One of the most memorable memories that we made in the Mile High City was the excursion to the nearby Two Mile High Country. This review shares our four star experience on the Gray Line Rocky Mountain National Park tour. It was a tour where $125 paid for a million dollar experience. The duration of the tour was ten hours of my life that added at least a year to my life. When it comes to seeing Rocky Mountain National Park this tour literally rises above it all in height. We would reach a height of 12,183 feet above sea love. The tour uses the Grand Circle route of seeing the park. From Denver, we ascended Interstate 70 westbound into the Rocky Mountains. We followed US 40 northbound over the Continental Divide where a right turn onto US 34 brought us into the park. Trail Ridge Road led us to the high summits in Rocky Mountain National Park. We exited the park at the Fall River Visitor Center where US 34 and 36 brought us through Boulder then ultimately southwest into Denver. The adventure began at 8:30 when the tour bus picked us up near the hotel. It would stop at a couple of more hotels before taking us to the ticket center in the Cherry Creek Mall. After paying the $125 we returned to the bus. Normally I am close-dephobic on a bus. This luxury bus was anything but uncomfortable. It felt like I was in a first-class airplane. The bus even had a restroom. Exploring the Colorado countryside from the luxury bus benefitted the experience. Darcy controlled the bus and the tour. He is a knowledgeable tour guide and safe driver. His narrative told the story of the rolling Aspin forests, mountain summits, ski lounge hamlets alongside US 40, and landscapes with the pages of the tour. Using the analogy that the tour is a book each stop was the start of the chapter. Here are the stops, the chapters of the tour in chronological order: *Downieville Truck Stop off I-70: Home of the 5 Cent coffee and a hydration/ snack stop. *Berthold Pass: Where US 40 transverses the Continental Divide. *Shadow Mountain Lake: One of the northernmost Colorado River reservoirs. *Buffet lunch in the Grand Lake Lounge. *Photo spot at the Rocky Mountain National Park sign. *Fairview Curve (in the park): Overlooks near the headwaters of the Colorado River. *Millner Pass (in the park): Where Trail Ridge Road crosses the Continental Divide. *Alpine Visitor Center (45 minutes): The Alpine Ridge Trail reaches the 11,796 feet high tundra. *Lava Cliffs (in the park) *Rainbow Curve (in the park) *Fall River Visitor Center: In Estes Park. *Bonus stop: A photo opportunity of an elk grazing near the Fall River Visitor Center. In the near future, I will be reviewing some of these stops where I spent time. These reviews will provide deeper insight with pictures. In regards to this review proper, I appreciated that Darcy made the additional stops when he spotted the elk, moose, and big horn sheep. I further appreciated when he took the time to hand us the park maps when we entered the national park. It is important to bring up a couple of other things. The tour included the park admission. And the buffet lunch was unexpectedly good. The tour concluded with Darcy dropping us off at our hotel around 6:30 pm. He had been our tour guide for a ten hour tour that added at least a year to my life.

Did The Rocky Mountain National Park Tour. Prearranged Downtown Denver hotel pick up and drop off. Call to verify. Darcy, our driver for the tour itself, was a font of information, full of dry humor. Could not have asked for a better driver. Very competent behind the wheel (I guess over 30 years of military service gives you a cool, competent temperament). He made some unscheduled stops when he noticed wildlife, so the group could get some cool pics. Lunch was included, buffet style at a resort just outside Rocky Mountain National Park. Very tasty. All in all, well worth the $120 per person price tag.

We were hopeful that this tour would be exciting and show us some great stuff around Denver, well that didn't happen! Not even a stop at a dispensary would have helped. For starters we were picked up near Union Station. We were told to be there at 1:00pm. The bus arrived around 1:15. I am okay with it begin late because of traffic. No big deal. We hop on the bus and are told we have to go and pick up a few more guests. The bus drives to the location, (about 20 minutes away), picks up the guests, then goes to another location near a mall. We are then told we all need to have our tickets validated inside this building. So we leave the bus, get our tickets validated, and then the tour finally starts....it is 2:35 now. Seriously. It is also 2018. I have been on plenty of tours and have never seen this. I think they need to take a page out of NYC's "Hop on Hop Off" Tours where the bus driver and the assistant scan your purchased ticket (which we already did) and take out the extra time to have tickets validated and all that other ridiculous stuff. We indulged about 45 minutes of the tour, nothing really exciting or amazing, before we got off at the State House and took an Uber back to the hotel. The bus driver was a nice person, friendly. Nothing against her. How the tour is organized though is crap!

Photo of Alex S.

A Grayline employee named Max ruined my Grayline tour called "Denver Highlights" on June 2nd, 2017. I pre-paid for two tickets for my friend and myself, and we went to the Cherry Creek shopping mall to get checked in by Max before we boarded the tour bus. Max showed up 20 minutes late and kept the entire tour waiting to board the bus. When I showed Max my digital ticket on my iPad, I politely asked him if the digital ticket showed that I paid for two people. He's a large man around 6'4" tall, and he leaned forward hostilely with an annoyed look on his face, and replied in a sarcastic, insulting tone, "Let's see, your ticket here says two people so I guess that indicates that you have a ticket for TWO PEOPLE, SO DO YOU UNDERSTAND THAT???" My friend and I were completely shocked at this attack, so I immediately spoke to the tour bus driver named Autumn who apologized and instructed me to contact their boss Ryan Murphy to tell him what happened. Autumn said, "That's a shame because we've had problems with Max in the past, and he can unfortunately be like that." So I left their boss Ryan a voicemail explaining this ugly incident but haven't heard back from him. I was planning to take their mountain tour the next day but decided against it after this terrible encounter. As an ethnic minority of small stature, I'm left to wonder if Max's rudeness was due to racial bias, or perhaps he just saw me as an easy target to try and bully since he is so much taller than I am. Anyone visiting Denver, especially travelers from foreign countries, should avoid Grayline tours. It ruined the day for me and my friend.

Against my wishes, I was forced to take a city tour of Denver. I wanted to do something more exciting, even if it was taking a tour up to one of the mountains, but alas, I lost that fight. We spent FOREVER trying to find the front-desk of Gray Line Tours in the Cherry Creek Mall. The lady who gave us instructions (TWICE) failed miserably, and we were lost until we accidentally stumbled upon it. If you're a tour bus company, based out of a huge mall that is probably unfamiliar to most tourists, you need to have better signs, instructions, or something. It was completely unacceptable. Our tour guide was alright. He wasn't funny and he seemed to just be going with the motions, which is really freakin' lame. He didn't know the answers to some of the questions people asked, which is another disappointment. If you're going to represent your city, then do a good job at it. If not, get another. The tour itself was really boring. So boring, I fell asleep during some of it. The best part was when we stopped for about 20 minutes - we were able to get some really delicious lunch. Other than that, this was definitely a waste of money.

Photo of Gary P.

This was a three hour tour that started at 1:15. We were driven to Cherry Creek where at 1:45 we got off the bus to register and the bus was to leave at 2:00. They waited for a couple who showed up at 2:15. After a short tour and drop at a park for pics, we were taken to the state caption bldg. where at 3:20 we were told the bus would leave at 4:00! Keep in mind this is Saturday and the bldg is closed. We were taken to a downtown bldg for pics and returned to Union Station. A complete waste of time!

My girlfriend and I took a trip to Denver on 8/4/16. We decided on a gray line tour of the Rocky Mountains. We had David as our driver and Mark as the tour guide. Both were great. The tour covered miles of beautiful Colorado. Had a great buffet lunch overlooking Grand Lake. The tour made timely stops for restroom breaks, plus there is a restroom on the bus. We loved it and would definitely use them again. Dress warm, it is very cold at 12,000 feet and rained a bit.

I will give them negative stars if it was possible. My hotel made the reservation, I got the confirmation and I got charged TWICE. The day of the tour they denied ever doing any of these. SO NO TOUR FOR ME , BUT ALL THE TIME SPENT TRYING TO SOLVE THE PROBLEMS WITH THEM, and WITH MY CREDIT CARD COMPANY

We were visiting Denver and decided to take a tour with The Gray line bus. The bus is big, has AC, tinted windows and comfortable seats. I do not remember the name of our tour guide but his description matches the review below. He was nice, friendly and knowledgeable. He got to know everyone on the bus and made the tour enjoyable. We saw the magnificent Red Rocks at Rocky Mountain National Park and Amphitheater. The bus stopped at the park for a while and we got a chance to take pics and indulge in the beauty of nature. We also toured Buffalo Bill Cody Museum and stopped at a restaurant there for lunch. Museum was small but informative on the life and career of Buffalo Bill. All in all we had a wonderful time.

Do not know what really happened with the first Yelper here but my experience with Grayline Tours in Denver was very positive. I also had Darcy as the driver and he was perfectly fine. It is true that Darcy is an older gentleman but he was an excellent tour guide, a gentleman and very intelligent too. I went on the Rocky Mountain National Park Tour with Grayline and I felt very safe with Darcy's driving. He has lived in the area for some time and knew his way around. I loved stopping at the Red Rocks Amphitheater and checking out this awesome venue. Going through Bear Creek Canyon and the beautiful city of Evergreen, CO. was fabulous. But my favorite stop was at the Buffalo Bill Cody Grave and Museum. I paid my respects to this great Wild West figure and enjoyed my first taste of bison in the small cafe next door. I remember standing there where Buffalo Bill & his wife are buried on Lookout Mountain and I could hear the wind whistling through the pine trees, I could see all around--in every direction. It was a glorious experience and I understood then why Buffalo Bill insisted he be buried atop that mountain and not in Cody, Wyoming--which was named for him! I feel bad that the first Yelper here seemed to have had such a bad experience but I assure you that it must have been an anomaly. I would encourage Denver visitors to get out of the city and see some of the exquisite beauty that awaits them in the Rocky Mountain Parks and learn interesting history about Denver on the City Tours.

Organized Tours in Denver

Visitors who want to be personally guided to the attractions of Denver and the surrounding areas by those in the know have a variety of choices.

Half- and full-day bus tours of Denver and the nearby Rockies are offered by the ubiquitous Gray Line, P.O. Box 17646, Denver, CO 80217 (tel. 800/348-6877 or 303/289-2841; www.grayline.com). Fares for children 12 and under are half the adult prices listed below. Prices include entry fees but usually no food. Tours depart from the Cherry Creek Shopping Center at 1st Avenue and Milwaukee Street, as well as from local hotels and hostels on a reservation basis.

A 4-hour tour (no. 27), leaving at 8:30am, takes in Denver’s mountain parks: Red Rocks Park, Bergen Park, and Buffalo Bill’s grave atop Lookout Mountain. It costs $45 for adults. The 3 1/2-hour Denver city tour (no. 28), which departs daily at 8:30am and 1:30pm, gives you a taste of both old Denver--through Larimer Square and other historic buildings--and the modern-day city. It’s $35 for adults. The city tour combined with the mountain-parks tour costs $75. Gray Line also offers tours of Rocky Mountain National Park, Golden and Morrison, and the Colorado Springs area; call or check the website for information.

Banjo Billy’s Bus Tours ([tel] 720/938-8885; www.banjobilly.com) offers 90-minute tours in a funky bus (complete with couches and a disco ball) covering all sorts of nooks and crannies of Denver history, especially the most bizarre ones. Tickets are $22 adults, $20 seniors, $14 children 6 to 12, and free for children under 6. Summer tours depart the Colorado Convention Center at 14th and California sts. Tuesday to Sunday at 1pm and 3pm, and less frequently at other times of year. There is also an adults-only brewery tour ($40).

The LoDo District (tel. 303/628-5428; www.lodo.org) leads guided walking tours of the storied area June to October. Tours depart from Union Station (17th and Wynkoop sts.) on Wednesdays at 2 and 4pm; the cost is $10 adults, $5 students, and free for those 12 and under. They also offer adults-only tours focusing on the seamy side of the city's history on Saturday afternoons for $20. Take advantage of your cellphone with Rocky Mountain Audio Guides (tel. 303/898-7073; www.rmaguides.com), which delivers 40- and 80-minute walking tours of downtown Denver. Call 24 hours before your tour to purchase ($15–$25); then you simply dial a number and walk around town, guided via satellite.

Bicycling & Multisport Tours

The World Outdoors (tel. 800/488-8483 or 303/413-0938; www.theworldoutdoors.com) offers a 6-day, 5-night multisport hut-to-hut tour that begins and ends in Vail (100 miles west of Denver). The huts, which are pretty plush for backcountry accommodations, serve as recreational headquarters for guests, who have plenty of hiking, rafting, and sightseeing opportunities between mountain-biking treks. The trips aren’t cheap, costing around $1,500 per person, but this is a great way for the outdoors enthusiast to enjoy the Rockies west of Denver. Available in June and August, tours include meals but not biking and camping gear.

Colorado Mountain Expeditions (tel. 888/263-4453 or 970/759-8737; www.coloradotrailhiking.com) offers supported weeklong treks on the Colorado Trail (which runs 483 miles from Denver to Durango) for $925 per person, all meals included. The beauty of these trips: You only carry a day pack for 10 to 20 miles each day. A support crew sets up your camp and makes your meals while you focus on the trail, not the campsite.

Another company that offers weeklong tours in the area is Bicycle Tour of Colorado (tel. 303/985-1180; www.bicycletourcolorado.com). For $350 to $400, a biker can join a tour involving about 1,500 riders and 70 volunteers--including medical and bike-tech support as well as guiding services--on a 400-mile journey that hits six different cities each year, crossing the Continental Divide several times in the process. Although accommodations can be prearranged at hotels, most riders elect to stay at facilities provided by the city (for example, the local high school). All meals are provided for the one fee for the week.

Walk2Connect ([tel] 303/908-0076; www.walk2connect.com) is the place to go for informative and invigorating walking tours around the city for $25 to $55 per person. Some tours include lunch.

Bikalope Tours ([tel] 800/979-3370; www.bikalope.com) will take visitors on 9-mile bike tours of downtown and vicinity for $50 per person, bike included.

While many tours may rush you to and from your destination, Gray Line Tours — which has a 42-year history of showing visitors the beauty of Colorado — makes your Pikes Peak tour a leisurely adventure. During the tour’s four-hour span, you’ll make frequent stops at locations such as Crystal Reservoir, historic Glen Cove, the coveted summit of Pikes Peak and many other points of interest. Not only do these stops allow you lots of opportunities to snap shots of the amazing scenery, they also help you adapt to the altitude in a way that zipping straight to the top will not. Wide windows allow for maximum oohing and aahing when you’re in the tour bus, ensuring you won’t miss a minute of the sights that abound on Pikes Peak.

No tour of Pikes Peak is complete without a great guide, and the drivers and tour guides at Gray Line strike the perfect balance of knowledge, friendliness and humor that is anything but stuffy or boring. It’s more like a casual conversation between friends — which is exactly how it should be! By the time you’ve finished the journey, you’ll know everything about the flora and fauna of the Pikes Peak region, from the pines and columbines, to the big horn sheep and yellow-bellied marmots. You’ll also learn about the geology of the mountain and its history.

You’ll be able to focus on the sights and sounds stress-free because Gray Line drivers are second to none, with safety as their primary focus at all times. In short, their drivers know the Pikes Peak Highway like it’s the road home and they’ll make you feel safe and secure throughout the journey.

Once you hit the top of Pikes Peak, you’ll be able to explore the summit for 30-40 minutes. Take photos, peek over the rocks and edges and make a stop in the Summit Visitor Center. Your trip back to the  Pikes Peak Tour by Gray Line basecamp in downtown Colorado Springs will be just as relaxing and filled with beautiful sights as your trip up the Pikes Peak Highway.
