Road Trip from Guwahati to Shillong

Beside the mighty Brahmaputra river lies the biggest city in Assam – Guwahati. It is often regarded as the gateway to all of North-East India. The plains of Guwahati are not without their own charms – like the magnificent Kamakhya Temple, sunset by the Brahmaputra, and other city attractions like its many cafes and food outlets. What makes it even more exciting is a serene road trip from Guwahati to.. well, anywhere in the North East of India – Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Tripura, Mizoram, and also Meghalaya – the capital of which, is Shillong.

Also known as the ‘Scotland of the East, Shillong’s sheer beauty, authentic food, and warmth make it a well-loved destination. This teeming city boasts of lush hills, stunning waterfalls, languid lakes, and a melting pot of cultures within it. Not just that, the rolling hills, breathtaking landscapes, and some of the best sceneries of Meghalaya only add to making your drive from Guwahati a memorable experience.

Road trip from Guwahati to Shillong

I’ve explored India quite extensively by road, and this July, I took my maiden trip to the North East from Goa. Having done dozens of road trips in the past, I have the car-booking process down to the T, but this time, I had a curveball thrown my way. I had initially booked a Zoomcar in Guwahati weeks before my trip (the earlier you book, the better the rates are, and the more car options you have) but 24 hours before I was to fly, they emailed me with a cancellation, giving no concrete reason why.

I’ve had bad experiences with Zoomcar in the past, too, and as annoyed as I was, I had to begin the hunt for a rental car in the middle of a workday, with only a day to spare for my trip. On a side note, Zoomcar has been permanently kicked out of any future travel plans I make.

So there I was, mentally preparing myself to have to spend up to 10,000 INR more for a last-minute car rental booking, when I came across a brand called FuFu Gadi. To my surprise, I found options for brand-new cars (barely 6 months old) at a significantly lower cost than the Zoomcar I booked weeks ago, even though I was booking at the eleventh hour.

The next day, I boarded my first flight of the day from Goa to Delhi – a journey of 2.5 hours.  A 2-hour stopover in Delhi ensued, followed by another 3-hour flight to Guwahati. To put that into perspective, I left home in Goa at 11 AM and walked out of Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, Guwahati at 8 PM on the dot.

Our rental car from FuFu Gaadi was outside the airport, and we were in it and on our way, less than 10 minutes later. The car was in immaculate condition, clean as a whistle, and the handover procedure was extremely swift. I’ve booked several cars with Zoomcar and MyChoize over the years, and not once was the process as seamless as it was with FuFu Gaadi. I’d highly recommend the brand if you’re traveling in the North East!

How to get from Guwahati to Shillong?

After having spent the entire day in a plane, we did not want to drive another 20km to Guwahati city center for dinner and to find a place to crash for the night. So we drove around the vicinity of the airport looking for a place to stop for a quick meal and a comfortable hotel. We stopped at Grill Republica (Azara) to eat, and after finding 2-3 hotels at full occupancy, we settled for a decent hotel called Hotel Pamil Residency for Rs. 1600 a night. A clean bed and a good washroom were the only necessities for the night, which Hotel Pamil Residency had.

At 9 AM the next morning, after catching up with work, we set out to Shillong.  At a distance of 120 km from Guwahati, the drive to Shillong takes 2-3 hours on average – child’s play! Wide roads in great condition will see you through most of the journey, until you begin the uphill, winding climb to Shillong. With narrow and steep highways carved through the hills, this meandering road is an adventure in itself! The National Highway 6 connects Guwahati to Shillong and the road comes with a scenic view of the sky-kissing pines and hills of northern Meghalaya.

There’s no real need for taking a break on this 3-hour drive, but it’s always a good idea. We stopped at a place called Highway Dhaba Two, which had extremely clean washrooms, average food, and bad tea. You can grab a hot meal and buy packaged snacks to tide you through the rest of the journey.

What places can you visit on your drive from Guwahati to Shillong?

Your drive from Guwahati to Shillong covers many aesthetic and renowned spots where you can stop for a quick photoshoot or a meal. Here are three places you can consider visiting on your Guwahati-Shillong road trip:

The Breathtaking Barapani 

Also known as Barapani, the famous Umiam Lake of Shillong will charm you. It spreads over 200 sq km and boasts an unforgettable rich blue hue. Wrapped by green all along its banks, the magnificent lake in all its grandeur really brings out Meghalaya’s natural beauty. If you do not have the time to enter the lake premises, make a quick stop on the highway on your way to Shillong. Y

ou can bask in the majestic view that this spot provides and pair it with a cup of hot tea. Its popularity makes it home to plenty of make-shift stalls selling fresh fruits, vegetables, and local pickles. A stop at this lake really sets the mood for the rest of your adventure from Guwahati to Shillong.

Boating at Umiam Lake

Umiam Lake is an artificial waterbody on the way to Shillong. If you can spare the time to do it, consider a pit stop at this picturesque spot. Its gorgeous landscape dotted with tree-covered hills that merge with the clear Meghalaya sky will have you mesmerized. Consider taking a small snack break here or indulge in boating if you have more time on your hands. There are boating and speed-boating provisions available at the lake, along with a small restaurant if you wish to grab a bite. 

Pickle-Pineapple-Squash shopping at Nongpoh

Nongpoh is a dreamy little village on your way from Guwahati to Shillong. Apart from its quaint beauty, it is also well-known for its impressive collection of locally made pickles, and home-grown pineapples and squashes.

A lot of local commuters, including myself, can vouch for the sweetness of Meghalaya’s pineapples and squashes, especially the ones found in Nongpoh, for they are one of the finest in the region. Apart from that, if you are a fan of pickles – do consider buying a jar. In Nongpoh, you will find a variety of pickles made from vegetables, chilies, pork, and beef at stalls on either side of the highway. These flavourful preparations will have you coming back for more.

Your drive serves as an exciting trailer for the adventures that will follow. You get a peek into the natural beauty of Meghalaya, the traffic-choked streets of Shillong, the succulent food that awaits you, and the vibrant cultural diversity of North East India. Once you are in Shillong, that’s where your adventure begins. Depending on your preferences, you can just explore the city or visit other destinations nearby.

Within Shillong, you can shop at the Police Bazaar, spend a day at the stunning Ward’s Lake, pack a lunch and a book to spend a day at the Lady Hydari Park, or indulge in a sumptuous meal at the City Hut Dhaba. If you want to explore more of Meghalaya, Shillong makes places like Cherrapunjee, Dawki, and Laitlum really accessible. Cherrapunjee & Dawki Road Trip from Shillong (Updated)

Shillong, also referred to as the “Abode of the Clouds” left us mesmerised at the beauty on offer. A trip to Shillong can never be completed without adding on Cherrapunjee & Dawki to the itinerary, which is what we exactly did. Both Cherrapunjee & Dawki are day road trips from Shillong and the best way out is to spread out the visit over 2 days to enjoy both places to the fullest.

The Cherrapunjee diaries:

Cherrapunjee is a high altitude sub-divisional town in the East Khasi hills district in the Indian state of Meghalaya. A sub two hour drive from Shillong makes it one of the most important places to visit for tourists. Cherrapunjee is credited to being the wettest place on Earth and holds the all time record for the maximum rainfall in a calendar month and year. Original name of ‘Sohra’ eventually evolved into the current name of Cherrapunjee – Meaning ‘Land of Oranges’. Notable places to visit in Cherrapunjee include the famous Living root bridges, waterfalls, deep valleys and various caves.

Starting early, we proceeded straight to one of the most arduous as well as mesmerizing sights – The Double Decker Root bridge. The journey from Shillong to Tyrna village (Nongriat) – the starting point for the Double Decker Root bridge, offers some unique landscapes very pleasing to the eye. From patches of pasture lands to cliffs to deep forests all coupled by the plains of Sylhet (Bangladesh) at the distant horizon – it indeed speaks volumes of the enchanting beauty the North East has to offer. All along the journey, we were accompanied by deep mist of clouds and alternate bursts of clear sunny skies.

Double Decker Living Root Bridge – Located in the thick tropical forest of Meghalaya, cloaked with rain for most part of the year lies the fantastic man made & natural wonders of the living root bridges. Created by the people of Khasi tribe, these roots grow from ancient rubber trees in the form of bridges due to the entanglement of roots. Some of the famous living root bridges include Umshiang Double Decker Root bridge , Ummunoi Root Bridge , Ritymmen Root Bridge , Umkar Root Bridge & Mawsaw Root Bridge. We decided to visit the holy grail of root bridges – Umshiang Double Decker Root Bridge. This renowned sight beckons outdoor enthusiasts with an opportunity to see a 150 year+ old man-made natural wonder that’s not only unique but astounding. Almost 3 kilometers of steep trekking one way constituting 3,500 steps and a descent of 2,400 feet, this trek is surely not for the faint hearted. Pro Tip: It is imperative physical condition be taken into account before initiation of this trek which usually takes 5-6 hours to complete. However, the destination is well worth the entire journey. The endless trail of steps took us further and further into the forest. Jack fruit trees were growing wildly amidst the jungle of vegetation.

Crossing a couple of hanging steel bridges over the crystal clean water over rain fed rivers. This is the part of the trek which makes it memorable. The whole bridge is made of rusty iron cables supported with bamboo which shakes and swings with the sight of the river with mighty boulders flowing around 25-30 feet below. Some last round of trek later, we finally chanced upon the much awaited Double Decker Living Root bridge with its gnarly thick roots covered in moss.

The surroundings were serene (only to be interrupted by shouts from fellow travelers) with waterfalls, natural swimming pools, clusters of butterflies, shoal of fish (do try the free fish spa!) mysterious sounds of the forest and so much tranquility and peace. After soaking in the atmosphere for a couple of minutes, we began the task of returning to the starting point. Do hold on to your nerves for the return trek. However, the exceptional encounter with nature is what we treasure the most.

After finishing the trek within 4 hours and having a sumptuous lunch, we proceeded next to visit one of the highest waterfalls in India – Nohkalikai falls , Cherrapunjee. Gushing down from a height of 1100 feet, this waterfall is indeed one of the most visited tourist attractions. A short trek led us to the point from where the panoramic view of the Nohkalikai falls cascading down into a pool like formation can be affluently seen. Noh Ka Likai in local Khasi tribe language means ‘The Leap of Likai’ which translates to a rather sad story of a widow and her daughter. Legend says the widow re-married such that her daughter could get the love of a father. However, the newly wed husband could not stand the daughter and incidents leading to honor killing of the daughter led to the widow to take the leap and give up her life.

Having witnessed one of the most surreal sunsets over the Nohkalikai falls and basked in the wonder of the natural Double Decker living root bridges, we made our way back to our home-stay in Shillong to crash in for the night. Do join us for the third chapter of our trip to Dawki.

The Dawki diaries:

Dawki is a small border town nestled in the West Jaintia hills of Meghalaya. A short 2.5 hour drive from Shillong, the Dawki-Tamabil border crossing between India and Bangladesh is a tourist hot-spot and a must visit for a day outing. Trivia: The new Guwahati-Shillong-Dhaka bus service flagged off by PM Narendra Modi and Bangladeshi counterpart Sheikh Hasina uses this route. However, no sight of border fencing or large battalions of BSF Jawans implied Dawki – Tamabil border to be a ‘Friendly Border’. That said, the relaxed atmosphere is also prone to undocumented, illegal migration (certainly a big issue for India’s North-Eastern states currently). However, all the politics can be brushed aside considering the beauty of the river Umngot – which flows through Dawki. Considered as one of the cleanest rivers in India, Umngot river forms a natural divide between the Jaintia & Khasi hills. In fact, the water of river Umngot is so crystal clear, that seen from distance, it appears the boats are floating in mid-air. The single span suspension bridge hanging over the Umngot river adds to the charm of the place.

The Umngot river has over the years developed into a prime venue for both trade and transport across borders as well as tourism. The Umngot itself is a prime fishing spot for fishermen from adjoining areas. The emerald green color of the river dazzled under the sun and was equally accentuated by the colorful boats lined up along its shores. Gliding down the river in a snake boat is one of the must activities to be done at Dawki. The river bed was strewn with deep round pebbles and stones of various shapes. Around the glistening river were many mysterious alcoves – with their moist walls and tiny grooves. The only sounds of the valley were the gentle swishing of the river and melodious calls of the birds. After a short trip upstream, we returned back to the starting point – also known as the Jaflong Zero Point (where River Umngot crosses over to Bangladesh). The boat ride on the emerald green waters of Umngot was accompanied by the usual chatter of the Khasi boatman who provided further evidence of the intermingling border population. Overall, the experience was one to cherish for a lifetime.

Winding up by mid afternoon, we made our way back to the city center of Shillong to catch up on the festive spirit offered by the Christmas eve. The journey from Dawki to Shillong is such a splendid drive passing through deep gorges and ravines. The West Jaintia hills added a touch of finesse to the entire journey. The rays of sunshine peeping through the vast expanses of clouds floating across the winter sky made the journey worthwhile. Equally inter-spaced were meadows and grasslands whom we were flying past. There are a number of viewpoints across the entire route which offers breath-taking views of the green hills. Before continuing to spend the evening exploring Shillong, we had some piping hot Aloo sabzi and Parathas for our lunch across one of the tiny dhabas adjoining one of the viewpoints.

Shillong has lots to offer in terms of places to visit – Ward’s Lake, Elephant Falls, Shillong viewpoint, Lady Hydari park, Police Bazaar, museums and much more. We first made our way to Wards Lake – a scenic green park with flowering gardens in the Lachumiere area of Shillong. The enclosed lake also offers boating. After spending time till dusk, we made our way to the most happening place of Shillong – Police Bazaar.

Police Bazaar is the most tourist friendly market of Shillong. In addition to the array of restaurants, hotels and big brand stores, the bazaar also houses a flea market section which is pocket friendly and draws maximum number of tourists to the traditional handicrafts stores, exquisite Meghalaya merchandise, regional apparels, junk jewelry and the likes. What’s better to walk hand in hand in the hustle bustle of the narrow by-lanes of the market and do some shopping? Highly recommended is a visit to Hotel Center Point – one of the most iconic landmarks of Police Bazaar. The views from atop ‘Cloud Nine’ was exquisite to say the least. The entire town decked up for Christmas and the lanes choc-a-bloc with traffic gave us the true feel and essence of visiting Shillong.

Shillong is in entirety one of the hidden gems of Meghalaya & one of India’s most sought after tourist destinations. Shillong’s colonial charm & immense natural beauty is a paradise for nature and heritage lovers alike. The three day trip to Shillong will be etched in our memories for times immemorial.

Guwahati to Shillong: A Picturesque Road Journey.

With sparkling waterfalls, undulating-picturesque hills, limestone caves, and idyllic parks 1,496 meters above sea level, Shillong lies in the lap of mother nature. Known as the Scotland of the East, Shillong is a heavenly abode.

The pristine woods will fill the void of your heart with happiness. Shillong receives the highest rainfall in the world and looks more lively during monsoons. Considering heavy rains are not favourable for road trips, we planned our expedition in the month of September when the rain is scant and the place is still very enjoyable.

The 99-km Guwahati-to-Shillong road trip is a 3-hour journey and is teeming with breathtaking scenery. We took the NH40 route, which is well connected and maintained. It drizzled lightly while we were travelling, which was enthralling and soothing.

On the GS Road, we took a short break and had refreshments at a local eatery and commenced our road trip.

Places To Visit In Shillong

Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya, houses exciting places enthralling mountain peaks, museums that preserve and reflect Shillong history and culture, beautiful landscapes, waterfalls and more. It took us 3 hours 15 minutes to reach Shillong from Guwahati and we took a short halt and started exploring the ebbs and depths of mystic Shillong.

Ten kilometres from the north of Shillong lies a spectacular man-made reservoir that generates hydroelectric power to cater to the State’s electricity needs. The dam led to the formation of the beautiful Umiam Lake surrounded by the lush greenery of the East Khasi hills. We picnicked at a park adjoining the lake, went on a boat ride, clicked amazing pictures and watched the beautiful sundown. The eye-catching flora and fauna around the reservoir include coniferous forests sprawled over 222 square kilometres of land. We sat back and savoured the Gulmohar trees and the pleasant winds, and observed the daily life of the natives who came to the river for foraging twigs and grass, and fishermen paddling in the steady waters.

There are provisions for pedal boating, water scooter ride (5 to 10 minutes), speed boat, river bus ride (20 to 60 minutes) and water skiing at the lake from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. 

Elephant Falls

The next day, we visited the most popular waterfalls in the country, Elephant Falls, which is 8 km from the city centre. During colonial rule, the British named these waterfalls after the elephant-shaped rock at the foot of the waterfalls. You don’t get to look at this elephant-like stone anymore as it was lost to an earthquake years ago. The locals now call these falls “Ka Kshaid Lai Pateng Khohsiew,” meaning the three-step waterfalls.

There are three waterfalls layered in succession, accessible to people from different vantage points. The top-most step of the waterfall is very broad and crammed between dense forests, the second step waterfall has thin waters that go obsolete during winters and the third step of the waterfall is the tallest with clear and milky-white water cascading from the black stones. We are in awe of these impressive waterfalls, especially the third step. This place also makes a great backdrop for pictures and will act as a great canvas for photography enthusiasts.

Shillong Peak

Towering at a height of 6,449 ft and 1,965 m above sea level, Shillong Peak is the highest point in Shillong. From this point, you can get a panoramic view of the entire city, the Himalayas and the Bangladesh plains. Telescopes are made available at this peak for the tourists to get a 360-degree view from the peak. We trekked our way to this amazing peak. Check the weather before scaling the peak, as the place may experience heavy snowfall and can be quite risky to climb.

It is believed that Shillong got its name from this peak and that the patron deity Lei Shyllong lives in this peak and protects the people from all evils. Rituals are conducted at a U Shulong site at this peak as it is considered sacred and spiritual. As the peak situated at the airforce base it houses the radar station of the Indian Air Force due to which high-security checkings are made at the entry point to the peak, so you need to carry a valid id proof with you.

Don Bosco Museum

If you want to learn the culture and tradition of North East India, you ought to visit Asia’s largest Museum of Indigenous Cultures, Don Bosco Museum, in the Mawlai area. The museum has 16 galleries showcasing artefacts, figurines, and paintings related to Northeastern culture in a seven-storey building. We experienced the local culture and got insights into the living and lifestyles of North-East people.

Prominent people from across the world, like the princess of Thailand, have visited this museum. The Don Bosco Museum also exhibits high architectural artwork with its hexagonal shape and is referred to as Shillong’s architectural pride. Art competitions are often held at this museum, so you will see many writers, artists, musicians, and lyricists from different parts of the country at this museum.

The museum is open from Monday to Saturday (9:00 am to 5:30 pm) during summers, and Monday to Saturday (9:00 am to 4:30 pm) in winters (December 1 to January 31). Entry fee is Rs. 100 for adults, Rs. 50 for students, and Rs. 200 for foreigners.

Ward’s Lake

Ward’s Lake is a simple yet popular picnic spot lying in the heart of Shillong; several locals and tourists come to this lake to unwind and spend time with loved ones. The lake is shaped like a horseshoe and is also known as Pollock’s Lake. We loved sitting near the lake and watching the colour play of flowerbeds and listening to the bird’s chirps. There is a small bridge created on the lake from where you can feed the fishes and watch. Paddle boating is also available at the lake.

The lake is open from 8:30 am to 5:20 pm during November to February, and 8:30 am to 7:00 pm during March to October. Entry fee for adults is Rs. 10 and for kids it is Rs. 5.

David Scott Trail

If you have an appetite for trekking, then you must scale the 16-km long David Scott Trail from Mawphlang to Lad Mawphlang. The trail has popular villages with rich culture, history and folklore. Directions to navigate the trail are not available. You have to ask locals to help you with this. There are breathtaking landscapes, rivers, cascading waters, massive rock formations, meadows and water streams along the trail, to keep you going.

If you start at the Mawphlang village, you will traverse through windy hills, mountains, and valleys. Take a short break at Ka Kor Ka Shonmai, explore the tomb of Camilia, experience the thrill of the hanging bridge over river Umain and listen to the folklores on the way to Lad Mawphlang.

Lady Hydari Park

Lady Hydari Park is the most popular park in Shillong, named after the first lady of Assam. The entrance of the park has a Japanese style garden that will catch the attention of the visitors. The round-shaped hedges and willow trees keep up the vibe of the park and connect to nature.

There is a small lake in the park where you can find ducks and colorful small fishes. There is a playing area for kids and the museum, zoo, and boating activities in the park which keep both kids and adults entertained. Even a leisurely stroll to the park on the paved walkways and manicured lawns is an experience in itself.

Sweet Falls

Located at 5 km from Happy Valley in Shillong, Sweet Falls is the steepest, most beautiful waterfall in India. But don’t let the name ‘Sweet Falls’ trick you because this mesmerizing waterfall is notoriously dangerous. The route to the falls is treacherous. The slippery stones make it even worse. Don’t plan a visit to this waterfall during monsoons . There are some stories of hauntings linked to this place. The locals say that people who visit these falls in odd numbers will return in even numbers.

The verdant greenery, butterfly museum, and a mini zoo at the waterfalls are also worth visiting. Government has restricted the place for visits for a while and marked the place as a danger zone due to accidents. With good safety measures and caution, you can make the most of this serene and amazing waterfall. Note, do not plunge into the waterfalls and wear slip-resistant shoes.

The vehicle entry fee for this falls is Rs. 70 and it takes 2 hours to tour the waterfalls.

There are countless museums in Shillong that preserve and feature the indigenous culture and history of Shillong. Every museum has its own grandeur; out of the wide list of museums in Shillong, The Butterfly Museum, Wankhar Entomology Museum, The Arunachal State Museum, Meghalaya State Museum, and the Rhino Museum are must-visits.

Shillong is a spellbindingly beautiful city, and you need to invest time to explore this magical place.

4-day Shillong Travel Itinerary for First Time Travellers

Shillong travel itinerary is going to come in handy if you are planning to visit this beautiful capital of the northeastern state of Meghalaya. Meghalaya is a place where you need to be if you h ave ever desired to get close to nature and greenery fascinates you.

A well-defined Shillong travel itinerary will help you explore the best of what this place has to offer. The lush green mountains, lakes, waterfalls, valleys and picturesque villages embellish this place and make it a perfect destination for travellers.

Although many places in India’s northeast are surreal, some of them are quite harsh and inaccessible. Shillong is a place where people of all ages can easily travel and spend quality time. In my current blog, I will share with you a four-day Shillong travel itinerary based on my extensive visits to the region.

Shillong Travel Itinerary

The beauty of Meghalaya needs no introduction. Meghalaya meaning the abode of the clouds is an interesting as well as enriching place to explore. It is the wettest region in India, and Cherrapunjee ( another visitor attraction around 50 km distance from Shillong ) holds the record for the highest rainfall on the planet.

The beauty of Shillong was noticed by early European settlers who named it “Scotland of the East” . Shillong travel itinerary can give you a gist of the flavour that you might experience in the whole state. One can also think of it as the start of exploring the North-Eastern part of India

Although, you can spend countless days in Shillong amidst nature, here I will provide you with a 4-day Shillong travel itinerary. Below is a brief overview of my day wise Shillong trip itinerary.

The Complete Itinerary for Traveling to Shillong

In the following paragraphs, I will introduce you to the places to visit on your Shillong travel itinerary. This will benefit you and you won’t waste time charting a plan on where to go next.

Day 1 of My 4-Day Shillong travel itinerary

It is a good idea to start early in the morning from Guwahati. I travelled to Shillong from Guwahati, so I am taking that as my starting point. If you are starting an afresh trip, it will depend on your flight or train timings. In that case, I would suggest booking a transport option that reaches Guwahati in the morning. The approximate distance from Guwahati to Shillong is 100 km and it would take more or less 2.5-3 hrs.

Before entering Shillong, you will come across Umiam lake. The lake is also known as Borapani Lake locally. It is a man-made lake in the lap of the hills with a mesmerizing backdrop. The size of the lake will leave you awestruck.

There are opportunities for boating on the lake. There are also different water sports for adventure lovers like water skiing, high-speed boat and yachting. A Pedal boat ride on the lake is absolutely worth it if you want to enjoy the ambience in a leisurely way.

The rates of several water sports at Umiam Lake are given below. Note that these are approximate charges and can change with the season.

After the break at Umiam lake , continue on your onward journey to Shillong. After checking-in, to the hotel (or hostel) the rest of the day can be spent exploring the locale and hiring a car (taxi fares given ahead) for the next few days.

I suggest you head out and explore the food junctions at Shillong. Food is something that connects you to the place and gives you a true feel of its roots. Wherever you travel, it becomes an important part of the travel experience and builds up a connection between you and the place.

As I had already mentioned, the North East has a different culture and flavour.  As you enter Shillong, you will surely feel it. The bazaar areas have innumerable stalls of street foods, that sell local delicacies at a reasonable price. If you are a meat-lover, this is the place to be.

Also, there are a number of restaurants, where you can go for a more conventional meal system. Use of bamboo shoots in cooking is a characteristic in this part of the country. You can try the commonly found Chicken with bamboo shoots. There are also several other conventional and vegetarian-friendly places available.

The entire road from Guwahati to Shillong is beautiful. I took this picture in Borapani, a border town between Assam and Meghalaya.

Day 2 of My 4-Day Shillong Travel Itinerary

On day 2 of your trip, you can go sightseeing in and around Shillong. I started my day by visiting Shillong Peak . While most of it is motorable, the last few steps have to be walked through. It is not a difficult walk and people from all age groups can reach the place easily

Morning is the best time is best to visit Shillong peak. It is the highest point in and around Shillong and from this point, you can see the city from a distance. It is around 1900 metres from sea level and people go there to get a panoramic view of the place. You can also see the Bangladesh plains from up here. Sometimes you might find heavy fog at times, but I highly recommend this.

If you are a passionate photographer like me, you are in for a treat. Look for beautiful Himalayan birds on your way.

There are beautiful parks and waterfalls in Shillong which can be visited during the day. Lady Hydari Park, Golf course and Wards Lake are a few you can visit. One important fall around Shillong is the Elephant falls . It is a beautiful waterfall and it continues in several tiers. This is one of the most popular places around Shillong and you might find a number of tourists posing for a photograph in front of the falls.

The afternoon can be spent exploring the local museum and churches of Shillong. There are a number of museums in Shillong. Arunachal State Museum, Meghalaya State Museum and Wankhar Entomology museum are a few you can visit. There is also a beautiful church very near to the city centre, the Cathedral of Mary Help of Christians. The gothic style architecture along with lush green lawns particularly caught my attention.

The best time to visit Shillong peak is early morning. This is the highest point in Shillong. You can see the entire town from up here.

Day 3 of My 4-Day Shillong Travel itinerary

On the third day, we headed to the David Scotts trail near Shillong. It is an easy trek only a few km away from the city, with amazing views of lush green nature. The hike, although easy, is quite a long one. It is a 16 km stretch with a gentle slope. Guides will be available from the hotel if you need one.

There is a stream which needs to be crossed in between, so you need to be careful. Wear good shoes for the trek .  Since I’d had a bad experience with shoes earlier, this time I carried along with trekking shoes that I got at a great deal. Luckily they turned out well too.

Also, be careful of undulating roads and leeches (more common in rainy seasons). Since the rainy season will make the stones and boulders slippery, it is better to avoid this time. Again, if you are an experienced trekker, you can opt for the same.

A n Alternate Option for Day 3 of Shillong Trip Itinerary: Mawlynnong

An alternate option would be visiting Mawlynnong. Mawlynnong is a beautiful small village around 80 km from Shillong. Dubbed as the cleanest village in Asia, the striking aspect of the village is its women-centric society. The village thrives on the harvesting of betel nuts and almost all work is performed by women. While most tourists skip it due to lack of time, this can be an interesting activity on the Shillong travel itinerary.

Just before reaching Mawlynnong, there is a small village called Riwai. A small trek in Riwai can lead you to a wonder of nature, the Root Bridge . This is the only place in India where you will find living root bridges. It is the phenomenon of the roots of trees acting like bridges across the stream. The trek although not a very easy one, can be completed by people of all ages. (If you are going to Cherrapunjee as a next stop, you will also find root bridges there as well.)

When I saw the movie “Avatar” recently, I was reminded of the root bridges of the North East. Never in my wildest imagination, had I thought that only roots can make routes across a stream. To me, it signifies the flow of life, the flow of spontaneity. It denotes the spiritual connection that runs across all of Nature and within all its creatures.

Mawlynnong has several homestays and if you would like, you can spend a night here. One of the guesthouses (Llajong Guest House) also has a treehouse as accommodation which is a fascinating place and is worthy of spending some time.

Mawlynnong has been awarded Asia’s cleanest village. On the way to the village make sure to see the natural root bridges at Riwai.

Day 4 of the 4-Day Shillong Travel Itinerary

This was my last day at Shillong. We checked out of the hotel with a packed lunch and headed towards the Cherrapunji . There are going to be a few pit stops along the way. The first one can be a viewpoint for the valleys of Khasi hills. As far as you can see, there are overlapping green valleys. It is one point not to be missed and after returning from the trip, this one will be a treasured photograph.

Make your second stop at a famous waterfall – the Nohkalikai Falls . The falls have made it to the cover of many travel magazines. Although there is a conventional gate to enter the viewing point (for which you have to pay), the waterfall can be seen from quite a distance. It also has an interesting but unfortunate story associated with it.

After spending an hour at the place with a small snack, you can head to another place close by which is the Nohsngithiang or Seven Sisters falls. Although the name is ‘Seven Sisters’ you will not be able to actually find seven falls, unless you are visiting during the monsoons. If you want to see these waterfalls at their full roar, visit during monsoons.

As you enjoy the wondrous Khasi hills and the beauty of nature, evening approaches. Watch the sunset across the fields and crimson light enlightens the sky across the hills. It is time to enter Cherrapunjee.

Many people just visit Cherrapunjee like a sight-seeing on a to-and-fro basis from Shillong. It is actually possible, however, that the essence of Cherrapunjee will be better absorbed if you stay at the calm of Cherrapunjee  Holiday Resort for a couple of nights.

If I had to rate the budget aspect of my trip to Shillong, I would say that it was moderate. The important thing to remember when travelling in the hilly regions is that the costs of transportation are typically going to be high, owing to the difficult terrain and inadequate public transport.

I realized that we could have cut down on the costs way more if we were travelling in a group of four or five . Below is the breakdown of the costs we incurred on the trip.

The landscape around Shillong is truly stunning. The best way to observe and enjoy this beauty is to hire a full day Taxi. The taxi will take you to different points of interest in and around Shillong. You can hire one easily from Shillong and bargaining does help.

How much time to spend in Shillong?

It would be best to have a plan of a 3-4 day Shillong travel itinerary. Places to visit in Shillong are easily accessible by car. For a few places, you might have to hike a bit. So, depending on your taste, you can choose to drop a few places from the list. Shillong also has the typical ‘laid-back’ ambience which makes it a wonderful travel-friendly spot. Whatever you choose, spending some quality time in the lap of Nature will make it worth the visit.

What is the best time to visit Shillong?

There is no particular “best” time to visit Shillong because the place has a high altitude with lovely weather. Winters can be a bit on the harsh side (from an Indian perspective) and summers are cool. It is best to avoid the holiday season when you might find each spot crowded and hotels running full. October-November (before the winters) and February-May (after the winters) can be a good times to make a Shillong travel itinerary. Having said this, one can plan to visit Shillong and adjacent regions in monsoons when the waterfalls are at their roaring best and lakes in their mesmerizing natural shades.

How to reach Shillong?

The best way to reach Shillong is through Guwahati, which is in Assam. Guwahati is a major city in Assam with good railway and flight connectivity. You can reach Guwahati through either of these transportation options. You can explore a bit of Guwahati and/or other places of Assam before ascending to the hills of Shillong. 

There are several options for reaching Shillong from Guwahati. I have elaborated on each one of them below.

The government also provides a 30-minute helicopter ride to Shillong from Guwahati. The Guwahati to Shillong helicopter fare is about 1500 INR per person. The first ride starts as early as 9 am and goes up till 1.30 pm. 

I also spotted several shared taxis (including Tata Sumo), which charged between 300- 400 INR per seat. There are also government and private buses travelling from Guwahati to Shillong but I heard that they took a lot of time. The tickets can be booked at Meghalaya Tourism Information Centre, Guwahati Airport/ Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, Borjhar. I suggest starting from Guwahati (either as a fresh trip or as a continuation trip from Guwahati) early in a taxi. A small car would charge a price of 1800 INR while a Guwahati to Shillong Tata Sumo fare would be around 2000 INR. SUVs generally cost double. Depending on your nature of comfort level and the number of people you will be able to book a cab. There are several online portals for booking such cars.

I would suggest choosing a taxi option. It would be much more convenient if you wish to make stops in between like I did at the lake

Should I take the Guwahati-Shillong Tour Packages?

You will find several travel agents advertising customized trips to Shillong from Guwahati. Since these are part of packages, these will always be a bit expensive. So, if you are on a budget, best avoid these. You can easily explore Shillong and places nearby on your own.

Where to stay in Shillong?

Shillong is one of the top tourist spots that attract visitors all the year-round. It accommodates a number of hotels which range from budget to luxury. Common booking websites will show you a number of options.

I would suggest you book before reaching Shillong, especially between October to March, when the number of travellers increases manifold. It is also a good idea to stay in the city centre so that transportation is not a problem.

What are Transportation options in and around Shillong?

While in Shillong, you will need to have a car along with you if you want to enjoy the places in their true sense (that of course if you are not bound by a budget). Hiring cabs or small cars for the whole day is a good way to deal with it. There are a number of taxi rentals available. The best option is to just walk to the taxi stand and bargain for a few quotes.

How much will a 4-day trip to Shillong cost?

On average, a Shillong trip for 4 days (from Guwahati) will cost you around 8000-10000 INR. I have given a breakdown of my costs above. Also, as I said, you can cut down on the costs if you travel in a group.

Is Shillong safe for travellers?

Yes, Shillong is a safe place to travel for all kinds of travellers including solo female travellers. The main reason for this is that their society is matriarchal. However, I would advise you not to be late out at night. This is because the majority of places are deserted by 9 pm and you won’t find most places open.

Is Monsoons a good time to visit Shillong?

Monsoons are a wonderful time to visit Shillong. During monsoons, you can witness the waterfalls in their full force. The rainy season brings out the best in Shillong.

The distance between the two cities is around 100 kilometers and it takes around 4 hours to reach Shillong by train.

The best airport nearest Shillong is Guwahati Borjhaar Airport which is bigger and has better connectivity with other cities in India. which is 125 kilometers away from Shillong Town. 

If it is possible then directly fly to Umroi Airport, Borapani, Shillong or can take a flight to Guwahati and take a taxi from Paltan Bazaar, Guwahati to Shillong.

There are several ways to travel to Shillong from Guwahati or from any other location via road. But the best way to travel to Shillong is to arrive in Guwahati first as several options are available from there.

Options to travel to Shillong

• Shared Cabs/Car 
• Private rented car

If you want to travel to Shillong from Guwahati via bus then there are several options for this like Volvo buses, sleeper buses, deluxe buses, regular buses, and some government buses are also available.

Sleeper buses or AC buses will cost you over 400 rupees for one person and government buses will cost you 200 to 250 per person. 

If you want to travel by Volvo bus or AC bus, then this bus departs from Ulubari which is near Paltan Bazar regular bus/government buses are available from ASTC station which is situated in Paltan Bazaar near Guwahati Railway Station.

The buses will travel from Guwahati to Shillong from the national highway NH 40 which is about 135 km or more and it will take around 3 to 4 hours.

 but the journey is pretty comfortable because the condition of the road is very good.

 but I will recommend you to choose a shared cab or taxi to travel from Guwahati to Shillong as it will take you less time than the bus and taxis are more in quantity than buses which means you don’t have to wait for the next bus to arrive. 

Shared Cabe/Car/Sumo 

The most preferred way to travel to Shillong from Guwahati is to use the shared taxis/cabs/car. they run between Guwahati and Shillong on a regular basis.

A shared cab will cost you 500 rupees for one person and government sumos will cost you 200 to 250 per person. 

 This car departs from  Paltan Bazar near Guwahati Railway Station and government sumos are available from ASTC station which is situated in Paltan Bazaar near Guwahati Railway Station

The cars will drive via national highway NH 40 which is about 135 km or more and it will take them to the beautiful hill station of Shillong within 2 to 2.5 hours only. It takes very less time than any other option. One can also drive easily from Tripura and Mizoram via NH44 to reach Shillong.

But we want to remind you one thing you have to be careful while choosing a cab/car because the condition of the car/cab may not be good so please first check the condition of the cab/car then book it.

Private rented car 

There is another option for you while traveling from Guwahati to Shillong is by booking a private car/cab for you.

You can book these cars online or you can ask your hotel where you are staying to book a car for you. They can help you with this. Private cars will receive you from wherever you want.

The cars will take very less time, 2 to 2.5 hours. While you are traveling in your private car you can stop your car at any location. This will be a very luxurious experience for you. It will cost you 3000 to 4000 rupees depending on which kind of car you are choosing. 

If you are traveling with family or you are a couple then this option is very favorable for you.

You can  Rent a Bike or Scooty in Guwahati at a very affordable price which you can use to travel to Shillong, Dawki, or anywhere in Meghalaya. The rent of bikes/scooters in Guwahati starts from Rs.700 to 1500 per day. But the best way to rent a bike/scooter is to rent it from Shillong as you can travel the entire Meghalaya and you can save a few days of rent as you don’t need to travel back and forth to Guwahati.

There are a few things to note while traveling in Meghalaya on a two-wheeler is that you need better driving skills as you are going to travel on hilly roads and secondly the traffic rules totally differ specially in Shillong as each and every person follows the traffic rules.

Most importantly while traveling to Shillong on a motor vehicle is to use Google Maps with the car option.

You are traveling on a bike and you are using Google Maps . The maps will automatically suggest several shortcuts to save you time but these shortcuts are very very dangerous.

 So I always advise my fellow followers to use Google Maps with the option selected as a car so that Google Maps will only suggest you the roads that are capable for cars and it will not suggest you any shortcuts which may be very dangerous

 ‘Real-life scenario case study

 So this is my own Story and it’s very scary since I was traveling with my wife Baishali and we were on a motorcycle and we are using Google Maps to travel to the Golf field in Shillong and we were at the Shillong viewpoint which is also the  Shillong peak’

 So we both decided to travel to Gold Field from Shillong peak and while I was driving the bike I opened my Google map and chose the settings as a motorcycle in Google maps and set the location to Golf Field.

So soon after we reached the Shillong Police bazaar the map showed several ways to reach the Golf field in a very short amount of time and we started to follow the shortcuts that the map shot so after just 15 to 20 minutes we came up on a  dad and Road. So we rotated the map again and chose a new road to a regional location and this time the map shows the road which is actually a staircase.

 So now whether you have to travel walking or you have to leave your scooter behind since you can’t take your bike and write it on the stairs.

 This incident was followed by several incidents to cause nearly two hours to get out of that area and we got out of that area by asking the locals how to reach the main road.

 I discovered that if I choose the settings in Google Maps to 1 hour then the map only shows me the road which is big enough for everyone to travel and it is safe.

 So I highly suggest that if you are going to use Google Maps that your setting should be used as the car option so that you don’t end up on a road that leads to nowhere.

 Shillong is a  popular hill station located in the northeastern state of Meghalaya it is a beautiful landscape with natural beauty and since it is situated in the hills it doesn’t have the luxury of Railways

 The nearest railway station to C long is the Guwahati Railway Station which is around a hundred kilometers away from the city.

 So if you are traveling to Shillong from anywhere in India via train then you have to reach Guwahati and from there you can take any kind of accommodation to reach Shillong.

From Guwahati, you can travel to Shillong by air or by road.

Once you reach the Guwahati Railway station you can take a taxi or cab to reach Shillong the journey from the railway station to Shillong is is is scenic as you pass through the beautiful hills and forest

Badia di Morrona

The 600-acre Badia di Morrona estate, located amidst sloping hills between Terricciola and Casciana Terme, is one of the oldest wineries in Tuscany. It offers tours, tastings of its wines and EVO olive oil (with light lunch), and visits to its historic Benedictine abbey, the summer residence of the Bishops of Volterra in the late 15th century.

Each of six fully-equipped restored farmhouses, divided into villas and apartments, has swimming pools and is surrounded by greenery.

Castelvecchio Socita’Agricola

Located in the town of Terricciola in the Pisan hills, the family-run Castelvecchio Societa’Agricola has 10 hectares of vineyards managed by women. Visitors can arrange stays in either a restored barn or a portion of the original farmhouse restored by the family that offers views of the hills.

Fattoria Varramista

The heart of the 400-acre Fattoria di Varramista in Montopoli is an ancient villa (purchased by the Piaggio-Agnelli family in 1953) once the residence of Enrico Piaggio, famous for the Vespa brand. Varramista offers tours of the villa, the Italian garden, the cellars and vineyards, and tastings of the estate’s wine and EVO olive oil accompanied by Tuscan products.

Three farmhouses on the estate have private pools surrounded by olive groves; another is in the park near the manor. Guests at these residences can also hire mountain bikes, participate in cooking classes, and hire private chefs and/or drivers.

Villa Cosmiana

Sited on a gentle hill in Peccioli, this 17th-century, neoclassical Villa Cosmiana became part of the Antinori family estate in 1783. Abandoned in 1933, its new owners recently meticulously restored it to preserve its rich historical and artistic legacy. An English park with Italianate gardens surrounds the villa, along with 15 vineyards on 11 hectares. Wine tastings begin with a tour of the villa and its winemaking facilities before a light lunch.

The estate has three suites in the villa and four in the Fattoria (farm) that can be booked with a tasting dinner or discovery day.

Villa Saletta

Although wine production on this 1,760-acre working estate can be traced back to 980 AD, Villa Saletta is a modern, boutique winery. Located in a medieval village with ancient farmhouses in Palaia, the family owners lovingly restored a property that had fallen into ruin. Visitors can enjoy wine tastings, visits to the winery and cantina, or a guided tour of the magnificent borgo.

Three villas have been renovated using traditional techniques, materials from the region, and modern luxury. The largest can accommodate up to 14 guests.

Pieve de’ Pitti

Located in the hills of Terricola, Pieve de’ Pitti is named after the Florentine Pitti family, which owned the estate until the end of the 17th century. The winery offers tours of the cellar and vineyards, wine tasting, and creative cooking courses.

Guests can stay in one of the five rooms of the Villa (a single large farmhouse surrounded by vineyards) or in one of three self-catering apartments in the Il Poggetto country house. The property also hosts weddings and special occasion parties.

Tenuta di Ghizzano

Tenuta di Ghizzano is an organic and biodynamic farm of 280 hectares, 18 of which are vineyards. The winery is located in the town of Ghizzano, a small frazione of Peccioli with a population of just over 300 people. The estate has vineyards, olive trees, cereal crops, woods, and poplar groves and hosts a range of “experiences,” from tastings to tours to personalized visits.

The two-story Villa Ginevra, a contemporary farmhouse immersed in the countryside, is a beautifully appointed four-bedroom residence filled with art and antiques. It offers a balcony overlooking the scenic hills.

Le Palaie Farm is located on a 150-hectare estate in Peccioli surrounding a 17th-century manor house. In addition to olive groves, arable land has been set aside to preserve the fauna and insects that help repopulate the environment. The winery also hosts special events, including weddings, tastings, and cellar visits.

The recently renovated manor house has seven apartments of different sizes and accommodations in another four independent houses.

Fattoria di Fibbiano

Fattoria Fibbiano is located in Terricola between the hills of Pisa and Volterra. The Cantoni family purchased the farm in 1997. The house's foundation was built in 1707 and is surrounded by vineyards, some over 100 years old. The property is home to three generations of this family. In addition to tastings, tours of the vineyards, picnics, Vespa adventures, and cooking lessons, guests learn about the architectural features of the historic farm. During the harvest, guests can experience olive and grape picking.

Apartments are located in the same building where the family lives. A communal vaulted living room and beautiful pool with panoramic views bring people together for conversation.

Podere la Chiesa

Podere La Chiesa is an ultra-contemporary winery that might be mistaken for an art museum. Located in Terricciola, the winery is an architectural masterpiece surrounded by the Tuscan countryside. The one million-year-old soil is rich in limestone, sand, and clay. The winery offers guided tours and tastings. In September, guests can participate in the 50-year-old Grape and Wine Festival held in Terricciola.

The winery is close to the little town of Casanova, which has a small BnB and Michelin-starred restaurant.
