ChatGPT can live on a Mac

OpenAI launched ChatGPT in November, built on the company's GPT-3 machine learning models. Companies such as Microsoft have integrated it while others — including Google — fear it .

It has various applications to answer questions and generate text, and a new app has appeared that brings it to the Mac menu bar.

Created by Jordi Bruin, MacGPT is a macOS app available for free, though people can add their own price to help support the developer.

Once a user logs in with their OpenAI credentials, they can click the menu bar icon to start a conversation. It's also possible to assign it a keyboard shortcut to activate MacGPT without needing a mouse or trackpad.

How to use ChatGPT on Mac with MacGPT

MacGPT is available to run on macOS versions of Monterey and Ventura.

  • Visit Bruin's webpage on Gumroad .
  • Enter 0 in the price box to download it for free — but we recommend throwing Bruin a few bucks.
  • Click " I want this! " and the 3.1MB download will start immediately.
  • Double-click on the zip file in your Downloads folder, then drag the app to the Applications folder .

A Web tab inside the app allows you to log in with OpenAI credentials. Visit the OpenAI website to sign up for a free account. Under the Native tab, accessing ChatGPT via API credentials found in your OpenAI account user settings is possible.

How to use ChatGPT on Mac - Examples of questions and prompts

The MacGPT app notes that this provides faster responses and a more fluid experience. After logging in, the app shows prompts straight from OpenAI.

These prompts remind users that it's currently a research preview and that some of the information generated might be incorrect, misleading, offensive, or biased.

ChatGPT offers various example prompts with which to get started. For example, type "Explain quantum computing in simple terms" or "Got any creative ideas for a 10-year-old's birthday?"

Once a question or statement is answered, ChatGPT will generate a response. Depending on the query, some results can be longer than others. If it's taking a while, there is a button to stop it from running.

It wasn't that simple

At the bottom of the answer are buttons to like or dislike a response. OpenAI added that option as a way for people to give feedback on ChatGPT's reponses in case it "hallucinates," which means it can provide an answer that is false or not supported by its training data.

Additionally, MacGPT and the ChatGPT website save conversations in a history so users can revisit them. It's also possible to access ChatGPT via OpenAI's website , and it's functionally identical to MacGPT without unique features.

To much scams…please READ!

So whenever I use this app/ Safari it get these trackers and scammers to get my location and this is making me nervous. I installed ad blocker I think it’s called and I blocked some trackers which made me feel better. Every time you search something you usually get a scam or tracker. I do not like when people track me down. I rarely use this app because of the scams and risks. I think it is an OK app in general because it’s the people making these small BAD websites. The reason I gave it 4 stars is because it could use work but it is pretty much like google. I use google way more because I feel like it is much safer than safari. I could be wrong… Safari could use some work with all these BAD websites. Can you block these bad websites? I would love to block these websites cause they are scary. Also watch out for nine anime/ 9anime websites… I searched up 9anime on safari and clicked a link. It looked safe but then these inappropriate pop ups kept coming. I immediately got off. I checked my ‘ How much trackers we have prevented’ or whatever it’s called it said that it had prevented 14 trackers from getting my IP address. This was good and bad news. I’m glad that safari and google can prevent these trackers but it is bad because this is dangerous. BE CAREFUL ON SAFARI!!!

Your Underrated Prince, Safari

In my humble opinion, Safari is the underrated king among multiple web browsers on the market. I was a PC devotee from ‘95 to ‘16, since then, it’s been all Tim Cook 🍎 all the time. My only regret is not purchasing a smartphone back in ‘07 from Steve Jobs. Presently, I own an iPhone 6s Plus in rose gold (2016), iPad Mini (2016), iPad Pro (2019) & MacBook (2018) in rose gold with matching Beats By Dre headphones. All four are set up with Safari, not Chrome, TOR, Brave, Edge, or DDGo. I love the ability to quickly save favorites, add to reading list & share content to other platforms. My favorites are alphabetized for quick reference & the reading list keeps all articles & pages in chronological order for quick recall. Also, I learned Safari quickly because it’s extremely user friendly. The browser helped my navigation of Apple when switching from PC. I’ll admit, learning MacBook isn’t easy, but, Safari keeps things familiar for me on the desktop. When lost, just go back to Safari & start over. It’s surprising no one in tech media mentions Safari more often as a go to source for navigating the internet. Chrome is the reigning king of, Land Of Browsers, without an heir apparent. I nominate Safari as the prince with future king potential. Citizens of Land Of Browsers don’t like their chrome-plated dirty laundry aired, sold or tracked.
I have been using this for years and had no problems with it. I ran over my phone with my lawn mower and was without my phone for over a year due to having to fight with the insurance company. However when I finally got a lawyer involved the insurance company finally replaced it for me. I DID not lose anything and I mean anything. I like the cards better because they are easier to clear out. You have to back everything up to your cloud every day or every other day so that you don’t have to worry about losing anything. As I always make sure that I back everything up just in case. It is not apples fault if you lose your any of your information it is yours for not backing up your phone to your cloud. So most of the people who write bad reviews either don’t back up or they just don’t or they just don’t care. Apple doesn’t charge a lot to add more space to your cloud so there is no reason why you can’t back you things. This is better than anything that google has. By far. If you want your information used by third parties then use google’s and quit complaining. You can change your browser in safari so that you don’t have to use them get with it you bad reviews and learn how to use safari.

MacGPT: how to use ChatGPT on your Mac

Apple might not officially be in the AI space, but a developer has created a legitimate way to bring ChatGPT to macOS and make the chatbot accessible from your menu bar.

How to download MacGPT

How to sign in or register for macgpt, what to expect when using macgpt for the first time, macgpt special features.

The aptly named MacGPT is an application developed by Jordi Bruin that allows you to install ChatGPT as a remote browser on your Mac desktop. The application has been available since the 2022 holiday season and has garnered over 370 ratings, many of which are five stars. MacGPT is currently free, however, Bruin accepts donations. Once out of beta, he will make MacGPT available at the App Store, where it will sell for $5.

Here’s what you need to know if you’re interested in trying out MacGPT.

You can access the MacGPT download on Bruin’s Gumroad page . If you’d like to leave a donation, you can input your fair price. Select I want this and it will take you to the download page. Enter your email address and then select G et to begin the download. You will receive a receipt in your email detailing that you purchased the product, regardless of if you donated or not. The app is compatible with macOS Monterey and macOS Ventura.

  • OpenAI strikes major deal with News Corp to boost ChatGPT
  • How to choose between a MacBook and a Windows laptop

Keep in mind that MacGPT is just ChatGPT in a Mac ecosystem. When opening the app, it closely resembles Apple’s Safari browser, but everything looks and feels very much like ChatGPT. The browser will open a ChatGPT welcome window giving you the option to either log in or sign up for ChatGPT.

If you already have an OpenAI account, or you subscribe to ChatGPT Plus , you can use your credentials to quickly access ChatGPT. If you use a Google or Microsoft account as your login, you can also use that to finish setup. Note that if you have two-factor authentication enabled on one of these sign-in methods, you’ll need to authenticate with a security token or app. If you don’t have an account, you can quickly register through the app on-screen.

Once logged in, you will have an experience similar to logging into ChatGPT on a standard browser. There are notifications detailing that ChatGPT is a free research preview and that some of the information generated might be incorrect, misleading, offensive, or biased.

There is a notification about how ChatGPT collects data and one encouraging feedback. When you get to the chatbot, it is identical to the online generator, which showcases examples, capabilities, and limitations. If you already have an account, you should be able to see your history of prior queries in the upper-left. Inputting a new prompt will generate your desired response and update your history, which you’ll then be able to see if you log into the original ChatGPT on a separate browser.

MacGPT does have some features that are unique to the application. You can set a keyboard shortcut for the app so that it opens without the use of a mouse. You can access this feature through the MacGPT preferences, which are located in the upper-right corner of the screen.

You can also select the A lways on top option to have the MacGPT icon show up on the Mac screen header as a drop-down application.

Overall, though, MacGPT is basically a shortcut for the browser-based version of ChatGPT. It has the advantage of showing an icon on your desktop, but there were a few oddities I noticed when using the app:

  • You can purchase ChatGPT Plus through MacGPT since everything is identical to the web-based chatbot. At first, I got an error message when attempting to access the link. This could indicate that MacGPT suffers from the same throttling issues as the free ChatGPT. However, attempting again a few minutes later took me to the checkout page.
  • If you already have ChatGPT Plus, you can input your confirmation code into the Plus section located in the top-right corner of the browser.
  • MacGPT features a Dark mode similar to the web-based ChatGPT.
  • The only thing that appears nonfunctional on the MacGPT interface is the Updates & FAQ link.
  • When opening MacGPT, you might occasionally get a CAPTCHA notification asking you to confirm that you’re human.

Other than that, MacGPT is a simple way to access ChatGPT without going through your browser and not much more. Thankfully, there are some other interesting ways OpenAI’s tech is being implemented on other platforms. For example, Snapchat recently announced its My AI tool inside the app, and Slack integrated a ChatGPT bot into its application as well.

We all saw it coming, and the day is finally here -- ChatGPT is slowly morphing into your friendly neighborhood AI, complete with the ability to creepily laugh alongside you if you say something funny, or go "aww" if you're being nice -- and that's just scratching at the surface of today's announcements. OpenAI just held a special Spring Update Event, during which it unveiled its latest large language model (LLM) -- GPT-4o. With this update, ChatGPT gets a desktop app, will be better and faster, but most of all, it becomes fully multimodal.

The event started with an introduction by Mira Murati, OpenAI's CTO, who revealed that today's updates aren't going to be just for the paid users -- GPT-4o is launching across the platform for both free users and paid subscribers. "The special thing about GPT-4o is that it brings GPT-4 level intelligence to everyone, including our free users," Murati said.

We have a warning if your MacBook or other Mac machine is still running macOS Ventura. The latest macOS Ventura 13.6.6 update is bringing a lot of big bugs, and it is affecting the way that people are using their favorite Apple products, so you might want to hold off on downloading the update.

Originally released back on March 25, this problematic update came at the same time as macOS Sonoma 14.4.1, which patched issues with Java, USB hubs, and more. Unfortunately, though, macOS Ventura 13.6.6 is introducing some new issues of its own. Spotted by the folks at GottaBeMobile, Mac users have taken to Apple's support forums to complain of everyday issues linked to this release that are breaking their Macs.

For most new Mac users -- especially if they're coming from Windows -- one of the first questions they need to ask is how to take a screenshot on a Mac? There's no dedicated Print Screen key like there is on Windows, but there is keyboard shortcut, and if you want something more akin to Microsoft's Windows Snipping tool, there are some great screenshot apps you can use, too.

Here's how to take a screenshot on a Mac in a few different ways. How to take a screenshot using keyboard shortcuts MacOS keyboard shortcuts are the quickest ways to take screenshots, whether you're capturing the entire screen or just a portion. By default, Apple's methods save your screenshot to the desktop, but if you want to copy the screenshot to the clipboard, there's a keyboard shortcut you can use instead. Apple is bringing AI Chat to more places in your MacBook

MacGPT is becoming more accessible

A man in a suit using a laptop with a projected display showing a mockup of the ChatGPT interface.

Apple ’s MacGPT app, a native app for macOS that brings quick access to ChatGPT from the menu bar, has been updated to version 3.0. The new update adds on plenty of new features, as well as making it more accessible for users.

For instance, a new feature called Global lets you access MacGPT’s assistance from anywhere by using a text field that appears in the middle of the screen. Another feature is Inline, which brings ChatGPT AI into the text field by typing in a trigger phrase and prompt.

And because MacGPT loads the chat interface directly into the web browser, you’re able to log into OpenAI and then begin a conversation with the app by clicking the menu icon or you can assign a keyboard shortcut instead.

And not only will MacGPT feature its own updates, but ChatGPT-4 integration also brings with it plenty of other improvements like using images to search, being a virtual assistant for the visually impaired , and boosting your conversational skills in Duolingo .

ChatGPT has plenty of potential for good

Despite many of the moral issues that ChatGPT brings with it, there are so many accessibility uses that can make life easier for people, as well as for general quality-of-life uses. As mentioned before, the visually impaired or blind can use an app called Be My Eyes , which lets GPT-4 pick out images and sounds to pull relevant information from.

It also possesses response capabilities across 26 languages, including Korean and Italian. And if asked, it can summarize novels and films by using a database trained on millions of books, webpages, and plenty of text data. Because its memory bank can now hold 64,000 words, it can also remember about 128 pages of conversational text  – handy if you need it to recall information from a previous conversation.

Then there’s the fun side to ChatGPT, which comes from making it do quirky and harmless stunts. For instance, you can use it to code a videogame but the AI is wonky and often truncates the coding thanks to the character count limit. It can also write a movie script very poorly , or you can make it talk to itself and watch as it descends into madness thanks to the closed loop of conversation swapping information that wasn’t very accurate to begin with.

There are so many uses for ChatGPT, especially the updated GPT-4 version that brings so many improvements to the AI chat application. How to Access ChatGPT From Your Mac's Menu Bar

OpenAI's ChatGPT chatbot offers a new generation of conversational AI functionality that promises to fundamentally change the technological landscape and the way people work. Here's how to access it directly from your Mac's menu bar.

ChatGPT on App Store Feature

ChatGPT is trained on a large corpus of text corralled from the internet, which allows it to answer a wide variety of questions and generate coherent responses to many different types of prompts.

That's why Microsoft has added its Bing GPT chatbot to the Taskbar with the latest Windows 11 update, and why Google plans to integrate its Bard experimental conversational AI service to Google Search.

Sadly, Apple doesn't have a chatbot service similar to ChatGPT, and there's no indication that the company will launch one soon, so macOS integration is likely some ways off. However, thanks to one developer, it is possible to interact with ChatGPT right from your Mac's menu bar.

In the app's settings, there's an option to make the MacGPT window always on top, so it floats over other windows. You can also record a keyboard shortcut that launches the chat window.

How to use bing chat on safari.

Bing Chat is finally available on browsers other than Edge.

It's fair to say that AI has blown up. From the moment that the power of ChatGPT first reached the masses, you haven't been able to go anywhere or read anything without AI being mentioned at some point.

Whether AI ends up destroying humanity or just making us its slave remains to be seen, but what's certain is that the natural language processing tools that make use of AI technology are an enormous leap forward.

One of the easiest ways to take advantage of AI tech is through a chatbot such as Bing Chat . Until now, if you wanted to use Bing Chat in a browser, that browser needed to be Microsoft Edge . There is good news if you prefer Chrome or Safari, however: Bing Chat is being launched on those browsers too. If you're a Mac user, here's how to use Bing Chat on Safari.

What is Bing Chat?

Bing Chat is an AI chatbot created by Microsoft that is an additional feature of the Bing search engine. It allows you to ask questions and receive responses in natural language rather than typing your query into the search engine. It's based on the popular ChatGPT tech (via OpenAI) but allows you to make use of the powerful text-generation AI system within the Bing search engine.

What can Bing Chat do?

Instead of typing a query into Bing's search engine and then choosing from a list of search results, Bing Chat allows you to hold a conversation with the AI chatbot to access the information that you need. You're not just limited to asking for information, however. You can ask Bing Chat to do pretty much anything, such as suggesting recipes, producing AI-generated images , summarising blog posts, or writing you a resignation letter. The only real limit is that you're restricted to five replies on the same topic to avoid Bing Chat getting confused and wandering into questionable territory. You're also limited to 50 questions in total per day.

Which browsers offer Bing Chat?

Initially, Bing Chat was only available in Microsoft's Edge browser, apparently in an effort to get more people to use it. However, a report from Windows Latest first indicated that the chatbot was being introduced to Bing's search engine on Google Chrome and Apple's Safari. The feature is currently being rolled out, however, so won't be available to every Chrome or Safari user. At the time of writing, we were able to use Bing Chat on Chrome but were not yet able to access it on Safari.

Is Bing Chat on Safari the same as on Edge?

Bing Chat on Chrome and Safari is almost exactly the same as on Edge, but there is one key difference. In Edge, your query can be up to 4,000 characters long. On Chrome and Safari, this is limited to 2,000 characters.

The other big difference is that if you're already using Bing Chat on Edge, you won't be hit with the requests to install Edge that pop up when you're using Bing Chat on Chrome or Safari.

If you have access to Bing Chat on Safari, then accessing and using the chatbot is a piece of cake.

  • Open Safari and navigate to Bing.com .
  • At the top of the window, click Chat .
  • Type your query into the dialogue box and press Enter to submit it. You're limited to 2,000 characters.
  • When you receive your response, you can reply to it again to clarify your query or gain further information.
  • When you reach five responses on the same query, you'll need to click the Broom icon to start a new topic.

ChatGPT is an incredibly powerful tool , but there are a few barriers to using it, such as needing to register an account and accept a list of disclaimers. Bing Chat gives you access to the power of ChatGPT in a much more user-friendly format. If you're an Apple Mac user who uses Safari by default, being able to access Bing Chat directly from your browser is very welcome news.

9 Ways To Get ChatGPT On A Mac

ChatGPT has set the internet on fire with its incredible Artificial Intelligence and here we show you some different ways to use ChatGPT on a Mac.

ChatGPT is a deep learning AI chatbot that can generate text on just about anything incredibly accurately.

The possibilities are endless with ChatGPT and there’s no doubt that it is a next level technology that goes beyond anything that Siri, Alexa or other “virtual assistants” are capable of.

In May 2024, OpenAI finally announced the release of ChatGPT for Mac although at the moment, it’s only available to Plus subscribers for $20 per month.

There are however lots of free third party apps that allow you to integrate it more closely with macOS including on Apple Silicon Macs.

Quick Navigation

Is ChatGPT Free To Use?

Does chatgpt work on mac, 1. chatgpt for mac, 3. create a chatgpt dock shortcut in safari, 4. chatgpt for desktop, 5. chatgpt web, 7. configure a shortcut, 8. integrate chatgpt with python.

At the moment, ChatGPT is free to use on all platforms but the developer OpenAI has now introduced a ChatGPT Plus for $20 per month.

ChatGPT Plus offers faster response times, better access during peak times and first access to new features.

ChatGPT works on any platform including Macs as it’s entirely web based but there are also ways to integrate it into macOS.

The easiest way is to use the official ChatGPT for Mac app from OpenAI.

Windows users can save ChatGPT as a Windows app using the Edge browser but this isn’t possible on a Mac unless you have already installed Windows on your Mac .

Microsoft has also recently released Bing, Edge and Skype AI apps for iPhone and iPad which is based on BingAI but nothing for Mac.

Here then are the best ways to use ChatGPT on a Mac.

chatgpt app for mac

In May 2024, OpenAI released the official ChatGPT for Mac app.

By using a simple keyboard shortcut, “Option + Space”, you can instantly ask ChatGPT a question and with the new Voice Mode, you can have a conversation with ChatGPT directly on your Mac.

You can ask ChatGPT what’s on your screen and discuss elements of it based on feedback from the AI assistant.

Other things possible are asking ChatGPT to create charts based on data in spreadsheets, chat about photos and analyze files you upload.

At the moment, ChatGPT for Mac is only available to Plus subscribers but it is due to be rolled-out for free to all users on the ChatGPT download page over the course of summer 2024.

You can access ChatGPT from your Mac’s Menu Bar thanks to a free third party app called macGPT .

macGPT allows you to start new conversations on your Mac desktop and also resume ones that you have already started. You can also access macGPT from the Main Menu via the brain icon even when apps are in full screen mode.

To use ChatGPT with macGPT follow these instructions.

  • Sign-up for an OpenAI ChatGPT account . You’ll need to enter your name, email address and telephone number to verify your account.
  • Download menuGPT and drag it to your Applications folder.
  • Double click on it and login with your OpenAI credentials.

You can then use ChatGPT via macGPT from your Mac’s Menu bar. You can also change the settings so that macGPT is always on top floating over other windows.

menugpt chat settings

You can download macGPT for free although the developer encourages a small donation.

If you find that macGPT is not working when you enter a request, then it’s probably because ChatGPT is at capacity.

Note that this is not a problem with macGPT but is due to high demand on ChatGPT.

safari web apps chatgpt

If you’ve already updated your Mac to macOS Sonoma , then you can easily create a desktop Dock shortcut to access ChatGPT on your Mac anytime.

This has been possible on iOS devices like iPhones and iPads for some time but is also now possible in the latest version of Safari in macOS Sonoma.

In fact, you can do this for any website you use in Safari.

To create a ChatGPT app shortcut in the Dock using Safari in macOS Sonoma, follow these instructions.

  • Visit ChatGPT in Safari. You don’t have to log into your account or anything to create the Dock app for it.
  • Go to File in the top right of Safari.
  • Click on the Add To Dock option.
  • Click on Add .

You’ve then instantly created a ChatGPT app for Mac that sits in your Dock like any other application.

The latest version of Safari also has a “web app” view mode which is like a simplified version of the browser which may be better for using ChatGPT when you click on the app in the Dock.

chatgpt for mac desktop

ChatGPT For Desktop is similar to macGPT and allows you to access ChatGPT from your Mac’s Menu Bar.

Once installed, you can either click on the ChatGPT For Desktop logo in the Menu Bar or use CMD + Shift + G to quickly open it from anywhere.

Note that there are two different downloads for ChatGPT For Desktop: one for Intel Macs and one for Apple Silicon ARM M1, M2 and M3 Macs.

You can download ChatGPT For Desktop here and watch how to install it below.

chatgpt for mac - browser

Outside of the official ChatGPT for Mac app, the quickest and easiest way to use ChatGPT on a Mac is simply to use the ChatGPT website in any browser such as Safari, Firefox or Chrome.

Once you’ve signed-up, you can ask ChatGPT anything and wait for a response.

If you sign-up with a Google or Microsoft account you only need to provide your email address to verify your account.

If you just sign-up with an email address, you’ll also need to provide your mobile number to verify your account.

You can then bookmark ChatGPT in your browser for easy access anytime you need it.

You can sign-up for ChatGPT here .

HelloAI app

HelloAI is an AI Chatbot Assistant that allows you to use ChatGPT on your Mac desktop.

HelloAI requires you to have a ChatGPT account and helps you get answers to quick questions instantly via ChatGPT on your Mac desktop.

HelloAI sits in the top right corner of your screen and also includes a useful Prompt Library that saves your favorite and frequently used prompts.

There’s also a Prompt Store which provides hundreds of prompts for various topics ranging from business and education to travel and entertainment.

This could be useful for Marketing Professionals looking for brainstorming inspiration, Business Executives needing to communicate clearly with a team and generate meeting agendas and students that need to simplify research.

However, HelloAI also requires a $2.99 weekly or $9.99 monthly plan on top of your ChatGPT subscription if you have one.

You download HelloAI from the Mac App store.

You can also integrate ChatGPT in other apps such as Gmail, Microsoft Office and more by creating a Shortcut although this is the most complicated way of setting-up ChatGPT on a Mac.

Creating a shortcut on your Mac basically allows you to access ChatGPT from any application although it won’t work in all cases.

To setup a shortcut to use ChatGPT you need to:

  • Sign-up for an OpenAI account .
  • Get an OpenAI API key which allows ChatGPT to communicate with Siri.
  • Click on “Create Secret New Key” and keep the API key safe somewhere.

You then need to create a Shortcut on your Mac instructions for which you can find below.

If you’re a programmer using Python, you can also integrate ChatGPT with Python on a Mac.

Python can access ChatGPT via the OpenAI API client similar to the other methods of integrating ChatGPT that we’ve already looked at.

Of course, it’s only useful for programmers although you may find that other coding platforms can also access the OpenAI API client on a Mac too.

To use ChatGPT With Python, follow the instructions below.

chattab mac

If you want a convenient way to use ChatGPT on your Mac then try ChatTab.

ChatTab downloads onto your Mac desktop and works in a tab layout format a bit like using a browser. You’ll of course need an OpenAI account and OpenAI key to link ChatTab to ChatGPT.

You can display a floating windows above any app and it’s ideal for Markdown with headings, codes, ordered lists etc.

ChatTab also does not store any of your private information, chats or log your activity either.

You can even use ChatTab for free but you will be limited to one single tab.

You can download ChatTab for Mac free and try it for yourself.

How to use ChatGPT as a Siri shortcut on your iPhone or iPad

lance-31.png

Want to access ChatGPT on your iPhone or iPad? You can always browse to OpenAI's ChatGPT website in Safari every time you want to use it . But a more convenient option is to set up a Siri shortcut that works with the AI. And instead of trying to create your own such shortcut, a few custom predesigned ones are available for you to download and install.

Also:   How to use ChatGPT to create an app

In my testing, I checked out three different ChatGPT Siri shortcuts -- SiriGPT, ChatGPT Siri, and Siri Pro. All of them worked similarly to bring the power of ChatGPT to an iPhone and iPad.

After the shortcut is set up, you're able to trigger it a few different ways. You can open the Shortcuts app and tap the icon for the shortcut. You can add the shortcut to your Home screen where it's more easily available. Plus, you can run the shortcut by telling Siri to activate it.

1. Get API keys

Your first step is to get the necessary API keys from Open AI. These keys are used by a ChatGPT shortcut to send your requests to the ChatGPT service and receive the responses. The process for obtaining the keys is the same no matter which ChatGPT shortcut you use.

Also: Do you like asking ChatGPT questions? You could get paid (a lot) for it

On your iPhone or iPad, open Safari and head to the Open AI platform page . If you don't already have an account with OpenAI, tap the button for Sign up. Otherwise, tap the button for Log in and sign in with your account. Tap the three line hamburger icon in the upper right, scroll to the bottom of the Settings menu, and select your profile. From the profile menu, tap View API keys .

Select the option for View API keys.

2. Create new secret key

At the API keys screen, tap the button for Create new secret key . Press down on the key to select the entire string and then tap Copy. Open a note and paste the key. If you plan to try more than one ChatGPT shortcut, return to the Open AI platform page, tap OK, and then tap Create new secret key to generate another key. Repeat the copy and paste.

Copy and paste the API key.

Now, let's check out each of the three ChatGPT shortcuts.

How to use SiriGPT

1. get the shortcut.

Open the SiriGPT shortcut page on your device and tap the button for Get Shortcut . At the shortcuts screen, tap the button for Add Shortcut . The shortcut appears in the Shortcuts app.

Add the SiriGPT shortcut.

2. Add the API key

Return to the note in which you pasted one or more of the API keys. Select and copy one set of keys. Back in the Shortcuts app, tap the three-dot icon for the SiriGPT shortcut. In the text field, remove the phrase ADD API KEY HERE and then paste the API key you just copied. Tap Done.

Paste the API key.

3. Run SiriGPT

Tap the SiriGPT shortcut to run it. The first time you do this, you'll be asked to allow it access to Speech Recognition. Tap Allow.

Run the shortcut and allow the necessary permissions.

4. Ask a question

Type or speak your request. Tap Allow when asked to connect to api.openai.com. SiriGPT then displays and speaks the response. Tap Done at any point. Tap Done to stop the chat. Tap Ask Again to ask another question.

Read and listen to the response.

How to use ChatGPT Siri

Open the ChatGPT Siri shortcut page in Safari and tap the button for Get Shortcut . At the shortcuts screen, tap the button for Add Shortcut . The shortcut then pops up in the Shortcuts app.

Add the shortcut.

Tap the three-dot icon for the shortcut. In the text field, delete the phrase "Replace this with your own API key!" and paste one of the API keys you copied from Open AI. Tap Done.

3. Ask a question

Tap the ChatGPT shortcut. Type your request in the text field or speak it by tapping the keyboard's microphone icon. Allow ChatGPT to connect to api.openai.com. The response then appears on the screen.

View the response.

How to use Siri Pro

Open the Siri Pro shortcut page in the browser and tap the button for Get Shortcut . At the shortcuts screen, tap the button for Add Shortcut . The shortcut pops up in the Shortcuts app.

Tap the shortcut's three-dot icon. In the text field, delete the phrase "GENERATE & ADD YOUR API KEY HERE" and paste an API key that you copied from Open AI. Tap Done.

Tap the Siri Pro shortcut. Type your request in the text field or speak it by tapping keyboard's microphone icon. Allow Siri Pro to connect to api.openai.com. By default, the shortcut only speaks the response and doesn't display it. But if you're skilled enough with Siri shortcuts, you may be able to tweak this one to display a response on the screen as well.

Listen to the response.

How to trigger a shortcut from the Home screen

Instead of launching a shortcut through the Shortcuts app, you can more easily trigger it from the Home screen.

1. Add to Home screen

To set this up, press down on the icon for one of the ChatGPT shortcuts and select Share. From the Share menu, tap the option for Add to Home Screen . Preview the name and icon for the shortcut and then tap Add.

Add the shortcut to the Home screen.

2. Ask a question

Tap the icon on the Home screen and then speak or type your request to receive a response.

Run the shortcut from the Home screen.

How to trigger a shortcut through Siri

An even quicker way is to run a shortcut through Siri. Simply say: "Hey Siri [name of shortcut]." If Siri doesn't understand that you want it to run a shortcut due to confusion with the name, then your best bet it to rename the shortcut.

To do this, press down on it in the Shortcuts app and select Rename from the menu. Choose a name that won't conflict with an existing command. Try calling on Siri again. Speak or type your request and wait for the response.

Tell Siri to run the shortcut.

Bing Chat is coming to Google Chrome and Safari

Microsoft is rolling out a dark mode for bing chat, too..

A Bing logo.

Watch out Bard — Bing’s AI chatbot is rolling out on Google Chrome and Safari. As first spotted by Windows Latest ( via 9to5Google ), Microsoft is testing letting users on both browsers access the tool.

“We are flighting access to Bing Chat in Safari and Chrome to select users as part of our testing on other browsers,” Caitlin Roulston, Microsoft’s director of communications, says in a statement to The Verge. “We are excited to expand access to even more users once our standard testing procedures are complete.”

You’ll still get prompted to download Edge.

Right now, I’m seeing Bing Chat in Chrome but not Safari, and some of my colleagues are seeing the opposite. It seems there are some limitations to using Bing Chat on Chrome and Safari, though. For one, you can only type 2,000-word prompts, as opposed to the 4,000-word limit that you get when using Bing Chat on Edge. Your conversation with the chatbot will also reset after five turns instead of 30 , and you’ll see some annoying pop-ups that prompt you to download Edge.

In addition to a wider rollout across different browsers, Microsoft has introduced dark mode for Bing Chat, too. You can swap over to dark mode by selecting the hamburger menu in the top-right corner of Bing Chat and then hitting Appearance > Dark or System Default . It doesn’t seem like this has been fully rolled out, though. While some of my colleagues are seeing this option, it’s still not available for me.

  • Microsoft’s new Bing Chat Enterprise offers better privacy for businesses

Until now, Microsoft only made its chatbot available on Edge, which was pretty inconvenient if you wanted to access the tool on other browsers. And while you can use Google’s Bard chatbot on browsers other than Chrome, you’ll see prompts to compare your answers to Bing when using Bard on Edge.

Update July 24th, 10:38AM ET: Added details about the rollout of dark mode.

Update July 24th, 3:43PM ET: Added a quote from a Microsoft spokesperson.

Make ChatGPT Work for You With These Browser Extensions

3D illustration of colorful shapes a mouse cursor and a browser window

It's hard to escape ChatGPT right now, with the conversational artificial intelligence bot taking on everything from web search to essay writing . More than 100 million people have tried out ChatGPT since it launched.

Whether you're using ChatGPT for free or paying for ChatGPT Plus ($20 a month), the impressiveness of its text-generating capabilities aren't really matched by its interface, which sticks largely to the basics.

That's where third-party browser extensions come in: They can help you get easier access to ChatGPT from other websites, add missing features such as a chat exporter, and suggest better prompts for getting better answers out of the AI bot.

These extensions are all compatible with the latest versions of Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge, except where stated.

Merlin sits in your browser and puts ChatGPT right at your fingertips, ready to spring into action at a moment's notice: Whether you need to compose a reply to a social media post or summarize a long block of text, Merlin can help you out.

The Ctrl+M (Windows) or Cmd+M (macOS) keyboard shortcut is how Merlin is activated once you've selected a block of text. You then need to tell Merlin what you want it to get ChatGPT to do: summarize, reply, write, or whatever it is.

For example, you can highlight all the text in an email and get Merlin/ChatGPT to compose a response. Having the chatbot right inside your browser makes it really convenient to use, though you are limited to 31 requests per day.

You don't have to wait for Google's own version of ChatGPT to arrive, because ChatGPT for Google shows results from the chatbot alongside the standard results from Google whenever you run a search.

Clearly this is going to work better for some queries than others: ChatGPT can't tell you the latest sports scores, but it can explain what DNA is. Make sure that you're currently signed into your ChatGPT account in your browser to get the responses to load.

The ChatGPT box is neatly integrated alongside the standard Google search results, and you can launch a separate ChatGPT conversation right from it. You can also have the add-on run manually rather than automatically, if you don't want it on every search.

Screenshot of Google search results in a browser window

Get ChatGPT right next to your Google results with ChatGPT for Google.

Enhanced ChatGPT does exactly what its name suggests: It adds some handy new features to the basic ChatGPT interface, including an option to export your chats in Markdown format and a selection of tools to help you with your prompts.

Some of those prompt tools include triggers for finding images on the web, getting travel advice, generating translations, and programming in JavaScript. They'll pop up immediately once you've installed the extension.

Look for the new Export Chat option down in the lower left corner when you've set up the add-on. You don't get anything in the way of export options, but it can be helpful to have a copy of your chats to refer to.

If you're planning to do any writing using ChatGPT on the web, from emails to social media posts, then WritingMate can help. You can launch it via a Ctrl+M (Windows) or Cmd+M (macOS) keyboard shortcut, or use the floating icon that appears on the right of the browser window.

You're able to use ChatGPT in any way you like, right in the webpages you're looking at, and there are some helpful prompts included with the extension too. ChatGPT responses can be swiftly tweaked and refined as well.

If you need more than 10 messages per day or longer messages, you can sign up for a $15-per-month premium account. The access you get to the tool for free should tell you whether or not you're going to find it useful.

There's no doubt that ChatGPT is an incredible bit of technology, but it also has its limitations: It doesn't have access to the most up-to-date information, and can't search the web as such.

WebChatGPT (for Chrome, Edge, and Firefox) fixes that, dropping in traditional web search results alongside AI responses in the ChatGPT interface. It also tries to integrate both types of responses to give you something coherent and useful.

This approach works better for some queries than others: Try prompts such as "Who is the President?" and "give me the latest Wired headlines" to see the difference that the extension makes to ChatGPT.

Screenshot of ChatGPT text box

Use WebChatGPT to bring the latest web search results into ChatGPT.

For some of us, it's much easier to talk than to type, and Promptheus enables you to talk to ChatGPT just as you would with a real person. It may give you a whole new perspective on interacting with AI.

You use Promptheus from inside the ChatGPT interface, and you simply press and hold the space bar when you're ready to talk. There are a few extension settings you can play around with too, such as the option to send prompts automatically once you stop talking.

As an added bonus, the extension also gives you easy access to ChatGPT from any webpage—just click on the add-on icon in your browser toolbar to start interacting with the AI bot.

One of the most important features that ChatGPT is missing is the ability to get content out of the ChatGPT interface into other places—you're pretty much limited to the good old copy-paste method.

ChatGPT Export and Share (which works in Chrome, Edge, and Firefox) is here to solve the problem. It takes a little bit more time in terms of setting it up in your browser, but full instructions are provided, and the end results are worth it.

Once the extension is installed, you'll see new export buttons down below the prompt box. You can save your chats as images and PDFs, and there's also the option to create shareable links to them.

How to Opt Out of Instagram and Facebook Using Your Posts for AI

Use Safari extensions on your Mac

Safari extensions enhance and customize the browsing experience on your Mac. Here's how to install them, uninstall them, or share them across devices.

Safari extensions add functionality to Safari, so you can explore the web the way you want. Extensions can show helpful information about a webpage, display news headlines, help you use your favorite services, change the appearance of webpages, and much more. Extensions are a great way to personalize your browsing experience.

Install extensions

Turn on extensions, turn off extensions, uninstall extensions, share extensions across devices.

Use the App Store to conveniently download and install Safari extensions. All extensions in the App Store are reviewed, signed, and hosted by Apple for your security, and they're automatically kept up to date.

Start by installing the latest macOS updates to make sure that Safari is up to date. You need Safari 12 or later to get Safari extensions from the App Store.

Open Safari and choose Safari > Safari Extensions from the menu bar.

The App Store opens to the Safari Extensions page. To download and install an extension, click Get or click the price. You might be asked to sign in with your Apple ID.

Click Install.

After the extension is installed, click Open and follow the onscreen instructions provided by the extension.

After installing an extension, follow these steps to turn it on.

Choose Safari > Settings (or Preferences).

Click Extensions.

Select the checkbox next to the extension's name. Learn what to do if you can't turn on extensions .

If you're browsing privately, or using a profile or web app

When browsing in a private window in macOS Sonoma or later, all extensions that require website access are turned off by default. To use an extension when browsing privately:

Choose Safari > Settings.

Select the extension in the sidebar, then select “Allow in Private Browsing” on the right.

Whether or not you're browsing privately, you can also restrict the extension's access to certain websites. Click the Edit Websites button to view the extension in Websites settings. From there you can allow access, deny access, or require that websites ask you for access.

When using Safari profiles , extensions for the default profile are managed in the main Extensions tab of Safari settings. Extensions for other profiles are managed in the Profiles tab, which has its own Extensions tab for each profile. By default, extensions are turned off for each new profile.

Share button

Choose Safari > Settings (or Preferences), then click Extensions.

To turn off an extension, deselect its checkbox.

If you can't determine what an extension does, or you don't expect to use it again, you should uninstall it.

To uninstall an extension, select the extension and click the Uninstall button.

Starting with macOS Ventura, iOS 16, and iPadOS 16, you can share extensions across your Mac, iPhone, and iPad:

On your Mac, open Safari and choose Safari > Settings, then click Extensions. Select “Share across devices” at the bottom of the window.

On your iPhone or iPad, go to Settings > Safari > Extensions, then turn on Share Across Devices.

No alt supplied for Image

To uninstall an extension from all devices, you must uninstall it on each device.

Safari no longer supports most web plug-ins. To load webpages more quickly, save energy, and strengthen security, Safari is optimized for content that uses the HTML5 web standard, which doesn't require a plug-in. To enhance and customize your browsing experience, use Safari extensions instead of web plug-ins.
