What to Know

Not even Ridley Scott's gorgeously realized set pieces can save Legend from its own tawdry tale -- though it may be serviceable for those simply looking for fantasy eye candy.

Legend Trailer (1986)

The story is set "once, long ago" in a world of unicorns, princesses, fairies, and demons. Cruise plays Jack O' The Green, a woodland dweller who takes Princess Lily (Sara) to see the last of the living unicorns. But temptation and fate cause the world to freeze over when the male unicorn is seriously wounded and its horn broken off and stolen, and the female unicorn and Lily are kidnapped by evil goblins. Ultimately, it is Jack (with the help of a group of fairies and Elves) who must save Lily from the demonic, Satan-like Lord of Darkness (Curry), who wants to take Lily as his bride.

A link to the past.

Very strong chance that this may be the most visually appealing movie as far as my tastes go—beautiful on all fronts with lush scenery, hypnotic visual atmos soundwaved with euphoric tones courtesy of Tangerine Dream, the best goblins and melty faced creatures I’ve ever seen, and the single scariest image from my youth that I would eventually become obsessed with—Darkness.

A friend recently said that this will probably be the best Legend of Zelda movie that we’ll ever get and I’m inclined to agree. Hits all the beats I look for in a movie like this without being 4 hours long which almost gives the the vapors as much as that TD score. I was…

What else do you people want? This fucking thing has:

- Tim Curry wrapped in a thousand pounds of sexy latex. - Tom Cruise hugging a fox. - A Tangerine Dream score played with one elbow. - Lengthy unicorn pornography. - "I could eat her brains like jam." - Tom Cruise wearing a scale mail dress. - There's a fucking character named Honeythorn Gump. - Mia Sara, nailing her performance and still being the second prettiest. - A swamp witch played by Robert "Innerspace Cowboy" Picardo. - Tom Cruise squatting. A lot. - Billy Barty, being a goddamn delight. - A sex dungeon made by Disney. - An entire sequence devoted to throwing enormous frisbees. - The plot of at least three D&D campaigns I've played. - A way cooler fairy than that Julia Roberts Hook garbage.

Anyone who has more than a passing familiarity with my reviews, should be aware of the fact that I don't believe in objective film analysis. My reviews and ratings are an expression of my subjective feelings on a film at that particular moment in time. But, even if I did review films objectively, this is one of those films where I would find such a task impossible. This was one of those defining films for me. As with Alien and Blade Runner , there's just something about the aesthetic of Ridley Scott's early output that resonated with me in my formative years. It's one of those films I can watch endlessly and, every time I do, for 89 minutes, I feel…

a rare ornate gem of a film, easily among the best of ridley scott's work, back when his visuals were lush & overwhelming in detail instead of stringent and aseptic. legend coasts along on intuitive ethereal vibes, a tactile set-bound fantasia of slime-slick goblins, capricious fairy glamour and deliriously fervid colors, all sweetly wrapped within the buttery-smooth synths of tangerine dream's perfect score. the kind of movie where no one wears pants and tom cruise's face is constantly smothered in a thick sheen of glitter. a pure sensory experience.

Action!: The Scott Brothers – How To Get Screwed By Spielberg Twice W/ Ridley Scott

The movie that feels like a slap in the face and a “fuck you” to everyone who told Ridley he shouldn't use the unicorn in Blade Runner.

After having this movie on Prime for almost a year now, and hearing about the movie for quite some time, I finally decided to watch this somewhat bizarre fantasy movie that followed the iconic "Blade Runner". In a sense, it feels like a radical departure from the film noir, but then you realize that's not entirely the case. The film's cinematography and camera work share a lot in common with his previous project. With his display of creativity…

Movie Reviews

Tv/streaming, collections, great movies, chaz's journal, contributors.

Now streaming on:

Recent movies have created sort of a generic fantasy universe of Muppets and swamps, strange beasts and evil tyrants, damsels and heroic lads, and ancient prophecies and mythical legends. It's a world inspired by ingredients from "Lord of the Rings," the "Star Wars" movies, Dungeons and Dragons gamesmanship, tales of King Arthur and the latest gimmicks from the special-effects people.

In a movie that works, these ingredients can be exciting and delightful. "Legend" does not work.

The movie is a British big-budget, special-effects extravaganza by Ridley Scott , the director of " Alien ." It tells of a time long, long ago, when unicorns roam the Earth and the powers of light and darkness are at war. An evil prince named Darkness lives in caverns far beneath the Earth, scheming to blot the sun out of the lives of all the planet's creatures and to rule the gloom forever.

Earth itself is a sylvan place, filled with flowers and little glades and grassy clearings - but also with dread swamps and moldy fens. Young lovers can kiss for an afternoon in a bath of sunshine, but fearsome storms come up suddenly and lash the land with their fury. A race of evil little druids lives in the woods, and they spread mischief wherever they venture. Their favorite pastime is frightening the unicorns.

Into this setting come our heroes, Jack and Lili. Jack ( Tom Cruise ) is a hero whose mission in life is to vanquish Darkness and allow the sun to prevail. Lili ( Mia Sara ) is the young woman he meets and falls in love with, but she is lured into the underworld and seduced by an exotic priestess into seemingly becoming evil. Will Jack save Lili and defeat Darkness? Or will the movie end unhappily? Can we vote more than once? Let it be said that "Legend" is an impressive technical achievement. Scott is a perfectionist who takes infinite pains to make things look right.

The problem is, the world of "Legend" is itself wrong for this material. To some degree, this is a fairy tale, and it needs a certain lightness of tone, a plucky cheerfulness, to work. Like many recent sword and sorcery movies, it is so effective in rendering evil, so good at depicting the dire, bleak fates facing the heroes, that it's too dreary and gloomy for its own good.

Performances tend to get lost in productions like this. I particularly noticed how easily Cruise got buried in the role of Jack.

Here is the talented young actor from " Risky Business ," where he came across as a genuine individual, and this time he's so overwhelmed by sets and special effects that his character could be played by anybody.

Tim Curry , from " The Rocky Horror Picture Show ," makes an effective Darkness; I liked his style. But, once again, the makeup people have done such a good job with his blazing eyes and gigantic horns that, in a way, almost any actor could be lurking inside there (only Curry's sensuous lips give him away).

Despite all its sound and fury, "Legend" is a movie I didn't care very much about. All of the special effects in the world, and all of the great makeup, and all of the great Muppet creatures can't save a movie that has no clear idea of its own mission and no joy in its own accomplishment.

After Chrissy Teigen wound up in a neck brace earlier this month, John Legend is opening up about how the injury happened, and how is wife is feeling now.

Legend walked the red carpet ahead of Monday's live episode of The Voice , where the artist spoke with ET's Cassie DiLaura. Legend addressed some selfies Teigen posted last Monday showing herself in a neck brace after she said she'd tried doing hand stand.

"She hurt her neck trying to be, like, an acrobat -- which she's not," Legend said. "Sometimes she's daring and she'll try things."

"I think may have been watching Luna too much," Legend said of the couple's 8-year-old daughter . "[Luna has] been doing like real gymnastics. But [Chrissy] got in her head that she could try this and it was not a good idea."

While Teigen did end up getting hurt and needing some neck support after the injury, Legend assured fans, "She's much better now."

Legend -- who also shares sons Miles, 5, and Wren, 10 months, and daughter Esti, 1, with Teigen -- recently brought his two eldest kids with him to see a live episode of The Voice , and the proud dad said they had an incredible timing being a part of the magic.

"Oh they loved it! They really had a blast," Legend said. "They wanted to come today but Luna was sick and didn't go to school. And I'm like, 'You're not coming to The Voice if you didn't go to school.' But yeah, we'll probably bring her back next Monday."

When asked if she'll walk the red carpet, Legend said, "You know, she's pretty with it. She could probably handle some interviews."

New episodes of The Voice season 25 air Mondays and Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on NBC.

Glen Powell attends A Toast To Texas Film Honoring Glen Powell at Troublemaker Studios on May 16, 2024 in Austin, Texas.

Glen Powell might just be a perfect man — at least, that’s how his former castmates and collaborators describe the Top Gun: Maverick actor.

Powell received lavish praise while attending his Texas Hall of Fame induction hosted by the Austin Film Society on Thursday night, an event timed to the upcoming release of the actor’s Netflix movie Hit Man , which reunites Powell and his Everybody Wants Some!! writer-director Richard Linklater .

Arjona referenced the recent “summer of Glen Powell” headlines, which refer to the 35-year-old starring in Hit Man (which has a 96 percent on Rotten Tomatoes) and then, a month later, the highly anticipated sequel Twisters .

“I want to make something really clear: This isn’t your summer, Glen, this is the Glen Powell decade,” Arjona declared. “[Glen] is not just incredibly good looking with like 13 abs — I don’t know, I personally haven’t counted. He shape shifts and it’s impossible to predict what he’ll do next. He’s a creator. He’s a writer and producer. He’s funny and, man, is he smart. He’s one of the hardest working people I know. But most importantly, he is a good person. He doesn’t like winning on his own. He wins as a team and never makes it about himself. Glen, you’re pretty close to perfect, my friend. You light up everyone around you. And if there’s one thing that bothers me about you is that I didn’t meet you sooner.”

Arjona told the audience that since she didn’t have anything but “beautiful things to say” about her co-star, she phoned his sister looking for some gossip. Powell’s sister, Leslie, told her a story about when she was in third grade and she asked her older brother to join her on stage for her tap dancing performance.

“It’s an age when kids usually start caring what others think and want to be cool,” she said. “But not you. You didn’t care about being cool. You cared about what was important to her. You always put others first, both in your personal life and in your career.”

“Congratulations Glen on the incredible honor of being inducted into the Film Hall of Fame, in the country of Texas,” he dryly quipped. “It was a great experience working with you on Top Gun: Maverick and to see all that you have created since. And Glen, I have to say your Texas-sized talent is only matched by your Texas-sized heart. I look forward to working with you again. Enjoy the rest of your evening, and enjoy this well deserved celebration of you, my friend.”

While his Hit Man co-writer and director Linklater praised Powell’s “most determined to work ethic you’ll ever encounter” and noted he’s “just a truly great guy and fun to be around. Like, what is a movie star? It’s a person you want to hang out with. Well, that’s Glen — a person you never get tired of being around.”

In Hit Man (trailer below), Powell plays a teacher who also works part time for the New Orleans police as an undercover fake hit man for hire, whose life is complicated when he falls in love with a woman who wants to kill her husband. The film (which is loosely based on a true story) will play in select theaters May 24 and arrives on Netflix on June 7.

Hacks Calls Out Tom Cruise’s Coconut Cake – What to Know About the Famous Dessert Cruise Gifts Every Christmas

The coveted "Tom Cruise cake" is sent to the movie star's A-list friends during the holiday season

Hacks is back and full of just as many pop culture references as before.

The first episode of the third season aired on Max on Thursday, May 2. Just like in previous seasons, the jokes were full of witty one-liners and name drops, with one scene focused entirely on Tom Cruise ’s elusive coconut cake.

In the season 3 premiere of the Emmy-winning show , Deborah Vance ( Jean Smart ) finds herself bouncing between red carpet events and photo shoots before unintentionally reuniting with Ava ( Hannah Einbinder ). Ava is her former writer who pushed Deborah to create a comedy special, but was subsequently fired in a push from Deborah to grow her own career.

Max/YouTube

The two run into each other in an awkward elevator ride. When Deborah steps off at her floor, the stiff conversation seems to end — until Ava knocks on her door.

Ava eggs Deborah on to quip about her appearance, as she had always done when the pair worked together, but stops the conversation when she spots a baked good over Deborah’s shoulder.

“Is that the Tom Cruise coconut cake?” Ava asks.

“How the hell did you know that?” Deborah replies with a furrowed brow.

“It’s a famous cake,” Ava replies matter-of-factly. “Every Christmas he sends one to his entire contact list. I’ve read about it for years. Kirsten Dunst said it was one of the best cakes she’s ever had and she was in Marie Antoinette .”

She continues on to ask her former boss about how it tastes and is shocked when she replies that she isn’t planning to try it.

“So, no one’s eating the Tom Cruise coconut cake?” Ava says, eyeing the cake in a not-so-subtle manner.

Deborah sees through her question, rolls her eyes and offers Ava a slice, which Ava eagerly accepts.

“For the record, I’m not a Tom Cruise guy and I think leading man culture is really toxic but I do want to see what this tastes like simply from an anthropological standpoint,” Ava rambles before trying the dessert.

She dives in, taking a big bite out of the huge slice she carved out for herself, immediately rolling her eyes back in disbelief. “Yup, yup,” she says, pointing emphatically at the cake.

The Hacks reference is just a sliver of the lore around the Top Gun star’s coveted cake.

Every holiday season, Cruise is known to send the $126 white chocolate coconut bundt cake made by Doan's Bakery in Woodland Hills, Calif. to his famous friends, including Tom Hanks , Jon Hamm and Rosie O'Donnell . The bundt is spread with cream cheese frosting and then covered with toasted coconut flakes. It is even available for shipping on Goldbelly for those who aren't local — or on Cruise's list.

The legend of the “Tom Cruise cake” grows every year as A-listers brag about the arrival of (or mourn no longer receiving ) the coconut treat.

New episodes of Hacks  will be available to stream on Thursdays on Max.

Nikki Glaser received a standing ovation after appearing on The Greatest Roast of All Time : Tom Brady and is now sharing more insight into her observations of the event.

While appearing on Today with Hoda and Jenna to promote her latest Netflix comedy special, Glaser was asked about Brady, who revealed he had regretted doing the roast because it affected his kids.

“I think he probably does,” Glaser said. “I feel maybe he didn’t consider the backlash from his family and how it would affect them, and I do understand that.”

“There’s roast footage out there that you can watch,” she continued. “But there’s a part of me that thinks that Tom Brady, especially given his career and how much people love him, nobody has ever said a bad thing to him in the past 30 years. So he didn’t know that anyone was capable of going there.”

Glaser said that during the roast, she “got a sense that maybe it was a little more than he had planned for,” noting that the NFL star hadn’t practiced how he was going to react.

Glaser was also surprised when Brady got off his seat to tell comedian Jeff Ross not to joke about Rober Kraft in one of the night’s viral moments.

Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck head out in LA together amid intense split rumours

Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck

Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck have been seen together for the first time in more than a month, amid intense scrutiny over their marriage.

The power couple, who tied the knot in 2002 , have been met with speculation over their romance in recent days, including claims that they are heading for a breakup.

The Love Don’t Cost A Thing singer, 54, was one of the co-chairs of the recent Met Gala but appeared at the event noticeably without Affleck, 51, raising eyebrows about their relationship status.

More recently, Affleck appeared at the Roast of Tom Brady without Lopez – with multiple reports claiming they hadn’t been pictured in the same frame in nearly 50 days.

While neither have spoken publicly about the rumours, they were finally seen together on Thursday night, spending time with their blended family.

In a picture obtained by In Touch , the Batman star could be seen behind the wheel of a car in LA, collecting his wife and her daughter, Emme.

Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck are seen leaving the Costes Hotel on July 25

Insiders also told People Magazine that they were attending an event to support their children, and both had their wedding rings firmly on.

The outlet reports that Lopez has been spending time in New York to promote her new Netflix movie, Atlas, while also working on last week’s Met Gala – as she served as co-chair.

As well as this, she was busy filming Kiss of the Spiderwoman, and preparing for her upcoming This Is Me… Now tour .

Meanwhile, Affleck kicked off filming on the Accountant 2, and also made an appearance at Tom Brady’s roast last Monday.

Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez are seen on August 02, 2002 in Los Angeles, California

The iconic couple, often referred to as Bennifer, first dated in the early 2000s, getting engaged in 2002 before calling it quits in 2004.

They sent us all into a spin when they were linked again in 2021, soon confirming the rumours that they were giving their partnership another chance after years apart.

But it seems their movie-worthy romance may finally have come to an end.

An insider told In Touch : ‘The writing is on the wall – it’s over. They’re headed for a divorce – and for once, [Ben’s] not to blame!’

Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez attend ELLE's 2023 Women in Hollywood Celebration Presented by Ralph Lauren, Harry Winston and Viarae at Nya Studios on December 05, 2023 in Los Angeles.

‘He’s focusing on his work and his kids now,’ the insider added. The source went on to say that Affleck has moved out of the couple’s shared home.

The rumour lines up with reports that Lopez was recently spotted house hunting, despite having just bought a $60.85million (£48.1m), 46,000-square foot home with Affleck a year ago.

‘They’ll never stop loving each other, but she can’t control him, and he can’t change her. There’s no way it could have lasted,’ the source said of the supposed split.

They continued: ‘They waited almost two decades to get back together, but in the end, they just couldn’t make it work. They both said they’d matured and learned from their mistakes, but some of the bigger issues that tore them apart the first time remained the same.’

In Lopez’s documentary, The Greatest Love Story Never Told , there was some indication that the constant publicity surrounding the couple had taken its toll.

Affleck said in the documentary: ‘Getting back together, I said, “Listen, one of the things I don’t want is a relationship on social media.” Then I realised it’s not a fair thing to ask.

‘It’s like, you’re going to marry a boat captain and you go, “Well, I don’t want the water.” We’re trying to learn to compromise.’
