Matilda The Musical

Roald Dahl's beloved childhood story comes to life on stage. Matilda tickets are sure to please the whole family.

Matilda’s parents think she is a nuisance and she thinks, quite rightly, they are only interested in watching telly. Life is not much better at school, where the monstrous headmistress Miss Trunchbull terrifies both students and teachers alike. Then one day Matilda discovers she has a very special power and decides it's time the grown-ups were taught a lesson. Be warned, the children are revolting!

Inspired by the twisted genius of Roald Dahl, with original songs from comedian Tim Minchin and book by Dennis Kelly, Matilda the Musical at the Cambridge Theatre is the captivating new musical masterpiece from the Royal Shakespeare Company that revels in the anarchy of childhood, the power of imagination and the inspiring story of a girl who dares to change her destiny.

Winner of over 85 international awards, including 16 for Best Musical, and a whole host of five-star reviews, MATILDA THE MUSICAL continues to delight audiences of all ages.

The current Matilda the Musical London cast includes Isobel Hubble, Francesca McKeown, Sara Munday, and Olivia Wells sharing the title role with Hayden Tee (Miss Trunchbull), Gina Beck (Miss Honey), Holly Dale Spencer (Mrs Wormwood) and Rob Compton (Mr Wormwood).

Playing to packed houses and standing ovations since it opened Matilda tickets are some of the most sought after in London's West End, book your Matilda the Musical tickets today!

Review: Matilda the Musical at the Palace

Matilda the Musical may have taken seven years to come to fruition but it has definitely been worth the wait.

By Manchester's Finest | 24 September 2018

Since it opened in the West End in 2010 over 8 million people have flocked to see it and now the UK tour means even more get to enjoy the stage twist on the Roald Dahl classic.

Behind the musical version is the Royal Shakespeare Company, chosen by the Dahl estate to transform the children’s tale along with Dennis Kelly who turned it into a play and successful comedy writer Tim Minchin, who was given the green light to create the music and lyrics. Together they have turned the show into one of the most successful and award winning musicals of all time.

The Palace Theatre is now its home until late November and as soon as the curtain rose on press night you could feel Manchester audiences were in for something very special.

Ben Davies’ spectacular set was instantly revealed to show a proscenium arch made up of alphabet cubes and books but before you even got the chance to guess all the jumbled up words surrounding the edges a flurry of child performers burst onto the stage like a corks popping from champagne bottles – all fizzing with excitement and bubbling with energy.

matilda the musical tour manchester

Opening number ‘Miracle’ introduces the mischievous children of the cast as they light up the stage like true professionals and possess a sass and confidence far beyond their years (which at most must be just 12).

The show-stopping introduction sets the scene for the grand entrance of leading lady and pint sized performer Matilda, played on press night by Sophia Ally. Sophia is one of four girls who rotate the role during the run and commands the stage from start to finish with her incredible performance, delivery and sense of comedy timing.

As you would expect from a Dahl story there are some incredibly larger than life characters making their transition from page to stage and at the helm is the hugely horrid Headmistress Miss Trunchbull, played by Craige Els.

matilda the musical tour manchester

Having played the role for over three years in the West End Els is truly at home here, and has created a Trunchbull who is both frightening and hilarious in equal measures. His performance also includes more than a few nods to the traits of the shows lyricist Tim Minchin too!

Huge praise must also go to Sebastien Torkia as Mr Wormwood, Matilda’s dodgy car dealing Dad. Torkia is a joy to watch and his East End cockney wide boy caricature has you howling throughout.

He is ably supported by his equally ‘off the wall’ wife, Rebecca Thornhill, who puts more love and energy into her ballroom dancing and her passion for Latino dance partner Rudolpho than wasting time with her well educated daughter.

matilda the musical tour manchester

Director Matthew Warchus has created so many stand out scenes in the show it is hard to single out just one. If pushed, I would have to choose the slickly choreographed scene in which the alphabet wall takes shape around the performing cast, although for sheer audience reaction, the sight of Trunchbull throwing a disobedient kid into the sky to shrieks of horror and nervous laughter comes a very close second!

Matilda the Musical is such a treat and it will leave you marvelling at the huge amount of talent within the cast and production team. It is a modern musical masterpiece and is sure to leave you going home humming Minchin’s iconic ‘When I Grow Up’.

matilda the musical tour manchester

The standing ovation at the end of the show was both inevitable and well deserved. Quite rightly, the young Matilda (Sophia Ally) received the most cheers and I’m sure this will be the norm for the next 11 weeks it plays at Manchester’s Palace Theatre.

Trust me you would be more than a little bit ‘naughty’ to miss it!

school girl in spotlight surrounded by suitcases

You can still catch  Matilda i n the West End at the Cambridge Theatre, where we are now in our sixth successful year, and on tour in North America and Australia.

Dennis Kelly , (book) said: “It’s been a long time coming but I’m delighted that we get to take Matilda around the UK. We have some fantastic theatres in this country and Ireland, supported by smart, engaged audiences and we can’t wait to bring this crazy, messy, anarchic explosion of a show to them.”

Tim Minchin  (music and lyrics) said: “I - like millions of others - feel like Dahl is in my blood, because I grew up with his books. So to have contributed to a piece of work that brings one of his most famous stories to life is one of my life's great joys. I’m utterly thrilled that audiences in cities all across the UK and Ireland will now share and be part of Matilda’s story.”

Has your child got what it takes to claim a leading role in the hit musical Matilda?

Theatre bosses are holding auditions in Manchester to find the young stars of the show for the first ever UK tour of the show, based on Roald Dahl’s much-loved book.

They are casting for Matilda Wormwood herself - the extraordinary little girl whose talents are constantly belittled by her cruel parents and headmistress, the fearsome Mrs Trunchbull.

And they also hope to find talented young actors to play the roles of Matilda’s friend Bruce and all her classmates.

All children thinking of auditioning must be aged between 8 and 13, and must be under 4' 10” tall, and girls auditioning for Matilda must be under 4’ 3” and be aged from 8 -12.

And they need to love singing and dancing, of course!

They must be available for the entire rehearsal and performance period which is from December 2017 to September 2018.

But it would certainly offer the chance of a lifetime for the young acting hopefuls who win the role - starring in one of the most acclaimed new productions to ever open on the West End.

The show will head out on a tour of UK and Ireland venues, starting in Leicester in March 2018, and will be at Manchester's Palace Theatre from 18 September to 24 November 2018.

The audition was posted in an advert by the show’s producers, The Royal Shakespeare Company, this week.

In it, it says: “The RSC is looking for boys and girls to play Matilda, Bruce and their classmates for the UK and Ireland tour of Matilda the Musical. There is lots of singing involved as well as acting and even more dancing!”

The Manchester auditions take place on June 3, at an as-yet-to-be-named location.

They are also planning a London audition, but no details or date have been announced for that as yet.
