Rules and Regulations to Follow in Qatar
For first-time workers or visitors to Qatar, it is important to know and follow the rules. While Qatar is more liberal than Saudi Arabia, it also follows the Sharia Law.

The rules help in maintaining order for the citizens and residents. The laws cover a wide range of aspects in the country. Whether you are new or a veteran in the Gulf country, it pays to know the laws.
Get to Know these Rules and Regulations When in Qatar
When you are visiting or working in another country, knowing and obeying the laws of your host will ensure that you will make the most of your trip. If you are in Qatar, you should know that the country follows the Sharia Law.
Take the time to learn the prevailing laws in the country so you will avoid inconvenience or trouble later on. Here are some of the laws that apply to foreign workers in the country:
Entry and Exit Requirements
Some countries are allowed to enter Qatar without a visa, and there are also countries who enjoy visa-on-arrival as tourists. Meanwhile, citizens of some countries will need to apply for a visa in advance at their respective government offices.
Residents of any Gulf Cooperation Council can avail of a single entry visa-on-arrival to Qatar. But this is applicable if their Residence permit is valid for the next six months.
Expats are also required to carry their passports at all times. This is to show their identity and citizenship when asked by local authorities. Finally, expats also need to present proof of permission from their employers or support if they are leaving Qatar.
Identity Card
All residents are required to carry an ID card, especially their Qatar ID (QID). In particular, the QID is needed for government transactions, registering for utilities, schools, nurseries, and clubs. The ID card should also be presented when asked, otherwise the expat might face legal consequences. It is also important to note that the QID should always be up-to-date, and it is best to have a photocopy of it in a safe place in case the original gets lost.
Traffic Laws
Guests who are in Qatar for a short period can apply for an international global driving license to be allowed to drive in the country, or they could apply for a temporary Qatar driving license.. For those who will be staying for a longer period, they will need to apply for a driving license as soon as they arrive. As with other countries, drinking and driving is not allowed in this Gulf nation. Those who are caught doing so will be fined and banned from driving again.
Alcohol Consumption
Expats in Qatar can consume alcohol but should follow the limitations. One of the conditions is consuming alcohol in clubs and hotels. They can also buy liquor, for personal consumption, at the Qatar DIstribution Company, by showing their licenses. To apply for the license, the expat should present a letter from their employers, and should include information about the applicant’s designation, basic pay, accommodation, religious affiliation, conjugal status, and visa.
The country follows a conservative dress code. This means that foreign workers are not allowed to wear provocative clothing in public places. By wearing modest attire, the expat will not offend the customs and values of the host country.

Qatar Airways Reinvents Itself
The coronavirus pandemic dramatically changed the way we live and travel over a short period of time. The post-COVID-19 travel experience looks nothing like it used to; safety procedures and hygiene measures are being implemented to ensure maximum protection for both passengers and employees, and although it might seem overwhelming, it is necessary during these uncertain times.
Hamad International Airport continues operating as transit for passengers to reach their final destinations, and Qatar Airways continues serving its large network around the world.
Air travel during the lockdown
\”During this crisis, more passengers have chosen to fly with Qatar Airways than any other airline, and we appreciate the trust they have placed in us. We have become the largest global carrier flying over 50 million kilometers to repatriate over 1.8 million passengers on over 15,000 flights. This has enabled us to accumulate unrivaled experience of how to safely and reliably carry passengers during these uncertain times\” : Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive, His Excellency Mr. Akbar Al Baker.

Qatar Airways consistently continued its flights to an estimated 30 destinations on a total of 90 in its network. During this crisis, the airline has reunited an estimated 1.8 million passengers over 15,000 flights!
Qatar’s national carrier continues to rebuild its network in line with the reopening of global travel.
Read all about the destinations and restrictions in detail here: https://www.qatarairways.com/en/travel-alerts/COVID-19-update.html .
As air travel slowly reopens, both Hamad International Airport and Qatar Airways work hard to ensure that they offer high standard services to all passengers during their stopover in Qatar.
Who was flying during the Coronavirus lockdown?
January 2020 started with 1,75,861 flights per day, while on March 30, the recorded number was 74,297 according to Flightradar24; a more than 50% drop. Most flights for cargo continued, while the majoirty of passenger flights were grounded.
British Airways and Ryanair continued flying to bring people back home.
Most domestic flights in the US were running empty. On August 16, nearly 863,000 people passed through Transportation Security Administration checkpoints, and this can be described as the highest figure since March 17. It’s worth mentioning that this number is also the one-third of last years 2.5 million passengers, according to New York Times.
Meanwhile, Qatar Airways has adjusted its flying schedule and increased the number of flights to take advantage of the other airlines’ ground.
Travel Safety during your stopover at Hamad International Airport
Hamad International Airport introduced the latest technologies to ensure that all passengers travel with safety and confidence while the airport staff is trained to apply the strict hygiene protocols recommended by the World Health Organization.
Advanced thermal screening helmets are used to check passenger and staff temperature throughout the airport while, advanced face detection system scans passengers to ensure everyone is using masks.
As for disinfection methods, the fully autonomous mobile disinfection robot is one of the most significant allies in the battle against the virus; the robot uses ultra-violet light to kill germs in crucial areas of the airport, minimizing the risk of infection.

Furthermore, disinfection and sanitization of all high contact areas such as counters, stairs, and baggage belts continue while checked-in luggage and trolleys are being carefully disinfected. Hand sanitizers are distributed in key points across the airport, and social distancing signage helps ensure that the 1.5-meter distance between passengers is applied.
Qatar Airways Safety & Hygiene Measures
Qatar Airways has applied high-standard safety and hygiene procedures from check-in to arrival at each destination since the beginning of the pandemic. In accordance with the International Air Transport Association and the World Health Organization, the global airline has further enhanced its measures, as of recently.
In addition to wearing a face mask, all passengers are required to wear a face shield, which is distributed either at the check-in counters or on-board. The face mask is offered in two standard sizes; one for adults and one for children.
All passengers are also offered a protective kit on board; inside a ziplock pouch, the complimentary kit features a surgical mask, gloves, and a hand sanitizing gel.
To ensure the highest levels of hygiene on board, we are providing our passengers with a protective kit which includes a single-use surgical face mask, large disposable powder-free gloves and an alcohol-based hand sanitiser gel. #QatarAirways pic.twitter.com/vHsEXtblRC — Qatar Airways (@qatarairways) September 11, 2020
The airline has also introduced a new, personalized protective gown for its cabin crew to wear along with the face mask, gloves, and glasses.
The airline has also modified its boarding process for limited contact between passengers, encourages social distancing, and strongly advises to avoid travelling if a passenger experiences any symptoms related to COVID-19.

Qatar Airways Will Launch SpaceX Starlink WiFi On 3 Boeing 777-300ER In Q4 Of This Year
- Qatar Airways has announced its plans to launch complimentary WiFi on three Boeing 777-300ERs by Q4 2024.
- SpaceX's Starlink will be provide the internet connectivity to the airline.
- Other airlines like airBaltic, Air New Zealand, and Hawaiian Airlines, have also announced intentions to use Starlink for internet connectivity.
Qatar Airways has announced that it will launch Starlink WiFi services onboard its Boeing 777-300ER aircraft in Q4 2024, adding the service to three aircraft of the type initially. The airline will upgrade its entire modern fleet of aircraft with the internet connectivity solution within two years.
Complimentary WiFi
According to the airline, it would be the first carrier to offer complimentary WiFi services enabled by SpaceX’s Starlink solution in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. Qatar Airways said that three Boeing 777-300ER aircraft would be fitted with hardware capable of receiving a signal from the thousands of Starlink satellites by Q4 2024.
Qatar Airways and SpaceX announced the development at the Aircraft Interior Expo (AIX) in Hamburg, Germany, on May 29. Badr Mohammed Al-Meer, Qatar Airways Group's chief executive officer (CEO), and Mike Nicolls, SpaceX's Vice President of Starlink Engineering, were present in Germany.
The carrier stated that the move has solidified its commitment to elevating its passenger experience onboard its aircraft. Qatar Airways plans to progressively extend the complimentary WiFi service throughout its entire fleet within the next two years.
WOW: Qatar Airways Is The Best Airline In The World 2024
Customer-first mindset.
According to Al-Meer, the partnership with Starlink was a testament to Qatar Airways’ customer-first mindset and its commitment to elevating the experience for its guests to unprecedented heights. The CEO added that the airline continues improving its innovative offerings to meet and exceed passengers’ expectations when traveling with Qatar Airways.
Meanwhile, Nicolls stated that Starlink’s high-speed and low-latency internet was the future of connectivity within aviation, adding that the US-based company was excited to work with Qatar Airways on this project and to install its hardware on three 777-300ERs initially.
Soon, all Qatar Airways passengers will be able to enjoy all the benefits of the worlds best in-flight connectivity from the comfort of their seats.
How Does Starlink Aviation Work & Which Airlines Use It?
Airlines using starlink.
Several airlines across the globe have announced or begun using Starlink for their in-flight connectivity, including airBaltic, Air New Zealand, and Hawaiian Airlines. Hawaiian Airlines was the first carrier to announce a partnership with Starlink on April 25, 2022, saying that it would equip its Airbus A330 and A321neo aircraft and the incoming Boeing 787-9s in 2023.
However, it launched flights with Starlink on February 8, 2024, becoming the world’s first major airline to use the solution to provide its customers with high-speed, low-latency internet connectivity onboard. The first aircraft equipped with Starlink was an Airbus A321neo, registered as N228HA.
Meanwhile, airBaltic began testing Starlink’s internet on March 28. The Riga Airport (RIX)-based carrier only tested the solution on the ground, with the airline adding that it was still working with SpaceX to receive the required supplemental type certificate (STC). airBaltic stated that it anticipated the first hardware installations on its aircraft by the end of 2024.
Air New Zealand announced its collaboration with Starlink in December 2023, promising that it would begin offering internet on its ATR turboprops and regional jets in late 2024. After a successful trial, the Kiwi carrier would look to equip its domestic fleet with the solution in 2025.

12 people injured, 8 hospitalized after Qatar Airways flight hits severe turbulence
At least a dozen people traveling to Ireland Sunday were injured after a Qatar Airways flight from Doha to Dublin hit turbulence .
Flight QR017 landed at Dublin Airport around 1:00 p.m. local time and reported to the airport that six passengers and six crew members suffered injuries after the flight was shaken by turbulence over Turkey, according to a statement from the airport posted on X, formerly known as Twitter.
All passengers were assessed for injuries prior to leaving the aircraft and eight passengers were taken to the hospital, according to the airport.
Qatar Airways said in a statement to USA TODAY that the incident is subject to an internal investigation.
This is the second notable turbulence incident in a week after a Singapore Airlines flight that was set to travel from London to Singapore hit severe turbulence and was diverted to Thailand. One person died in the incident, and dozens were injured.

What causes turbulence?
There are different kinds of turbulence on an airplane, and they're caused by different factors:
- Mountain wave turbulence, as the name suggests, happens when the wind hits a mountain and is forced upward off its blustery path. That's why it's common to hit some bumps when you're flying over the Rockies on a transcontinental flight across the U.S.
- Convective turbulence is generally associated with storms and is caused by warm air rising.
- Clear air turbulence can be caused by a number of potential sources and is generally harder to predict than the other two types. but it is also the most likely kind to affect aircraft. And because it's harder to predict, it can also be harder to avoid.
In the U.S., the Federal Aviation Administration reported 163 passengers and crew were seriously injured by turbulence between 2009 and 2022.
