Speaking during a visit to Jembrana Regency in Bali on Thursday, 29 December 2022,  Indonesian Minister of Tourism and the Creative Economy,  Sandia Salahuddin Uno, urged West Bali to strengthen its readiness for the onslaught of tourists that will result in the opening of a toll road connecting Denpasar and Gilimanuk. The Minister said future developments will help achieve a more equitable distribution of tourism across all Bali areas that are now overly focused on the south and east of Bali.

The Minister underlined how the new toll road scheduled for completion in 2025 would impact Bali’s development. Adding: “We need to get ready because Jembrana will be along the toll road connecting Denpasar and Gilimanuk. We must prepare a tourism ecosystem as many things will soon be relocating to West Bali.”

Commenting separately and quoted by  Beritabali.com,  Minister Sandiaga reminded his listeners that Bali remains foremost in the world’s mind as a tourism destination. He urged that Bali’s sustaining popularity be used to the optimum. Adding: “This is the basis of our continuing optimism; the tourism ecosystem and creative economy must be prepared, starting now. This is our homework so that tourism recovery takes place more equitably, emphasizing quality and sustainability.”

Tourism Targets for 2023

Minister Sandiaga said that the target for domestic and international tourists in 2023 is projected to double the current performance. For international tourists in 2023, Indonesia aims to welcome 7.4 million visitors, while domestic travelers are expected to hit between 1.2 and 1.4 billion movements.

Sandiaga said: “All tourism and the creative economy operators must address these (targets). Don’t let us get left behind! We must prepare to create new business opportunities that create the widest employment opportunities.”

Indonesia Tourism Minister confident of attracting 10 million foreign tourists in 2023

Sandiaga Salahuddin Uno, Indonesia’s Minister of Tourism and Creative Industries, expressed confidence that Indonesia would welcome 10 million foreign tourists in 2023, exceeding the target of 8.5 million.

“We, at the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy, provide performance guidance to tourism and creative economy players. It (the target) has been revised twice, and now, the newest figure is 8.5 million,” Uno noted at the 2023 Indonesia Retail Summit (IRS) event inJakarta on Tuesday.

In order to do this, the minister urged retail business owners to get ready to offer services and goods to tourists.Uno anticipates that tourists will shop at Indonesia’s contemporary stores.

The minister claims that the retail industry, which is aiming for 1.2 to 1.4 billion trips in 2023, contributes significantly to domestic tourist travel.

He urged retailers to increase promotion for this reason, among other things, by leveraging social media. He pointed out that events and promotions run by stores have a significant impact on people’s movements. In this way, household spending, the main driver of economic growth, might be further increased.

“We recorded that there are three thousand events this year that could generate up to US$12 billion in terms of economic support,” he stated.

On that occasion, the minister drew attention to the problem of Jakarta’s poor air quality, which jeopardizes Indonesia’s potential for retail tourism. In actuality, Jakarta is the second entrance point for foreign tourists after Bali.

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to lessening Jakarta’s air pollution. The action will be taken to reduce the dangers to the economy, the number of tourists that visit, and their health.

“That is why for the short term, we will carry out weather modification. We will also fundamentally change our lifestyle, from previously all using fossil fuel cars, we direct (people) to electric fuel (vehicles),” he remarked.

Wonderful Indonesia Earned Lonely Planet's Best in Travel Destinations for 2023 Award

JAKARTA November 17, 2022 - Another good news for the world of Indonesian tourism. Lonely Planet, a global tourism media providing trusted information for travelers across the globe, awarded the archipelago with the prestigious Lonely Planet's Best in Travel Destinations for 2023. Indonesia's Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy, Sandiaga Salahuddin Uno, received the award directly from Lonely Planet's Managing Director of Destinations, Jim Brody at the World Tourism Market in London, which took place from November 7 to 9, 2022.

Raja Ampat, West Papua, representing Indonesia, was selected as one of six destinations around the world, recommended for a must-visit location in 2023. Categorized as “Unwind Destination,” Raja Ampat was considered suitable for relaxing, escaping from busy life, unwinding, and as a gateway to seeking serenity and peace. The other five destinations that received awards in the same category were Halkidiki in Greece, Jamaica, Dominica, Malta, and Jordan.

The Lonely Planet, in its official statement, regarded Raja Ampat as an alternative destination to other Indonesian islands, which are famous for their coral reefs, incredible diving spots, and beautiful beaches.

"This award brings hope to the rising quality and world-class Indonesian tourism destinations, as well as proving that the global trend of tourism in the future has changed from the old 3S; standing for Sand, Sun, and Sea, into the new 3S; namely Spirituality, Serenity, and Sustainability. Raja Ampat is an example of a destination that fulfilled the new 3S,” uttered Sandiaga.

The Minister also informed about Raja Ampat’s excellent tourism village. “For further information, Arborek; a tourism village that has been developed successfully in this region, is a pilot project for a tourism village that has managed to become a quality and sustainable destination," he noted.

Moreover, Indonesia’s Tourism and Creative Economy Deputy for Marketing, Ni Made Ayu Marthini, added, "Raja Ampat was chosen because the coral reefs and diving spots of this region are globally unmatched, its less-crowded atmosphere can become an alternative to Indonesia's new island for foreign tourists.”

She then expressed her aspiration for Indonesia’s tourism. “We hope this award will help increase international awareness towards Raja Ampat and Indonesia, as well as encourage all Indonesian tourism actors to improve the management of the new 3S destinations even more actively," declared the deputy.

This award given by Lonely Planet became another addition to the collection of awards that Wonderful Indonesia has received throughout 2022. Moments ago, Bali was ranked first in the "10 Happiest Holiday Destinations in the World" issued by Club Med, a Travel and Tourism Operator based in France.

TheIndonesia.id - Indonesia expects to receive at least 7.4 million international arrivals to produce a $ 6 billion exchange following the spike in foreign tourists last year.

After lifting the Covid-19 restrictions, the tourism industry is set to run at full pace to earn more international visits in 2023.

Last year, between January and October, the country earned $4.26 billion from international tourism, so much higher than the previous year when the country only earned merely $500 million.

"The Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy has doubled the target [of foreign arrivals] to 7.4 million for this year," said The Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy, Sandiaga Uno in a seminar in Jakarta on January 18th, 2023.

Indonesia was targeting 3.6 million international arrivals last year, and as of November 2022, the country has received 4.6 million visits.

Sandiaga said that the country still has much work to do in order to boost the number of International tourists. Besides, around 45 million population in the country depend on the tourism industry to make living.

Tourism Industry of Indonesia; Strong Rebound Seen in 2023, But Still Not Back to Normal

In Indonesian media it was reported that Sandiaga Uno, who is Indonesian Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy, stated that the country managed to collect a total of USD $10.46 billion in foreign exchange earnings from the tourism industry during the first three quarters of 2023.

These earnings were brought into the country by the 8.51 million foreign visitor arrivals that were recorded in the same period. So, it means that – on average – one foreign visitor arrival delivers approximately USD $1,230 in earnings for Indonesia. These lucrative earnings, indeed, explain why the government of Indonesia (or any other country) wants to welcome as many foreign tourists as possible. It generates revenue (including tax revenue), trade, business, employment, and investment.

As is widely known, the COVID-19 crisis (when governments of various countries imposed far-reaching social and business restrictions, including even a temporary ban on incoming/outgoing travel, in an attempt to curb the spread of the COVID-19 virus) did enormous damage to the tourism industry, globally.

First, in Q2-2020 and Q3-2020, it became nearly impossible to opt for international travel as many borders were temporarily closed. Then, in 2021 and 2022, it became required to have received COVID-19 vaccines (and boosters) to travel by airplane (implying a significant part of the global population, perhaps up to 30 percent, could not travel by air as most of them wanted some clearer data regarding the efficacy and safety of these vaccines). Lastly, throughout the COVID-19 crisis, there was a lot of unfounded fearmongering going on in media, which made many people too afraid to travel, particularly to a country like Indonesia where the healthcare system does not have the greatest reputation. Furthermore, in 2021 and 2022 the price of jet fuel became very expensive, causing airlines to raise prices of tickets and thereby making it harder for people to afford an airline ticket, particularly to a destination far away.

So, how did this affect Indonesia? Well, from a total of 16.11 million foreign visitor arrivals in 2019, which was before the start of the COVID-19 crisis (although there already was a decline in Chinese tourists visible in December 2019 because COVID-19 started spreading in China in late-2019), the number of foreign tourist arrivals into Indonesia plummeted to 4.05 million in 2020, and hit rock bottom in 2021 with only 1.56 million foreign visitor arrivals. One can imagine how tough this must have been for all those micro, small and medium sized enterprises that rely on tourism. It is estimated that 23 million Indonesians are dependent on work related to tourism.

indonesia tourism slogan 2023

Table 1 shows that the start of recovery began in 2022, and continued into 2023. In fact, the recovery goes much faster than Indonesia’s Tourism and Creative Economy Ministry expected. At the start of 2023 this ministry had its target for full-year 2023 foreign tourist arrivals at 7.4 million. However, this target was already achieved by July-August 2023.

Indonesia Tourism 2023: Top Travel Trends and Destinations

indonesia tourism slogan 2023

Indonesia, the Emerald Archipelago, is a country of astounding beauty and rich cultural diversity. With its breathtaking landscapes, pristine beaches, and vibrant traditions, Indonesia has always been a top destination for travelers worldwide. In 2023, the archipelago promises even more exciting experiences and destinations for those seeking adventure, relaxation, and cultural enrichment. In this comprehensive guide, we'll explore the top travel trends and destinations in Indonesia for the year 2023.

Sustainable Tourism

Sustainable tourism is a growing trend in Indonesia, with travelers becoming increasingly aware of their environmental footprint. Many destinations are now emphasizing eco-friendly practices, such as responsible wildlife encounters, eco-tours, and eco-lodges. Places like Bali, Sumatra, and Raja Ampat are leading the way in sustainable tourism initiatives, making them ideal choices for eco-conscious travelers.

Remote and Untouched Islands

As travelers seek more exclusive and remote experiences, Indonesia's lesser-known islands are gaining popularity. Islands like Sumba, Belitung, and the Togian Islands offer pristine beaches, untouched nature, and a chance to escape the crowds. These hidden gems provide a unique opportunity to connect with nature and experience the local culture authentically.

Cultural Immersion

Indonesia's rich cultural heritage is a significant draw for tourists. In 2023, cultural immersion experiences are on the rise, including traditional village stays, cultural festivals, and hands-on workshops. Destinations like Yogyakarta, Ubud, and Toraja are perfect for travelers seeking an authentic cultural experience.

Adventure Tourism

For adrenaline junkies, Indonesia offers a plethora of adventure activities. From surfing in Bali to hiking volcanoes in Java, there's something for everyone. Explore the underwater wonders of Komodo National Park while diving, or go white-water rafting in the challenging rivers of Kalimantan. Adventure tourism is booming in Indonesia, making it an ideal destination for thrill-seekers.

Wellness and Spa Retreats

Indonesia has long been known for its wellness and spa offerings, and in 2023, this trend continues to grow. Bali, in particular, is a hub for wellness retreats, yoga centers, and luxurious spa resorts. Travelers looking to rejuvenate and find inner peace can indulge in holistic therapies and yoga practices set against stunning natural backdrops.

Culinary Tourism

Indonesian cuisine is a delightful blend of flavors and spices. Culinary tourism is on the rise, with travelers eager to explore the diverse culinary traditions across the archipelago. Savor traditional dishes like rendang, nasi goreng, and satay at local street stalls or indulge in gourmet dining experiences in Jakarta or Seminyak.

Island Hopping

With over 17,000 islands, Indonesia is a paradise for island-hopping enthusiasts. Explore the diverse landscapes and cultures by hopping from one island to another. Popular routes include Bali to Lombok, Java to Bali, and Raja Ampat to Sorong. Each island offers a unique charm and adventure waiting to be discovered.

Historical Sites

Indonesia is steeped in history, with ancient temples, palaces, and colonial-era buildings dotting the landscape. Yogyakarta's Borobudur and Prambanan temples, Jakarta's Kota Tua, and the royal palaces in Solo and Surakarta are just a few of the historical sites worth exploring. Immerse yourself in Indonesia's past and witness its rich cultural heritage.

Wildlife Encounters

Indonesia is a biodiversity hotspot, home to unique and endangered species. Ecotourism and wildlife encounters are increasingly popular, with travelers seeking to spot orangutans in Sumatra, Komodo dragons in Komodo Island, and diverse marine life in Raja Ampat. Responsible wildlife tours promote conservation efforts and educate visitors about the importance of preserving these precious ecosystems.

Digital Nomad Retreats

In response to the rise of remote work and digital nomadism, several Indonesian destinations are catering to this trend. Bali, in particular, has become a hotspot for digital nomads, offering co-working spaces, reliable internet connectivity, and a vibrant expat community. Remote workers can enjoy the perfect balance of work and leisure against the backdrop of Bali's natural beauty.

In conclusion, Indonesia's tourism landscape for 2023 is filled with exciting opportunities for travelers of all interests. Whether you're seeking eco-friendly adventures, cultural enrichment, adrenaline-pumping activities, or simply a relaxing escape, Indonesia has it all. Embrace the travel trends of the year, and embark on a journey to discover the beauty and diversity of the Emerald Archipelago.

Indonesia tourism slogan marred by mistakes

Indonesia's latest campaign to lure tourists got off to a rocky start after embarrassed officials acknowledged that a key slogan was ungrammatical and ordered it corrected.

"Visit Indonesia 2008. Celebrating 100 Years of Nation's Awakening" has been printed on billboards, government Web sites and emblazoned on the sides of aircraft belonging to the national carrier, Garuda.

To be grammatical, the phrase "Nation's Awakening" should be made specific, for example by preceding it with the definite article 'the' or the possessive pronoun 'our.' Another option would be to replace "nation" with the adjective "national."

"Our colleagues tried their best not to be reckless in creating the slogan, I'm sure," said Thamrin Bachri, director general for marketing at the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. "But we have been advised by several people to change the slogan."

The 1908 event referred to in the campaign is the founding of Indonesia's first nationalist group, a development hailed here as a key step in the country's eventual independence from Dutch rule in 1945.

Many people have questioned the wisdom of referring to the anniversary at all, given that few people outside the country have ever heard of it and would unlikely be interested in attending events to mark it.

"Just delete the subtitle, tourists won't understand it anyway. Even Indonesians don't understand it," said a comment posted on one unofficial local tourism Web site.

Bachri said the phrase would be changed to "celebrating 100 years of national awakening."

The ministry has spent around $96,000 for the campaign, he said, adding, however, that the consulting firm handling the case had agreed to correct the slogan without additional charge.

Indonesia drew about 5 million tourists last year, most to its resort island of Bali.

Neighboring Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia each attract many more, thanks in part to slick advertising campaigns as well as better tourist infrastructure.

Antara News are reporting that Indonesia’s Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy has released the  ‘2023–2024 Tourism and Creative Economy Outlook,’ which contains comprehensive information on the latest developments in the tourism and creative economy sector. Sandiaga Uno, Indonesia’s Tourism and Creative Economy Minister said the newly launched outlook could be used as a guide by tourism and creative economy players in formulating strategic plans for 2023–2024. “I invite everyone to read the newly issued outlook. For tourism players, please ensure to see it point by point because it contains important information, including regarding Indonesia’s creative economy,” he added. Uno also sought a more comprehensive review of the outlook’s content through a focus group discussion (FGD). This could result in a number of recommendations regarding strategies or programs for developing the tourism and creative sector, say Antara News . The ministry’s deputy for strategic policies, Dessy Ruhati, explained that this year, her side is focusing on the spirit of innovation and collaboration. The guideline contains an expert survey that documents views from several leaders and experts from the tourism and the creative economy sector. In addition, the outlook also outlines the achievements of the tourism sector. Readers can also get information on the latest data and statistics, especially regarding the growth of the sector, its economic contribution, and significant events affecting it. Furthermore, she said, it covers the conditions and dynamics of the strategic environment that affects the sector, including an analysis of the macroeconomics and digital transformation that effect changes in tourism and creative economy, among others, say Antara News . “Of course, the digitalization of products and artificial intelligence have a significant role and create challenges related to intellectual property rights,” she said. She expressed the hope that going forward, digitalization and business players’ capacity-building programs would continue to remain a focus.
