New Edition - The Culture Tour

With jodeci.

COVID RESTRICTIONS: Vaccination Cards or a Negative Test will   NOT  be required

Veteran R&B group New Edition headlines an iconic lineup along with special guest, Jodeci, the bad boys of R&B. The Culture Tour kicks off a 30-city tour February 2022 , in Columbus, Ga., with stops in Los Angeles, New York, New Edition’s hometown of Boston and a Saturday, March 12 date at Cincinnati's Heritage Bank Center. Tickets for the Cincinnati show go on sale this Friday, December 17 at 10:00am at Ticketmaster.com and the Heritage Bank Center Box Office.    In 1983, New Edition released their debut single Candy Girl off their self-titled album, hitting No.1 on the Billboard Hot Black Single Charts, jumping ahead of Michael Jackson’s Beat It. Since then, New Edition has released more than six studio albums, received multiple Soul Train and American Music Awards, and a Grammy Award nomination. In 2017, BET Network released their three-part Biopic: The New Edition Story , airing over three consecutive nights. The mini-series attracted 29 million total viewers. That same year, the network honored them with the BET Lifetime Achievement Award, recognizing the group as one of the innovators of R&B. They have remained one of the most influential R&B groups of the last 30 years and counting, catapulting the solo careers of Bobby Brown, Johnny Gill, and Ralph Tresvant, and Bell Biv DeVoe. Viewers experienced a sense of nostalgia during the American Music Awards in November 2021, when New Edition performed alongside 80’s boy band, New Kids on the Block. Often credited as the creators of the modern-day boy bands, New Edition will attract fans old and new. Starring all six members, Ronnie DeVoe, Bobby Brown, Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, Ralph Tresvant, and Johnny Gill, this is the group’s first tour in more than five years. Representing the sound that shaped 90s R&B, the iconic group Jodeci joins the tour as a special guest. The group debuted their first album, Forever My Lady , in 1991 and have sold more than 20 million records worldwide. They have been the soundtrack to many music lover’s most memorable moments for over 30 years with hit songs "Forever My Lady", "Stay", and "Come and Talk To Me" . After a several year hiatus the group has reunited and are ready to show fans why they reign supreme as one of the most iconic R&B groups of all time. In partnership with The Black Promoters Collective, a 100 percent Black-owned promotions company composed of veteran live entertainment promoters, The Culture Tour tickets go on sale to the general public Friday, Dec. 17, 10am local time. American Express® Card Members can purchase tickets in select markets before the general public beginning Tuesday, December 14 at 10am local time through Thursday, December 16 at 10pm local time. Story and photos

by Michael Mitchell

The group New Edition brought their 40th Legacy Tour to Cincinnati’s Heritage Bank Center on March 26 before a sold out crowd. The concert began with recording artists Tank who hit the stage and got the crown in the mood by taking off his shirt to his bare skin. Tank’s show lasted 25 minutes in what turned out be one of his best performances in Cincinnati.

But when Guy hit the stage, the party started for real, as producer/musician Teddy Riley and Brothers Aaron and Damion Hall kept the audience on their feet singing as if they were Guy’s background singers.

Guy covered 15 songs from their playlist from “Good Bye Baby,” “Jam,” “Let’s Chill,” to the “New Jack Swing.” The energy of their background dances were a great use the the large stage. With each member moving to the side of the stage, the audience has opportunities to snap photos.

The Harlem,  New York, group founded in 1987, makes me wonder why “what if” they had stayed together, as Guy broke for the second time in 1990. They could have been one of the greatest groups of all time.

The “Sweater” Keith Stewart followed a tough act, but this crowd welcomed him as one of their favorites.

Sweater came on with up beat hits like “I Want Her” and “Make You Sweat.”

At times the party slowed down with love ballads, such as “I’ll Give All Of My Love To You,” and “Make  It Last Forever.” These served the love birds, who were cuddled up in the audience.

Teddy Riley reappeared, performing songs from his “New Jack Swing” LP, with Keith Sweat joining him and the crowd taking to the aisles. This performance received a standing ovation.

As Teddy Riley said, “This party ain’t over,” and it wasn’t. With flashing lights and the music of their five-piece band, Ralph Tresvant, Ricky Bell, Ronnie DeVoe, Johnny Gill, Michael Bivins and Bobby Brown appeared from beneath the stage dressed in long, red coats, red hats, black sequined pants and black shirts and broke into one of their early hits, “If It Isn’t Love.” The original members came back to join Bobby to perform his 1990 release, “My, My, My.” Bell, Bis and Defoe also had their shot performing the 1989 hit, “Poison.”

The highlight of the light show for me was Ralph Tresvant serenading a young girl.

So, even after going their separate ways for 40 years,

New Edition’s music continues to let us see how great they were then and now.

New Edition are a band hailing from Boston, Massachusetts, United States who formed in 1978. Since their debut, they have released seven studio albums and are generally considered to be one of the world's first true boy-bands.

The group was formed by a group of five friends who all lived in the Orchard Park housing projects in Boston, Massachusetts. Bobby Brown, Michael Bivins, Ricky Bell, Travis Pettus and Corey Rackley all came together in 1978 and soon after their formation they were performing at local talent shows and anywhere else that would have them. Soon after their first live show they met Brooke Payne, a choreographer who was branching out into management. He saw something in the band so he had them audition for him a couple of days after first meeting them, and was so impressed with what he saw that he became their manager. He also named them New Edition as he saw them as an updated version of The Jackson 5, but it still wasn't enough for Rackley or Pettus.

They left the group shortly after it was named, but were shortly replaced by Ralph Tresvant and Ronnie DeVoe, respectively. Over the next couple of years, the band continued to perform live and make demos until their big break in 1982, where they were seen live by the singer/producer Maurice Starr. Starr was so impressed with the band that he took them into his personal recording studio and cut their debut album “Candy Girl” right there and then. The album was released in 1983, and it's title track was a big hit, topping the Billboard R&B Chart and the U.K singles chart (the first ever number one single in the U.K to contain rapping as well!).

While the band did get a big break thanks to Starr, it also turned out that Starr was meddling with their finances. Meaning that after a hugely successful nation-wide tour, the band each received a pay-check worth the princely sum of $1.87 for their efforts. The band parted ways with Starr and signed a record deal with MCA Records, leading to their commercial peak with their self-titled second album and its singles “Cool It Now” and “Mr. Telephone Man”. Ever since then, the band have remained a huge influence on modern R&B, as their hip-hop inflected chart pop paved the way for New Jack Swing acts like Boyz 2 Men. They're a band whose influence can be felt on the pop charts to this very day, and they remain an unmissable live act to boot. For that, they come highly recommended.

Live reviews

NEW EDITION (Ronnie, Bobby, Ricky, Mike, Ralph and Johnny) performed like they were in their 20's (AMAZING!). I was dancing the whole time and did not sit down once. It was the best concert I have been too in a very long time. I was singing along to every song (singles from Bobby, Ralph, Johnny, BBD and New Edition). You have to go see them -- I would go again... it's worth every penny! I love them because..."EVERY LITTLE STEP" I took made me realized that, I am "STILL IN LOVE" with them because they are "DOPE!" and they know how to "RUB YOU THE RIGHT WAY"; they are not "STONE COLD GENTLEMAN"! AWESOME CONCERT!

New Edition knows how to put on a show! No matter which one is your favorite, they each have their time to shine. They interact with the crowd and make you feel like you are the only one in attendance. Once you'be experienced a New Edition concert you will be hooked and want to see them again & again & again! Their shows are definitely worth every penny. They NEVER disappoint!

Man this show was great! Them boys from Boston and one from D.C. had us older folks groovin' and the balcony rocking....literally! It was like a NE mixtape. They came out together, then split off into singles and group, the back together again. It was a journey thru time as they started with 5, went to 4, then back to 5, and finally to all 6!!! #NE4Life #all6

The new edition concert was excellent . It had been 25 years since I saw them first, this show was stunning . Their presentation was for the fans. The men are in great shape with exception of BB, but he kept up. I will see them again when they are in the city. The venue was great, the DJ during intermission was kicking. Love, love.

New Edition to launch 2023 tour with Keith Sweat, Guy and Tank as guests

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

“The Legacy Tour” coincides with the 40th anniversary year of New Edition’s debut, “Candy Girl.”

New Edition will embark on a new tour in 2023 and will bring along some important guests. The R&B group announced that its “Legacy Tour” will have support from Keith Sweat , Guy and Tank.

The supergroup sextet of Ronnie DeVoe, Bobby Brown , Ricky Bell, Mike Bivins, Ralph Tresvant and Johnny Gill is scheduled to perform in 30 venues in only a two-month span next spring. From March 9 to April 30, the group will play Charlotte, North Carolina, Washington D.C., Newark, New Jersey, Chicago, Cincinnati, Atlanta, Las Vegas and other cities.

Sweat, a longtime collaborator of Riley and Gill, is behind R&B classics, including “Make It Last Forever,” “Make You Sweat,” “Twisted” and “Nobody.” Guy — the reunited New Jack Swing pioneers Teddy Riley, Aaron Hall and Damion Hall — are known for hits like “Groove Me,” “I Like,” “Let’s Chill” and “Piece of My Love.”

Tank expressed his excitement about touring with his R&B heroes in a video he tweeted on Wednesday. “After 22 years of hard work and dedication, it is an honor to open for those who paved the way.”

The “Please Don’t Go” singer starred in both “The New Edition Story” and “The Bobby Brown Story” BET miniseries, playing former MCA Records executive Jheryl Busby.

The Legacy Tour kicks off as New Edition celebrates the 40th anniversary of its debut album, 1983’s “Candy Girl.” That album launched the then-quintet into music stardom with hits like the title track, “Popcorn Love” and “Is This the End.”

The group announced its return to the road less than a year after wrapping the “Culture Tour ” earlier this year. It featured Charlie Wilson and special guest, Jodeci.

Tour tickets can be purchased via Ticketmaster . Pre-sales begin at 10 a.m. local time on Dec. 15, while general public tickets go on sell at 10 a.m. local time on Dec. 16.

New Edition, Maxwell, Fantasia, Ne-Yo & More Booked For The 2024 Cincinnati Music Festival

Butta

The Cincinnati Music Festival is making sure that they’re on the radars of music lovers for next summer. The annual event that has been a staple in Cincinnati, Ohio since 1962 will be returning in July 2024, and organizers have given us an early Christmas present by revealing a blockbuster roster of talent already scheduled.

The 2024 Cincinnati Music Festival is on and popping between Thursday, July 25, 2024 through Saturday, July 27, 2024. The festival boasts headliners New Edition and Maxwell among the first round of performers to be announced. After NE completes their New Edition Las Vegas residency in the spring, they’ve got Cincy on their summer itinerary with all six members – Ronnie DeVoe ,  Bobby Brown ,  Ricky Bell ,  Michael Bivins ,  Ralph Tresvant  and  Johnny Gill – on tap to perform. Maxwell, meanwhile, will embark on his Urban Hang Suite Cruise in February, and this festival date is thus far his only other performance on the books for next year.

While the complete lineup for the 2024 Cincinnati Music Festival is still being finalized, Thursday’s kickoff will be A Celebration Of Hip-Hop at the Brady Music Center. After celebrating the 50th anniversary of hip-hop during this past summer’s festival with a who’s who of legends such as Snoop Dogg , Slick Rick ,  Doug E. Fresh ,  Rakim  and  Big Daddy Kane , we suspect that whoever is booked next year will come correct.

After setting it off on the hip-hop tip, the festivities will move to Paycor Stadium for the remainder of the weekend. Taking the stage on Friday will be funk band Lakeside , soulful R&B singer October London , Golden Globe-nominated star of The Color Purple Fantasia , Ne-Yo and Maxwell who will close out the night.

Saturday will be the final day of the festival, and it will end strong. Performers include soul crooner Kem , ’90s R&B girl group faves SWV , former Mint Condition frontman Stokley , one more act to be announced and New Edition who will shut the night and the festival down.

While many music festivals are sending out notifications to save the date and putting tickets on sale before announcing a single performer, we appreciate the 2024 Cincinnati Music Festival for standing on business and getting their artist lineup out early. It’s not too early to start planning for Summer 2024, so lock in this festival on your calendar and lock down your tickets now.

Tickets are on pre-sale right now (with the code PRESALE) and will go on sale to the general public starting Saturday, December 16th at 10 a.m. ET via Ticketmaster . For more information, visit the Cincinnati Music Festival website .

Billionaire plans to take submersible to Titanic nearly one year after OceanGate implosion

new edition tour cincinnati ohio

Nearly one year after the OceanGate Titan submersible disaster gripped the nation, another ambitious businessman is looking to make the same trip.

Larry Connor, an Ohio businessman and billionaire , told The Wall Street Journal last week about his plans to prove that a dive to the Titanic wreckage site can be done safely when proper engineering is employed.

Shortly after news broke in June 2023 of the Titan's suspected implosion, Connor called up Triton Submarine's CEO Patrick Lahey, who had publicly criticized OceanGate's safety practices and called its CEO "predatory," and insisted they could and should make something better.

“[Connor said], you know, what we need to do is build a sub that can dive to [Titanic-level depths] repeatedly and safely and demonstrate to the world that you guys can do that, and that Titan was a contraption,’” Lahey told The Wall Street Journal.

Connor and Triton Subs did not immediately respond to request for comment.

Here's what we know so far about the newest Titanic-bound submersible.

Who is Larry Connor?

Larry Connor is an entrepreneur and founder of The Connor Group , a luxury real estate company based in Dayton, Ohio. His net worth is $2 billion, according to  Forbes , while Connor Group’s real estate portfolio is worth $5 billion.

Connor is a known explorer, having previously voyaged to the  Mariana Trench  and  International Space Station , told news outlets he wants to prove that a deep-sea submersible can be made safely and such a trip can be done "without disaster."

“I want to show people worldwide that while the ocean is extremely powerful, it can be wonderful and enjoyable and really kind of life-changing if you go about it the right way,” Connor told The Wall Street Journal.

The date of the intended dive has not yet been announced.

Triton Submarines' $20 million submersible

Connor told the Wall Street Journal he would be working with Triton Submarines, a company that builds submersibles for sea exploration at various depths.

The trip will use the Triton 4000/2 "Abyss Explorer." With a $20 million price tag, the two-person craft is described on the Triton website as “the world’s deepest diving acrylic sub," boasting the ability to descend over 13,000 feet (4,000 meters).

Lahey, the CEO, co-founded Triton with the now-retired Bruce Jones, the former of whom plans to accompany Connor on his mission, the Wall Street Journal reported.

“Patrick has been thinking about and designing this for over a decade," Connor told the outlet. "But we didn’t have the materials and technology. You couldn’t have built this sub five years ago.”

What happened to the OceanGate Titan submersible?

On June 18, 2023, five people boarded a submersible created by the company OceanGate to visit the Titanic wreckage site 12,500 feet (3,800 meters) under the water.

This was OceanGate Expeditions' third annual voyage to the site, and each passenger paid $250,000 for the opportunity to view the wreckage, according to an archived itinerary of the mission.

Aboard the submersible was British businessman Hamish Harding; Shahzada Dawood and his son Suleman, members of one of Pakistan's most prominent families; French explorer and Titanic expert Paul-Henry Nargeolet; and OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush.

The vessel was heavily scrutinized before departure for its design, made of carbon fiber and titanium and measured in at about 9 feet high, 8 feet tall, and 22 feet wide. The craft was said to have been piloted with a video game controller .

The submersible was not up to the task and imploded on its way down to the ocean floor. Communication between the Titan and its mothership stopped about 90 minutes into the trip. It is assumed the destruction of the vessel happened soon after.

A massive rescue mission ensued . Ultimately, The Titan's debris were found in five large parts on the sea floor about 1,600 feet from the Titanic's bow and the passengers were declared officially lost on June 22. Some human remains were later recovered.

Meet Tiny Desk Concert finalist Sally Baby

SCOTT SIMON, HOST:

NPR's Tiny Desk Contest has had a good number of submissions this year, all hoping for a chance at Tiny Desk fame. Here's one of them.

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "I GOT NO MORE TEARS LEFT TO CRY")

SAL GELOSO: (Singing) I got no more tears left to cry. Ain't nobody's fool but my own.

SIMON: Sal Geloso was the creative force behind Sally Baby's Silver Dollars. Singing, writing and playing guitar, the band is thoroughly New Orleans. But Geloso told us that he came up with this song in New York City. He was there during the pandemic, visiting family and performing to small crowds.

GELOSO: And so I was just kind of scribing away in my book, and I really wrote the lyrics then because I was feeling a little bit down and just thinking just about the overall sentiment of the times. It wouldn't be till later in 2022 that I would write the music and kind of put the lyrics with the chords.

SIMON: The result - "I Got No More Tears Left To Cry," and it sounds like a New Orleans classic.

GELOSO: (Singing) I got no more tears left to cry.

I had some lover issues at the time and feeling kind of regretful about things. But also, I keep tripping myself up, allowing myself to go through these losses or, you know, be frustrated at things, and I kept hearing that line. Like, I have no more tears left to cry. Ain't nobody's fool but my own, and then I had to, like, it felt like it was, like, is this a song? Like, this just seems like this is something that is just kind of eternal.

GELOSO: (Singing) Oh, Minotaur waits behind this open door.

You know, I'm a cryer. I love to cry. I feel like it's good. You've got to let it out one way or another. But I kind of wanted to put it on me instead of other people because, you know, we've all got the power to dig ourselves out of whatever bad situation it - may befall on us.

GELOSO: (Singing) His legs wrapped around a hollow life.

SIMON: Sal Geloso has lived in New Orleans for 16 years and knows the city's music has influenced his own sound.

GELOSO: Having the horns and piano, it lays, like, such a - almost like a bed of roses for you to just kind of wail and sing over. This song is definitely inspired by a lot of '50s and '60s New Orleans rhythm and blues. That melody, that horn line - it was etched into my head, so I was like, I've got to write something that is kind of just reminiscent of these old tunes. And, you know, they all deal with heartbreak and tears on my pillow and pining over a lover.

GELOSO: (Singing) Oh, you left me hanging on.

SIMON: Now, when it came time to film his Tiny Desk Contest submission, Sal Geloso decided to play this song on the sidewalk right in front of his house.

GELOSO: And I didn't realize that we were, like, potentially disqualifying ourselves for the competition 'cause I forgot to read in the fine print there that you can't have any bystanders here, but we - I swear to you, we did not plan that at all. Literally, 'cause it's New Orleans, you know, you literally step outside and start getting something together, and then everybody starts popping out of their house. So, literally, everybody came out of their house. And all of a sudden, before I knew it, it was literally we had a block party going on (laughter).

GELOSO: Ooh, I've got no more tears left to cry. Cry.

People get chosen by New Orleans. I feel like, you know, this city has a way of just expelling people, destroy your life, sometimes, or it will bless you (laughter). So I feel grateful to be one of the people that have gotten blessed even through the hardships that this place can impose upon some. I feel like I've been lucky to really come into my own here and be able to play this incredible New Orleans music.

GELOSO: (Singing) Ain't nobody's fool but my own. Ooh, and I can't be a clown no more and wonder why. Oh, I got no more tears left to cry.

SIMON: Sal Geloso and the band Sally Baby's Silver Dollars. Their Tiny Desk Contest submission is called "I Got No More Tears Left To Cry."

GELOSO: (Singing) Behind this open door. Transcript provided by NPR, Copyright NPR.
