How can i send clothes to a prisoner?
Hello I have a booked visit on the 22nd December, Because of lockdown will we still be able to see our son?
Editorial Comment: At this time it is crucial that anyone with a booked visit checks with the prison before they set off to travel. We are collating as much information as possible and this can be found on our Visiting Page – https://insidetime.org/visiting-a-prison/ Things are moving very quickly and some prisons are communicating better than others; if you have a visit that can no longer take place the prison should be contacting you; however, always check with the prison before travelling.
Hi my daughter is on remand at Peterborough. Been told I’m allowed to take in extra underwear every visit .how do I go about this am I allowed to take it with or do I have to hand it in somewhere
Hi my husbands just been recalled I’m very worried as we just found out he has cancer and he has been aloud to call home.
My experience as a prisoner was at HMP Bedford (B cat local), HMP The Mount (C cat), HMP Springhill (D cat open). At Bedford when my wife visited me she was seated first. We were all pre processed and all come through more or less at the same time so you got your full visit. At the mount it was really poor. They processed the visitors in batches so my wife was faced with get there an hour early and be first in the que or risk losing a lump of our visit. At the mount the visitor came into the hall then at the other end the prisonsers were processed one at a time. Of these two broken systems mis-alligned you could easily lose half your visit.
At Springhill we were all allowed into the hall first. Then the visitors all came in within 10 minutes of each other. This is D cat so security is less of an issue.
Is this your first visit ?
When visiting do you enter the visiting room before the prisoner or are they sat waiting?
They are already sat waiting.

How much money can u take in to the prison on a visit plus if u haven’t got photo I.d what will they except
Editorial Comment: You can usually take up to £20. Prisons prefer coins rather than notes and this is easier for tea bar and imperative for vending machines. If you do not have a photo ID contact the prison to find out what they will accept (usually three original utility bills

Visiting the prison
Maintaining contact with family members or close friends is an important part of the rehabilitation process and helps to support our prisoners during their sentence. Our large, open-plan visits halls provide a relaxed atmosphere for both prisoners and their visitors. With refreshments available to purchase (card payments ONLY) and play areas for younger children, we want to make your visiting experience as comfortable and enjoyable as possible.
We understand that visiting a prison can be quite daunting, especially if it is your first visit, so we try to make your experience as positive as possible. We want you to enjoy your visit so we operate a zero tolerance for violence and aggressive behaviour to help us maintain a calm, friendly environment.
Children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
Prohibited items There are certain items that are not allowed in a prison environment. Please take the time to read and familiarise yourself with the list. View the prohibited items list .
We provide lockers for you to store personal belongings such as wallets, mobile phones and tobacco.
Smoke-free site HMP & YOI Bronzefield is a smoke free site. We therefore do not allow any tobacco, lighters, vapes or other smoking paraphernalia in the visits hall.

There’s a soft play area for little ones and a small kiosk to get a drink (similar to inside the prison, this is card payments only) . It’s best to use the toilet facilities here before you go into the visits hall.
You will be directed to the main prison building where our visits hall is based. Here you can hand in any property that you have brought with you for the person you are visiting.

If you refuse to be searched, you will not be allowed to enter the prison. Please be advised that we have a drug detecting machine which, if proven positive, will determine whether your visit continues and if it continues under closed conditions.

Keep in touch with someone at Swaleside
There are several ways you can keep in touch with a prisoner during their time at Swaleside.
Phone calls
Prisoners have phones in their cells but will always have to call you. They must buy phone credits to do this.
They can phone anyone named on their list of friends and family. This list is checked by security when they first arrive so it may take a few days before they are able to call. This can take longer depending on individual cases.
You can also exchange voicemails using the Prison Voicemail service .
Officers may listen to phone calls as a way of preventing crime and helping keep people safe.
You can send emails to someone in Swaleside using the Email a Prisoner service .
You can write at any time.
Include the Prisoners name and prisoner number on the envelope. You must also write your own name and address on the back of the envelope.
If you do not know their prisoner number, contact Swaleside .
All post, apart from legal letters, will be opened and checked by officers.
Send money and gifts
You can use the free and fast online service to send money to someone in prison.
You can no longer send money by bank transfer, cheque, postal order or send cash by post.
If you cannot use the online service, you may be able to apply for an exemption - for example if you:
- are unable to use a computer, a smart phone or the internet
- do not have a debit card
This will allow you to send money by post.
Gifts and parcels
Prisoners can apply for permission to receive an annual Birthday clothing parcel which can be posted in from friends and family.
You can also send prisoners money as well which they can use to buy items through a catalogue system.
There are limits to the number of items a prisoner can receive. Please discuss these when you speak with him.
All parcels will be opened and checked by officers.
Life at Swaleside
Swaleside is committed to providing a safe and educational environment where prisoners convicted of serious offences can make positive use of long sentences.
Security and safeguarding
Every prisoner at Swaleside has a right to feel safe. The staff are responsible for their safeguarding and welfare at all times.
For further information about what to do when you are worried or concerned about someone in prison visit the Prisoners’ Families helpline website .
Arrival and first night
When a prisoner first arrives at Swaleside, they will be able to contact a family member by phone. This could be quite late in the evening, depending on the time they arrive.
They will get to speak to someone who will check how they’re feeling and ask about any immediate health and wellbeing needs.
Each prisoner that arrives at Swaleside gets an induction that lasts about a week. They will meet professionals who will help them with:
- health and wellbeing, including mental and sexual health
- any substance misuse issues, including drugs and alcohol
- personal development in custody and on release, including skills, education and training
- other support (sometimes called ‘interventions’), such as managing difficult emotions
Everyone also finds out about the rules, fire safety, and how things like calls and visits work.
Accommodation
Around 1,100 prisoners live at Swaleside across 8 wings. All prisoners get their own cells, access to in-cell phones and in-cell laptops.
Education and work
Prisoners have access to a broad programme of learning opportunities provided by Amersham and Wickham College. These range from basic skills, such as English and maths, to distance learning with the Open University. Swaleside is part of the Prisons ICT Academy (PICTA) which helps prepare prisoners for work in information and communications technology (ICT) roles.
