Monsta X’s Kihyun Talks “Voyager,” Solo Debut, and Figuring Himself Out

“My favorite trip…” Kihyun looks up, reminiscing, “is a trip without plans. I love it.” He grins, diving into a longer explanation and switching from English to his native Korean. The 28-year-old singer, mainly known for his vocal mastery as part of K-pop giants Monsta X, considers himself a spontaneous person. “I love to be freely walking down the street and, whenever I see a good restaurant or a good place, just enter it,” he continues. “For instance, last time I was talking to [my Monsta X bandmate] Hyungwon, and all of a sudden we were like, ‘do you want to go to this place?’ And we just drove there, in the middle of the night.”

Even in this Zoom call, there’s a devil-may-care aura about him. He’s confident, and excited — someone who knows the rules of the game and finally feels free to break them. It helps that he’s wearing a black tee and a black leather jacket, as if he’s just one venue away from blowing minds with his solo debut, Voyager , out March 15. Since his debut with Monsta X in 2015, Kihyun has topped charts, toured the world, and thrilled the public with his soaring range and charisma, not to mention several drama OST releases and covers. (Any fans of Imagine Dragons’ “Believer” here?) But it was time to embark on a new journey: one where he could truly “show myself and my musical colors,” as he puts it.

Voyager takes us right to the core of Kihyun’s world. Its composition? Electric guitars, road trips, and chutzpah to spare. “If you want it, I can take you away,” he belts in the rock-tinged title track of the same name, knowing no one would disagree. “, (Comma),” which he co-wrote, keeps the spirits high and the windows rolled down, while “Rain,” the moody sibling of the trio, spotlights his boldness in portraying intense emotions. With only three tracks, it’s a compact display of one of K-pop’s most arresting vocalists — or, as some might joke, why the “K” in K-pop stands for Kihyun .

Ahead of the release, the singer spoke to Teen Vogue about this moment in his life, watching movies more than once, and his quest to know his true self.

Teen Vogue : Congrats on your solo debut! Can you tell us more about how you came up with the concept of Voyager ?

Kihyun: A voyager means a person who is traveling to somewhere unknown, and I wanted to [embark on] this as my first story on my own, finding my true self. I think my journey will proceed for a long time, so this is meaningful in that it’s a new start for me. It’s the first step of my travel into my own music.

TV : And why did you decide to start this solo journey now?

Kihyun: Before, there was no time to make my solo album because of my team schedules — literally, there was no time. But when I heard “Voyager,” I thought, “Oh, this song. Maybe this song.” It just came into my mind that this was the song, this was the best way to mark the start of my own story.

TV : How did the members of Monsta X support you on this new path?

Kihyun: When I was shooting the music video, every member, including Shownu, came to the set. They prepared a lot of coffee and food to feed the staff, and they sat in front of the monitor as if they were the directors, giving lots of comments and memos. Up until now they have been giving me a lot of support.

TV : What are some of the differences that you’ve experienced recording solo, as opposed to recording with Monsta X?

Kihyun: Actually, recording solo was easier. Because it’s my album, it’s my color, so it was easier. I’ve done these songs in… One hour? Yeah. And since I recorded them so fast, I was able to think a lot about the harmony and adlibs.

TV : So, why only three songs?

Kihyun: To be honest, I have a really tight schedule, so adding more than three was hard for me. I also had a lot of demos, but I thought that three was enough to reveal my colors as an artist.

TV : Do you ever feel this need to be a voyager, to escape your own routine?

Kihyun: Yeah, sometimes, whenever I want to do something, but because of my schedule I’m not able to. In those times, I try to escape by creating and involving myself in music.

TV : Do you think that your solo album worked as a way to escape from your routine into your own world then?

Kihyun: It’s true that it has become a medium for me to express the things that I really wanted, but couldn’t accomplish as a group. And also, in the music video, you can see that I’m kinda escaping this reality too.

TV : You were involved in the MV too? So, basically, in every part of this album?

Kihyun: I chose the songs, the outfits, my hair. I wrote “, (Comma).” Everything. Even the promotions. It’s very me.

TV : You mentioned “, (Comma),” so can you talk more about your experience writing it?

Kihyun: I just tried to capture my emotions as a celebrity, as a person who has to stand in front of the public. Even if people are not in the same position as me, I thought everyone who’s going through a tough time could relate to these lyrics. I tried to focus on the inner feelings and thoughts of when you always try to stay positive.

TV : Don’t you feel like staying positive all the time can be burdensome?

Kihyun: Yeah, but you know? I’m used to it, because I’ve been doing this job for eight years. When I was around 25 years old, it was really hard to always stay positive. But now I’m used to it, in front of the public.

TV : What do you do when you want to take a “comma” from this life?

Kihyun: I just… play games. And watch some movies to get inspiration.

TV : What games do you play?

Kihyun: Oh, League of Legends !

TV : Have you seen any movies that inspired you lately?

Kihyun: I really like to see movies several times. Do you know [the 2013 drama] About Time ? I watched this movie over ten times. Every time I watch it, it becomes a new movie to me. I get different messages and different inspirations.

TV : I definitely have to watch it now. You mentioned that you chose the outfits for the concept photos, and the result is stunning. The photos depict your essence so well. What did you have in mind when you chose them?

Kihyun: I wanted to portray two sides of me: one as a voyager, and one where I could show my inner self. But the outfits were very thin, and the weather was really cold!

TV : It was worth it, the photos are truly beautiful.

Kihyun: I know, I know. But it was hard.

TV : Most of the teasers feature your favorite color, blue, and there’s also a lot of water in them as well. Do you have any special connections with these elements?

Kihyun: Our photographer chose the idea of the water, and for the color blue, I discussed it with our styling team. In terms of the color itself, I think blue is a good color to represent my thoughts and feelings.

TV : If Voyager is a journey to your true self, who is Kihyun after all?

Kihyun: Oh, wow. That’s a great question. Give me a moment [ pauses to think ]. Before, I thought that the Kihyun standing in front of the public and the true Kihyun were different, but right now, I think that the Kihyun showing his musical color is the same as the Kihyun in front of everyone. To be honest, it’s hard to say who Kihyun really is, but I know that exploring my own musical world, I will be able to find out who I really am.

TV : And who do you want to be?

Kihyun: I don’t want to be anyone, just me. I believe in myself, I love myself, I don’t want to be a second [someone]. Just me.

TV : Is there anything else you want people to know about your album?

Kihyun: I just want to say that I love all these tracks, and that they’re what I always wanted to pursue. I hope that my fans will love the songs.

TV : I think they will, they’re so good.

Kihyun: Thank you. Which one is your favorite?

TV : Hmmm, I really like “Voyager,” but I also love “Rain.”

Kihyun: [Laughs.] It’s really dark, but powerful at the same time.

TV : Yes, it’s not depressing, it’s powerful. It reminds me of some Monsta X’s songs.

Kihyun: Like “Lost in the Dream”?

TV : Exactly! What else do you want people to feel when they listen to Voyager?

Kihyun: First of all, you can see the lyrics in “Voyager,” “feeling like a voyager.” I just want them to be free of themselves, traveling to somewhere they want. For “, (Comma)” and “Rain,” I tried to vividly portray the emotions [in these songs], so I hope that listeners can resonate with the lyrics. And, in “Rain,” did you hear the rap part?

TV : Yes, of course.

Kihyun: It was awkward for the first time.

Kihyun: Why? Because I’m a main vocal, not a rapper [laughs].

TV : You did it so well, though. You’re a natural.

Kihyun: I wanted to show my rap skills, too [laughs].

Kihyun reflects on finding peace in ‘Voyager’: “Right now, I’m more of a free person”

The MONSTA X member also speaks to NME about being “generous” to himself and his desire to travel without restrictions

In the run-up to the release of his debut solo single album ‘Voyager’, Yoo Ki-hyun – best known mononymously as Kihyun and as one-sixth of K-pop powerhouse MONSTA X – released a “mood sampler” video that showed him meeting another version of himself. The first Kihyun sits at a table while the other arrives with a suitcase in hand. They face off, before Kihyun hands his traveller alter-ego a glass of water after his long trip.

“So the traveller can represent the Kihyun of MONSTA X and how he achieved that pathway through past experiences,” Kihyun tells NME over a video call from Seoul. “The other Kihyun, the one who has arrived at the destination, represents a new start and the future of Kihyun as a solo artist.”

It’s a week to the release of ‘Voyager’, and Kihyun looks relaxed in a leather jacket and t-shirt. If there is any underlying trepidation about the project then he’s not showing it. When asked if he felt nervous during the process of making the record, he coolly admits: “There was not much difficulty, to be honest, I instead tried to enjoy showing my own music and my colours.” It’s a fair response, as just a few seconds into the title track, it’s clear that Kihyun, solo artist, has arrived.

Title track ‘Voyager’ is a jaunty pop-rock anthem and the vocal equivalent of a door being kicked wide open. ‘Comma’, which Kihyun contributed to lyrically, follows and is a reflective and introspective pop song. Finally, he flexes his R&B prowess on closing track Rain. “I tend to focus solely on the mood and atmosphere of the tracks”, Kihyun says about the three songs that make up the album. “Starting with ‘Voyager’, I could show the refreshing cool voice of myself, for ‘Comma’ I tried to be more sentimental and moody and for ‘Rain’ I tried to portray the raw and authentic, warming sound of my voice.”

As a member of MONSTA X, straddling genres isn’t new to Kihyun. Over the course of their seven years together, the group have amassed one of the most diverse discographies in K-pop, with Korean, Japanese and English releases shifting from everything from EDM to synth-pop to disco. Kihyun is the third member of the group to release solo music, after rappers I.M and Joohoney.

“Joohoney gave me some advice, like real musical advice, like serious lyric advice,” Kihyun says when questioned about whether any words of encouragement were received from his bandmates. “But I.M was kind of teasing me and pretending to be a senior artist who made their solo [debut] previously, and [acting like] was older than me.”

Clearly grateful for support given by his fellow bandmates, the ever-collected Kihyun admits the only time his nerves faltered in the run-up to the release of ‘Voyager’ was on the set of the single’s music video, where he was welcomed with an unexpected surprise.

“So right up until I shot a music video, I wasn’t too nervous and I really didn’t think a lot about it. But you know for the music video shooting, all of the MONSTA X members, including Shownu [who is currently fulfilling his mandatory military service ], visited the on-set scenes,” he muses fondly at the memory. “They gave me a lot of comments, feedback and they just rooted for me. That’s when I noticed that, ‘Oh, I am really going to be a solo artist and my album is gonna drop very soon.’ After that moment I started to get a little nervous.”

The nerves thankfully subsided, however, as Kihyun admits he’s not the kind of artist who gets too worked up about letting new work out into the world. It’s something, he says, that has come with age and experience: “I used to prefer being perfect. But after a certain number of years as an artist, I realised that being perfect and preferring to be a perfectionist is not always a good thing. So I tried to be more humble and generous to myself, and it has become so helpful in a lot of ways, including for musical things.”

There’s a peace that exists in letting go of harsh expectations for yourself, and that’s a theme that exists across ‘Voyager’. But it especially clear in the title track, where Kihyun sings lyrics like “Feeling like a voyager, feel so free / This relaxed feeling in my busy life” and “Come with me now / If you want, don’t hesitate / You, yes you who think too much” .

“I feel peace when I sing and the outcome is satisfying – that’s when I feel okay. That is a peaceful moment and that was the case for ‘Voyager’,” Kihyun admits in response to the overarching motif of the album. He also admits that serenity has come from not looking into the past or the future too much where possible: “I used to think that way, I used to think about reflecting on the past. But right now, I’m more of a free person. I just try my best for the day that I’m living right now.”

Trying to live for the moment is something many people can relate to, especially as we come out the other side of two completely unprecedented years that still shake everything from our daily lives to the mechanisms of the music industry. MONSTA X, too, are trying to signal a fresh start for themselves as well by embarking on a world tour in May, after literal years of delays – the latest one being just a handful of months ago .

Freedom to travel and move with ease is still, to many, an unpromised reality, but the joy of a spontaneous trip into the unknown bursts through the seams of ‘Voyager’. Kihyun admits that, if given the chance to be a voyager right now, to be the traveller alter-ego that introduced us to this new solo era, he’d go in blind.

“I’ll open up the flight app, I don’t care where it is or whatever it is, I’ll just click and get the tickets and fly over to anywhere,” he smiles through the screen. “I love a trip without a plan. The places and things and people that I meet by chance feels like destiny for me.”

MONSTA X ’s Kihyun has made his long-awaited solo debut seven years after debuting with the group!

On March 15 at 6 p.m. KST, Kihyun released his first solo single album “VOYAGER” as well as the title track of the same name. In an interview, Kihyun introduced the album, discussed the preparations for his solo debut, and more. He commented, “A solo album is something I’ve only vaguely dreamed about and it feels new that this dream has come true today.”

He continued, “It definitely feels different from when I come out as MONSTA X. Thinking about having to do everything with just my own strength makes me more nervous and I’m a bit concerned about how fans will like my personal color. I tried to capture a wide variety of points that my fans could enjoyably listen to, mixed with the music style I typically like. As I put in so much effort, I believe that they’ll probably love it.”

To describe the meaning of his title track “VOYAGER,” Kihyun explained that the word meant “traveler” and shared, “Within that big concept of a voyager, I personally become one and take on the role of leading you to my personal music world.”

Kihyun added, “Out of the infinite universes that I will unfold as ‘Voyager Kihyun,’ this first world is my personal ‘paradise’ that I’ve always dreamed of. Through this album, I want to invite fans to that paradise. So that whenever you listen to my music, you can escape your busy reality even for just a moment. I’m happy that I can show you the music that best suits me.”

Among the tracks on “VOYAGER” is “COMMA,” which is the first song Kihyun has participated in lyric-writing for. Regarding this process, Kihyun shared, “Since it was my first time writing lyrics, I thought a lot about what kind of message I wanted to convey. Ultimately, I thought the overarching frame of this album was ‘comfort.’ I wanted to express what I’ve always worried about through lyrics.”

“I tried to capture the feeling of people who live while always trying to be happy and bright as lyrics,” he continued, “and the atmosphere of ‘COMMA’ can sound a little sad, but the lyrics are quite warm. While working on this, I thought that my members, who are always working on music, are amazing. With ‘COMMA’ as my start, I do not plan on stopping attempts to consistently broaden my spectrum.”

Kihyun also touched on his members’ responses to his solo debut. He commented, “When you mention MONSTA X, you can’t take out teamwork. All my members, without anyone missing, visited my music video set. This was seriously a lot more touching than you would think.”

Kihyun elaborated, “I don’t know if it’s because it’s the first album I’m preparing alone, but I had a lot of worries. Thanks to my members who weren’t nonchalant and came running to me despite being busy, I was able to forget about all my worries in those moments. They also meticulously monitored [what I filmed] and sent me their unconditional support. Although it’s my solo album, it’s also an album that is filled with MONSTA X’s affection. I want to tell my members that I’m thankful and that I love them.”

Lastly, Kihyun left a loving message for his fans. He commented, “Yoo Kihyun’s solo album that Monbebe [MONSTA X’s fan club] have been waiting and waiting for is finally coming out. As much as you’re looking forward to it, I’m also very excited and nervous. Are you ready to come over to my personal paradise that’s been filled with ‘VOYAGER’? As these are my first promotions of 2022, I diligently prepared, so it’ll be great if you look forward to it. Let’s have a great time during these promotions too!”

Kihyun breaks down his latest step as a soloist, collaborating with his MX mates, and more about the music that’s made him with  Billboard .

1. Where are you in the world right now and can you describe the setting?

I’m deep underground in the Starship [Entertainment] practice room!

2. Both your new album and single are titled “Youth.” Can you explain the significance of this and its meaning?

“Youth” is the overall concept and message I wanted to convey in this album. Youth can be a time when people feel like they are constantly moving forward with no specific destination and no chance to look back. It can also be a period full of uncertainty. Through this album, I wanted to give comfort to people who are currently feeling this way. 

I actually asked Hyungwon for jazz songs, but he gave me rock and ballad songs instead. Unfortunately, this album doesn’t include any jazz but maybe next time. I almost didn’t include rock in this album as well, but I ended up including rock-style songs this time again.

4. Going off the album title Youth , what’s your favorite memory from your childhood?

My favorite memory from childhood is when I just sang without thinking too much. Now that I am a singer by profession and I share my story in front of many people, I have more to consider when singing. Singing is still fun now, but back when I was younger, I could just purely enjoy it without any worries.

5. What’s your favorite song from the album?

“Youth” has to be my favorite song because I think the lyrics may hold the most importance to me personally out of all of my solo songs and even Monsta X’s songs. It has a strong message that I resonate with. 

6. You wrote the lyrics for “‘Cause of You.” Tell us about this process in writing this song.

The lyrics for ‘’Cause of You’ were actually supposed to be in my solo debut album, but I ended up using them in this album instead!

7. Joohoney makes a surprise appearance at the end of “‘Cause of You”! How did that happen and why did you want to keep it as a surprise?

I was recording “Cause of You” in the studio and Joohoney came to visit because he was in the area. I asked him if he wanted to record an ad-lib for the track and he gladly accepted. I thought it would be a fun addition and thought Monbebe would really enjoy his surprise appearance.

8. What’s the first album or piece of music you bought for yourself, and what was the medium?

9. The album has really compelling artwork, including photos of you on a playground, in an apartment—is this representative of your youth?

They don’t represent my personal youth, but are a representation of the general theme of youth. The different album films and music videos show contrasting scenes about youth so I hope you’ll see the connection when watching them. 

10. How did your hometown city shape who you are?

I grew up in a city outside of Seoul. It was full of parks, trees, grass and forests, so it was an ideal place to run around and play when I was younger. I love Seoul too, but spending my youth surrounded by nature was really great. 

11. Hyungwon wrote and composed on “Bad Liar” and “Where Is This Love.” What’s the story behind this song? Did you guys collaborate directly? How did these songs end up on your album?

Hyungwon gave me “Where Is This Love” and I immediately loved the concept of the track. We didn’t make many revisions to it and kept it almost identical to the original version. “Bad Liar” is a genre I really love, but I asked Hyungwon to change the beat and some sounds here and there. We started working on it back in August and I’m so thankful that he worked hard to adjust all the parts for me.

12. What was the first concert you saw?

G-Dragon ’s solo concert! It was so shocking and fun.

13. What was the biggest lesson you learned from releasing your first solo album, Voyager , that influenced how you approached this new album?

14. “Where Is This Love” is entirely in English Can you share more of the story behind this song?

When Hyungwon first brought this song up, he explained where he got the inspiration for this song and, more specifically, about the scenes from the movie Closer. So hearing the full story before going into the recording booth greatly helped me to vividly imagine the song in my head and get in the zone. Also, I didn’t pronounce the English lyrics clearly on purpose: I wanted to give off that weak, powerless vibe through the way I sang the lyrics so I remember that I deliberately slurred my words from the very first verse.

15. Do you have a go-to karaoke song?

Actually, it’s been quite some time since I went to karaoke. Ever since I debuted and started singing as a job, I rarely go to karaoke anymore.

16. What’s at the top of your professional bucket list?

Holding a solo concert! It won’t be easy, but it’s definitely at the top of my bucket list.

17. This year marked Monsta X’s seven-year anniversary and the year you debuted as a soloist. What is something you’d like to highlight to fans that you hadn’t shown as KIHYUN until this year?

You said it well! This year marks Monsta X’s seventh anniversary while being the year of my solo debut, but I don’t think I’ve shown enough of my vocal skills so I still have lots to prove.

18. What’s one thing even Monsta X’s most devoted fans don’t know about you?

I really do want to tell you something but the thing is, Monbebe knows pretty much everything there is to know about me, so it’s hard to give an interesting answer. If I have to say, I bet they didn’t know that my gaming skills have improved a lot!

Monbebe has asked me a lot about when my second solo album is coming out or if it’s ever going to be released—and here I am back with my first mini-album EP! I hope you are enjoying it. I don’t mean to ask you to listen to it a lot, but I hope you can catch what I intended for each track in this album.

20. What else do you want to share at this time?

To Billboard readers, I am back with my second album as a solo artist. I hope my music can make you think, “Wow, KIHYUN is capable of this much as a soloist! He’s so good at this kind of music!” Please give lots of love to my mini album Youth and also Monsta X!
