Gibraltar Tour

Making a Gibraltar tour in one day from Marbella is simple and fun. Located only 45 minutes from Marbella the whole family will enjoy the sights and sounds of this famous rock.

Gibraltar can be seen from the Marbella coastline and on a clear day it´s impressive. However, as you get closer to this peninsula you are even more amazed at the size and grandeur of this limestone rock called Gibraltar. Although technically a peninsula, many people see Gibraltar as an island.  It is unique in that it signals the position of the Strait of Gibraltar, the narrow neck which separates Europe from Africa, and yet provides the only link between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. A sandy isthmus connects Gibraltar to Spain. There are also ferries to Morocco and flights to London from there. After repeated conquests and sieges, Gibraltar has been claimed a British Territory since 1704. Many tourists flock from the Costa del Sol to Gibraltar as it is very close and can make for a fun Marbella one day trip out with the family.

Our suggestions for a Gibraltar Tour

How to get there: From Marbella take the main highway N 340 towards Algeciras. Continue straight and look out for signs as you pass Sotogrande. Exit at the Gibraltar (La Linea) turnoff and head towards the sea. You may either enter with your car or park in a parking lot in La Linea and walk across. Don´t forget your passports!

Important facts:

• If your ID card is a valid EU travel document for travel within in the EU, then you CAN enter Gibraltar using that. Gibraltar is part of the EU. Passports are needed to enter Spain and Morocco.
• • Legal tender is pound sterling and Gibraltar pounds.
• • Gibraltar is on central European time (no time change from Marbella)
• • Driving is on the right hand side of the road
• • Electrical power and sockets are the same as those in the UK
• • Shops open 9:00am - 7:30pm during weekdays and half days on Saturdays. Most are closed on Sundays.

Getting around: There are several ways to get around Gibraltar. Your hotel may provide a Gibraltar tour from Marbella and this often provides good value, however you are stuck moving at the same pace as a huge group. If you choose to take your own car you can get around on your own, however it is prohibited to take your own car up to the Nature Reserve which is one of the most exciting attractions that Gibraltar has to offer. We suggest you take either a coach trip or a taxi Gibraltar tour as you will find your driver has loads of information and tips about Gibraltar that you wouldn not have otherwise if you were visiting on your own.

Coach trips of a Gibraltar tour can be booked in advance and will take you all around the island. They cost around £15 per person, however you are limited to a certain amount of time. Be sure to ask how long your tour will be and which sites you will be visiting.

Taxi tours are much more personal and gives you a chance to explore at your own pace. A Gibraltar tour cost approximately £14 per person and includes entrance to caves and tunnels.

You may also visit the top of the rock of Gibraltar by cable car for only £7 return and £6 for one-way, however this does not include any entrance fees and you will have to do a lot of walking. (20 min. walk to the caves and 1 hour walk to the tunnels).

Invest in Gibraltar Gibraltar is a wonderful place to visit while you're in Spain, but t here are also so many great reasons and benefits to living in Gibraltar. Barbary Macaques  One of the most famous things about Gibraltar is the Barbary Macaques. Descended from North African populations of Barbary Macaques, these little guys are the only primates within the whole of Europe that have the luxury of being able to roam around freely. Although, legend has it that if they go to far, and find themselves outside of Gibraltar, then Gibraltar will cease to be British…so whatever you do, don’t try and keep one as a pet! This is a great activity for the whole family, especially if you have little ones, and is located in the upper part of the rock. But remember, these are wild animals so always be weary that they might bite. 

 Tax Free shopping  Gibraltar is an absolute haven for any shopaholics out there! The best place to go is Main Street, the centre of Gibraltar’s shopping district, where there are many shops to grab a real bargain. A massive addition benefit of shopping in Gibraltar is that there is no VAT, meaning that anything you buy here will be cheaper than anywhere else. On top of that, if you are visiting from the United Kingdom, you will be able to use your pounds sterling, so there are no costly currency conversions! You will find a mixture of shops down Main Street, to small souvenir shops where you can buy a monkey (not a real one), to big brands you would recognise from the English high street, including Marks and Spencer and Topshop. 

Rock Tour  Gibraltar has to offer many different rock tours, which enable you to see some of the best things it has to offer in one go. There are tours on coaches and also walking tours, however, due to the various locations of attractions most people opt for a coach tour. Prices and durations do vary, depending on what you want to see and how much you are willing to pay, but without a doubt, if you want to see as much of Gibraltar as you can, this is the best way to do it

The Great Siege tunnels  These tunnels were excavated during WWII when Britain was at war with Germany and Italy in 1940. In 2005, these tunnels were opened to the public and act as a testament to both civilians and soldiers who lived and worked in them during some of the hardest days of the Second World War. The tunnels make up a 32-mile network, and you can join one of the many daily tours to travel back in time and follow in the footsteps of some of the greatest people in British History. 

 Dolphin Trip  Many different species of Dolphins can be found around the coasts of Gibraltar and there surely is no better way to see them than taking a boat trip out onto the Mediterranean. There are many different companies that offer these trips, you may want to try  The Original Dolphin Safari  at Marina Bay. Remember, if you’re going in the height of summer is may be busy and be sure to take sun cream!

history and heritage of Gibraltar

Around 200 million years ago, there was a great upheaval of the Earth that caused the shape of Gibraltar as we see it today. The top ridge is made out of compressed seashells, which were once at the bottom of the Ocean, whilst the rest of the Rock is made from Jurassic limestone. 

Due to the natural cracks in the rock, overtime rainwater filtered through and began to create huge caverns, such as St. Michael’s Cave, which is a major tourist destination today. These caverns became very attractive accommodations for prehistoric people, who lived here up to 120 thousand years ago. 

However, it wasn’t until much later in 711 AD that the Rock became a settlement for the first time. The Moslem general, Tarik ibn Ziyad, landed his forces at the southern end of the Roack and began the initial muslim conquest of Spain. He named the Rock “Jebel Tarik”, meaning the “Mountain of Tarik” from which the name “Gibraltar” can be derived. 

Gibraltar remained in the possession of the Moors for 400 years, from the 11th to the 15th Century, in which time they made it their fortress and began to build, which explains the architectural style that is still prevalent in some parts today. However, in 1309, there was the first siege, in which the Spanish took possession, however this was not to be the end of the battle. Another ten sieges took place within the next 24 years, by which time much of the Moorish and Spanish architecture had been destroyed. In 1333, the Moors regained control by the end of one of the bloodiest sieges to date that had last 18 weeks. The Rock remained in Moorish control until 1462, when the Duke of Medina Sidondia of Spain recaptured it once again and returned it to the Spanish. Then in 1704, Sir George Rooke of Canterbury took control, with the help of 1800 Dutch and English Marines. The Spanish then gave it up, to the English under the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713. 

However, this was still not the end of the battle for the Rock. In 1779, the 14th and final siege took place, also known as the American War of Independence, in which the Spanish and French forces joined together in attempt to recapture this territory.  The British forces were strong enough to defend the opposition’s many attempts and the Rock remained in British control. 

As bigger issues, such as the war against Napoleon began to arise, the fortifications at the frontier, connecting Spain and Gibraltar were demolished, allowing free access across the boarded, and enabling Britain and Spain to form as allies.  This free movement began to let the two communities live in peace together, and in 1830, Gibraltar was declared a British Crown Colony, and later in 1950, Gibraltar’s first Legislative Council was opened, allowing Gibraltarians to vote for their national association. The results of the first referendum showed that there was an overwhelming desire to stay associated with Britain. This displeased the leader of Spain, Franco, who decided to close the Frontier in 1969 as an attempt to claim Gibraltar, although this was to no avail, and the Frontier began to reopen in 1982. 

Today, Gibraltar is in the possession of Britain, with over 98.9% of Gibraltarians voting to remain British, as shown by a referendum held in 2002. To go there today, you will see many iconic symbols of Britain, such as the red post boxes, telephone boxes and of course, Marks and Spencer. It is a small place filled with an extensive history, and you should really go and have a look for yourself.

Son's evaluation: A Gibraltar tour is an interesting one day trip and you have lots of fun. I really like going to the supermarkets because they have a lot of cool food and candy to buy which you can't get in marbella. Seeing the monkeys is fun. Grade: 8.0

Daughter's evaluation: I had a great time in Gibraltar. I didn't really enjoy the long car ride to get there, but it was worth it. We took a mini van to go up a mountain to see the monkeys at the top. On the way we passed this really nice cemetery with lots of different tombstones. The monkeys scared me a bit because they are wild animals that could jump on you, so thats why I don't like visiting the monkeys too much. If you bring food with you when seeing the monkeys you will have to put it away so they don't steal it. The restaurants in Gibraltar were pretty good. There are different restaurants with different foods. There is one dessert that was very good that most restaurants should have called banoffee pie. The weather in Gibraltar is quite nice but if you go in summer it can get really hot. There are lots of shops where you can get English products that you can't get in San Pedro. One of these shops we like is called Morissons. Grade: 8.0

Mom's evaluation: We had a great time taking a Gibraltar tour with the kids. We decided to go on a whim as the kids were asking for all these unique English products that their friends from school would bring from the UK. Our mission was to go to Morrison´s supermarket to buy things like string cheese and fruit winders. We left early as to get a head start and do a bit of touring before we hit the market. We spent a fabulous day visiting the city and taking a Gibraltar tour via coach trip. We stumbled upon a stand by the cemetery where there was a mini van waiting to pick up tourists. We agreed on a price and waited for a few others to join us. We heard about the monkeys in Gibraltar and this was the way to see them. We first took a pit stop at the Pillars of Hercules where we got out to take some pictures of the spectacular view. We then carried on towards the top where we got to the monkeys. My daughter freaked out when she saw them and didn´t want to get out of the car. We eventually coaxed her out and took some photos. Be careful not to have any food nearby as there was a tourist who had a candy bar hanging out of the side pocket of his backpack and a monkey just came up to him and took it out. This not only can scare you, but it´s not good for the monkeys to eat chocolate or snacks that we humans normally eat. Our Gibraltar tour continued on to St. Michael´s cave with its beautiful rock formations of stalactites. It was nicely lit to give an interesting effect. This also kind of freaked out my daughter who was 7 at the time, however my 9 year-old son liked it. My kids had a ball running through the Great Siege Tunnels, which through mannequins,props and voice overs gives you the impression of what things were like during the Great Siege of 1779 which lasted till 1783. We managed to squeeze in some time to visit the Gibraltar Museum, have fish and chips for lunch and do a bit of shopping on Main Street.

The kids thought it was so funny to see double-decker buses and bright red English telephone booths all about. They enjoyed our visit to the candy store and Marks & Spencer. The highlight for them, however, was the shopping at Morisson´s picking out all sorts of goodies that we don´t normally find in Marbella. There can be big queues getting in and out of Gibraltar which can take up to three hours, so avoid peak times entering and exiting the frontier. If you do encounter a big line you may park at the parking area located just in front of the frontier and walk across. There is lots of transportation available once you cross. It´s an excellent opportunity to get the kids on a double-decker bus if they´ve never been on one before. All in all we had a great time and felt like we just stepped out of Spain for the day. However, personally if you´re here to visit Spain, I wouldn´t put a Gibraltar tour at the top of the list of things to see and do in Marbella, unless you´re like my father who always wished to go to the Rock one day just to say he´s been there. If you´ve only got a day or two extra to see sights outside of Marbella I´d sooner go to Granada or Seville. There are only so many things to do in Marbella, and in my opinion, taking day trips is always a good idea. In this article I will explore the Marbella to Gibraltar day trip, which I’ve personally taken. You may wonder, is it worth it? Let’s see:

There are several daily buses run by Avanza which connect Marbella bus station with La Linea – the Spanish city at the border with Gibraltar. It’s good to note that you won’t be able to enter Gibraltar by public transport, you will have to cross the border by foot. The bus takes approximately one hour and 15 minutes between Marbella and La Linea. The prices start at 8 euros, and you can book them online by clicking here. The first bus starts at 7:30 in the morning, and arrives in La Linea at 8:45.

If you are hiring your car during your trip to Marbella, then getting to Gibraltar is very easy. The drive from Marbella to Gibraltar is approximately 75 kilometres and takes just over one hour, depending on the traffic and the route you choose. The fastest route is on AP-7, which is a toll road. The A7 motorway is free, but there are a lot of roundabouts and the speed limit varies, so the travel time will be longer.

I highly recommend leaving the car in La Linea, just before the border crossing. Gibraltar is very small and the parking spaces are limited and expensive. The closest car park to the border crossing is Santa Barbara, which is the most expensive as well, at 18 euros/day. Just a bit further away, behind the McDonalds, you will find La Línea – Centro car park which charges only 3 euros per day. This car park is a 15 minutes walk away from the border crossing.

For a hassle-free and guided experience, consider joining an organised tour. Many tour operators offer day trips from Marbella to Gibraltar, providing transportation, a guide, and sometimes even additional activities. This is an excellent choice if you want to make the most of your time and learn more about the region’s history and culture. However, keep in mind that if you opt for a tour you most likely won’t have much free time in Gibraltar to explore by yourself, as the schedule will be set by the organisers. What to Do in Gibraltar During A Day Trip From Marbella?

Below I will give you a sample itinerary on how to spend your time in Gibraltar, on a day trip from Marbella. The Rock and the attractions on it will take approximately three hours to complete.

Cross the Runway

The first attraction on the day trip from Marbella to Gibraltar comes right after the border crossing. The Gibraltar International Airport is one of the few airports in the world with a runway that intersects a main road. As you exit the passport control, you’ll find yourself in front of the runway.

When a plane is about to land or take off, a safety protocol is put into action, and the barriers are automatically closed to stop any movement across the runway. As you wait for the barriers to open, you’ll have a front-row seat to witness planes descend or ascend just metres away from you.

Learn About the History of the Rock

The Rock of Gibraltar has a rich and complicated history, dating back to ancient times when it was inhabited by primitive humans and Neanderthals. However, it was the Moors of Tariq ibn Ziyad who first settled the Rock in 711 AD. Over the centuries, its strategic position guarding the entrance to the Mediterranean made it a coveted prize, leading to numerous battles for possession between Spain, France, and Britain.

One of the most defining periods in Gibraltar’s history was the Great Siege of 1779-1783. Under the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713, Gibraltar was officially ceded to Britain, and subsequent treaties, such as the Treaty of Paris in 1763 and the Treaty of Versailles in 1783, reaffirmed Britain’s control over the Rock. However, the Spanish planned a fierce attack from both sea and land, preceded by heavy bombardment. The Gibraltarians endured great suffering due to food shortages, but they were led by the valiant General Eliott, who exemplified resilience and leadership.

During the Great Siege, Lieutenant Koehler found a solution to fire cannons from the high cliffs of the Rock onto the besieging forces. Another lieutenant, Shrapnel, developed the ammunition that still bears his name today. The numerous tunnels that riddle the Rock are a testament to the ingenuity and engineering prowess of the time. Sergeant-Major Ince was responsible for constructing these tunnels, which allowed the guns to bear down onto the Mediterranean shore, proving invaluable during the Great Siege. These same tunnels were later utilised during World War II, serving as gun emplacements for the Allied Forces.

Despite being outnumbered and outgunned, the British forces held steadfast during the Great Siege, and hostilities finally ceased in February 1783.

When exploring the Rock of Gibraltar, you have two main options to reach the top: taking a guided tour by minibus or embarking on a journey via the iconic cable car.  

Guided Tour by Minibus:

Opting for a guided tour by minibus is an excellent choice if you are seeking a hassle-free and informative journey. The tours usually include entrance to key attractions such as St. Michael’s Cave and the Great Siege Tunnels, as well as panoramic stops to enjoy the breathtaking views towards Africa. Independent Trip via the Cable Car:

If you want to go up by yourself, choose the cable car, for a thrilling journey. The cable car ride itself is a highlight, providing pretty views of the Rock, the Mediterranean Sea, and the surrounding landscape.

However, it’s essential to be aware that the cable car’s operation can be subject to occasional interruptions due to maintenance or high winds. During these times, the cable car service might be temporarily suspended for safety reasons. You should know that the cable car is quite old.

In case the cable car is not running, you can choose between two other options: taking a minibus tour (usually available for a fee of around £25-£30) or embracing a more adventurous spirit and hiking up the Rock. The hiking trail takes approximately 2.5 hours and includes some steep parts.

Visit St Michael’s Cave

Located within the Rock of Gibraltar, St. Michael’s Cave holds significant historical importance and captivates visitors with its intriguing legends.

According to local beliefs, the cave is said to be bottomless, and the Rock monkeys seen nearby are thought to have arrived through ancient tunnels that once crossed the Straits. In ancient Greek times, it was considered one of the Gates of Hades, linked to the underworld.

During World War II, the cave was prepared as an emergency hospital but never used for that purpose. Today, it serves as a venue for events such as concerts, ballet, and drama due to its capacity to seat 600 people and its excellent acoustics.

You can see a fallen stalagmite at the cave’s far end, which likely collapsed thousands of years ago and has since been cemented to the cave floor by natural processes.

See the Monkeys

Gibraltar’s famous residents, the Barbary macaques, are one of the most famous attractions here.

These playful creatures, originally hailing from the Atlas Mountains and the Rif Mountains of Morocco, form the only wild monkey population on the entire European continent.

A legend states that the fate of Gibraltar is intertwined with that of the macaques. The tale goes that if the Apes were ever to leave the Rock, the British would follow suit. Not wanting to take the risk, Winston Churchill took special measures during World War II to ensure their preservation. To maintain their numbers, Churchill went to the extent of bringing some Barbary macaques from Africa to Gibraltar, safeguarding their presence on the Rock.

The macaques have become accustomed to human interaction and may even approach and climb onto people. However, it’s essential to remember that despite their familiarity with humans, these are still wild animals. If frightened or annoyed, they may resort to biting as a form of defence. For the safety of both visitors and the monkeys, deliberately feeding the macaques in Gibraltar is strictly prohibited by law.

Dare to Walk the Skywalk

The Skywalk is Gibraltar’s newest tourist attraction. It sits at 340 metres height, expanding above the edge of the cliff. The floor is made out of laminated glass panels, so stepping over it is pure adrenaline inducing. Even though it’s supposed to withstand speeds of 150 km/hour, when I visited the Rock, the Skywalk was closed due to the wind.

The views from the platform are supposed to be incredible, stretching over three countries, a sea and an ocean and two continents. Nearby you will also find the thrilling Windsor Suspended Bridge, if you’re in for more heart stopping attractions.

Explore the Great Siege Tunnels

The Great Siege Tunnels are a testament to the events during the 1779-1783 Great Siege. This network of tunnels showcases the Gibraltarian people’s ingenuity and resilience during this trying time.

Facing overwhelming odds, the British forces, led by General Eliott, defended the Rock against 40,000 Spanish and French troops. The tunnels, ingeniously designed by Lieutenant Koehler, allowed cannons to fire from steep angles, countering the siege. Sergeant-Major Ince’s construction enabled guns to target the Mediterranean shore. The tunnels later served the Allied Forces in World War II.

Today, visitors explore the tunnels’ dark passages, gaining insight into the historical significance of this period. Exhibits provide a comprehensive understanding of Gibraltar’s enduring spirit and unwavering dedication to its sovereignty.

Have Lunch With A View

Main Street in Gibraltar is not just a shopping destination; it’s a retail haven that offers a unique and enticing experience for visitors. What sets this shopping district apart is the absence of tax, making it a paradise for bargain hunters.

The lack of tax in Gibraltar means that expensive products from top brands as well as alcohol and tobacco are significantly cheaper here. It’s essential, however, to be mindful of the limits when crossing the border into Spain after your shopping spree. Spanish customs regulations allow travellers to bring a certain amount of goods from Gibraltar without incurring taxes or duties.

Going Up the Rock

The fortress city, the southern area.

The southern area contains several of Gibraltar's key historical sites such as Parson's Lodge, the 100 Ton Gun and the bay where HMS Victory, was towed there after the Battle of Trafalgar and Admiral Lord Nelson's body was brought ashore. Europa Point Lighthouse and the Ibrahim-al-Ibrahim Mosque is found at the southern tip of Gibraltar.

The East Side

The east side of Gibraltar contains few historical sites, but the breath taking views of the sheer cliffs makes up for this. The fishing village at Catalan Bay nestles beneath the rugged and spectacular cliffs. You can get to the eastern side of the Rock via or Devil's Tower Road from the north.

Your Options for Marbella to Gibraltar Day Trip

There are three ways you can organize your day trip to Gibraltar from Marbella, the easiest one being either booking an affordable day trip with a tour operator or driving there with a rental car if you don’t mind the drive – please do check the section on the rental car option as that comes with a unique set of issues you should consider.

Below you will find a detailed breakdown for each option. At the end of the article, you will also find some basic information you should know before visiting Gibraltar, as it’s a foreign territory.

1. Tour Operator Marbella to Gibraltar Day Trips

I think this is the easiest and most cost-effective way to get to Gibraltar from Marbella, without the hassle of driving a car and navigating the local traffic. Great value trip that will leave you plenty of time to explore Gibraltar and do a bit of shopping, before returning to Marbella.

This trip has a basic fare which is just for a trip to Gibraltar and back, with free time to explore.

You will also have the option to upgrade your trip if you want to see also the Nature Reserve, where you can see some of the highlights like St Michael’s Cave, Skywalk, Pillars of Hercules, and of course, the famous Gibraltar monkeys running freely here.

Option 2: Marbella to Gibraltar Day Trip With a Rental Car

Driving to Gibraltar from Marbella seems like a convenient option due to the relatively short distance (under 80 km), which would only take you just over an hour to drive.

If you already rented a car for your stay in Marbella, it might be the most convenient option for you, however, there are a few things you should know before you get on the road.

• The highway leading south is a paid toll road, so you will need to have cash ready to pay at the toll booths on your way
• Check that your car rental contract doesn’t specify that you’re not allowed to leave the country, which technically would be the case if you cross the Gibraltar border in a rented car
• Once you get to Gibraltar or La Linea de la Conception, which is the town next to it, you have two options: driving through the border with a car, or parking at La Linea and crossing on foot
• It is highly recommended to park the car at La Linea de la Conception parking lot close to the borders, as crossing the borders in a car can take hours (the lines are notoriously long, especially in the main season).
• Once you park your car at La Linea, you can cross on foot via the pedestrian checkpoints, and then walk to Gibraltar (around 20 minutes) or take a local Gibraltar taxi from there.
• Local taxis or buses do not cross the borders. Pedestrian crossing and border control are much faster and there is virtually no waiting time involved, compared to the line for cars.
• You should take the cost of the tolls, petrol, parking fees and potential taxi fares into account when calculating the total cost of this trip, as it might work out cheaper just to get the day trip from the tour operator

Option 3: Marbella to Gibraltar Day Trip Using Public Transport

The public transport connections between Marbella and Gibraltar are really limited, with just a few long-distance buses stopping at the main station in Marbella.

The bus company Alsa offers up to 8 connections to La Linea per day, with an average journey time of 1 hour and 15 minutes. No buses are going directly to Gibraltar, so you will have to take the bus to La Linea main bus station, and from there walk to the Gibraltar border crossing (about 15 minutes) and cross on foot.

Once you’re behind the border, you can walk to Gibraltar town (about 20 minutes) or take a local Gibraltar taxi from there.

How to Book Marbella to Gibraltar Day Trip: Step by Step

• Head over to the day trip info page here , and select your dates from the calendar.
• Add the number of tickets you want for this day trip
• Once you have the date selected, you will be shown a number of options with different departure locations, make sure you select the one which says Marbella
• PLEASE NOTE: the list of the pickup locations is long, and if you scroll down further you will see Including Rock Tour from Marbella as a trip option – select this if you would like to see the Nature reserve while on this day trip (for a different price of course)
• Once you found the correct trip from the selection, you will see the meeting point marked on a link and also added starting time for the day trip
• Click book now which will navigate you to a payment page
• Once you complete the transaction, you will get a confirmation email which lists all the details you need to know for your trip

Essential Info For Marbella to Gibraltar Day Trip

• It is your responsibility to check the entry requirements to the country, especially if you’re from a non-EU country.
• Gibraltar was annexed to the UK by the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713, following the end of the war. It is considered a British territory abroad, most often referred to locally as ‘the Rock’ (no, not the actor).
• As a British territory, the same rules will apply as if you’re visiting the UK. These rules have changed a little since the UK left the EU.
• Before you plan your trip, please make sure that you check the legal requirements for entry to this UK territory on the  official Gibraltar government website , where you will get advice for every nationality
• As of spring 2023, you can enter Gibraltar with a valid EU passport without any additional paperwork, or even a valid national ID card (EU citizens only).
• If you’re not from the EU, VISA requirements may apply – check the link above for more details
• There are some restrictions on how much good you can bring to Spain from Gibraltar and another way around, you can check the  HM Customs page which has more details . The customs check is both on entry to Gibraltar and also exit.
• Following the passport checks, you will have to cross the airport runway to get to Gibraltar town, sometimes this can take a while if you have to wait due to scheduled plane departure or arrival
• To make sure you don’t have to wait for the runway crossing too long, you can check in advance at what time the planes are landing or taking off, to avoid extra waiting time – check at the  official airport site here . At the moment, the planned departures and arrivals are at 10.40 am, 16.50 pm (arrivals) and 11.15 am and 17.40 pm for departures.
• Traffic in Gibraltar drives on the right, not left like in the UK
• Allow plenty of time for the border crossing, especially if you’re travelling by car

One of the attractions of this tour is The Pillars of Hercules. At the Pillars you will enjoy the views of North Africa Morocco. You will see where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Mediterranean Sea, this being the only entrance to the Mediterranean. You will be above Europe Point, the end point of Europe.

According to Greek mythology Hercules had to take on twelve tasks. One of these tasks was to bring the cattle of Geryon from the west to Eurytheus.

On his journey Hercules had to cross the Atlas Mountains. Rather than climbing over these mountains, he used his great strength to smash through them and as a result, he brought the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean together.

After he had achieved this task, the result was what is now known as The Pillars of Hercules. This became the Rock of Gibraltar on the northern side and Jebel Musa in Morocco on the southern side.

The next site is St Michael’s Cave. Which sees thousands of visitors a year wandering through its huge caverns with just a few steps and easy access. This amazing, natural phenomenon created by rainwater slowly seeping through the limestone rock, turning into a weak carbonic acid which gradually dissolved the rock millions of years ago. In 2021 St Michael’s Cave introduced a new lighting upgrade for the very best experience of the cave’s natural beauty, called The Awakening. Enjoy St Michael’s cave like never before!

An immersive light and sound installation expressing layer upon layer of history fused with the rock. The ancient cavern lays dormant. The Awakening illuminates’ sculptures older than time and reawakens their hidden story.

Of over the 150 caves that have been discovered in the Rock of Gibraltar this is the most visited with over one million visitors per year. The cave is situated at over 300 metres above sea level.

In 1942 during the second world war blasting was in process inside this cave in order to allow for more ventilation. The cave was to be used as an emergency hospital. During the blasting, a discovery was made of a deeper system of caves which is now known as Lower St. Michael’s Cave.

The Awakening

In 2021 St Michael’s Cave introduced a new lighting upgrade for the very best experience of the cave’s natural beauty, called The Awakening. Enjoy St Michael’s cave like never before!

Top of the Rock Skywalk Glass Viewing Platform & Monkeys

Next, we will go to the top of the Rock, and there we will do 2 things: The glass viewing platform called The Skywalk, and visit the monkeys.

The Skywalk is a former military lookout transformed into a state-of-the-art glass platform and walkway giving spectacular views across the Mediterranean. An unbroken 360º panoramic viewpoint. Enter the 360º environment and get a feel for the freedom and exhilaration you will experience at The Skywalk.

From the Skywalk, several minutes’ walk and we will spend some time with our famous Monkeys at Upper Apes Den (The same height level as the cable) The Barbary Macaque Apes are the only ones to be found within the continent of Europe. They reside at the upper rock nature reserve of Gibraltar.

At present there are over 200 apes in 6 packs that roam through the upper rock. Legend has it that in 1942 the population of apes fell to just 7 and the Prime Minister of Great Britain (Sir Winston Churchill) ordered that the population of the apes be immediately replenished because as long as there are Barbary Macaques Apes on the Rock of Gibraltar it will remain under British rule.

From the top of the rock, we will drive to the north side of the Rock to visit the Great Siege Tunnels, something not to be missed. This site explains a lot of the history of Gibraltar under siege. The tunnels were carved out of the rock by hand during the Great Siege which took place between 1779-1783. This was done in order to defend Gibraltar against the Spanish and French forces who were trying to recapture Gibraltar from the British.

Whilst tunnelling it was decided that a horizontal hole be blasted in the rock face in order to improve ventilation for the workmen. On closer examination it was realised that a gun could be put in place to bear down on attacking forces.

Moorish Castle and Old Town of Gibraltar

On the drive down from the Upper rock Nature Reserve we will see the outside of the Moorish Castle, you will be able to see the history and battle scars due to cannon ball shots against the castle between the wars of the Moors and the Spanish. The Moorish Castle is a medieval fortification in Gibraltar which is made up of a number of buildings.

The Moorish Castle stands proudly on the Eastern elevation of the Rock, a proud symbol of the long and colorful history of the Rock of Gibraltar originally built in the 1160CE. It was ransacked by the Spanish between 1309 – 1333. This ‘Tower of Homage’ was rebuilt in the 14th century by Abu-l-Hasan. You’ll be able to look closely to see the cannon dents in the castle walls.

As we exit the nature reserve park we will drive through the old town of Gibraltar.

Gibraltar border control

The land border between Spain and Gibraltar is tightly controlled, with passport checks both when entering and leaving Gibraltar. Despite being a British Overseas Territory, Gibraltar is not part of the UK, and the border control is operated by Gibraltar’s authorities rather than British ones. You should be prepared for potential queues, especially during peak times.

When crossing the land border into Gibraltar, you’ll need to present a valid passport. European Union nationals can also use a national identity card. However, keep in mind that the UK (and by extension, Gibraltar) does not recognize the European ID card as a valid travel document for non-EU/EEA nationals. So, if you’re not an EU citizen, a passport is necessary.

Depending on your nationality, you might also require a visa to enter Gibraltar. Non-visa nationals who can visit the UK for up to 6 months without a visa, are also allowed to enter Gibraltar without a visa. EU nationals, Commonwealth citizens, US citizens, Canadians, Australians, and New Zealanders fall under this category. Nonetheless, it’s recommended to check with your local embassy or official government website for the most updated information.

Although we had some trouble finding the right bus stop in Málaga, as the landmark bank had moved across the street, the bus itself was on time and our ride to Gibraltar comfortable. At the destination, we stopped in an easy location offering maps of the city and had plenty of time to discover the city by foot. Overall a pleasant experience.

We parked the bus and had some shopping time. Killer whales sink yacht after 45-minute attack, Polish tour company says

A group of orcas managed to sink a yacht off the coast of Morocco last week, after its 45-minute attack on the vessel caused irreparable damage, a Polish tour company said.

The incident happened Tuesday, Oct. 31, as a crew with the boat touring group sailed through the Strait of Gibraltar. The narrow waterway bridges the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, which separates the southern tip of Europe from northern Africa. 

A pod of orcas, colloquially called killer whales, approached the yacht and "hit the steering fin for 45 minutes, causing major damage and leakage," the tour agency Morskie Mile, which is based in Warsaw and operated the yacht, wrote on  Facebook in a translated post.

Although its captain and crew were assisted by a search-and-rescue team as well as the Moroccan Navy, the yacht could not be salvaged. It sank near the entrance to the port of Tanger-Med, a major complex of ports some 30 miles northeast of Tangier along the Strait of Gibraltar. None of the crew members were harmed, said the Polish tour agency, adding that those on board the sunken yacht were already safe and in Spain by the time their Facebook post went live. 

"This yacht was the most wonderful thing in maritime sailing for all of us. Longtime friendships formed on board," wrote Morskie Mile. The company said it was involved in other upcoming cruises in the Canary Islands and would work to make sure those boat trips went ahead as planned.

Last week's incident in the Strait of Gibraltar was not the first of its kind. Reported attacks by killer whales that seem to be trying deliberately to capsize boats off the coast of Spain and Portugal have more than tripled over the last two years, according to data  released in the spring by the research group GTOA, which studies orcas around Gibraltar.

"Nobody knows why this is happening," Andrew W. Trites, professor and director of Marine Mammal Research at the University of British Columbia, told CBS News in May. "My idea, or what anyone would give you, is informed speculation. It is a total mystery, unprecedented." 

GTOA recorded 52 maritime interactions with orcas between the Strait of Gibraltar and Galicia, a coastal province in northwestern Spain, between July and November 2020. The incidents picked up in the years that followed, with 197 interactions recorded in 2021 and 207 recorded in 2022, GTOA said, noting that the interactions mainly affected sailboats. 

Then, in June of this year, one of two sailing teams involved in an international race around the world reported a frightening confrontation involving multiple orcas as they traveled through the Atlantic Ocean to the west of Gibraltar. The teams, which were competing in The Ocean Race, said the orcas did not damage their boats or harm crews, but recalled the sea creatures pushing up against and, in one instance, ramming into one of the boats. The orcas also nudged and bit the rudders, one crew member said.
