Rookie Taylor Montgomery is one of the hottest players on the PGA Tour, and he's got wild tales about getting here

1456470425

Taylor Montgomery, shown hitting a shot in the Sony Open, has posted eight top-15 finishes in nine starts this season.

A dozen events into the 2022-23 PGA Tour season, the rightful focus is on Jon Rahm and his incredible play as the World No. 3 heads into this week’s Farmers Insurance Open with a chance to win a third straight tour start.

Hidden in that hoopla, though, is the impressive performance of another player, tour rookie Taylor Montgomery. In nine starts, the Korn Ferry Tour graduate has had four top-10 finishes and eight top-15s. Not bad for a golfer who struggled to make the starting lineup after enrolling at UNLV in 2013 because he could not keep his ball within the boundaries of a golf course. Literally.

“There’s nobody in the world as bad a driver as I was,” Montgomery says now with a chuckle.

The 27-year-old recalls just how flabbergasted Phil Rowe, then an assistant for the Rebels, was when he analyzed the number of strokes the Las Vegas native was losing each round simply to penalty shots. “Here I am in college, with an up-and-down rate of about 90 percent playing our home course,” Montgomery said, “and yet I’m shooting in the 80s.”

It was absolutely maddening to Montgomery, considering he was simultaneously a whiz with the putter. Numerous clubs were snapped in anger as he obsessed on fixing the problem, aware that knowledgeable golf people were wincing as they watched him hit balls—and telling him he didn’t have the stuff to play on the PGA Tour.

“You hear things like that … nothing fires me up more than that kind of stuff,” Montgomery says.

While he’d like to have a few words with those naysayers, now, he doesn’t have to. If they’ve been watching PGA Tour’s telecasts this season, they know he’s got that driver and scoring stuff mostly figured out.

Montgomery once again found himself in the Sunday mix last week in The American Express at PGA West, where late in the back nine he had a putt to tie for the lead. He missed and then a cold shank into the water at the Stadium Course’s island-green 17th, resulting in an eventual double bogey, drowned his chances for his maiden win. But with a bounce-back birdie at 18 he finished solo fifth.

This week at Torrey Pines, Montgomery competes on courses with which he and his family have deep emotional connections. In 1994, a year before Taylor was born, his dad Monte—the longtime director of golf at Shadow Creek in Las Vegas—made his only PGA Tour start in this same San Diego event. After Monday qualifying to get into the field, he finished tied for 24th.

Taylor, meanwhile, competed in the Junior World at Torrey and played in his first major at the 2021 U.S. Open on the South Course, tying for 57th . Last year at the Farmers, in his one PGA Tour start other than the U.S. Open while playing fulltime on the Korn Ferry, Montgomery shot a 64 in the second round and birdied the last two holes on the final day for a T-11.

“I love Torrey Pines,” Montgomery said. “It’s a really big golf course, and there’s not a lot of out of bounds. There’s just thick rough and tiny fairways. You hit driver on every single hole, and I like that.”

MORE: Farmers Insurance Open DFS picks—Can we trust Jason Day?

Montgomery credits his Dallas-based instructor, Jon Sinclair, with turning his game around starting in his senior year in college. Big and strong at 6-foot-3, Montgomery was encouraged by his dad at an early age to swing as hard as he could. Monte was an excellent ball-striker in his day, and he figured the athletic Taylor, who also exceled in baseball and basketball, would have the same skill. But Taylor got in a terrible habit of flipping the clubface at impact, and it took years of work with Sinclair to fix that.

Before Montgomery found Sinclair, his prospects were so bad that he was basically the last bench-sitter on the team for then-head coach Dwaine Knight. He wasn’t close to playing in tournaments, and when Montgomery heard through a UNLV booster that the injury-riddled Rebels basketball team was looking for an athlete to fill out the roster, he strongly considered it. “I thought it would have been awesome,” he said. “I was playing terrible golf; I was playing basketball and staying in shape.”

But when he asked Knight, who oversaw the UNLV program for more than three decades, about it, the Hall of Fame coach had a curt answer: Choose basketball and you’re done with golf. Montgomery stuck around and by his senior season in 2017 was a starter who contributed to UNLV reaching the team match-play portion of the NCAA Championships.

1457750418

Taylor Montgomery ranks among the top 10 on the PGA Tour this season in strokes gained/putting.

Katelyn Mulcahy

Montgomery now believes he’s one of the “best drivers in the world,” and his tour stats suggest its more than hubris. While teeing it up plenty with 3-woods, he ranks 39th in driving distance (307.6 yards) and 41st in strokes gained/off-the-tee. It’s his iron play that still needs work, hitting only 68 percent of greens in regulation to rank 137th.

And yet, Montgomery knows he can rely on his prowess on the greens to him out. While new to the tour, he already ranks seventh in SG/putting.

It’s an interesting twist, considering Monte’s playing career was sabotaged by terrible putting—in part, he says, because he inherited the “shakes” from his father. Early on, dad emphasized the short game with Taylor, who spent hours on Shadow Creek’s slick practice greens. To this day, Monte says, “You won’t see Taylor just throw down three balls on the green and putt. He’s always practicing with a purpose.”

The work means more when there’s a reward, and Taylor found that out when he won the $75,000 first prize at the inaugural 2017 Major Series of Putting that was held in a “stadium” a block off the Las Vega strip. He and his UNLV teammate (and current fellow tour player) Kurt Kitayama pocketed another $15,000 in taking the team competition, and it was that cash that bankrolled Montgomery’s fledgling pro career.

Early in his rookie PGA Tour season, Montgomery has earned $1.8 million, more than enough to have secured his card for 2024. Yet you can bet he's checking the financial ledger each week. To hear both father and son, money and gambling have always been among the sport’s biggest lures for Taylor.

MORE: Our writer anxiously followed Taylor Montgomery at the U.S. Open after randomly betting on him

Monte likes to tell a story of the day he says his son, all of 11, decided he wanted to be a professional golfer. A Vegas high-roller was a regular at Shadow Creek and he challenged Monte and Taylor in a match against him and an assistant pro. The stakes were $50 a hole with carryovers.

1456457164

Taylor Montgomery has worked dilligently in recent years to erase a flip in his club that produced wild shots off his driver and irons.

“So, we have this 15-footer on the 18th hole to win 450 bucks a person,” Monte recalled. “I said, ‘Taylor, go up there and hit that putt,’ and he drains it! The guest walked over and gave him $900—at 11 years old! … One hundred percent, that day changed Taylor.”

Taylor laughs at the memory of that day, but insists the golf bug bit him in a more traditional way—while he caddied for his dad in a U.S. Open qualifier. But he will not deny that gambling on the course and having something to play for, whether it’s a $20 nassau or a million-dollar check, gets his competitive drive going.

“The gambling aspect in golf is why we’ve made it this far,” Taylor said. “If there was no gambling, I don’t think I would have played, because it’s always something really fun to do with friends. It wasn’t even about the money; I just loved the competition aspect to it. … I loved basketball, but it’s not like you’re going to play pickup games with 10 people and expect every guy to put in $5.”

MORE: The small rules change at the U.S. Open that Taylor Montgomery helped inspire

Perhaps Monte points to that one gambling win as Taylor’s turning point in golf because he experienced a fateful day himself. Married young to his high school sweetheart, Mikella, Monte followed her from their hometown of Grand Junction, Colo., to UNLV after honing his game at a junior college in Florida. Knight was early in his career in Vegas and when Monte asked for a scholarship, coach told him there were none. So Monte walked on to play in a team qualifier at the Desert Inn. He opened with 74-74 and needed to score at least even par in the final round to have any chance to make the team. He clutched up with a 68.

“That changed my life,” he said. “I look back and wonder what would have happened if I shot 73. You just don’t know. The next week, I’m hanging out with the UNLV team and playing Shadow Creek with [owner] Steve Wynn.”

Monte would eventually do some caddieing at Shadow Creek, and only a few years later, with the club in the midst of managerial changes, Wynn tabbed Montgomery as the director of golf. He’ll soon celebrate 30 years at the helm of a place he calls “the Disneyland of golf.”

Monte’s job allowed Taylor to regularly mix with famous actors and businessmen and athletes, of course, including Michael Jordan and Fred Couples. The lesson from those encounters he drilled into Taylor: “Look them in the eye, shake their hand and don’t be afraid of them."

Clearly, Taylor listened. You don't keep sharing leaderboards with the best in the world if you're playing scared.

What if every city had its own professional golf team? A definitive power ranking of U.S. golf hubs

Dylan Dethier

The PGA Tour’s U.S.-based pros have clustered together at an astonishing rate. Just five communities are home to  more than half  of the 228 Tour pros living stateside, leading to fascinating social dynamics when neighbors take on neighbors at events around the country.

So what if we took things to the next level? What if professional golf wasn’t comprised of individuals but region-based teams, and locals could root collectively for their pros-in-residence?

Here’s a look — scouting reports included — at the nation’s would-be top 11 teams, ranked from underdog to powerhouse.

Ground rules: Each player must have PGA Tour status and officially reside (based on Tour data) within 25 miles of his team’s city. Five players per team.

pga tour players from las vegas

California is the birthplace of 24 current Tour members (more than any other state) but is home to just 11 pros, and it’s not the bad weather that’s scaring people away. One major factor? The top state income tax in the country. Heck, we had to stretch our geographic rules just to put a full SoCal squad together.

TEAM IRVINE

35. Brendan Steele

131. Luke List

187. Aaron Wise

345. Cameron Tringale

1280. John Merrick

Avg. World Ranking: 395.6

Snubs: None, except geographically: Would-be team leaders Phil Mickelson and Xander Schauffele both live outside the required radius.

pga tour players from las vegas

10. AUGUSTA, GA. (5 pros in residence)

Bad news for this team: local pros aren’t given special invitations to the Masters.

31. Kevin Kisner

76. Wesley Bryan

135. Scott Brown

270 Vaughn Taylor

456. Matt Atkins

Avg. World Ranking: 193.6

Snubs: Augusta’s ringer-in-residence, (approx.) 200-time club champion Jeff Knox .

Scouting report: Vaughn Taylor is on the move — he was outside the top 300 entering this year! That’s about it for good news here.

9. HOUSTON, TEXAS: (6 pros in residence)

The biggest city on this list is an underdog nonetheless.

24. Patrick Reed

45. Jhonny Vegas

173. Chris Stroud

332. Michael Kim

367. Shawn Stefani

Avg. World Ranking: 188.2

Snubs: One particularly dark horse would be Jim Nantz, who played college golf at U of H and has been spending many nights practicing on his backyard par 3 .

Scouting report:  More like Who-ston, amiright? We don’t want to sell any team captained by Patrick Reed short, but Stroud, Kim, and Stefani will have their work cut out for them.

8. CHARLOTTE, N.C. (7 pros in residence)

The Queen City is a heck of a golf town that’s still searching for its alpha pro.

46. Webb Simpson

127. J. Kokrak

160. Harold Varner

169. Mackenzie Hughes

344. Seamus Power

Avg. World Ranking: 169.2

Snubs:  Carolina native and world No. 1,937 Steph Curry may be making a run for this team before long.

Scouting report: We like their chances at Quail Hollow. Besides that? Meh.

7. PONTE VEDRA BEACH, FLA.  (12 pros in residence)

Ponte Vedra is home to Tour headquarters, TPC Sawgrass, and a decent crop of pros. Several have settled there from abroad, like Russell Knox (Scotland) David Lingmerth (Sweden) or Vijay Singh (Fiji), favoring the quieter atmosphere to the bustle of nearby Jacksonville.

58. Cameron Smith

85. Russell Knox

75. Billy Horschel

149. David  Lingmerth

206. Sam Saunders

Average World Ranking:  114.6

Snubs:  We’ve set up this competition just a few years late for Vijay Singh, who still miraculously lives down the road from the organization he’s been  suing for years .

Scouting report:  An international medley that’s solid, if unspectacular, from top to bottom.

pga tour players from las vegas

No state income tax… Vegas, baby! This is an older crowd, but solid.

23. Charley Hoffman

70. Ryan Moore

95. Kevin Na

115. Scott Piercy

216. Alex Cejka

Avg. World Ranking: 103.8

Snubs:  Anthony Kim reportedly spends a fair amount of time in Vegas, and would certainly up the intrigue coming from this fivesome.

Scouting report: This is my underdog team. Stoic group of veterans with well-honed poker faces? Sign me up.

pga tour players from las vegas

3. Jordan Spieth

48. Si Woo Kim

91. Sung Kang

89. Bryson DeChambeau

138. Whee Kim

Average World Ranking: 73.8

Snubs: I’ll give you a hint:   He’s about to peg it in his first Tour event , and used to be the local team’s starting quarterback…

Scouting report: Two men from Texas and three more from South Korea comprise a streaky squad that could get hot at the right time. Si Woo Kim is the ultimate X-factor: if he brings the same game that got him a strong W at last year’s Players, you never know.

pga tour players from las vegas

Nineteen pros seems like a lot, but consider that in the pre-NetJets era, when Tour pros cared about commercial flights, Orlando was the hub for all things pro golf. Tiger lived there until 2011, fergodsakes! Now, the gated communities in the Disney burbs are home to a slightly aging but still talented demo.

12. Henrik Stenson

26. Gary Woodland

60. Ian Poulter

63. Charles Howell III

117. Bubba Watson

Avg. World Ranking: 55.6

Snubs:  If you haven’t seen the video evidence, Goofy is a hell of a player  and we hear he lives nearby.

Scouting report: An accomplished group, but getting grey! They’ve been on the scene since Orlando was cool. With Woodland getting hot at the right time, can the rest of the group play like it’s 2013?

pga tour players from las vegas

The Sea Island crowd is headlined by a low-key group of American Tour vets. These island lifers don’t seem so different from the Ponte Vedra Beach crew, who live comparable lifestyles just 100 miles south.

18. Matt Kuchar

21. Brian Harman

55. Zach Johnson

56. Patton Kizzire

99. Hudson Swafford

Avg. World Ranking:  49.8

Snubs:  Davis Love is the mayor around these parts and would be a reliable fill-in.

Scouting Report: Crafty, under-the radar bunch. Does anyone get less credit than the top three members of the Sea Island team?

pga tour players from las vegas

An unofficial entrant, just inserted to point out the ridiculous depth of the Jupiter crew.

16. Alex Noren

32. Daniel Berger

39. Patrick Cantlay

59. Peter Uihlein

64. Keegan Bradley

Avg. World Ranking:  42

Snubs:  Uhh, Tiger Woods comes to mind — not to mention our current president. Captain’s picks?

Scouting Report:  B Team?! This squad is stacked.

Scottsdale, home of the fun fratty wreckage accompanying the Waste Management Phoenix Open, is an upscale suburb of Phoenix and boasts some high-caliber talent. A couple locals were in contention at this year’s Waste Management, including Reavie and Rahm.

2. Jon Rahm

17. Paul Casey

19. P. Perez

43. C. Reavie

61. J. Hahn

Avg. World Ranking: 28.4

Snubs: Kevin Streelman’s gettin’ hot!

Scouting report: Judging by the last few weeks, Chez Reavie is the hottest player in the game. Can Jon Rahm keep his engine from overheating and take Arizona to the top? We’re dying to find out.

At any given time, five of the world’s top 10 could meet for dinner in about 15 minutes.

1. Dustin Johnson

4. Justin Thomas

7. Rickie Fowler

9. Brooks Koepka

10. Rory McIlroy

Avg. World Ranking: 6.2

Snubs:  Nobody should feel bad being left off this team.

Scouting report: What’s left to say? In a match pitting Jupiter vs. the world, Jupiter would be favored.

Now let’s make this happen.

Count Charley Hoffman among those who will be watching to see how Shadow Creek Golf Club stacks up against the pros.

As a student at University of Nevada, Las Vegas in the early 1990s, Hoffman, who didn’t qualify for this week’s CJ Cup field, has witnessed some spirited matches there. This is back in the day when he caddied at Shadow Creek and didn’t have two nickels to rub together but often lined up putts with $10,000 a hole on the line.

“These guys would roll up with chips in colors and sizes I’d never seen before,” he said. “I’d try to keep it light. I’d go, ‘Are you going to pull this one like you did the last one because my read will be a little different.’”

Hoffman stuck around after school and called Las Vegas home for 20 years and never struggled to find money games when he was away from the Tour from the likes of former Running Rebel golfers such as Bill Lunde, Chris Riley, Ryan Moore and fellow touring pros Chris Perry, Dean Wilson, Eric Meeks, Ernie Gonzalez, just to name a few.

“If I didn’t have family in San Diego, I’d still be out there,” Hoffman said. “I’d recommend it to anybody.”

[jwplayer xRYfGIWO-9JtFt04J]

The reasons for Tour pros to set up shop in Las Vegas are many, but the most cited are access to two TPC facilities – TPC Las Vegas and TPC Summerlin, which hosted last week’s Shriners Hospitals for Children Open – a hospitably sunny climate and no state income taxes.

Doug Ghim, a native of Chicago who played his college golf in Austin, Texas, for the Longhorns, was looking for warmer climes and followed friends to Viva in Las Vegas.

“I hate humidity,” Ghim confessed. “That’s really why I chose it.”

But it didn’t hurt that two college teammates at UNLV: John Oda, who grew up in Hawaii, and Shintaro Ban, a Northern California native, were there, part of a migration of young touring pros that are eschewing Jupiter, Florida, and the typical hotspots of Orlando and Jacksonville area and Scottsdale, Arizona, to make Las Vegas once again the trendy spot to be. “The Jupiter of the West,” they are calling it, and the list of residents include PGA Championship winner Collin Morikawa, Aaron Wise, Wyndham Clark, Norman Xiong and Maverick McNealy.

CJ Cup: Tee times |  Fantasy rankings  |  Odds |  Shadow Creek

It was actually McNealy, who helped make Ghim’s decision to move to Vegas a “no brainer,” by offering a room in his pad for the princely sum of $400 a month.

“That seemed too good to pass up given I figured I’d be struggling on the Korn Ferry Tour for a little while,” Ghim said. “I was sleeping on a twin bed. Once I got my (Tour) card I was like I can’t justify living on a twin bed anymore.”

Ghim has gotten his own place, but McNealy found a new roommate in Joseph Bramlett, another Northern California transplant who played at Stanford and at 32 calls himself, “the old guy.” He moved there about a year ago at the same time as another San Jose, California product: Justin Suh. For Bramlett, it’s tough to beat living six minutes away from two TPC facilities, having the ability to catch a flight anywhere, and as he put it, “being around a lot of motivated people trying to do exactly what I want to do.”

“It’s a really good place,” he said. “You can always find someone to play with.”

That group would include vets of the area such as Scott Piercy, Kevin Na and Alex Cjeka as well as LPGA players Danielle Kang and Inbee Park and American-based European Tour pros David Lipsky and Kurt Kitayama. There’s also several top-notch instructors teaching there including Jeff Smith at TPC Summerlin and Butch Harmon at Rio Secco, which was part of the original attraction for McNealy to move there. But Bramlett may have said it best when asked why he decided not to join so many of his Tour brethren in taking a Florida mailing address.

“I’m definitely a West Coast boy,” he said.

Major champion collin morikawa joins with las vegas sands to engage with its resorts and empower thriving communities.

The six-time PGA Tour winner will support Sands on resort and community initiatives

LAS VEGAS , June 24, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- Las Vegas Sands (NYSE: LVS ) today announced that six-time PGA TOUR winner Collin Morikawa is the company's newest champion ambassador, a multi-year engagement that will incorporate the world-class athlete into the company's integrated resort programs and advance the mutual goal of building strong and resilient communities with priorities on youth development and community revitalization in areas of need.

Kicking off their joint work, Sands is donating $100,000 to the Maggie Hathaway Golf Course restoration project in Los Angeles . Morikawa, an LA native and honorary chairman of FORE Youth: The 2023 U.S. Open Community Legacy Campaign, has championed transformation of the golf course into a hub for junior golf development. The project aims to raise $15 million to rejuvenate the nine-hole, par-3 golf course, along with its practice facility and supporting buildings, as well as ensure long-term sustainability and youth development programming.

Through the broader partnership, Morikawa will continue supporting Sands at golf clinics designed to promote youth development and leadership skills, as he has done at the Sands Youth Golf Clinic in Macao and for the Sands Cares Youth Empowerment Initiative in Long Island, New York, where Sands hopes to build an integrated resort if successful in obtaining a Downstate New York gaming license.

Sharing a commitment to community advancement, Sands and Morikawa also will work together on revitalization programs, like the LA golf course restoration project and Morikawa's support of the relief efforts for the deadly wildfires in Hawaii last year.

"I've had the opportunity to work with Sands in New York and Macao, and we are very much aligned in our commitment to leverage the sport of golf to advance youth development and build leadership skills," Morikawa said. "But I'm just as excited that we share a vision for creating strong communities by addressing areas that need the infusion of resources we can bring to the table. Working together, we will create many opportunities for our joint community priorities."

A two-time major champion, six-time PGA TOUR winner, two-time Ryder Cup participant and Olympian at just 27, Morikawa has matched historical performances with one of the most genuine and relatable personalities in professional sports.

After putting the golf world on notice in 2020, he cemented his place in the history books in 2021.  With a win at the 2021 WGC-Workday Championship at The Concession, Morikawa joined Tiger Woods as the only players to have won a major and a WGC title before the age of 25. After top-10 performances at both the 2021 PGA Championship and U.S. Open, Morikawa joined the exclusive club entitled Champion Golfer of the Year with his commanding performance at the 2021 Open Championship. This performance again linked Morikawa and Woods, as they are now the only two players to have won both the PGA Championship and Open Championship before the age of 25.

At the 2020 PGA Championship, Morikawa hit one of the most iconic shots in major championship history, en route to victory with his sensational drive at the par-4 16th hole, which set up an eagle that cemented his place as a major winner. His two-shot win at Harding Park also carried historic significance, as he joined Jack Nicklaus , Woods and Rory McIlroy as the only 23-year-olds to win the Wanamaker Trophy.

Born and raised in Los Angeles and now a resident of Las Vegas , Morikawa has excelled both on the course and in the classroom as a 2019 graduate of the prestigious Haas School of Business at University of California, Berkeley . When not competing, Morikawa devotes himself to spending time with his wife, dog and finding the best eats in town.

"Collin is an outstanding partner for us on many fronts, first and foremost because of his leadership both on and off the course," Sands Chairman and CEO Robert G. Goldstein said. "Between our mutual home of Las Vegas and shared Asia roots, we intend to create a host of opportunities to advance the priorities and causes that are equally important to us."

2024 U.S. Open picks, odds, field: Surprising predictions by PGA golf model that's won 12 majors

Sportsline's proven model simulated the u.s. open 2024 10,000 times and revealed its surprising pga tour golf picks.

pga tour players from las vegas

Scottie Scheffler has never won a major outside of Augusta National, but he heads to the 2024 U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2 as one of the shortest betting favorites in over a decade. Scheffler won the Memorial Tournament last week, marking his fifth win of the season. He is the 11-4 favorite in the 2024 U.S. Open odds and has not finished outside the top 20 since last August. Should you back Scheffler at short odds with your 2024 U.S. Open prediction? Scheffler will have to fend off other 2024 U.S. Open contenders like Rory McIlroy (10-1), Xander Schauffele (10-1) and Bryson DeChambeau (10-1).

Pinehurst No. 2 has not hosted the top PGA pros since 2014, so which course factors matter the most when you comb through the 2024 U.S. Open field ahead of Thursday's 2024 U.S. Open tee times starting at 6:45 a.m. ET? Before locking in any 2024 U.S. Open picks of your own, entering PGA DFS lineups on sites like DraftKings and FanDuel, or finalizing U.S. Open props and U.S. Open Pick 6 or PrizePicks entries, be sure to see the 2024 U.S. Open golf predictions and projected leaderboard from the proven computer model at SportsLine .

Our proprietary model, built by DFS pro Mike McClure, has been red-hot since the PGA Tour resumed in June of 2020. In fact, the model is up almost $9,000 on its best bets since the restart, nailing tournament after tournament.

McClure's model correctly predicted Scheffler would finish on top of the leaderboard at the 2024 Masters, the Arnold Palmer Invitational, and The Players Championship this season. McClure also included Hideki Matsuyama in his best bets to win the 2024 Genesis Invitational. That bet hit at +9000, and for the entire tournament, McClure's best bets returned nearly $1,000.

The model also predicted Rahm would be victorious at the 2023 Sentry Tournament of Champions and The American Express. At the 2023 Masters, the model was all over Rahm's second career major victory heading into the weekend. Rahm was two strokes off the lead heading into the third round, but the model still projected him as the winner. It was the second straight Masters win for the model, which also nailed Scheffler winning in 2022.

This same model has also nailed a whopping 12 majors entering the weekend, including the last three Masters and 2024 PGA Championship. Anyone who has followed it is way up.

Now with the U.S. Open 2024 approaching, SportsLine simulated the tournament 10,000 times, and the results were surprising. Head to SportsLine now to see the projected leaderboard .

Top 2024 U.S. Open predictions

One major surprise the model is calling for at the 2024 U.S. Open: Xander Schauffele, one of the top favorites and the most recent major winner at the PGA Championship, stumbles and barely cracks the top five. Schauffele finally picked up his first major win in 28 tries when he held off Bryson DeChambeau and Viktor Hovland at Valhalla in May.

That has vaulted him up in the PGA odds as he's now the co-second favorite in the U.S. Open 2024 odds. However, his overall track record doesn't justify that kind of status as he has just three top-five finishes in majors since 2019. He also was shaky at The Memorial over the weekend, shooting two rounds of 73 or higher to fall out of contention. The model has found better values to utilize in 2024 U.S. Open bets.  See who else to fade here .

Another surprise: Brooks Koepka, a 20-1 longshot, makes a strong run at the title. He has a much better chance to win than his long odds imply, so he's a target for anyone looking for a huge payday. Koepka went on one of the most memorable winning streaks in the history of major championships several years ago, winning four majors in just two years.

He opened that stretch with a win in the 2017 U.S. Open, and he added another U.S. Open victory to his resume when he defended his title in 2018. Koepka added a runner-up finish in 2019 and a T4 in 2021 before finishing T17 last year. He has not cracked the top 15 at a major in his last four tries, but he is primed to make a run at another major title this weekend, especially since he finished T4 when Pinehurst No. 2 hosted the 2014 U.S. Open.  See who else to back here .

How to make 2024 U.S. Open picks

The model is also targeting two other golfers with odds of 20-1 or longer to make a strong run at the title. It's also targeting two triple-digit longshots in its best bets. Anyone who backs these longshots could hit it big. You can only see the model's picks here .

Who will win the 2024 U.S. Open, and which longshots will stun the golfing world? Check out the U.S. Open 2024 odds below and then visit SportsLine to see the projected U.S. Open leaderboard, all from the model that's nailed 12 golf majors, including the last three Masters and the 2024 PGA Championship .

PGA Tour Champions President Identifies ‘Ideal’ Debut Event for Tiger Woods

  • Author: Cameron Flynn

PGA Tour Champions President Miller Brady is already laying the groundwork for Tiger Woods ' eventual debut on the men's professional senior golf tour.

Eligible to play Champions Tour events after turning 50 next December, Woods still has over a year to select his senior tour debut event - if he chooses to play right away.

Should Tiger take that route, Brady believes the Mitsubishi Electric Championship in January 2026 would be an "ideal" debut event for the 15-time major champion.

"I just want Tiger to come out here and play a little bit,” Brady said, via Golfweek . “In an ideal situation, Tiger turns 50 and the Mitsubishi Electric (in January 2026) is his first start.

"Maybe you pair him with Fred Couples and they have a great time."

Woods, currently 48, has struggled to simply walk 72 holes at PGA Tour events in recent years.

Using a cart - an option given to Champions Tour players at most non-major events - could extend Tiger's career from a health standpoint while also allowing him to stay in better competitive shape should he continue playing the men's majors.

Cameron Young shoots the 13th sub-60 round in PGA Tour history at the Travelers Championship

The first one came in 1977.

It was another 14 years before someone did it again.

It was then eight years after that before it happened a third time.

Breaking 60 has always held mythical status in golf.

Al Geiberger (1977), Chip Beck (1991) and David Duval (1999) were the first three to pull it off.

Since 2010, there have been eight more PGA Tour golfers who shot a 59, including Jim Furyk, who also shot a record-setting 58 from in 2016. He remains the only golfer to shoot a 58 on Tour and he’s the only golfer to break 60 twice.

Scottie Scheffler also broke 60 on the PGA Tour, shooting a 59 in the second round of the 2020 Northern Trust. It was the 12th time that a Tour golfer broke 60.

At the 2024 Travelers Championship, Cameron Young got off to a red-hot start in the third round on Saturday and knocked in a tester for par on the final hole of the day to become the 13th player to turn the trick. He began with two birdies before recording an eagle on the par-4 third hole. He added five more birdies and an eagle on the par-4 15th hole.

His previous low on the PGA Tour was a 62, recorded in 2022 in the second round of the Genesis Invitational.

On the LPGA, there has only been one 59. It came in 2001 and was accomplished by Annika Sorenstam.

Bryson DeChambeau joined the 58 Club after his 12-under round in a LIV Golf event. Joaquin Niemann’s 59 in the 2024 LIV opener made him the second on that circuit to do it.

Here’s a closer look at the sub-60 rounds on the PGA Tour:

Jim Furyk – 2016 – 58

Jim Furyk tore up the course at TPC River Highlands on Aug. 7, 2016, with a 12-under 58 in the Travelers Championship, the first and still only 58 on the PGA Tour. His round included 10 birdies, an eagle and seven pars. While six players had previously shot 59 in a PGA Tour round, Furyk became the first to earn the “Mr. 58” distinction. He’s also the first player to shoot two sub-60 rounds in official golf tournaments, as he also shot a 59 in the second round of the 2013 BMW Championship. Furyk finished the tournament tied for fifth.

Al Geiberger – 1977 – 59

Al Geiberger was the first player to shoot 59 in a PGA Tour event when he did so during the second round in 1977 at Colonial Country Club. Known at “Mr. 59,” he had 11 birdies and an eagle on the par-72 course. He remains the only PGA Tour history to win a non-major without a single round in the 60s. His other rounds at that Memphis Classic were 72, 72 and 70. Geiberger went on to win the tournament by three shots over Jerry McGee and Gary Player.

Chip Beck – 1991 – 59

During the third round of the 1991 Las Vegas Invitational at the Sunrise Golf Course, Chip Beck caught fire and shot a 13 under (all birdies) on the par-72 layout. He made the turn, after starting on the back nine, with a 7-under 29. He proceeded to shoot 6 under on the front and become the second golfer in Tour history to break 60. “The way I did it today, I could have shot 59 anywhere,” Beck told the  Los Angeles Times  after his round. “It’s nice to be aligned with Geiberger. He’s always been a hero of mine.” He finished tied for third.

David Duval – 1999 – 59

It took 14 years between the first and second 59s in PGA Tour history. It was another eight years before the third 59 was posted. It came when David Duval played the final round of the 1999 Bob Hope Chrysler Classic. He trailed by 7 shots after three rounds but carded 10 birdies heading through 17 holes. He then eagled the par-5 18th with a 6-foot putt to get his 59 and clinch the victory. Duval’s 59 was the first to come in the final round.

Paul Goydos – 2010 – 59

An opening-round 59 happened at the John Deere Classic in 2010 as Paul Goydos just needed 22 putts to get to 12 under. His 8-under 28 on the back nine matched the lowest nine-hole score in relation to par on the PGA Tour. He then continued with a 4-under on the front nine. It was the first of two 59s on Tour in 2010.  Goydos finished second in the tournament, two shots back of Steve Stricker.

Stuart Appleby – 2010 – 59

A final round 11-under 59 at the 2010 Greenbrier Classic allowed Stuart Appleby to grab his fifth PGA Tour title in style. He had nine birdies on his front nine, then an eagle and three more birdies on the back nine becoming the fifth player on the PGA Tour to break 60 and the second player to do so in 2010.

Jim Furyk – 2013 – 59

Three years before Furyk shot his 58, he posted a 59 in the second round of the BMW Championship. The 2018 U.S. Ryder Cup captain made 11 birdies and holed out for eagle on the par-4 15th hole at Conway Farms Golf Club. He made a 3-footer at the par-4 ninth hole, his final hole. For the tournament, Fuyrk finished third, three shots back of winner Zach Johnson.

Justin Thomas – 2017 – 59

Justin Thomas  posted the seventh 59  and eighth sub-60 score in PGA Tour history at the 2017 Sony Open. Thomas opened with an eagle to get to 9 under through 13 on the par-70 Waialae Country Club. He faced a 10-footer for par on No. 8 (his 17th), and he needed to make it drop to keep the 59 hopes alive. He drained it. Needing an eagle at the last to shoot 59, he hit his second shot on the par 5 to 15 feet. The rest is history. Thomas went on to win the tournament by seven shots over Justin Rose.

Adam Hadwin – 2017 – 59

Adam Hadwin fired a 13-under 59 at the 2017 CareerBuilder Challenge, becoming the eighth player in PGA Tour history to shoot 59. His round came during Round 3 at La Quinta Country Club, one of three courses being played for the tournament. Hadwin finished the event in second, one shot behind winner Hudson Swafford.

Brandt Snedeker – 2018 – 59

Snedeker shot 11-under 59 Thursday in the first round of the Wyndham Championship thanks to a 20-foot birdie putt on No. 9, his final hole of the day at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, North Carolina. Snedeker teed off on No. 10 and shot an inconspicuous 3-under 32 over his first nine holes, which included an opening bogey. He tore it up down the stretch with an 8-under 27 over his last nine holes, with six birdies and a 176-yard eagle hole-out at the par-4 sixth. He’s the first player ever to break 60 after starting with a bogey. Snedeker won the tournament by three shots.

Kevin Chappell – 2019 – 59

Kevin Chappell shot a 59 during the second round of A Military Tribute at The Greenbrier in 2019. He used a record-tying stretch of nine-consecutive birdies to reach 11-under for the day, becoming the 11th player to break 60 in the history of the PGA Tour. He finished the event T-47.

Scottie Scheffler – 2020 – 59

Add another 59 to the PGA Tour record books. Scottie Scheffler logged the iconic number at TPC Boston in the second round of the 2020 Northern Trust. Scheffler’s round of 12-under 59 came after an opening 1-under 70. He clinched the 59 with a four-footer for birdie on the par-5 closing hole. It’s the 12th time a PGA Tour golfer broke 60.

Cameron Young - 2024 – 59

Cameron Young made it interesting on the last hole, but he sunk a nine-foot putt for par on the 18th hole and finished with a 59 in the third round of the Travelers Championship.

UNLV duo are officially PGA Tour members

Former Rebel teammates Taylor Montgomery and Harry Hall both earned their PGA Tour playing cards for the 2023 season.

OMAHA, NEBRASKA - AUGUST 14: Taylor Montgomery poses for a photo after earning the PGA TOUR car ...

They grew up 5,100 miles apart, both with a childhood love of golf. They became friends and teammates at UNLV, competitors on the Korn Ferry Tour, occasional practice partners and dinner companions.

And now, in a bid of serendipity, Taylor Montgomery and Harry Hall are both headed to the PGA Tour in September.

Montgomery wrapped up his card several weeks ago thanks to a stellar season on the Korn Ferry Tour. Another close call — he’s had his share of those — on Sunday vaulted him to fifth in the final regular-season points standings.

A victory in Illinois in May put Hall well within the top 25, and a solid summer resulted in his 17th-place position and the precious promotion.

Both are excited about what the future holds. Montgomery, for one, couldn’t wait for the weekend to end in Nebraska when everything became official.

“I think everybody inside the top 15, 16 that know they’re getting their card are ready for that beer at the end of the round,” he said Friday.

Hall was reflective of his journey from West Cornwall Golf Club to Las Vegas and now the PGA Tour.

“I just tried to take a step up the ladder every year, and that’s what I did,” Hall said. “There was steady progress, and hopefully I can keep doing that for the rest of my career.”

For Montgomery, the season helped put behind the agony of 2021, when he finished 26th in both the regular-season standings and the Korn Ferry Finals — one spot shy of a card in both instances.

He says those outcomes made him stronger.

“I just tried to get better,” he said. “It was really my ball striking last year that held me back, because I putted better last year than I did this year for sure. It was amazing that I even had a chance at a PGA Tour card in my opinion, with how bad my iron play was last year.”

Hall, who had a top-10 finish as a sponsor’s invite in last year’s Shriners Children’s Open, is already thinking big. Really big.

Jim Barnes, a member at West Cornwall, won three of the four major championships in the 1910s and 1920s. Hall hopes to close the missing link.

“If I can get the Masters, it’ll be a cherry on top,” he said.

Kang set to return

Danielle Kang, sidelined since early June with a tumor on her spine, is returning to the LPGA Tour.

The Las Vegas golfer has been private about her condition, providing few updates as the six-time winner has visited specialists and dealt with the issue.

But she announced on her Instagram account that she plans to play the CP Women’s Open in Ottawa the last week of August.

“I know you missed us,” she wrote to go with a picture of her and caddie Olly Brett, providing no other details.

Six players with Las Vegas ties have moved on to the BMW Championship, the PGA Tour’s second playoff event limited to the top 70 players in the FedEx Cup standings.

Xander Schauffele (No. 6), Collin Morikawa (No. 20), Maverick McNealy (No. 32), Seamus Power (No. 36), Adam Scott (No. 45) and Kurt Kitayama (No. 48) will play this week, aiming for a spot in the top 30 and a berth in the season-ending Tour Championship.

Seasons ended over the weekend for David Lipsky (No. 84), Scott Piercy (No. 110), Nick Watney (No. 114) and Doug Ghim (No. 116).

Nevada State Mid-Amateur

Tongun Lako Losarah shot three rounds in the 60s to win the Nevada State Mid-Amateur last week on the Snow Mountain course at Paiute Golf Resort.

Lako Lorarah finished at 11-under 205 for a three-shot victory over Tanner Johnson. Joseph Fortunato was third, seven shots back.

PGA Tour players welcomed by 'luscious' and wet course at Detroit Golf Club

T he scoring-friendly environment and healthy green grass at Detroit Golf Club is a welcome sight for PGA Tour golfer Min Woo Lee after grinding through Pinehurst No. 2 in his previous event, the U.S. Open.

Lee finished 5-over in the U.S. Open then skipped the Travelers Championship last week to prepare for his first stop at the Rocket Mortgage Classic from home in Las Vegas. Lee, a tour rookie ranked No. 64 in the FedEx Cup standings, is ready for the new environment on Detroit’s northside after grinding through one of the toughest courses on the Tour this season.

FULL DETAILS: 2024 Rocket Mortgage Classic: Here are the events this week at Detroit Golf Club

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

“The course looks amazing,” said Lee, a native of Australia. “Coming from the U.S. Open, it’s a bit greener so it’s quite nice. Hopefully the weather holds.”

Lee, one of the top-ranked players in the 156-player field set to tee off Thursday, spoke to the media Tuesday after a torrential thunderstorm pounded the course with rain for most of the morning and partially delayed proceedings.

The thick rough and “luscious” greens, as Lee described them, received an extra amount of water two days before the tournament begins due to the two-hour thunderstorm. But the sea of green was a welcome sight for Lee, who spent the last fortnight training in the unrelenting Vegas heat after playing a challenging and dried-out Pinehurst.

“If we played (Pinehurst) every week, I’d probably have no hair by now,” the 25-year-old rookie said. “It’s nice to just come to a course that’s really green and luscious."

The relative ease of Detroit Golf Club’s setup leads to a lower scoring environment for the Rocket Mortgage Classic compared to some other PGA Tour stops. Rickie Fowler won the 2023 tournament at 24-under after prevailing in a three-man playoff, and 2022 winner Tony Finau shot 26-under.

“I find making birdies fun; bogies aren’t fun,” Lee said.

The key to going low, he said, was to be accurate off the tee with his driver. Despite not playing in Detroit before, the scouting report Lee received from the Tour and other players he talked to said low scores are possible if you can be aggressive and straight with the biggest club in the bag.

“It’s a course where you can hit driver a lot and take advantage of a lot of corners,” Lee said. “I guess take advantage if you do hit driver well. Hopefully, I can do that this week.”

Willie Mack III, the Flint native who qualified via the John Shi p pen Invitational , said he will be ready for any conditions on the course after experiencing two different weather days in the 36-hole tournament he won last weekend, and seeing the wet course after the rain today.

“Just seeing those conditions and different aspects hopefully will help me this week,” Mack said. “I’m not sure about the plan this week but if it’s windy at least I know what clubs not to hit. I know it’s wet out, it’s not a firm course this week.”

Mack is making his second appearance in the Rocket Mortgage Classic — he played on a sponsor's exemption in 2021 — and his ninth on the PGA Tour. Mack's 2021 appearance was the first time he made the cut on Tour. He hopes to take advantage of his course knowledge thanks to playing Detroit Golf Club “a million times” in his life and the quality golf he’s been playing recently, including the John Shippen win and qualifying for the U.S. Open to take advantage of his spot.

“I’ve been playing well,” Mack said. “It’s just when you get these opportunities, I gotta keep and play well. Not let these opportunities go to waste.”
