Is mui ne worth visiting & best mui ne itinerary (2024).

Check out my favorite 2 days in Mui Ne itinerary and find out is Mui Ne worth a visit. Take your adventures in Vietnam to the next level by finding out the top things to do, places to eat, where to stay, and more while you are backpacking Mui Ne!

Located on the Southeast coast of Vietnam you can find the small seaside town of Mui Ne. Though contrary to its size, this place has well and truly earned its place on the banana pancake backpacking trail.

Known for its incredible landscapes there is not anywhere else like it in this country. However what exactly is there to do in Mui Ne and is it really worth visiting on your Vietnam adventures?

Luckily I have spent quite some time backpacking Vietnam visiting many places including Mui Ne. While there I decided to visit the absolute best parts of it to decide whether it was worth a visit.

Think huge sand dunes with impressive views over the ocean, small village vibes, affordable accommodation, and food, as well as nearby beaches to visit.

Nevertheless, let’s get into this travel guide and itinerary with all you need to know for the best time while in Mui Ne.

Ultimate Backpacking Guide To Mui Ne & Best Itinerary

Need A Quick Answer?

If you perhaps don’t have time to read this entire guide, no worries, here are the top tips:

🏖️ Easiest & Best Way to Explore The Highlights: I recommend booking a sunrise or sunset jeep tour for $23.00 per person. Book now with Viator .

🏠 Where to Stay: Top hostel choices for backpackers include iHome Backpackers Resort (dorms start from $7.00) and Mui Ne Hills Backpackers (dorms start from $4.00)

🚗 Transport From Ho Chi Minh City To Mui Ne: Take a luxury sleeper bus and arrive refreshed. Book now with GetYourGuide .

🍜 For Foodies: Take a food tour where you can buy some of the best local delights. Book now with Viator .

Is Mui Ne Worth Visiting?

Honestly, I do believe Mui Ne is worth adding to your Vietnam Itinerary . The landscapes here are unlike anything else you will find in the country and is quite a unique experience.

However, in saying this you don’t need to spend long here. There are some highlights worth checking out, but they can all be ticked off in one day.

I also didn’t find the beaches here overly spectacular so I would just visit the Red Sand Dunes, White Sand Dunes, and Fairy Stream, then move on.

How Many Days To Spend In Mui Ne

Mui Ne was actually one of the few places where I definitely spent too long while backpacking around Vietnam .

Yes, you still should go, though you do not need to spend as long here as you would in other places in Vietnam.

Overall I would try to spend 3 nights in each location so I can get a good vibe for the place and explore some of the best things there.

Though here you only need 1 night or 2 nights at most.

I know this may not seem like long, but I found so many backpackers here were also doing this. You can easily do a morning tour of the best sites and spend the rest of the time relaxing.

Perhaps you would like to spend longer if you can afford a nice beachfront resort, though unfortunately, my hostel did not cut the mustard. Nevertheless, there was a good party vibe for just $5.00 per night.

the contrast between the orange cliffs and green jungle on the fairy stream, a must explore on your 2 days in mui ne itinerary

How To Plan A Mui Ne Itinerary

When it comes to your Itinerary you do have a couple of options as to getting to and visiting this seaside town:

Independent travel: You can find numerous buses and trains traveling from Ho Chi Minh City or Nha Trang to Mui Ne so it is pretty damn easy to book it yourself over on 12 Go Asia . Once in Mui Ne, you can easily find hostels and guesthouses.

Organized tours: There are a small number of organized tours from Ho Chi Minh City that will take you to Mui Ne. These will include accommodation and a tour of the highlights. Some of these tours are just day trips while others are overnight.

Recommended Tours:

Day Trip: Take a day trip to Mui Ne from Ho Chi Minh City , the perfect option if you are short on time. Enjoy a day where everything is taken care of for you while you enjoy checking out the highlights.

Overnight Trip: Spend 2 days 1 night in Mui Ne from Ho Chi Minh City . Enjoy relaxing at a 4 star beach resort with breakfast and lunch included.

Transport ONLY: Book a comfortable and luxurious sleeper bus from Ho Chi Minh City to Mui Ne . Relax in your own pod style bed and arrive right at your accommodation in Mui Ne.

Day 1: Explore The Outskirts

Welcome to Mui Ne! On our first day, we will take things a bit slower as we explore what exactly the town has to offer.

I have left this day relatively open, and not doing the absolute best things. This is simply because you can arrive at whatever time from your previous destination and don’t have to rush about the first morning.

We will do the best things on our second day before departing in the afternoon.

Morning: Po Shanu Cham Towers

Before we start exploring it is time to grab some breakfast to fuel you for the day. The Brunch Bar Mui Ne is a great breakfast spot with super affordable prices. You can’t go wrong when a delicious egg benedict costs $2.60!

Now you are ready to explore and prepare yourself for the Po Shanu Cham Towers . However, they aren’t in the main touristy area, and instead are slightly out of town between Mui Ne and Phan Thiet.

To visit I recommend booking a taxi which will cost you between $10.00 to $15.00 each way. To prevent getting ripped off use Grab in Vietnam, it’s basically the Uber of Southeast Asia. The journey will take you about 15 minutes and then you will arrive.

Like a lot of towers of the Cham religion here in Vietnam, the Po Shanu Cham Towers are located on top of a hill. Similar to My Son in Hoi An , they are from the time of the Champa empire. They were built in the 8th century from the bright red bricks.

This is an excellent place to relax, feel the breeze on your face, and learn a bit about the history here. After about an hour of exploring you will likely be ready to head off.

Entry Fee: 10,000 VND / $0.40

Afternoon: Ta Cu Mountain Or Beach Chilling

Now for the afternoon, I will give you the choice of 2 different activities that you can do.

This is simply because visiting Ta Cu Mountain can be a bit pricey, and you will be spending a bit of time in vehicles, which isn’t fun if you have taken a 5-hour bus from Ho Chi Minh or Nha Trang to Mui Ne that same day.

Though I will explain how it can be done a bit more on a budget, anyway the beach is a fun and relaxing alternative.

But, before you get exploring time to grab a delicious lunch!

If you are a vege like me why not head to El Cafe Vegetarian/Vegan Food . This is the best vegan and vegetarian-friendly spot and is well worth checking out.

Alternatively, you can grab a delicious meal at Sindbad Mui Ne . This was one of our go-to spots as we were actually staying next door, though it is one of the highest-rated restaurants here in Mui Ne. It is locally run and prices are super affordable for the backpacker crowd.

Option 1: Ta Cu Mountain

First off you will need to actually get to Ta Cu Mountain. You can either take a taxi, which will cost you around $40.00 for the 40-minute journey, otherwise, public transport is the other option.

To use public transport you will want to catch the bus going to Thuan Nam City, and then jump off at the large shopping mall.

Next up you will want to catch bus number 1 or 4 heading to Ta Cu mountain. You will know when you arrive thanks to the impressive shiny gates at the entrance.

Here at Ta Cu Mountain, you can see Buddhist statues, pagodas, and a huge reclining Buddha, which is the biggest one in Vietnam.

You will need to get from the gate to the top of the mountain. If you are not on too much of a budget you can take the cable car for some impressive views. Though this will cost you 160,000 VND / $6.50 roundtrip.

If you are keen to save your money you can hike up, but remember to bring plenty of water. It is a pretty steep climb, though you do not have to be crazy fit to complete it, standard fitness will be fine.

Just be careful on the way down depending on the weather, as if it has rained recently it can be a bit muddy and slippery.

Entry Fee: 20,000 VND / $0.80

Location: Tà Cú Mountain, Thuận Nam, Hàm Thuận Nam District, Bình Thuận Province, Vietnam

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Central Vietnam Guide x Hoian Day Trip (@centralvietnamguide)

Option 2: Beach Chilling

Now for more of a budget-friendly activity, why not hit the beach while you are in Mui Ne!? Now what I will say is check the tides.

High tide basically comes right up to the buildings on that side of the road.

Surprisingly the buildings and the beach are super close together so some resorts have created an artificial beach separated from the tides with a retaining wall. These should be fine no matter the tides.

If you are staying in a beachfront hotel or backpackers go you! You have already avoided my first mistake!

I presumed the beach would be easy to access like most places in the world. Unfortunately, the buildings on the beachside are so built up and commercialized there aren’t many public spaces, and they can be a bit on the dirty side.

So from here, you will either need to taxi a little bit out (just ask the driver and they will be able to take you somewhere appropriate), otherwise do a sneaky into a resort/beach club/ restaurant. Most of the time they are more than happy if you buy a drink or some food anyway.

enjoying life on the beach in mui ne

Evening: Sunset On The Beach

In the evening I highly recommend grabbing a delicious cocktail and watching the beautiful sunset. There are numerous beachfront restaurants and bars along the main strip so just go for a walk and see what tickles your fancy.

If you are super keen there are a heap of restaurants where you can pick your own fresh seafood out of a tank and the chefs will cook it up on a BBQ.

Though warning you now, the assortment of animals on display to eat was certainly a surprise. However, don’t stay out too late as we have a sunrise tour tomorrow.

Day 2: Main Highlights Of Mui Ne

It is an early start on our second day of the Mui Ne Itinerary, though trust me it is worth it.

Today we will do a sunrise tour to the best attractions in town. Yes, we will be visiting the white sand dunes, the red sand dunes, the fishing village, and finally fairy stream.

Booking A Sunrise Tour

Now let’s get into booking a sunrise tour and why this is the best way to see the sights. Walking down the street you will see all the hotels, travel agencies, and even restaurants, advertising this tour.

Sure it is an early wake-up time with your pick up somewhere between 4.30 am and 5.30 am, but trust me it is worth it.

My preferred tour is the Mui Ne Sand Dunes Jeep Tour where you can either book a private jeep or a shared sunrise/sunset jeep starting from just $18.00 per person. You will visit all the highlights and have a fantastic time.

That early start allows you to see the sunrise over the impressive white sand dunes. For the price, we shared a jeep with other people staying at our accommodation.

Just remember if you get quite a motion sick if you haven’t eaten, make sure to pack something the night before. There will be a small number of options available at each stop, but unfortunately, pringles are not the best breakfast.

White Sand Dunes

The first stop on your tour will be the White Sand Dunes to watch the sunrise. This will no doubt be one of your highlights here as it was mine.

You can either pay a jeep to take you out or hire an ATV. Though for both these options prepare to get stuck, as we saw this numerous times. Your best bet will be hiring an ATV with the most horsepower, just prepare to pay more.

Instead, if you are on a budget like I happened to be you can simply walk out to the dunes from the car park. It is a nice stroll and since it is the morning the heat of the day hasn’t started yet.

The white sand dunes are large enough that you can find your own little private spot to watch the sunrise and get away from the rest of the crowds.

watching the sunrise over the white sand dunes in mui ne

The Fishing Village

Surprisingly enough the fishing village was also a highlight for me on the sunrise tour.

I mean sure it doesn’t sound fun or interesting, and in all honesty, it was quite smelly, but I thought it was awesome seeing the fisherman pull in their catch.

You can also see all the brightly colored fishing boats bobbing around in the water.

watching locals doing their work at the fishing village in mui ne

Red Sand Dunes

The third stop of the day is the famous red sand dunes. These are a lot more touristy than the white sand dunes simply because they back right onto the road, literally.

This means you can often find large tour buses here, whereas, in the white sand dunes, you need a 4WD vehicle to access without getting stuck.

Though trust me it is still worth it! Here you can hire a sandboard and fly down the dunes. Just make sure to agree on a price beforehand, this is how some people make a living.

the red sand dunes in mui ne

Fairy Stream

The last spot on the tour is the popular Fairy Stream. This is actually a really nice walk upstream to a waterfall.

However, my favorite part was the colors. It was so incredible seeing these bright orange sand cliffs contrast against the greenery and blue sky.

Depending on the time of year you visit will affect how much water is in the stream and what the waterfall is like at the end.

I visited in the dry season when the water was ankle-deep and the waterfall was just a trickle.

2 days in mui ne itinerary 7

Afternoon: Leaving Mui Ne

After the sunrise tour, you can either head back to your accommodation and get a couple more hours of sleep or grab yourself a delicious breakfast. I Cafe Mui Ne is an excellent spot to come for a quick bite.

Here you are able to get a full English breakfast for just a few dollars. The perfect way to fuel yourself after a busy morning of exploring.

That afternoon I recommend packing up and heading to your next destination. From Mui Ne there are a few spots that I recommend traveling to next:

North: If you are keen to travel North from Mui Ne, you can take a train to Nha Trang and then up to Hoi An .

Continuing north again you have Hue with the Imperial City and then Hanoi right up the top of the country.

Hanoi is a great international hub, where you can head to Thailand or Laos , or instead, you can stay local by hitting up Sapa or Ha Long Bay. Also, there is Ninh Binh between Hanoi and Hue. I haven’t had the opportunity to visit yet, but I will on my next trip!

South: If you want you can head South towards Ho Chi Minh City and visit the Cu Chi Tunnels .

Travel Tips For Your Time In Mui Ne

Now you have read my 2 days in Mui Ne guide I will let you know my top travel tips to take your backpacking adventures to the next level!

Other Things To Do In Mui Ne

Apart from those things listed above, there are still even more things to do in Mui Ne :

Kite Surfing: There are numerous opportunities to go kite surfing and you will see stores advertising it as you walk alongside the main strip. It is a little more on the pricey side, though compared to doing this somewhere like Europe, prices here are a bargain!

Ke Ga Lighthouse: Ke Ga Lighthouse is the oldest one in Southeast Asia, having been built in 1897. You can find it South of Mui Ne and there is an excellent viewpoint from the rocks on the shoreline.

How To Get To Mui Ne

Depending on which direction you are traveling around Vietnam will affect what way you are coming to Mui Ne. Though it is likely you will either be traveling from the North or South.

Personally, I was traveling from nabove and made my way from Nha Trang to Mui Ne .

Tickets for all journeys can be purchased on Baolau (best for trains) or 12.Go Asia (best for buses)

Bus : The trip from Nha Trang to Mui Ne takes 5 hours.

Plane : It is currently not possible to fly.

Private Transfer: Private transfers are your quickest way and take 3 hours. However, prepare to open your wallet as it is pricey.

Train : On the train it will take 4 and a half hours. Though the closest station is in the town of Binh Thuan, you will need a taxi the rest of the way which costs at least 500,000 VND / $20.00.

Where To Stay In Mui Ne?

There is a wide assortment of places to stay in Mui Ne. Whether you are looking for an affordable hostel, beachside resort, or friendly guesthouse.

We stayed in a hostel during our stay. The rooms were certainly basic, but they did have everything we needed for a few night’s stay. It was also a bit of a party hostel which usually isn’t my scene.

This hostel has closed down now, but instead, I would recommend EVA HUT Mui Ne Beach Hostel .

With prices starting from $6.00 for a dorm room, this beachfront backpackers hotspot is the perfect place for budget travelers. It is smack bang right on the beach, which was definitely something we were lacking during our stay.

Staying Safe

Mui Ne is a relatively safe city to visit in Vietnam. Of course, it does have the typical scams of tourist towns and cities in Southeast Asia. This mainly revolves around robberies and being the target of pickpocketing.

In Vietnam, the motorbike snatch and grab is super common so you need to be aware of your surroundings. Someone may see your bag, phone, or camera hanging loosely off you, so they will pull up on their motorbike and take it.

One of the most common scams here is actually people being pulled over by rouge police and demanding they get paid off to avoid filing a police report. These policemen will often hang out on the roads to and from the sand dunes and just pull over every single tourist that drives past.

As you can imagine they do make quite a bit of bank from this and it is a scam that has been operating for years. This was the main reason we decided against hiring a motorbike as it simply wasn’t worth the stress (even though there are plenty of rental shops around).

Just make sure to use your common sense and for the most part, this will keep you out of dangerous situations.

FAQs About Traveling Mui Ne

How long do you need to stay at mui ne.

Honestly, I would recommend spending one or two nights in Mui Ne. This may not seem like a lot but it allows you to see the highlights and breaks up a long trip from Nha Trang to Ho Chi Minh City or vice versa.

What is the difference between Phan Thiet and Mui Ne?

Phan Thiet and Mui Ne are two coastal towns in Binh Thuan Province, Vietnam. Mui Ne is one of the five areas of Phan Thiet where you can find beachfront resorts and guesthouses.

What is Mui Ne popular for?

Mui Ne is a coastal town located in the Binh Thuan province of Vietnam. It is known for its beautiful beaches, tropical forests, sand dunes, traditional villages, fishing port, and ancient Cham buildings and ruins.

Where is the beach town of mui ne located?

Mui Ne is a coastal resort town located in the Binh Thuan province of Vietnam. It is approximately 4 hours by bus from Ho Chi Minh City.

How many days should you spend in Mui Ne?

I recommend spending 2 days in Mui Ne, as this amount of time will allow you to visit highlights such as the sand dunes and fairy stream. However, some travelers who are short on time choose to just spend one day here.

Wrap Up: How Long To Spend In Mui Ne & more

Ultimately, Mui Ne is a good destination and nicely breaks up the journey between Nha Trang and Ho Chi Minh City.

With its stunning sand dunes, picturesque fishing village, and unique fairy stream, this coastal town has something for every traveler.

Just remember it isn’t the perfect beachside destination that you first may imagine. At most just spend 2 nights exploring the highlights then move on to your next destination on your Vietnam Itinerary .

Hi! Thanks for your article. I’m typing this in Mui Ne and please anyone reading this do yourself a favour and skip it altogether. One of the ugliest places I’ve seen on Earth. Covered in litter, nothing to do or see. No shops/bars/restaurants. The sea is dirty and polluted, the beaches not existent. If you really must go, make sure you book a nice resort with a private beach. That’s the only way of making it bearable for one day.

Not spreading negativity here. I just wished I did more research and avoid wasting money here. If you look for mui ne on Reddit you might see more feedback on this, resembling what I’m saying here!

Avatar for Tasha Amy

Yeah that town itself isnt a thing of beauty, nor are the beaches I saw (like you said I couldn’t afford a nice resort with its own beach). There are much nicer places in Vietnam if you are looking for a beach getaway. However the sanddunes and unique landscapes is truly what makes Mui Ne stand out.

Avatar for Juhi

Hi Tasha very informative article. Just wanted to know if its important to do a sunrise tour or can we do a sunset tour also? Reason I will be in Mui ne for 24 hours only.

Hi Juhi You don’t need to do the sunrise tour, plus not everyone is keen to get up that early. There are also tours in the morning and afternoon as well.

Avatar for Cal

hi there, lovey article! would you happen to have a link to the sunrise tour ?

Hi Cal, here is a link to book a private sunrise jeep tour , it is surprisingly affordable. Though if you are looking for a cheaper shared tour you will need to book it in Mui Ne either through your accommodation or one of the many travel agencies there. Hope you enjoy your visit!

The original fishing village is still there, but nowadays there are more tourists than locals. It has now become a tourist beach destination with a number of luxury hotels, a few cheap hostels, but above all a midrange hotels. This town is great if you want to spend a few days on the beach, but there are not much other things to do in Mui Ne.

There are many cash machines along the main Mui Ne strip.

Local events and holidays

  • Mui Ne Street Food Festival : Mui Ne organizes a popular street food festival three times a year (usually January, April and July), with local, national and international dishes.

Rainy season : between the months of April and October. Best travel time : The best time to enjoy going to Mui Ne is from November to March.

The weather in Mui Ne is much drier throughout the year than the rest of VIetnam and is even part of the driest region in Southeast Asia.

10 best things to do in Mui Ne

Mui Ne is not a large town, the original fishing village that actually lay here was called Ham Tien. Mui Ne is actually a 10 kilometer long road where the many resorts, hostels and hotels are located. It is therefore impossible to get lost here! This is mainly about surfing and the famous sand dunes. Here is a list of the best things to do in Mui Ne.

  • Tip: If you want to do many of the best things to do in Mui Ne, you can rent a jeep with driver. There are also shared jeep tours you can join. They drive you to the dunes, Fairy Stream and fishing village.

1. Relax on the beaches

Mui Ne beach

The best thing to do in Mui Ne is enjoy the beaches. It is the main reason for going here for most travelers. Mui Ne’s has 15 kilometers of sandy beaches surrounded by palm trees, a fishing village, an array of restaurants and shops, as well as luxury resorts.

Because of the length of the beach and how extensive the town is, you don’t have to worry that the whole beach is overcrowded with tourists. During the day you can swim, read a book or sunbathe and in the evening you can dine or drink a cocktail while you watch the sun go down.

2. Visit the sand dunes

Mui Ne dunes quad driving

The sand dunes in Mui ne are the biggest attraction here after the beaches. You have the impressive red and white sand dunes that are compared to the Sahara of Vietnam. This is because the dunes are so big that when you are in the middle of them it feels like you are in a desert.

Besides the fact that the dunes are nice for a desert-like photo, there are also a lot of activities that you can do here. In the red dunes, near Mui Ne, you can slide down the dunes with a sled. Locals, especially children, walk around here to rent their sleighs to you. You can ride a jeep or quad in the white sand dunes.

3. Wind or kite surfing

Mui Ne kite surfing

The constant strong wind is ideal for kite surfing, windsurfing and other water sports. There are lessons in one of the surf schools scattered around the beach at extremely competitive prices.

4. Fairy Stream

Fairy stream

The Fairy Stream is a popular stop for the Mui Ne jeep tours. It is a stream that runs through the red-orange dunes. The landscape is therefore also compared to a kind of miniature of the Grand Canyon. The stream is ankle deep so you can walk through it without any problem.

5. Mui Ne fishing harbor

Mui Ne fishing harbor

In Mui Ne harbor you can see the fishermen coming back with their catches and you can observe the real local life in Mui Ne. The hundreds of colorful fishing boats that lie in the harbor are a beautiful sight.

6. The local fish market

Mui Ne fish market

The chaotic morning market offers a fascinating glimpse into the lives of local fishermen. Every morning they bring their catch to the coast. Expect fishing nets full of seafood, buckets full of fish and strewn with shells everywhere.

7. Visit the Cham tower

Po Shanu Cham Towers

Like many other towers of the Cham culture in Vietnam, the Po Shanu Cham Towers can also be found on top of a hill. They are from the time of the Champa empire, just like the temple complex of My Son, near Hoi An. They are located next to the city of Phan Thiet and on top of the hill you have a beautiful view of the area.

8. Ke Ga lighthouse

Ke Ga lighthouse

South of Mui Ne along the coast is an area that is best known for a beautiful beach with an island with an old lighthouse on the other side. The tower was built in 1897 and came into use in 1900, making it the oldest lighthouse in southeast Asia.

You can take a boat from the harbor to the island, but you are no longer allowed in the lighthouse. In addition, you can enjoy the beach here and the trip along the coast to Ke Ga is already worth it.

9. Ta Cu mountain and the reclining Buddha

Ke Ga lighthouse

Ta Cu Mountain consists of a vast area of lush jungle, rare flora and fauna, limestone caves and beautiful Buddhist structures, the highlight of which is the reclining Buddha. It is about 1 hour’s drive from Mui Ne. It is a nice day trip that you can combine with driving a loop via Ke Ga.

You can choose to climb the mountain or go up with a cable car. If you choose the former you walk through the woods and you will encounter a number of small temples on the way.

10. Sunrise and sunset

sunrise at the beach of Mui Ne

Sunsets and sunrises in Mui Ne are among the best in Vietnam. Choose to sit on the beach, from the fishing village or on the white or red sand dunes for incredible skies.

Mui ne handbook: essential travel tips, when is the best time to visit mui ne.

The best time to visit is from December to April, when the weather is dry and perfect for beach activities and exploring the dunes.

Transportation Tips

A. getting to vietnam.

Flying is the most convenient way to reach Vietnam. The two main international airports are Hanoi (Noi Bai Airport) for adventures starting in the North and Saigon Ton Son Nhat (Ho Chi Minh City) for trips starting in the South. For a budget adventure, you can also take an overland bus from Cambodia, Laos, or Thailand to Southeast Asia.

B. How to get to Mui Ne

  • When traveling to Mui Ne, Ho Chi Minh City’s Tan Son Nhat Airport will be the closest international airport.
  • Thanks to improved roads, travel from Ho Chi Minh City to Mui Ne in just under 3 hours by taxi, private car, or shuttle. But be warned, some local buses still take the long route to avoid toll fees, so check before you book.

C. How to get around in Mui Ne

Mui Ne is surprisingly small or a tourist hotspot, which makes traveling around on a rented bicycle or even on foot a viable option. Taxis are also an option for getting where you need to go quickly. Finally, taking a jeep tour to visit attractions like the sand dunes is a novel form of transportation that allows more immersion in the local nature than a regular car does.

Before You Go

  • Visa: Check visa requirements based on your nationality. Find out more about getting a Vietnam Visa before you visit Mui Ne .
  • Timezone: Vietnam is in the Indochina Time Zone (ICT), UTC+7.
  • Voltage: The standard voltage is 220V, and the outlets usually accept three different plugs: A, C, and F. If you are from Europe, Japan, or the Americas, your plugs will work fine. Otherwise, you’ll need an adapter. Note that many Vietnamese outlets do not have a third hole for grounding, and so can only accept two-pronged plugs.
  • Internet: Most hotels, cafes, and even restaurants in Mui Ne offer free Wi-Fi; Wi-Fi plans are so cheap in Vietnam that almost all businesses have one.
  • SIM Cards: You can buy SIM cards for data and calls at the airport (advised) or local stores. You’ll need to show your passport to get a SIM. Viettel, Mobifone, and VinaPhone are the best mobile networks for Mui Ne and most parts of Vietnam.
  • Currency: Vietnam’s currency is the Vietnamese Dong (VND), which only comes in bills. One 1 USD equals around 24,000 VND (24k). While some shops may accept USD, most only take VND.
  • Credit Cards: Visa and MasterCard are commonly accepted at large businesses like hotels, indoor restaurants, or upscale shopping venues, but smaller vendors usually only take cash or bank transfers.
  • ATMs: Mui Ne has few ATMs, so bringing cash and a Visa/Mastercard is best. Notify your bank before traveling to Vietnam to avoid blocked ATM transactions.
  • Tipping: Vietnam is not a tipping culture, so a tip is not expected. A tip is a good way to bring a smile to someone’s face, though. Note that cab drivers and tour guides often rely on some tipping, so it’s a good idea to tip them.

Understanding Culture & Customs In Mui Ne

Mui Ne’s culture combines Cham heritage, Vietnamese traditions, and a vibrant fishing community. When visiting Mui Ne, Vietnam, travelers should observe local customs by dressing conservatively at religious sites, showing respect for traditions, and being environmentally conscious. Bargaining in markets is customary but should be done respectfully. On beaches, modest attire is preferred, and public displays of affection are generally discouraged. Road safety is crucial, especially when using rental bikes. Engaging with locals courteously and supporting local businesses can enhance your travel experience and contribute positively to the community.

Common questions about Mui Ne

Some of the best resorts in Mui Ne are The Cliff Resort, The Sailing Club, and Anantara. Or the Sea Links Beach Resort and Golf for those who want golf and huge swimming pools. More modest but still comfortable hotels in Mui Ne include Moonbeam Homestay, Mini-Resort, and Van Nguyen Minihouse Resort. For more accommodation options, check out our  Mui Ne hotels  directory.

For local specialty dishes, try Mui Ne Xua or Soc Nau. Go to The Swiss House or some food stalls at Pit Stop Food Court for Western cuisine. The most adventurous travelers might want to sample sand lizard meat and other local delicacies; make your way to Vietnam Home. For even more options, head to our listing of  restaurants in Mui Ne .

Mui Ne is best known for its beautiful beaches and unique geographical features like the red and white sand dunes and the Fairy Stream. It’s also known for its casual coastal atmosphere, which is difficult to find in such close proximity to Ho Chi Minh City.

Kicking back on  Mui Ne Beach  is the most popular activity when visiting. Try a Mui Ne Surfing tour to get out onto the water. Or, if you want to get away from the beach for a while, go on a  tour of the Ta Cu Mountains  around Mui Ne. Finally, go on a  Mui Ne Street Food Tour  to explore the town’s culture.

March through November are the cheapest to visit because they make up the rainy season. However, we wouldn’t recommend visiting between May and October because those months usually experience so much rainfall that it might seriously interfere with your vacation plans.

Mui Ne is a small town, so walking or bicycling is a good option. Taxis and ridesharing services like Grab are also available.

The best time to visit Mui Ne is during the cool, dry season, from December through February each year.

2-3 days in Mui Ne is suitable for a short stay. It will allow you to see the sand dunes, the  fairy stream , and a few local fishing villages and spend some time on the beach. 4-5 days is better if you want to take it slow and relax more than rushing around to attractions.

Mui Ne Ultimate Guide – Exploring Vietnam’s Wind, Sand & Sea Destination

mui-ne

Welcome to Mui Ne , Vietnam’s coastal spectacle, where the sun-kissed beaches meet an ocean of sand dunes. Renowned for its unique landscape, Mui Ne beckons with its towering red and white dunes, exhilarating wind-based watersports, and tranquil fishing villages. Here, adventure and serenity coexist, inviting travelers to ride the wind on a kiteboard, explore rustic hamlets, or simply soak in the sublime views.

Mui Ne is more than a beach escape; it’s a vibrant escapade wrapped in the warmth of Vietnamese hospitality. Get ready to discover a seaside rhythm unlike any other—a place where every grain of sand tells a story.

Mui Ne – A Fishing Village At Its Soul

Perched along the eastern coast of Vietnam in Binh Thuan Province, Mui Ne is not one of the top 10 beach destinations in the world ; it’s the pulsating heart of the region’s rich fishing heritage. Once a sleepy enclave, it has transformed into a bustling tourist destination about 215 kilometers from Ho Chi Minh City and 11 kilometers east of Phan Thiet while retaining its soulful charm.

Travel to Mui Ne

Arriving at Mui Ne can be as memorable as your stay. Here’s how you can reach this seaside sanctuary from Ho Chi Minh City.

The most popular option is taking the SPT2 train from Ho Chi Minh City to Phan Thiet

  • Duration: Around 4 hours
  • Departures: Daily at 6:40 from Saigon Railway Station
  • Ticket Pricing: Ranges from 7.05 USD to 10.24 USD, with varied seating options

The bus route from Ho Chi Minh City to Mui Ne is another affordable and popular choice.

  • Duration: Around 5 hours
  • Departure: Frequent services throughout the day from Mien Dong Bus Station
  • Operators: Phuong Trang, Sinh Cafe
  • Ticket Price: 3.68 USD to 5.32 USD

By Motorbike or Private Car

For a journey at your own pace, take the coastal road via Ke Ga Cape or the more direct National Highway 1A and Suoi Cat intersection. Of course, the motorbike option is only recommended for experienced drivers who are familiar with the traffic in Vietnam.

  • Duration: 3 to 4 hours with car riding and 3 to 5 hours with motorbike ridding
  • To reach Mui Ke Ga from Ho Chi Minh City, take the route through Binh Lau and La Gi. Once reaching Binh Thuan Province, continue driving towards Phan Thiet city center. This route is approximately 242 kilometers long, but it is known for being scenic, beautiful, and easy to drive.
  • You can take the second route which involves following National Road 1A through Binh Thuan Province until you reach Suoi Cat Intersection. From there, turn left and enter Phan Thiet City, and then continue along Provincial Road 706 until you reach Mui Ne. This route covers a distance of approximately 209 kilometers and has plenty of gas stations along the way.

Best Season To Explore Mui Ne

Mui Ne is blessed with a tropical coastal climate, characterized by two distinct seasons that dictate the best times to visit this picturesque beach town.

mui-ne-2

Choose the best time for a vacation in Mui Ne

The optimal time for visiting Mui Ne would be at the tail end of the dry season, from late February to April. The weather is still dry, but the winds are less intense, making it more comfortable for those who are not into wind-powered sports. Additionally, this timing avoids the peak tourist season around December and January, offering a more relaxed atmosphere with less crowded beaches and attractions.

  • Dry season (November to April)

The dry season, extending from November through April, is widely regarded as the most ideal period to visit Mui Ne. During these months, the weather is predominantly sunny with clear blue skies and a minimal chance of rainfall, making it perfect for beach activities, watersports, and exploring the dunes. The temperatures are comfortably warm, usually hovering around 25°C to 30°C (77°F to 86°F), which is ideal for those looking to escape colder climates.

This season also brings with it the consistent winds that Mui Ne is famous for, especially from December to February, making it a world-renowned spot for kitesurfing and windsurfing enthusiasts.

  • Rainy season (May to October)

The rainy season falls between May and October. The weather is still warm during this time, but it is marked by higher humidity and frequent, albeit usually short-lived, rain showers. These downpours often occur in the late afternoon or evening, and while they can bring a refreshing change to the day’s heat, they might also interrupt some outdoor activities.

However, the rainy season has its own charm, as the landscape becomes lush and green, and the crowds are fewer, providing a more laid-back experience. Moreover, the prices for accommodation and activities can be lower during this off-peak season.

Unveiling The Wonders Of Mui Ne

Mui Ne is a tapestry of natural wonders and cultural landmarks, each offering a unique experience.

The White Sand Dunes and Red Sand Dunes of Mui Ne are two of nature’s most stunning canvases, where the sands tell tales of time and the winds sing the songs of the sea.

mui-ne-3

Behold the breathtaking beauty of Mui Ne’s White Sand Dunes and Red Sand Dunes

  • White Sand Dunes

Beyond the coastal charm of Mui Ne, a journey of about 30 kilometers leads to the transcendent beauty of the White Sand Dunes of Bau Trang.

The White Sand Dunes are a marvel at any time of day, but they hold a special enchantment at dawn. The early morning sun spills its first golden rays across the dunes, setting the white sands aglow with a pure, pearlescent light. For those with a spirit of adventure, the dunes offer the thrill of sandboarding—sliding down the gentle slopes feels like surfing on a sea of crystals, a must-try experience for any visitor.

  • Red Sand Dunes

Closer to the beating heart of Phan Thiet City, a mere 25 kilometers away, the Red Sand Dunes of Mui Ne is a contrasting spectacle. These dunes are a celebration of hues, as the sands shift from golden to amber to a deep, burnished red. Adjacent to the scenic Hon Rom Beach, their accessibility makes them an ever-popular attraction.

As the sun begins to dip towards the horizon, the Red Sand Dunes transform into an amphitheater of natural wonder. Sandboarding here becomes not just an activity but a rite of passage, as you glide down the slopes with the wind in your hair, the fine grains whispering beneath you. As evening approaches, the sunset paints the sky in strokes of fiery orange and passionate purples, a breathtaking sight that makes the Red Sand Dunes a photographer’s paradise.

Mui Ne Beach

This palm-fringed beach is the heart of Mui Ne’s resort life. Known for its steady wind conditions, it’s a hotspot for kitesurfing and windsurfing. The golden sands and gentle waves offer a tranquil retreat for sunbathers and swimmers alike.

Mui Ne Harbor

At Mui Ne Harbor, Vietnam’s vibrant fishing culture comes alive. Witness the flurry of activity as fishermen haul in their bountiful catch, a daily ritual that offers insight into the local way of life and the importance of the sea to the community.

Fairy Stream

A geological wonder, the Fairy Stream runs through a canyon with dramatic limestone formations and red sand cliffs on either side. Visitors can wade through the shallow waters, which lead to a small waterfall, making for a picturesque journey through one of Mui Ne’s most enchanting attractions.

Linh Long Tu Temple

Resting on the slopes of Nghia Trung Hill, Linh Long Tu Temple is a serene sanctuary that has witnessed the passage of two centuries. Founded in 1811, this temple evolved from a simple bamboo structure to a stone-walled building with a traditional tiled roof. 10 Amazing Things To Do In Mui Ne

Mui Ne is a coastal haven that offers a plethora of activities tailored to the tastes of adventurers, culture enthusiasts, and relaxation-seekers alike. Here’s a list of some of the best things to do in this vibrant Vietnamese town:

Embark on a Quad Bike Adventure at the Sand Dunes

Dreams of the Sahara can be fulfilled without venturing far, as Mui Ne hosts its very own desert-like expanse. A visit to the White Sand Dunes (Bau Trang) is a must-do for many visitors to Mui Ne, but to elevate this adventure, hop onto an ATV (all-terrain vehicle) and navigate the undulating sea of sand that stretches before you.

The Red Sand Dunes may be smaller, but they compensate with breathtaking views of the ocean. Ascend these crimson hills and then descend on plastic sleds, available for rent or on loan from the friendly locals. For those seeking a pulse-racing activity, this is an opportunity not to be missed!

Essential Tips For Your Mui Ne Holiday

mui-ne-9

How to prepare for your Mui Ne trip

Before you embark on your Mui Ne adventure, consider these essential tips to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience in this coastal gem.

Plan Your Trip According To The Weather

Mui Ne enjoys a tropical climate with a distinct dry and wet season. The best time to visit is from November to April, when the weather is warm with less rainfall, making it ideal for beach activities and exploration. If you’re interested in windsurfing or kitesurfing, this period offers the best conditions. The wet season, from May to October, can see sporadic, heavy showers, although they’re typically short-lived and can offer a different kind of beauty to your trip.

Use Local Currency and Payment Methods

The Vietnamese Dong (VND) is the official currency, and while some places accept US dollars, it’s best to have local currency on hand for small purchases. ATMs are common in tourist areas, but it’s wise to carry cash, especially when shopping at local markets or dining at street food stalls. Credit cards are accepted at most hotels and upscale restaurants.

Dress Respectfully and Prepare For The Sun

While beachwear is acceptable on the sand, it’s essential to dress modestly when visiting temples or local villages. Always carry sun protection, including sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat, as the sun can be intense, even on cloudy days.

Try The Local Cuisine

Mui Ne is renowned for its seafood, so don’t miss out on the fresh catches of the day. Street food in Vietnam is not only delicious but also an integral part of the cultural experience. Be adventurous and try local specialties like banh xeo or goi cuon .

Learn Some Basic Vietnamese Phrases

Knowing a few phrases in Vietnamese can enrich your travel experience. Simple greetings, thank-yous, and numbers for bargaining can enhance your interactions with locals.

Respect The Environment

Mui Ne’s natural beauty is one of its biggest draws. Help preserve it by avoiding single-use plastics, disposing of your trash responsibly, and respecting wildlife and plant life during your activities.

By keeping these tips in mind, you’ll be well on your way to a memorable and fulfilling journey through Mui Ne’s stunning landscapes and vibrant culture.

Mui Ne Is Waiting For You

Step onto the shores of Mui Ne and let yourself be enchanted by the vibrant tapestry it weaves, with threads of adventure, tranquility, and cultural depth. From the ethereal beauty of the Fairy Stream to the rhythmic dance of the traditional fishermen, it’s a kaleidoscope of life’s simple pleasures and nature’s grandeur. Whether you’re riding the waves, exploring the dunes, or savoring the local cuisine, every moment in Mui Ne is a brushstroke on the canvas of your travel memories.
