Jacana Safari Lodge

Set around a mysterious crater lake inside Queen Elizabeth National Park in western Uganda, Jacana Safari Lodge is a moody mid-range property, with guest accommodation in 10 chalets and providing access to a good range of safari areas. No minimum age (15 for chimp tracking).

Jacana Safari Lodge, Location

Jacana Safari Lodge is located in the Queen Elizabeth National Park area.

Jacana Safari Lodge is located in the Queen Elizabeth National Park area of western Uganda.

Queen Elizabeth National Park

Queen Elizabeth National Park is the most accessible and productive savanna wildlife reserve in western Uganda.

At almost 2000 square kilometres this represents a really substantial tract of diverse scenery.

The park lies across the floor of the Great Rift Valley, between Lake George in the northeast to Lake Edward in the southwest. The two lakes are connected by the Kazinga Channel, after which the reserve was originally named.

The reserve contains a range of different scenery and ecosystems, being dominated by open savanna, but with substantial tracts of forests and woodlands.

Queen Elizabeth National Park is home to an impressive 95 mammal species, including African buffaloes, Ugandan kobs, hippopotamuses, Nile crocodiles, African elephants, leopards, lions and chimpanzees.

The park also hosts over 600 bird species, which is the highest of any reserve in Africa and is a testament to the diverse range of habitats to be found in this remarkable area. Highlights include martial eagles, African fish eagles, shoebill storks, papyrus gonoleks, lesser flamingoes, greater flamingoes, white-tailed larks and Verraux’s eagle owls.

Set around a mysterious crater lake inside Queen Elizabeth National Park in western Uganda, Jacana Safari Lodge is a moody mid-range property, with guest accommodation in 10 chalets and providing access to a good range of safari areas.

Getting there

The property is usually accessed by private guided overland safari, usually arriving from the gorilla areas of Bwindi Forest (5 hours) and departing north to chimpanzee areas of Kibale Forest (3 hours).

We usually include all the connecting transport for your trip unless  you specifically ask us not to.

Jacana Safari Lodge, Lodge

The lodge is centred on a simple main building, leading out to a swimming pool area.

Jacana Safari Lodge, Lodge Image 1

Guest accommodation is in ten tin-roofed Chalets.

Jacana Safari Lodge, Chalet Image 1

Activities include forest and birding walks and kayaking at the lodge, plus vehicle safari in the reserve, motorboat safari along the Kazinga Channel and chimpanzee tracking in the Kyambura Gorge.

Jacana Safari Lodge provides access to a good range of activities ...

Chimpanzee tracking in Kyambura Gorge

Kyambura Gorge is located in the northeast sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park. As well as being a pleasant location for a hike, the verdant vegetation within this narrow defile is host to a population of semi-habituated chimpanzees.

On arrival at the trailhead you will meet up with other guests joining the trek and have a briefing from the walking guide.

Initially the guide leads the group down to the base of the gorge, where he will attempt to pick up tracks. From here the group follows various paths, crosses streams and scrambles through the bush in search of the chimpanzees.

The chances of a decent encounter is pretty high, in excess of 60%, but not quite as reliable as at Kibale Forest.

Even if chimps are not encountered, the gorge makes for a scenic and interesting hike, there is a host of other mammals in the area, occasionally even elephants are encountered, as well as a great variety of bird and plant life.

On a trek in 2018 we saw a group of five chimps, including a big male and a tiny baby. We also saw colobus monkeys, red tailed monkeys, heard hippos and saw lots of signs of elephants. Another group of guests also saw a leopard on way out.

The walk itself should be considered medium to tough and can in parts become a slippery scramble. Proper hiking boots are recommended.

As always with walking safari, listening to and obeying absolutely the directions given by your guide is essential and even then one should be aware that there are relatively rare but significant risks involved.

The treks are operated by the parks authority, so you may have to join with other guests, although the group size is restricted to around 8 to 10 people in total.

The treks usually start at either 08.00hrs or 14.00hrs and last between 2 and 3 hours.

An additional Chimp Permit need to be purchased, on top of the regular park fees for Queen Elizabeth National Park.

Pre-booking is strongly recommended.

Chimpanzee tracking is also available at Kalinzu, a smaller forest reserve which lies around 15km from Kyambura Gorge Lodge and where there is a troop of about 40 habituated chimpanzees.

Motorboat safari

A safari by motorboat along the Kazinga Channel is considered to be one of the highlights of QENP. This 40km channel flows between Lake George and Lake Edward, right through the heart of the main wildlife viewing area of the park.

The boat trip starts on the Mweya Peninsula to the northwest and proceeds first east along the north bank and then returns west along the south bank to the starting point.

Wildlife viewing often includes hippos and crocodiles in the water itself, buffaloes lazing by the shore, whilst elephants and a range of lesser mammals often come down to drink. You may even see lions or leopards. Birdlife can also be very good. The trip usually also passes by small fishing villages, which lend some additional local colour.

Boat safaris usually start at 1100, 1400 or 1600hrs and last for around 2 hours. The boats that we usually use for this are private, as opposed to those operated by the National Parks Authority and have carrying capacities of between 8 and 12 guests, depending on which boat is used on the day.

The guide price is USD 145 per person and pre-booking strongly recommended.

Kayak safari

Some modest kayaking is possible on the lake by the lodge.

Jacana Safari Lodge, Motorboat Safari

A major highlight is motorboat safari along the Kazinga Channel inside the national park.

Jacana Safari Lodge, Chimp Tracking

Another rare treat is chimp treeking in the atmospheric Kyambura Gorge.

Jacana Safari Lodge, Vehicle Safari

It is also possible to do vehicle safari in the Ishasha Sector when travelling between here and Bwindi Forest.

Jacana Safari Lodge, Seasonality

The best conditions are generally May-Sep, although there are good reasons to visit during other months.

Jacana Safari Lodge, Downsides

The main potential downsides are the degradation of the park by human settlement, the dated lodge, high exposure to insects, weaker wildlife viewing, no off-road driving and adverse weather conditions especially during Mar-Apr and Oct-Nov.

Wildlife Viewing & Activities

Whimsical black-and-white colobus monkeys play in the trees around the lodge, and baboons are never far away. But multitudes of animals await on daily wildlife drives, forest walks and boat cruises on the Kazinga Channel, which boasts the greatest density of hippos in Africa, not to mention plentiful crocodile, elephants and water birds. Queen Elizabeth Park is renowned for its variety of big game and plains willdlife such as buffalo, warthog, leopard and lion. Antelope abound, too, including Ugandan kob, defassa, waterbuck and bushbuck. This park is also fantastic for birding and butterfly viewing. Hardy adventurers can make the 10-mile trek into Kyambura Gorge to see chimpanzees and red-tailed monkeys. You can also explore the crater lake of Nyamusingire, where Jacana Lodge is located, by kayak-- the lodge has four available for guests’ use. Or just relax and enjoy the view from the Captain’s Table, a floating pontoon available for sightseeing cruises, sundowners or dining out on the lake.

Queen Elizabeth National Park has a variety of habitats within the park, and the below chart helps to illustrate major wildlife sightings often experienced. Chimpanzee can be tracked in Kyambura Gorge, although most travelers prefer to view chimpanzee in Kibale Forest National Park. Other typical sightings may include the rare shoebill stork and a number of other mammals, birds and reptiles. Exact sightings will depend on seasonality and wildlife movements.

Photo: Conservation

Conservation

The owner of Jacana Lodge is a Ugandan safari lodge operator that is a strong supporter of using tourism projects, such as this one, toward the eradication of poverty and the conservation of Uganda’s pristine environments for generations to come. With many years’ experience in the design, construction and management of ecotourism lodges, the company has carved a respectable and recognized name in the tourism sector while providing its clientele with superior lodge accommodations and services. The architecture of these ecotourism facilities throughout Uganda reflects a style that complements their natural environments. The unified and extensive use of natural materials (wood, stone, rope, etc.) combines to create low-impact buildings and accommodation units. Each project allows guests to visit the areas most in need of protection and preservation, thereby influencing the local economies towards tourism rather than poaching or other resource uses at odds with long-term sustainability of habitats and species.
