What to see in Mallorca?

Mallorca is the largest island of the Balearic Islands, a jewel of the Mediterranean that hides a great history, lots of monuments, curiosities, legends and many activities to do.

Discover the island of Mallorca with our official guides , exclusive tours from our experts.

Here are some ideas or activities of what to see and what to do in Mallorca.

Visit Valldemossa

If you come to Mallorca, you cannot miss the unique village of Valldemossa, located in a natural environment with a singular cultural heritage. It was built on the site of an old Islamic farmhouse more than 9 centuries ago.

You will find tiles in every doorway and façade that will lead you to the birthplace of the only Mallorcan Saint and patron saint of Valldemossa: Catalina Tomas i Gallard.

You can also visit the palace of King Sancho of Mallorca, which was later transformed into the Valldemossa Charterhouse.

Inside you will be able to recognise the cells of the Carthusian monks of the Order of Saint Bruno. From the 19th century onwards, they were adapted and converted into private quarters that were rented out to the first foreign travellers who came to the islands: Frédéric Chopin and his wife “George Sand”, as well as the famous Archduke Lluis Salvador.

To visit the village of Sóller is to travel back in time. Its curious name comes from the Arabic ‘suliar’, which means golden bowl, an apt name to describe the fertile valley of orange trees that surrounds it.

To wander through the streets of this beautiful town wrapped in black limestone is to mingle with the Mallorcan architecture and French-influenced palaces that coexist with Modernist buildings such as the neo-Gothic church of San Bartomeu and the bank of Sóller.

Try the original train and tram, which for more than a century connected this corner of the island with the city of Palma.

Visit Soller

In a privileged enclave in the Serra de Tramontana, halfway between Valldemossa and Sóller, you will discover Deià. A magical place, surrounded by the torrent des Racó and its beautiful stone streets. If you go to the parish church of San Juan Bautista, just behind it is the cemetery. Many of the painters, musicians and poets who have lived in Deià and who came here in the 1960s and 1970s are buried there, such as the famous writer Robert Graves, whose tomb is today almost a place of pilgrimage and his house a museum.

But what really makes this place special is its location at the top of the village with incredible views of the Mediterranean Sea.

If there is a sacred place for anyone who practises cycling, it is Sa Calobra. The cycling route to and from this place is considered one of the most emblematic cycling routes in the world. A relentless 9.5 km climb that beats many top cyclists and awakens the ambition of many others looking to add a new challenge to their personal list.

How about enjoying, as long as it’s not high season, a beach with crystal clear turquoise waters surrounded by immense mountains.

The Torrent de Pareis at its mouth is the deepest canyon in Europe. Many hikers walk the route of the torrent in the months of low rainfall.

Visit Sa Calobra

Visit the monastery of lluc.

The Sanctuary of Lluc is a place of pilgrimage and considered a spiritual centre in Mallorca, founded at the beginning of the 13th century, which attracts pilgrims from all over the world. Its name (Lluc) comes from the name given by the Romans to the natural site where the sanctuary is located (Lucus), which meant “sacred forest”.

The Virgin of Lluc is the patron saint of Mallorca. Legend has it that a shepherd boy found the image of the Virgin of Lluc on the mountain while driving his father’s sheep and goats. The image was then taken to the local parish priest. However, the next day it reappeared in the place where the little boy had discovered it. It was therefore concluded that the Virgin wanted to remain there, so a small chapel was erected at the exact spot where she had been found.

Get to know the municipality of Alcudia with more than 2000 years of history, when the Roman consul Quintus Caecilius Metellus incorporated Mallorca into the Republic of Rome in the year 123 B.C., founding Palma and Pollentia. During the Muslim domination it was a farmhouse, and after the Christian conquest, during the reign of Jaume II, the medieval walls surrounding the city centre were built. You can stroll around and contemplate from the top the beauty of this “most faithful city”, a title granted by Charles I in 1523 for remaining faithful and not joining the revolt of Ses Germanies .

You can also spend the afternoon on the beach of Alcanada , ideal for families as there is an area with trees where you can have a picnic in the shade. From the sand you can see the Alcanada lighthouse built in the 19th century.

Visit Alcúdia

Visit pollensa.

To walk through the town of Pollensa is to travel through more than 10 centuries of history. It is said that the area was known as Al-Bulansa in Islamic times and with the Romans as Pollentia, although the Roman city of Pollentia is currently in the municipality of Alcúdia.

The cultural richness of this medieval town, founded in 1229, shows us the Roman bridge, the parish church of Our Lady of the Angels, the tower of Albercuix, among others.

You will also enjoy the wonderful landscape that surrounds this place surrounded by high mountains, valleys and the coastline that has the longest coastline of the whole island of Mallorca.

The Cap de Formentor is a privileged enclave far from the most touristy areas of Mallorca that has served as inspiration for numerous artists who have found an escape valve for their poems and paintings.

It is made up of cliffs over 100 metres high from which we can enjoy spectacular views.

In addition to the different viewpoints and the marvellous calas to see in Formentor (Cala Formentor, Cala Figuera and Cala Murta), you must visit the Formentor lighthouse and the Albercuix watchtower. We also recommend you to visit the surrounding villages: Pollença, Alcúdia or Deià.

Visit the Cap de Formentor

Visit artà and the caves of artà.

Totally off the beaten track of mass tourism, the municipality of Artà has managed to preserve the traditions of a hospitable and typically Mediterranean village.

You will enjoy its cobbled streets, the Conqueror’s Square and the Sanctuary of Mare de Déu de Sant Salvador. A mid-14th century building (completely restored in the 18th century), it is located at the top of Puig de Salvador, 509 metres above sea level. The views are spectacular.

Just 900 metres away, you will find the Talayotic settlement of Ses Païses, one of the most important and best-preserved archaeological sites in the Balearic Islands. And finally, in the coastal area, about 12 km away, you can enter the marvellous caves of Artà.

Visit Sineu

Visit binissalem.

In Binissalem, you can find remains from the Talayotic, Roman and Islamic periods. Its wells and canals (reflected in the local toponymy) are remnants of other times.

In the 18th and early 19th centuries, there are buildings in Binissalem that have consolidated the village as a historic-artistic site (1983), such as Can Marc, Can Beltran, Can Garrover, Can n’Antic, Can Novell, Can Corneta, Can Tiró de Ses Bolles.

Considered the capital of the wine region, it was the first area to receive a DO (Denomination of Origin) in 1991. It is a good place to taste the local wines among its different wineries.

Walking tours in Palma

Discover Palma de Mallorca with our private walking tours through the Old Town.

Take a walk and discover the history of the city of Palma de Mallorca. With our walking tours you can learn about the history of the old town of Palma together with its curiosities, anecdotes and magical corners that will make your visit a unique experience.

Private tours in Palma

Our walking tours are designed to discover Palma in a private way, without crowds and at your own pace. We adapt to your tastes.

With Mallorca Premium Tours you can design your own route or be guided by our official local guides to create your perfect walking tour for you and your companions.

Exclusive walking tours in Mallorca

In addition to walking tours through the Old Town of Palma de Mallorca, you can also discover some of the most charming towns in the Serra de Tramuntana such as Valldemossa, Sóller and Deià or even get to Artà, a small town in the eastern part of Mallorca and visit its magnificent caves, a wonder of nature.

Visit the Old Town Palma

An example of a private walking tour may be the main area of the Old Town, also known as “Emblematic Palma”.

On this private tour you will discover the most emblematic historical buildings in the city of Palma de Mallorca, such as the Royal Palace of l’Almudaina, built during the Muslim period (10 th century) and residence of governors and kings in Palma de Mallorca and of course the Cathedral of Mallorca, considered one of the most spectacular cathedrals in the Mediterranean Sea. In addition to strolling through squares, alleys and visiting the entrance to the Palma City Hall where the giants are exhibited, the famous “correfoc” del Drac de na Coca. Without forgetting the modernist and historicist buildings that since the 20 th century we find in Palma such as Can Forteza Rey and Can Corbellà respectively.

Visit the Cathedral of Mallorca and the Bellver castle

On this private tour we will show you the jewels of Palma de Mallorca: The Cathedral of Mallorca (also known as La Seu ) built between the 13 th and 17 th centuries in a Gothic style. Its location near the sea makes it the “Cathedral of the Sea”, the only cathedral reflected above the sea.

The other Gothic architectural wonder is Bellver Castle. Built in the 14 th century by Jaume II, it was conceived as a palace-fortress for Mallorcan royalty and strategically located to prevent future attacks. This castle has a circular floor plan and has been used as a residence, a refuge in during plagues and rebellions, a military and civil prison and currently functions as a history museum for the city of Palma.

Visit Valldemossa and Sóller

Valldemossa, a place of peace and quietness. It is worth going through its cobbled streets and observing the entrance of the houses and businesses where we can find a small ceramic plaque with the image of the saint of Santa Catalina Tomàs. It is also essential to visit La Cartuja, an old 14 th century royal palace, transformed into a Carthusian monastery in the 15 th century and currently a museum; and taste its most exquisite pastry: the famous Coca de Patata.

Sóller stands out for the modernist buildings, built in the 20 th century, highlighting the Can Prunera house-museum and the parish church of Sant Bartomeu. You cannot leave Sóller without having tasted homemade ice cream and oranges, or having travelled on the famous Tren de Sóller, a wooden train opened in 1912.

Exploring Coves, Snorkeling, & San Antonio in Ibiza

image from onboard Boat tour near Ibiza,

Ibiza is associated with being the top party destination in Spain, however, our tour experiences of the island are all about the quieter side of life and living life as a local while exploring the historic old town and the sights and sounds of San Antonio on the Northcentral coast.

Guided Tours of San Antonio in Ibiza

aerial drone view of San Antonio, bay and coast in Ibiza

The first ‘must-see’ is the UNESCO-listed Dalt Vila, an exotic and historic walled town. If you are interested in exploring beautiful coves then Ibiza has some of the most stunning to be found not only in the Balearics but in all the Mediterranean islands. Cala Bassa, Cala Conta, and Cala Salada are some of the island’s most beautiful examples, just a few kilometers from San Antonio.

San Antonio itself has an attractive marina that is perfect for a stroll, browsing the nearby shops and restaurants, or even doing water sports such as stand-up paddle surfing or scuba diving.

San Antonio is also enjoying a budding reputation as a wine region and a private tasting session on the island while the sun sets is the perfect way to round off your Ibiza tour. We would recommend Bodega Can Rich vineyard and winery.

Best of Menorca & Formentera Balearic Islands

tour of Standing Stones, Menorca

The 2nd largest Balearic island, Menorca is the least touristic of the Balearics and is somewhat of an undiscovered gem that offers a surprising variety of things to do.

A UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, it has an abundance of ancient settlements and foreign influences. Its pristine nature reserves make it a paradise for wildlife lovers and hikers alike. Some of our most recommended tour experiences on Menorca include:

The Talayotic Route : Menorca features over 1,500 Iron Age standing stones and sites across the island Explore the megalithic taulas and talayots from the Talayotic civilization.

Bodega Binifadet : Wine estate

Monte Toro :  In the center of the otherwise flat island you can ascend the 350 meters to the summit to visit the 17th Century Sanctuary of the Verge del Toro at the top of the hill and take in the breathtaking views.

Stay in Ciutadella Old Town : Explore the Medieval old town with your guide

Mallorca? A great place to spend a party vacation! That’s what many people think. And that’s partly true, of course. But only in part. The German loved vacation island has so much more to offer.

Mallorca! It’s sun, mountains, sea, culture and cuisine, and a capital city that no longer has to hide behind other European metropolises.

So that you can get a good overview of the island, We’ll introduce to you here the 22 best sights and highlights of Mallorca.

Buy tickets for attractions in advance

Mallorca is one of the most popular destinations in Spain. So hours-long lines at the major attractions are pretty much a given.

That’s why it is definitely worth booking tickets in advance for the most famous Mallorca sights. They allow you to simply skip the line and go head straight for the entrance.

What to do in Mallorca - Sightseeing map

So that you can get a first overview of Mallorca and can see where the sights are located on the island, we’ve plotted out all the sights on a map. You can also save the map to your computer or phone:

The Old Town of Palma

Plaza Mayor

In recent years, the capital of Mallorca has developed into an equally high quality and trendy year-round destination. Barcelona’s little sister, as it’s so often called, is all grown up.

In Palma, you’ll meet creative and culture loving people from all generations and nations. There are new design hotels, modern restaurant concepts and diverse shopping opportunities.

The Old Town itself is full of sights: winding alleyways, an imposing cathedral, the Royal Palace and the palm-lined harbor promenade are ideal for a city stroll full of culture.

To a guided tour through Palma and ticket to the cathedral

In addition, Palma has excellent flight connections and can be easily reached from all German airports.

Fishing village on Mallorca

This is one of our favorite places in Mallorca: Portocolom . You just have to like this small port town on the east coast. Nearly no other place in Mallorca has preserved the original charm of the traditional fishing village as well as Portocolom.

To this day, many residents of Portocolom go out to sea early in the morning to throw out their nets. It’s tranquil and wonderfully calm here. Not a hint of mass tourism.

You can either relax on a small beach, book a boat ride with a typical Mallorcan Llaut , or you can treat yourself to something delicious in the many small restaurants and bars directly on the harbor.

Our tip : come to Portocolom really early in the morning, rent a stand up paddle board and paddle along the cove towards the North.

Sant'Elm

Only a handful of hotels, a few restaurants and a miniature harbor: it’s almost a miracle that there’s still a town as tranquil as Sant Elm on Mallorca’s coast.

The small, almost sleepy hollow in the far west of the island has remained a quiet village across the years that’s particularly popular among the locals .

The village is not the only true haven of peace though, the beach is also dream-like and isn’t as overcrowded as many others in the area.

Our tip for the active : from Sant Elm, you can take a wonderful hike to the old Trappist monastery La Trapa. For the well signposted hike, you’ll need around 3.5 hours and should bring some stamina along.

Our tip for the less active : Sant Elm is a perfect point of departure for a trip to La Dragonera, an island off the coast. The boat ride alone is a tiny highlight.

Fishing village Cala Figuera

Cala Figuera Mallorca

The fishing village of Cala Figuera on the south of the east coast near Santanyi is considered one of the most beautiful coastal towns of the island. And we can only agree with that.

Cala Figuera, with its deeply cut bay, is not only super photogenic , this spot also exudes its own special charm. Stroll along the cute harbor, past the pretty white houses and the small boats and watch the goings-on.

Our tip : It’s best to come here during the afternoon! Then you can watch how the fishing boats come back into the harbor and in the evening you can try the freshly caught fish in one of the restaurants with a view of the small bay.

Port de Sóller

Sóller, the center of orange production and the capital of Tramuntana, is located in the northwest of Mallorca and has more than 10,000 residents. So quite large for Mallorcan standards.

The cute city with its old, tiled mansions, narrow alleyways and lively square in front of the parish church Sant Bartomeu is definitely worth a trip.

Orange groves reach into the old town, where a nostalgic streetcar made of wood connects the city of Sóller with the Port de Sóller, and exude a wonderful fragrance with their flowers.

Our tip : drink a fresh pressed orange juice from the fruits of the surrounding fields in one of the many bars and restaurants. Or try fresh orange ice cream from the Fabrica de Gelats.

Valldemossa

Valldemossa

Valldemossa is one of the most beautiful mountain villages of the island. It became famous for its prominent guests, such as the French writer George Sand and composer Frédéric Chopin, as well as for the former Carthusian monastery. You can see the monastery’s green roof from a distance.

Valldemossa, with its almost 2,000 inhabitants, is not just one of the most beautiful towns on the northwest coast, but also by far the most visited. Up to a half-million tourists crowd through the narrow alleys here every year. You heard it right: crowd — in the truest sense of the word.

Our tip : take a little detour and drive down the switchbacks shortly before Valldemossa to Port de Valldemossa. Here, you can admire the gorgeous mountain silhouettes while swimming in the crystal clear water of the small beach.

To the guided day tour to Palma and Valldemossa

Deía

Away from the tourist strongholds, the island comes to rest. The idyllic mountain village Deià, which everyone always raves about, is just such a place.

Surrounded by olive, lemon and almond trees , there’s no trace of huge hotels at the foot of the Es Teix Mountain. Quite the contrary: small, exclusive boutique hotels attract Mallorca vacationers to the small town of 800 inhabitants year after year.

The galleries of the artist village are a must for all art enthusiasts. In spite of all the hype, Deià has luckily maintained its charm to this day. It’s best to come and see it for yourself.

Our tip : be sure to drive from Valldemossa to Deià. The winding route is one of the most beautiful and most interesting.

Cuevas de Artà

Cuevas de Artá

Mallorca conceals a geological treasure underground: fantastic cave formations that were discovered by chance and only a few of which have been made accessible to visitors.

The Cuevas de Artà, for example. These caves, situated some 40 meters high above the coast , are among the major attractions of the island, though they aren’t as heavily visited as the caves at Porto Cristo.

The Cuevas de Artà include stalactites with strange shapes and extraordinary proportions , such as the Reina de las Columnas which is truly a Queen of the Columns with a height of over 20 meters.

To the website

Dragon Caves in Porto Cristo

Dragon Caves in Porto Cristo

Near the port town of Porto Cristo , in the east of Mallorca, are the largest and probably best known caves of the island: the Cuevas del Drach. At 1,200 meters long and 25 meters deep , they’re Mallorca’s largest accessible stalactite caves.

Lake Martel is 117 meters long, 30 meters wide and up to 14 meters deep. During visits to the caves, it serves as a backdrop for classical music concerts where musicians play their instruments on illuminated boats.

Our tip : you should go either really early or really late. It’s not so crowded then and you’ll still get a parking space. Even better: you park in the center of Porto Cristo, explore this nice little place, which usually gets little attention, and then walk around fifteen minutes to the caves.

Alternatively, you can also visit the caves in combination with a half-day tour through the north of Mallorca. During the tour, you’ll also visit a pearl factory.

To the half-day tour to the Dragon Caves and pearl factory

Cap de Formentor

Cap de Formentor

Jagged rocks, wide views and blue sea. The best known and most visited lookout point of Mallorca is without a doubt Mirador Es Colomer at Cap de Formentor. This lookout point is on a narrow promontory that extends far into the sea in the northeast of the island.

The island council blocked access for general car traffic to the northernmost tip of Mallorca from the middle of June to the middle of September from 10:00 am to 7:00 pm. If you’d like to go to Cap de Formentor during the day, you can visit it with shuttle busses from Port de Pollença (round trip costs around 3 euros).

Even though this lookout point is no longer an insider tip, you should definitely drive the coastal route with its many switchbacks up to the lighthouse. In good weather, the view even extends to Menorca, the neighboring island 40 kilometers away, and is really breathtaking.

Our tip : pack your swimsuit, the long white sandy beach Playa de Formentor is practically on the way.

You can also book a boat tour from Alcudia to Cap de Formentor. On the tour, you’ll sail on a boat with underwater windows along the rugged coast and stop for a swim at the beach of Cala Figuera.

Mirador Es Colomer

Cúber Reservoir

Cúber Reservoir

Sometimes it seems like you’re in Patagonia, and then hints of Alpine landscapes or Scandinavian fjords will also come to mind.

Whoever takes this path feels as if they were on a trip around the world through the most beautiful natural landscapes: in the middle of the Tramuntana Mountains below the Puig Major, the highest mountain on the island, lies the Cúber Reservoir .

This spot is a perfect retreat for anyone who’d like to experience Mallorca’s nature and enjoy absolute stillness. A small path leads around the lake.

Animal lovers will also get their money’s worth here: sheep and donkeys like to accompany walkers part of the way.

Serra de Tramuntana

Mirador de Ricardo Roca

The northwest of the island, from Calvia to Pollenca, is all about the wild Tramuntana Mountains. The Serra de Tramuntana, as it’s officially called, is a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2011 and protects Mallorca from the cold north winds.

The mountain range is also an oasis for hikers : rugged rocky landscapes and breathtaking views as well as small hidden coves are the rewards for all sporty vacationers.

If you prefer it more relaxed, just take the panoramic road MA-10 from Andratx to Pollenca. It runs right through the northwest, past small mountain villages such as Banyalbufar, Fornalutx and Deià, as well as along Cúber Reservoir and the orange town of Sóller.

From Palma, you can book a guided hiking tour with a picnic through the Serra de Tramuntana.

Tour through the Serra de Tramuntana with a picnic

Botanicactus

Botanicactus

There are spikes as far as the eye can see here! In the very south of the island, on the edge of the tiny town of Ses Salines, you can find the largest botanical garden of Europe .

You might ask yourself: why also go to a botanical garden when there’s already one cactus after the next on Mallorca? That’s true, but at the Botanicactus, the diverse cacti and succulents green and bloom across more than 150,000 square meters.

In total, you can marvel at over 1,600 plant species here from across the world. And it’s guaranteed that you won’t be able to see these otherwise on the island.

Particularly nice for everyone who arrives in the low season: the garden is open all year round. Another plus for anyone on the search for beautiful photos : Botanicactus is the perfect place for great Instagram photos.

Lluc Monastery

Lluc monastery

For Mallorcans, the Lluc Monastery (actually Monestir de Lluc), which is secluded in the Serra de Tramuntana, is the most important place of pilgrimage on the island.

Three old, still well used pilgrim paths lead here in a star formation: from Sóller, from Inca and from Pollenca. Even today, the monastery is still referred to as the spiritual center of Mallorca or the heart of the island.

The high point of a visit is the basilica with the Black Madonna . But you also shouldn’t miss the small monastery museum, the calvary and the botanical garden, home to around 200 native plant species. If you’re lucky and are at the monastery at the right time, you can experience the famous boys’ choir Blauets de Lluc, which today also includes girls, live in concert.

Our tip : spend a night in the monastery rooms of Lluc. Comfortable, absolutely reasonable in price and most definitely a special Mallorca experience.

Son Marroig/Sa Foradada

Viewpoint Son Marroig

The best: from Son Marroig, the former residence of the Archduke Ludwig Salvator and today a popular wedding location, you have a magnificent view over the mountains and the sea . The perfect sunset spot.

The restaurant Sa Foradada  is close by, named for the cliff with the hole opposite. Here, you can look over the chef’s shoulder. A very special dish is on the menu: traditional Mallorcan Paella . Rumor has it that it’s the best on the whole island.

There’s only one little catch: the restaurant is only reachable by foot or boat . The path begins at the Son Marroig estate. You have to first climb over a small iron gate and then walk along the path around 50 minutes to the sea. The journey is worth it!

The Sa Foradada is also popular among stars : Tom Hanks, Michael Douglas, Halle Berry and the Mallorcan tennis ace Rafael Nadal are said to have all dined here.

Monastery Santuari de Sant Salvador near Felanitx

Sant Salvador

The former monastery Santuari de Sant Salvador majestically sits atop the approximately 500 meter high mountain of the same name and is our absolute favorite lookout point in Mallorca.

After heading right shortly after the city limits of the small town of Felanitx and continuing down the road for around 7 kilometers, you’ll reach the plateau of the monastery mountain with a view of the gigantic monument Crist Rei .

From here, you can let your gaze wander across almost all of Mallorca: the east coast with its small harbor villages as well as the many small coves, as far as Alcudia in the north of the sunny island, the Tramuntana Mountains and in clear conditions, even the group of islands around Cabrera.

Our tip : pack some bread, tomatoes, salami, cheese, beer and wine and enjoy the sunset from the monastery. If you’d like, you can also stay overnight. The Petit Hotel Hostatgeria Sant Salvador is located in the monastery, with 20 double rooms and two apartments.

To the Petit Hotel Hostatgeria Sant Salvador

Es Trenc beach

Es Trenc

This approximately 2.6 kilometer long natural beach has long been no secret, but for us it’s still one of the most beautiful beaches of the island .

Thanks to its Caribbean flair , Es Trenc is the best known beach in Mallorca, which of course has its disadvantages: it’s usually jam-packed here, especially in the high season.

It’s quite different in the low season: from October to April, the long and then often deserted sandy beach beckons you to take long walks.

Our tip : park on the less busy side of the beach, at the harbor of Sa Rapita. You can usually still get a good space here even in the high season and you won’t feel so much like you’re packed in like sardines.

If you don’t want to drive to the beach, you can also book a half-day tour on a catamaran. Then you can see the beautiful south coast of Mallorca from the water and take a snorkelling break at Es Trenc beach.

To the half-day tour on a catamaran

Playa de Formentor beach

Playa de Formentor

Total Caribbean flair : the fragrance of pine in your nose, the fine white sand between your toes and the crystal clear sea is only a few steps away. It’s said that the Playa de Fermentor is one of the most beautiful beaches of the whole Mediterranean . And that may be a good thing.

It’s about a kilometer long, but at around 10 meters wide it’s quite narrow, so there aren’t too many places to lounge. The spots below the pine trees are especially popular during the summer. The same applies here as to many other beaches: getting there early is worth it!

With a parking fee of roundabout 10 euros, it’s certainly not a beach for every day. You can combine a visit here perfectly with an excursion to Cap de Formentor. It’s located halfway from Pollenca.

Alternatively, you can save the parking fee by taking a glass-bottom boat to the beach. You’ll also have a beautiful view of the other small bays you pass.

To the tour with the glass-bottom boat

Playa de Muro beach

Playa de Muro

The approximately 5 kilometer long beach Playa de Muro is located on a forested dune area in the north of Mallorca and stretches from the popular vacation resort Port d’Alcudia to Can Picafort.

Since the beach here runs far and flat into the sea, it’s particularly popular among families with small kids . Warning to everyone without kids: it can get very noisy at times. Just before Can Picafort it gets a little quieter though.

Our tip : even though we are not a huge beach club fan and prefer small beach shacks, the beach club Ponderosa Beach is really great. Enjoy delicious food with your toes in the sand. A little drawback: you have to dig deeper into your pockets. But a cheaper alternative isn’t far: there are tasty snacks right next door at Oma & Opa .

By the way: If you feel like a bit of action and variety, coasteering on the coast of Alcudia is just right for you. Here, swimming and climbing are combined and you experience many different adventures: abseiling from cliffs, climbing along rocks or swimming through caves.

To the Coasteering excursion

Cala Varques cove

Cala Varques

Until even a few years ago, Cala Varques (pronounced Cala Barques) was a total insider tip. Only a few tourists knew about this great Cow Cove , which owes its name to the four-legged visitors that show up on the beach every now and then.

Today it’s unfortunately no longer a secret, but it’s still great. The cove is a paradise for sailors, climbers and nature enthusiasts . Best you come early in the morning or late in the afternoon, when most tourists disappear into their hotels and the beach is slowly taken over by the local hippies .

Small drawback : since 2018, you unfortunately can no longer drive right to the beach, and instead have to park at a parking lot and then walk around 30 minutes to the cove.

Our tip : from Cala Romantica there’s a great hike to Cala Varques. It takes around twice as long as the journey from the parking lot, but is all the more beautiful for that.

You can also book a guided Glass-Bottom catamaran tour along the East Coast to Cala Varques.

To the catamaran trip to Cala Varques

Sa Calobra cove

Sa Colabra

You can only get to the cove of Sa Calobra by boat from Port de Sóller or via a 14 kilometer long and narrow road with a lot of switchbacks. Especially during the summer there’s quite a lot of traffic, and you have to continually make room for busses and cyclists.

To the boat trip to the bay of Sa Calobra

We would rather come here in the low season. Not only because the roads are much emptier then, but also because the cove itself is much more enjoyable. In the summer, it’s almost impossible to get a good spot there.

Even if that all doesn’t sound too positive, the place is amazingly beautiful and swimming between the steep cliffs is really an experience. The somewhat difficult journey is definitely worth it.

Red Lightning: historical train from Palma to Sóller

El Tren de Sóller

It’s one of the hallmarks of Mallorca: the train from Palma to Sóller, also called the Red Lightning or the Orange Express . Since 1912, it runs daily from the train station at Placa de Espana in Palma to Sóller in the northwest of the island.

Anyone expecting a train behind this fast-paced name that rushes along the 28 kilometer route through the Serra Tramuntana at high speed would be mistaken. The nostalgic train takes its time and only arrives in Sóller after almost an hour ride through almond, orange and olive groves, dark tunnels and deep ravines.

The fun isn’t so cheap at 25 euros for a round trip. But it’s definitely worth it. Very important: don’t forget your camera , the train even runs a little slower in some places.

Our tip : from Sóller, continue by street tram to Port de Sóller. If you’re already in the area, you should definitely see the little port town.

You can also kill two birds with one stone and visit all the great mountain villages in the area in one day. You can do this with a guided day tour with the Red Lightning from Palma. Besides Sóller and Port de Sóller, you’ll also visit Valldemossa and Deía.

To the guided day tour with the Red Lightning to Sóller

General tips on sightseeing in Mallorca

Before you start with your Mallorca sightseeing tour, we have a few general tips for visiting the highlights in Mallorca.

#1 Book a rental car

Discovering Mallorca is definitely best done with a rental car . In particular, you’ll reach the small fishing villages and the secluded beaches most comfortably by car.

At the airport of Palma, but also inside the city, there are multiple rental car providers. To book a rental car you’ll simply need a valid driver’s license, an ID and a credit card.

Our tips for booking a rental car: Don’t wait too long to book a rental car. They’re particularly popular in Mallorca and so the shorter in advance you book, the more expensive the price. It’s best to get a small car – we can guarantee that it’s no fun maneuvering the narrow alleys and streets of the island with a huge limousine.

#2 Travel in the off-peak season

It’s universally known that Mallorca is very crowded in the summer. From June to the end of August, the beaches, hotels, restaurants, vista points and sights are packed.

If you’d like to do yourself, and also the island, a favor, then it’s better to visit Mallorca in the off-peak season . It’s often really nice in April/May , as well as in September/October , but the winter months also have their charm.

#3 Book a guided tour

If you don’t have any desire to drive, you can still discover the island with a guided tour. There are numerous day tours from Palma that take you by bus, car or train to the nicest spots on the island. These are the most interesting:

Winery tour through the island interior of Mallorca Island tour by bus, train, tram and boat Tramuntana tour with historic railway

This article is based on information on each operator’s website. We were surprised how little detail was generally available (and it’s possible we missed something when preparing this article or the situation has changed since we wrote it), so please be aware that the information here is not 100% accurate. Please don’t rely on it and check direct with the operator(s).

The prices usually assume two people occupying a room. If you want single occupancy, expect to pay more. Also carefully check the trip inclusions – we’ve just summarised the situation below and the inclusions may well vary for each trip.

In November 2021 we created this article on the hidden climbs of Mallorca and this article on the best routes in Mallorca with SunVelo. We also work with Mellow Jersey, who offer women’s cycling tours in Mallorca . Neither have paid to feature in this article.

Our tips for choosing a Mallorca bike tour operator

It can be tricky to get what you want out of a Mallorca cycling holiday if you’ve never been there, so that’s why we recommend using a reputable cycling tour company. But how do you know which bike tours are best? We’ve put together a few tips below, but for a more in-depth guide make sure you read our article on choosing the best bike tour companies .

1. Check the reviews

There are plenty of cycling tour in Mallorca reviews online, make sure you read them before booking a tour operator. Make sure they’re from independent or verified guests as well. You could sink a lot of money into one of these cycling holidays in Mallorca, so do your research before booking. Also try looking up Majorca cycling holidays and reading the reviews – you’ll likely find more British reviews since a lot of Brits use the Majorca spelling.

2. Make sure you and your group agree on what you want out of the trip

There’s no point booking a Mallorca cycling tour if the rest of the group want to spend their time lounging about by the pool. Get the most out of your Mallorca cycling trips by figuring out beforehand if you want guided rides and structure to your trip, or whether you’re happy finding your own way to Puig Major.

Our conclusion

We hope you’ve found this a useful overview of the kinds of Mallorca cycling holiday operators out there and the differences between them.

Some of the biggest differences we noticed between operators were:

  • where they’re based
  • how many weeks of the year they’re based in Mallorca
  • whether they have fixed departure dates or not
  • the level to which you can bespoke your trip
  • whether transfers are included in the price or not and
  • how transparent they are on group size.

Have you used any of these companies to book your Majorca cycling vacations? We’d love to hear your experiences – comment below!

palma catedral

The Parc de la Mar, meeting point

We meet at the tourist information point i n the Parc de la Mar, just below the Cathedral, at 11:00, ready to start the Free Tour and see the city of Palma de Mallorca.

After the construction of the motorway and the Paseo Marítimo there was a large gap with the old seafront. To preserve the marvellous memory of the sea bathing the wall and the image of the Cathedral in the sea, there had to be a lake where the Cathedral would be reflected. And around it a park, the Parc de la Mar.

A little history of the Parc de la Mar

The emblematic Parc de la Mar, today a venue for festivals, concerts and numerous Mallorcan events, was inaugurated in 1984, not without controversy, with the cry of “Parc sí, parquing no!”, and in whose history such important personalities as the painter Joan Miró took part.

The park, which stretches along the foot of the city walls, covers an area of approximately nine hectares, equivalent to nine football pitches.

To enjoy the show and find out what to see in Palma, we’ll be waiting for you at 11:00 at Mallorca Free Tour.

The Royal Palace of l’Almudaina

After the Parc de la Mar and an introductory explanation about the evolution of the city of Palma, in the palatial gardens of s’Hort des Rei, in front of the statue Es Foner, you will find yourself in front of the Almudaina Palace .

L’Almudaina is the Royal Palace or Royal Alcazar of the city of Palma and forms part of the National Heritage. In Arabic, Almudaina means “citadel”, “fortress” or “walled enclosure”.

This castle tells the history of Mallorca at different times, from the arrival of the Romans, during the time of the Muslims on the island, and later during the Christian conquest by the Crown of Aragon. The current castle dates from 1281 and is a modification of the Muslim fortress.

History and anecdotes of La Almudaina

After the Christian conquest of Mallorca, the seat of the Crown was established in the Almudaina and the Moorish features were largely demolished, thus adopting a Gothic style.

The Mallorcan expression “Te pareixes a s’angel de Palau” (You look like an angel of Palau), which in Spanish translates as “you look like a weather vane”, was created on the highest tower of L’Angel, crowned by a weather vane representing an angel.

Another anecdote to tell, just like the Palacio de Oriente and the Palacio de la Zarzuela in Madrid, the Palacio Real de l’Almudaina is the King’s official summer residence, although he lives in the Palacio de Marivent and only uses it for state ceremonies and receptions during the summer.

If you want to know more anecdotes and details about the Almudaina Palace, we are waiting for you in Mallorca Free Tour where you will discover what to see in Mallorca.

The Cathedral of Santa Maria de Mallorca

We leave l’Almudaina and go up the stairs that lead us in front of the Cathedral .

The Cathedral-Basilica of Santa Maria de Palma de Mallorca, also known as the Cathedral of Mallorca, Cathedral of the Sea, Cathedral of Light or La Seu in Mallorcan, is full of names, anecdotes and curiosities.

It overlooks the sea over the medieval and Renaissance walls that protected the city of Palma, and is the only Gothic cathedral that fulfils this peculiarity.

History of the Cathedral of Mallorca

Its construction began with James I, King of Aragon and Count of Barcelona after the conquest of Madina Mayurqa in 1229, which had been in Muslim hands since 903.

He decided to demolish the old mosque in order to build a large church dedicated to Saint Mary, apparently in fulfilment of a promise he had made after being saved from a shipwreck at sea.

It was not until 1630, almost 400 years later, that its construction was completed.

It has been restored on many occasions, but Gaudí’s interventions in 1904 and Miquel Barceló’s in 2007 stand out above all.

Major Rose Window of the Cathedral

Its rose window known as the “Eye of the Gothic”, with a diameter of around 12 metres, is the largest of the Gothic cathedrals in the Mediterranean. With 1,236 crystals, it offers different lighting effects such as the “Vuit” (eight) or “Festival of Light” spectacle, where the reflection of the largest rose window is projected under the opposite rose window to form an eight.

This show takes place only twice a year (on 2 February and 11 November) and attracts more than 2,000 people.

We could write lines and lines about the Cathedral but we prefer to leave some for the Free Tour, where you will discover what to see in Mallorca.

The Jewish quarter or call jueu

Located very close to the Cathedral, the Jewish quarter is characterised by its tranquillity, peace and serenity that can be breathed in its streets and alleys.

History, mysteries and anecdotes surround Mallorca’s Jewish community, which dates back to Roman times.

History and anecdotes of the call jueu

During the Middle Ages and part of the Modern Age in the city of Palma there were two Calls jueus, a name used to refer to the Jewish quarters in the territories of the Crown of Aragon, which were organised into aljamas, subject only to royal authority.

The Jewish community in Mallorca numbered around 3,000 people (approximately 15% of the city’s population) during some years of the 14th century.

In 1391, the peasant revolt ended with the storming of the Call Major in the city of Mallorca. Finally, at Easter in 1435, the official existence of the island’s Jews came to an end.

Since the 17th century, the descendants of Jewish converts have been called “Xuetes” (a mixture of the Catalan word juetó and the Mallorcan word “xuia” (bacon) used in a derogatory way) and they were singled out until the first half of the 20th century, preventing marriages and relationships.

A lot of history, mysteries and anecdotes surround the Jewish community in Palma de Mallorca. Discover the Jewish quarter with Mallorca Free Tour and what to see in Mallorca.

Mallorcan patios

Undoubtedly one of the answers to what to see in Mallorca and often omitted, are the Mallorcan patios . Very characteristic of the city, in the old town, you can find both large and small patios.

Palma is considered to be the city of patios . The old town would not be the same without the courtyards of the old manor houses, a symbol of power and social status. Writers and chroniclers coincide in pointing out that Palma’s architecture has one of its most important references in these urban houses.

History and anecdotes of Mallorcan patios

Mallorca, as an island with a strategic location in the Mediterranean Sea, adopted the construction of residences with courtyards as the most natural way of building, whose origins are based on the houses of the Roman, Muslim and Catalan cultures.

The Mallorcan courtyard is a space located halfway between the street and the house, all of which have a similar structure and had an “open-door” social function.

The history of Palma’s patios dates back to the 13th century. The oldest patios on record date back to the 14th and 15th centuries. A document from the early 19th century extracted from the Municipal Archive of Palma lists more than 500.

Today they have been converted into institutional buildings, museums and, in many cases, independent dwellings where the people of Palma live.

Undoubtedly they caused and continue to cause admiration in those who have the pleasure of stopping to appreciate them. You can’t look for what to see in Mallorca and not see its patios.

The parish church of Santa Eulàlia

After visiting the Mallorcan courtyard of Can Vivot, we stopped in front of the Church of Santa Eulàlia, one of the oldest in Palma, along with the churches of San Miquel, Sant Jaume and Santa Creu, and a must-see in Mallorca. It is also one of the parishes into which Ciutat de Mallorca was divided.

History of the parish of Santa Eulàlia

It is named after the patron saint of Barcelona, much loved by the Catalans. Of historical significance for the Kingdom of Mallorca, where the coronation of Jaume II and Jaume III as kings of Mallorca was celebrated.

It was built in the 13th century, although its façade and bell tower stand in contrast, as they were remodelled in the 19th century, due to the earthquake that occurred in Mallorca in 1851.

The terraces surrounding the church show a large number of gargoyles, representative figures from the Middle Ages with images of monsters, demons and dragons whose symbolic function was probably to protect the temple and frighten sinners.

If you want to see how scary they are, you can check them out with Mallorca Free Tour.

Cort o Palma Town Hall

We continue towards the centre of municipal life: Palma City Hall , located in the emblematic Plaza de Cort , a square you have to see in Mallorca.

The Palma Town Hall was the Hospital de San Andrés and later the Casa de la Corte del Reino de Mallorca (Court House of the Kingdom of Mallorca).

The Plaza de Cort is considered to be the kilometre 0 of Mallorca, the origin of the roads. In the centre we find the mythical and immense Cort olive tree, catalogued and protected by law and transplanted in 1989 from Pollensa, as a symbol of peace and roots.

History of Palma Town Hall

The current Town Hall building, built between 1649 and 1680, reproduces the layout of the traditional Mallorcan manor house, in the form of three descending floors crowned with an impressive overhang.

On the façade, some elements stand out, such as the balcony, with seven large windows, the clock d’en Figuera and the “Banc del si no fos” (Bank of if it wasn’t) or lazy people’s bank.

Cort was the seat of the Great and General Council, founded by Jaume I in 1249 and with power over the whole island.

With the decrees of King Philip V, the civil institutions that had formed the Kingdom of Mallorca since 1229 disappeared. The old name of Palma, which replaced that of the City of Mallorca, was also recovered.

The modernist buildings of Palma

If you are an architecture lover, the most outstanding buildings to see in Mallorca are the modernist buildings, most of which follow the Catalan modernist trend.

The Grand Hotel

It is perhaps the most dazzling example of Modernisme. Located at number 3, Plaça Weyler, it was built in 1903 by the architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner.

The Gran Hotel was the most luxurious hotel in Spain until the opening of the Ritz in 1910. Among the innovations and luxuries were the lift, steam heating and electricity.

Can Forteza Rey

It is particularly reminiscent of Gaudí’s Casa Batlló on Paseo de Gracia in Barcelona. Its promoter was José Forteza-Rey, who worked as a goldsmith at the Cathedral at the same time as Gaudí carried out the renovation (1904-1914).

The history of the building is curious. José Forteza Rey built the building for his children: a pharmacy on the ground floor; the first floor as a dental clinic and the third floor as a private residence, the mezzanine was reserved for housing by the developer himself.

The decorative treatment, the polychrome ceramics of the Majorcan factory “La Roqueta” and the monstrous or rather painful and suffering face, flanked by two winged dragons located on the first floor and above, the dentist’s sign “Clínica Dental I. F. Rey” stand out. F. Rey”, an effective and artistic advertising, associating the evil with the remedy, worthy of the best publicists.

L’Àguila

Adjacent to the Casa Forteza Rey, we find the Águila building. It was built in 1908 by the architect Gaspar Bennàzar, popularly known as “s’Arquitecte”, whose works also include s’Escorxador and the Sagrera promenade.

The building built to house the l’Àguila warehouses is in the process of being converted into an interior hotel.

The plaza Mayor

Very close to the town hall is the Plaza Mayor. There is a local saying that “all roads lead to the Plaza Mayor”, because it is the actual centre of the city of Palma.

The mythical and busy streets of Palma are born from this place: San Miguel, Jaime II, Vía Sindicato, where you can find numerous shops selling traditional and local products and jewellery. On Mondays, Fridays and Saturdays there is a craft market.

History of the Plaza Mayor

Surrounded by 14th century buildings, it was the seat of the Inquisition until its final disappearance in 1823, and was such a gloomy and gloomy place that it was popularly known as the Black House.

Later, the square was turned into a market and after the civil war it became a square, where ponds and flower boxes were built. The square is connected to the Ramblas promenade by a staircase.

In 1969, the City Council approved what the newspapers called the “great reform”, creating a five-storey basement, four for parking and one for a shopping centre.

Sant Miquel Street

If you are interested in what to see in Mallorca, you are also interested in what to buy and where. Calle San Miguel is one of the main shopping streets in the centre of Palma. It is a narrow, elongated street and one of the busiest pedestrian thoroughfares.

It belongs to the most traditional and welcoming shopping area, next to Calle Oms and Las Ramblas. It could be considered an open-air shopping centre, with a multitude of shops, clothing, footwear, accessories, perfumery, souvenirs, fabrics and Mallorcan embroidery.

In San Miguel, local and traditional shops of yesteryear, such as the historic Bordados Valldemossa and the well-known Camper , coexist with big brands such as Desigual and Sfera.

The parish church of Sant Miquel

In the middle of Sant Miquel street is this parish church. Together with Santa Eulàlia, Sant Jaume and Santa Creu, it is one of the four oldest parishes to be seen in Mallorca.

The Olivar Market

After walking through the old town we reach the Olivar market. Markets have become another attraction in the cities and the Mercat de l’Olivar is the largest and most complete municipal market to see in Mallorca.

Aromas, cheeses, colours, flavours and cured meats mingle in this traditional food market with food stalls, flower shops and bars.

History of the Olivar market

In addition to being a landmark monument built in 1951, it is a luminous building of Mediterranean architecture. However, it should not be forgotten that it was formerly the Convent of the Virgin of Olivar.

The “variat” in Mallorca

The “variat”, a combination of Mallorcan dishes in the same plate, is one of the main reasons to visit this market, and is one of its main points of reference.

P laza España

As in other cities, the Plaza de España is characterised by being a nerve centre of Palma’s communications.

Many streets and squares converge here, making it the perfect place to end the Mallorca Free walking Tour and go for lunch in any of the restaurants in the surrounding area. Depending on your tastes, don’t hesitate to ask our guides where to go for a good meal.

Statue of Jaume I

In the Plaza España is the equestrian statue in honour of Jaime I, the Conqueror, inaugurated on 20 January 1927.

It is said that depending on how a horse’s legs are placed, they show the cause of death of the illustrious personage who rides it: four on the ground would mean natural death, one leg raised, he died of wounds or illness, two legs raised, he died in combat.

But it seems that this is just a legend.

Self-guided Walking Tour of Palma

Walking Tour Of Plama

This website uses affiliate links which earn a small commission at no additional cost to you.

Palma is the sole major city in the Balearic Islands and, as the capital, boasts an array of historical sites, landmarks, and cathedrals that reflect its Roman, Moorish, and Christian heritage. The name Palma can be traced back to its Roman origins, although human settlement on this land dates back to the Bronze Age. Over the centuries, Palma transitioned between Arabic and Catholic rule, and today it stands as a tourist-friendly city where modern cafes, hotels, and shops coexist within ancient architectural marvels. When you visit Palma, you can delve into its rich history at numerous sites, museums, and landmarks.

Plaza de España, Palma

Plaza De Espana, Palma

If you are arriving by bus you will start off here, the main terminus.

The Plaza de España or Placa d’Espanya is a beautiful square located in the heart of Mallorca. It provides you with unparalleled scenic views and a relaxed, calm atmosphere. A favourite with locals and visitors, this square is ideal for a walk or just to sit back and take it easy on one of the numerous benches. It features pretty fountains that by night turned into a visual wonder. Eclectic music and vibrant lights give such an effect that the fountains seems to be virtually dancing.

Mercat Olivar

Mercat De L’Olivar

Leave the square at its most southerly exit and turn right down Carrer Convent Caputxins.

Mercat Olivar embodies the essence of a traditional Spanish market on a grand scale. Every day, it welcomes visitors, inviting them to wander through its corridors and purchase fresh food and products directly from the producers. The first floor boasts a wide variety of fresh produce, while the second floor is dedicated entirely to meat and cheese. Along the way, you’ll encounter vendors serving delectable tapas at affordable prices—truly representing the pinnacle of street food quality.

Plaza Mayor

Plaza Mayor, Palma

Leave the market using the west ext onto Plaça de l’Olivar, turn left. Walk along La Casa de Valentina and follow the road as it turns left into Carrer d’En Vilanova. You will pass a small square and the Església de la Mercè – Pares Mercedaris, a Catholic Church, belonging to the Order of Mercy, built at the beginning of the 17th century. Turn right into Carrer de Can Martí Feliu until you reach Plaça del Banc de l’Oli. Leave the square (oval) at its south west exit and walk towards to archway entrance to Plaza Mayor.

Plaça Major serves as the primary square in Palma, characterized by its rectangular layout and framed by traditional yellow buildings adorned with green shutters. Over the centuries, it has remained the vibrant heart of city life.

This square occupies the site where the San Felipe Neri convent once stood and later became the headquarters of the notorious Spanish Inquisition in Mallorca, a role it held until 1823. The present square, as we know it today, took shape during the 19th century, with construction spanning from 1825 into the early 20th century.

The attractive edifices surrounding Plaça Major feature arched colonnades on the ground floor, providing sheltered walkways where shops could showcase their wares. Nowadays, these buildings house a diverse array of cafes, bars, and restaurants, many of which offer terraces that spill out onto the square. Here, street artists and musicians often entertain passers-by.

Plaça Major also hosts a craft market catering to tourists seeking souvenirs. This market operates throughout the year and is especially lively in July, August, September, during Easter, and at Christmas.

Plaza de Cort

Plaza Cort Ayuntamiento (Town Hall) Palma De Mallorca

Leave Plaza Mayor at the large exit in the middle of the south side. Walk down Carrer de Colom until you reach Plaza de Cort.

The delightful and petite Plaza de Cort or Plaça Cort, nestled in the heart of the city, is renowned for its ancient olive tree known as the ‘Olivera de Cort,’ which proudly graces its centre.

The square earned its name ‘Cort’ because it once served as the gathering place for the feudal court. Dominating the plaça is the town hall, a structure crafted between 1649 and 1680 by local architects Pere Bauçá, Miquel Oliver, and Bartomeu Calafat. Its façade is adorned with a blend of Mannerist and Baroque architectural elements.

At the heart of Plaça Cort lies the famous ‘Olivera de Cort,’ a six-hundred-year-old olive tree that was transported to Palma from the Pedruixella Petit estate in Pollença in 1989, symbolizing peace. This remarkable olive tree stands at a height of seven meters and is a popular attraction for visitors, many of whom enjoy searching for intriguing shapes on its trunk, such as an ear referred to as the ‘Orella de Mallorca.’

Around the square, you’ll find several charming bars and cafes, many of which offer inviting terraces that extend across Plaça Cort. Additionally, there’s an ice cream parlor known as Giovanni’s, which is notable for its royal patronage, as they deliver their delectable ice creams to the Spanish Royal House. Treat yourself to one of their ice creams and savor it beneath the shade of the ancient olive tree.

Banys Arabs

Arab Baths Palma-de-mallorca

Leave by the south east exit to Plaça de Santa Eulàlia and the Església de Santa Eulàlia (Church of Santa Eulalia) . Walk down Carrer de Can Fortuny and Carrer del Call. The juction is the locaton of the entrance to the old Jewish Quarter, look for a symbol on the floor. Turn right onto Carrer de Santa Clara and first left. At the junction you can either head directly down Carrer de Can Serra to get to the baths or buy some nougat from the Nuns at the Convent de Santa Clara.

These 10th-century baths are one of the few remaining vestiges of the Arab city of Medina Mayurqa, known today as Palma.

Dating back to a period spanning the 10th to 12th centuries, the Arab Baths were constructed using antique elements and recycled capitals from earlier epochs, including Muslim, Byzantine, and Roman capitals. These baths are seamlessly integrated into the gardens of the former orchard of the Can Fontirroig manor house.

They likely formed part of a nobleman’s residence and are akin to similar structures found in various Islamic cities. The tepidarium, a warm room, features a dome resembling a half orange and is illuminated by 25 circular openings to admit sunlight, supported by around a dozen columns.

One remarkable aspect is the unique character of each column, suggesting that they were salvaged from the remnants of diverse Roman edifices—a testament to early recycling practices. Hammams, such as these, served not only as places for bathing but also as social gathering spots. The courtyard, adorned with cacti, palm trees, and orange trees, would have provided a pleasant area for cooling off after a soothing bath.

Museu de Mallorca

Museo De Mallorca

Continue down Carrer de Can Serra turning right and right again to reach the Museu de Mallorca.

This museum offers a first-hand journey through the history of the island. Housed within a building erected on the grounds of a former 16th-century Baroque palace, it still preserves a significant portion of its original architecture. Within its walls, visitors can explore a wide range of artefacts spanning from prehistoric eras to the 19th century. The museum also boasts a notable collection of ceramics, showcasing various styles and historical periods, including the Modernist creations from the La Roqueta factory.

Jardí del Bisbe

Jardí Del Bisbe Bishop’s Garden, Palma

Walk up C/ de la Portella and turn left and walk down Carrer de Sant Pere Nolasc. The Ornate entance to Jardí del Bisbe is on your left.

The Jardí del Bisbe, or Bishop’s Garden, is situated behind Palma Cathedral, providing an exclusive and refreshing vantage point for viewing the cathedral’s rooftop and the rear façade of the Episcopal Palace. To enter the gardens, visitors pass through an impressive gate constructed in the mannerist style.

Once inside, you’ll encounter a layout reminiscent of the gardens that adorned the “Casals” or mansions of Palma. The design features meticulously trimmed hedges arranged in geometric patterns, an orchard, and a pond known as the “safareig.” During the spring and summer, the pond boasts blooming water lilies, adding color and fragrance to the surroundings.

Museu Diocesa

Museu Diocesa De Mallorca

Leave the Bishops gardens turning left and left again.

This compact museum, housing a collection of religious and historical artifacts, is situated within a section of the former episcopal palace situated discreetly behind the cathedral.

The bishop’s palace, originally constructed in the 13th century, boasts a primarily Gothic architectural style, though it has seen numerous renovations over the centuries, altering its initial appearance.

Within the museum’s exhibits, you’ll find an array of items such as paintings, pulpits, and prayer books. Notable highlights include exquisite Arab tapestries, a diverse collection of ceramics spanning five centuries, and a 17th-century painting depicting baby Jesus carrying a cross. Be sure to keep an eye out for the portrait of St. George (Sant Jordi), set against the backdrop of medieval Palma.

Royal Palace of La Almudaina

Royal Palace Of La Almudaina, Palma

Walk alongside the Cathedral on the aptly named Carrer del Mirador or Street of the view. The entrance to the Royal Palace is in front of you.

The Royal Palace of La Almudaina is located just opposite Palma’s imposing Cathedral ‘La Seu’. It’s elevated position overlooking the Bay of Palma lent it great strategic importance throughout the ages. Today, it’s one of the capital’s main attractions. If you are staying in Palma, it’s a short walk or public bus ride to the palace. There is also ample parking in front of the Cathedral along the Paseo Marítimo. The word ‘Almudaina’ comes from the Arabic for ‘fortress’. However, long before the Moors arrived in the 10th century, the site had already been used by Romans, and even further back, by the Talaiots. When the Christians took possession of the island in the 13th century, the Moorish features were largely demolished. Under King Jaume II, the palace adopted the Levantine Gothic style. Visitors can wander through its numerous rooms, soaking up its history. There are a series of three grand rooms where you may notice the bricked-in Gothic arches cut off in the middle. These rooms, which are furnished with period pieces and tapestries, would have once been double their present height and formed a vast hall.

La Seu (Palma Cathedral)

Palma Cathedral

Turn left out of the palace and right along the north side of the Cathedral.

The monumental La Seu cathedral is an immense structure situated by the sea, and its construction spanned several centuries. Its origins trace back to around 1230, at the command of King Jaume I of Mallorca, following the conclusion of the lengthy Moorish rule over the Mediterranean island. This grand church was erected on the site of an ancient mosque. The construction process endured for over 350 years, culminating in the completion of the nave and the main entrance in 1601.

Upon closer inspection, the colossal dimensions of La Seu cathedral become apparent. The building spans nearly 110 meters in length and boasts a width of 33 meters. Its nave reaches a towering height of 44 meters, ranking among the largest of its kind in Europe. One of the cathedral’s remarkable features is the Gothic rosette window on its eastern facade. With a diameter of 12.55 meters, this window comprises over 1,200 vibrant stained glass fragments. When the sunlight filters through, it conjures mesmerizing kaleidoscopic patterns within the interior, captivating all who behold it.

Palau March

Palau Marche Palma

Leaving the Cathedral head back to the Palace and turn right to get to Palau March.

Situated within the Palau March, a residence constructed between 1939 and 1945 for Majorcan banker Juan March Ordinas (1880-1962) in Palma, this museum is a splendid testament to architectural and historical elegance. The project was skillfully crafted by architect Luis Gutierrez Soto of Madrid, incorporating a historical design language enriched by influences from Majorcan and Italian baroque palaces.

Notable features of the Palau March Museum encompass the grand courtyard of honor and its meticulously adorned façade. The latter showcases intricate ornamentation and an open gallery, now transformed into the museum’s cafeteria, which serves as an outstanding vantage point offering panoramic views of the heart of Palma.

S'Hort del Rei (Royal Garden), Palma

S’Hort Del Rei Royal Garden, Palma

Walk down the steps of beside the Palace which you will walk anticlockwise around.

The gardens, originally dating back to the medieval era, were once an integral part of the Royal Palace Almudaina. These lush grounds were adorned with fruit trees, vegetables, medicinal plants, and ornamental flora, which is why they were often referred to as the orchard of the Royal Palace or the king’s orchard. These gardens were encompassed by a lofty wall, and the Cavalry guarded the area on the seaside and northern fronts, with a gardener’s residence present.

In 1834, the wall surrounding the garden was replaced with a wooden fence, which, in turn, was substituted with an iron fence in 1882. However, as the early 20th century dawned, the orchard gradually disappeared, making way for the construction of the Lyric theatre (1902), La Alhambra (1918), and other structures like a barber shop, a photography shop, a bike shop, and more.

It wasn’t until the latter half of the 20th century that a decision was made to undertake a revitalization project in the heart of Palma, aimed at preserving the city’s historic sections and architectural heritage. Beginning in 1966, efforts commenced to dismantle the buildings occupying the site of the Royal gardens and to restore the gardens themselves.

Lonja, Palma De Mallorca, España

Cross over Av. d’Antoni Maura and walk along the Passeig de sagrera until you reach the Palm trees of Plaza La Lonja.

With its twin turrets and a guardian angel gracing the entrance, this 15th-century waterfront edifice bears the appearance of being part-castle and part-church. However, it is, in fact, neither.

Designed by Guillem Sagrera, the same architect responsible for the cathedral’s Portal del Mirador, this building served as the city’s exchange during Mallorca’s heyday as a major maritime trading hub in the 15th century.

As the tides of trade ebbed over the centuries, Palma’s commercial significance waned, prompting the building to adapt to changing needs. It served as a storage facility for goods and weaponry during the War of Independence and transformed into a fine art gallery in the late 19th century.

The rectangular hall features octagonal towers at each corner, complemented by ten smaller towers functioning as buttresses. Standing amidst the spiraling pillars, gazing upward at the ribbed vaults, one can attempt to envision the Mallorcan merchants from 500 years ago engaging in negotiations over silk, spices, and silver.

Today, La Llotja serves as a cultural center, hosting temporary exhibitions and fostering a vibrant artistic atmosphere.

Passeig del Born

Passeig Del Born

Walk along Carrer de Sant Joan and turn second right into Carrer dels Apuntadors. The roundabout at the end is called Plaça la Reina, or square of the Queen. Turn left to walk along Paseo del Borne.

Paseo del Borne, known as ‘Passeig des Born’ in Catalan, stands out as arguably the most refined avenue in Palma. Not surprisingly, it has become a magnet for luxury brands like Rolex, Louis Vuitton, Carolina Herrera, and Sandro, earning it the nickname of the “Golden Mile.”

This avenue seamlessly channels the flow of traffic from two bustling thoroughfares, Avenida Jaime III and Carrer de la Unió, which leads to Las Ramblas. Despite this constant stream of activity, the broad promenade somehow manages to retain a sense of tranquility amid the hustle and bustle.

Along the pedestrianized section, you’ll find restaurants and cafés with inviting terraces, perfect for indulging in some people-watching. Numerous stone benches line the avenue, encouraging visitors to pause and immerse themselves in the vibrant atmosphere of the city’s pulsating heart.

Tall trees generously provide shade during the summer months, while in winter, their trunks come alive with sparkling Christmas lights. Paseo del Borne is flanked by two charming squares, Plaça Joan Carles and Plaça de la Reina, adding to the overall allure of this captivating promenade.

Can Casasayas

Can Casasayas, Palma

Walk along Carrer de Jovellanos and turn left into Carrer dels Paraires until you reach Plaça del Mercat.

The Casasayas building and the Pensión Menorquina are exemplary structures showcasing the Modernist ‘art nouveau’ style, distinguished by their original symmetry and dynamic design. These two buildings, identical in execution and symmetrically positioned with Calle de Santacília between them, rank among the most significant and distinctive edifices in Palma.

Commissioned by Josep Casasayas Casajuana, the proprietor of the Can Frasquet pastry shop, these buildings were designed by Francesc Roca, who supervised the initial phase of construction. Completion of the project was overseen by Guillem Reynés.

The ground floors emphasize structural elements, prominently featuring metal columns. As you ascend to the upper levels, you’ll be captivated by the undulating designs and finishes that infuse the facades with remarkable dynamism and plasticity. The balconies showcase intricate metalwork, and the windows exhibit exquisite wooden craftsmanship, contributing to the overall effect. The openings assume various forms, including parabolic arches, marking the pronounced plastic and dynamic treatment characteristic of the Modernist ‘art nouveau’ movement. While decorative elements are not overly abundant, you can spot elegant representations of ferns, acanthus leaves, and butterflies, particularly adorning the iron capitals and wrought-iron details of the balconies.

Juan March Foundation Museum

Majorque Palma Vers Placa Major Museu Fundación Juan March

Turn to the right and walk along Carrer Unió taking the steps to reach Plaza Mayor. Leave by the north exit and walk along Carrer de Sant Miquel.

The Museu Fundación Juan March is housed in a building that originally served as a private residence, with its origins dating back to the 17th century. However, in the early 20th century, it underwent a significant renovation overseen by architect Guillem Reynés i Font. Since 1990, this historical structure has been the home to a portion of the art collection belonging to the Fundación Juan March.

Continue along Carrer de Sant Miquel until you return to Plaça d’Espanya.
