Lumphini Park

Bangkok’s Lumpini Park (pronounced “Loom-pee-nee”) is a pleasant, 142-acre space in the heart of Thailand’s capital. Any urban green space is to be cherished, but even more so in a busy city of over 8 million people!

Lumpini Park serves as a needed respite from the hustle of Bangkok’s streets and sidewalks. It’s a place where people can sit, exercise, or check out some of the many activities on offer every day.

But Lumpini Park is more than just an inexpensive diversion . The space is home to a number of permanent facilities and seasonal activities. Locals and tourists alike are drawn to the park for things to do beyond just lounging around on sarongs.

Lumpini Park gets its name from Lumbini, the birthplace of Siddhartha Gautama (later to become Buddha) in Nepal. The space was set aside from royal land in the 1920s and then later turned into the first park in Bangkok. It is still the largest in the city.

Thailand was invaded by Japanese forces in 1941 during World War II. Japanese soldiers actually used Lumpini Park as a camp, after which Allies bombed the city. The statue of King Rama VI, the king responsible for creating the park, was erected in 1942.

How to Get to Lumpini Park

Lumpini Park is centrally located in Bangkok. The quickest way to get there is by train unless you’re coming from the Khao San Road / Soi Rambuttri area , a tourist-oriented neighborhood where no BTS or MRT lines reach.

Most of Lumpini Park is surrounded by walls. You'll need to enter through one of the six gates. The main entrance is arguably the one in the southwestern corner near the royal monument and MRT station.

By Train: The Silom MRT station (Blue Line) is located in the southwestern corner of Lumpini Park. The Lumpini MRT station is at the southeastern corner. The nearest BTS (skytrain) station is Sala Daeng, just a little south of Lumpini Park. Sala Daeng is located along the BTS Silom Line. If you’re coming from the Sukhumvit Line , which is often the case, you’ll need to change lines in the Siam BTS station.

From Khao San Road: Lumpini Park is around 90 minutes of hot walking from the Khao San Road area. Going by taxi is easiest . Some drivers will refuse to use the meter; if this happens, simply flag another. If you’ve never taken a tuk-tuk ride in Bangkok , now’s your chance! Just know that tuk-tuks are typically more hassle, less comfortable, and no cheaper for tourists than a metered taxi. You’ll need to negotiate a fare with the driver. Don’t agree to stop at any shops along the way; this is a classic scam.

Going somewhere in Bangkok by tuk-tuk may involve bonus hassle, but doing so at least once is a rite of passage for visitors!

What to Know Before Visiting

  • Park hours are from 4:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.
  • Smoking is prohibited throughout the park. Tourists are frequently caught and fined. Don't do it!
  • Dogs are not allowed.
  • Cycling is banned after 3 p.m.
  • Wi-Fi can be found throughout the park, but signal strength varies. Use it with care as you would any unsecured public network.
  • Sleeping in the park isn’t permitted, although you could probably get away with a nap.
  • Excessive displays of public affection are generally frowned upon in Thai culture. Too much cuddling can cause locals to feel embarrassment .

Where to Eat in the Park

Food carts are dotted throughout , with the highest concentration clustered around the main entrance in the southwest. For more local-oriented choices, check out the vendors selling treats along the northern border of the park.

Many carts cater to the morning fitness crowd. Depending on how much business they received in the morning, many vendors may be closed by noon.

The Giant Lizards in Lumpini Park

The giant monitor lizards that call the lake home may look like Komodo dragons but thankfully aren’t dangerous. They are, however, in the same family as their venomous cousins and can have a nasty temperament when cornered. The Thai word for these lizards ( hia ) also serves as a profane insult. In other words, it’s best to leave them alone.

For years, the monitor lizards in Lumpini Park have grown in size and audacity, both attracting and spooking Western visitors. In 2016, the government relocated approximately 100 large lizards, however, hundreds were left behind. The lizards are a part of the ecosystem serving as scavengers who clean up dead fish, birds, and other creatures.

Although the monitor lizards aren’t dangerous, they do grow to frightening sizes — some are close to 10 feet long! For obvious reasons, you shouldn’t attempt to feed or interact with them in any way.

Things to Do in Bangkok’s Lumpini Park

Although the 142 acres (57.6 hectares) of park are generous, an estimated 15,000 people pass through daily. Don’t expect to have very much privacy.

Along with permanent attractions such as an outdoor gym, indoor dance hall, and library (Bangkok’s first), a number of groups meet in the park to share activities. Weekends are particularly eventful, and most clubs meet in evenings when the heat is more tolerable.

Early mornings are especially busy as people come to exercise. Jogging two circuits of the park is roughly the same as completing a 5K!

  • Exercise: You can jog, cycle, and rollerblade in the park, but on any given morning or evening, you’ll see groups who gathered for tai chi, Zumba, aerobics (between 5 and 6 p.m.), and even break dancing. These activities are typically free to join.
  • Rent a Boat: Ever wanted to ride along with your significant other in a tacky, giant swan? Here’s your chance! Row boats are also an option.
  • Meet People: Many varied interests bring groups together in Lumpini Park. You can take advantage of an opportunity to meet locals and participate . You’ll see clusters of people from local bird-watching clubs, photography clubs, and even Pokemon hunters. Students may shyly approach you to practice English.
  • Enjoy the Music: During the dry season (winter months) , the orchestra plays free shows on weekend evenings. At other times, you’ll catch different types of music and even karaoke. All are typically free to enjoy. Participate in park karaoke sessions at your own peril.

Other Nearby Options

Erawan Shrine, Bangkok’s famous sidewalk shrine , is just a 15-minute walk north on Ratchadamri Road, the main road that forms the western park boundary.

Lumpini Park is encircled by numerous cafes and places to eat if you don’t wish to sample the food stalls. MBK and Terminal 21, two large shopping malls with food courts and abundant shopping, are an interesting 30-minute walk away. Going by MRT requires about the same amount of time.

Also near Lumpini Park, you'll find health spas, a Geological Museum (due east from the park), and even a snake farm (on Rama IV Road). The Bangkok "CityCity" Gallery is a 10-minute walk south of the park.

Lumpini Park Bangkok: Our insider’s guide

Lumpini Park Bangkok Skyline

Missing Lumpini Park in Bangkok would be like going to New York and skipping Central Park

One of our favorite attractions in Bangkok is Lumpini Park, a beautiful green space right smack in the middle of the city. We recommend Lumpini to almost anyone who visits Bangkok, even if you only have a day. Coming to Bangkok and skipping this park would be like going to New York and missing Central Park. That’s actually a good comparison because Lumpini is somewhat reminiscent of Central Park. Both are large green spaces surrounded by skyscrapers, and both are beloved by locals and tourists alike. There is one major difference though… Lumpini Park has dragons. Seriously

Keep reading to find out about the dragons, plus everything you need to know to visit, the top things to not miss in the park, and a few rules that you should pay attention to.

The park is named after the Lumbini, the town in Nepal where Siddhartha Gautama was born before he became The Buddha. The area was designated as a park from land belonging to the Thai Monarchy in the 1920s by King Rama VI. During WWII it became a Japanese Army camp, and in the 21st Century, it’s often used as a camp by protesters during the occasional political flareups that Thailand is infamous for. The park is Bangkok’s biggest at 57.6 hectares or 142 acres. Lumpini Park has no entrance fee and is completely free to visit.

How to get there

Pro tip: If you have the budget for some swanky digs, the So/ Bangkok is one of the city’s best hotels, and its views over Lumpini Park are absolutely unbeatable. It’s also in a great location for exploring the city.

Lumpini Park is located pretty centrally in Bangkok and there’s a good chance your hotel is not far away. Take a quick look at the park on Google Maps and first check if it’s within walking distance. If not and you are staying near a train line, the park is next to both the Lumpini and Silom stations of the MRT underground train line, and the Sala Daeng BTS Skytrain station. Because of Bangkok’s notorious traffic, if you’re staying near a train line, that will be your best bet, otherwise, take a taxi or a tuk-tuk. The Thai name of this park is pronounced soo-ahn loom-pee-nee and it’s written สวนลุมพินี.

Lumpini Park fitness

Lumpini Park activities

The absolute best part of Lumpini Park is seeing the views of the surrounding skyline through the trees and over the lake. Even if you only have half an hour, you can dip into the park for a quick stroll to see this. There are a lot of nice vantage points you can find, but most of the best ones are around the lake in the northwest part of the park. The island in that lake is especially worth visiting. If you have the time though, you should definitely take out a boat to really find the best wide-open views.

Swan Boats in Lumpini Park

It’s cheezy, it’s corny, and it’s a lot of fun. Going out on the boats is one of our favorite activities in Lumpini Park. There are two locations at either end of the lake and both have the same prices. Lumpini Park boat rental costs just 40 Baht for 30 minutes. You have to pay in advance and leave a 40 Baht deposit which you’ll get back if you return on time, but most likely you’ll want to stay out longer. At 80 Baht for an hour, it’s still very cheap.

Lumpini Park monitor lizard

Lumpini Park’s monitor lizards

Alright, they’re not actually dragons, but Lumpini Park is absolutely full of huge water monitor lizards. These creatures are related to Komodo dragons and while they’re not quite as big, then can still grow heavier than an average adult, and longer from nose to tail than a person is tall. It’s actually possible to completely miss them — I’ve asked people who recently visited the park what they thought about the huge lizards, and they looked at me like I was a crazy person. But the monitor lizards really are all over the place, and if you keep an eye out you will see them.

If you take out a swan boat they’ll be hard to miss. You can find them swimming in the lake, and in the grass near the water’s edge. There are even some hanging out way up in the trees. If you walk around the park’s main lake and keep your eyes peeled, you will absolutely see the famous Lumpini Park monitor lizards.

The monitor lizards are pretty used to humans and mostly ignore you. I’ve never heard about anyone being attacked, but I wouldn’t get too close to them either. They are quick when they want to be, and I bet they can swing those tails hard enough to do some damage. I definitely wouldn’t want to get bitten by one either.

Lumpini Park has some of the best people-watching in Bangkok. As the city’s biggest park, Lumpini is an important place for locals to come to meet, relax, decompress, play, and exercise. If you come early in the morning, there is a strong senior citizen tai chi scene. There are also plenty of people getting in their cardio before the heat of the day sets in.

During the later morning and afternoon, it’s usually pretty hot in the park but there’s still plenty going on. Some people do come in on their lunch breaks. There are also a lot of different pavilions and gazebos throughout the park that draw different crowds. You can usually find older folks chilling in the gazebos playing Chinese checkers. I don’t know why but it always makes me happy seeing old people spending time outdoors with their friends.

The evening is when the park comes most alive. There are aerobics classes, dance groups, karaoke, bird watchers, courting couples, and people just trying to escape the intense urban grind of Bangkok. It’s really worth spending some time walking around and seeing all the different ways local people use their park.

Of course, you can join in with the workouts too. The main path around the park is about two and a half kilometers, so two laps is a 5k. There is a good calisthenics workout area in the southeast of Lumpini Park, there are basketball courts near the kids’ playground in the north-central area, and there are some random outdoor bodyweight exercise machines scattered throughout the park. There is also an outdoor gym with usable but dated free weights in the south-central area.

Watch Sepak Thakraw

If you’ve never heard of sepak thakraw, you’re really missing out. This is a sport that’s popular around Southeast Asia that’s pretty amazing to watch, and Lumpini Park is one of the best places to see it. Thakraw is played over a badminton net between two teams of three players each, using a small ball made of woven bamboo, rattan, or these days, usually plastic. It’s basically volleyball — get it over the net in three hits or less — with football rules — use any body part except your arms and hands. Once you see how hard they can bicycle-kick-spike that ball over that net, you’ll get it.

Feeding the fish and turtles

Thais believe you earn merit through good deeds like feeding the fish and turtles that live in the ponds and lakes of Lumpini Park. You can buy fish food near most of the park entrances, and at a few places near the water inside the park. In some areas, it almost seems like there are more fish than water when you throw in a handful of food.

Other wildlife

If you move slowly and keep your eyes out, you’ll see that the park is actually full of wildlife. Besides the huge dragons, fish, and turtles, there are also a lot of beautiful birds in the park and sometimes you’ll see local birdwatchers with the full getups out photographing them. There are also a lot of very cool cats that call this park home.

What to eat

There are food carts throughout the park with lots of local snacks that you can try. There isn’t really any single quintessential park food, like a New York hot dog in Central Park, so just get whatever looks good. For a bigger meal, Nai Meng Noodle restaurant is a short walk down Silom Road from the park and it serves excellent Thai-Chinese noodle and rice dishes at a good price. This is the location on Google Maps .

At that time, the area where the park stands today was nothing more than a neglected piece of land covered in scrub and marshes.

In 1925, King Rama VI decided to transform this neglected area into a public park for the people of Bangkok. The park was named “Lumpini” after the birthplace of Lord Buddha in Nepal, symbolizing a place of peace and tranquility. King Rama VI believed that creating green spaces within the rapidly growing city was essential for the well-being of the city’s residents.

The park’s development began under the supervision of the Bangkok Municipality, and its design was inspired by European-style parks. Lumpini Park officially opened its gates to the public on December 2, 1925, becoming Thailand’s first public park. It quickly became a popular destination for both locals and visitors, offering a serene escape from the bustling city.

5 stars 4 stars 3 stars 2 stars 1 star 0.00/5 - (0 Votes) Armeen Local tour guide "Make sure to visit Lumpini Park early in the morning when the locals do their tai chi and yoga; it's a serene experience you won't get at any other time of day. Also, check out the park's free outdoor gyms – they are rarely crowded in the late afternoon and it's a perfect chance to mingle with the locals while staying fit."

What is Lumpini Park?

Lumpini Park is the green lung in the heart of Bangkok, Thailand – a serene escape from the city's bustle with shades of green and spaces for rest and play. Picture yourself here, amidst the tall trees and large artificial lake, where skyscrapers line the horizon, juxtaposing urbanity with nature. It's an oasis for relaxation and activities, beloved by locals and visitors alike.

Upon stepping into Lumpini Park, the urban cacophony seems to fade away, replaced by the peaceful ambiance of nature and leisure. The park sprawls over 500,000 square meters, offering a haven for people to jog, socialize, and engage in various outdoor activities. Throughout the year, you might stumble upon a variety of free concerts and events, adding to the park's vibrant cultural fabric.

History of Lumpini Park

Lumpini Park has a historical legacy that traces back to the 1920s. It was created on royal property by King Rama VI, who named it after Lumbini, the birthplace of the Buddha in Nepal. The intention was to offer a public park for Bangkok's residents as urban areas began expanding, providing an environment for rest and recreation amid the growing cityscape.

Originally, Lumpini Park was designed to exhibit Thai craftsmanship and flora with the intent of being an exhibition ground for Thai crafts and flowers. Over the years, it adapted to the changing needs of the city's population. During World War II, for example, it was even temporarily transformed into a Japanese army camp. Today, several statues and pavilions contribute to the park's rich historic aura.

Why is Lumpini Park Important?

Think of Lumpini Park as an open-air sanctuary critical for the ecological and social health of Bangkok. It provides much-needed green space in a dense city, aiding in reducing pollution and maintaining ecological balance. For residents, it's a cherished venue for health and fitness, cultural gatherings, and it acts as a communal living room for those living in tight urban confines.

The park's importance goes beyond environmental benefits; it's a melting pot of Bangkok's diverse society. You'll see people from all walks of life: office workers, students, families, and retirees. Their shared activities build a strong sense of community. Moreover, the park plays host to several significant events throughout the year, reinforcing its role as a cultural hub.

Things to Do & See at Lumpini Park

In Lumpini Park, your options for leisure and discovery are as varied as the people who frequent it. Mornings might see Tai Chi practitioners moving in quiet synchronization, while the evenings often feature aerobic classes with lively music. Visitors could rent boats to row on the lake or unwind on a picnic blanket with the panoramic view of the city's skyline.

Lastly, don't miss the chance to sample local street food from various vendors at the park's entrances.

Whether it's exercising on the outdoor gym equipment, joining a game of sepak takraw (a local sport), or participating in free yoga sessions, Lumpini Park offers something for everyone. My name is Patrick, I'm originally from Sydney (Australia) but grew up in England (my second home) - and I love exploring cities (and writing about it!)

I work online in marketing, which gives me the opportunity to travel around the world full time.

So while I am away, I keep this blog updated with full travel info. I tend to stay in a city for a few months at a time, to really get to know it - then I write guides on it.

(+1) 3333.1111--> <--, [email protected], lumpini park and the monitor lizards.

Lumpini Park is often called "Bangkok's Central Park" - just, you know, with big scary looking Monitor Lizards! Read on to find out about what you can get up to in Lumpini Park, and how to get to Lumpini Park. And of course, important information to know about those scary looking reptiles!

It is one of my favourite places to go in Bangkok when I need to unwind. The park is huge and you can get away from the hectic streets (mostly, anyway!) and get some form of peace and quiet.

Lumpini Park

Lumpini Park

If you are ever in Bangkok and feel that you need to get away from the busy streets and relax, then I recommend you head over to Lumpini Park.

For me, the highlight is always seeing the monitor lizards (more on those later!). They look dangerous, but as far as I am aware they never attack humans. As someone who lives in Europe, seeing animals like this in the wild (if you can call the park 'the wild') is quite fascinating.

Lumpini Park Grass Walk

Lumpini Park Grass Walk

It is large - covering an area of 142 acres (58-hectare), and you can probably spend an hour or more walking around and not get bored. I think on my first visit there, I spent almost two hours walking around and seeing the sights.

Lumpini Park Reptiles

Where is Lumpini Park?

Are the Lumpini Park Monitor Lizards safe?

  • Where are the reptiles?

Lumpini Park close to central Bangkok. When you are near it you will easily be able to spot it (especially if you are approaching from the side with the memorial statue of King Rama VI (see photo below).

It accessible by the Sala Daeng BTS station (leave the station via Exit No.6, and cross the street towards the King Rama VI statue), Lumpini MRT station (which is on the south-east corner of the park) and Silom MRT station (south side of the park).

Even with language issues, every single taxi or Tuk-tuk driver will know Lumpini Park.

Lumpini Park Shrine

  • Opens every day at 4:30am
  • Closes every day at 9pm

On weekdays the park will be busiest from around 4pm-7pm. On Saturdays, it is busy from around 8am onwards until it shuts. Sunday mornings are really busy, but it dies down as the day goes on. While there are many tourists that visit, I would say it is primarily used by the locals.

Lumpini Park Sign - Floating Island And Playground

What can you see and do at Lumpini Park?

Walk around.

Walk around! You can spend a long time having a nice walk around the park. I think that if you do a whole loop of the park you will probably walk around 2.5 to 3km (1.5 miles - 1.8 miles). But you will probably get distracted along the way and take some detours. It isn't a place where you need to particularly worry about what route you take, you can't really get lost in Lumpini Park.

Lumpini Park Lake

Go for a run in Lumpini park

Or if you are feeling more active go for a run around the park . The park is always full of many runners and joggers. The park is almost completely flat, and it is a great place to get some exercise.

Rent paddle boats in the artificial lake in the park

You can also rent a swan paddle boat for just 40 baht.

See the fish

Look closely into the lake and you can guarantee that you'll spot some fish. Some of them are impressively huge too!

Take note of the grass

This one isn't too exciting or anything, but the grass is just weird here.

See the mascot guys

See people exercise - or even join in a class yourself!

Lumpini Park Tai Chi Club

Watch people (or join in) doing Tai Chi, yoga and other exercises

Lumpini Park Tai Chi Club

You could also join in (but check first, don't just turn up). There always seems to be a few westerners joining in some group activity in the park.

Get some food : There are multiple little stalls/mini cafes dotted around Lumpini Park where you can get some snacks. They are popular with locals.

See some cats! There always seems to be a few cats along the way that are quite friendly and you can play with.

Lumpini Park - Always Full Of Cats

They seem to like the attention of humans and are quite chilled out even if they're sat in the middle of where bikers want to go.

Or see some birds in the park

Birds love Lumpini Park. There are many different breeds (sorry for the lack of info here - I'm no bird expert), it can be nice to sit and watch them.

Lumpini Park Bird Breeds

But if cats and birds aren't interesting for you, then what about the tortoises?

There are also the famous monitor lizards (more on those later) but you can also spot quite a few tortoises hanging out in the park near the water.

Lumpini Park tortoises

Workout in the free outdoor gym in the park

Lumpini Park Free Outdoor Gym

Use the free outdoor gym . I've seen it referred to online as Bangkok's Ghetto Gym. It has been a part of the park since 1979 and is one of the most basic gyms you'll ever see (it looks like what you see in prison movies). Everything stays out, 24/7, in all weather conditions. But as it is all made of metal everything lasts ok. It is completely free to use this gym, but if you want to work out in a proper gym then there is actually an indoor gym within the park (which is almost as cheap as free: as low as 50 Baht for foreigners).

And don't forget about the scary looking monitor lizards

And of course, check out the famous monitor lizards and other wildlife in Lumpini Park.

Lumpini Park Monitor Lizards?!?

As I said above, the highlight for me is the fact that the park has Monitor Lizards .

Lumpini Park

These are up to 3m (10ft) in length and when you first see them they honestly look quite scary and like they could do some damage. They look like prehistoric crocodiles (maybe a little bit smaller?). But it turns out they're actually no threat to humans.

There are around 400 water monitor lizards in the park (although they tend to stick in a small area). You will definitely be able to find some in the park!

Lumpini Park Monitor Lizards

In September 2016 100 were removed to keep the population numbers down. They can cause quite a bit of damage to the park, so they aren't encouraged to grow to big numbers. You won't find them very far away from the lake in the park, and never outside of the park.

They survive by mostly eating dead fish, birds and turtles. (Not humans!)

Lumpini Park - Monitor Lizard

  • Yes, they are safe!
  • They might look like small crocodiles, but as mentioned above they eat dead fish, birds and turtles!
  • I've been close to them (not stupidly close, but maybe a meter or two away) and they don't seem to care. I would definitely not want to touch or provoke them though.

They don't attack humans and are safe to be around. But you should still keep a safe distance from them!

Lumpini Park - 2 Monitor Lizards (one Hidden)

Where are the reptiles in Lumpini Park?

If you stick to the lakes it won't be long until you see them! But see the map below (the red area indicates where you can definitely find some!)

Once you find one, you will probably see a few more in the vicinity. They don't move, and they do half blend into the background. There have been a few times where I was by the side of the lake looking one way, then I suddenly realised I was less than a meter away from one. But they just sit there, motionless, and I've never seen them try to attack anyone. People walk their dogs in the park quite safely too.

Lumpini Park - 2 Monitor Lizards (one Hidden)

In the photo above there are actually two of them. It might not be a fantastic pic, but maybe this will show how it is easy to miss them if you are distracted by something else.
