Lion Brewery Co

Our Lion Brewery Co travel series, and a tale of expansion.

  • October 9, 2023

lion red brewery tour

We recently put up a collection of ‘Lion Travel Posters’ in our brewpub and shared them with the world, and people love them. We do too, of course. But to us, each one also represents a key milestone in our story – and I’d like to share these stories with you today.

It would be inappropriate to begin without thanking the inimitable James Diaz, our head of branding, who created and designed this wonderful series. We were lucky enough to convince James (or Jimmy, as we know him) and his wonderful partners at BlackMoon Studio to join us on this journey before we’d even sold a single beer, and there’s not been a drop of regret at that decision.

We meet Jimmy in Singapore, which is of course where our part in Lion Brewery Co’s history begins. For those unaware, Lion Brewery Co is in fact a heritage brewery, with a fascinating past that dates back to 1836. You can read more about it here .

As for us, after years of homebrewing in our hot kitchens, making beers that we want to drink – flavourful, sessionable brews well-suited to the tropical climate we experience every day – we perfect a recipe that has many names over time, but comes to be known as Straits Pale Ale . Our first professional batch is brewed in October 2018, and by November we are officially selling in Singapore .

lion red brewery tour

Fast-forward through six months; an exhausting, invigorating time, which we spend running around the island, hiring rent-a-bomb cars, chucking coolers in the boot of said cars and going door-to-door. We become fearless beer-slingers, resilient in the face of rejection, and we speak to hundreds of bars, restaurants and pubs every week. Things go rather well, and many of these doors open to us.

Just as we are about to unleash our Island Lager into the world, our Straits Pale Ale lands upon its second shore in Cambodia . We are doing some of our brewing there already, and we make friends with a few young guys who have just started a craft distribution company. From Phnom Penh to Siem Reap to Kampot, our beers start popping up around the Khmer Kingdom, and though it remains a small market for independent and craft beers, it’s one we cherish, as our first overseas venture.

lion red brewery tour

Then Covid hits. The world shuts down, and reality becomes a sludge of trivia and quizzes on Zoom, random masked encounters, and a deluge of boredom and anxiety… but one other thing it does do, is provide the impetus for one of our founders, Harry, to move to the UK. With his own personal homecoming, we are able to bring life to the heritage story, back where Lion Brewery Co originated. Harry and Jack set up Lion UK in London together, and thus begins our adventure into a third country.

Out of darkness cometh light…

lion red brewery tour

The world recovers, slowly .

2021 folds into 2022, and at the beginning of this year we take our first steps into Indonesia . I grew up in Indonesia, so it’s always been a part of our quest to bring the beer here, too. We find a great partner who has spare brewing capacity, and decide to produce the beer locally in Bali, guaranteeing that we put the freshest product into the market possible. We make Bali our home, and bit by bit, we venture across the islands, heading for Jakarta first, and then spreading our beery goodness to Lombok, and Gili, and other Javanese cities.

The archipelago is vast, but we have time, and we leave no stone unturned, curious as ever about just how far we can take this thing. We work with a few different distributors as we come to grips with the market, until we find the ideal distribution partner and teammate in 2023. We also package our beers with a twist, using aluminium bottles, which people instantly take to .

lion red brewery tour

These aluminium bottles lead us to Hong Kong , when VP, the founder of Brews Over Borders, reaches out to me. Brews Over Borders are the newly-formed arm of a large import-export business, and they are besotted with our aluminium bottle branding. Funnily enough, we aren’t able to work out a way to get aluminium bottles to them, but once they try our beers they are besotted with those too, and we begin shipping Lion to the Fragrant Harbour at the beginning of 2023.

lion red brewery tour

We launched Lion Brewery Co in Dubai a few months ago, and almost five years in, are selling in six countries across two continents with more markets on the way.

What can we learn from our journey thus far? That growth is a combination of good planning and good fortune. That it pays to be discernibly different, both in product and in your storytelling. That relationships matter, more than almost anything else. And that part of why we love what we do is because we get to bring Lion Brewery Co to amazing places around the globe, and call it work.

Now time for a cold one.

Cheers, Will

Lion Red: The History and Revival of New Zealand’s Iconic Lager

Since its inception in 1907, Lion Red has been a beloved beer in New Zealand, capturing the hearts and palates of beer enthusiasts throughout the country. Brewed by Lion Breweries, a part of the Lion Nathan group, Lion Red is a full-bodied malt flavored beer that offers a perfect balance of hop bitterness and malty goodness.

One of the first things that catches your eye about Lion Red is its vibrant red label, which is fitting for a beer that has become synonymous with its bold and distinctive flavor. Pouring a beautiful amber-tinted golden color, Lion Red entices you with its inviting appearance.

Upon taking a whiff, you are greeted with a delightful malty aroma that immediately piques your interest. It is followed by a soft fermented estery sweetness, which adds a touch of complexity to the overall experience.

Now, let's talk about the taste. Lion Red can be best described as a lager -style beer with a little something extra. While it still falls into the realm of an adjunct lager, it boasts a slightly bigger bready and fruity malt backbone compared to its counterparts. This gives Lion Red a unique character and sets it apart from the crowd.

But what many fans of Lion Red might not know is the intriguing story behind the beer. Lion Red was once the biggest seller in the SAB group during the '70s and early '80s, solidifying its place as a true Kiwi favorite. However, as the '90s rolled around, its popularity began to wane, especially when compared to Castle sales. Eventually, Lion Red was taken off the shelves in 2000, leaving many loyal fans longing for its return.

Despite its temporary absence, Lion Red has managed to maintain its status as a beloved classic among beer enthusiasts. Its rich history and distinctive flavor have endeared it to the hearts of many, making it a beer that holds a special place in the memories of those who have enjoyed it throughout the years.

With an alcohol content of 4.0%, Lion Red is a beer that can be enjoyed on various occasions. Whether you're kicking back with friends, enjoying a barbecue, or simply savoring a cold one after a long day, Lion Red is a reliable choice that never fails to satisfy.

Lion Red is more than just a beer. It is a symbol of New Zealand's brewing heritage and a testament to the enduring love affair between Kiwis and their favorite brews. With its full-bodied malt flavor, balanced hop bitterness, and a touch of sweetness, Lion Red offers a taste that is both familiar and distinctive. So, the next time you're looking for a classic New Zealand lager to accompany your good times, be sure to reach for a Lion Red and experience the magic for yourself.

What Does Lion Red Taste Like?

I remember the first time I tried Lion Red. I was at a local pub with some friends, and I decided to give it a go. As I looked at the red label on the bottle, I couldn't help but wonder what this beer would taste like. Would it live up to its vibrant appearance?

As I poured the beer into a glass, I noticed its golden, amber hue. It had a certain richness to it that immediately caught my attention. The color alone made me feel intrigued and excited to take my first sip.

Bringing the glass to my nose, I took in the aroma of Lion Red. It was a rather mild scent, with a hint of malt sweetness and a faint touch of spicy hops . The aroma wasn't overpowering, but it gave me a glimpse of what was to come.

Taking that first sip, I was met with a familiar taste. Lion Red reminded me of a classic adjunct lager, but with a slight twist. The malt backbone had a bready and fruity character that added a touch of complexity to the beer. It wasn't overly sweet, but it had enough flavor to keep me interested.

I continued to savor each sip, letting the flavors dance on my palate. The beer had a smooth and crisp mouthfeel, which made it easy to drink. It wasn't too heavy or too light, but just right for a casual evening at the pub.

As I finished my glass of Lion Red, I couldn't help but appreciate its simplicity. It wasn't a groundbreaking or revolutionary beer, but it delivered on its promise. It was a straightforward and enjoyable brew that I would gladly have again.

Lion Red is a beer that lives up to its name. Its red label hints at the amber-tinted, golden pour that awaits you. The aroma offers a subtle blend of malt sweetness and spicy hops. The taste is reminiscent of a classic adjunct lager, with a slightly bigger bready and fruity malt backbone. It's a beer that doesn't try to be overly complex or fancy, but rather delivers a straightforward and enjoyable drinking experience. So, if you're looking for a casual brew to enjoy at the pub or at home, Lion Red might just be the one for you.

What Percent Alcohol Is Lion Red?

Lion Red is a New Zealand lager-style beer brewed by Lion Breweries, which is part of the Lion Nathan group. I recently had the opportunity to try Lion Red, and I must say, it was quite enjoyable. The beer has a smooth and crisp taste, making it perfect for a refreshing drink.

Now, let's get to the question at hand – what percent alcohol is Lion Red? Lion Red has an alcohol content of 4.0%. This means that for every 100 milliliters of Lion Red beer, there is 4 milliliters of alcohol. It is worth noting that this alcohol content falls within the range of a standard lager-style beer.

The 4.0% alcohol content of Lion Red strikes a good balance between a light and moderate strength beer. It is not too strong, allowing you to enjoy a couple of beers without feeling too intoxicated. However, it still provides a decent kick and flavor that beer enthusiasts appreciate.

I remember enjoying a Lion Red on a warm summer evening. The low alcohol content made it a great choice for a casual drink without getting too buzzed. The beer's smooth texture and mild bitterness complemented the relaxed atmosphere perfectly.

Lion Red is a popular choice among beer drinkers in New Zealand. Its moderate alcohol content makes it suitable for social gatherings, barbecues, or simply enjoying a beer after a long day. It's a beer that can be enjoyed by both seasoned beer enthusiasts and those who prefer a lighter beverage .

Lion Red is a New Zealand lager-style beer with an alcohol content of 4.0%. It offers a smooth and crisp taste, making it a great choice for casual drinking. Whether you're enjoying it at a social gathering or simply unwinding after a long day, Lion Red provides a refreshing and flavorful experience. So, if you're looking to try a quality New Zealand beer, give Lion Red a shot!

Lion Red is a well-established New Zealand beer that has been brewed since 1907. Known for its full-bodied malt flavor and balanced hop bitterness, Lion Red offers a unique drinking experience. The beer has a malty aroma with hints of soft fermented estery sweetness.

The name Lion Red is derived from the distinctive red label that adorns the bottle. Its amber-tinted golden pour adds to its visual appeal. While the aroma may be relatively subtle, featuring a generic malt sweetness and faint spicy hops, the taste is where Lion Red truly shines.

With a slightly larger bready and fruity malt backbone than your average adjunct lager, Lion Red offers a more robust and flavorful drinking experience. It manages to strike a perfect balance between the traditional lager-style beer and an enhanced malt profile.

However, it is worth noting that Lion Red's popularity has seen some fluctuations over the years. Once the top-selling beer in the SAB group during the 70s and 80s, its appeal began to decline in the 90s compared to Castle sales. This led to its removal from shelves in 2000.

Despite this, Lion Red remains a beloved and iconic beer in New Zealand, with its loyal fan base appreciating its unique flavor profile and long-standing history. Whether enjoyed at a bar, a backyard barbecue, or a social gathering, Lion Red continues to be a staple choice for beer enthusiasts looking for a distinct New Zealand lager experience.

Lion Red is a testament to New Zealand's brewing heritage and a testament to the art of creating a well-balanced and flavorful beer. With its rich history and dedicated following, Lion Red is sure to continue making its mark in the New Zealand beer scene.

Lion Brewery Co offers a brewery tour in the heart of town

Lion Brewery Co offers a brewery tour in the heart of town

Like all things craft, things can get a bit hairy if you're starting out on your craft beer journey without the webpage or pint miles under your belt.

But one option – a more direct one – is to check out Lion Brewery Co's Brewery Tour at Thirty Six Brewlab & Smokehouse, located at 36 Club Street, formerly home to Little Creatures.

Despite its modest size, Lion Brewery has the capacity to carry out contact brewing i.e. commissioned brew orders from other establishments.

Couple this with the fact that the brewers have a culture of experimenting with new recipes, and as such, the Brewlab Brewery Tour is as good as any a place to pick the brains and experience of the craftsmen; be it about the basics of brewing to evaluating the plausibility of crazy recipe ideas you have in mind.

Or if you're already acquainted with some of the beers at Thirty Six Brewlab & Smokehouse, you can learn how they came about.

At $80 per person, the brewery tour costs $80 per head, and you need to make a booking.

The package includes:

  • Brewlab tour where you can learn and ask questions
  • Tasting flight of six refreshing craft beers
  • 10 per cent off all full-priced food items on the Thirty Six Brewlab & Smokehouse menu
  • 1 x Brewlab Pi Glass (each) to bring home
  • 1 x Lion Brewery Co Trucker Cap (each)

The flight of six craft beers are Island Lager, Straits Pale Ale, Something Something APA Pale Ale, The Boss IPA, Blackened Earth (Nitro) and New England Session IPA.

The one thing somewhat universal is that they are all 'easy' to drink – even the Blackened Earth stout – so newcomers can get acquainted with different styles of beers without being overwhelmed.

Island Lager (Pilsner / German / 4.7 per cent ABV) is a veritable thirst quencher.

Unpasteurised, it's dry-hopped with Halletau Blanc, contributing to a faint elderflower and pine aroma.

You'll quaff plenty of this on a hot day.

Straits Pale Ale (Pale Ale / American / 4.5 per cent ABV) is a light pale ale that kind of feels like an alternative to the Pilsner if you want a thirst quencher.

Citra hopped at both stages for refreshing citrus notes and is very 'sessionable'.

Something Something APA (Pale Ale / American / 5.5 per cent ABV) is an experimental brew that became a staple owing to its popularity.

Made with predominantly Citra and Simcoe hops with a touch of Cascade.

What really sets this apart is the unusual transition from a citrus and pine party to a malty finish.

The Boss IPA (IPA / American / 5.9 per cent ABV) is single-hopped with Mosaic and brewed with Voss Kveik super yeast.

Aside from the usual citrus notes, The Boss is most distinct for its berry aromas, but the ensemble is balanced.

Blackened Earth (Stout / American / 4.5 per cent ABV) is an Earth Day brew made without carbon dioxide.

This stout is light-bodied and with a trace of low hop bitterness.

Pretty accessible and will appeal to those who love Guinness.

New England Session IPA (IPA / New England / 4.8 per cent ABV) is made with a blended base of rolled oats, flaked wheat and malted barley, and dry-hopped with Mosaic and Amarillo hops.

Juicy and refreshingly light.

Brewery Tap

A Sleeping Giant

Our now Managing Director, Steve Nuttall, first came across the Joule’s trademark when he was a young Marketing Manager working for Bass Brewers around 1990. Joule’s was always in the back of his mind, it irritated him that such an astonishing brand was left, literally, on the shelf. He made a call to an old friend, still in the marketing department and asked if Bass Brewers would sell the trademark, which they did, 18 years later…

The 4th Joule’s Brewery

In 2010 as soon as they had finished building the new Joule’s Brewery [technically the fourth, the first one was in Salford, the second created by Francis in Stone, prior to John making the third, obviously the largest] we looked to find a pub so we could have a presence in the brands home town of Stone. To find out more about the now 4th Joule’s Brewery head over to the Joules Brewery website .

Sympathetically Restored

The pub dates back to 1623 and has been sympathetically restored to encompass the new Brewery which has been built on a half-acre site behind the ancient pub. The Red Lion is a true reflection of the Joule’s Trade Mark and we have designed the brewery around it.

Robert ‘Mouseman’ Thompson of Kilburn

The ‘Mouseroom’ was carefully installed between the Brewery and Tap in 2010 with fantastic Mouseman panelling as the centrepiece of our hospitality room. We have a philosophy in the way we go about restoring our Taps, we use natural materials and local Craftsmen to help us do the work. We use the best materials we can lay our hands-on and we find the more natural the material, the better, as it lasts, and it gains a lustre. These materials have been around forever, so it suits our style and with over half our Pubs being listed buildings then it suits them too. We use oak as our timber, the colour, texture and patina is unique. In total, the Tap has 7 carved mice and the only nodding mouse the Mouseman ever crafted. Over the years, we have added a few more pieces, 3 Mouseman church pews as well as some furniture from Mouseman apprentices known as the ‘Yorkshire critters’ who each carved their signatures [look out for Gnomes, Beavers & Lizards].

BP Portrait Award Winning

To celebrate the people who helped bring Joule’s to Market Drayton in 2010, the Directors of the Brewery commissioned renowned artist Andrew Tift to paint 8 Craftsmen, each representing their trade. Andrew Tift normally works on portraits of the rich and famous; Tony Benn, Neil Kinnock, and Ken Livingstone among others. Winner of the BP portrait award and nationally recognised, Andrew is famously slow, as his work is meticulous, so the Brewery has been sitting patiently, the complete work is yet unfinished. The whole commission will be done over several years unveiling the Monks one by one as they are completed. Well worth a visiting soon slipped away…

74 Foot Below

In the main bar, tucked around the corner is the original well and water source for the site, which the original Red Lion Inn would have used as the main watering point. Now it’s glazed over and you can stand (if you dare) and stare down to the illuminated watery depths below. The well is fed by an aquifer that runs between Stone and Market Drayton, the very water that Joule’s Brewed with at the 2nd and 3rd Brewery and today at our 4th site.

Brewed a stones throw away

There is a large beer yard at the heart of the Brewery & Tap, central to the whole site. As you sit outside you can see through the large windows into the Brew House and the Mouseroom, certainly a great nosey spot. You might even bump into one of our Brew team found sampling their brews after a hard day’s work, they’re always happy to chat. Always on Tap, Joule’s Pale Ale, Slumbering Monk, Pure Blonde and our English craft lager Green Monkey, alongside our rotating seasonal ale and cold craft beer. All brewed in Market Drayton with pure Shropshire mineral water.
