl met het Taal Monument, ontworpen en gebouwd in 1975. Deze ligt op de hellingen van Paarl Rock en is een eerbetoon aan de Afrikaanse taal. Het bestaat uit een reeks verheven obelisken die zijn verbonden door vegende bochten. De reis gaat verder naar de wijnvelden van Franschhoek, het Franse platteland van Zuid-Afrika en de thuisbasis van het Franse Hugenotte-erfgoed. Hier mag een wijnproeverij natuurlijk niet ontbreken.

Je reist naar de Safari Ostrich Farm, een werkende boerderij waar je grote zwermen struisvogels ziet. Tijdens de tractortour leer je meer over deze bijzondere vogels en hun fascinerende natuur. Vanaf hier reis je over de adembenemende Outeniqua Pass en geniet je van het fantastische uitzicht vanaf de Dolphin Point Lookout. Het is een van de meest populaire uitzichtpunten langs dit oostelijke deel van de Tuinroute. Het dankt zijn naam aan het aantal dolfijnen dat regelmatig vanaf dit uitkijkpunt wordt gespot en biedt een fantastisch panoramisch uitzicht op de oceaan. Walvissen worden ook gespot bij Dolphin Point Look Out in de winter tijdens het broedseizoen. In de middag kom je aan in Knysna (spreek uit als ‘Nijzna’), de parel van de Tuinroute.

Geniet van een heerlijke vrije dag in Knysna. Of boek optioneel de excursie naar Tsitsikamma National Park. De ongerepte, inheemse natuur van het Tsitsikamma National Park strekt zich uit van het Outeniqua-gebergte, over kustplateaus en tot aan de Indische Oceaan. Je ontdekt de schoonheid van Tsitsikamma tijdens een wandeling van een klein uurtje naar de monding van de Storms Rivier over de beroemde hangbrug. Op de terugweg naar Knysna verken je Plettenberg Bay. De Portugese ontdekkingsreizigers noemden het de Beautiful Bay, en het is gemakkelijk te begrijpen waarom. Plettenberg Bay is een pittoresk, charmant stadje met kilometers ongerepte stranden, rustige lagunes, schone rivieren, inheemse bossen en een dramatisch rotsachtig schiereiland.

Op naar de zuidkust van de West-Kaap via Mosselbaai met het Bartholomeus Diaz Museum en de ‘Post Office Tree’, letterlijk een postkantoorboom. Het was in dit gebied dat de eerste Europeaan voet aan wal zette in Zuid-Afrika. In het Scheepsvaartmuseum is een winkel waar ansichtkaarten, boeken en souvenirs gekocht kunnen worden. Van juni tot november kan vanaf het museumterrein walvissen waargenomen worden. Op ongeveer 2,5 uur rijden van Kaapstad verken je het pittoreske stadje Swellendam. Dit ligt in de schaduw van het Langeberg-gebergte bij de Breede-rivier. In het verleden voeren stoomboten van hier naar Witsand aan de monding van de Breede-rivier. Naast koolzaad en tarwe speelt de schapenindustrie een belangrijke economische rol.

Je volgt de kustlijn en gaat naar Hermanus, waar je een wandeling door de stad maakt. Hermanus heeft een van de beste plekken om walvissen te spotten ter wereld, met een kustpad dat kilometers ver langs de kustkliffen loopt. Het land zakt scherp af in een diepe baai waar walvissen komen spelen, soms op slechts 20 meter afstand van de kust. De reis gaat verder naar Betty's Bay voor een bezoek aan Stoney Point om pinguïns te zien. Dit is een geweldige plek om deze komische kerels in hun smoking te zien. Aangekomen in Kaapstad, de moederstad van Zuid-Afrika, rijd je rechtstreeks naar Signal Hill voor geweldige uitzichten op de Tafelberg, de stad, de haven, Waterfront, Stadium 2010, de buitenwijken van Green Point & Sea Point en zonsondergangen (als het weer het toelaat).

Vrije dag in schitterend Kaapstad. Enkele tips: het South African Museum, de Kaap Maleise wijk, de Government Avenue en het Green Market Square. Optioneel kun je mee naar de Tafelberg en/of Robbeneiland, vooraf bij te boeken.

De laatste dag is aangebroken, maar er valt nog veel te ontdekken voor je vlucht naar huis. De tour van vandaag voert je door een steeds veranderend landschap van majestueuze bergen, uitgestrekte oceanen, ruige kliffen en inheemse 'fynbos'-vegetatie. De route volgt de Atlantische kust naar de vissershaven van Hout Bay, waar je kunt stoppen om een boottocht te maken naar Duiker Island, de thuisbasis van een kolonie Kaapse zeehonden. De route over de schilderachtige Chapman's Peak Drive gaat verder langs de landelijke dorpjes Noordhoek, Oceanview, Kometjiie en Scarborough naar de ingang van het natuurreservaat Kaap de Goede Hoop. De reis gaat verder door Simonstown waar het Zuid-Afrikaanse marinehoofdkwartier is gevestigd. De badplaatsen Fishhoek en Muizenberg grenzen aan de kustlijn van False Bay en zijn populair vanwege hun stranden in de zomer en het bekijken van Southern Right Whales in de winter. Aan het eind van de dag vertrek je naar de luchthaven van Kaapstad voor de terugvlucht naar Nederland. Aankomst op dag 16.

The Top 10 Safari Lodges in Africa in 2021

This year's World's Best Awards survey was open for voting January 11 through May 10, 2021, as destinations around the world were lifting COVID-19 restrictions. Survey rules have always allowed readers to reflect on their travel experiences over a three-year period. We hope that this year's honorees will inspire your own travels as you get back out into the world.

The Western idea of Africa as a vast unknowable expanse of wilderness — rather than a living, breathing place with as much diversity and unique regionality as any other continent — has endured with stubborn longevity. Perhaps quintessential images like silverbacks in a lush mountain forest, giraffes and acacia trees silhouetted against a savannah sunset, and herds of elephants in the floodplains along a winding river stick with travelers because they are so unlike the nature scenes of the U.S., where centuries of human interference have left little trace of true wilderness or of the animals that once roamed freely.

Africa's rarefied natural spaces have compelled generations of adventurers to seek them out — and the hospitality world has kept pace. Today's safari-goers have little more to worry about than checking off the Big Five and whether to order red or white with dinner. And for the ultimate in service, comfort, and indulgence, they can't go wrong with the places that T+L readers voted onto this year's list of the best safari lodges in Africa.

Every year for our World's Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Hotels (including safari lodges) were rated on their facilities, location, service, food, and overall value. Properties were classified as city hotel, resort, or safari lodge based on their locations and amenities.

The spots on the list are brimming with opulent touches and spectacular scenery. At No. 4 Angama Mara, in Kenya's Masai Mara , two 15-tent camps dot the edge of an escarpment about 300 yards above the game reserve. The views of the Great Rift Valley are so cinematic it's tempting to stay on property and just gawk at the scenery. Don't miss a visit to the on-site craft workshop, where Masai women teach guests the techniques and meaning behind their beading traditions, or the photography studio, where you can test out pro gear and polish up your safari snapshots with cutting-edge photo-editing software.

At No. 6 Singita Grumeti, in Tanzania , the lodging options offer something for every style: crystal chandeliers and gilded frames at Sasakwa Lodge, rattan chairs and campaign tables at Sabora Tented Camp, and breezy furnishings and basketry-inspired light fixtures at Faru Faru Lodge, among others. In South Africa, andBeyond Ngala Safari Lodge (No. 9) has 20 cottages that blend light details — wide-slate bathroom floors, ceramic stools, pale patterned loveseats, high thatched ceilings — with the gravitas of deep-hued wood furnishings, muted flat-weave rugs, and antique-inspired wildlife illustrations. Overall, it feels grounded and traditional, but never stuffy. The property is situated on Ngala Private Game Reserve, which — thanks to the success of andBeyond's conservation work — is now part of Kruger National Park.

Many of the properties on this list held an emotional resonance for our readers, one that lingered long after returning home. Of the Bushcamp Company's Mfuwe Lodge, in Zambia, which came in No. 8, one reader wrote, "I dream about Mfuwe, the people, and the sounds of the animals at night. The experience I had was beyond everything I imagined." Another put it simply: "You truly connect with raw life." A reader who spent time at No. 5 Gibb's Farm, in Tanzania, called it "the most magical place I've ever stayed!" And at Sasaab, in Kenya, the property's do-good efforts made a mark just as much as the luxe environment: "Sasaab's culture is fabulous," a reader wrote of the No. 10 property, adding that "the hotel has an innate sustainable ethos."

But the best safari lodge in Africa, the Richard Branson–owned Mahali Mzuri, brings together every element readers expect in their experience, then amplifies it all tenfold. Read on to find out why it's so beloved and which other lodges join it on this year's list.

1. Mahali Mzuri, Masai Mara, Kenya

The 12-suite Mahali Mzuri sits on the edge of a lush bowl, and there's not a bad seat in the house: over breakfast, you can watch monkeys scrabble in the trees and grass; from the pool you'll spot giraffes wandering through to snack on the acacias; sitting on your private terrace you may catch a glimpse of a cat stopping to drink from the rocky stream that runs through. And the property's location is ideal for maximizing both wildlife spotting and privacy. It's set within the private, 33,000-acre Olare Motorogi Conservancy, which is part of the Masai Mara ecosystem but beyond the bounds of the national park. That means all the richness of big game, but no other cars in sight—you can get within feet of a lion pride and have the moment all to yourself, with no jockeying for position or tuning out the chatter of other safari-goers. "Mahali Mzuri is the best luxurious camp to visit on the African continent," declared one reader; "just perfect," wrote another. The team is small and familial, with the kind of warm, relaxed — yet flawless — service that gives guests the easy sense of being among friends; the guides are among the best in the business, many having worked at the property for years to develop intimate knowledge of the land and its wildlife. One reader put it best: "The hospitality at Mahali Mzuri resembles its name," he wrote, noting the translation of the Swahili: "the Beautiful Place."
