Southeast & northen wonders tours.

Vivemadeira presents our Southeast and North wonders Tour, our first day starts off from the reception area of your hotel at about 9h00 duration 8h. We make our way to southeast of the island from Funchal. The first stop is at the cliffs of Garajau where we stop to see the statue of Christ, some fantastic views from up there towards Funchal Bay.

We then make our way to the village of Santa Cruz, followed by a visit to Machico the very first village in Madeira. We then make our way to the most eastern peninsular, Baia de Abra where we will stop at two different viewpoints and we can see Ponta de São Lourenço in Caniçal, where the views are absolutely magical. From up here you can see the north and the south part of the island as well as Porto Santo and Desert Islands. We then make our way up and along the coast to Porto da Cruz. On this viewpoint you get some splendid views of the north coast especially over Porto da Cruz and the Eagles Rock which stands 580 meters high here you will have the possibility of visiting the “Northern Milling Company” for its sugar cane rum production, which is not always in time of the harvest or fermentation but still you can see all the procedure and history of one of the most important mills of the island.

Our next stop is Santana with its typical emblematic straw-roofed houses. There are people that to this day live in these type of houses. For those garden lovers you will find a wide variety of flowers on display right throughout the year. Next we stop in Faial where we normally stop for lunch. Lunch is at a restaurant called Grutas do Faial which means the caves of Faial. The restaurant is built into a rock and is described by all visitors as the highlight of the east tour.

After lunch we take the most scenic route in Madeira, driving through the Laurissilva forest to Ribeiro Frio. Here we could stop to do an optional short levada walk to the Balcões. We recommend that everyone tries this one out as it is a flat an easy walk to one of the most amazing views on the island. From here we carry on the scenic drive up the second highest peak on the island Pico do Arieiro (1818m). If you lucky you will be able to view a sea of clouds below and a clear blue sky above.

Our last stop on this east tour, before we descent down to Santo de Serra where we visit the market. At the end of the our east tour we make our way back down to Funchal via Gaula and Santa Cruz towards your hotel.

Southwest & North Coast Tour

Vivemadeira invite you to our Southwest & North Coast Tour, second day starts off from the reception area of your hotel 9h00 duration of 8h. The first stop will be at the fishing village of Câmara de Lobos. This typical fishing village, which is about 5 km outside of Funchal, is named after the Mediterranean Monk Seals. This picturesque village with its beautiful bay attracted the likes of Winston Churchill that spent his time painting the beautiful surroundings. Câmara de Lobos is also famous for its ‘poncha’, a mixture of lemon or orange juice, honey and sugarcane spirit, available at the many of its local taverns. Next we make our way to the highest sea cliff in Europe Cabo Girão. This absolutely amazing sea cliff which is the highest in Europe and second highest in the world (589m), will present you with breathtaking panoramic views, in a heartless glass balcony floor.

Our next stop on this west tour is Ribeira Brava. This was one of the first parishes of the island and its name came from the wild (Brava) river (Ribeira) that flow in this area when the rain falls heavily. We then make our way to Ponta do Sol, Calheta and then towards Jardim do Mar.

We visited several small villages with different peculiarities. We will always travel by the sea. It is the zone of Paul do Mar where we will climb a spectacular and curvy road towards Ponta do Pargo. Leaving from the Ponta do Pargo Headlight House we will ride towards Porto Moniz where are the famous natural sea water pools of the island of Madeira.

Our next stop is the village of Porto Moniz, which is famous for its series of natural volcanic pools created by reefs in the coastal lava rocks. These clear shallow pools surrounded by volcanic rocks are great for swimming, and attract both locals and tourists alike. Depending on the weather and the time of the year we stop here for lunch. The other alternative is our next stop Seixal. We go along this north coast with the narrow twisting road which is simply spectacular with the most fascinating scenery coming both from its hanging cliffs and from the energetic ocean crashing against the rocks below. There is a beautiful black sand beach where you could also swim.

After lunch we make our way to São Vincent, which is one of the most predominant villages of the northern coast of Madeira island. The volcanic caves which are a popular touristic attraction can be found here. Next we head south, up through the deep, green and narrow valleys of Encumeada and Serra de Agua, before making our way back to your hotel in Funchal.

Nun's Valley Our Historic Tour

The Nun´s Valley our Historic Tour starts off from the reception area at 9h00, duration 8h. In this last day of your journey we will visit Funchal city the historical center, and the center of the island which is called as Nun´s Valley . We will take you to the highest road on a fast uphill slope. We will visit one of the highest plateau Paul da Serra ( 1400 mtrs), after Funchal visit we  make our way up to Picos dos Barcelos where we make a short stop to enjoy one of the best views over Funchal. This view point is found at an altitude of 335m, between Stº Antonio and Stº Martinho.

We then make our way to Nuns Valley or Curral das Freiras, which is a small village nestled at the foot of a deep basin, surrounded by the rugged peaks of the surrounding mountains. Since Madeira is a volcanic island, this is regarded as the mouth of the volcano and hence the amazing surroundings. Once only accessible by foot (or donkey!) Nuns’ Valley can now be reached by road, although the village still remains fairly isolated.

The village of the Nuns’ Valley sits in a deep ravine, thought to have been caused either by gradual erosion, or volcanic activity. Dating back to the 16th century, the village was apparently formed in 1566 when nuns from the Santa Clara convent in Funchal arrived here seeking refuge, having fled from attacking pirates. The view from the top at Eira do Serrado is simply breath taking as is the the road leading there. We stay here for lunch absorbing the wonderful sites that are bestowed upon us. We then make our way down into the beautiful village where we get the chance to enjoy the views from the bottom upwards.

Then we descend towards Ribeira Brava to reach the amazing uphill Encumeada direction to Bica da Cana in Paul da Serra special place when the weather permits to overlook in the plateau all sea shore and the high mountains and where we ride to Fanal where we visited the lagoon that seems to be out of a movie by the centenary trees. Crossing this wonderful road we finish our trip in direction to Ribeira da Janela , São Vicente we make a small final stop for a for a deserved coffee or traditional drink and appreciate the last 3 days in this outstanding experience, then we make our way to Ribeira Brava and Funchal and finish this amazing journey full off wonderful memories.

I spent 3 wonderful days this October combining my love for off-road bikes with my love for sunny retreats. Everything is taken care off by your wonderful host Joao, who can switch between tour host & trainer at the flick of a starter button. This was great for me as I wanted to hit the trails but also get a chance to see some of the island. The tour is tailored to your abilities and requirements. I was happy to take things at a leisurely pace but if you wanted to scream around leaving a dust trail visible from space, then I can assure you Joao has the skills to craft such a dusty day out. Joao did a good job of keeping the knobblies dirt side, and road work was thankfully kept to a minimum. There is plenty of challenging terrain in Maderia to keep you smiling and great conversation to be had when you want to hit the stop switch and explain how you ‘would have cleared that’ if you were on your own bike…honest!! Weirdly there never seems to be any level ground in Madeira as you always seem to be going either up or down! I loved all 3 days and will definitely be returning for round 2 in 2021.

Awesome experience. I did a half-day session. I’d only done a few hours of motorbiking before so João took me through the basics and helped especially with clutch-work to get up steep slopes, and after that we did some riding around nearby hills with great views. João is patient, encouraging, and passionate. The session was challenging for me but also a lot of fun – next time I’m in Madeira I’ll definitely do a longer session!

Your madeira story: madeira island on a motorcycle.

Agata visited Madeira in the same period as me. If I knew that they were on Madeira, I would definitely invite them for a delicious Poncha and I would look closely at all passing… motorcycles and scooters, because that’s how Agata and Mariusz decided to explore the island.

Today, an interesting interview with Agata, creator of the Polish blog Okiemplecaczka , who will tell us all about their trip to Madeira in December , staying at the Dorisol Florasol and give us useful tips for, among others, renting motorcycles and scooters in Madeira.

SYTM: Tell us about your trip – when did you visit Madeira?

I visited Madeira with my husband during the Christmas and New Year period 2018 . Our plan was to spend Christmas Eve with the family, and for the next 7 days take a trip to a motorcycle-friendly place. Analysing the available options and destinations I mainly considered the date, location of the hotel, and things to see. Initially, we wanted to organize everything on our own, but in the end, we decided on a holiday package offered by the tour operator TUI. 

SYTM: Do you often travel abroad on a motorcycle?

Motorcycles are our passion, and we frequently explore the world this way. We own for example a Triumph Tiger 1200, and on this motorcycle, we visited an entire Romania.

However, Madeira is the third island that we visited on a rented motorbike. The same way we already had explored  Palma de Mallorca and Lanzarote . We love to spend our holidays this way, sunbathing and being lazy is not for us, we would probably die from boredom.

SYTM: Taking your own motorbike to Madeira by ferry is not an option, so your only option was a rental. Are there a lot of local motorcycle rental companies in Madeira?

Researching motorcycle rental companies online is always our first step when travel planning. Only then we focus on choosing the hotel, never the other way around. The hotel’s vicinity to the rental company is a priority, I could not imagine choosing a hotel located on the other coast.

Before arriving in Madeira I found a couple of booking websites; sort of booking engines where you book and pay a deposit, but never receive the address of the actual company. Once we arrived, we found only two rental companies offering motorcycle rentals in Funchal. Renting scooters is a different story, they are much more popular and it is easy to find one. 

SYTM: How do you rate their offer? Their prices? Which company would you recommend to others? 

Based on our own experience of renting motorcycles, it is better to book one after arriving, because the actual offering doesn’t usually match the information available online… For example, it was clearly stated on the website that the motorcycle had a top case (which was crucial for us, not only for storing the helmets while we visit the attractions, but also to serve as a support/backrest for the passenger). Unfortunately, in reality, not even one motorbike had it. In addition, most of the advertised motorcycles were not available. True, you can book it on one of the websites, but I do not trust any company that does not respond to questions by e-mail. 

Prices for renting motorcycles are unfortunately much higher than renting a car. They depend mainly on the capacity and the duration of the lease, but on average it is around 50 euro per day. In addition, a refundable deposit must be paid in cash or by card (I recommend cash because sometimes it takes a couple of days to have the funds deposited back on your credit card).

SYTM:  Which vehicles did you rent in Madeira?

We initially wanted to rent at  Rent a Scooter Funchal as we liked their options, especially the Honda NC750X. Unfortunately, it was closed for Christmas when we arrived… In our hotel room, we found a brochure from ESPAÇO MILÉNIO . One Honda CBF600 was available to rent, are we decided to go for it. We rented it for three days.     

Later on, we rented, for two days, a scooter  –  Sym Symphony ST 125cc from  Rent a Scooter Funchal .

SYTM: How would you describe roads in Madeira? Would you recommend renting a motorcycle to those who aren’t yet very experienced motorcycle drivers?

The quality of roads in Madeira is very good. However, they are very demanding: winding, sometimes very steep, and located very close to the edge. 

The scooter is great for moving within and around the city, but unfortunately, in my opinion, won’t be sufficient to discover the entire island. It is simply too weak and won’t go uphill and believe me, there are many steep roads in Madeira.

Discovering Madeira on a good motorcycle is another story. Madeira will be a perfect destination for experienced motorcycle lovers… driving on beautiful mountain roads on Madeira will be a great experience… Inexperienced drivers, however, might find it a bit challenging. 

The most challenging, but also the most beautiful route we took was the route to Pico do Arieiro . At first, we drove through fog with poor visibility and it felt like a gloomy horror film… but once we found ourselves above the cloud level, it was just jaw-dropping… We felt like we were driving in heaven…

SYTM: So to sum up; what are your best tips for renting motorcycles and scooters on Madeira? 

When choosing a motorcycle, focus on the overall technical condition and especially the condition of the tires. In order to prevent any problems with getting back your deposit, it is always a good idea to take a lot of pictures of the vehicle during the handover. You should take pictures of all the scratches and defects, even small ones. This tip is useful for renting all kinds of vehicles, not only motorcycles. 

Some motorcycle rental companies offer also helmets in the price of the vehicle. Since safety and comfort are vital for us, but the choice of rental helmets limited, we always take our own helmet with us. It is important to have a good helmet, which would not only fit and be comfortable but protect us during an accident. 

We always pack our full motorcycle outfit; our shoes, pants, jacket take an entire suitcase, but it does not matter. As I say, safety and comfort first. We used to pack also our helmets, but since it got damaged by the airline after our Lanzarote trip, we now take it as our hand luggage. It was allowed to take it on board, but we checked that with the airline beforehand.

SYTM: You stayed at the Dorisol Florasol Hotel  in Funchal; How would you rate this hotel?

Very good. It is a 3-star hotel located in the Lido district. We stayed on the 3rd floor in a studio room. From the room balcony, you had (partially) a view of the ocean. The room renovated, the kitchenette was fully equipped (there was even a corkscrew). Breakfasts were tasty, hotel parking was available. There were no evening animations,  but it did not bother us, because we spent the evenings in the centre of Funchal. I recommend for everyone whose main purpose is to have active holidays in Madeira. 

SYTM: So… Did Madeira meet your expectations? 

I read a lot about the island and I prepared an itinerary. However, the reality exceeded my expectations. Madeira offers beautiful views, and if you like hiking, two weeks is, in my opinion, the absolute minimum. We stayed on Madeira for seven active days, and we did not visit everything we planned. SYTM: Which are your TOP 3 attractions of Madeira? 

It’s really difficult to choose only 3. Everything is worth a visit. For me, the Toboggan ride from Monte was something special (it’s probably the only place in the world where a tourist can take a sleigh ride on streets with no snow).

Ponta de São Lourenço enchanted me with colours (especially during the sunrise), and the New Year’s fireworks display was one of the most beautiful moments of my life (I really recommend spending New Year’s Eve in Madeira ).

SYTM: And the other way around: What did not impress you at all? 

Somehow I was not convinced by the Chinese and Japanese elements mixed with the landscape of Madeira at the Monte Palace Tropical Gardens . Out of these two biggest botanical parks in Funchal, I found the Jardim Botânico to be a much more pleasant place. More peaceful, quiet, less crowded…

SYTM: You favourite Madeira food and drinks…?

I love seafood. Grilled Octopus was the best main course I’ve had on Madeira. Lapas (limpets) served in shells, baked with garlic butter and sprinkled with lemon, are an excellent appetizer. I liked Poncha, no matter which tastes. However, we did not like the taste of Madeira wine.

SYTM: Did you have any funny moments on Madeira, any interesting encounters with the locals?

A friend recommended us Bar o Avo in Funchal , which owner collects beers and scarves of football teams from around the world (this is the largest collection in Europe – currently about 1,800 pieces). We handed the owner a scarf from a local team (GKS Tychy) brought from Poland.

To thank us, the restaurant owner showed us around the premises, in particular, all the “exhibits” from our country, he treated us with dinner and local drinks… Such a nice memory, it was nice to make someone happy with such a small gift.

Madeira Island Motorcycle Tours  

What type of payments do you accept .

A 50% non refundable deposit for the motorcycle tour is required upon booking . This can be paid by bank transfer to UK or Portuguese account or by Paypal .

 Whats your policy for damages ?

Each bike will be inspected before the tour, scratches etc are inevitable on any bike, I will not be going over the bike with a magnifying glass! But any actual breakages must be paid for.

What should i bring with me ?

Driving licence ! Although i do have helmets  , i would always advise to bring your own as hand luggage 

I do have some jackets and gloves available but obviously bringing your own guarantees the best fit Bring your own boots and trousers ( armoured jeans are ideal as i do supply light weight waterproofs with each bike )

Whats the weather going to be like ?

Madeira has an excellent climate for motorbiking , of course it can rain and this keeps the island green !

The island has mountains of 6000 feet [1800 meters] so the temp can vary dramatically, possible 1 Degree per 100 meters in winter , about half that in summer [ layers of clothing are the key]

There are 26 recognized micro climates across the island so the weather can vary valley to valley

What is the best order to book ?

If you are coming to the island exclusively for a biking holiday then please contact me for availability of bike/s before booking your flight  If the biking is just going to be part of your holiday and you are flexible with your tour days then please let me know your holiday dates.

Can you help with any other aspects of my holiday ?

Yes, If you would like advice on any aspects of your trip, accommodation/flights etc i would be happy to advise.

What are the roads like ?

Generally good, very steep at times and some of the higher mountain roads can be uneven. A biking holiday here is for the more experienced biker with a head for heights,it is not a high mileage , high speed place but more suited to a relaxed pace with regular stops to enjoy the stunning views

What types of accommodation are available ?

   From top hotels like Reids Palace , where Winston Churchill used to stay to Air bnbs and glamping , misty mountain retreats to seaside villas , every budget and taste is catered for on the island.
