Admitted students will visit campus Friday

By Anne Krapfl March 28, 2024

The admissions team, undergraduate colleges and student service units are hosting their third spring Admitted Student Day on Friday, March 29 (9 a.m.-4:30 p.m.) for more than 2,000 visitors. The group features students who have been offered admission to Iowa State, some of whom have accepted their offer. Many of them are visiting campus with family members for the first time -- or again -- to decide if Iowa State will be their school.

"A majority of our students will be first-time visitors, which makes help with navigation and wayfinding so impactful," said Brylee Groskreutz, campus visits coordinator in the office of admissions. "We also have many students who are using this experience as a follow-up visit to help make their college decision.

"We want to thank our entire campus community in advance for keeping an eye out for campus visitors Friday and going above and beyond to welcome them to campus."

How successful has West Virginia football been with official visits?

The West Virginia Mountaineers have had success when getting players on campus.

For as long as I can remember, one of the staples of recruiting at West Virginia has always been if you get them to campus you have a chance. But does the data back that up? How has the West Virginia Mountaineers football program done when it comes to success with official visits during the course of the Neal Brown era?

In the 2021 class all of those opportunities were shelved due to the safety concerns caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. But with things back to normal, we examine how the Mountaineers have done with getting players on campus.

What has been the success rate of players that West Virginia head coach Neal Brown and staff have had on campus for official visits during his brief tenure?

Brown took over mid-way through the 2019 class, so those numbers will be skewed both in the aspect of time to recruit players as well as the number of those they were pursuing. With the largest bulk of the class already in place, which Brown had to re-host and secure without losing any they did host an additional eight players on official visits down that stretch run.

Of those eight, West Virginia was able to sign safety Tae Mayo, defensive lineman Jordan Jefferson, safety Rashean Lynn, offensive lineman John Hughes and safety Noah Guzman. However, wide receiver Darren Wilson (Iowa State), offensive lineman Willie Tyler (Texas) and offensive lineman Darnell Wright (Tennessee) all choose to sign elsewhere.

If you consider the 14 players that were already committed to the program the Mountaineers were able to get back in the fold with an additional visit due to the coaching change with Dana Holgorsen heading to Houston and the program signed a total of 19 of the 22 they had on campus.

But for the sake of this we will only count those new players, so the Mountaineers signed five of the eight.

The class of 2020 was a more accurate depiction of what a typical official visit schedule could look like as the Mountaineers hosted 33 total players for official visits. That included the first sampling of early official visits as the coaches hosted 13 players in the summer over a two-day period from June 14-16.

During that early window, the Mountaineers eventually signed six of those players including defensive end Akheem Mesidor. However, seven elected to go elsewhere with defensive end Quentin Williams (Miami), cornerback Tarheeb Still (Maryland), linebacker Tirek Austin-Cave (Miami), wide receiver Bryce Gowdy (Georgia Tech), defensive end Aaron Lewis (Michigan), wide receiver Kris Draine (Missouri) and offensive lineman Samuel Rengert (Iowa State).

Now, those visits are conducted earlier and there is more risk attached but even hitting on half, especially with you consider Lewis initially committed to West Virginia before flipping later, is a good turnout at the early stages of the process.

Of the 20 other prospects that West Virginia hosted for official visits over the rest of the process, the Mountaineers landed a total of 14 of those. The only exceptions were defensive end Simeon Barrow (Michigan State), defensive end Wesley Bailey (Rutgers), cornerback Lakevias Daniel (Mississippi), defensive end Yaya Diaby (Louisville), defensive end Justin Jackson (Colorado), and safety Charles Bell (Marshall). And out of that list, some of those decisions were ultimately made by West Virginia.

During the 2021 class, there were no official visits permitted, but the Mountaineers did continue to show their success when they were able to get players on campus. Out of the 16 commitments, a total of 12 of them visited for some type of junior day or activity during their recruitment.

In the 2022 class, the numbers again were impressive with the Mountaineers hosting 46 prospects visiting with a total of 21 of those committing to the program.

And in 2023, West Virginia has hosted 36 players and 19 of those committed. The 2024 group hosted 46 official visitors and has landed 22 of them.

While the 2025 class is incomplete, the Mountaineers have hosted 41 official visitors and landed a total of 20 of those with more decisions on deck.

Overall, the data shows that only 84 of the 183 non-transfer players that have taken official visits to West Virginia since Brown has been atop the program have elected to go elsewhere not including the current year.

That’s hitting on 54-percent of the players that the program has hosted, and that total doesn’t even include the ones that West Virginia elected to pass on for whatever reason that was ultimately their decision and not the players.

Getting players to campus has certainly been a weapon for the coaches and the data backs it up.

Iowa State basketball's 2024-25 Big 12 Conference opponents announced

iowa state campus visit schedule

The 2024-25 schedule for Iowa State men's basketball is now a bit more clear.

The Big 12 announced the schedule matrix with home and away opponents for the upcoming season on Thursday. Each team will play five opponents twice, home and away, and the remaining Big 12 opponents once during the season.

Iowa State will play Arizona, UCF, Colorado, Kansas and Kansas State twice, once at home and once on the road. The Cyclones will host Baylor, BYU, Cincinnati, TCU and Utah. The team will hit the road to take on Arizona State, Houston, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech and West Virginia.

Opponents were picked on a combination of geography, historic results and a poll of the coaches to best balance the schedule for travel and competitiveness. The complete league schedule, with dates and times, will be released later.

Iowa State has tough matchups against high-caliber programs this season, having to face new Big 12 member Arizona and perennial powerhouse Kansas twice.

Iowa State's road-only matchups will require some hefty traveling, with their shortest trip of the five being over 500 miles away in Stillwater, Oklahoma to face Oklahoma State. Houston, who the Cyclones will only see on the road, will be a tough test for Iowa State.

These games are in addition to what should be a tough non-conference schedule. The Cyclones have set games with rival Iowa and Shaka Smart's Marquette, both of which are at home. Iowa State is also scheduled to play in the Maui Invitational the week of Thanksgiving, where they could face the powers of Michigan State, North Carolina, UConn and other top schools.

Iowa State will open its season on Nov. 4 against Mississippi Valley State on Nov. 4.

Scott Starzyk Considering Options After Iowa Visit

  • Iowa Hawkeyes

It's been a fruitful spring for Scott Starzyk. The Texas high school specialist reported recent scholarship offers from Texas A&M, Mississippi State, Syracuse and Oklahoma heading into this past weekend's Iowa official visit.

The Hawkeyes added to his options. They offered during his time in town.

"Iowa was a great experience, and I’m looking to make a final decision by early August," Starzyk told HN.

Oklahoma, Alabama, Ole Miss, Syracuse, Ohio State, Memphis and Texas are among the other schools that have played host to him for campus visits. Army, Navy, Memphis and others offered scholarships.

The Hawkeyes return two-year starting kicker Drew Stevens, who will be a junior this season. They added North Carolina's Tripp Woody at the position in the '24 class. Those two guys walked on at Iowa.

Stevens would be a senior when Starzyk arrives at Iowa. Woody could have four years of eligibility remaining if he red shirts in '23.

"I feel as it’s one of the better situations in the country right now for a kicker to enter," Starzyk said.

He was hosted by Stevens during his official visit.

"He was great. He showed me around downtown and really helped me to enjoy Iowa City," Starzyk said.

Kohl's Kicking ranks Starzyk as the No. 1 kicker nationally in '25. The Woodlands High senior is the No. 5 punter in the cycle.

Iowa's special teams have performed well in recent years under the coordination of LeVar Woods. Starzyk learned how the Hawkeyes operate.

"I liked how coach Woods laid out the in-season schedule and how he manages the guys' reps," Starzyk said.

Lsu reportedly picking up steam for pair of blue-chip defensive lineman committing next week, share this article.

LSU is off to a strong start in the 2025 recruiting cycle, but it’s looking to add to its defensive line haul. After next week, it could be a lot happier with that group.

Two players the Tigers are in the mix for are set to make their decisions: four-star defensive lineman Zion Williams and four-star EDGE Damien Shanklin . Williams, who comes from Lufkin, Texas, commits on Thursday, while Shanklin, an Indianapolis prospect, commits the following day after originally planning to commit in late August.

LSU has recently found itself trending for both. It picked up two crystal ball projections for Williams, the No. 284 player in the cycle, in the last week. Shanklin, who On3 ranks inside the top 100, also holds a crystal ball prediction for the Tigers.

On3’s recruiting prediction machine also gives LSU a sizable lead for both.

The Tigers had both on campus for official visits in the last month, and it seems defensive line coach Bo Davis used that time with the prospects productively.
