Which River Cruises did Jane McDonald take?

Jane McDonald

Jane McDonald is known for her love of cruising and her enthusiasm is infectious.

“I just have a passion for cruising. I love it, absolutely love it.” Cruising with Jane McDonald Channel 5.

It took many years for Jane to discover river cruising and when she did – she loved it. She enjoys every aspect of the experience including the beautiful scenery and view from her balcony, the delicious cuisine, and the chance to explore cities, towns and villages along the way. She enjoys the company of her fellow travellers and enjoys sharing her experiences.

“It’s for people who are keen to see more of the cities: you get a lot longer in them than on an ocean cruise stopover, and of course you can get straight into the city centre. The ship is more like a floating hotel.” https://www.radiotimes.com/travel/jane-mcdonald-why-i-love-river-cruising/

Jane’s top tip:

“Comfortable shoes are the best thing I can recommend to anyone going on a river cruise. Don’t be like me and pack high heels – I had to go and buy some flats!” https://www.radiotimes.com/travel/jane-mcdonald-why-i-love-river-cruising/

Jane enjoyed several river cruises, and the details are below, making it easier to find them on Channel 5 or YouTube.

Jane’s first river cruise (Season 1, Episode 3, aired on February 24, 2017, on Channel 5) was on the Danube . She’s delighted with the luxurious Uniworld’s S.S. Maria Theresa. Jane explores the river’s charm, visiting the Széchenyi Baths in Budapest and meeting a princess in Vienna.

The adventure continues as Jane travels on the Rhône River in Season 2, Episode 3 (aired on September 15, 2017, on Channel 5). Her ship is the stunning Avalon Poetry ll. From Lyon’s celebrated food market, Marche Paul Bocuse, to a hot-air balloon ride over the beautiful French countryside, Jane’s journey is a tapestry of new experiences and breathtaking landscapes.

In Season 3, Episode 3 (aired on February 23, 2018, on Channel 5), Jane commences her Mekong River exploration in Ho Chi Minh City, delving into the vibrant sights, sounds, and cuisine of Vietnam. The voyage takes her to Cambodia, where she visits a floating market before concluding at the ancient Ankor Wat. She’s onboard the beautiful AmaWaterways AmaDara.

The Mississippi

The exploration extends to New Orleans in Season 3, Episode 4 (aired on March 2, 2018, on Channel 5), where Jane immerses herself in the city’s atmosphere before embarking on the world’s largest steamboat, the American Queen, along the Mississippi. From piano bars to former plantations, the journey unfolds with a mix of entertainment and historical insights.

Season 5 takes Jane to Portugal (Episode 2, aired on April 19, 2019, on Channel 5), where she starts her adventure in Porto and cruises down the river Douro , exploring Lamego, Vila Real, and the Spanish city of Salamanca. Her ship is the contemporary and luxurious Emerald Radiance.

Continuing the exploration in Season 5, Episode 3 (aired on April 26, 2019, on Channel 5), Jane delves into the vibrant city of Kolkata in India, experiencing traditional wrestling and sailing on the sacred Ganges onboard Ganges Voyager II. The journey unfolds with visits to historic cities and a deep immersion into local culture.

The Indian adventure concludes in Season 5, Episode 4 (aired on May 3, 2019, on Channel 5), with Jane’s cruise on the Ganges reaching its zenith at the sacred city of Mayapur. Post-cruise, she explores the ‘Pink City’ of Jaipur, Agra, and culminates her memorable journey with a visit to the iconic Taj Mahal.

The Lower Danube

Season 6, Episode 3 (aired on December 13, 2019, on Channel 5) sees Jane embarking APT’s AmaVerde on an exploration of the Balkans, starting in Budapest and navigating through post-communist cities like Bratislava and Belgrade, eventually concluding her journey at Romania’s renowned Bran Castle.

Christmas Markets

Christmas river cruise Nuremburg

The festive spirit takes centre stage in the Christmas Special (aired on December 23, 2017, on Channel 5), where Jane celebrates Christmas aboard the five-star Uniworld SS Antoinette while cruising the Rhine. The episode captures the magic of European festive markets, unique customs, and a musical performance, concluding in Switzerland.

In the 2020 Special (aired on December 18, 2020, on Channel 5), Jane revisits two festive cruises with unseen footage. American Queen Steamboat - New Orleans to Memphis cruise

We booked this cruise as part of a package (2 nights New Orleans, 7 night cruise and 2 nights in Memphis). Hotels were mediocre with poor service so I would recommend booking your own stays. Whilst I complained to AQSC about this they offered nothing in compensation other than some on-board credit should we decide to do another of their expensive cruises. The steamboat itself if a quaint and well maintained vessel. It's decor is set Having watched Jane Mcdonald on TV doing the same cruise we expected at least a welcome when we first boarded but other than a man checking ID on entry there was no one there. We found our room relatively easily and found other amenities quite easily. Our room was compact but comfortable and kept mostly clean (other than under the beds which had a thick layer of dust). The food and service at mealtimes was excellent. The boat itself is decorated in the late 18th century Antebellum style. The ladies lounge as well as the dining room were lovely and my favourite rooms. The places we visited along the Mississippi river were interesting and varied and we learnt a lot. The tours organised by ASQC were good but pricey. The ASQC have their own coaches which follow the riverboat and when it stops they can either take you to your organised tour or act like a shuttle, taking you into and from town for free. The entertainment on board is OK although more suited to the older generation of passenger which this type of cruise attracts and was mostly the same small group of performers most days of the week. I wouldn't say the caliber is Broadway as advertised but orchestral team were very good. I found this cruise very 'chillaxing'. There was always room to sit somewhere nice and it was never hurried or noisy like larger cruises. It was a great way to see the Mississippi River and places I would probably never have visited or learnt the history about. I'm not sure I'd do another similar cruise but all in all it was a memorable holiday.

I took a cruise from New Orleans over 600 miles up the Mississippi to Memphis aboard the Ameican Duchess, a padedle boat that held about 160 passengers. It made daily stops where a bus waited to whisk you to various points of historical interest. There was a sameness to the views of the river since both sides had levies and were, for the most part, tree-lined so you could not see much of the countryside. There was occasional river traffic which was mainly tug-boats pushing large barges carrying freight up and down the river.

We had a great time on the American Queen Steamboat going up the Mississippi and the week was fantastic. The positives about the American Queen Steamboat cruise were: 1) The boat is exquisitely decorated; 2) the food and the coffee were excellent at both of the restaurants including room service; 3) The entertainers and the band were wonderful and so entertaining. The shows were amazing. The entertainers were sweet and funny plus they all have great voices; 4) The beds were comfortable; 5) The bathroom is a full size bathroom and it even has a tub; 6) The rooms facing the river are roomy with comfy chairs. We didn’t even purchase the largest room either. There were two or three room sizes that were larger than ours and they cost more; and 7) they gave all of us metal water bottles that we could continually fill up at the filter stations. All of the staff from the Captain to the Engineering Department was so friendly. The attendant for our room was a real gentleman and had a great personality. He didn’t seem to mind taking care of our rooms. The servers in the dining rooms really tried to accommodate us and they were so sweet. Setting outside on the deck porch by our rooms was so relaxing and fun watching the sun go down and the moon going up. One night, we actually saw a large Harvest Moon. The excursions and the hop on/hop off tours were so informative and fun. The American Queen Steamboat had every step of the way figured out and everything ran so smoothly from getting on and exiting the boat. Just go to all the informative meetings that they have for the cruisers. There are only a few items that they should think about. First, the WiFi needs some improvement, second, the rooms have really thin walls (we could hear the other rooms televisions, when they would cough we could hear it and when they had friends in their rooms we felt like we were part of the party); third, they need to have more channels especially HGTV and the Hallmark stations. You can tell that a guy picked the channels. Fourth, there needs to be more photos of all the rooms on their website so we can decide which one fits us. Fifth, our room was three rooms away from the paddle wheel so our doors and lights rattled including the metal grate by our room rattled all night. Especially, since the boat would wind up their steam and paddle wheel and cruise fast up the river. We think the captain should go fast during the day and go slower at night so our rooms wouldn’t rattle.

I'll start by saying that the boat itself is the star of the show. It is BEAUTIFUL. They set out to create a nineteenth-century river boat on the Mississippi River and they accomplished that task. This is an authentic paddle wheeled River boat on the Mississippi River. The river is truly mighty and it is muddy. Unless you are in a port there is very little to see along the Mississippi other than muddy water, passing barges and trees. Frequent and unpredictable flooding keeps development away from the river banks. Very enjoyable sitting on the front of the boat in rocking chairs or other outdoor areas just watching the River roll by. Now, for the practical stuff. We had an inside cabin and it was tiny... the beds are less than a twin bed, there's barely enough room between the beds, storage space is very limited and for two people to try to navigate the room at one time was difficult. The food is comparable to any cruise setting, very good. The service was not quite up to par with ocean cruising and sometime it is a bit slack. The sheets kept coming off the bed during the night; just one of those little irritating things you remember and the room steward never did totally remake the bed. The beds were very comfortable though. 'Just didn't feel pampered like I do on ocean cruises. There are no private balconies. Outside cabins open up to a veranda that goes all the way around ship. Waiters do not walk around, you get your drinks yourself from the four bars. This is a small boat, only a little over four hundred people are on board. The entertainment is just okay. The best entertainment was the day we missed a port due to river traffic and the stage band cut loose with an impromptu Jazz session! Bottom line, if you would prefer rocking chairs and peace and the slow pace of life rather than casinos and fun in the sun this is your cruise.

jane mcdonald cruise mississippi

A walk along the river front on the wharf is a great thing in the evening with a cool breeze coming off the river, ships cruising up and down stream and the lights on the GNO bridge and downtown buildings. It all makes for a very pleasant experience.

We had a lovely week on the American Queen fulfilling a lifetime ambition to see the river and its adjoining towns. The positives were the atmosphere on the boat was great taking you back in time to the 19th century. The hop on hop off excursions were very enjoyable and worked well giving lots of opportunity to see new places, museums and antebellum homes that will give us memories for many years. Entertainment was all singing but of a high standard. The negatives were the noise from the diesel engines to generate power and steam, This can be overwhelming and is very obtrusive in places like the restaurant and our cabin sat above a generator and it felt like we were sleeping next to a washing machine on a constant spin cycle. If you plan to travel make absoloutely sure you get a quiet room. Our inside cabin was the smallest room we have ever slept in and there was insufficient space for a bedside table. Also the smell of popcorn in the front porch is nauseating and off putting. Food is a similar standard to an ocean cruise. The staff are generally helpful but many seem to have little training and do not compare to the professionalism of ocean cruise staff.

Cruising the Mississippi

Season 3 episode 4 of 5.

The singer delves into the American Deep South, sailing along the Mississippi. She samples the jazzy vibes of vibrant New Orleans, before being introduced to her latest floating home, the American Queen, the world's largest steamboat. The cruise tackles US history with transparency, and a visit to the Oak Alley sugar plantation fills in gaps regarding Jane's knowledge of slavery. Jane also visits Louisiana State Penitentiary, the largest maximum-security prison in the US. The journey is rounded off with a trip to Graceland, once the home of and now a shrine to Elvis

Cruising with Jane McDonald: All the destinations and cruise ships from the show

Author: Sophie Chichester

Published on: 29 June 2021

Cruising With Jane McDonald has long been a firm favourite among many Britons thanks to Jane's cheeky personality and the stunning destinations she visits.

Jane McDonald has cruised on a whole host of cruise ships to multiple destinations throughout the seven series-strong show.

From Alaska and Norway to Australia and Portugal, the singer's travels have taken her far and wide.

Cruise agent ROL Cruise offers cruises to all the same destinations onboard the very same ships Jane travelled on.

This is everything you need to know about the destinations and ships from Cruising With Jane McDonald.

Cruising with Jane McDonald Series 1

Destination: alaska.

Alaska is famed for its dramatic landscape punctuated with magnificent snow-capped mountains and towering Sitka Spruce trees. The slow-moving, winding waters of the Alaskan archipelagos guide cruise passengers between the mountains unveiling remote towns and villages along the way, not to mention awe-inspiring wildlife.

Lucky travellers might spot bears on Kodiak Island or even spot a whale diving through the waters in the south-easterly region. Grey wolves prowl the land while moose loiter by the roadside, and you'll likely hear the shrill cry of an eagle.

As for local cuisine, don't miss Alaskan salmon, halibut, reindeer dogs and 'Eskimo ice cream.'

When Jane visited Alaska she took a helicopter trip up to an ice field for a dog-sledding adventure and admired the splendour of the Margery glacier, a 21-mile stretch of ice in the Glacier Bay National Park.

Cruise ship: Nieuw Amsterdam, Holland America Line

Jane sailed on Nieuw Amsterdam to Alaska. The ship celebrates the glamour and history of New York City (paying homage to the city’s previous name).

The vessel boasts a $3million art collection featuring work by Andy Warhol, Richard Estes and Roy Lichtenstein. Expect elegant dining rooms, warm service and top-quality dining with tradition perfectly balanced with modern facilities for a pleasing and comfortable voyage.

Cruising with Jane McDonald Series 2

Destination: caribbean.

The Caribbean offers the perfect cocktail of holiday ingredients: white sand beaches lapped by turquoise waters, glorious sunshine and blue skies... not to mention actual delicious rum cocktails!

Aruba, Anguilla, St Bart’s and Turks & Caicos offer pure white sand beaches while eastern islands Dominica, Grenada, St. Vincent and St. Lucia are home to darker, volcanic sunning spots.

There's no shortage of activities to do - boating and sailing, deep-sea fishing, kayaking, surfing, windsurfing and kitesurfing are all on offer.

Foodies should tuck into pepperpot, Antigua’s national dish of meat and vegetables such as okra, spinach, eggplant, squash and potatoes or Cayman Islands Tortuga rum cake, a heavy, moist cake available in several delicious flavours.

In the show, Jane McDonald visits Cienfuegos and Santiago de Cuba as well as Montego Bay in Jamaica.

She said of Cuba: “Cuba was like being in the film La La Land. Everywhere we went people were singing and there were bands on every street corner. I was serenaded with guitars. Cubans are the happiest people I’ve ever met, and it was really enlightening to be with folk who love life. We blagged our way into a house party and it was like the set of Fame.”

Cruise ship: Celestyal Crystal, Celestyal Cruises

Celestyal Crystal is home to comfortable staterooms and suites, elegant restaurants, bars and lounges, spa and fitness rooms.

Perks include fresh towels and toiletries delivered twice a day and personal stewards on hand to deliver room service 24/7.

Cruising with Jane McDonald Series 3

Destination: rhine.

The Rhine River snakes from the Swiss Alps through central and Western Europe until it reaches the North Sea.

Cruising along the romantic river affords passengers views of beautiful castles, verdant vineyards and fairy-tale villages.

Notable stops include Amsterdam (Red Light District and tulips), Cologne (Romanesque churches and a Chocolate Museum), Koblenz (pretty squares and a Rhine castle), Rudesheim (Riesling wine and historic streets), Miltenberg (a brewery and a castle), Wurzburg (a UNESCO-protected palace and pre-war grandeur), Mannheim (an 18th-century palace and a beautiful park) and Basel (a Gothic cathedral and stunning architecture).

Cruise ship: S.S. Antoinette, Uniworld River Cruises

The “S.S.” here appropriately means “Super Ship.” The vessel features fine Brazilian marble on the walls and floors, a 19th-century Venetian glass mirror, a stylish Bar du Leopard with a full-service bar and an onboard cinema.

What's more, the two-story foyer boasts a 10-foot blue Strauss Baccarat chandelier with huge sapphires—a stunning piece that once hung in New York's famous Tavern on the Green—and a collection of original artworks is displayed throughout the ship.

Staterooms and suites on La Princesse Deck have open-air balconies that, at the touch of a button, will raise the glass to create a completely enclosed conservatory.

Cruising with Jane McDonald Series 4

Destination: south america.

Jane visited a wealth of countries in this beautiful and diverse continent in the show. She started in Chile before sailing down to Patagonia and on to the Falkland Islands in part one. In part two she went to Argentina and Uruguay.

Valparaíso, on Chile’s Pacific coast, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A riot of colour and fun, it's famous for its unique bohemian culture, brightly coloured houses and stunning seashores. Easter Island is Chile’s other hidden treasure, boasting legendary stone moai and other indigenous artefacts.

The Falkland Islands are some 4,700 square miles but with a tiny permanent population of just under 3,000 people, oh, and a great many penguins.

Meanwhile, Argentina is home to the tango, not to mention delicious food and drinks. Buenos Aires is a must-visit with its beautiful buildings and frenetic energy while Iguazu Falls sits on the border of Argentina and Brazil and is surrounded by glorious flora and fauna.

As for Uruguay, capital Montevideo has plenty to offer, including a remarkable mix of modern and colonial architecture.

Cruise line: Silver Muse, Silversea

Silver Muse offers its 596 guests the newest technology, state-of-the-art facilities, spacious outdoor areas and all-suite accommodation – not to forget exquisite dining delicacies.

The Spa by Silversea has floor-to-ceiling windows which offer sweeping views of the ocean plus nine treatment rooms, an acupuncture suite, relaxation areas, saunas, steam room and an outdoor whirlpool.

Guests can check out the Arts Café where paintings and sculptures showcase a broad range of talents while in the evening the Venetian Lounge is a must stop.

Cruising with Jane McDonald Series 5

Destination: australia.

Australia has everything to sate holidaymakers, from beautiful beaches and breathtaking wildlife to vibrant cities and lush green rainforests.

Sydney is known for its famous Sydney Opera House, iconic harbour and glorious beaches. Perth also features pristine beaches as well as a myriad of attractions including Perth Zoo.

Melbourne is Australia’s second-largest city and is considered to be the country’s cultural capital thanks to its countless art galleries, museums and live music scene. The culinary scene is also buzzing here.

Of course, heading out into nature is hugely rewarding, too. The Great Barrier Reef is the world’s most extensive ecosystem. It's home to over 1,500 species of fish, around 240 species of birds and a diverse array of crustaceans, anemones and marine worms.

Meanwhile, the Blue Mountains bristle with tall forests, sandstone cliffs, canyons and waterfalls. There are over 87 miles of walking tracks here.

Cruise line: Sun Princess, Princess Cruises

Princess Cruises exclusively featured in all three episodes of series five.

Sun Princess was built in 1995 and was one of the largest cruise ships in the world at the time. However, the ship is no longer among Princess' fleet and was sold to Peace Boat in 2020. It's now called Pacific World.

Cruising with Jane McDonald Series 6

Destination: portugal.

Portugal offers tourists cobbled streets, hilltop castles, rugged coastlines and high-reaching cliffs.

The country is very popular as a river cruising destination and in Cruising with Jane McDonald, the singer sails the Douro and ends her trip in Lisbon.

Charming Lisbon is lined with colourful buildings, cobbled streets are underfoot and an eye-catching tram serves as enchanting city transport.

Top attractions include Mosteiro dos Jeronimos, a century-old monastery; Castelo de São Jorge, from the turrets of which you can survey Lisbon; Panteao Nacional; and Praca do Comercio.

The city dates right back to 1200BC and has been home to the Neolithic Pre-Celtic tribes, the Phoenicians, Romans, and Moors.

Cruise ship: Emerald Radiance, Emerald Waterways

Emerald Radiance was custom-built for cruising Portugal's waterways. She boasts a relaxing Sun Deck, outdoor dining terrace and open-air Serenity Pool.

She's also the most intimate ship in the fleet operated by Emerald Waterways, with a capacity of 112 passengers and a crew-to-guest ratio of just 1:3.

All meals are included in the price of your trip, with complimentary wine, beer and soft drinks available during mealtimes.

Cruising with Jane McDonald Series 7

Destination: norway.

Gorgeous Norway is home to mountains, glaciers and picturesque fjords - there are more than 1,000 of them!

Sognefjord is the longest of the Norwegian fjords - it's more than 200 kilometres and measures 1,308 metres at its deepest point - while Geirangerfjord (a UNESCO world heritage site) is often said to be the most breathtaking of the fjords.

Norwegian capital, Oslo, is known for its green spaces and many museums, while Tromsø is famed as a viewing point for the northern lights. You can also go husky-sledding in the snow and admire the stunning view from Mount Storsteinen.

Jane sails from Bergen to Kirkenes in Cruising with Jane McDonald. Bergen was founded more than 900 years ago and has a rich history. Famous composer Edvard Grieg was born here.

Cruise line: MS Polarlys, Hurtigruten

MS Polarlys (which means ‘polar light’ in Norwegian) features a modern, Arctic-inspired design. It offers guests a choice of warm and cosy cabins while delicious Norwegian cuisine is served onboard.

The Explorer Lounge is one of the most popular public areas on the ships thanks to its panoramic views and comfortable 360-degree swivel chairs.

The expedition team are always on hand and regularly hold interesting lectures, presentations and activities relevant to the waters you travel.

Jane McDonald, cruise, ship, cruising, Cruising with Jane McDonald

Jane McDonald has confirmed that there will be a seventh series of her popular Channel 5 cruise programme, Cruising with Jane McDonald.

While the date of the show has not yet been announced, Channel 5 has informed us that it is likely to be in the New Year.

The proclaimed Queen of Cruise has been filming for the award-winning show all year in between touring and is reportedly due to finish the series in the next few weeks.

“We’re just filming the last bit of it. We’ve been filming it all year in between the shows,” McDonald told Cruise Critic in a recent interview . “I know it’s coming out over the winter, but I can’t really say much more.”

Cruising with Jane McDonald was first aired in 2017. The show has seen McDonald cruise across the likes of the Caribbean, Danube , Alaska , the Baltics and the Far East, exploring a host of different cruise lines and ship.

According to the Cruise Critic interview, the TV star will finish filming the seventh series on board McDonald’s favourite line, Silversea, in the Adriatic.

Next year for the first time, McDonald will be chartering her own cruise and is inviting all cruise fans to sail with her .

Taking place in September 2020, the itinerary, Sail Away with Jane McDonald, will see the star charter Royal Caribbean’s  Anthem of the Seas  on a Southampton round-trip visiting Cherbourg, Vigo and Lisbon.

Cabins are still available to book on the seven-night voyage. Along with visiting Mediterranean ports, clients can also take advantage of Anthem of the Seas ’ state-of-the-art facilities, including the Bionic Bar , where guests can order cocktails mixed by robots, and the FlowRider surf simulator.

Cruising with Jane Mcdonald on The Great Lakes with Victory Cruise Lines!

by 2020admin | Nov 27, 2019 | Cruises , Jane Mcdonald , Niagra Falls , Small Ship Cruising , The Great Lakes | 0 comments

We are excited to announce that our beautiful small ship, M/V Victory II, will feature in the new series of ‘Cruising with Jane McDonald’, with a cruise on the Great Lakes.  The hugely successful Channel 5 show will air the episode on 29th November at 9pm, the first episode in series six.

The programme features the ten-day ‘Great Lakes and French Canada’ cruise; boarding in Detroit, Michigan, USA and cruising Lake Erie and Lake Ontario before cruising up the scenic St. Lawrence River to disembark in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

Ports of call also included Cleveland, Ohio; Toronto, Ontario; historical Quebec City and Port Weller for Niagara Falls.

The visit to the Falls was an absolute highlight, with Jane taking a boat tour under the famous Horseshoe Falls, followed by a 670 metres zip wire excursion into the gorge towards the base of the Falls.

Jane McDonald cruised on the 202 passengers, elegant, ‘boutique’ small ship Victory II, one of two identical Victory Cruise Lines’ vessels, the other being the Victory I, which also cruises the Great Lakes.  A range of itineraries cover all five Great Lakes – Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie and Ontario and the Canadian Maritimes.

“It was a huge pleasure to host Jane McDonald and Channel 5’s ‘Cruising with Jane McDonald’ film crew onboard Victory Cruise Lines’ Victory II small ship last July.  Demand for US cruising, be it river, lake or ocean, is increasing from the UK and European cruise markets, especially from cruisers who have experienced European cruises and are looking for new destinations and adventures! “

Similar to the cruise featured in the programme is a 10-days ‘Great Lakes Masterpiece’ voyage Toronto / Niagara Falls to Chicago (or reverse) available for 2020 dates from £4595 pp, or a 15-day ‘Great Lakes Grand Discoveries’ Chicago to Montreal (or reverse) is available for 2020 dates from £6595 pp
