15 Best Things to Do in Esperance (Australia)

In perfect isolation 720 kilometres east-southeast of Perth , Esperance is a port town on a beautiful stretch of coast.

The beaches are some of the best in Australia, with flawless sand so white it looks like snow.

Esperance’s sheltered bays are bathed by transparent waters that glow from the pristine sand underneath.

Along the coast in both directions are rounded cliffs, dunes, headlands and granite peaks, while the granite humps of the Recherche Island rise offshore.

Spreading out over Esperance’s interior is some of Australia’s most productive arable land, harvesting grain exported from the harbour via massive bulk carriers.

1. Cape Le Grand National Park

Cape Le Grand National Park

On Esperance’s east flank is more than 30,000 hectares of white sandy beaches, wild heathland and stirring granite topography.

Several of the items in this list are within Cape Le Grand National Park’s boundaries, and you can pick up trails to climb those granite peaks or follow one of the world’s most beautiful coastlines along the Le Grand Coastal Trail.

Much of the terrain is under a blanket of heathland, inhabited by pygmy possums and grey kangaroos that will often hop down to the beaches.

Spend the night at campgrounds at Lucky Bay and Le Grand Beach, equipped with picnic tables, barbecues, running water and toilets.

2. Lucky Bay

Lucky Bay

While surveying the Southern Coast in 1802, explorer and cartographer Matthew Flinders (1774-1814), moored HMS Investigator in this bay to shelter from a storm.

He later named it Lucky Bay, and the ship’s botanist Robert Brown came ashore here, discovering a catalogue of species new to science at the time.

As it was in Flinders’ day, Lucky Bay is sheltered, and has the snow white sands and crystalline waters that Esperance is famous for.

There’s great fishing, snorkelling and surfing, while humpback and southern right whales swim close by in winter.

If you visit late in the day, don’t be surprised to be sharing the sunset with the local mob of kangaroos.

3. Twilight Bay

Twilight Bay

The pick for family beach trips in Esperance has to be Twilight Bay, touted among the best beaches in the country.

All of the hallmarks of Esperance’s coastline are here, from the brilliant white sand to the clear, light blue waters and the low, heath-covered cliffs.

But what really elevates Twilight Bay are the granite reefs and outcrops on the west end, causing a kind of natural water park with calm, transparent waters and rocks for children to scramble over and jump off.

It’s a perfect environment for swimming, paddleboarding and snorkelling, while the more boisterous waves on the east side are surfable.

Twilight Bay is patrolled on summer weekends, and has shower and bathroom facilities.

4. Esperance Museum

Esperance Museum

This museum delving has a super setting, in an atmospheric old goods shed at Esperance’s former railway marshalling yards.

Below these old beams you can investigate different strands from Esperance’s past, like the town’s French connection, the sinking of the Sanko Harvest bulk carrier in 1991, Esperance’s pioneers and the coming of the railway in the 1920s.

Some of the highlights are a piano from the 1820s, a lifeboat from the Sanko Harvest and the restored locomotive W919. The museum also boasts the world’s most detailed display on NASA’s Skylab space station, launched in 1973 and falling back to earth not far outside Esperance in 1979. The Shire of Esperance even charged NASA a $400 fine for littering!

5. Great Ocean Drive

Aerial View of Great Ocean Drive in Esperance

You may gather that the Goldfields-Esperance Region has loads of amazing coastal scenery.

So much in fact that there’s a 40km driving trail to help you see the best of it.

The Great Ocean Drive starts out in Esperance and goes west along the Twilight Beach Road, along cliff-tops, past granite outcrops and next to some of the world’s most beautiful beaches.

Take the road between May and December and you can pause at lookouts to catch sight of humpback or southern right whales.

There are 23 recommended stops on the Great Ocean Drive, from hidden coves to windswept beaches and giant windfarms harnessing the ocean breezes.

6. Middle Island & Pink Lake Hillier Scenic Flight

This 90-minute flight is available through the online tour platform GetYourGuide.com and will give you a sparkling picture of Esperance and the immense beauty that lies just offshore.

Taking off from Esperance Airport, the flight is bound for the Recherche Archipelago, but on the way you can cast your eyes over the scrolling farmland in the town’s backcountry and the pure white beaches on the coast.

As you approach Middle Island, you’ll be captivated by the otherworldly pinkish tint of Lake Hillier on its north-east corner.

This permanent hue is caused by a type of green micro-algae common in saline lakes.

7. Woody Island

Woody Island

You can take a leisured ferry ride out to Woody Island, 15 kilometres off Esperance in the Recherche Archipelago.

Listed as a nature reserve and covering 2.4 square kilometres, it’s the only island in the group that can be accessed by visitors.

On the crossing you’ll have the chance to spot marine life like dolphins, seals, sea lions and white-bellied sea eagles.

Woody Island Eco Tours built a visitor centre here 20 years ago and can arrange all sorts of activities like snorkelling in sheltered and nature-rich waters, fishing from the jetty and guided nature walks.

You could also just bask in the island’s tranquillity and grab a bite from the kiosk, or something cold from Black Jacks Bar.

8. Frenchman Peak

Frenchman Peak

Part of a chain of prominent granite formations in the south-west of Cape Le Grand National Park, Frenchman Peak presents a tough but very satisfying challenge for walkers.

The name describes the peak’s resemblance to the hats worn by French soldiers in the 19th century and rises 262 metres above the park for distant panoramas.

The route to the summit up the east side is a stiff three-kilometre return, requiring about two hours.

Near the top is a system of tunnels and caves, carved out by wave action around 40 million years ago when sea levels were around 300 metres higher than present.

Avoid Frenchman Peak in wet weather as the steep slopes become slippery.

9. West Beach

West Beach

If you can’t get enough of Esperance’s crisp white sandy beaches, the south-facing West Beach is on the Twilight Beach Road, just below the Rotary Lookout.

The Southern Ocean pummels South Beach, giving it a wild splendour that is amplified by the granite cliffs, headlands and the islands of the Recherche Archipelago offshore.

The deceptively large swells are a hit with surfers, but bathers are better off in the shallow area created by a long sandbar, as the rip tides are strong.

And as you’d expect, the sunrises and sunsets are sublime here set off by those tall headlands flanking the beach.

10. Observatory Point

Observatory Point

A fantastic place to stretch your legs on the Great Ocean Drive, Observatory Point is a wave-battered promontory capped with a lookout platform.

Climb the stairway for a panorama that you’ll want to linger over for as long as possible.

Laid out below you is the mesmerising blue tone of the Southern Ocean, the dark green vegetation of the cliffs and solemn granite formations strong against the waves.

Dotting the horizon are the islands of the Recherche Archipelago, the closest of which is Observatory Island separated from Observatory Point by a narrow strait.

11. Rotary Lookout

Rotary Lookout

The summit of the bulky granite outcrop, Wireless Hill is the highest point for several miles and gives you phenomenal views of the ocean, the Recherche Archipelago, Esperance’s sandy beaches and the town itself.

A circular walking trail wends its way through the brush, taking you to another vantage point on the west side where you can look right along West Beach.

There’s an orientation table on the platform to help you get your bearings, and you can take some time to watch the bulk carriers manoeuvring in and out of port, just to the north.

12. Lucky Bay Brewing

Lucky Bay Brewing

A lot of the expansive farmland in Esperance’s hinterland is given over to barley, almost all of which is exported to make malt for beer.

Lucky Bay Brewing sources this high-quality barley directly from local farmers, and has developed a way to use 75% raw barely in its brews.

So you can be certain that you’ll be tasting something completely local here.

In the regular line-up when we wrote this list in 2020 was a Barley Pale Ale, a German-style Kölsch, a Blonde Ale, a Witbier, a Dark Ale, an IPA, a Farmhouse Ale and “Lockdown”, special Dark Ale developed during Covid-19. To find out more you can pre-book a tour of the brewery, or visit the taproom, open Thursday to Sunday and baking its own pizzas.

13. Esperance Stonehenge

Esperance Stonehenge

The world’s only full-size replica of Stonehenge took shape in Esperance in the 2010s.

Built from the local pinkish granite instead of bluestone, the Esperance Stonehenge has been designed to reflect the layout of the original as it would have been around 1950 BCE.

The 137 hunks of granite used in its construction were all quarried less than a kilometre from this site and placed to align with the Solstices at this location.

So in the morning of the Summer Solstice (22 December) the rising sun shines through the Station Stones to the Altar Stone, and the same alignment occurs in the opposite direction at sunset on the Winter Solstice (21 June).

14. Wharton Beach

Wharton Beach

For those willing to travel there’s another jaw-dropping beach on the east side of Cape Le Grand National Park, about an hour by road from Esperance.

If it were anywhere else in the world, Wharton Beach would attract visitors in their droves.

As it is, most of the traffic comes from Esperance locals, and with three kilometres of pristine white sand you’ll have acres of space to yourself.

That sand is super-fine, even by Esperance standards, to the point that it even squeaks underfoot.

The beach is set back from the open ocean in a scallop-shaped bay, which makes the water even clearer, with just enough swell for surfers.

If you don’t want to make the return trip so soon you can book a berth at the Duke of Orleans Bay Caravan Park, next door.

15. Esperance Visitor Centre

Visitor Information Centre

A useful first port of call, specially for first-timers, the Esperance Visitor Centre will ensure your trip goes as smoothly as possible.

You can book accommodation, transport and tours, and consult the well-informed staff for travel inspiration.

What’s more, the visitor centre is set in the Esperance Museum Village, preserving various historic buildings from the town’s past.

There’s a schoolhouse, a doctor’s surgery, courthouse to name a handful, all given a new purpose as shops and galleries.

The Museum Village also hosts a market for fresh produce and arts and crafts, held once a fortnight on Sunday mornings.

See Some of Mother Nature’s Best Work on Esperance Shore Excursions

The southwest coast of Western Australia is famous for its unspoiled natural beauty. On a cruise to Australia that stops in the port city of Esperance, shore excursions entice you to discover and be awed by Mother Nature’s handiwork. On Esperance shore excursions, you can explore the town, cruise the Bay of Isles, enjoy the natural wonders of Cape Le Grand National Park, or live the laid-back Aussie life for a day.

For some of the most spectacular scenery you’ll ever see, book Esperance shore excursions that follow the Great Ocean Drive, a coastal highway that winds its way along Australia’s western shores for over 60 miles. On this captivating drive, you’ll see beaches that boast some of the whitest sand in the world and impossibly blue ocean waters that seem to go on forever. Visit a glassworks art gallery and a shark- leather studio to admire local artisans’ handiwork, and shop as you please.

Take a wildlife cruise to Recherche Archipelago, known to the locals as “Bay of Isles,” on a popular Esperance cruise excursion.  Over 100 pristine islands make up the archipelago, and it’s one of the few places on earth left that’s relatively untouched by time and man. As you cruise the waters, you’ll see islands that are simple granite outcroppings with steep inclines, islands with lush vegetation surrounded by white sand, and others that support varied native wildlife. It’s usual to see sea lions, fur seals, wallabies, and many species of birds and reptiles. You might even spot dolphins playing in the waters.

Once you’ve heard that Esperance has the whitest beaches in the world, you can’t help but want to experience them first hand, and an Australian shore excursion to Cape Le Grand National Park is just the ticket. At Lucky Bay, walk on a beach that’s so white and soft that the sand squeaks under your feet. Lounge for a bit as you share the sand with kangaroos who are happy to laze in the sun.

Experience the Aussie lifestyle while visiting from your cruise to Esperance on an excursion that takes you to a favorite local beach, then hop over to the Condingup Tavern, a neighborhood hotspot, for burgers and beer.

Middle Island is located 70 nautical miles from Esperance and features beautifully clear turquoise waters and an incredibly pink lake named Lake Hillier. We have also taken countless private groups down to view the island.

Film & Research

Esperance Island Cruises have played a large roll in documentaries and research that have been carried out in Southern Australia. Working with Australian Broadcasting Channel, Tokyo Broadcasting, Red Bull & Billabong to name a few. Also carrying out research with iconic organisations such as the Australian Museum.

Sadly, Lake Hillier received about 200 mm of rain 11 months ago which flooded the lake with soil from the surrounding island. This has turned the lake a brown colour. Unfortunately, for this reason we have no trips there planned at the moment. Experts believe it will probably be 12-24 months before it returns pink again.

We are still operating a regular 3 1/2 hour scenic wildlife cruises and we would love to have you join us on one of those. You can see all the information about that here https://www.esperancecruises.com.au/cruise/

21+ of the Best Things to Do in Esperance: Australia’s Most Beautiful Coastline

We traveled 7 hours southeast from Perth to discover the best things to do in Esperance, WA, a pretty coastal town on Australia’s most beautiful coastline.

I know, I know. That’s a big call.

We don’t take it lightly.

But after spending two years circumnavigating the continent, I can say that Esperance is home to the most beautiful collection of beaches I have ever seen.

From Whitsunday’s White Haven beach to Tasmania’s Wine Glass Bay , from Angourie in the East to Turquoise Bay in the West, and the beaches of the Great Ocean Road , we have seen a lot of coastlines. But Esperance takes the cake.

The superlative Esperance is a rare place where photoshopped tourism brochures are a shadow of the real deal. Beautiful turquoise water swirls over pure white sand, creating mesmerizing patterns in a spellbinding display. Beach after beach along the dramatic seaboard offers sweeping views of the rugged coast.

So, aside from the jaw-dropping beauty of this pristine coastline, what else can you expect in Esperance, Western Australia? Well, it’s a surprising amount for such a remote town.

From fresh local produce to fine dining. Beachfront camping to trendy accommodation. From big wave surfing to mini-golf, the town of Esperance has something for everyone. Discover what floats your boat with this list of the best things to do in Esperance.

Thinking about a Western Australian road trip? Find the perfect campervan or car!

What Is Esperance Known For?

If the title doesn’t give it away, Esperance is known for its amazing beaches, rocky coves, pristine waters, and wild coastline. Here in Esperance, it is all about exploring the nature that abounds nearby.

It is also regularly included in Australia’s top 50 windiest places, so make sure you come prepared with a windbreaker!

Best Things to Do in Esperance Outdoors

The great ocean drive.

Okay, so the name might be a little derivative, recalling Australia’s most famous coastal drive, The Great Ocean Road in Victoria. But this 40 km drive can be done in a morning and will leave you stunned by the natural beauty that surrounds Esperance.

Headland after headland, pristine beach after pristine beach, the Great Ocean Drive is easily one of the best things to do in Esperance.

Some of the best beaches in Esperance can be found along this iconic drive. Notable stops along the Great Ocean Drive include Eleven Mile Beach, Observatory Point, Fourth Beach, and Blue Haven.

Camp at Lucky Bay

For $15 per night, you can camp above one of Australia’s most beautiful beaches.

Aside from large shady campsites with views above the stunning beach, you’ll find first-rate facilities, including hot solar showers.

Lucky Bay is also one of the few places in Australia where you can see kangaroos on the beach. Could anything be more emblematic of Australia than kangaroos enjoying the world’s most gorgeous beaches?

Hike along the Coastal Trail in Cape Le Grande National Park

Cape Le Grande National Park is one of Western Australia’s most incredible national parks. If you’re not content to relax in the incredible surrounds of the Lucky Bay campground, you can get out and discover the surrounding wilderness. One of the best ways to explore some of the best beaches in Esperance is to hit the trails along the Coastal Trail.

This 20-kilometer end-to-end trail starts at Rossiter Beach and ends at Le Grande Beach. It is recommended to complete the trail over a multi-day hike but can easily be completed with a full-day (8-hour) hike leaving you plenty of time to take in the natural beauty of Cape Le Grande.

You can also complete sections of the hike if you don’t have the time (or desire) to complete a 20-kilometer hike.

The trail includes beach walking, undulating hills over headlands, and breathtaking views.

Like many of the best national parks in Western Australia, entrance to Cape Le Grande costs $15 per vehicle, payable in cash at the entrance. Alternatively, national park holiday passes and annual passes can be obtained only from the WA Parks and Wildlife website .

Bay Watch in Cape Le Grande National Park

If you left your hiking boots at home, don’t be deterred, Cape le Grande’s best sights can also be seen by car. Cape Le Grande National Park is most recognized for its amazing white silica sand beaches, rocky headlands, and mesmerizing blue waters. In fact, a fair number of the best beaches in Esperance can all be found just minutes away from each other here in Cape Le Grande.

The first of the beautiful bays to be explored in Cape Le Grande is Hellfire Bay, a beautiful wild beach nestled between two rocky headlands. From here, continue onward to Little Hellfire Bay, a small protected cove nearby, perfect for a refreshing dip.

The beauty of this park, however, doesn’t stop here as you continue even further to Thistle Cove and Whistling Rock. Thistle Cove is particularly special as the beauty of the beach remains unspoiled, with 4WD access prohibited.

Next, continue to Lucky Bay for your chance to spot a Western Grey Kangaroo basking in the sun on the beach before you hop off to Rossiter Bay, the final bay accessible by car in the national park.

Hike to Frenchmans Peak

Frenchmans Peak is a Class 5 summit in Cape Le Grande National Park.

This challenging 3-kilometer hike to reach the summit of Frenchmans Peak 262 meters above sea level is not for the faint of heart and should not be completed in incremental weather due to the slipper granite rock climbing.

However, those who are up for the challenge will be rewarded with endless views over Australia’s southern coastline.

Get Back to Basics at Stokes National Park and Quagi Beach

Another national park near Esperance is Stokes National Park. This national park is located to the west of Esperance and offers self-sufficient campers the opportunity to camp right behind the beautiful and uncrowded Quagi Beach.

Spend your days exploring the many rock pools, walking along the sandy beach, or even grabbing your fishing rod for beach fishing.

You will want to make sure you have plenty of provisions when visiting Quagi Beach, as you will likely want to stay a few days.

Explore Cape Arid National Park

Cape Arid National Park is another national park in Western Australia that is well worth a side trip. Another 120 kilometers further east from Esperance, this national park is known for its four-wheel-drive tracks and breathtaking beaches.

The best way to experience Cape Arid National Park is by tackling one of the many hiking trails. The Tagon Coastal Trail is a 15-kilometer return hike along rock headlands for a chance to see migrating whales.

The Len Otte 2.7km loop celebrates the woodlands in Cape Arid National Park, named after the first resident ranger.

For more challenging hikes, consider the Mt Ragged Walking Trail is a 3-kilometer summit providing expansive views over the northern woodlands of the national park, or the 2-kilometer return Mount Arid summit with views over the Recherché Archipelago.

Explore Woody Island

One of 105 islands in the Recherche Archipelago, Woody Island is a great addition to any Esperance itinerary. An island abounding in nature, there is plenty to do here, from exploring the walking trails that traverse the island to snorkeling in the pristine blue waters.

Day trips can be arranged with Woody Island Eco Tours , and the island allows private moorings at the jetty if you are traveling by boat.

Those who are interested in extending their stay on Woody Island can book overnight stays in one of the safari huts available through Woody Island Eco Tours, or you can bring your own camping gear.

Ride The Piggery

Mountain bike enthusiasts will absolutely love the 16-kilometer trail outside of Esperance known as “The Piggery.”

Designed by mountain bikers for mountain bikers, this epic trail is not to be missed.

For those traveling light, mountain bikes can be rented from Dempster Sporting across from the museum park.

Best Things to Do in Esperance in the Water

Scuba dive to australia’s largest wreck.

Scuba diving may not be the first thing you think of when you picture Esperance, but it is easily one of the best things to do here.

The waters off of Esperance are home to the world’s second-largest and Australia’s largest wreck dive, the Sanko Harvest. The Sanko Harvest was a 174-meter cargo ship that met its demise in February of 1991 after hitting a chartered reef. For experienced divers, the wreck is teeming with an abundance of marine life and should be on any serious diver’s bucket list while traveling Australia.

Other dives near Esperance include shore diving along the Tanker Jetty for your chance to see the rare leafy sea dragon, one of the most interesting creatures under the sea.

Fishing is one of the best ways to spend time as the sun goes down in Esperance. Beach fishing is allowed at many of the beaches in and around Esperance.

The most popular fish amongst anglers here are herring, skippy, salmon, flathead, and whiting. Depending on where you drop a line, you might also catch a few tailor, malloway, or gummy sharks.

Checkout One of the World’s Heaviest Waves

With a name like Cyclops, it may not be surprising that this wave is one of the world’s heaviest and most dangerous waves. Located off the coast of Esperance, reaching Cyclops requires determination, and surfing Cyclops should only be undertaken by pros.

Cyclops is named for the oval-like barrels that form when massive amounts of water hit the shallow reef below.

Best Things to Do in Esperance Dining and Culture

Grab a coffee from cloud eleven.

If the rustic vibe of this chic cafe doesn’t do it for you, then their coffee certainly will. Some of the best coffee we have had during our lap around Australia, Cloud Eleven in Esperance knows just how to make that perfect brew.

Don’t be surprised if you can’t find a seat here. On the weekends, this place fills up early and stays busy until the doors close at 1:00 pm.

Experience the Vibing Local Arts Scene

Don’t let the remoteness of this small Western Australian town fool you. Along with some of the best beaches in Australia, Esperance is also home to a budding art scene. From Australian renowned artists such as Cindy Poole to a one-of-a-kind fish tannery, the art on display in Esperance will not cease to amaze.

A few of the best locations to visit to be inspired are:

  • Cindy Poole Gallery & Studio for highly-lauded glass designs
  • Mermaid Leather for Australia’s only specialist fish and shark leather tannery
  • Cannery Arts Centre showcases local and regional artists and regularly hosts community events and exhibitions to support the local arts scene.

Many of the galleries and exhibits in town are provided at no cost making it one of the best free things to do in Esperance.

Take in a Market or Two (or Three)

Soaking up the community at a local market is one of the best things to do in any town, and this is no exception in Esperance. There are three markets held regularly in Esperance, depending on the time of the year or day of the week you visit.

The “Village Green”, located at the Museum Village, is the home of the Museum Village Markets, which are hosted every second Sunday throughout the year from 8:30 am – 12:30 pm. The Museum Village Markets primarily focus on local artisanal goods from the area, with a few food vendors to choose from.

The Esperance Sunset Markets are also hosted on the Village Green between February and May each year. The Sunset Markets usually are on a Friday evening and are packed full of local market stalls and food vendors. It is a great way to watch the sunset over the ocean.

Lastly, the Esperance Growers Markets is the best chance at grabbing some of the freshest produce in the area. One Saturday a month, from 9:00 am – 11:00 am, the farmers in the area come together at Scouts Hall to showcase their finest and best produce. From baked goods to preserves, from fresh spinach to leafy greens, make sure to get in early so you don’t miss out on the best veggies and produce in town!

Mini-Golf Sundays

I grew up playing miniature golf with my family back in the United States. Playing mini-golf on beach holidays is something I have fond memories of every beach holiday. Stumbling upon a mini-golf in Esperance seemed like fate.

The indoor course in Esperance might be due for a bit of an update, and the opening hours are a little restrictive. Nevertheless, if you find yourself in the right place at the right time, it’s a great way to spend an hour or two and is especially fun for the kiddos.

Grab a Feed at Fish Face

Not your typical fish and chips joint, Fish Face is one-upping most other joints in Australia.

Using fresh seafood straight from the coastal waters off Esperance, the duo behind Fish Face offers an exciting menu for those passing through Esperance. Think smokey paprika octopus, scallops topped with crispy prosciutto and cauliflower puree, and bass cod rillettes.

Best of all, Fish Face is BYO friendly, so more $$ for their seriously delicious seafood!

Fish Face is only open for dinners between 4:30 pm and 8:00 pm from Tuesday to Saturday. Bookings are advised to avoid disappointment.

Drop in for a Cold One at Lucky Bay Brewery

One of the most lauded breweries in Western Australia, if you’re partial to the occasional cold one, a visit to Lucky Bay Brewery is one of the best things to do in Esperance. Using locally sourced barley and taking inspiration from nearby attractions, you will find beers such as Thistle Cove, Sandy Hook, and Cyclops, to name a few.

Lucky Bay Brewery also regularly hosts live music and has some pretty good wood-fired pizzas to make for a highly enjoyable afternoon.

Yirri Grove Olive Farm

Food lovers should not miss the opportunity to visit Yirri Grove on any trip to Esperance.

Open seasonally, this paddock-to-plate eatery located just outside of Esperance is the perfect place to experience some of the local produce on offer in the area.

Pop in for an olive oil tasting or stay longer and enjoy a beautifully prepared meal with friends and family. Another BYO destination, Yirri Grove is simply one of the best things to do in Esperance.

Esperance Museum

History buffs will enjoy the Esperance Museum. A collection of artifacts and mementos, this small museum provides a glimpse into the story of Esperance.

The museum is open from 1:30 pm – 4:30 pm from Thursday to Sunday and costs $8.50 per adult ($3.50 per child) to enter.

Catch a Flick Outdoors with Moving Movies Esperance

Moving Movies is a family-friendly outdoor cinema in Esperance during the summer season. Catch a movie suitable for the whole family at the Soundshell.

Check out the Moving Movies Facebook page for up-to-date information on showtimes and movie picks!

Attend a Festival in Esperance

Esperance is home to a wide variety of festivals and events in the area. Some of the notable festivals or events in the area include,

A French Weekend

If you love all things French, then make sure to plan your holiday to Esperance for a superbly French weekend. Events such as French film night, a tour de Esperance, and French-inspired Museum Village Markets are a few of the highlights of this iconic weekend in Esperance.

Edge of the Bay Festival

An annual community event occurring in December each year, the Edge of the Bay Festival is action-packed with music line-ups, food and market stalls, and arts and crafts at the local skate park. As well as skate, BMX, and scooter competitions throughout the day.

Esperance Deep Sea Angling Classic

Fishermen from around Western Australia flock to Esperance in March each year for their crack at the prize money for the best catch.

Hundreds of boats head out to sea in search of the biggest, baddest fish. Returning for the weigh-in in the afternoon to crown the champion.

So, Is Esperance Worth Visiting?

Despite its remote location, Esperance is one of the most exciting places to visit along Western Australia’s southern coastline. With stunning scenery, outdoor adventures, food, and culture to boot, Esperance makes for a wonderful weekend or holiday destination.

Western Australia's most popular tourist town Esperance is located on the Southern Ocean around half way between Albany and the South Australian border.

Esperance is a lovely place to visit and wander around.

Located 720km southeast of Perth, this seaside beauty exceeds expectations every time. It’s got some of the country’s most stunning coastline and has been voted as having among the best beaches and surfing, not to mention plenty of great fishing opportunities for those who love to fish.

Here you’ll find beaches lined with Norfolk pines, incredible houses and Australia’s first wind farm at Salmon Beach. There are some great cycling and walking tracks and the area is surrounded by national parks making it a nature lover’s dream destination.

Of particular interest is Cape Le Grand National Park , 20 minutes away and the 105 granite islands that make up the Recherche Archipelago. This was a favorite haunt for Australia’s only recorded pirate, Black Jack Anderson, who frequented the area in the 1830s.
