In fact, Women's Health editors tested and rounded up seven of their favorite picks to help you decide on the best one for you. Before you shop though, here are a few things to keep in mind.

What to consider

The goal is to find something that will fit all your personal care items without taking up a ton of space, being mindful that TSA rules will also limit the sizes of these products. "TSA’s 3-1-1 rule states that all liquids must be in containers that are 3.4 ounces or 100 milliliters or less and fit inside one clear, quart-sized, resealable bag," says travel expert and blogger at The Smart Travel Guide Peggy Carlaw. "The trick to packing a toiletry bag is decanting your own products into small containers or purchasing travel-sized containers." This hack will save you space while lowering your bag weight. Once you do this, choose a bag that's big enough to hold the amount of containers and makeup you're traveling with.

Finding a bag that fits within your budget is the priority. That said, certain materials are more travel-friendly than others. Carlaw recommends a bag made from either nylon or polyester. "These are long-lasting, lightweight, water-resistant, and easy to clean," she says. "Cotton and some other fabrics are not waterproof, hard to keep clean, and not sturdy enough to protect their contents," she adds.

Water-resistance

While this feature is optional, having a water-resistant bag will ensure that everything else in your suitcase will stay dry if any of your toiletries spill out or leak during travel. At the same time, if your luggage gets wet or clothes get damp, all the items in your toiletry bag (like powders, medications, and electronics) will stay dry. This is especially helpful if you're traveling somewhere where the humidity is high, Carlaw says.

"It's easy to see everything that's in the bag without having to spread everything out on the sink and make a mess," says WH senior beauty editor Danielle Jackson. She adds that this bag eliminates the need to bring two toiletry bags with her since the pockets are extra spacious.

It's worth noting that while this bag is fashion-forward, it doesn't have clear pockets and isn't big enough to guarantee that all your travel must-haves can be stored away.

Ultimately, it will securely store whatever you do travel with, though. WH executive digital director Amanda Woerner, who has been using hers for years, is a fan of this bag for its overall quality. "I love the matching neutral color, and the bigger size means that I can still squeeze in some of my full-size products," says Walsh. She notes that one downside to the rounded shape of the bags is that you lose some of the extra space that you may get from a square pouch.

Though we found the bag to be even roomier than expected, there are so many individual compartments including a clear cosmetic bag, a zippered pouch, two mesh linings, and an exterior pocket, to name a few. You won't be reaching into a bottomless pit, rummaging around for individual products here. We also love that the bag zips open wide enough for you to reach inside with ease. We packed it with both large and small items, from travel-size liquid bottles to makeup brushes, and there was still room for more.

You might be wondering why you need a waterproof toiletry bag, since it's usually tucked into a larger bag when you're traveling. The answer is simple: bathroom sinks. What’s a dopp kit, anyway? Though the term is used interchangeably with toiletry bag today, the dopp kit was originally devised by German leather maker Charles Doppelt and was popular with military personnel in the 20th century. It typically takes the silhouette seen here in this Béis bag: a large main compartment, sometimes with side pockets.

Béis' dopp kit, however, has an extra compartment beneath the main one (like the well-known Béis weekender bag ). On the plus side, we absolutely love having all this extra space. In our tests, we were able to fit the capacity of three standard toiletry bags into this one. So if you're an overpacker, this is the bag for you. Note that you can only open one compartment at a time, though — the top one needs to be closed if you open the bottom one, otherwise all your items will fall out. But a big pro to this setup is that it's a very sturdy dopp kit, and it stands alone with ease, thanks to its wide base.

Though we consider it sturdy enough to stand on its own, we also found it flexible enough to stuff into a packed weekender.

As for storage capabilities, there's a main compartment that's accessible via a double zipper, which means the kit opens nice and wide for you to be able to access your items. That main compartment can fit bulkier items, while smaller items can fill the pockets along the sides. There are also two separate side pockets, one of which is designed to hold wet items.

And for another, it's a water-resistant case, which means it can handle being splashed on a bathroom counter.

The compartments are both the success and the downfall of this toiletry bag. We were beyond impressed with the amount of space inside the main compartment, as well as with the two side compartments with mesh pockets. But we found that the main compartment was almost too spacious and could benefit from another divider of some kind. Given its size, it could also benefit from a double zipper opening, which would allow you to access more items throughout the bag than the existing single zipper.

Luxury brand Tumi doesn't only make high-end suitcases and travel bags — it also makes high-end toiletry bags. Made from ballistic nylon, this is one of the most durable toiletry bags out there, and it wouldn't be surprising if this bag lasted years, even with regular use.

Its best feature is the fact that it opens like a clamshell, with two distinct compartments in each half. That makes it easy to access everything in the bag, whether you're laying it flat on a countertop or you're hanging it via the attached hook. There are four pockets, including one water-resistant one, and two elastic loops to hold products like toothbrushes or razors. We think it’s a reasonably spacious bag, but only for travel-size products — that's why we'd recommend it for short trips rather than long ones.

Tips for Buying a Toiletry Bag

Look at the design of the bag.

Some toiletry bags are voids — they have one cavernous space to fit all your items. But others are separated into compartments with pockets and pouches to keep your items in place. Depending on what you're storing in your toiletry bag, you might prefer more organizational tools than a single open space. Some toiletry bags have additional features like built-in mirrors or removable pouches. Also consider the material: more durable, water-resistant materials are ideal for toiletry bags, since they'll be getting quite a bit of use on the road.

Consider capacity and the items you pack

What do you plan on putting in a toiletry bag? If you're a minimalist who carries very few toiletries — say, just face wash and toothpaste — you might only need a small case. But if you have an extensive skincare routine — including sunscreen and after-sun lotion — and you travel with all your makeup, you'll need a bag with enough space for everything.

Think about portability

If you plan on taking your toiletry bag in your carry-on, you'll want it to be as compact and lightweight as possible to save room for everything else in your bag. And if you're packing liquids, gels, or aerosols, make sure your items’ sizes comply with the TSA's 3-1-1 rule . If you're checking your toiletry bag, though, you might have more flexibility with size and weight.

Since toiletry bags frequently come into contact with liquids — either from leaking products or from the bathroom counter — water-resistant or waterproof materials are best. Another factor to consider is durability. Toiletry bags are typically fairly heavily used when you travel, so it's best to look for tear-proof fabric that will hold up over time.

Great topic. I find my travel toiletry necessities change, depending on whether I’m doing an overnight, weekend or or two week trip overseas. It’s nice to have choices and you have some very practical ideas. As well as pretty ones.

I have 3 of these but call me Goldilocks, I’m still searching! Someone gifted me the Bagsmart and I never use it – too big for my carry on. I have been using the Bago and it works fine if I don’t put anything in the sides and re-organize once I put liquids back in. Material is stiff so it doesn’t pack down much. It has lasted many years, trips and spills so I keep using it. My teenage kids use the Norway. It’s cheap and won’t last too long but it was compact and functional for a month-long trip.

I purchased the BAGSMART and love it. I just bought their cord organizer bag. And, this year for birthday’s I am buying that combo for my daughters. I keep them packed and ready to go and it has made traveling so much easier.

The best ever were Galante bags. They’d bi-or triple fold; have 7 see-through zip compartments and a big enough hanger for a towel bar or even shower rod. They offered several attractive print fabrics for the outside. And they last many years. Unfortunately I haven’t been able to reach them by phone or email, so I don’t know if they’re still manufacturing. I’m happy to submit a picture if someone wants to create more!

I compared eBags pack it flat and Bagail pack it flat. I found that any bag that folds over itself adds too much bulk. I use the eBags for my toiletries and the Bagail for my cosmetics and brushes.

I like both of these bags. Lightweight, expandable, good organizational pockets and compartments. Since Bagail is quite a bit less expensive I recommend that one over eBags. I could probably get everything into one but like having cosmetics separated from my regular toiletries. I can easily carry both of them in my personal item on the plane.

I do not use a toiletry bag. I use as many 1qt ziplock bags as I need. One for makeup, one for shower stuff, one for tooth care, one for bandaids, one for hair stuff, etc. I label each with a permanent marker and they are see-through, never very full, and really easy to tuck into tiny spaces in your carry-on bag. You can pull them out at a hotel as you need them. I have never gone back to toiletry bags because they are so bulky!

Is there a bag that has a removable TSA regulation pouch? I hate having two bags, one clear for TSA and one with everything else. I’d love to find one that has a snap in or zip in TSA pouch. Anything out there?

I use the Travelon Wet/Dry quart bag (which is not mentioned in this blog post but it was recommended in another article on TFG) and it has gone through TSA checkpoints several times with no issue, even though it is not removable.

Hi I have see through zip up “sandwich bag” style bags for my toiletries as, if you are going carry on these are the weightiest items and I put them into my handbag which can be taken out when getting inspected by customs as they can see through to make sure items are only 100mls each.

Hi! Thanks for the article – always good stuff here. One things perplexes me though – I find that any toiletry bag on the market, even on this list – has the “convenience” of a hook for hanging. But, pretty much most of the time I travel there is no where appropriate to hang a bag, and if there is, everything in the bag just pops out due to the weight of the items in the bag as it loses it’s shape. Quite frustrating. I have considered alternative bags, such as fishing tackle bags or electronics accessories, but I wanted to know if you can think other bags that might avoid this problem?

She said that hanging a bag is inconvenient but you send her to a sight for hanging toiletry bags! I too find this problem. There is no place to hang one, or if there is the place is far from convenient. Also everything falls out of the open compartment. Very frustrated.

My LL Bean hanging bag does not ever fall forward and things do not tip out. All 3 net pockets zip from left to right. It also has side pockets for taller items which zip separately from the main compartments. I have always found a place to hang it in hotels, air bnbs, cruise ships etc., either at the end of a towel rack, or behind the bathroom door if there’s a hook there, or from the shower rod in a pinch. That way if there’s only a pedestal sink I’m never stuck. I think it’s maybe the way you arrange your items? I can post a photo if it would help? I never even unpack it at home-it hangs on a hook behind the bathroom door so I can easily access it every day, and grab and go for quick packing in a hurry.

Hi, I’ve had the same problem sometimes, so have started using an old fashioned shower curtain hook as an alternate or additional way to secure the hanging bags. It does keep it from falling over too if you attach it to tha bag’d handle.

I now use 2 separate, small Sea to Summit bags. They are clear plastic on one side so I can see everything. They are opaque nylon on the other side. To keep a neat appearance in my hotel bathroom, I turn the bag over on the bathroom counter and have the fabric side up to hide contents. I don’t want any more clutter in a hotel room or bathroom than is already necessary. One bag is dry toiletries, the other is for liquid. When I go through TSA, I take the liquid one out for them to look at if asked. They are two different colors. This is really working for me.

Love my Tumi Monaco Travel Kit, it’s a hanging bag with four sections, three with transparent faces so you can see what’s in that section, and one that’s a smaller pouch that’s solid and can be zipped of and used separately. Two of the pouches are a single space, one pouch has dividers, they all zip close. I’ve had product seep and it hasn’t made it beyond the pouch it’s stored in. Spills clean up easily.

I love my Rick Steves toiletry bag. It is similar to the ebags flat bag, but it was a separate hanging bag that holds 3 travel size toiletry items (shampoo, conditioner, face wash, in my case), and has two loops (razor and pumice stick). I can hang that in the shower for shower use even when there aren’t any shelves there.

My husband has the same bag (in black instead of my yellow) and he also loves it.

Personally, I love my Christian Dior waterproof toiletry bag. it has lots of pockets, is perfect for my mini perfumes and cosmetics and is slim and classically beautiful. They don’t make them any more but you can find them just by Googling “christian dior waterproof toiletry bag”.
