Elite Sports Tours wants to bring travel agents along for the ride with commissionable product

TORONTO — It’s a good time to be a sports fan in Canada – even if some fans, including anyone cheering on the Calgary Flames and the Edmonton Oilers, are having a better time of it these days than fans of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Not only are the NHL and NBA playoffs underway, but baseball season is also in full swing, and football season – the CFL at least, assuming a deal is struck – should be just weeks away.

Add those big league North American draws to the long list of other massively popular sports played both here and around the world, and you’ve got an opportunity to package travel to games pretty much year round.

And as any sports fan can tell you – or anyone who lives with a sports fan knows – this is an extremely devoted fan base that needs little urging to splurge on a dream trip to see their favourite team play live.

It’s a niche that many travel advisors may have overlooked, but especially now in these post-pandemic days of bucket list travel,  and as more and more agents look to extend their client base, it can be a lucrative opportunity.

Tim Macdonell, who heads up Elite Sports Tours, says packages typically include hotel accommodations and tickets to premier sporting events across North America. Custom trips are available.

The best news? The company is launching a new platform in the in the coming months, and Phase 2 will include a travel agent login and commissionable product. “It would be a great tool for agents,” says Macdonell in this exclusive interview with Travelweek.

Travelweek: For the uninitiated, can you tell us what Elite Sports Tours offers to travellers?

Macdonell: “Elite Sports Tours offers fully customizable travel packages for clients including hotel accommodations and tickets to premier sporting events across North America. In addition to our custom packages for groups of any size, we offer pre-planned sports tours from the Toronto area that include bus transportation, hotel, tickets and pre-game tailgate for football. The pre-planned trips focus on following the Toronto-based sports team (Maple Leafs, Raptors, Blue Jays).

Travelweek: Why and when did the company get started – was there a gap in the market?

Macdonell: “Elite Sports Tours started in January 2008. We saw an opportunity in the market to better serve the sports tourism market. With very little options available to consumers in one of the largest markets in Canada, we saw an opportunity to provide an experience to sports fans that wasn’t available. Curating experiences for sports fans like ourselves and making them available to the average fan.

“There was definitely an opportunity to help fans in the Toronto market to travel to see their team play on the road. As our client base grew and the power of the internet, we were able to expand into other markets across North America and provide custom hotel and ticket packages for sports fans.”

Travelweek: Is there a typical formula for package sports events with Elite Sports Tours, or are the packages very customizable?

Macdonell: “The pre-planned trips are tailored to premium events. However our custom packages are fully customizable. We are excited in 2022 we will be launching a brand new booking platform for clients to search for any combination of tickets, hotels and flights in real-time on our website platform. It will give sports fans the ability to build their dream trip, get the pricing right away and have the ability to book their package online. It’s something we have been working hard at during the pandemic and are excited to launch.”

Travelweek: Can you tell us about how travel advisors can mark up your package prices to generate revenue? And we understand Elite Sports Tours will launch a new travel agent login /commissionable product in the coming months?

Macdonell: “It’s completely up to the agent. Some of them charge their client a flat fee, others decide to add the margin they need to work with.

“In the fall of 2022 we plan on having a travel agent booking system available that will allow agents to get commissionable rates upon approval as an official agent.

“This will be part of our new booking platform. So check back in the fall with what will be a great option for travel agents to offer a new product line to their clients and make commissions.

Travelweek: What are some of the biggest upcoming sports events on the calendar that you’re getting a lot of requests for?

Macdonell: “Las Vegas for football is always a popular one. The NFL does a great job with their scheduling and often teams only visit specific cities once every eight years. So for the sports fan looking to cross every stadium off their list, each season provides them with a new opportunity. However, Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas and SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles (being the new state-of-the-art stadiums) are popular ones. Plus, who doesn’t like a trip to Los Angeles or Vegas — why not both?”

Travelweek: Can you share one of your most memorable sport event trips, either that you’ve put together for yourself, or that Elite Sports Tours has put together for clients?

Macdonell: “Personally, the Super Bowl in Los Angeles at SoFi Stadium was a memorable experience being a Los Angeles Rams fan. Seeing them win the Super Bowl at home, inside one of the most incredible stadiums in the NFL, was priceless.

“As for clients, I would say that we often put together trips for clients that are their ‘bucket list’ trips that they have always dreamed of. Seeing the team they grew up their entire life watching on TV and finally making the trip to see a game at that team’s home stadium. When we get the emails/reviews back from those clients, it always touches the heart. Being able to provide those experiences to clients on a daily basis is what makes running Elite Sports Tours so special.”

St. Lawrence Market

Inside the St. Lawrence Market you’ll find 120 local vendors. Most vendors fall under the category of food and include a mix of restaurants, bakeries, wineries, and other shops. You’ll also find jewelry, clothing, and souvenir shops here. The market is closed Sundays and Mondays, if you do book a tour with us on one of those days you will instead get the opportunity to visit the Distillery District.

Toronto Harbour Cruise

Operated by Mariposa Cruises, this cruise ride takes guests on a scenic sightseeing tour of Toronto’s Inner Harbour. On this Toronto Harbour Tour, guests will gaze upon numerous points of interest from the water including the Toronto Island parkland, Toronto Island Airport, Harbourfront Centre, Rogers Centre (formerly the SkyDome), the Scotiabank Arena (formerly the Air Canada Centre) and the legendary Gibraltar Point Lighthouse.

This massive tower offers a 360° view of Toronto and the surrounding area and features a glass floor which you can walk on… if you’re brave enough. At the CN Tower, guests will be whisked up the glass elevator to the observation areas where you can get a panoramic view of the city and surrounding area. There are actually two observation levels in the CN Tower, and two glass floors. The LookOut Level is situated at 346m in the air and features a large glass floor, installed directly above the original on the Outdoor Sky Terrace level.

From the Outdoor Sky Terrace, you will be able to enjoy a panoramic view of the city while feeling the breeze from the outside air at 342m high. On this level, you will find the original glass floor, which was the first in the world when it opened in 1994. For those who are intimidated by the glass floor, you may find comfort in knowing that this floor is strong enough to withstand the weight of 35 moose.

From sunset to sunrise, the outside of the tower is lit up from top to bottom. The light colors are typically chosen to promote a variety of charitable and special causes. They will also light up in team colors for local major league sports teams for the first night of each game series and final games. Other experiences available at the CN Tower include the SkyPod, the EdgeWalk, and the 360 Restaurant.

What You'll Do

• Your small-group tour of Toronto begins with pick up directly from your hotel in downtown Toronto before heading out to your first stop at the CN Tower.
• What better way to start your day then at the CN Tower where you will be whisked up the glass elevator to the observation area where you will witness a panoramic view of the city and surrounding area from the Look Out Level, feel the breeze at 342m in the air on the outdoor terrace and take a walk on the glass floor - which was the first in the world in 1994 when it opened!
• Your guide will then provide you with a narrated driving tour through the city where you will pass by multiple points of interest including Dundas Square, Queen's Park and Nathan Philips Square. At Nathan Philips Square you will have the chance to take a picture with the famous "Toronto" sign and learn about the PATH beneath the city.
• Your guide will then take you to the St. Lawrence Market which has been named as the top food market in the world by National Geographic. You will have some free time here to do some shopping or get something quick to eat.
• Finally, enjoy the awesome view of the city from the Toronto Harbour on a relaxing Toronto Harbour Cruise. The Toronto Harbour Cruise is seasonal and will be replaced by a visit to Casa Loma in the off season.
• At the end of your Best of Toronto Morning Tour, your guide will drop you off back at your hotel in downtown Toronto.

Taylor Swift is already transforming Toronto — and her private jet hasn’t even landed yet

When you step onto the fourth floor of Toronto’s Bisha Hotel in mid-November, you’ll emerge into a red glow, pass through red curtains, and walk past a bevy of posters paying tribute Taylor Swift’s Red era. Or if you’ve got $5,000 to spare, you might get off the elevator at the dimmed seventh floor, which will be an homage to her Midnights era, and stay in the suite called The Taylor — filled with Swift art, records, wall-bound quotes and even slippers, all cast in a lavender haze .

Just a few blocks north of the Rogers Centre, the massive major-league baseball stadium where Swift is set to perform six nights of her Eras Tour in November, the Bisha Hotel is both well-positioned and fantastically eager to take advantage of Taylormania. The whole hotel is set to transform for the occasion, with the lobby and each floor representing eras of Swift’s genre-hopping career, topped off with a 43rd-floor suite transformed into a Lover Lounge for guests to mingle, get amped up and trade friendship bracelets.

“Everyone from our engineering to our housekeeping teams are all working to pull it off,” said Aaron Harrison, the hotel’s general manager, in an interview as he walked through the hotel this week. The project has been in the works since Swift’s Toronto dates were announced a year ago. Harrison hopes it will both prime the hotel as a nucleus for her fans this fall and cement Toronto as a destination for other events. “People will see what our city can do,” he said. “It’s like an international showcase.”

The Eras Tour is positioned to be the highest-grossing tour in music history, and cities worldwide have rolled out red carpets for the Swifties those concerts bring. Swift’s massive fanbase is big on communing and community; even though the six shows are still two months away, organizations across Toronto are already announcing transformations and special events to bring her fans together and, just as importantly, through their doors.

Whether they’re targeting the thousands of tourists who will swarm the city’s streets or locals who want to celebrate with other fans somewhere outside of Swift’s concerts, restaurants, bars, event spaces and even a drag impersonator and a museum are getting ready to embrace as many Swift fans as possible.

The Bisha Hotel’s high-demand Taylor suite normally goes for $1,449 a night, and bookings are rolling in for November’s Eras dates, when the price will rise to $5,000, as such suites tend to be priced during high-demand events. Even though hotel staff have until now kept the Taylor transformation mostly under wraps, they’re already fielding booking requests for certain Era-themed floors from sleuthing Swifties who’ve already discovered their plans.

Eras concerts are a few hours long, but fans descending on Toronto will still have time, if not days, to spend in the city. There’ll be plenty for them to do. In the Junction neighbourhood, Le Dolci Culinary Classroom plans to host five classes in November to help fans recreate the heart-shaped cake that Swift stabs in her 1989 -era Blank Space video, including a hidden, exploding red-jelly centre.

“We wanted to do something that welcomes her to the city,” owner Lisa Sanguedolce said. “We’ve invited her to the class; I think she’s busy.” But there are plenty of fans, even those who couldn’t get tickets, who are already filling up the classes. The sellout may have even been a motivator for Sanguedolce to host the event: “Obviously, I could not get tickets.”

The community of Swifties includes many who couldn’t get tickets, because of budgets, tickets’ sell-out speeds, or work schedules. The Caribbean-Asian fusion restaurant Patois on Dundas Street West is hosting two Swift-themed Saturday brunches on Nov. 16 and Nov. 23 for all kinds of fans – including its own staff.

“This is an initiative started by them,” owner and chef Craig Wong said in an interview. “Sometimes in hospitality, we’re working when other people are playing. They want to join in on that.” The celebration will feature Swift-heavy playlists, themed cocktails and mocktails, plus, for ticketholders, a free mimosa or orange juice.

The drag impersonator Tay BoBo was lucky enough to get tickets for one of Swift’s New Jersey shows earlier in the tour – and even got engaged after the show. On Sept. 26 at The Drink on Church Street, BoBo will be hosting the Eras Tour (Tay BoBo’s Version), a three-and-a-half-hour one-queen drag tribute featuring nine costume changes over more than 40 songs.

Taylor Cordingley, who has been performing as BoBo for about six years, said their work has brought them professional opportunities, joy and, through fellow fans, community. “We’re all like a family and the communal experience of getting to sing and dance to Taylor’s music in our safe, queer spaces is something that is akin to magic,” they said. They’ve already got more events lining up before and during the Eras shows.

Conventional and unconventional spaces across the city are trying to tap into the same joy. Toronto City Council has decided to name a stretch of downtown streets leading to the Rogers Centre “Taylor Swift Way” in November. The TD Music Hall at Allied Music Centre – the new cultural complex that includes Massey Hall – will be hosting a TayTay Dance Party on Nov. 19 featuring DJ Swiftie, who puts on massively popular tribute nights.

The Metro Toronto Convention Centre will lend 150,000 square feet to a “Taylgate” party on concert days. And even the Bata Shoe Museum is getting in on the fun, hosting a Taylor Swift Fan Night on Nov. 12 ahead of the first shows, with a video dance party in its main event space and, staff hope, some special treats throughout the museum.

After all, said Shan Fernando, the museum’s manager of public programming, one of its major exhibits right now is Dressed to Impress: Footwear and Consumerism in the 1980s – which bears an obvious connection to Swift’s 1989 era.

“We wanted to do something recognizing that not everyone who want to go to the Eras Tour can go,” said Fernando, who plans to wear vintage cowboy boots to the event in tribute to Swift’s earliest country work. “We’re going to try to make it feel like a concert. Even though it’s not exactly that, it may be the closest thing some people will get.”

Only one ingredient might be missing – at least for now. “I wish we had some of her shoes here,” Fernando said. “Maybe she’ll donate some after the tour.”
