Rory McIlroy less confident PGA Tour, LIV near merger
Rory McIlroy explains why Jimmy Dunne's departure from the PGA Tour's policy board is such a big loss. (1:09)

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Rory McIlroy called Jimmy Dunne's departure from the PGA Tour's policy board a "huge loss," and the four-time major champion said his confidence in the tour getting a deal done with Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund to reunite men's professional golf is as low as ever.
Dunne, one of the architects of the framework agreement the PGA Tour signed with the PIF on June 6, resigned from the board Monday. In his resignation letter, the Wall Street dealmaker said his vote and role had become "superfluous" because player directors outnumbered independent directors on the board.
Tiger Woods was added as a sixth player director to the board in August. There were five independent directors, including Dunne.
"Yeah, honestly I think it's a huge loss for the PGA Tour, if they are trying to get this deal done with the PIF and trying to unify the game," McIlroy said Wednesday at Valhalla Golf Club, the site of this week's PGA Championship.
"Jimmy was basically the relationship, the sort of conduit between the PGA Tour and PIF. It's been really unfortunate that he has not been involved for the last few months, and I think part of the reason that everything is stalling at the minute is because of that."
In Dunne's resignation letter, he wrote that "no meaningful progress has been made towards a transaction with PIF." Dunne said he hadn't been involved in talks with PIF governor Yasir Al-Rumayyan and others since June.
The PIF is financing the rival LIV Golf League.
"It's really, really disappointing, and you know, I think the tour is in a worse place because of it," McIlroy said. "We'll see. We'll see where it goes from here, and we'll see what happens. But you know, I would say my confidence level on something getting done before last week was, you know, as low as it had been. And then with this news of Jimmy resigning and knowing the relationship he has with the other side, and how much warmth there is from the other side, it's concerning."
Last week, McIlroy was named to a newly formed transactional committee that will handle negotiations with the Saudis. McIlroy had hoped to return to the policy board -- player director Webb Simpson had offered to step down to allow him back on -- but other directors were "uncomfortable" with bringing him back.
Woods, who is also on the transaction committee, said the tour had made some progress in negotiations with the PIF.
"It's ongoing, it's fluid," Woods said. "It changes day to day. Has there been progress? Yes, but it's an ongoing negotiation, so a lot of work ahead for all of us with this process. And so, we're making steps, and it may not be giant steps, but we're making steps."
McIlroy, the No. 2-ranked golfer in the world, didn't address his pending divorce from his wife of seven years, the former Erica Stoll, during a 12-minute news conference. McIlroy filed for divorce Monday, according to court documents in family court in Palm Beach County, Florida.
McIlroy's attorneys wrote that the marriage is irretrievably broken. They asked for shared parental custody of their daughter and for a judge to enforce a prenuptial agreement the couple signed March 7, 2017.
When McIlroy was asked how he was doing on Wednesday, he replied, "I'm ready to play this week."
McIlroy, 35, will try to end a nearly 10-year drought in major championships. He won his fourth one at the 2014 PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club -- and has gone 0-for-35 since.
McIlroy has won in each of his past two starts, finishing first with good friend Shane Lowry at the Zurich Classic team event in New Orleans on April 28, then capturing the Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow Club with a 5-stroke victory Sunday.
"Sometimes I struggle to remember what I did yesterday," McIlroy said. "I think if I look that far back, I mean, it's hard to rekindle those feelings and those memories. I can vaguely remember, you know, coming here off the back of winning The Open and the old [World Golf Championship-Bridgestone Invitational].
"But you know, I think it's all about confidence and momentum, and I have a lot of confidence and quite a bit of momentum coming into this week. So as I said at the start, it's just about trying to keep that going."

Two-time PGA Tour winner Grayson Murray died Saturday morning at age 30, one day after he withdrew from the Charles Schwab Cup Challenge at Colonial.
There were no immediate details on the circumstances of his death, only shock and grief from the PGA Tour and his management team.
“I am at a loss for words,” PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan said. “The PGA Tour is a family, and when you lose a member of your family, you are never the same. We mourn Grayson and pray for comfort for his loved ones.”
His management company, GSE Worldwide, confirmed the death and said it was heartbroken.
“We will hold off on commenting until we learn further details, but our heart aches for his family, his friends and all who loved him during this very difficult time,” GSE said in a statement.
Monahan said he spoke with Murray’s parents to offer condolences, and they asked that the tournament in Fort Worth, Texas, continue.
He said grief counselors would be on site at the PGA Tour and Korn Ferry Tour event in Knoxville, Tennessee. Monahan headed to Texas and later appeared on CBS as the third round was ending.
“To see the devastation on the faces of every player coming in is really difficult to see and really just profound,” Monahan said. “Grayson was a remarkable player, but he was a very courageous man. I’ve always loved that about him.”
Murray, who had dealt with alcohol and mental health issues in the past, made a massive turnaround this year and won the Sony Open , hitting wedge to 3 feet for birdie on the final hole to get into a playoff and winning it with a 40-foot putt.
He also won the Barbasol Championship in 2017.
“It was a huge shock. My heart sank,” said Webb Simpson, who learned of Murray’s death shortly before teeing off at Colonial. He said Murray was the first winner of his junior tournament and they shared the same swing coach as juniors.
“I just hate it so much,” Simpson said. “I’m going to miss him. I’m thankful he was in the place with his faith before this morning happened.”
Murray was No. 58 in the world rankings coming off a tie for 43rd in the PGA Championship last week at Valhalla. He also made the cut in his Masters debut, finishing 51st, and was in the field for the U.S. Open next month at Pinehurst No. 2.
Murray, who grew up in North Carolina, was among the most talented juniors in the country. He won the prestigious Junior World Championship in San Diego three straight years and earned the Arnold Palmer Scholarship at Wake Forest.
He wound up going to three colleges, lastly at Arizona State, and won as a 22-year-old PGA Tour rookie at the Barbasol Championship.
Murray said in January that he had been sober for eight months, was engaged to be married, had become a Christian and felt his best golf was ahead of him. He was appointed to the 16-member Player Advisory Council.
“My story is not finished. I think it’s just beginning,” Murray said in Hawaii. “I hope I can inspire a lot of people going forward that have their own issues.”
Murray said he used to drink during tournament weeks as a rookie because he knew he had talent and felt he was invincible. He also brought attention to himself through social media, openly criticizing other players and getting into one social media spat with Kevin Na over Na’s reputation as a slow player.
But he felt like he turned the corner when he sought help — letting others fight for him, is how he explained it this year.
“It took me a long time to get to this point,” Murray said in January. “That was seven years ago, over seven years ago. I’m a different man now. I would not be in this position right now today if I didn’t put that drink down eight months ago.”
Peter Malnati played with Murray at Colonial. He offered to go on the CBS telecast Saturday afternoon and immediately broke down trying to talk about him.
“It’s a huge loss for all of us on the PGA Tour,” Malnati said. “As much as we want to beat each other, we’re one big family, and we lost one today. It’s terrible.”
This story has been corrected to show that Murray won the Barbasol Championship in 2017, not last year.

PGA Tour player Grayson Murray has died, according to a statement issued by commissioner Jay Monahan Saturday afternoon.
Murray, 30, was competing in the Charles Schwab Challenge in Fort Worth, Texas and withdrew with two holes to play Friday during the second round. No cause of death has been reported so far.
The tournament is continuing Saturday, per the wishes of Murray's family, Monahan said.
Murray was ranked 58th in the world and finished tied for 43rd at last week’s PGA Championship. He played in his first Masters earlier this year, finishing 51st, after winning the Sony Open in Hawai'i in January—his second PGA Tour title.
Earlier this year, Murray spoke of recovering from alcohol abuse.
“My story is not finished,” he said after his victory in a playoff in Hawai’i. “I think it's just the beginning. I hope I can inspire a lot of people going forward that have their own issues.”
Murray was slated to be a part of the field for the U.S. Open next month at Pinehurst No. 2.
“We were devastated to learn—and are heartbroken to share—that PGA Tour player Grayson Murray passed away this morning,” Monahan said. “I am at a loss for words.
“I reached out to Grayson’s parents to offer our deepest condolences, and during that conversation, they asked that we continue with tournament play. They were adamant that Grayson would want us to do so. As difficult as it will be, we want to respect their wishes.”

The cause of death was not disclosed. Murray withdrew from the second round of the Charles Schwab Challenge on Friday, citing an illness. He was 5 over par with the final two holes remaining in the round at Colonial in Fort Worth.
A North Carolina native, Murray grew into a standout golfer in his youth, becoming the second-youngest player to make the cut on the Korn Ferry Tour at 16 and playing as an amateur in the U.S. Open at 19. After attending Wake Forest, East Carolina and Arizona State, he earned full status on the PGA Tour for the 2016-17 season. He won the 2017 Barbasol Championship, earning his first victory on tour at 23.
Murray struggled in subsequent seasons and publicly discussed his battles with alcoholism and mental health. He said he received treatment for addiction and worked to return to form.
He twice won on the Korn Ferry Tour last year and reclaimed his PGA Tour card that fall. In January, he won the Sony Open in Hawaii. That win elevated him to a career-high 46th in the Official World Golf Ranking. Murray ranked No. 58 at the time of his death.

PGA Tour star, former Arizona State golfer Grayson Murray dead at 30
FORT WORTH, Texas — Grayson Murray, a two-time PGA Tour winner who battled alcohol issues and depression, has died, according to PGA Tour officials. No cause of death has been listed, but PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan issued a statement to staff and players stating that grief counselors would be on hand but the tournament would continue as scheduled. Murray played at Arizona State University.
Murray played the first round and part of the second round in this week's Charles Schwab Challenge, but withdrew from the event after 16 holes.

He attended Wake Forest University, East Carolina University, and Arizona State University, and later won the 2017 Barbasol Championship and the 2024 Sony Open in Hawaii.
"We were devastated to learn -- and are heartbroken to share -- that PGA Tour player Grayson Murray passed away this morning," Monahan said in his note. "I am at a loss for words. The PGA Tour is a family, and when you lose a member of your family, you are never the same. We mourn Grayson and pray for comfort for his loved ones. I reached out to Grayson's parents to offer our deepest condolences, and during that conversation, they asked that we continue with tournament play. They were adamant that Grayson would want us to do so.
"As difficult as it will be, we want to respect their wishes. The PGA Tour has grief counselors available at both tournament sites, as well as virtually for those not in the field. I am en route to Ft. Worth and will share more information when we can."
Excelling from an early age
After capturing three straight IMG Junior World titles starting in 2006, he became the second youngest player to make the cut at a Korn Ferry Tour event when he did so at the age of 16. He also played in the 2013 U.S. Open at Merion as an amateur.
Murray showed great promise on the course, winning the 2017 Barbasol despite drinking during tournament week and admitting in January that he played three days hungover when he won.
“Best thing and worst thing that ever happened to me was winning my rookie year,” he said. “I think the alcohol brought a side out of me that wasn’t me. It was kind of the monster in me in a way.”

But the early success proved to be short-lived. He struggled to make cuts and conceded he was jealous of the players he grew up competing against, who were having greater success. Along the way, he had a Twitter spat with a fellow player, suffered a scooter accident in 2022 in Bermuda , and threatened to quit on multiple occasions. Murray also dealt with anxiety and depression, and said there were days he didn’t want to get out of bed.
“I just thought I was a failure,” he said. “I thought I had a lot of talent that was just a waste of talent.”
Turning things around through sobriety
It appeared his life turned around, however, as Murray had gotten sober in 2023.
“It was by choice,” he said. “It was time.”
He regained exempt status on the PGA Tour after winning twice on the Korn Ferry Tour last year and set out to treat his return to the big leagues as a new beginning.
A native of Raleigh, North Carolina, Murray said he was treating the 2024 season as if it was his rookie year all over again.
“I was young and thought I was invincible. Wasn’t doing the correct stuff off the course to really give myself the best chance to succeed out here,” he said. “My scooter accident in Bermuda was really a low point in my life. You know, I’ve obviously been vocal about the alcohol use in the past. I’m over eight months sober now. I have a beautiful fiancée that I love so much and who is so supportive of me, and my parents are so supportive of me.”
Murray had made waves via social media in 2021 when he revealed his struggles with Tour life that he said had led him to become an alcoholic. Murray claimed he was on probation with the PGA Tour after he got drunk in a Hawaii hotel bar despite causing “no scene whatsoever.” He also expressed disappointment that the Tour didn’t help him deal with his alcohol problem.
PGA Tour player Grayson Murray dies at 30 day after WD from Colonial
PGA Tour player Grayson Murray is dead at age 30.
The tour announced his death in an email on Saturday with statements from commissioner Jay Monahan.
“We were devastated to learn—and are heartbroken to share—that PGA Tour player Grayson Murray passed away this morning. I am at a loss for words,” Monahan wrote. “The PGA Tour is a family, and when you lose a member of your family, you are never the same. We mourn Grayson and pray for comfort for his loved ones.
“I reached out to Grayson’s parents to offer our deepest condolences, and during that conversation, they asked that we continue with tournament play. They were adamant that Grayson would want us to do so. As difficult as it will be, we want to respect their wishes.”
No details have been provided about the nature of Murray’s death. He was in Fort Worth this week playing in the Schwab Challenge. Murray shot 68 at Colonial Country Club in the first round, but in the second, he made was two over when he made three straight bogeys at holes 14-16 and withdrew with two holes remaining, citing illness.
Murray had battled alcohol addiction and depression for years, but also experienced what looked like a career resurgence when he won twice in 2023 on the Korn Ferry Tour to re-earn his PGA Tour card, and then won the Sony Open in Hawaii in January. It was his second career victory and first in seven years.
Immediately after the win, an emotional Murray said, "It's not easy. I wanted to give up a lot of times. Give up on myself. Give up on the game of golf. Give up on life, at times."
He also praised his fiancee, Christiana Ritchie, and Jesus and said, "When you get tired of fighting, let someone else fight for you. ... I hope everyone at home watching can get a little inspiration from it. If I can just help one person, that's all it takes ... I knew today was not going to change my life, but it did change my career, and I'm excited."
Social media reaction from players began showing up soon after the news broke.
On Saturday, Murray's caddie, Jay Green, told Golf Channel, "Grayson was the absolute best. Not only was he an incredible, thoughtful and generous boss, he has an even better friend. He truly would do anything for anyone."
As a youth, Murray won three consecutive Junior World championships and was the top-ranked player in his age group. The Raliegh, N.C., native captured a state title in high school and then played for three different universities—Wake Forest, East Carolina and Arizona State. Murray earned conditional status through Q School on the then-Web.com Tour in 2016., and he not only reached the PGA Tour the next year, he won his first title at the Barbasol Championship.
But there were also dark times ahead for Murray. He frequently battled commentors on X (then Twitter), and in July 2021, he said on social media that his elderly aunt and uncle were killed in their North Carolina home. Those deaths came on the heels of the recent passing of Murray's grandmother.
Following a second-round WD at the 3M Open that same month, Murray took to Twitter to talk about his battles with drinking and said he was on probation by the PGA Tour for an incident in a hotel bar in Hawaii. He went on to write that he is an alcoholic and playing the PGA Tour has been “awful” for him, while claiming the tour had ignored his pleas for help. In response, the PGA Tour released a statement: “We can unequivocally say that the PGA Tour is a family, and when a member of that family needs help, we are there for him. That has been the case here and will continue to be.”
Speaking to reporters on Saturday at Colonial, Monahan said he reached out to Murray soon after those comments, and that over a period of time they had meaningful discussons about mental health.
"I spent a lot of time with him because I wanted to understand what we could do, in his estimation, in his opinion, to help everybody else out here,” Monahan said.
“I’m devastated by Grayson’s loss … the conversations I had with him, particularly the last year, I learned an awful lot from him. He was very open and transparent with me.”
In August 2021, Murray revealed on social media that he was in treatment for alcohol abuse . “I still have a long ways to go and have made a promise to myself that I wouldn’t leave until I was 100% ready for the real world again,” he wrote.
More than a year later, in October 2022, Murray was in a serious scooter crash while competing in Bermuda and suffered injuries to his face, hands and knee.
After his win this year in Hawaii, Murray said he had been sober for eight months, and he spoke of the anxiety and depression that contributed to his drinking.
“I struggle with comparing myself to others, self-esteem,” Murray said. "I think they're common issues that we all endure. I got tired of trying to fight it alone, and I asked for help one day, and that's when my life changed.”
