"A well-informed, engaging and entertaining tour and narration of the evolution of Glasgow music and its characters. Have been on the Merchant City Tour twice with friends visiting from the US - it's been a highlight of their trips both times. The passionate guides are embedded in the music scene of the city so guests get the lowdown from the inside. Highly recommend this experience."

"A great city walking tour , with lots of info, amusing stories and interesting locations in the city's east end. A particular highlight was an unexpected visit to the Britannia Panopticon Music Hall which was just amazing to see....like stepping back in time! Our guide for the tour was excellent...very well informed and very entertaining. Highly recommended."

"A really excellent day out. Despite the constant downpour, it was a pleasure doing the 2 hour stroll through the streets with Alison. A very knowledgeable lady indeed. Fascinating to hear her stories (and those of our fellow walkers) and great to find some little gems of musical establishments we would normally have walked right past. Highly recommended."

"Really enjoyed the tour - great way to spend a couple of hours on a Saturday morning. Fiona the guide was excellent. Extremely knowledgeable, very enthusiastic and is deeply immersed in the Scottish music scene with great anecdotes and first hand experiences. Highly recommend the tour. Just listening to the spotify list shared after the tour which is a great bonus!"

"Two hours of fantastic information, stories and places to visit. Starting at the Clutha we had 2 hours of diverse information from Billy Connolly to Bowie and Franz Ferdinand to funny stories in the Panopticon. Fiona was a terrific guide who is obviously immersed in the Glasgow music scene. Lots of nice additional personal experiences. Loved it!"

Will ye no come back again? – Robbie Burns

Join Jennifer & Stewart on this rollicking musical adventure through the Isles, Highlands and Lowlands of Scotland along with a couple of nights in the English Lakes district on the way.

As we work at planning this exciting tour, we’ve wonderful hotels, locations and activities already in place. We’re going to do so and enjoy the extensive grounds and woodland walks to boot!

Our first base is the Capital, Edinburgh where we take several days to explore and immerse ourselves in this lively and quite urbane city… Its spectacular castle on the hill and the view over ‘Edi’ from Arthur’s seat are must sees but there will be many more unique visits and places to savour, including a Traditional Scottish evening of entertainment. Raven Sinclaire's Traceless Tours

April, 2021

Note this is a Sample Itinerary: Hotels and routes may change. You'll be emailed the final itinerary one month before departure, but even then we always leave space for the unexpected finds and last minute discoveries!

Internationally recognized singer-songwriter  Janet Feld   joins Raven Sinclaire for a tour of history, intrigue and MUSIC! During our ten days together, we will experience breathtaking scenery, castles, museums and ancient historical sites during the day and live music at night, including some special private concerts.

Your tour includes stays in 4-star eco-friendly hotels when available, breakfast every day and 4 group dinners. Here's our tentative itinerary. The finalized tour may vary slightly and will be emailed to all participants closer to time:

Days 1-3: Fly into Edinburgh, rest for awhile or meander the Royal Mile before meeting for a group dinner. Our first three days and nights will be spent in Edinburgh, seeing the sights around the gothic capital city of Scotland, including a visit to nearby Rosslyn Chapel and Glen. During our stay in the city, you may choose to meander through storybook neighborhoods and mysterious wynds and closes (narrow walking paths off of the streets) and hear some of the fascinating history that spans generations. You'll have a chance to explore the Royal Mile, museums and historical monuments while enjoying sights, sounds and tastes that are sure to be memorable. In the evenings, we will gather for great Scottish music and perhaps sample a single malt or two. Our home in Edinburgh will be the Radisson Blu Hotel in the City Centre.

Day 4-6: We travel to Pitlochry, the heart of Scotland, where we will take short day trips. Raven will share some of the dramatic history that has spawned legends such as William Wallace, Robert the Bruce, and Mary Queen of Scots while visiting sites such as Dunkeld Cathedral, Blair Atholl Distillery, the Pictish Dunfallandy stone and bronze age Crannog in Loch Tay, and 'Birnam Woods' mentioned in Shakespeare's famous Scottish Play. In the evenings, we will journey to local pubs for more live music. Our three night home in Pitlochry will be Fishers Hotel . Note: Some tours will stay in Dunkeld rather than Pitlochry on this middle leg of the journey, depending on availability. Dunkeld is a quaint and less touristy village but with big music roots.

Day 7-9: We travel to Inverness, known as the ‘Highland Capital’, though it still retains its market town feel. We will visit ancient Clava Cairns, Urquhart Castle, and other local treasures. We will host a world class musician for a private hotel concert and visit iconic pubs, MacGregor's and Hootenanny's for more music. Our hotel home will be Lochardil House.

Why you'll love Scotland

music tours scotland

Epic tales and terrific traditions

Scotland is the birthplace of Sherlock Holmes, the television, and whisky. So, the culture is a mix of poetry, intellect, and fun. The locals also love showing visitors a good time. So don’t be surprised when you’re invited to a Highland dance or regaled with folk tales at the local pub.

Famed beauty

Scotland’s landscapes are more dramatic than a superhero movie, more beautiful than a three carat diamond, and older than any of your grandparents’ stories. From blonde beaches to serene mountains: you’ll discover the scenery lives up to its reputation.

A trove of secrets

It’s no secret Scotland has fascinating history. But what’s less known, is how much of it’s shrouded in mystery. There are unexplained standing stones, untranslatable hieroglyphics, and unbelievable myths. So, keep your eyes peeled, your mind open, and your imagination switched on.

Natural flavours

Everyone wants a slice of Scotland’s local larder. The seafood is exported to the best restaurants, Angus beef is enjoyed everywhere, and whisky is loved worldwide. And although these flavours travel far, there’s no place it tastes better than in Scotland.

The final show...

On 4 March 2023, Music Show Scotland could be seen for the very last time in Rotterdam Ahoy. Music Show Scotland stops touring after more than 15 years.

New plans have emerged for the organizer of Music Show Scotland. Beerten Events is planning to build its own concert hall in Borculo, the home town of the Music Show Scotland. The grandstands in the concert hall must accommodate more than 3000 visitors and other music productions can also take place. The concert hall will take the form of an event center and will be named “the Castle”. Preparations are now in full swing and the organization has had to make the choice to stop producing the show in its current form from 2023.

More than 15 years ago, the Highland Valley Pipes & Drums from Borculo came up with the idea of organizing a Celtic night in Borculo together with an orchestra, a choir and an Irish dance group. Due to the great success of this concept, production continued under the name "Music Show Scotland". Back then it was still a dream to be in a sold-out large arena.

15 years have passed and the Music Show Scotland has undergone a stormy development. From the sports hall ’t Timpke in small Borculo to Rotterdam Ahoy and the GelreDome in Arnhem to several beautiful arenas in Europe. Shows in the Hallenstadion in Zurich (Switzerland), in the JyskeBank Boxen in Herning (Denmark), in the Mercedes Benz Arena in Berlin and in the Sportpaleis Antwerp (Belgium) are now part of the annual tour schedule. The cast grew to over 300 pipers, drummers, musicians, dancers and crew members. And everything is organized from A to Z by Beerten Events from Borculo, where it started out small. A huge production that was worked on with great passion. The dream came true.

Now, after 15 years, new plans for the Music Show Scotland have emerged. Beerten Events wants to build its own concert hall in Borculo, home of the Music Show Scotland. The grandstands in the concert hall will accommodate more than 3000 visitors and other music productions will also be able to take place there. The concert hall is in the form of an event center and will be called "The Castle". Preparations are in full swing and the organization had to make the decision to temporarily stop the production of the show in its current form from 2023 onwards. Scotland’s music on tour

Scottish Government launch touring fund for live music.

Musicians, bands, artists and venues will be able to apply to a £750,000 Scottish Government fund to bring new and additional concerts to venues and festivals in Scotland next year.

Scotland on Tour will support the staging of concerts across the whole nation from between January 2022 and January 2023.

Funded by Scottish Government and organised by Active Events, its decision making panel includes representatives from across the music industry, as well as Creative Scotland, Scottish Enterprise, Highlands and Islands Enterprise, XpoNorth and South of Scotland Enterprise.

Participating artists, venues and festivals will be announced later this year.

Culture Minister Jenny Gilruth said:

“Due to the impact of COVID-19, I know many concerts from 2020 and 2021 have been postponed – leaving little opportunity for artists to perform new concerts in traditional venues or concert halls up until late 2022, or even spring 2023.

“So I am very pleased to announce Scotland on Tour, a fund to help artists, venues and the wider music industry by creating new concert opportunities across Scotland next year.

“The fund is not only an exciting opportunity for artists and venues, but also for Scottish audiences, who will have the chance to see the best of Scottish music right on their doorstep.”

Director of Active Events Lisa Whytock said:

“The past 18 months have been exceptionally challenging for musicians and promoters around Scotland.

“This fund will allow new concerts from professional musicians to take place across the country, bringing world class performances to cities, towns and local communities whilst simultaneously supporting production companies and skilled freelancers in their delivery.

“We are extremely excited about the project and would like to wholeheartedly thank the Scottish Government for their investment.”

Head of Music at Creative Scotland, Alan Morrison, said:

“At the height of the pandemic, Active Events applied to Creative Scotland’s Open Fund for a research project that would identify community partners and increase touring opportunities for musicians when restrictions finally lifted.

“This bold vision for recovery has blossomed into a new touring fund, supported by the Scottish Government, that will breathe life back into the live music sector across the entire country.

“It’s extremely encouraging to see how a seed that was sown in darker times is growing into a major year-long programme that will bring music fans and professional artists of all genres back together again.”

The Scottish Government committed to establishing a Touring Fund for Theatre and Music within the first 100 days of the current administration.

Active Events were funded via Creative Scotland’s Open Fund to carry out a research and development project looking into the impact of COVID-19 on touring networks in Scotland - following this research and the development of the resulting proposal, Active Events were provided with the opportunity to deliver the Scotland on Tour project by Scottish Government.

Active Events and the Scotland on Tour initiative are supported by a steering group that has representation from industry including the Scottish Music Industry Association, the Touring Network, Creative Scotland, Enterprise agencies and the Edinburgh Fringe Society.

Further details will be announced soon as to how artists and venues can apply to the Scotland on Tour fund, which is expected to open for applications in October 2021.  Registrations of interest to the fund can be recorded by sending an email   to [email protected]

Applications from artists applying to take part in the Scotland on Tour fund will be assessed by a decision-making panel. This panel will be formed of music industry representatives and Creative Scotland representatives. Promoters, venues and festivals will also be required to complete an application form which will be assessed by the panel.

Scottish New Music Round-up: September 2024

Summer is over and september is overwhelming for new scottish music. we celebrate releases from hen hoose, joe hearty, lusa, zerrin and more.

Joe Hearty

There's so much happening this month, we've no space to tell you what we missed last month, soz. Across the website you’ll find complete thoughts on new September releases from Nina Nesbitt and Gurry Wurry , while the posthumous album from SOPHIE is honoured in the September issue. Below, I’ll cover as much of everything else as I can, which, dear reader, is A LOT!

A real treat to help kick off the autumn season is EP2 from songwriting collective Hen Hoose . Due on 5 September, it’s the second release in a three-part series that features collaborative works from Karine Polwart and The Anchoress, Susan Bear and Jill Lorean, and Nightwave and SHEARS among others. The following day, there's a lot coming out.  Joe Hearty – formerly of Stonehaven’s finest, Copy Haho – releases his brand new EP, Antenna . Calling to mind artists like Jens Lekman, jaunty piano lines, bright synths, and strings are perfectly paired with Hearty’s rich timbre as he “explores the embodied experience of navigating queer life” across its seven tracks.

LUSA is the new project from Niteworks’ Innes Strachan. Alongside Beth Malcolm, Donald Macdonald and Ruairidh Graham, the quartet release their debut album, The Colour of Space . A sidestep from the Gaelic-electro of Niteworks, but its influence can still be heard on this record that explores different nooks and crannies of dance music, still sounding very much rooted in Scotland.

It’s hard to ignore a record that includes your namesake in its tracklist (hello Talla Reservoir!), and so we haven’t. The debut instrumental album from guitarist Christopher Haddow , An Unexpected Giant Leap is a real work of depth and beauty, and a masterclass in spaciousness and shapeshifting. Due via Errol’s Hot Wax, it’s chock-full of surprising left turns; the way the title track flickers, blips and swells is bliss.  Open Wider the Door from Boab is similarly surprising. The new solo project from Sweaty Palms frontman Robbie Houston sees technical precision take a backseat to raw emotion for a record of true vulnerability and introspection. Filled with lots of interesting flourishes, and deeply affecting moments, it's guaranteed you’ve never heard Houston sound like this before.

Still on the 6th, led by Czech-born guitarist-composer Honza Kourimsky, Edinburgh jazz outfit Mahuki release their debut album Gratitude  (Bridge the Gap), Broken Records frontman Jamie Sutherland releases his second solo album, the deeply personal  The World As It Used To Be  (Frictionless Records), and Glasgow singer-songwriter Murdo Mitchell releases  Cheap Hotels  (Drabant / Sony Music Norway).

music tours scotland

From one solo project to another, on 13 September Damn Teeth and Thin Privilege frontman Paul McArthur releases his self-titled debut solo record as  Praise Team . Inspired by memory and growing up on the west coast of Scotland,  Praise Team  (Diminishing Returns Records) is an accomplished record of intrigue, written and constructed on the hoof in the studio, with McArthur on every instrument.  Leave No Shadow , the debut solo record from Modern Studies’ Emily Scott as Chrysanths also arrives 13 Sep on Chemikal Underground. Swirling string arrangements, meandering drums, delicate, twisting piano lines and Scott’s crystalline voice come together like a romantic daydream, albeit one built in reality where sadness also has its place.

For a mostly instrumental record,  Proximity Mantra , the debut from  The New Human  (Bricolage), also manages to convey a lot of emotion and heart across its ten tracks, very much rooted in the nostalgia of 90s and 00s IDM. Fresh from a move to Edinburgh from the States, indie-pop artist Alas de Liona  is introspective on the Rod Jones-produced  Gravity of Gold . There’s the debut self-titled record from Martin John Henry's new project  Jewel Scheme  (Gargleblast), and Lost Map’s Pictish Trail releases  Follow Footsteps  featuring Summer Redux versions of three tracks from 2022’s Island Family .

18 September brings us Talking to Myself , the latest chamber pop-indebted EP from Glasgow-based Australian musician Zerrin . There’s a level of intimacy to Zerrin’s music; similar to the way Mitski pulls you in closer, so too does Zerrin. With astonishing control, these four tracks cautiously duck and dive, soar and twist as she tackles topics like self-preservation and grief with meticulous precision.

The end of the month brings the debut album Umbelliferæ (27 Sep) from composer and songwriter Kate Young . Beginning its life as a commission for Celtic Connections, the record is inspired by plantlore and the ancient medicinal uses of wildflowers in the British Isles. Its 12 tracks were guided by Young’s chromesthesia, where she can experience colour in sound, making for a unique collage of style as, alongside a string quartet, she traverses chamber music, folk, indie-pop and even Bulgarian folk song.

Other releases to look out for this month include Astrid WIlliamson ’s Shetland Suite (Incarnation Records) and Erland Cooper ’s Carve the Runes Then Be Content With Silence (Mercury KX/Decca), both due on 20 September. Morven and the McArdles ’ Red & Black EP arrives on the 22nd, while  strobe light specimens from Edinburgh-based "queer club chameleon"  sweet philly (Paradise Palms Records) is due on the 27th. There are also new singles from Katherine Aly , Moni Jitchell , Theo Bleak , Josephine Sillars , Thundermoon , Saint Sappho , Possibly Jamie , NATI. and Constant Follower to name but a few, and we’re sure a lot more will come to light as the month rolls on.

Amazon Music make plea to Oasis with huge Times Square billboard

Amazon Music have made a plea to Oasis with a giant billboard in New York City’s Times Square .

The band announced a reunion tour last week, with tickets for dates in Dublin, London, Manchester, Cardiff and Scotland going on sale over the weekend.

A worldwide tour has been speculated, but not announced.

Further rumours were sparked on Monday 2 September, with Amazon Music sending a message to Noel and Liam Gallagher from Times Square.

“If we need to put up a billboard to get these guys to come to the States, here it is,” the message read.

Oasis shared footage of the billboard on their Instagram account, captioning it with the eyes emoji.
