Pearl Jam and Vancouver have a history, as Eddie Vedder reminded an arena of faithful last night.

Concert review: Pearl Jam opens new tour with an epic night in Vancouver Back to video

It was the first date of the Seattle band’s current North American tour and the vocalist laid it on thick, praising the city, recalling their first gig here at the Town Pump (in ’91, opening for Alice in Chains), mentioning how they had decided we were the right choice for opening night of their new world tour, and referencing the Canucks and even today’s Vancouver Marathon .

In between the kind words, Vedder and crew played the hits, the deep cuts, the new stuff, and a few covers in a Rogers Arena concert that lasted for over two-and-a-half hours.

It was longer than Napoleon.

To start, the band eased into the evening with a few midtempo sure bets, including the sepia-toned Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town. The slowburn paid off with song four, Given to Fly, a jet-fuelled rocker that segued into world premieres of four new tracks — the barnburners Scared of Fear, React, Respond, and the new album’s title song, and the moodier, delicate Wreckage. The latter, with its trademark PJ guitar riffage, sounds destined to join the ranks of fan favourites.

The band returned the show to terra firma with Daughter, one of the long-running outfit’s most revered numbers. Correctly gauging that the audience would lose its collective s–t if he did something like, oh, I don’t know, drop a few lines into the song from one of the country’s most beloved musical institutions, Vedder added a verse from Tragically Hip’s Bobcaygeon. 15,000 or so Canadians roared their approval.

The reference brought to mind the late, great Gord Downie, who connected to the audience in the same intentional, committed way that Vedder does.

Anyway, back to the show. If you wanted deep cuts, you got ‘em, with Leatherman, played live for the “first time since 2016” according to setlist.fm , and the deepest cut of all — Chloe Dancer/Crown of Thorns by Mother Love Bone, the proto-Seattle band co-founded by future Pearl Jammers Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament.

It was about an hour into the proceedings that Vedder started reaching for the wine. I must say, it’s refreshing to see someone enjoying a tipple onstage in today’s careerist, ultracautious live music environment. Or maybe I’ve just been going to the wrong shows.

First night jitters were apparent: The band screwed up a song (Red Mosquito, from 1996’s No Code) — and this right after the singer had pointed out the soundman to the crowd, saying that he’d been with the band for 20 years and his only job is to adjust two buttons, the “Suck” and “Don’t Suck” buttons. Talk about jinxing yourself.

Otherwise, the players were in the pocket, as one would expect from an act at this level. And Vedder’s voice sounded phenomenal; he seems to have lost none of his emotional power or grit or range. But were they on fire?

Let’s just say that their second Vancouver show, Monday night, could leave this one in the dust.

Not to jinx it …

Another set of Dark Matter material included Upper Hand, with a chorus stickier even than the Rogers Arena floor; Won’t Tell, a ringing slab of ‘90s guitar-rock; and Running, the record’s leanest and meanest. The lyrics of Won’t Tell, Vedder informed us, are based on a dream that bassist Jeff Ament had that involved “a Canadian woman.” Make of that what you will.

A taste of Upper Hand #PearlJam pic.twitter.com/yeG0FqCUPw — father hubbard (@fatherhubbard) May 5, 2024

Ament, by the way, wore a tour T-shirt from the band Idles — perhaps bought at the British act’s much-raved about show the previous night at the PNE Forum.

Throughout the concert, a V-shaped wall-to-wall screen behind the band complemented the performance with graphics, including musician and audience close-ups and cosmological images, as befits the album title (“dark matter” being a scientific term for matter that does not interact with light or the electromagnetic field).

After a jammy, long-winded Porch, the first selection of the night from the group’s 1991, 13-million-selling debut Ten, the gang of pushing-60-somethings took a well-earned breather. Vedder returned for a solo version of Tom Petty’s I Won’t Back Down before Ament, lead guitarist Mike McCready, rhythm guitarist Stone Gossard, drummer Matt Cameron, and touring musicians Josh Klinghoffer and Kenneth “Boom” Gaspar, filed back out.

After Black, another Ten cut, Vedder dedicated Dark Matter’s sweetest song, Something Special, to one of his daughters, who he said was at the show.

No one, not band or audience, wanted to leave as the house lights came on and Pearl Jam, one of the last standard-bearers of the Gen X dream, blasted through Alive, a signature anthem that has never sounded more relevant, and Neil Young’s Rockin’ in the Free World (ditto). Setting Sun, Dark Matter’s last and perhaps most hopeful track, saw us out into the night.

Side note: Opening the current month-long West Coast leg of the Dark Matter World Tour is Seattle’s Deep Sea Diver. Before the headliner’s Saturday night set, vocalist/guitarist Jessica Dobson tossed off barbed, scrappy licks as she led the five-piece through songs from Impossible Weight — KEXP Seattle listeners’ favourite album from 2000 — and from a forthcoming record.

Pearl Jam kicked off their world tour in support of Dark Matter Saturday in Vancouver, where the band delivered the live debuts of the majority of their new album’s songs.

Of the 11 tracks on Dark Matter , Eddie Vedder and company performed nine of them — only “Waiting for Stevie” and “Got to Give” were omitted — at the Rogers Arena, seven of which were played live for the first time; “Running” and “Scared to Fear” were previously given live debuts during an appearance on Howard Stern last month.

Among the debuts were the title track, the single “Wreckage,” “Won’t Tell,” and Dark Matter ’s closing track “Setting Sun,” which also was the final song Pearl Jam performed at their Vancouver show Saturday.

Pearl Jam appears to have been alive and busy recently, with a new tour and music announced on the same day.

The band, one of the biggest to come from our American neighbours in Seattle, is launching their newest world tour not from their hometown, but from downtown Vancouver. They'll be in town on the future days of May 4 and 6, 2024.

"Their global tour, hitting nine countries and 25 cities, kicks off at Rogers Arena in Vancouver, British Columbia, and will cover much of North America including shows at Wrigley Field, Madison Square Garden, Fenway Park," states Live Nation in a media release.

The tour announcement was paired with the release of a new single from their forthcoming  Dark Matter album (due to be released on April 19).

Opening for Pearl Jam in Vancouver will be Deep Sea Diver , a Seattle band founded by and led by Jessica Dobson (who joined The Shins for a spell and has played with Beck, Spoon, and the Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs).

Those wanting tickets will have to take a moment and just breathe.

There will be a presale for the band's fan club, the Ten Club (as long as they were members before Feb. 12).

To make sure there's an evenflow of tickets, they'll be available through a registration system on TicketMaster; registration for North America  is open now and will remain open until Sunday, Feb. 18. On Feb. 22, people who registered will be told if they were chosen to buy tickets for the concert they selected or if they've been waitlisted.

The band is also using the fan-to-fan face value exchange program from TicketMaster for the resale of tickets to help deter scalpers.

On May 4 and 6, Pearl Jam kicked off its sprawling world tour with a dazzling pair of appearances at Vancouver, British Columbia’s Rogers Arena. To celebrate the release of its 12th studio album Dark Matter , which was released to widespread acclaim on April 19, the storied three-decade grunge vanguard presented two sets that both honored its history and blazed bold new pathways to the future of its sound. Pairing live debuts of hot new entries with stone-cold classics and beloved covers, the band forecasted a tour for the ages, which will continue to floor fans in 25 cities through November.

During an exclusive preview performance of the band’s latest album at The Troubadour in Los Angeles, iconic frontman Eddie Vedder said of Dark Matter , “No hyperbole, I think this is our best work.” At the outset of the Dark Matter World Tour, the band proved just this, tearing down the house with live debuts of new essentials like “Running,”, “React, Respond,” “Wreckage” and “Dark Matter” that have swept across the world through tremendous radio coverage and critical exaltation in the past few weeks. The undeniable force of these fresh cuts booms in a video of the band’s inaugural staging of the title track, captured in a fan recorded video below.

Beyond its new material, Pearl Jam treated Canadian fans to signatures like “Even Flow,” “Black,” “Alive” and “Got To Give” which–coupled with jaw-dropping stage production–showed the band at peak performance after 34 years of vaunted collaboration. Beyond its traditional cannon, the group thrilled fans everywhere with a long-awaited bust-out of “Leatherman,” a beloved deep-cut that was last staged in 2016. For further fan service, the group took requests on night one and Vedder shared a heartfelt message to the audience from backstage during the set break. A second clip shares a stirring rendition of “Alive,” which showed the audience roaring along to the chart-topping ballad of broken relationships.

The excitement continued into expansive encores for the two-and-a-half-hour shows, which showed some of band’s most beloved cover treatments, including Neil Young’s “Rockin’ in the Free World,” The Who’s “Baba O’Riley” and Warren Zevon’s “Keep Me in Your Heart.” After returning to the stage on night one, Vedder shared that the guitar he held was a gift from the late, great Tom Petty, kicking off a moving tribute to the country star with “I Won’t Back Down.”

Pearl Jam will return to the stage on Friday, May 10, with a show at Portland, Ore.’s Moda Center, then continue into a West Coast leg, followed by a European run. For tickets and more information on the band’s world tour, visit https://pearljam.com/home .

Pearl Jam Announce World Tour and New Album Dark Matter , Share New Song: Listen

Pearl Jam

Pearl Jam have announced a world tour and a new album. Dark Matter , the band’s 12th full-length studio album, arrives on April 19 (via Monkeywrench/ Republic ). The band has shared the title track, which you can listen to below.

The follow-up to 2020’s Gigaton was written and recorded in three weeks, with the band holing up at Rick Rubin’s Shangri-La in Malibu. Andrew Watt, who produced Eddie Vedder ’s star-studded 2022 album, Earthling , was tapped to produce Dark Matter . “[Watt] has encyclopedic knowledge of our history, not only as a band and how we wrote songs, but as players,” said bassist Jeff Ament. “He could pinpoint things we did on old songs to the point where I was like, ‘What the fuck is he talking about?’ His excitement was contagious.”

“We’re still looking for ways to communicate,” said Vedder of the writing and recording experience. “We’re at this time in our lives when you could do it or you could not do it, but we still care about putting something out there that is meaningful and we hopefully think is our best work. No hyperbole, I think this is our best work.”

The band’s world tour stops in nine countries and 25 cities, all spread out across six months. It kicks off in Vancouver, British Columbia, on May 4 and brings the band across the United States and Europe before ending, for now, in Sydney, Australia, on November 21. Peppered in between are outdoor baseball stadium shows, arena gigs, and festival dates at Mad Cool and NOS Alive. Find the full list of tour dates below.

Pearl Jam Detail New Album 'Dark Matter,' Share Title Track and World Tour Dates

They'll perform in Vancouver this May

pearl jam tour 2022 vancouver

BY Megan LaPierre Published Feb 13, 2024

As previously teased , grunge elder-statesmen Pearl Jam are back with their 12th studio album, previewed today by its title track.

UPDATE (2/13, 11:27 a.m. ET): The band have also announced a world tour behind the record, which includes a pair of Canadian stops at Vancouver's Rogers Arena on May 4 and 6. You can register now to buy tickets starting next Friday (February 23), and find Pearl Jam's full itinerary below.

Dark Matter arrives April 19 via Monkeywrench / Republic Records . The band put together the follow-up to 2020's Gigaton in just three weeks at Rick Rubin's Shangri-La Studios — a marked departure from the prolonged process they've tended toward for previous LPs.

The album was produced by Andrew Watt, who worked on frontman Eddie Vedder 's solo material, like 2022's Earthling , and has also produced recent releases for Ozzy Osbourne and Iggy Pop.

As founding guitarist Mike McCready explained in an interview last year, "[Watt] got us into a room and just pushed us as hard as we could be pushed. ... We've done things for 30 years. So we know the dynamics of our band very well. But sometimes we need to get pushed and questioned, and Andrew did a great job of that."

Hear the rip-roaring, thrashy title track — which pays homage to legendary metal singer King Diamond — below, where you'll also find the full album tracklist.

Dark Matter :

1. Scared of Fear 2. React, Respond 3. Wreckage 4. Dark Matter 5. Won’t Tell 6. Upper Hand 7. Waiting for Stevie 8. Running 9. Something Special 10. Got to Give 11. Setting Sun

Night 2 in Vancouver kicks off with another 4-song set of 90’s material, Ed commenting during Nothingman “…good singin’,” and the house lights are up for the ending. Immortality is an early surprise, with an extended jam at the end and Jeff, Mike, Stone, and Ed all gathered around Matt. The silhouettes are up on the screen for the 4th song again, another Yield one tonight, In Hiding. After a uptempo Scared of Fear, Ed says “…like that one? That’s Mr. Stone Gossard.” Before Wreckage, he talks about all the one-word song titles on Ten , mentioning a few, and says the next one follows that tradition. Following Dark Matter, Ed says Mike “makes it look easy, even when it’s not” and hears someone make a comment about Mike, causing him to utter “fuck you” teasingly, pointing out a crowd member with a “sexy hat and glasses…don’t fuck with my man Mike McCready…” He talks about a 14-year-old girl named Hannah, who has “a bit of a medical thing,” but the doctors were able to move her surgery to next week so she could attend the show. After Wishlist, Ed says they’re “switching the list for a second” and Down is cut and Even Flow is moved up. Mike puts on a clinic again during Even Flow, and continues with a soaring solo on Quick Escape, which still has plenty of post- Gigaton energy. Got to Give makes it debut, with a fiery visual behind it. Ed explains afterwards that the Red Mosquito flub from night 1 was his fault, even though he tried to blame it on Jeff, and adds “accountability feels so good…feel free to boo me as well,” and there’s a smattering of boos, and he encourages more, and by the third time there’s a decent boo from the crowd. An extreme closeup of Jeff’s hands is shown during the end of Jeremy, and Ed points out a young boy named Ryan who’s been rocking out on his dad’s shoulders all night, teasing that the pot smell is coming from his direction. Ed gets on the overhead projector again during the break:

So…last week in Seattle

We hung out with Stanley

THE STANLEY CUP

May it arrive here NEXT

GO COACH TOCCHET

AND the CANUCKS!

1st PJ show ever OCT 91 in Seattle

1st PJ show in Vancouver Jan 11 91!

As he’s writing the Vancouver date, he realizes his mistake and erases the 1 in OCT 91 and changes it to a zero for 1990, then continues:

1st show Town Pump

1st show w/Neil Young

here in ’92?

our favorite B.C. show

Commodore Ballroom 2000

Here, he goes back and puts an up arrow in between “our” and “favorite” and adds “new” and finishes it off with:

Rogers Arena 2024

Coming out on stage again solo, Ed talks about loss, and mentions that on April 21st, Jerome Rothenburg had passed away, calling him a poet, and that he had been married for 74 years, and that he had known Jerome’s son Matthew when he was young. Keep Me in Your Heart is dedicated to their family. Do the Evolution has more of the original video tonight, none of the extra footage that was in the previous performance. Ed does add in the “admire Stone” line, though. Afterwards, he says that they “played this one at the Town Pump…and then we didn’t play it for a long time,” leading into Alone! Alive follows, the first time those two songs have been played consecutively since 2/28/92 (the first time was, of course, at the Off Ramp in 1990)! Setting Sun closes out the show again, with a very cool eye-based visualizer. 10 of 11 Dark Matter songs played over the two nights, but we’re still waiting for Waiting For Stevie.

Surrounded by water, the Oceans opener is no surprise. Ed has a ukulele for Can’t Keep. A stage light and mood switch occurs with Corduroy. The band teams up with each other to come together for a wild Corduroy outro. Perfect call and response by the audience on MYM. Ed takes a moment to crack open some wine and offers a quick hello, “we’ll be home soon enough but we’re in Vancouver, we’re not going anywhere. We’ll talk later. Let’s keep going,” keeping the energy up with Gods’ Dice and Lightning Bolt. Stone leads the way into In Hiding and Ed reaches for the wine and gestures to his throat and chest and mouths something about his voice. It looks like Boom is reading the sheet music. Ed tells a joke about meeting someone from Mexico and a couple from Sweden who have come to Vancouver for the “tropical weather.” He reminisces about an early 1991 show at the Town Pump in Vancouver where the audience was the size of the first row and they remember playing this song…cue Even Flow. During the solo, Ed speaks to a tech who fixes something while Ed shares an enormous bottle of wine with the front row. Mike tiptoes out of the solo as do the backing guitars, leaving Matt’s mastery on display. Stone gets pretty bluesy for the Not For You solo and Ed does a yodel call and response with the audience. Lights go out to spotlight Ed on his guitar for After Hours. He asks for the crowd to help with lyrics for Gonna See My Friend, has a mini jam session with Stone at the end and they sneak in a few chords of Porch. Mike is on his knees for the Porch solo, Matt maintains the beat with otherworldly precision during a super extended bridge. Jeff swats at the hanging globes and Ed plays front row bartender and proceeds to climb the lighting, mic in hand.

After the break, he toasts the bartender/guitar tech who brings him the wine and grabs his ukulele to play Soon Forget, last played in 2006! A tech issue follows and he eggs on the audience with some hockey-talk and a shout-out to friend Chris Chelios which the crowd jokingly disapproves of. Each member of the band is highlighted on a beautifully mellow Thumbing My Way. After Mother, Ed says “as a taxpayer, you might contribute to things you don’t necessarily agree with…bombs dropping on children…now we have drones…I’m not getting into it,” and jokes that he will leave the crowd with a tale of a 4.5 hour concert with 3 hours of music and 1.5 hours of politics, leading into an energetic Insignificance. Ed struggles a bit with the lyrics and the chords during Better Man, gets the audience to assist, states “I fucked up, I know,” and continues to take long pauses, playing with the audience. Stone joins Mike and Jeff’s side of the stage and then Ed joins in, creating a little guitar posse. The song continues and Ed asks “Should we stop now?” The “don’t run away” line has a list of tags:

“like my father did…like my brother did…like my sister did…like my uncle did…like all my friends…like my first girlfriend did…”

Ed windmills, rests on Mike before the final guitar push of the outro and we get not one, not two, not three, but four signature jumps.

Ed introduces “Mr. Stone Gossard and Andy Wolf who looks after Stone’s shit and is a total champ tonight,” in reference to the tech issues. Ed thanks Mudhoney for opening for them and again braving a storm to get there. Mike’s Black solo is bluesy, yet wailing towards the speakers and has Ed crying out at the very end. Alive becomes interactive with Mike going right down into the front section and Ed catching gifts being thrown at them and climbing speakers and pointing to people. The lights go on and Mudhoney’s Mark Arm and Steve Turner join in for Kick Out The Jams. Ed teases the audience “they sometimes say leave them wanting more…well fuck that shit,” and acknowledges how they’re “fortunate to have these gatherings based on music” and jokes about a young fan with headphones on who is “probably listening to Katy Perry.” Ed wishes the crowd a “Happy Christmas and Happy New Year….until next time.”
