Fourth Grade Field Trip Explores Florida’s Geological Wonders

Yesterday, Beaches and St. Mark’s Campus fourth grade students embarked on an educational journey to Devil’s Millhopper State Park and Gilchrist Blue Springs State Park as part of their geology unit on “Earth’s Features.” This field trip offered a hands-on experience, allowing students to witness the geological wonders that shape the unique landscape of Florida. Specifically, they delved into the world of the Floridan Aquifer to understand its origins and significance in providing drinking water.

Devil’s Millhopper State Park provided an extraordinary opportunity for students to step back in time. This natural sinkhole, over 100 feet deep, offers a unique cross-section view of the layers of limestone rock formed by eons of geological processes. At Gilchrist Blue Springs State Park, students were greeted by crystal-clear springs from the Floridan Aquifer.

Equipped with cameras and notepads, students documented their experiences at the parks. This media will be utilized in creating a Public Service Video to promote the conservation of these parks and the aquifer. Students will also construct working models of sinkholes, springs, and wells.

“These hands-on projects enable students to solidify the knowledge gained from the field trip,” said Shannon Johnson, Beaches Campus Science Instructor.

Laura Fackler, St. Mark’s Campus Science Instructor, added, “ Our students loved this field trip, and had many favorite parts. Almost everyone talked about getting their feet wet in the springs, and most said going into the springs and the sinkhole were highlights. They enjoyed making paper when we were at the sinkhole and making new friends. One student said simply, ‘Best field trip ever!’”

Jags coach Doug Pederson calls news of lawsuit against Brandon McManus, team 'disappointing'

jacksonville florida field trips

JACKSONVILLE — Jacksonville Jaguars coach Doug Pederson said there was little he could comment on about the lawsuit filed against former kicker Brandon McManus and the team by two women alleging sexual misconduct on a team flight to London last year, but termed the news "obviously disappointing."

"Other than that, honestly, being a legal matter at this time ... can't really comment until information is gathered," he said Tuesday before the Jaguars' OTA practice at the Miller Electric Center.

What are the allegations against Brandon McManus?

The suit accuses McManus of sexual assault by rubbing against the women during the Jaguars' flight to London for the first of the team's two overseas contests in 2023, before the Oct. 1 game against the Atlanta Falcons. It also states that McManus attempted to distribute $100 bills to flight attendants to drink and dance during the flight and accuses the Jaguars of negligence.

The lawsuit, which lists the women only as Jane Doe I and Jane Doe II, was filed Friday. Both were reportedly working as flight attendants on the Jaguars' flight.

McManus' attorney issued a statement to ESPN.com, which first broke the news, that called the allegations, "absolutely fictitious and demonstrably false."

Brett R. Gallaway said in the statement that the suit was filed "as part of a campaign to defame and disparage a talented and well-respected NFL player. We intend to aggressively defend Brandon's rights and integrity and clear his name by showing what these claims truly are — an extortion attempt."

Attorney decries 'arrogance, ignorance'

The attorney for the women, Tony Buzbee, released a statement on Instagram in which he said attempts were made to "resolve the matter without the need for litigation."

Buzbee filed 25 lawsuits for women who accused Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson of sexual misconduct.

"Our efforts at resolution were met with arrogance, ignorance and stupidity," Buzbee said in the post. "Strikingly similar to how Deshaun Watson's team [the Houston Texans] responded when we tried to resolve those cases pre-filing. The allegations in this lawsuit are very serious. We made sure to fully vet them and speak to witnesses before even taking the cases."

The Jaguars' statement defended the organization from accusations in the suit of the team "failing to supervise McManus and failing to create a safe environment for staff serving the team."

"We're aware of the complaint, and we acknowledge the significance of the claims," the team's statement said. "As we continue to look into the matter, it bears emphasizing that we insist on an organization built by people who represent our community and game with the highest character and class."

Pederson said team flights are 'business trips'

Pederson said the lawsuit's characterization that the team flight "quickly turned into a party" is not the norm for how the team conducts itself on flights.

"A typical flight is not that way ... It's a business trip," he said. "That's how we approach it from an organization standpoint and from a league standpoint. When I read that ... that part was disappointing."

When Pederson was asked about the seating on the flight and whether coaches were in a position to be aware of any issues such as described in the suit, he declined further comment.

"I'm not going to get into a ton of those questions right now, until we get more information," he said.

Brandon McManus was not signed for performance, contract reasons

The team did not re-sign McManus after a season in which he missed five of his last seven field-goal attempts. He missed a 48-yard attempt with 5:25 left in the game against Cincinnati on a Monday night game that the Jags eventually lost in overtime, the first of five of six losses to end the season. It cost the Jaguars (8-3 entering the team) the chance to move to the No. 1 seed in the AFC at the time.

McManus played nine years with Denver and earned a reputation for making long-distance kicks and kickoffs. He made 30 of 37 field-goal attempts and all 35 of his conversions for the Jaguars and his kickoffs resulted in touchbacks 75 percent of the time.

Pederson said the team was unaware of the allegations at the time they decided not to resign him.

"A couple reasons ... one, performance," Pederson said. "Obviously in this business, whether it's a coach or a player, it's performance-driven, right? Then you start talking about contracts. If we have an opportunity to draft somebody, you know, looking forward, then we take advantage of that."

Jaguars have hopes for drafted kicker Cam Little

The Jaguars drafted Arkansas kicker Cam Little in the sixth round and brought back Riley Patterson, who made 30 of 35 field-goal attempts in 2022 for the Jaguars, including the game-winning kick in the playoffs on the final play against the Los Angeles Chargers.

McManus has since been signed by the Washington Commanders, who also issued a statement.

" ... We were made aware of the civil lawsuit filed on May 24 against Brandon McManus," the Commanders statement said. "We take allegations of this nature very seriously and are looking into the matter. We have been in communication with the League Office and Brandon’s representation and will reserve further comment at this time."

PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers' Week 10 opponents are making a change to their roster following accusations against one of their former players. The Washington Commanders announced they have released kicker Brandon McManus following a lawsuit where two women have accused him of sexual assault.

Two flight attendants have filed a lawsuit against McManus and the Jacksonville Jaguars, alleging that the assaults took place during the team's trip to London last season. McManus was signed by the Commanders this spring and has now been released.

McManus's attorney released a statement following his release, thanking the Washington orginization while also claiming his innocence from the accusations.

Florida softball vs Oklahoma State final score: Keagan Rothrock brilliant in Gators' WCWS win

jacksonville florida field trips

Keagan Rothrock made her first start in the Women's College World Series on Thursday for the Florida softball team.

Based off her performance, she looked like nothing less than a seasoned veteran as she vexed Oklahoma State batters all evening from Devon Park in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Rothrock pitched seven scoreless innings, allowing only two hits and striking out three in a 1-0 victory for the No. 4 seed Gators.

As brilliant as she was, she faced a worthy foe in Cowgirls starting pitcher Lexi Kilfoyl, who likewise was brilliant for No. 5 OSU. She pitched six innings, striking out five while allowing just two hits and one earned run.

MORE: Watch the 2024 Women's College World Series live with Fubo (free trial)

That one run was all the Gators needed, and it came at a time when Florida bats themselves were fairly frigid. Heading into the bottom of the fifth, Kilfoyl was pitching a shutout and a no-hitter — until a ninth-pitch, full-count solo home run by Katie Kistler over the right field wall finally put Florida on the board.

Earlier that inning, center fielder Kendra Falby made a tremendous defensive play to keep Oklahoma State off the board, stealing what looked like could have been a massive hit for the Cowgirls from OSU's Lexi McDonald. Instead of letting the ball drop, Falby made the leaping grab at the warning track to keep the Florida shutout intact.

With that, check out all the score updates and highlights from the Gators' WCWS winner vs. OSU:

Florida softball vs Oklahoma State score

Florida softball vs oklahoma state updates, highlights.

All times Eastern.

Final: Florida 1, Oklahoma State 0

Top of the seventh inning: florida 1, oklahoma state 0.

11:46 p.m.: Wark pops up to Wallace, and that's it! Florida is 1-0 in Oklahoma City with a 1-0 win over Oklahoma State. The Gators will advance to take on No. 1 overall seed Texas in the winner's bracket game on Saturday.

11:44 p.m.: Timm flies one up to center field, where Falby waits for it. OSU is down to its last out.

11:42 p.m.: Davis hits a spinner past Rothrock, but Williams is there to field it for the ground-out

11:40 p.m.: Davis, Timm and Wark are up in the lineup for Oklahoma State in the 5-6-7 slot. They need a run to tie it.

Bottom of the sixth inning: Florida 1, Oklahoma State 0

11:38 p.m.: Oh, wow. Wang sees Wallace stealing and flips it to Edwards at third base. She's caught stealing for just the third time all season.

11:37 p.m.: There's ball four to Erickson. Avery Goelz is in to pinch hit for the Gators and quickly goes up 2-0 in the count.

11:35 p.m.: Wallace steals second to get in scoring position with two outs! Erickson is back up and has a chance to set the Florida record for most RBIs in a season here. ...

11:33 p.m.: Wallace hits the ball well, but straight to Edwards at third base. She flips it to second to get Otis out but the Cowgirls can't turn the double play at first.

11:31 p.m.: Otis manages to drop a floater between three Oklahoma State defenders in the left-center field for just the Gators' second hit of the day.

11:31 p.m.: Anyway, back to the defensive effort: Falby grounds out to Bloodworth for out No. 1.

11:30 p.m.: With Florida back up to bat, here's a closer look at arguably the lone offensive highlight of the game thus far:

Top of the sixth inning: Florida 1, Oklahoma State 0

11:27 p.m.: Godwin chops one up to Wallace for the ground-out. Florida's three outs away from winning its WCWS opener.

11:26 p.m.: There's an Oklahoma State hit, its first since the second inning. Wang gets a grounder by Kowalewski for a single. Taylor Anderson is in to pinch run.

11:25 p.m.: Next up, Edwards flies out to left field.

11:24 p.m.: Brown chases down a Poullard fly ball into foul territory for out No. 1.

Bottom of the fifth inning: Florida 1, Oklahoma State 0

11:19 p.m.: Kilfoyl gets Williams to strike out swinging, but the damage is done with Kistler's monster solo homer to start the inning.

11:17 p.m.: Brown bounces one up to Bloodworth for the ground-out and out No. 2.

11:14 p.m.: Kowalewski gets under one of Kilfoyl's pitches and sends it to right-center field, but Macy Graf makes a running snag at the warning track to keep the Gators 1 for 2 in the inning.

11:11 p.m.: Finally, Florida's on the board! Kistler destroys the shutout and the no-hitter with one swing that sends Kilfoyl's pitch sailing over the right field wall. That's her fifth home run of the season.

Top of the fifth inning: Florida 0, Oklahoma State 0

11:05 p.m.: Rothrock gets Bloodworth looking. Another 1-2-3 inning.

11:03 p.m.: McDonald with a huge hit that looks like it could challenge for a home run, but Falby makes a leaping grab near the warning track to take the hit away. Tremendous defensive play.

11:01 p.m.: Wark grounds out to Williams at second base.

Bottom of the fourth inning: Florida 0, Oklahoma State 0

10:57 p.m.: Nothing comes of the inning. Walsh is up to bat and is ruled to have swung on strike three by the home plate umpire. Florida strands two runners and we're taking the pitchers' duel to the fifth.

10:55 p.m.: Erickson reaches on an error by Edwards to put two Florida runners on. One well-timed rip could give the Gators the advantage here.

10:53 p.m.: The Cowgirls convene in the circle to make sure they're all on the same page.

10:52 p.m.: Kilfoyl walks Wallace to put a runner on — the best base-stealer in the SEC this season. Up next in the lineup: Erickson, whose 80 RBIs this year are tied for the most in Florida program history.

10:51 p.m.: Otis put everything into that swing, but Kilfoyl's 73 mph eludes her best attempt. Two outs, nobody on for the Gators.

10:48 p.m.: Falby grounds out to Davis for the first out.

10:47 p.m.: Incredible stat from the ESPN2 telecast: Kilfloyl has 10 scoreless innings pitched vs. Florida. The closest pitcher to her vs. the Gators pitched 2 2/3 scoreless innings.

Top of the fourth inning: Florida 0, Oklahoma State 0

10:44 p.m.: Would you believe it's another pop out, this one from Timm? Wallace brings it in for the third easy out. To the bottom of the fourth we go.

10:43 p.m.: Another pop-up, this one from Davis, straight back to Rothrock.

10:42 p.m.: Godwin pops up to Wallace on the first pitch in top of the fourth.

10:39 p.m.: Kilfoyl has allowed no hits through three innings; Rothrock has allowed one. Pitchers' duel is well underway in OKC.

Bottom of the third inning: Florida 0, Oklahoma State 0

10:38 p.m.: Williams pops up to Bloodworth for out No. 3 — 1-2-3 for batters 7-8-9.

10:36 p.m.: Another K for Kilfoyl as Brown strikes out swinging.

10:34 p.m.: Kowalewski grounds out to Edwards for out No. 1.

10:33 p.m.: Kowalewski, Brown and Williams bring up the rear for Florida's third trip to the plate.

Top of the third inning: Florida 0, Oklahoma State 0

10:30 p.m.: Edwards grounds out to Ariel Kowalewski, then Wang flys out to Ava Brown for the 1-2-3 inning. Moving right along.

10:29 p.m.: Poullard with a nice rip into right field, but Kistler is well-positioned for the out.

10:27 p.m.: OSU's back at the top of batting order with Poullard, Edwards and Wang.

Bottom of the second inning: Florida 0, Oklahoma State 0

10:24 p.m.: Kistler hits one right back to Kilfoyl, who turns a 1-6-3 double play to end the inning.

10:23 p.m.: Walsh reaches on a fielder's choice as she slaps one to Bloodworth who forces Erickson out at second.

10:22 p.m.: Erickson takes the walk, and Florida has a runner on.

10:19 p.m.: Florida's batting 4-5-6 in the lineup with Jocelyn Erickson, Reagan Walsh and Katie Kistler, respectively.

Top of the second inning: Florida 0, Oklahoma State 0

10:16 p.m.: Megan Bloodworth strikes out swinging for K No. 3 by Rothrock.

10:14 p.m.: Lexi McDonald gets one by Rothrock into center field for the first hit of the day.

10:12 p.m.: OSU's Micaela Wark strikes out swinging for out No. 2 of the inning.

10:11 p.m.: Claire Timm flys out to Otis in left field for the first out.

Bottom of the first inning: Florida 0, Oklahoma State 0

10:07 p.m.: There's a 1-2-3 inning for Kilfoyl and the Cowgirls as Wallace slaps one to Edwards at third base for the easy throw-out at first.

10:05: Korbe Otis is up next, and grounds out to Kilfoyl for out No. 2.

10:04 p.m.: Kilfoyl with her first K of the day, getting Kendra Falby to strike out swinging.

Top of the first inning: Florida 0, Oklahoma State 0

10 p.m. Rothrock gets out of a jam after Rosie Davis pops one out to Wallace for the third and final out. Florida bats up next.

9:59 p.m.: Rothrock walks her second batter of the inning in Karli Godwin to put runners on first and second.

9:57 p.m.: Caroline Wang floats one up to Mia Williams at second for out No. 2.

9:55 p.m.: Tallen Edwards walks with a 4-1 count from Rothrock.

9:54 p.m.: Jilyen Poullard grounds out to second, and we're well and truly underway.

9:53 p.m.: Keagan Rothrock gets the start in the circle and starts with two straight strikes.

9:25 p.m.: First pitch is scheduled for 9:52 p.m.:

Miles Russell, 15-year-old phenom, announced as part of 2024 Rocket Mortgage Classic field

jacksonville florida field trips

Somebody else will have to drive him to the golf course, but Miles Russell, the 15-year-old who took the Korn Ferry Tour by storm earlier this fall when he became the youngest player to finish top 20 in a PGA Tour sanctioned event , will make his PGA Tour debut in Detroit this summer.

Russell, a Jacksonville Beach, Florida, native, will get a sponsor exemption for the event and become the youngest golfer to play in the 2024 Rocket Mortgage Classic, the tournament announced on social media as the event's media days kicked off at Detroit Golf Club on Monday morning.

More: Ranking Michigan's top 20 public golf courses for 2024

Russell's father is scheduled to drive his son in the courtesy car to the club during the tournament, Rocket Mortgage Classic director Jason Langwell said.

But Russell will be doing the driving on the course, which is not the only strength of his game, as evidenced by his performance at the LECOM Suncoast Classic in April, which included a 5-under 66 on Sunday as he carded seven birdies in a 10-hole stretch to finish at 14-under for the tournament.

It's only part of the reason the  American Junior Golf Association ranks Russell as the No. 1 rated boys high school golf prospect in the nation.

"This is a place that we think of future stars starting here," Langwell said. "We certainly put Miles in that category. He's going to be one of the youngest players ever to make his PGA Tour debut, high school freshman."

Russell wasn't the only one of the names added to the field Monday morning. A handful of top 50 players in the world and notable names such as Chris Kirk, Min Woo Lee, Francesco Molinari, Nicolai Højgaard, Webb Simpson and Nick Dunlap were all announced as part of the field.

More: What makes the perfect golf trip? Book early, keep the peace and follow these tips.

Kirk, the world No. 28, won the Sentry back in January for his sixth victory on Tour, and returns to the field after a solid performance in 2023 when he shot all four rounds in the 60s.

Lee, the world No. 35, has four international wins and four top 10 finishes on Tour.

Højgaard, the World No. 40 who made his Ryder Cup debut for team Europe last year, finished T-21 in the 2023 Rocket.

Molinari, the 2018 British Open winner, will make his debut in Detroit while fellow major winner, Webb Simpson, who took home the 2012 U.S. Open, returns to the field with seven PGA Tour wins to his record and Nick Dunlap, a 20-year old who became the first amateur to win on Tour in more than three decades in January.

The tournament will be highlighted by defending champion Rickie Fowler , as well as other PGA Tour winners like Will Zalatoris and Tom Kim, when the sixth annual running of the event takes place from June 27-30.

"It was more of a relief for me,” Fowler said via zoom Monday morning, of his win last year. “To have my daughter there, I hadn’t won since she’d been born … but just excited to be coming back. Haven’t played particularly great since last year in Detroit and I’m excited to get things back going.

"Ready to defend."

Tennessee leads NCAA baseball tournament field. Analyzing the College World Series bracket, schedule

jacksonville florida field trips

Selection day has arrived in college baseball, the official start of the quest for the sport’s ultimate destination, the College World Series in Omaha.

First, however, the 64-team field must navigate the regionals, with the winners at the 16 four-team double-elimination sites advancing to the best-of-three superregional round a week later.

In addition to the seed order at all 16 sites, the NCAA committee also unveiled the top eight overall seeds in the field. That group will be guaranteed to be playing in friendly environs should they advance, but it doesn’t guarantee a trip to Omaha. Who are the top teams in the NCAA baseball tournament?

Defending champ LSU will be a long shot at best this time, needing a late push just to make the field. But the SEC is well represented at the top of the bracket as the likes of Tennessee, Texas A&M, Kentucky and Arkansas have all hovered at or near the top of the polls for much of the season. The conference also broke a record with 11 teams selected and five of the eight national seeds. ACC top finisher North Carolina and league rivals Clemson and Florida State could also make some noise, as could Oregon State and Oklahoma. The best hope among non-power conference representatives looks to be East Carolina or UC Irvine, but the Sun Belt Conference could also offer a candidate or two.

Who are the top players?

There might not be a Paul Skenes in this year’s field, but there’s certainly no lack of arm talent. Wake Forest’s Chase Burns finished the regular season with 169 strikeouts. Arkansas’s Hagen Smith wasn’t far behind with 150 while allowing just over four hits per nine innings. Duke’s Beilenson and ECU’s Trey Yesavage also sport top-five ERAs. Top sluggers in the tournament include Georgia’s Charlie Condon, the Texas A&M duo of Jace Laviolette and Braden Montgomery, Tennessee’s Christian Moore and Oregon State’s Travis Bazzana. Florida getting a nod while on the bubble means two-way star Jac Caglione will continue his career in the tournament.

Who are the top 16 seeds?

  • Tennessee (50-11)
  • Kentucky (40-14)
  • Texas A&M (44-13)
  • North Carolina (42-13)
  • Arkansas (43-14)
  • Clemson (41-14)
  • Georgia (39-15)
  • Florida State (42-15)
  • Oklahoma (37-19)
  • North Carolina State (33-20)
  • Oklahoma State (40-17)
  • Virginia (41-15)
  • Arizona (36-21)
  • UC Santa Barbara (42-12)
  • Oregon State (42-14)
  • East Carolina (43-15)

Women’s College World Series field set: Who are the 8 teams alive for national title?

Oklahoma second baseman Tiare Jennings (23) slides home to score a run in the third inning of a softball game between the Oklahoma Sooners (OU) and the Florida State Seminoles in Game 2 of the Norman Super Regional in the NCAA Tournament at Love's Field, Friday, May 24, 2024. Oklahoma won 4-2 to advance to the Women's College World Series.

The Women’s College World Series field is set with softball’s final eight teams heading to Oklahoma City, Okla., to continue the chase for a national title.

The field is led by defending champion Oklahoma. The No. 2 Sooners will be joined by No. 1 Texas, No. 4 Florida, No. 5 Oklahoma State, No. 6 UCLA, No. 8 Stanford, No. 10 Duke and No. 14 Alabama. Oklahoma has won the past three championships and five of the past seven.

The WCWS opens play on Thursday: UCLA versus Alabama (Noon); Oklahoma versus Duke (2:30 p.m.); Texas versus Stanford (7 p.m.); Florida versus Oklahoma State (9:30 p.m.). ESPN will broadcast the first two games, and ESPN2 will broadcast the final two.

How did the teams get here?

Texas: The Longhorns pulled out Game 3 of their Super Regional series against rival Texas A&M on Sunday and did most of their work in that series late in games, scoring 16 of their 20 runs in the sixth inning or later. The teams combined for a Super Regional record of 39 runs.

Oklahoma: The Sooners’ dynasty continues as they punched their ticket to Oklahoma City with a 2-0 series win over No. 15 Florida State. This year marks Oklahoma’s 12th WCWS appearance since 2010.

Florida: It was a record-setting day in Gainesville, Fla., where Gators sophomore catcher Jocelyn Erickson tied the Florida single-season RBI record with a sacrifice fly to right field for a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Florida never looked back and won Game 3 at home over Baylor for its 12th WCWS appearance.

Oklahoma State: The Cowgirls advanced in dominant fashion over Arizona — sweeping the series by a combined score of 18-4. Oklahoma City is just an hour away from Stillwater, which is always a welcomed home-field advantage.

UCLA: The Bruins avenged a disappointing 2023 finish (a home loss in the opening round) to advance to their eighth WCWS in the past 10 seasons. The Bruins routed No. 11 Georgia by a combined 14-1 margin.

Stanford: The Cardinal outlasted No. 9 LSU with back-to-back shutouts after losing the opening game. They scored seven runs in the fifth inning of Game 3 to pull away for an 8-0 win.

Duke: The Blue Devils went on the road to upset No. 7 Missouri and advance to the WCWS for the first time in program history. Duke won the decisive game 4-3 on Sunday in nine innings. Duke lost to Oklahoma 3-0 to open the season.

Alabama: The Crimson Tide took the most unlikely path to the WCWS by upsetting No. 3 Tennessee. That series featured the longest game in Super Regional history on Saturday (14 innings), and Alabama followed that up with a 4-1 win on Sunday with four first-inning runs.

ATLANTA (AP) — Hilbert Margol says he didn’t look on himself as a hero when his U.S. Army artillery unit fought its way across Europe during World War II. But he will be feted in France as one of 60 American veterans of that conflict traveling to Normandy to mark the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings .

“I know my brother and I never looked at it as we were any kind of heroes, nothing like that,” Margol said recently of himself and his twin brother Howard, who served with him. “It was just our time. That we were asked to serve. And we did.”

The 100-year-old Margol, who lives in suburban Atlanta, is among the dwindling band of veterans of the conflict leaving Atlanta on Sunday on a chartered flight for Deauville, Normandy. The veterans will take part in parades, school visits and ceremonies — including the official June 6 commemoration of the landings by soldiers from across the United States, Britain, Canada and other Allied nations on five beaches.

Margol didn’t land at D-Day, but the Jacksonville, Florida, native was among those who liberated the Dachau Concentration Camp on April 29, 1945.

The trip also includes high school and college students selected to escort the veterans and learn about their experiences. Charter flights also took veterans from Atlanta to France in 2022 and 2023.

On Sunday, the group of 60 veterans, donning customized jackets commemorating the anniversary, arrived at the Atlanta airport to the clapping and cheering from the flight crew and the Dutchtown High School marching band from Hampton, Georgia. The veterans were then guided through the airport to their terminal in a parade headed by the marching band.

World War II veteran Jake Larson , a 101-year-old American best known on social media under the name “Papa Jake,” said he joined the national guard when he was 15 for the money and landed on Omaha Beach on D-Day. Reflecting back on the three years he was in Europe, Larson said he is “no hero.”

AP correspondent Karen Chammas reports on D-Day observances, on the 80th anniversary of the allied assault, in France.

“I’m just a survivor, but I’m here to honor those people who gave their life so I can be here,” Larson said Sunday before the flight.

He also had a message to world leaders: "“Make peace not war.”

Andy Negra of Helen, Georgia came ashore with the 6th Armored Division at Utah Beach on July 18, 1944, about six weeks after D-Day. It is his second trip back to France after also taking part in last year’s flight.

“Well to me, we fought for freedom, and we fought for peace, and we fought for a good life,” Negra, a native of Avella, Pennsylvania, said in a recent interview.

The trip is being organized by Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines, the Best Defense Foundation and the North American branch of French tire maker Michelin.

“It is our privilege to celebrate and honor these heroes by flying them directly to Normandy and recognizing their incredible sacrifices and contributions to the world,” Delta CEO Ed Bastian said in a statement.
