Metallica ‘Kick A– and Celebrate Life’ at Surprisingly Feel-Good U.S. Tour Opener

The M72 World Tour stateside kickoff at MetLife stadium in New Jersey -- which also doubled as a birthday party for Metallica's frontman -- was an altogether life-affirming experience.

Trending on billboard.

And both the song selection and the performance was pretty impeccable throughout. It felt a privilege to get near 10 minutes each of both the spellbinding Master of Puppets instrumental chugger “Orion” and the underrated 21st century “Simple Man”-turned-“Free Bird” power ballad “The Day That Never Comes,” with the band — minus the occasional Lars aberration — in total lockstep, guitarist Kirk Hammett’s solos in particular sounding as explosive and radiant as ever. Even most of the material from the new 72 Seasons , which can feel a little flat on record, came alive in this setting — sounding more credible than ever as forgotten b-sides or second-side cuts from the band’s classic period. (“If Darkness Had a Son,” though, will likely always be a tough hang.)

The show closed with “Master of Puppets” — a signature song which, after three and a half decades of fan worship, also become the band’s unlikely first Hot 100 top 40 hit in nearly 15 years last summer. The most indelible image of the evening — in our section at least — was a series of four pre-teens in matching Metallica shirts losing their minds (and eventually their shirts) to “Master,” all members-in-training of the Hellfire Club , no doubt. One of the adults supervising them was also wearing a shirt with a Napster logo — seemingly as neither an ironic nor confrontational gesture, but rather just as a winking acknowledgment of how much water under the bridge band and audience share after 40 years.

The most emotional moment of the night, however, came earlier, as Hetfield acknowledged thanked the crowd for “remembering my birthday” — the frontman having turned 60 just on Thursday. “My seventh decade on the planet… I can’t believe it,” he rhapsodized from on stage. “Younger me would be saying, ‘You made it. You effing made it.'” Then, before launching into “Fade to Black” — from the band’s second album, and still one of the most vivid, heartbreaking, and yet strangely empowering songs ever written about suicidal ideation — he reflected, “I’m glad I didn’t listen to my head when I was young.” It’s a long way to the top, but Hetfield and Metallica made a very good case on Friday for why getting there is worth the trip.

“Creeping Death” “Harvester of Sorrow” “Holier Than Thou” “King Nothing” “72 Seasons” “If Darkness Had a Son” “Fade to Black” “Shadows Follow” “Orion” “Nothing Else Matters” “Sad But True” “The Day That Never Comes” “Battery” “Fuel” “Seek and Destroy” “Master of Puppets”

METALLICA Announces Massive 'M72' World Tour For 2023 + 2024

Today marks the announcement of every METALLICA show booked through 2023 and 2024: Presented worldwide by Liquid Death and Blackened American Whiskey (in North America only) and promoted by Live Nation, METALLICA 's "M72" world tour will see the band playing two nights in every city it visits — with each "No Repeat Weekend" featuring two completely different setlists and support lineups. The "M72" tour will feature a bold new in-the-round stage design that relocates the famed METALLICA Snake Pit to center stage, as well as the "I Disappear" full-tour pass and the debut of discounted tickets for fans under 16 years of age. Two-day tickets will be on sale Friday, December 2 at Ticketmaster.com and will include the option of pre-ordering METALLICA 's new album, "72 Seasons" , on vinyl and/or CD. Single-day tickets will be available beginning January 20. For further information including fan club presales, enhanced experiences and more, go to metallica.com/m72-info.

A portion of proceeds from every ticket sold will go to the band's All Within My Hands foundation. Founded in 2017, AWMH 's efforts to assist and enrich the lives of members of the communities who have supported the band have raised nearly $13 million — providing $5.9 million in grants to career and technical education programs in the US, over $2.5 million to combat food insecurity, and more than $3.2 million to disaster relief efforts worldwide.

Citi is the official card of the "M72" tour. Citi cardmembers will have access to presale tickets in the U.S. beginning Wednesday, November 30 at 2:00 p.m. local time until Thursday, December 1 at 10:00 p.m. local time through the Citi Entertainment program.

"72 Seasons" will be released on April 14, 2023 via the band's own Blackened Recordings . Produced by Greg Fidelman with METALLICA 's James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich , and clocking in at over 77 minutes, the 12-track "72 Seasons" is METALLICA 's first full length collection of new material since 2016's "Hardwired…To Self-Destruct" . The album will be released in formats including 2LP 140g black vinyl and limited-edition variants, CD and digital.

Says METALLICA : "We told you about our new album '72 Seasons' . So what's next now that we've escaped the studio? Hit the road, of course! You want a tour, we've got a tour... how about two full years' worth of shows?!?!

"Over the past few years, we have been so inspired by the dedication and family/community vibe of the fans who traveled to San Francisco for our recent weekend celebrations, first in 2019 with the two 'S&M2' shows, followed by last year's 40th Anniversary shows. On top of that, we had a blast being a part of the 2021 Wimmer Festivals when we played two nights in one city, each with a totally different setlist. With all of that in mind, the 'M72' tour was born!

"Starting in April of 2023, we'll be visiting 22 different cities around the world and playing two nights in each city, with each 'No Repeat Weekend' show a completely unique experience: Two totally different set lists with two different bands opening the show each night! Purchase a two-day ticket, and you won't see the same song twice for a total of over 30 songs spanning our 40+ years of being lucky enough to make music. Most of the shows (sorry, not all - we tried!) will be on Fridays and Sundays, so we'll be sure to have lots of extracurricular events for you to hang with fellow METALLICA fans at before the shows kick-off and on the Saturday night in between.

"Presented worldwide by Liquid Death and Blackened American Whiskey (in North America only),and brought to you by our friends at Live Nation , the 'M72' tour also launches a completely different look for us in stadiums — we'll be in the round in the middle of the field. On top of that, the Snake Pit has been relocated to the center of the stage so that fans there will have a complete 360 view of the show. Each weekend offers a variety of Enhanced Experiences, ranging from access to a meet and greet, production and stage tour, food and beverage in the 'Black Box' lounge to early entry into the venue and the aforementioned Snake Pit. The very popular 'Black Laminate' is back, now known as the 'I Disappear Ticket,' and is the ultimate pass for the fan who wants to run away with us for multiple weekends. Grab one of these and attend every show on your continent or in the world! For more information about Enhanced Experiences and I Disappear Tickets, visit wearesuper.co/metallica.

"In keeping with the theme of two completely unique shows each weekend, we're excited to share the stage with different bands each night, including some we have traveled with before and new friends who are joining us for the first time. Signing up for the entire adventure with us are FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH , ICE NINE KILLS and MAMMOTH WVH , and some of you will see PANTERA , ARCHITECTS , GRETA VAN FLEET or VOLBEAT , depending on the shows you attend. All the details are in the listing of dates below and on the individual show pages.

"Two-day discounted tickets will be on sale Friday, December 2, for all shows. Fan Club presales start early on Wednesday, November 30, with various other presales beginning later that day and throughout the week. To request your Fan Club presale code, visit metallica.com/presale-code. If you cannot join us for the entire weekend, single-day tickets will be available starting January 20, 2023.

"A portion of proceeds from every ticket sold will go to the band's All Within My Hands foundation. Founded in 2017, AWMH 's efforts to assist and enrich the lives of members of the communities who have supported the band have raised nearly $13 million – providing $5.9 million in grants to career and technical education programs in the US, over $2.5 million to combat food insecurity, and more than $3.2 million to disaster relief efforts worldwide.

"We cannot wait to embark on this new adventure, play some new music, and spend our weekends in '23 and '24 with YOU!"

Setlist, Photos + Video – Metallica Kick Off World Tour Supporting New Album ’72 Seasons’

Metallica 's M72 world tour is officially underway, having kicked off in Amsterdam, Netherlands at the Johan Cruijff Arena today (April 27). The band's setlist was comprised of 16 songs, none of which will be played again on Saturday (April 29) when the metal legends return to the same venue as part of their "no repeat weekend" agenda on the 2023 and 2024 trek in support of their new album,  72 Seasons .

Prior to the album's release, Metallica performed the lead single "Lux Aeterna" as well as the the new song "If Darkness Had a Son" in front of a studio audience as part of their four-night residency on late night talk show,  Jimmy Kimmel Live! . "Lux Aeterna" was also debuted as part of the band's "All Within My Hands" benefit concert last fall as well. These were the first-ever live performances of those  72 Seasons songs and the band also shot a three-song set for an April 25 TV broadcast in Amsterdam, playing the title track to the new record , as well as "Lux Aeterna" and "Sad But True."

Technically, it was the first time Metallica played "72 Seasons" live together in an official capacity (ie: other than presumably in rehearsals for the tour), but the video footage doesn't show an audience in attendance, so make of that what you will.

The tour kickoff, which also featured special guests Mammoth WVH (setlist here ) and Architects (setlist here ).

Set to open on April 29 are  Ice Nine Kills and Nightwish singer Floor Jansen , the latter of whom replaced Five Finger Death Punch while frontman  Ivan Moody continues to recover from surgery for three hernias he sustained during a music video shoot.

Metallica concert review: back-to-back shows melted faces at metlife.

Metallica's Kirk Hammett (L) and James Hetfield rock out onstage together.

Five decades into their illustrious career, Metallica hasn’t lost a step.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame group stopped by East Rutherford, NJ’s MetLife Stadium for a pair of concerts on Friday, Aug. 4 and Sunday, Aug. 6 as part of their ‘M72 Tour.’

As you may have expected, they didn’t disappoint.

Ryan Murphy, the New York Post’s resident Metallibanger, attended both shows and said the band “played everything you’d want to hear with no repeats over the two nights.”

“Even though they’re promoting their new record,” he continued, “they played all the fan favorites.”

For Murphy that included “Creeping Death,” “Seek and Destroy” and “Master of Puppets” on night one.

Night two’s standout tracks were “For Whom The Bell Tolls,” “One” and “Enter Sandman,” which many New Yorkers may recall was Yankees closer Mariano Rivera’s menacing entrance song over the course of his storied career.

Two songs truly stood out though. All Murphy could say about “Whiplash” and “Ride The Lightning” were “wow.”

For those wondering about the show’s layout, Metallica performed in a circular stage on the 50-yard line with a General Admission crowd — known as The Snake Pit — in the middle.

“This allowed the very active James Hetfield, Kirk Hammett and Rob Trujillo to move the drum set to the four corners of the stage,” Murphy shared. “No matter where you were, you got a decent view of the band.”

If you aren’t up close, Murphy noted that he “counted eight huge pillars with cylindrically-shaped monitors for more viewing.”

The concert experience

Other than the music, the 31-year-old Murphy observed that the crowd was made up of people in their 50s.

“A ton of dads with their kids, myself included. Yeah, I went with my dad.”

Metallica may have taken their fanbase into account when plotting this multi-day residency tour.

“Every show has a rest day in between, which is needed,” Murphy said. “The entire show plus their openers —  Pantera (with Zakk Wylde!) and Mammoth WVH on night one and Five Finger Death Punch and Ice Nine Kills on night two — is roughly five and a half hours.”

As a result, Murphy had an easier time than usual getting into the show since most fans trickled in closer to the evening’s headliner.

Still, “the merch lines were ridiculously long. That being said, the custom shirts they had for each show were cool.”

Metallica 2023-24 tour schedule

The tour is far from over.

Metallica still has two-day stays lined up  at venues all over the U.S. and Canada this year and next.

Want to find out if they’re coming to a city near you?

Check out  Metallica’s complete 2023-24 tour calendar here  for a closer look.

Power Trip Festival

The heaviest festival of the year is coming to  Indio, CA  this fall.

From Oct. 6-8, Metallica will join forces with AC/DC (performing live for the first time since 2016!), Judas Priest,  Tool ,  Guns N’ Roses  and  Iron Maiden  at the Empire Polo Grounds.

Need tickets for the three-day extravaganza?

You can pick Power Trip tickets up here .

Metallica opening acts

Here’s a little background on each of Metallica’s opening acts for nights one and two of the M72 Tour.

Pantera  are major headliners in their own right as well. Formed in 1981, the group has sold approximately 20 million records worldwide and has received four Grammy nominations over the past four decades. Just a few of their biggest hits include “Walk,” “Cowboys From Hell,” and “Cemetery Gates.”

Mammoth WVH  is Wolfgang Van Halen’s rock band. For those wondering, yes, Van Halen is the son of guitar legend Eddie Van Halen. In 2021, the group released its first album, “Mammoth WVH.” Prior to this run, the group co-headlined a tour with Dirty Honey in early 2022.

Five Finger Death Punch , originally from Las Vegas, slays. Active since 2005, the five-member outfit recently toured with Megadeth, The Hu, and Fire from the Gods. They’re not going anywhere anytime soon, either. Lead singer Ivan Moody recently said, “I can’t quit…I ain’t going anywhere,” in an interview with  Revolver .

Ice Nine Kills  has released six albums since their 2000 inception. In the 22 years since they got their start, the band has made a name for itself with their “horror-inspired lyrics.” Literature fans, in case you were wondering, the answer is yes. The group’s name is a reference to Kurt Vonnegut’s seminal 1963 novel “Cat’s Cradle.”

Huge hard rock tours in 2023

Although no tour this year will rock quite as hard as Metallica’s, many of the biggest names in metal will be on the road these next few months.

Here are just five tours that should turn the volume up all the way up to 11 in the near future.

•  Rob Zombie with Alice Cooper

•  Mötley Crüe & Def Leppard

•  Avenged Sevenfold

•  Disturbed

•  Mudvayne

We are very accustomed to hearing that many musicians have different rituals before getting on stage. Some may sound weird or superstitious , but they apparently help them concentrate on their live performances. Taking the stage is probably still thrilling for most musicians, and thus, these kinds of rituals and demands create a sort of relaxed atmosphere for them.

For instance, The Rolling Stones request cable or satellite television to watch cricket matches. The Foo Fighters members listen to Michael Jackson songs as they take shots of Jägermeister before every show. Another interesting ritual is Leonard Cohen getting on the stage after a glass of whisky and singing a Latin phrase meaning ‘I am poor, I have nothing.’

Most of us wish to learn what the musicians prefer to do before the shows, and the occasional revealment of these rituals and requests often satisfies our curiosity. As one of the biggest metal bands, Metallica’s pre-show habits will surely be surprising for most of you.

Metallica Demands Bacon At Every Meal And They Are Very Strict About It

metallica tour rider 2023

We mostly expect to hear some unusual things when it comes to pre-show rituals, but Metallica members have a very simple request, which is bacon. In the document released on The Smoking Gun website , there is a very detailed list of Metallica requests for their 2004 US Arena Tour.

It is a 24-page list, which looks like carefully prepared by the band. At the beginning of the document, Metallica members make it clear that they prefer nothing changed from that rider. It starts with general provisions like permits, health and safety, insurance, broadcasts, and special laws.

In the later sections, they inform the officials about their dressing room and office requests. They mostly demand large size rooms with some furniture in them. After some technical requests considering their instruments, Metallica members stated their general catering requirements .

On the first page of the catering rider, they say that they have six strict vegetarians in their crew, and it should be taken into consideration. There is a list of meals that Metallica members demand as breakfast, lunch, and dinner on the following pages. The breakfast list says that they require bacon and sausage. Still, there is a special note next to it with capital letters saying that ‘Bacon: very important that bacon be available at every meal and during day.’ Then, they keep on listing the other meals and beverages they require.

You may think that they just included this special note in the breakfast list because they like it. However, interestingly, they repeated the same request with capital letters in their lunch and dinner lists. It looks like Metallica members are very strict about this bacon issue, and they are determined to keep their habits. They want to make sure that bacon will be available for them in every meal. It seems surprising that they haven’t released a song about bacon yet.

Canadian rider Derek Gee celebrates podium finish in Criterium du Dauphine

Ottawa cyclist finishes third in key tuneup to tour de france.

Three male cyclists celebrate on a podium.

Social Sharing

Canadian rider Derek Gee celebrated his first ever WorldTour general classification podium Sunday, finishing third in the Criterium du Dauphine in Thones, France.

Slovenia's Primoz Roglic, a favourite for the Tour de France, held on to win the eight-day, 1,020.6-kilometre race by eight seconds over American Matteo Jorgenson with Gee another 28 seconds behind.

The Criterium du Dauphine is considered a key Tour de France warm-up race.

Eleven racers have won the race and the Tour de France in the same year, most recently Denmark's Jonas Vingegaard in 2023.

"A podium in one of the biggest stage races before one of the most important races of the season is a clear indication of Derek's abilities and we look forward to seeing what he can do down the line," said Israel-Premier Tech sports director Daryl Impey.

Destined for greatness: Canadian cyclist Dylan Bibic eyes Olympic medal

Gee credited his teammates for their support in a gruelling finale that included 3,640 metres of climbing and a final 9.4-kilometres ascent.

"I'm really glad I could do that because the boys gave me everything," an exhausted Gee said after the race. "I'm just really happy I finished that off."

Spain's Carlos Rodriguez won Sunday's 160.6-kilometre final stage, which started at Thieres and finished at Plateau des Glieres, with Jorgenson second and Gee third. Roglic was sixth.

The 26-year-old Gee from Ottawa was in a small lead group but was eventually dropped by Rodriguez and Jorgenson with a kilometre to go.

'Starting to sink in'

"All week I was nervous, waiting for the legs to give out," Gee said. "After the (finish) line I was suffering so much I couldn't enjoy it but now, it's all starting to sink in. There will be a lot of reflection after this. Right now I am just enjoying it as it is. But, it's been really cool.

"I was suffering on the final climb but as soon as I saw Roglic get dropped I thought 'Maybe I have good legs today' so I gave it a shot. Matteo (Jorgenson) said he was on the limit and couldn't pull through and pulled off and then I was immediately on the limit. Rodriguez and Jorgenson rode away and I couldn't do anything about that but I was really happy with the legs."

Fellow Israel-Premier Tech rider Hugo Houle, from Sainte-Perpetue, Que., finished 64th overall.

Gee, who went into Sunday's finale in third place overall, also placed fourth in the points race and sixth in the climbing category.

Roglic, a favourite for the Tour, won the penultimate stage to lead the overall standings by 62 seconds over Jorgenson.

Gee was another 11 seconds back, some 43 seconds ahead of Russian Aleksandr Vlasov.

Gee won Stage 3 on Tuesday, earning the right to wear the yellow leader's jersey in the general classification. He became the first Canadian to wear the leader's jersey since David Veilleux, who won the first stage in 2013 and held onto the lead for three days.

Weekend Rundown: Here's the biggest news you missed this weekend

Martin Lawrence addresses health concerns after ‘Bad Boys 4’ premiere: ‘I’m healthy as hell’

Martin Lawrence, left, and Will Smith strike a pose

Martin Lawrence  is assuring fans that he is healthy amid concern sparked by his “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” press tour.

The actor appeared on a recent episode of Hot 97’s “Ebro in the Morning” (via  Entertainment Weekly ), where the host asked him about rumors claiming he’s not healthy. A  video interview  where Lawrence appeared to slur his words a bit and an appearance at the “Bad Boys” premiere where some fans thought he looked unsteady as he held on to Will Smith for support sparked concern.

“Now Martin, everybody’s talking [about] you on the balcony waving at people, [you’re] looking around, where you’re looking around? Were you looking around like, ‘Yo, this is massive?’” host Ebro Darden asked. “Because people took it like there was something wrong with your health.”

Lawrence explained that he was only surprised by the crowd size at the premiere, saying: “I was like, oh, this is rock concert stuff. What the hell is going on? I was like, for a movie?”

When asked if there is “anything you want to say to the people because they’re concerned about your health,” Lawrence answered: “I’m fine. I’m in God’s hands. I’m blessed, you know? I’m glad to be waking up every day. I’m all good. No need for people to be concerned.”

Lawrence said later in the interview: “I’m healthy as hell. Stop the rumors!”

Fans’ worry for Lawrence could’ve been sparked by his previous medical history. The actor had a health scare in 1999 when he collapsed due to severe heat exhaustion and was put in a three-day coma.

“Bad Boys: Ride or Die” is the fourth entry in Lawrence and co-star Will Smith’s long-running action franchise.  Variety’s  critic Owen Gleiberman gave the sequel  a positive review , writing: “The two stars are in top form, and so past being too old for this shit that it almost seems young again.” The movie opens in theaters June 7.
