World cup to 2026, ashes & kangaroo tours to return as international rugby league calendar announced.

Anyone can contribute to The Roar and have their work featured alongside some of Australia’s most prominent sports journalists.

The crown jewels of international rugby league are set to return, with The Ashes, plus Kangaroos and Kiwis tours, back on the agenda as part of the new global calendar published today, which also included the announcement that the next Rugby League World Cup will be moved back to 2026.

International Rugby League (IRL) confirmed the return of some of the most celebrated competitions in the history of the sport, with England Men and Women to tour Australia in 2025 for an Ashes tour, before New Zealand travel north in 2027 and Australia in 2028.

Additionally, a Tri or Four Nations tournament is guaranteed every year in both hemispheres featuring sides that do not tour. Alongside being pushed back to 2026, the Men’s World Cup will be reduced to ten teams but the Women’s and Wheelchair tournaments retained alongside it, before the Women’s World Cup splits into a standalone competition in 2028.

2026 will be hosted in the Southern Hemisphere, with bidding set to open to host the Women in 2028, then the Men in 2030.

With the reduction to ten teams in the Men’s tournament, a secondary tournament – known as the World Series – will come in for those that do not qualify.

All quarter-finalists from the previous tournament are confirmed for 2026, with two more to win their way through qualifying.

Crucially, that means that France, one of the game’s historic powerhouses, will have to qualify, as will the likes of Ireland, Scotland, Wales and the Cook Islands.

“It is no secret that the Achilles heel for international rugby league for far too long has been the absence of an International Calendar,” said IRL Chair Troy Grant.

“The ad hoc nature of tournaments and international matches, and the absence of any clarity for nations, players and fans to plan their seasons, is over.

The return of The Ashes is a headline move, with rugby league’s traditional contest between England and Australia having lain dormant since 2003, when Great Britain/England chose to host tournaments that also included New Zealand.

A Kangaroo Tour had been scheduled for 2020, but was cancelled due to the pandemic.

Grant assured media that the IRL had the backing of NRL clubs, who employ the bulk of the players, as well as the Rugby League Player’s Association.

Those two parties are currently locked in an industrial dispute in Australia, which had previously delayed the announcement of the international calendar.

“The International Calendar respects player workloads and importantly also reduces the impact on professional clubs,” said Grant.

“The standards have improved dramatically in recent years regarding player welfare and player workload issues, and they were key considerations in the calendar design.”

New Challenge Cup format, hopes of a Kangaroos tour and War of the Roses day – Paper Talk

Challenge Cup

A change to the current set up of the Challenge Cup seems inevitable in IMG’s new era.

In recent years, only four non-Super League clubs (five when Toulouse were in the top flight) have remained in the competition when the top flight 12 join.

That has denied lower league, and even community clubs, the chance to play against Super League sides.

It is thought that a group format involving 24 teams is being proposed for the future – with eight groups of three, guaranteeing every side two games and at least one at home, and the group winners progressing to the quarter-finals.

Question marks remain as to whether it would be purely an open draw (Wigan and Warrington in the same group anyone?) or if it would be seeded to ensure Super League clubs are kept apart.

There is a suggestion in League Express that the draw could be regionalised, to help maximise attendances.

As Martyn Sadler writes in his column: “The problem is, though, that the attendances have fallen away so badly that the Cup is no longer coming across on TV as well as we would like it to.”

Kangaroos tour

The ‘healthy prognosis’ of International Rugby League’s annual report, as described by Phil Caplan in the latest Forty-20, may be read a lot differently in light of last week’s disastrous news around the cancellation of France 2025.

Someone, somewhere has to rescue international rugby league from itself, though all may not be lost.

Following the confirmation of England’s test series against Tonga – although it won’t include any games with France – it appears there will soon be an announcement surrounding what happens in the southern hemisphere.

A Four Nations series involving Australia, New ~Zealand, Samoa and either Fiji or Papua New Guinea has been touted; though that could become two separate Tri Nations series, with the first three going up against each other, and Fiji and Papua New Guinea being joined by Cook Islands.

Caplan teases: “A first Kangaroos Tour to England and France since 2003 is also currently being discussed for 2024. If the Australians do not want to travel north a year out from another World Cup in this hemisphere, however, there is increasing interest from Samoa to follow in Tonga’s footsteps.”

The change in World Cup venue for 2025, and possibly even its delay to 2026, could increase the chances of Australia coming over.

They were due in 2020 before COVID wiped out what promised to be a momentous series.

Multi-tier War of the Roses suggestion

A War of the Roses series, that could incorporate a separate game for Championship and League 1 clubs, has been suggested by Batley chairman Kevin Nicholas.

As reported in League Express , Nicholas says at least one War of the Roses game should be played at Super League level, with a separate match involving players from the lower divisions.

He even suggests a women’s game, and also that Lancashire and Cumbria should team up to face Yorkshire, given the weight of clubs in each area.

War of the Roses often gets a mention at this time of the year as rugby league continues to search for a representative match in mid-season that will attract the crowds.

The recent mid-season international saw England thump France 64-0 in both men’s and women’s matches, in front of 8,422 at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.

Flops and laughing stocks

Toronto Wolfpack managed to get hit in the crossfire of Garry Schofield’s rant about the cancellation of the World Cup.

He rightly slammed the organisation of it all, from the failed North America bid to the latest disappointment.

And he described the Wolfpack, and Paris St Germain, as flops.

Schofield wrote in League Express : “I saw Brian Noble on the BBC bemoaning the loss of opportunity to make the France national team stronger, but that’s a million miles away.

“Other than in a few areas, there’s just no appetite for our game over there.

“Let’s not forget how Paris Saint-Germain flopped in the early days of Super League, just as Canada’s Toronto Wolfpack did more recently.

“We’re scrambling around trying to find another venue for the World Cup, and at real risk of becoming a laughing stock, if we aren’t that already.”

Confirmation Of Kangaroo Tour Dates/Venues

kangaroo tour rugby league 2023

BRADFORD'S Odsal Stadium will host this year's Origin match, whilst Wigan, Huddersfield and Hull will stage the autumn's Test Series against Australia.

The 2003 representative season begins with the Origin match between Yorkshire and Lancashire on Wednesday 2nd July at the newly refurbished Odsal Stadium in Bradford (ko 7.45pm). It will be the first time a representative game has been held at Odsal since Yorkshire played New Zealand in 1985.

The original plan of a two-match Origin series has been amended following the creation of the European Nations Cup tournament and the confirmation of further matches for the England 'A' and Wales teams in order to ease the demands on elite players.

Also as part of their preparations for the Ashes series, the Great Britain side will take on New Zealand 'A'. This match will take place at Headingley Stadium on Wednesday 29th October (ko 8.00pm).

The Australian tour begins on Tuesday 28th October when the Kangaroos take on England 'A' at Griffin Park, Brentford (ko 8.00pm).

Australia will then face Wales in a one-off Test on Sunday 2nd November (ko 2.00pm). The venue for this game will be confirmed in due course.

The following weekend, the first match in the three Test series will be staged at the JJB Stadium, Wigan on Saturday 8th November (ko 6.15pm).

The second Test will be played exactly a week later at Hull's recently opened Kingston Communications Stadium (Saturday 15th November 2003, ko 6.15pm) with Huddersfield's McAlpine Stadium staging the third and final Test on Saturday 22nd November.

Commenting on this announcement, the Rugby Football League's Executive Chairman Richard Lewis said: "The contest between the Lions and the Kangaroos is recognised throughout the sporting world as a unique and fierce rivalry.

"The Ashes series is the pinnacle of international Rugby League and generates such tremendous passion and atmosphere. The return of a tour which includes matches other than the three Tests will further enhance the experience for supporters and players alike.

"The fixture between England 'A' and the Kangaroos is an excellent opportunity for our emerging talent to test themselves against opposition of such high calibre. We are also delighted to be staging this highly prestigious international fixture at Griffin Park..The success of last season's game at the venue shows that there is a great appetite for representative Rugby League in the capital."

The newly created European Nations Cup tournament will also be played in tandem with the Kangaroo tour and full details of this exciting new competition and the remaining details of the New Zealand 'A' tour will be announced in due course.

EXCLUSIVE: This is hard for me, but Queensland players dominate my Kangaroos side, writes Paul Gallen

kangaroo tour rugby league 2023

NRL great PAUL GALLEN will appear on Nine's 100% FOOTY every Monday night of the NRL season, debating rugby league's hottest topics alongside Phil Gould and James Bracey. Tune in tonight at 9.05pm (AEST) following a bumper round 19!

If the Kangaroos were playing a World Cup at the end of this year, the team Mal Meninga would pick would look quite different to last year's world champions.

State of Origin is the toughest footy the players play, so the selectors have got to take notice of who's standing up in those games. If you handle Origin and you excel in Origin you're going to be OK to play for Australia.

If I was picking my Kangaroos team tomorrow I'd still have James Tedesco as fullback and captain. But going purely off form through the Origin series you'd have to say Reece Walsh would deserve that jersey.

kangaroo tour rugby league 2023

Come to think of it, I'd find it hard to squeeze a NSW player into the backline.

Latrell Mitchell would be one of my first picks if he had been fit and available through the Origin series but he wasn't so I can't consider him. Brian To'o would get the nod on a wing but he's preferred to play for Samoa at international level, so if he decided he didn't want to wear the green and gold, the back five on form you'd have to think would all be Queenslanders.

This is pretty hard for me to even contemplate, but if To'o wasn't available you'd probably go with Xavier Coates and Murray Taulagi on the wings and the Hammer and Valentine Holmes in the centres.

Cameron Munster is still clearly Australia's best five-eighth, so he'd be the No.6 but even though Nathan Cleary has been injured I'd have to pick him at halfback. Don't get me wrong, DCE has had a fantastic series, but Cleary's almost ready to come back from injury and for mine he's clearly the best halfback in the game.

Here's the full team I would pick if I was picking the Kangaroos side based on how this Origin series has played out:

1. Reece Walsh 2. Brian To'o* 3. Valentine Holmes 4. Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow 5. Murray Taulagi 6. Cameron Munster 7. Nathan Cleary 8. Payne Haas 9. Harry Grant 10. Jake Trbojevic 11. Liam Martin 12. Jeremiah Nanai 13. Pat Carrigan. Bench: 14. Ben Hunt 15. Tino Fa'asuamaleaui 16. Cameron Murray 17. David Fifita. 18th man: Reuben Cotter

*Xavier Coates replaces To'o if To'o is unavailable

It hurts me to put 11 Queenslanders in that 17 but if we're fairdinkum that's where things are at right now.

kangaroo tour rugby league 2023

The good news for NSW players is that can change pretty quickly. On one strong Origin performance in game three there's probably half a dozen jerseys that could change hands.

One of my selections that would probably raise a few eyebrows is Jake Trbojevic. He's obviously been missing from the first two games of the Origin series because of injury. I rate him that highly that I reckon there's a good chance the series would still be alive going into Wednesday night's game if Jake had been available.

I just think he's so reliable. You know what you're going to get from him. There's no wondering whether he'll play well or not, you know Jake Trbojevic is going to cut guys in half defensively, he'll be a solid attacker, a good ball player, he's a perfect team man, he's just going to do all the right things. There's no question mark on how he's going to go.

That's what Blues fans have got to look forward to in game three and I reckon he could be the difference in a good result for NSW in front of their home fans.

On the flipside of the Trbojevic inclusion, the Blues will have a big job to do to overcome the loss of Payne Haas, who's out with that ankle injury. Haas is an absolute machine with his workrate, he bends the line with his power game, but he also does the little things that can win you Origin games. The one percenters.

There was a moment in Origin II when Taulagi put a chip over the top and he was back there covering but unfortunately got a shocker of a bounce. The ball took a left hand turn and a Queenslander was there to get it, but just little things like that, just putting the effort in to be in the position to cover a situation like that, it's easy to underestimate how much those little things contribute to a result in Origin games.

Game three will also be another big test for the NSW captain, James Tedesco . I love what Teddy brings as a player and I reckon this is the first time I've seen him outplayed by his opposite number at Origin level. But he's a proud captain and he's still got plenty of good footy in front of him so I'm expecting a big response from Teddy on Wednesday night and with Walsh out because of suspension he could easily put in a performance that makes everyone remember why he's the Australian captain. He won't hand that position over without a fight.

We just need to see one of those trademark performances from him so that he silences some of the criticism that he's been facing this year.

Kangaroos

The Australian Rugby League Commission has today confirmed the 21-player squad to represent the Gallagher Kangaroos in the 2023 Pacific Championships.

The Kangaroos selectors have named four debutants in the squad, which will play in the tournament against Samoa and New Zealand.

The squad also includes eight players who took part in Sunday’s Grand Final.

Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow will also become the first player from the new NRL Club the Dolphins to represent Australia.

The Kangaroos will play Samoa at Queensland Country Bank Stadium, Townsville, on October 14, followed by New Zealand at AAMI Park, Melbourne on October 28.

The Commission also confirmed Sydney Roosters fullback James Tedesco as Captain.

“These players have all been exceptional this season and should be very proud to play in the green and gold colours. It’s the ultimate achievement in our game,” ARLC Chairman Mr Peter V’landys AM said.

“The Commission is excited to see further growth in the Pacific through this tournament, highlighted by the strength of the squad assembled to represent the Kangaroos.”

Kangaroos Coach Mal Meninga congratulated all of the players on their selection in the squad.

“The quality we saw in the regular season, the State of Origin series and the Finals Series means we have been able to put together an outstanding squad,” Meninga said.

“The squad has a healthy blend of representatives from last year’s World Cup, as well as others who have performed extremely well over the course of the season.”

Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks player Nicho Hynes has been added to the Gallagher Kangaroos squad following the withdrawal of Nathan Cleary due to injury.

Head Coach Mal Meninga has named two debutants for the Gallagher Kangaroos’ Pacific Championships match against New Zealand on Saturday, October 28.

Tom Flegler (Kangaroos number 850) and Nicho Hynes (851) will play their first match for the Kangaroos at Melbourne’s AAMI Park.

Their selection takes the total number of Kangaroos debutants in the Pacific Championships to six, after Dylan Edwards, Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow, Kotoni Staggs and Selwyn Cobbo represented Australia for the first time in the 38-12 win over Samoa in Townsville.

Cobbo, Liam Martin, Payne Haas and Tino Fa'asuamaleaui won’t back up in the final 17 against the Kiwis, with Meninga backing the talent and depth of the Kangaroos’ 21-man squad.

Flegler and Jake Trbojevic will start in the front row against a formidable New Zealand forward pack, while Valentine Holmes returns to the international arena on the wing.

The versatile Hynes is the new face on the interchange bench, with Reuben Cotter moving into the starting side.

Meninga said it was a great chance for the new additions to put their best foot forward in the AAMI Park clash.

“They’re all great players who deserve the opportunity to represent their country,” Meninga said.

“It’s really important that our full squad gets exposure to the intensity of international football to build confidence and match fitness for the duration of the Pacific Championships.

“Having all players take the field over the course of the first two games means we will be much better placed to handle any of the unknowns, like the possibility of injury or suspension, heading into a final.

“Right at this point though, our full focus is on this Saturday. It’s a massive game for us against an in-form New Zealand team, and I’ve got a lot of confidence in the players who are coming into the side.”

Saturday’s match will mark a special milestone for Holmes and Daly Cherry-Evans, with the Queensland pair to play their 20th matches for the Kangaroos.

The Kangaroos have been preparing in the regional New South Wales city of Albury, with more than 1500 fans attending the squad’s first field session at the Lavington Sports Ground.
