Motley Crue announce farewell UK tour and London dates including 'ginormous' 200ft rollercoaster

motley crue tour london

Hard rockers Motley Crue have announced they will embark on a farewell UK tour later this year, which will include a 200ft rollercoaster and their "largest production" to date.

Calling time after 34 years, the Los Angeles band will be appearing across Europe as part the tour, which will include dates at London’s Wembley Arena in November.

The shows will feature a "ginormous" rollercoaster fitted around each stadium, a section of the audience which will be lifted into the air, and so many pyrotechnics that the fourpiece will have to wear protective clothing.

Last January they signed a so-called death pact, meaning the group who have sold more than 100 million records worldwide, vowed to no longer perform together once the tour ends.

The band, well-known for hits including Girls, Girls, Girls and Kickstart My Heart, announced the new dates at a press conference with fellow rockstar Alice Cooper, who will be joining them for part of the tour.

Drummer Tommy Lee said: "This will be the largest production we've ever done.

"One of the things will be a ginormous rollercoaster which goes out about 200ft out into the audience and about 60ft into the air.

"We've also got a new addition called the cruise vest and at the beginning of the show we'll perform a number where a bunch of seats around the stage will rise up with us about 40ft into the air as we're playing."

Renowned for their tales of rock-and-roll debauchery and years of drug abuse, the band struggled to remember their first visit to the UK.

Singer Vince Neil said: "First time we came to the UK was for Download Festival (then Monsters of Rock), I think, we did a lot of drugs so we don't remember."

Motley Crue remain one of the biggest-selling bands of all time, releasing nine albums and selling more than 100 million records worldwide.

Bassist Nikki Sixx, who was once declared legally dead after a heroin overdose, said: "We think about everything we shared together, it's something very few people get to experience.

"We got to experience the highest highs and the lowest lows together, we've been best friends, we've been at odds with each other and we've done stuff we didn't even have any idea was possible."

"The tour is kind of bittersweet," added Neil.

"Sometimes I will be on stage, looking out and singing, and I will get a little choked up."

One of the most iconic American heavy metal bands, Mötley Crüe was born out of the beautiful Los Angeles, California in the United States.

Formed in 1981, bassist Nikki Six met drummer Tommy Lee through a mutual friend, and decided to form a band together. The two set out to find other members and met guitarist Mick Mars (real name Bob Deal) who was immediately auditioned and hired. Lee then recruited his high school mate Vince Neil, who was still a part of the band Rockandi, to be their lead vocalist. After a bit of apprehension, Neil gave in and joined the trio to form the band you know and love as Mötley Crüe today.

In November 1981 they released their first album “Too Fast For Love” which was entirely produced and released by their own record label Leathür Records and set out on a Canadian tour. Using this forward movement of cult popularity in Los Angeles, their manager at the time, Allan Coffman, helped them obtain a record deal with Elektra Records; which they signed in Spring 1982. The signing meant a re-mastered mix of the album “Too Fast For Love” as well as a new album entitled “Shout At The Devil” in the works, which was consequently released in 1983. A mere two years later, they released a third album, “Theatre of Pain.”

Their quick success was not without consequence however. Their party hard mentalities meant a few run-ins with the law, reaching their first breaking point when Vince Neil crashed his car, resulting in death and severe injury to other passengers. While “Theatre of Pain” was sitting atop the music charts, Neil was found guilty of vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence and served time in 1986. If that wasn’t enough, following the release of their fourth album “Girls Girls Girls,” their 1987 tour had to be canceled due to Sixx being found dead from heroin overdose; however, he was revived back to life. Eventually their new managers Doug Thaler and Doc McGhee convinced them to attend rehab and the band took a step out of the spotlight.

A clean and sober band, Mötley Crüe recorded and released “Dr. Feelgood” in 1989 and it shot straight to the charts and stayed for weeks. By October 1991, the band released their first compilation album “Decade of Decadence” which also shot straight to the Billboard charts; however, the 90s was generally not a strong decade for the band. Neil left, was shortly replaced by John Corabi for the release of “Motley Crue” which didn’t meet the commercial expectation as their previous albums. With contractual obligations lived out in 1998, the band took back their catalog, but tensions were still high resulting solo projects by Tommy Lee, Nikki Sixx and Vince Neil.

Luckily things picked back up in the 2000s resulting in a reunion, and release of the “New Tattoo” and “Saints of Los Angeles” (2008). However, this also meant the announcement of their retirement and final tour.

Live reviews

This is the fourth time I've seen the Crüe, and the second time at MSG. Even though I also saw them on tour with Aerosmith, and saw a show during one of their residencies at the Hard Rock in Las Vegas, this Final Tour show lives up to expectations. Vince even learned most of the words to the songs!! (Anyone who has seen Mötley Crüe live before will know that this is kind of a big deal. At previous shows I’ve attended, the audience sang nearly as much as Vince did.)

Nikki Sixx is my favorite member of Mötley Crüe, and he was in top form at this show, and even had a fire-shooting attachment on his bass for "Shout at the Devil." He also regaled the audience with the long story of how he moved to LA and pulled the band together. Even though I already knew the story from reading The Dirt, it was still great to hear Nikki tell it live, in his own words. While that little interlude brought the energy level down a bit, it did a nice job of bringing the night full circle and truly encapsulating all 33 years of the band's life.

Tommy Lee's drum roller coaster contraption was totally insane, spanning the length of the arena floor, and allowing Tommy’s drum kit to do 360 degree spins as it travelled along the track. The guys played a solid two hour set and definitely went out with a bang (literally - there was a ton of pyro during closing number "Kickstart My Heart," including Nikki’s afore mentioned fire-shooting bass).

The strongest testament to this show is that the next day I had to go online to check the rest of their tour dates to find out if I could possibly see another show on the tour (sadly, no other cities convenient to me remain), and a full 24 hours later I was still buzzing with energy.

However, to paraphrase Nikki, this show/tour isn't "goodbye" because the Crüe's music isn’t going anywhere – it’s going to be around to haunt us until the day that we die.

Mötley Crüe is Mötley Crüe. Loud, aggressive, sometimes out of key and sometimes the lyrics are skipped or mumbled. But the show goes on, and the presentation is excellent. There is fire. There are dancers. There are lights and lasers and explosions, even Nikki's flame throwing bass guitar is back! About the only thing missing would be a giant video screen showing the band's MTV hits as they played them. If you have seen the Crüe at any point in the last decade, then you know what to expect; ten to twelve standard hits, a couple of newer wanna be hits, a few rotating 'deep cut' tracks that really are not that deep anymore. Oh, and then there is the drum solo. On this farewell tour the antics in the drum solo depend if the venue can support it. Sonically, maybe you're better without the drum solo - the antics are cool, the drumming is not. To me Mötley Crüe has always been a band of individuals that somehow fit together when they need to rock the stage. Tommy famous for his off stage antics as much as his drumming stunts - both overshadowing his ability a bit. Mick's quiet, methodical personality never seemed to fit his guitar playing, or the band - but it works. Vince - well has he let himself go a bit too much? Still a great front man - off stage. Nikki, you get a little bit of everything with him, but he has the talent still to back up most of what he says and does. Though I am curious why they have dumped the new song from their set lists after just a few dates on the tour. This 'may' be the last tour, and it will satisfy most fans. But it's not the last time you will hear these songs. Expect side projects to keep these songs alive until a reunion of some sorts down the road.

If you’ve read Keith Richards’ autobiography, Life - and I’d thoroughly recommend it if you haven’t - you’ll know all about his attitude to his legendary drug-taking; fairly blase, for the most part, although he also largely insists that he only did them for utilitarian purposes - for the sake of staying up long enough to get songs finished, or to knock him out when there were too many ideas bouncing around his brain. I don’t know if any of the members of Motley Crue have read his book, either, but they’ll likely have treated Richards’ admission that hedonism wasn’t his sole motivating factor as a show of weakness; indeed, hedonism is the very foundation on which the L.A. band were built. There are far more classic tales of rock and roll excess than I can list here - bass player Nikki Sixx once had to be effectively resurrected after a heroin overdose with two shots of adrenaline straight to the heart - and all indications are that the lifestyles that made the Crue one of the most notorious bands in rock and roll history back in the eighties have begun to catch up with them, decades later. They’re currently undertaking what will be their final ever tour, running through to 2015, before retirement; as un-Crue a concept as that seems, though, they’ll be bringing their larger than life personas to the stage with them for one last run through the hits; expect a serious shot of glamorous debauchery from a band that nobody expected to be old before they died.

I saw Motley Crue on the Theatre of Pain tour when I was in High School and was blown away. I have been hooked from that moment. This tour is AWESOME!!! They are tighter than ever and engage the crowd from the very beginning! Alice Cooper was great as always but Motley set the standard and showed why they are the Gods of Heavy Metal and Glam Rock. Nikki Sixx played a Bass that shot Fire while he was shredding center stage. On With The Show was amazing and was electrifying the crowd. No one sat down the entire show. Shoreline at Mountain View was a perfect intimate venue for them. Their encore was on a mini stage in the middle of the crowd next to me. Motley truly showed that they love their fans and playing music. Mick Mars is a virtuoso on the axe. Even if you have seen them before go. If you haven't you MUST SEE THIS BAND. I have seen them a couple of times and they are true artists and take you on a journey that only they can. They play everything on this tour. Dr. Feelgood, Shout at the Devil, Saints of Los Angeles and Smoking in the Boys Room. They use smoke, fire, lasers and female dancers throughout the show. Nikki gives a different talk every night about being in the band and what the fans mean to him. Mick Mars does a solo that you will not believe. I am looking to find them somewhere else on this tour. It is worth every penny and MORE!!

Having seen Motley Crüe over 20 times since the mid 80's, this was bittersweet. The show was good, there were a few things that stood out. Vince's voice sounded a little tired and even more important, I really missed having the Tommy drum show at the Hollywood Bowl. Last time I saw them there they did have the roller coaster drums and this time with all the hype about his set up, he was not able to do it at the bowl. He also did not engage with the crowd nearly as much as usual, he just stayed back and played. I would have liked to hear more from him. All in all though, they played all the songs I wanted to hear and it was a fun evening. The end of an era and sad to see them go when they are still young and can clearly put on a great live show.

Motley Crue were my first concert. They were awesome then and were awesome in Greenville twenty four years later. A spectacle of sound, fire, explosions, and mayhem. Most of the crowd was on their feet and singing along for the whole concert.

Alice Cooper opened the show and brought all of his tricks: the snake, the guillotine, the Frankenstein monster, etc.

I've had a thought all week of how great it is to be able to see these guys on stage in 2014 and it might as well be 1990, 1975, etc. As a sports fan, I can't see Herschel Walker, Rickey Henderson, or Joe Montana perform like they did in their prime, but I can still see Alice Cooper and Motley Crue replicate their prime.

If you get the chance to see this show, go!

For one thing the first band (not Alice Cooper) was so loud and horrible we had to go outside to where the merchandise was sold just to get away. Alice Cooper was amazing as always... Mötley Crue was AMAZING! I've never seen them live! Their pyrotechnics was awesome, they covered alot of the years of music. Nikki spoke about how they ended up together. The only thing I was disappointed about was Tommy's drumset was small because people that have seen them live before absolutely raved about him and his drums: he didn't have one solo..and really didn't even get to see him excel through smoke. Overall I would definitely see them again. Seeing them perform live was great.

Seeing the boys one last time was great, Motley Crue did not disappoint. Having Alice Cooper start the concert was cool, it was my first time seeing him perform live and he sounds great. If they come to your town do yourself a huge favor and buy tickets to this show. All their top hits and a few from their latest albums made for one serious night of Heavy Metal!

Get there early, you'll definitely want the skull made out of band members' photos. I love my shirt!

Motley Crue Teases Another ‘Secret’ Club Show Under Pseudonym

Motley Crue appears to be teasing another “secret” club show under a different name — this time at New York’s Bowery Ballroom under the pseudonym “1981.”

The band shared a flyer on social media for the gig, which is scheduled to take place on May 6. There’s a corresponding concert listing for 1981 on the Bowery’s website . Tickets go on sale May 3. The show is set to take place two days after Motley Crue completes their two-night stand in Atlantic City, New Jersey, to mark the beginning of their 2024 tour dates.

This isn’t Motley Crue’s first small-scale secret show. Last June, the band played a gig at the 450-capacity Underworld club in London ahead of its Wembley Stadium concert. They performed under the moniker Dogs of War, which is also the name of their new single .

Details on Motley Crue’s ‘Dogs of War’ and Other New Music Plans

“Dogs of War,” released last Friday, marks Motley Crue’s first single since 2019 and their first with new guitarist John 5 , who replaced founding guitarist Mick Mars in late 2022. The animated video is littered with Motley Easter eggs, from Too Fast for Love to Generation Swine .

“The whole fun thing is that in our life, in general, it seems like everyone’s always been trying to kill us, kill our career, and so it’s fun in the video that you can’t kill us,” Nikki Sixx recently told UCR . “Even when we die, we end up snorting our own ashes and coming back.”

Motley Crue revealed last April that they were working on new music with Bob Rock , who produced their chart-topping Dr. Feelgood . Sixx claimed that Rock was “pushing us hard and bringing out the best in us. Tommy [Lee] is playing his ass off. Jesus, these drums sound huge. [I’ll] probably lay down my final bass tracks in the next few days. John is so fast I’m sure he will get all the songs done in just a few days. But then again, Bob Rock loves those huge walls of guitars so it could take a moment.”

MÖTLEY CRÜE Shares Official Music Video For 'Dogs Of War'

MÖTLEY CRÜE has released the official music video for the band's new single, "Dogs Of War" . The track was made available via MÖTLEY CRÜE 's new deal with Nashville's Big Machine Records . Created by Nick DenBoer , the visual features the rowdy quartet in an apocalyptic wasteland, full of classic CRÜE debauchery.

"It's always great getting back in the studio with the guys in the band," CRÜE bassist Nikki Sixx says. "We know you're gonna like this one."

Bob Rock , who produced the new single, as well as MÖTLEY CRÜE 's famed 1989 album "Dr. Feelgood" , adds: "Working with the band on the new song was the easiest session I have ever had with them… The CRÜE is the best they have ever been! And they have plenty of new stuff in store."

"We want to keep putting out new music, too, so we don't get stagnant," CRÜE singer Vince Neil told Billboard . "We recorded '(You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party!)' by the BEASTIE BOYS and we recorded this song, too, and I thought it turned out pretty good.

"There'll definitely be new music out next year, for sure," Neil added, "'cause we recorded a couple of other songs, too. Maybe we'll release one of those by the end of the year, but I can't say. But we want to keep putting out new music — not, maybe, an album but a few songs here, a few songs there, and that’s good."

Neil described "Dogs Of War" as "like old school meets new school. It's got that old-school vibe about it, but it's new music. Nikki came up with it and he sent me the music and I thought it was really cool. So I started singing it and we got in the studio and it turned into the song I think the fans are really gonna like it."

MÖTLEY CRÜE 's new deal with Big Machine Records sees the band working together again after making the 2014 project "Nashville Outlaws: A Tribute To Mötley Crüe" , which featured CRÜE tracks covered by country stars RASCAL FLATTS , FLORIDA GEORGIA LINE , Darius Rucker and more. Big Machine also partnered with MÖTLEY CRÜE guitarist John 5 for the release of his 2021 album "Sinner" .

"It's a great match for us," Vince told Classic Rock . "We're good friends with [ Big Machine founder/CEO] Scott Borchetta , who put together the 'Nashville Outlaws' album back in 2014. His company just knows radio, how to get it out there, how to get the right people listening."

MÖTLEY CRÜE 's last studio album was 2008's "Saints Of Los Angeles" , which was followed by a 2009 "Greatest Hits" compilation.

In 2018, MÖTLEY CRÜE recorded four new songs for "The Dirt" movie, including the single "The Dirt (Est. 1981) (Feat. Machine Gun Kelly)" , "Ride With The Devil" , "Crash And Burn" and the band's own spin on Madonna 's "Like A Virgin" .

" 'The Dirt' movie got us a whole new generation of fans," Neil said. "We want to keep putting new music out. We don't want to stagnate."

"We self-released 'Too Fast For Love' on our own Leathür Records label," Neil added of the band's 1981 debut. "It cost $3,000 to make and was done in three days. It was a glorified demo tape, but we were the record label until we got signed by Elektra . We haven't been on a record label for 20 years. But Scott shares our philosophy and he's a brilliant guy."

In December, MÖTLEY CRÜE drummer Tommy Lee told Desert Sun about the three new songs he and his bandmates recorded with Rock : "Wait until you hear it. It's insane. It's not a full album, but that might be down the road a bit. We're always writing and doing stuff, so that's always a possibility down the road. But we just went to the studio not too long ago and recorded three insane tracks and one of them is called 'Dogs Of War' . We're just finishing up the video for it. For those jonesing for some new CRÜE , people are going to bug out. John 5 is playing on it, the guitar work is incredible and it sounds sick."

MÖTLEY CRÜE debuted its cover of "(You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party!)" during a "secret" June 30, 2023 club performance for 450 lucky fans at the Underworld in London, England.

In September, John 5 told Meltdown of Detroit's WRIF radio station about how much input he had during the songwriting process for the new CRÜE music: "We all sat in a room and did it together. 'Cause me and Nikki have written for years and years and years together. So it was nothing new. And me and Tommy worked in the studio together many times as well. So it was nothing new being in the studio, but it was new with Bob Rock .

"What was so wild was we got in a room… It was like total old school, man," he explained. "You get in the live room and there's my amp and there's Nikki 's amp and there's Tommy 's drums, there's a mic… 'Cause I'm so used to just playing in the control room. And it's, like, 'Oh no, no, no. We're all gonna get in this room and we're gonna play.' And that's how we recorded. It was incredible. I've never recorded that way. And it was maybe one of the best experiences I had recording. It was so fun. It was a blast. I had to, like, make notes and all this stuff, and we just played through it. It was incredible."

Last spring, John 5 told Sirius XM 's "Trunk Nation With Eddie Trunk" about recording with Rock : " Bob would come in and [say], 'Okay, let's try this here, and that here and this here. It was one of the most incredible experiences ever… I'm thinking, 'We've got so much great technology today'… but we got in that room and it was like being in a garage working on a song when you were in high school… It was incredible, and we documented a lot of it too."

Regarding the musical direction of the tracks he and the rest of MÖTLEY CRÜE have recorded so far, John 5 said: "The songs are fucking heavy. I sound like a little excited kid right now, but they're heavy and they're mean. I can't wait for them to come out. I'm just so excited."

When host Eddie Trunk asked John 5 whether the new MÖTLEY CRÜE music can be compared to the band's breakthrough second album, 1983's "Shout At The Devil" , the guitarist said that some of the new riffs are "heavier than anything" on that LP. "All I can tell you is that it's heavy and it's aggressive, and I think people are going to dig it because, talking as a fan, it's fucking badass," he said.

John 5 joined MÖTLEY CRÜE in the fall of 2022 as the replacement for the band's co-founding guitarist Mick Mars . Mick announced his retirement from touring with MÖTLEY CRÜE in October 2022 as a result of worsening health issues.

Mars suffers from Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS),a chronic and inflammatory form of arthritis that mainly affects the spine and pelvis. After years of performing through the pain, he informed the other members of MÖTLEY CRÜE in the summer of 2022 that he could no longer tour with them but would still be open to recording new music or performing at residencies that did not require much travel.

When Mars announced his retirement from touring with MÖTLEY CRÜE , he maintained that he would remain a member of the band, with John 5 taking his place on the road. However, in early April 2023 the now-72-year-old musician filed a lawsuit against CRÜE in Los Angeles County's Superior Court claiming that, after his announcement, the rest of CRÜE tried to remove him as a significant stakeholder in the group's corporation and business holdings via a shareholders' meeting.

Decolonise Fest, London's acclaimed DIY music festival by and for punks of colour, launches fundraiser for 2024 weekender

How you can play a part in helping stage one of London's most important punk festivals

Gurnal Gadafi

Decolonise Fest , an annual celebration of music, workshops, and art created by and for punks of colour, has been a key component of London's DIY punk scene since 2017. Now the team behind the acclaimed festival, which was created by Big Joanie guitarist and writer Stephanie Phillips and advocates for emerging artists of colour, has launched a fundraising drive in order to stage their 2024 weekender.

In a statment on social media the organisers say: "Decolonise Fest needs your help. The landscape has changed significantly since we last ran the festival in 2022. Venues closing down, inflation going up, the challenge of being DIY going nowhere. While we have been fortunate to receive funding from the PRS Foundation to fund our On Tour series of shows, the main Fest is a different beast and a recent slew of unexpected expenses have put our plans for this year in serious jeopardy. We pride ourselves on being an independent and progressive festival run by POC volunteers, who give hours of their free time to platform artists of colour and give POC fans of alternative music a place to celebrate themselves. we won’t take money from anyone who will compromise the values of the festival we love so much. so we’re coming to you, the people, to ask for a radical show of community. Currently, we need to raise £4500 by the end of June to run a festival in September 2024. yes, that’s a tall order but together, we’re taller."

You can find out more about the fundraiser and donate on the event's website , and on their Instagram page.

This year's Decolonise Fest is pencilled in for September 11-13 at Signature Brew Haggerston in East London.
