Journey 2: The Mysterious Island is a 2012 American science fantasy action-adventure film [4] directed by Brad Peyton and produced by Beau Flynn , Tripp Vinson and Charlotte Huggins. A sequel to Journey to the Center of the Earth (2008), the film is based on Jules Verne 's The Mysterious Island (1875). It stars Dwayne Johnson , Michael Caine , Josh Hutcherson , Vanessa Hudgens , Luis Guzmán , and Kristin Davis . The storyline was written by Richard Outten , Brian Gunn and Mark Gunn, and the screenplay by Brian and Mark Gunn.

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island was released in cinemas on February 10, 2012, by Warner Bros. Pictures , New Line Cinema and Walden Media to mixed reviews, [5] [6] but was a box office success with a worldwide gross of $335 million, surpassing its predecessor. [3] It was released on DVD/Blu-ray on June 5, 2012.

Four years after his adventure in the center of the earth , 17-year-old Sean Anderson is arrested by the police for breaking into a satellite control center in hopes of enhancing a coded signal that could have been sent by his long-missing grandfather, Alexander Anderson. Wanting to bond with Sean, his new stepfather Hank Parsons helps decipher the code, which leads to three books: Treasure Island , Gulliver's Travels , and Jules Verne's Mysterious Island . Using the books' individual maps, Hank uses a backlight to make them a single island, complete with the coordinates to its location. Hoping to prove to Sean that there is no mysterious island there, Hank agrees to take him to where the coordiantes point to.

In Palau, Hank reluctantly hires helicopter tourism guide Gabato and his daughter Kailani (on whom Sean develops an immediate crush) to fly to the coordinates, as they are the only ones willing to take them. The helicopter gets caught in a cyclone and they crash into the Pacific, waking up on the island.

Moving inland, they are shocked to discover miniature elephants (which belong to a prehistoric species, the Dwarf sicilian elephant) and giant butterflies. After coming across an egg clutch, Gabato accidentally wakes up a giant frilled lizard, which chases them throughout the jungle. They nearly get eaten, but are saved by Alexander. He takes them to a hut he built from the wreckage of the ship that brought him to the island. He has a working radio, but due to the positioning of the satellite, it will be two weeks before they can call out.

The next morning, Alexander leads the group to the lost city of Atlantis, which rises every 70 years and sinks again after a couple of days. Their only means of salvation seems to be the legendary Nautilus , Captain Nemo's submarine. Kailani enters Nemo's crypt and finds his journal, which shows that Nautilus is in a cave at Poseidon's Cliffs.

To go there, they mount giant bees and fly over a high ridge. When giant bee-eater birds try to devour them, Sean saves Kailani's life, but dislocates his ankle. Hank and Alexander reset Sean's ankle, then the group has a bonding moment when Hank sings his rendition of "What a Wonderful World" to ease Sean's pain.

The next morning, the water rises greatly and Hank deduces that the island will sink in a matter of hours. Gabato is missing, having gone toward the island's volcano in search of gold. While Alexander and Kailani go after him, Sean and Hank head for Poseidon's Cliffs.

To reach Nautilus ' underwater cave, Sean and Hank create makeshift oxygen tanks and dive down fifty feet, but are nearly killed by a giant electric moray eel. The 140-year-old batteries have run down, so they engineer a way to start the submarine with the eel's electricity.

Kailani and Alexander find Gabato and convince him to escape with them instead of trying for the volcano. As they near Poseidon's Cliffs, the volcano erupts. Sean and Hank arrive in Nautilus just in time to rescue the others from the water. Gabato pilots the submarine out of harm's way while Hank and Sean fire torpedoes into the path of falling debris. As they clear the dangers, Kailani kisses Sean for his bravery.

Six months later, Kailani and Gabato are well off, as he runs the most popular tourist attraction on Palau – tours aboard the Nautilus . Kailani visits Sean on his birthday. While the family celebrates, Alexander arrives with a book for Sean's birthday present – Jules Verne's From the Earth to the Moon , Alexander's suggestion for the next new adventure with the family.

After the commercial success of the first film, New Line Cinema and Walden Media purchased Richard Outten 's spec script, Mysterious Travels , in March 2009 to serve as the basis for the film. In the story, the characters embark on a journey to a mysterious uncharted island thought to have inspired the writing of three literary classics: Robert Louis Stevenson 's Treasure Island , Jonathan Swift 's Gulliver's Travels , and Jules Verne 's Mysterious Island . Brian Gunn and Mark Gunn were chosen to revise Outten's script. Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema announced that Journey 2: The Mysterious Island would be released on February 10, 2012.

Josh Hutcherson was the only actor to reprise his role. Due to scheduling issues, Brendan Fraser and Anita Briem did not return. Kristin Davis replaced Jane Wheeler as Sean's mother Liz. Dwayne Johnson played Sean's stepfather, who is forced to accompany Sean on the trip to find his missing grandfather Alexander (played by Michael Caine ) on a mythical and monstrous island. [7] Vanessa Hudgens was cast as Hutcherson's love interest, Kailani.

The theatrical release of the film was preceded by a Looney Tunes short film titled Daffy's Rhapsody , featuring Daffy Duck and Elmer Fudd in the first CG or 3-D depiction of these specific Looney Tunes characters. The short film's director, Matthew O'Callaghan, noted that " Daffy Rhapsody was originally recorded in the early 1950s as part of a kids' album". Unlike the earlier CG Looney Tunes shorts that appeared before Happy Feet Two and Yogi Bear , this short did not appear on the home video release of the film it accompanied.

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island grossed $103.9 million in North America and $231.4 million in other territories, for a worldwide total of $335.3 million, against a production budget of $79 million [8] surpassing its predecessor . [9] [10] In North America, the film earned a $6.54 million on its debut Friday, ranking fourth at the box office. [11] Over the weekend, it earned $27.3 million, coming in third place, much higher than the original's $21.0 million debut. [12] Outside North America, Journey 2 began its run three weeks before its North American release. [13] It topped the box office outside North America for two consecutive weekends [14] and three in total. [15] It surpassed the original's total outside North America. [16] Its highest-grossing region after North America was China ($58.4 million), [17] followed by Russia and the CIS ($17.6 million) and Mexico ($12.7 million). [18]

On Rotten Tomatoes the film has an approval rating of 44% based on 131 reviews with an average rating of 4.92/10. The site's critical consensus reads: "Aggressively unambitious, Journey 2 might thrill teen viewers, but most others will find it too intense for young audiences and too cartoonishly dull for adults". [5] On Metacritic, the film has a score of 41 out of 100 based on reviews from 27 critics, indicating "mixed or average reviews". [6] Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave the film an average grade of "A−" on an A+ to F scale. [19]

Lisa Schwarzbaum of Entertainment Weekly gave the film a B grade, stating that "the movie flies by pleasantly, and is then instantly forgettable. Perhaps Jules Verne can explain the science of that". [ citation needed ]

In August 2014, Carey Hayes and Chad Hayes were announced to write the script for a third film. [21] Brad Peyton and Dwayne Johnson were expected to direct and star in the sequel, respectively. [22] It was later stated that there would be two sequels. [23] By January 2018 however, Johnson stated despite the financial success of The Mysterious Island , and although a third film titled Journey from the Earth to the Moon was intended, its development had been cancelled due to a lack of immediate interest and troubles in adequately adapting the novel. [24] Despite this, reports from Hollywood production insiders arose in August 2020, stating that a sequel was once again in development. In December 2021, Hiram Garcia confirmed that Warner Bros. Pictures wants a sequel film, though Seven Bucks Productions decided to delay development in favor of pursuing other projects. [25]

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island

At one point in awful ’70s disaster movie The Swarm, reacting to the news that buzzy insects have managed to down two military helicopters, Michael Caine turns solemnly towards a co-star and utters the immortal words, “I never dreamed it would turn out to be the bees. They’ve always been our friend.” It seemed certain that this would be the weirdest bee-based scene Caine would ever have to perform. But now along comes Journey 2, boasting an aerial chase in which the knighted actor – yes – rides a giant version of his ancient foes.

Happily, unlike The Swarm, this affable adventure is in on the joke. Directed by Brad Peyton, the man behind Cats & Dogs: The Revenge Of Kitty Galore, and so clearly Hollywood’s go-to guy for very silly sequels, Journey 2 gleefully piles on the implausibilities. So we get a comedy double-act between Caine and Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson — as effectively bizarre a match-up as Arnie and DeVito — which sees them antagonistically call each other “Mary Poppins” and “Sasquatch”. A campfire sing-along recapping the movie’s plot to the tune of What A Wonderful World. And at least three moments in which Johnson reveals himself to be an expert in the exact puzzle they’re facing. Including, rather brilliantly, soil liquefaction.

It’s no-one’s definition of great cinema, but when a scene that starts with Johnson offering courting advice to his stepson degenerates into everyone bouncing berries off his chest, it’s tough not to smile. Inevitably, the on-message plot stuff is less fun. The one holdover from Journey To The Center Of The Earth — Brendan Fraser’s character barely gets a mention, but it’s implied he’s bailed on his nephew — Josh Hutcherson remains a fairly unengaging screen presence, though he’s not helped by having to constantly sulk at Johnson, one of the world’s most engaging stars. And the various character arcs (will the heroic boy and hot girl hook up? Will doofus helicopter pilot Luis Guzmán find some way to pay his daughter’s college fees?) won’t keep anyone on the edge of their seat.

So don’t expect Avatar (though there are giant lizards), rather a mild adventure that makes no sense at all but is eccentric enough to win through on charm. Not every big-budget fantasy, after all, sees the hero ball his fist and threaten to unleash the “thunder-cookie”…

After years of waiting, Disney has finally confirmed that Moana 2 is on the way, and the studio has even revealed the film's release date. Moana was a critically acclaimed adventure for Disney back in 2016, which featured voice performances from Dwayne Johnson, Auli'i Cravalho, and Jemaine Clement. The movie follows the title character, a young Polynesian girl selected by the ocean to find a demigod named Maui (Johnson) and return a mystical relic to its rightful owner.

Moana featured great characters , an emotional story, stunning animation, and catchy musical numbers, with Lin-Manuel Miranda writing some of the songs. Taika Waititi wrote an early version of the script too, though the film would change radically during development. The movie would prove to be a worldwide smash hit and earned a Best Animated Feature nomination at the 2017 Academy Awards. Given the film was instantly beloved by audiences, it felt like Moana 2 was a given, but it has taken until 2024 to be formally announced.

Voice Acting Wraps

With a November 2024 release date already in place, it can be assumed that the voice recording portion is one of the last steps taken toward completing the film.

As the long-awaited follow-up heads quickly toward its release date, the latest news confirms that voice acting has wrapped on Moana 2 . Shared in a heartfelt post on Instagram by Maui actor Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, the wrestler-turned-actor highlighted the momentous occasion with a series of BTS photos. With a November 2024 release date already in place, it can be assumed that the voice recording portion is one of the last steps taken toward completing the film.

The Sequel Sets Sail In November

While the announcement of Moana 2 wasn't that shocking, the reveal that the movie would premiere on November 27th, 2024 was quite a surprise. Disney is never shy about establishing long timelines for their movies, and the recently confirmed movies like Frozen 3 and Toy Story 5 aren't expected until 2026. Moana 2, on the other hand, is most likely nearly completed since the release date is coming so soon.

The Rock & Auli'i Cravalho Return In The Sequel

Despite being released later in 2024, nothing is confirmed about the cast of Moana 2 beyond its two returning main stars . With that said the voice cast of the sequel will be a familiar one with the confirmation that Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is back on board to play the mischievous but ultimately loveable demi-god Maui. Furthermore, Auli'i Cravalho has returned to voice the adventurous young Moana, and the sequel gives her a chance to add more nuance to the character now that she's three years older. No other cast members are known, but Disney promises new characters for the sequel .

Though the full details won't be revealed for some time, Disney did offer a few clues about the story by revealing the basic plot for the sequel. Moana 2 will see the titular hero rejoin the demi-god Maui as they sail across the ocean in search of dangerous lost waters while encountering sea monsters and lost civilizations along the way . The announcement also hinted at more characters by way of Moana's unlikely crew of sailors, but nothing else is known about them yet. It's certain Moana 2 will feature high adventure, but it is the heartfelt aspects of the first that shone the brightest.

Moana 2 is the sequel to the 2016 animated adventure film about a young woman named Moana who journeys into the sea to end her island's curse. The film will see the return of Dwayne Johnson as the eccentric and musical demigod, with Auli'i Cravalho expected to reprise her role.

'Moana 2' Gets an Epic Update From Dwayne Johnson

Disney had decided it's time to drop the sails and make for the village of Motonui and its exceptionally brilliant shores. We are returning to the Polynesian-inspired world of Moana , for a sequel which will feature Dwayne "The Rock"Johnson returning to voice the titular role as Maui, demigod of the wind and sea. In the highly anticipated sequel, Moana 2 , the super-strong god will return to help Moana ( Auli'i Cravalho ) on yet another adventure that takes her far beyond the shores of her village, to waters and adventures unknown. As we look ahead to the animated film's arrival later in the year, Johnson has offered an epic update regarding production that simply sends adrenaline flowing fast.

The sequel will see Cravalho return to reprise her role from the first film, and in a post shared on Instagram , Johnson announced that he has wrapped things up on Maui's portion of production . Johnson made the announcement alongside a series of photos that feature him recording his part as the mystical god in a sound booth. The images also feature Johnson's daughter with him. The post's caption reads: " That’s an official wrap (for now) on MAUI’s portion of our upcoming MOANA 2. As you see I had the greatest motivation to help me push thru to keep me strong ,"he wrote. Johnson then adds, "The more down this windy road of life I go, the more I realize that my greatest and most comforting inspiration and joy, is being loved by my daughters. I have a feeling this little one already knows that about her daddy. Thanks everyone for your amazing support."

The 2016 film proved to be a global sensation for Disney as it raked in nearly $700 million dollars. What followed was a plan from Disney in 2020 for a Moana television series which has, in the years that have followed, been reworked into a feature film. Now, Moana 2 is coming to theaters in November 2024, and Johnson is considerably pleased to be back in the saddle of all powerful Maui. Writing in a previous promotional post for the film , Johnson said:

"So much fun becoming MAUI again - a character that changed my life in many ways - including the character of MAUI being inspired by my late grandfather, High Chief Peter Maivia. The Polynesian cultural significance of the role and our story has touched families around the world and has easily become one of my truest honors to bring to life and share. Excited for you and your families around the world to join us on this journey."

There Is More Moana To Come

Moana 2 is set to be written and directed by David G. Derrick Jr whose credits includes titles such as Raya and the Last Dragon and Megamind . During CinemaCoN, a teaser trailer for the sequel was released featuring new music from Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear . The pair will join returning artists Opetaia Foa'i , and Mark Mancina to develop the musical score for the film. Beyond the Moana animated sequel, Disney has, in 2024, announced plans to develop a live-action remake of the original movie . The film was originally slated to theaters on June 27, 2025, but has since been delayed till July 10, 2026. The live action remake will see Johnson and Cravalho reprise their roles as Maui and Moana respectively, with Cravalho also serving as executive producer.

Surprise: There’s More-ana on the Way

If you’ve been staring at the edge of the water awaiting a Moana sequel, boy do we have news for you. Disney CEO Bob Iger shared a surprise announcement in an interview with CNBC ahead of the company’s quarterly earnings report on February 7. “ Moana remains an incredibly popular franchise, and we can’t wait to give you more of Moana and Maui when Moana 2 comes to theaters this November,” reads the press release. The new film sees Moana and the demigod Maui sail long-lost waters after receiving a sudden call from her wayfinding ancestors to once again take to the seas, per the release. A first-look video accompanied the announcement, giving us a 15-second peek at Moana on an apparently deserted island. How far will she go this time? The first trailer , confirmed voice cast , new batch of songwriters , and release date , below.

How did one find their long-lost cousins before an online database creepily compiled public records for your paid perusal? The ancestors sent a call from beyond, asking you to sail the Pacific in search of them. In the teaser trailer for Moana 2 , we see the titular character receiving a message by way of lightning bolt and mysterious drumming. “This is a call from the ancestors,” she tells the island community, “to sail to new skies and reconnect our people across the entire ocean.” Once Moana casts off for her second adventure, a hungry Maui magically appears on her vessel and considers eating her pet pig.

The original cast couldn’t stay away from the water.

On February 27, Deadline reported that Auli’i Cravalho will return to voice Moana in the sequel, Moana 2 . Shortly afterward, the actress posted an Instagram video confirming the news. “The feeling when you’re officially returning to Motunui 🥹🐚🌀,” she captioned the short clip. Now, you might recall that Cravalho previously told fans that she wasn’t planning to reprise her role, and would instead help find her successor as an executive producer. But she was actually talking about the live-action   Moana , which is a separate film. No one said she couldn’t return for the animated sequel! Just like her character , she comes back to the water no matter how hard she tries. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson will reprise his role as Maui, Disney confirmed on April 3.

Lin-Manuel Miranda, on the other hand, could stay away.

Grammy winners Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear of The Unofficial Bridgerton Musical fame replace Lin-Manuel Miranda as songwriters. While he couldn’t make it back to Oceania this round, Moana story artist David Derrick Jr. returns to direct the film along with songwriters Opetaia Foa’i and Mark Mancina.

Moana 2 sails into theaters Thanksgiving.

In the latest season of Studio Bind's hit anime Mushoku Tensei : Jobless Reincarnation , the series' protagonist, Rudeus Greyrat , forms a bond with a character initially encountered as an enemy in the first season during the aptly titled episode: "Turning Point 2". Nanahoshi , the character in question, originally crossed paths with Rudeus while accompanying Orsted the Dragon God and was present for a climactic battle in which Rudeus was almost killed by Orsted.

While these two should have constant conflict with each other, and their first reunion causes a genuine panic attack in Rudeus, their shared environment leads to a friendship, understanding, and an alliance between the two. Nanahoshi is in a similar situation to Rudeus: she too is from Earth, and was transported to the alternate world within Mushoku Tensei against her will. Through the lens of these two characters, audiences are presented with the two major styles of isekai that have achieved mainstream popularity over the years .

Finding Truth in a New World

Rudeus' journey is one of self-discovery.

One type of isekai, and the one that has gained popularity in recent years , represents wish fulfillment through a new life , in which a character wants to stay in a new world because it represents everything they were not able to achieve in their original life or world. The other shows characters who are desperately trying to get back to their own world because they’re a fish out of water in a place that is utterly alien to them, along with a life that they are seeking to return to.

While Rudeus represents the former, Nanahoshi represents the latter, and the two of them serve as reference points for each other. Their differing situations and circumstances give both characters a greater understanding of themselves, but also serve to provide a meta commentary on the genre itself.

While Rudeus' journey is one of his personal growth in a new place, Nanahoshi's journey is one of returning and reclaiming what she already had.

Much of the journey of Mushoku Tensei centers around Rudeus' growth and understanding of himself and the world around him . While he was a shut-in and the target of bullying in his former life on Earth, he's instead an incredibly powerful wizard within his new world, one who is respected and even loved by the cast of characters around him and across the world. To Rudeus, his former life represents ingrained issues to overcome , most evidently his self-hatred and anxiety. By starting his life as an infant in his new world and learning to develop his prodigious magical abilities, Rudeus can avoid the steps that his former life took that led him to a place of despair.

A Fulfilling Life Lost Through Magic

Rudeus and nanaoshi are two sides to the same isekai coin.

Though Rudeus represents what can happen when someone with an unfulfilling life gets another chance to start from the beginning, Nanahoshi's life represents the inverse: someone who had a happy, successful life and who had everything important and meaningful stripped away in a moment . While Rudeus' journey is one of his personal growth in a new place, Nanahoshi's journey is one of returning and reclaiming what she already had. Unable to use magic in her new world and unable to age, Nanahoshi is trapped in a world that is utterly alien to her , and desperately missing those who she left behind.

Through the disparate journeys and goals of Rudeus and Nanahoshi, Mushoku Tensei can comment both on the Isekai genre as a whole, and use a character-driven story in Rudeus' life to serve as a mirror to a plot or destination-driven story in Nanahoshi's life. Wish fulfillment isekai have become the dominant style within the genre in recent years and Rudeus' path represents the pinnacle of that type of story. However, some of the most renowned shows of the past decades, like Digimon Adventure or Escaflowne , follow the same structure as Nanahoshi's journey.

By intertwining the two styles with one another in one story, Mushoku Tensei is able to comment on the genre as a whole in a particularly meta and philosophical way, confirming why it is perhaps the deepest isekai story ever crafted.

Warner Bros. has released a new trailer for “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” the follow-up to the 1988 comedy-horror classic. Michael Keaton returns as the foul-mouthed, shape-shifting ghoul joined by new cast members Jenna Ortega , Willem Dafoe, Monica Bellucci and Justin Theroux. Also reprising their roles from the original film are Winona Ryder and Catherine O’Hara.

“Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” is the latest horror title to star scream queen Ortega, who has made a name for herself as a genre staple. She previously starred in the Netflix original series “Wednesday” as the titular Addams’ family member as well as Ti West’s “X” and two installments of the rebooted “Scream” franchise. However, it was recently announced that Ortega would not return for “Scream 7” due to a scheduling conflict with “Wednesday” Season 2.

Tim Burton returns to produce and direct the “Beetlejuice” sequel from a script by “Wednesday” screenwriters Alfred Gough and Miles Millar. Executive producers include Brad Pitt, David Katzenberg, Laurence Senelick, Gough, Millar, Sara Desmond, Katterli Frauenfelder and Andrew Lary. Tommy Harper, Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner serve as producers. Danny Elfman is set to compose the music for the film.

“Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” will haunt theaters starting Sept. 6. Watch the trailer below.
