Maastricht.

Just returned from Maastricht. Very poor Hotel (Best Western Havre) they didn`t have enough Staff to cope with the 2Bus loads of people. Breakfast was an utter shambles (shortage of Cutlery food etc) The Quality of food for the evening meal was very poor especially on the first night. Didn`t have any free time in Maastricht as the itinerary stated

Good old Irish food 🥘

On our recent trip to Ireland we were dropped off in Downpatrick for three and a half hours with nothing to see except a church and a graveyard, the museum is apparently closed on a Monday so why take us there, what a waste of a day. We eventually get to Belfast and hoping for some good Irish food at dinner but unfortunately for us in the hotel we had freezer food Frozen chips Frozen veg Frozen fish Pasta with a jar of sauce on Must of thought here’s a coach load of old aged pensioners they don’t need good food with vitamins let’s just feed them rubbish. We ended up eating out every night Irish Stew Seafood Chowder Champ and Gammon with fresh veg Added to the cost of our holiday of course, so come on Edwards sort yourself out you charge enough.

Sudden trip cancellation

The company just suddenly cancelled our trip for the 15th August that we had booked with them. They said they didn't have enough passengers. No apology. No proposed alternative trip. No compensation. Just a refund. Deplorable.

Isle of Man

Isle of Man. We did this trip last year, went again this year because it was such a wonderful holiday. The hotel was clean and staff there were more than helpful. The food was outstanding, I would say the best hotel food we’ve ever had. The driver,Pete was so knowledgeable about the area, he made the holiday for us. Exceptional trip and excellent value for money.

We have just came back from a trip to Lake Garda with Edwards Coaches and it was Brilliant from start to finish, our drivers Richard and Troy were exceptional! Every thing was organised and booked for us they went above and beyond to make sure the holiday was perfect for everyone. They were funny and always looked immaculate. They kept us fully informed throughout the journey as we passed certain landmarks. And we had a bonus on the way home when they took us over the Gottard pass in Switzerland it was Stunning and made everyones trip something to remember. We have been on lots of Edwards trips abroad and in the U.K. The only negative is that it could be a little longer with two days each way travelling it would be nice to have a few more days of free time.Cannot wait for our next trip.

My wife and I just returned from our trip with Edwards travel to Kent. It was Ace, well organised not sure Edwards can take credit for the lovely weather But who knows ? Travelled to Disneyland Paris with Edwards coaches, I was really worried about the amount of time spent sat on the coach and being uncomfortable as I had fractured my coccyx a few months ago, but the seats were extremely comfortable and the trip was so enjoyable. Our driver couldn’t have been more helpful, can’t wait to book with Edwards again

Not even worth a star

Not even worth a star, bus drivers just drive past you at stops and when you report it they just fob you off. Left me stranded unable to get home in winter when it’s freezing and didn’t even try and sort it.

New year trip to the Trossachs

We have just returned from a new year trip to The Trossachs. Richard, our driver, was very helpful and funny. He went above and beyond to make sure we got the most out of the trip. He helped make my 50th birthday very memorable and enjoyable. We will be booking more trips with Edwards 😀

Date of experience : December 30, 2023

Overall the trip was good. But not for the first time the standard of the hotels that Edwards are using are not up to standard. The Hotel had a shortage of staff and couldnt cope with the approx 100 people who were on the trip. Breakfast was help yourself and it was chaos, the area was to small and people waiting for dishes, food etc. The evening meal was very poor, so that our driver stated that he had sent emails to Edwards about the complaints he had received. The part of the trip was to see Andre Rieu and see Maastricht before the show to soak up the atmostphere, which didn't happen (talking to people who had in previous years been on the same tour, they went into Maastricht before the show and had free time to see the town) I was very disappointed about that. I purchased better tickets (my priority) and i'm glad I did I was in the fourth row, Edwards tickets was 43 rows from the front. The concert was brilliant.

Timberwolves Coach Throws Shade at Mavericks, Referees Before Game 5

Tom dierberger | may 30, 2024.

Timberwolves coach Chris Finch speaks in a press conference after Game 1 of the Western Conference finals.

  • Minnesota Timberwolves
  • Dallas Mavericks

Just about 90 minutes before the opening tipoff of Game 5, Minnesota Timberwolves coach Chris Finch made sure to point out an issue he has with the Dallas Mavericks and the officials working the Western Conference finals.

Finch was asked by The Athletic's Jon Krawczynski what he would like to see Anthony Edwards do better while guarding Mavericks star Luka Dončić in Game 5.

"He does a better job getting through all those illegal screens they set for Luka," Finch said.

"With Ant, what do you hope that he does well to at least make it a little bit hard on Luka?" "He does a better job getting through all those illegal screens they set for Luka." - Chris Finch pic.twitter.com/iSDZUsjRPY — Action Network (@ActionNetworkHQ) May 30, 2024

Timberwolves forward Jaden McDaniels, who was named to the All-NBA Defensive second team this season, primarily handled the matchup against Dončić over the first three games of the series. But the Wolves swapped the assignment in Game 4, switching McDaniels over to Kyrie Irving and putting Edwards on Dončić.

Dončić averaged 32.7 points over the first three games of the series and scored 28 in Game 4, but Edwards had noticeably more energy on the offensive end while not having to chase Irving around on defense.

Game 5 between the Timberwolves and Mavericks is set to tip off at 8:30 p.m. ET Thursday at Target Center.

Imperial Moscow

On our first ever program was a river cruise in Russia which had just started opening its doors to western visitors. Sure enough, the sailing along the mighty Volga departed in July of 1993 with 207 passengers on board. Boy, what a trip that was! First time cruisers…first western passengers aboard a Russian ship….crew that spoke no English…food that was limited to cabbage, boiled potatoes and cucumbers… a most memorable experience indeed!

However, as a result, we discovered a new way to explore the world, via the inland waterways of various countries, long before river cruising became a staple that it is today! Building on Russia’s popularity, we started expanding our river cruise offers to include Ukraine in 1995, Danube in 1996, China Yangtze in 1997, Egypt Nile in 2002, Mekong Delta Cruises in 2004 and most recently cruises in India & Myanmar (Burma).

So here we are, twenty eight years later, with more than 70,000 passengers that have traveled with us, some of them as many as 11 times over the years! We have survived wars, famines, bird flues, economic crises and Lord knows what else and yet, older but no wiser, we are still as passionate about our business as the day we started it! And with today’s mergers, acquisitions and big corporate and internet travel marketers, we are most proud of the fact that we are still an independent, family run operation whose customer satisfaction comes way before revenues and profit margins…and with your support, we hope to continue for many years to come!

Detroit Pistons mailbag, Part 1: On Monty Williams’ future, 2024 NBA Draft, Malik Monk and more

DETROIT, MICHIGAN - MARCH 11: Head Coach Monty Williams of the Detroit Pistons looks on before the game against the Charlotte Hornets at Little Caesars Arena on March 11, 2024 in Detroit, Michigan. The Detroit Pistons’ busy offseason made some ground a few weeks ago with the hiring of Trajan Langdon as president of basketball operations. While that decision was the most pivotal move to come this summer, it’s not the final tough decision Detroit will have to make.

Per team sources, owner Tom Gores has given Langdon the ability to make changes to the front office and coaching staff as he sees fit. The first domino to fall in that regard came last week when The Athletic reported that the team and general manager Troy Weaver were parting ways . It is believed that the organization is now evaluating the coaching staff, including head coach Monty Williams, who signed a six-year, $73 million contract this time last year.

The 2024 NBA Draft is this month, and the Pistons hold the No. 5 pick despite having an NBA – and franchise-worst 14 wins this past season. Could they trade the pick? Free agency is not far away, either, and Detroit is projected to have $65 million in cap space, which is the most in the league. Will the Pistons use the space to take on bad contracts for assets and continue to build with the youth as the top priority? Will they trade to spend big to add more proven NBA talent?

All of these questions will be answered eventually.

In the meantime, I’ve decided to put out a call for questions to try and provide insight and some of my thoughts on these particular situations. Part 2 of this mailbag will be out Friday. Let’s get into it.

Editor’s note: Submitted questions have been lightly edited for clarity and length.

Langdon is clearly qualified and deserving, but with the Pistons needing to show much improvement (and quickly), wouldn’t it have been better to hire someone proven, who’s already been successful? (Dennis Lindsey , John Hammond ?) — @Nick_Nice21

I get where you’re coming from as Langdon has never been the head decision-maker running an NBA team, but I don’t think it is fair to say he’s not “proven.”

Langdon has been with the New Orleans Pelicans since 2019, and, to my knowledge, has had a very powerful voice when it comes to basketball decisions in New Orleans, despite being under David Griffin, who relied upon Langdon heavily. The Pelicans made the postseason three times in the five years that Langdon was general manager, and that is with Zion Williamson missing big chunks of seasons, including an entire season due to injuries. New Orleans also won 40-plus games twice in those five years. Langdon helped build a sustainable product off the heels of trading Anthony Davis , and, while the Pelicans haven’t won anything significant, it has been a legitimately solid team with and without Williamson while still building for the future at the same time.

Furthermore, Langdon was an assistant general manager for the Brooklyn Nets prior to going to New Orleans. He has the proper experience you’d want in a president of basketball operations. Also, he’s fairly young and could be around for a long time if things go well.

The Pistons tend to gravitate toward decision-makers, coaches who are headline-grabbing names, people who have had success elsewhere. It’s understandable, but it hasn’t worked out well for them yet. I like the idea of going after someone with something to prove.

Langdon has been preparing for this moment since he stopped playing. Every job he’s had along the way sets him up perfectly for what he’s about to embark on in Detroit. Just because he hasn’t done it, doesn’t mean he can’t.

Think about the first “big boy” job you tried to get. You probably didn’t have the experience yet to get it, but you know you’d crush it if given the opportunity. Then, you got the job and crushed it.

I’m all for giving someone new a chance.

Odds Monty is coaching the team next season? — @crowlick

This is the $1 million question right now, yeah?

I’m 50-50 on Williams returning. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that Langdon’s introductory press conference hasn’t yet been announced and Williams’ future is still a swirling question. I don’t know this for a fact, but I can’t imagine Langdon would be trotted out in front of the media until Williams’ future is determined, one way or another.

Williams currently has two things working in his favor: he’s owed a lot of money, and he did not have a good roster last season. He’s not absent of blame for what happened this past year. But it isn’t disputable that Detroit’s roster wasn’t very balanced … or good. Over 3o players suited up. Thirty!

Now, on the flip side, Williams has some stuff working against him. The head coach got 62 games out of Cade Cunningham , who had a statistical season almost identical to that of All-Star Paolo Banchero , and still only managed to win 14 games (which included a historic 28-game losing streak). The year before, Dwane Casey won 17 games as head coach. He only got 12 games of Cunningham due to injury, had a lesser-experienced Jaden Ivey and Jalen Duren , and it was clear the organization was trying to win the Victor Wembanyama sweepstakes after Cunningham underwent season-ending shin surgery. Casey’s team still won more games than the one Williams coached —   and Williams’ Pistons were trying to win. That’s a hard truth to swallow. When you didn’t think it could get worse, it somehow did.

We’ll see what happens. It’s just as possible that Langdon wants to give Williams one more year with a better roster — using next season to evaluate not just Williams but the young talent —  as it is that he wants to get his own head coach in there.

Likelihood that (Simone) Fontecchio resigns? Realistic free agent options? — @jtsportsvisuals

The man dubbed Tek-19 —  I dubbed him Tek-19, and I’m going to make it stick, damnit —  has made it very clear that he wants to return to Detroit next season. He enjoys playing with Cunningham, he enjoys the shots he gets playing alongside Cunningham and has told me that he enjoys playing in front of the Pistons’ fan base. If Fontecchio were able to, he’d sign right now, I believe.

Even though a new decision-maker is in the house, I’ve got no reason to think that Langdon wouldn’t want Fontecchio back. He won’t cost a ton, is an elite 3-point shooter and can defend.

As for other realistic free-agent options, I think Detroit goes heavily after the likes of Malik Monk , Nic Claxton and Gary Harris . Monk feels like someone the Pistons will heavily prioritize due to the team’s need for legitimate 3-point shooting and off-the-dribble shot creation. Claxton would address the rim protection woes. Harris, despite usually missing several games a season due to injury, is the exact type of 3-and-D role player the Pistons could desperately use.

If the Pistons decide to keep the No. 5 pick, who is your best-case scenario at five (not including Sarr)? — @PeteyMac84

Earlier this week, I looked at prospects who fit the type of mold Langdon may prioritize in a player by looking at how New Orleans drafted during his time there. I came away feeling that, if Detroit were to keep its No. 5 pick, that it would prioritize a tall wing who has a good shooting base and potential defensive upside.

With all that said, “the best-case scenario” is probably France’s Zaccharie Risacher. I don’t believe he’ll be there at No. 5, but who knows. This draft is a crapshoot all up and down the board. Risacher is a 6-foot-8 (although he only has a 6-foot-7 wingspan) wing and feels like a connective offensive piece with upside defensively because of how well he moves his feet. His shooting this season overseas is promising, but he has to prove the improvements are real at the next level. Risacher has been lights out as a 3-point shooter in the top French league this season, but he was mediocre-to-bad previously and is shooting in the low 70s on his free throws this year.

There are concerns about Risacher’s finishing around the rim in the half court, but if his shooting has legitimately turned a corner, that and the spacing of the NBA could improve those numbers.

Two questions: 1) Is going after Lauri Markkanen realistic? 2) If so, what would a possible trade for him look like? — @WaltDPhillips1

One, it is not realistic because I truly don’t believe the Pistons could get Markkanen without giving up Cunningham, and that’s not happening. While Markkanen would fit in Detroit like a glove —  as would be the case for Markkanen and 27 other teams —  the Utah Jazz appear to have a very high price tag on him, and I don’t blame them.

Two, this won’t happen, but just to answer your question, here is probably what it would take to get Markkanen to the Pistons: Cunningham, the 2024 first-round pick, a future first-round pick, Isaiah Stewart and Jaden Ivey. I legitimately think it would take all of that to get it done, based on how I’ve heard Utah is valuing its 27-year-old All-Star. And, yeah, Detroit wouldn’t and shouldn’t do this. At all.

Former BYU basketball coach Frank Arnold dies

Arnold coached danny ainge and the cougars to the elite eight in 1981..

(George Frey | AP) Former BYU head coach Frank Arnold cheers during the second half of an NCAA college basketball game in Salt Lake City, Utah, Saturday, Dec. 4, 2010. Arnold died on June 8, 2024.

Former BYU basketball coach Frank Arnold, who led the Cougars to the program’s only trip to the Elite Eight in 1981, died Saturday.

The Ogden native was 89 years old.

Arnold coached the BYU men’s basketball team from 1975-83. During that stretch, the Cougars went 137-94, and won the Western Athletic Conference and went to the NCAA tournament three times.

In 1981, Arnold coached a team with three future NBA players — Greg Kite, Fred Roberts and John Wooden Award winner Danny Ainge — to a six-seed in the tournament.

The Cougars beat Princeton and three-seed UCLA in the first two rounds.

In the Sweet 16, Ainge scored a game-winner to lift the Cougars over No. 2 Notre Dame and onto the Elite Eight for the first time in BYU’s history.

After coaching at BYU, Arnold became the head coach at Hawaii for two seasons (1985-87) and later worked as an assistant at Arizona State.

10 Benefits Of Booking A Coach Class Seat On Amtrak

A mtrak runs over 300 trains every day, connecting 500 destinations across 46 states in the U.S. Passengers can book a seat on one of three classes that most Amtrak trains offer : coach, business, and first.

While the business and first-class seats come with their own set of shiny perks, it's not to say that coach-class passengers are without any benefits themselves. There are ten benefits that every passenger can expect when booking a coach seat on an Amtrak train.

Related: Traveling Amtrak For The First Time? Here Are 14 Things To Know About Amtrak Trains

Coach Class Is Available On Just About Every Amtrak Train

While not all Amtrak trains have business and first-class seating options, every train — barring only Acela which just has first and business class seating — has a coach class.

This means that travelers who aren't sticklers for higher class seating options can hop onto just about any Amtrak train as it will always have a coach class seat.

Travel Dates Can Be Flexible

One of the best benefits that Amtrak's coach class seating comes with is flexible travel. Coach passengers on some Amtrak trains have the option of booking either reserved seats or unreserved ones.

Unreserved coach tickets are valid for up to a year depending on the specific route . This gives Amtrak's coach passengers the flexibility to change their travel dates or hop onto a train at a different time of the day.

Unreserved coach class seats are available on Amtrak's Pacific Surfliner, Hiawatha, and Capitol Corridor trains.

There Are No Middle Seats

The seating classes on a train have much in common with those on airplanes, but there's one major difference when traveling with Amtrak. Unlike flights where economy class passengers — the flight equivalent of coach class — are herded in rows of three or worse yet, four, Amtrak has no middle seats.

That's right: with a 2-2 or 2-1 seating configuration, even coach class passengers can enjoy the benefits of not being squashed in a middle seat between two train travelers. There are only window and aisle seats on Amtrak!

Double Amtrak Points Per Dollar

While business and first class seats get bonus Amtrak Guest Rewards , coach class seats are not without their benefits too. Each coach class passenger gets two points per dollar spent on booking their Amtrak seat .

Rewards start from as little as 800 points, which can then be redeemed on all kinds of things including lounge access and seat class upgrades on Amtrak trains.

One of the best perks of Amtrak Guest Rewards is that it has no expiry date. The only way a traveler may lose their points is if their account remains inactive — no points earned or redeemed — for more than 24 months.

Spacious Seats

The case with trains (and flights for that matter) is that the higher up the class, the more spacious the seats are going to be. On Amtrak's trains, however, even coach-class seats come with quite the legroom to stretch one's feet.

For context, where economy class seats on a flight have 28 inches of legroom, coach class seats on Amtrak have nearly 39 inches of space. Plus, coach-class seats are pretty wide and can recline as well.

BYOF — Bring Your Own Food

Most Amtrak trains have a cafe car with grab-and-go food and beverages that coach-class passengers have access to. Coach class seats on some long-distance trains like the California Zephyr and Coast Starlight even come with access to Amtrak's traditional dining that has a sit-down service with set menus and prices.

The best part of any Amtrak train, however, is that passengers can feel free to bring their own stash of food and drinks too.

Although Amtrak allows outside food and beverages, including alcohol, these are only limited to one's own seat and cannot be consumed in public areas.

Generous Baggage Allowance

Amtrak is pretty generous with its baggage allowance for all passengers — including those with coach seats. Each passenger is allowed two personal items and two carry-on items onboard alongside two check-in baggage on most trains — that's nearly six pieces of luggage !

Plus, it's also possible to carry extra check-in luggage for a fee of $20 per additional bag.

  • Amtrak's baggage allowance: Personal items must be under 12 kg and 14 x 11 x 7 inches; carry-on items must be under 23 kg and 28 x 22 x 14 inches; check-in luggage must be under 23kg and 75 linear inches.

Red Cap Service

Amtrak does not distinguish between seat classes when it comes to helpful services like its Red Cap Baggage Assistance. Most stations have uniformed staff members with red caps that will provide baggage-handling assistance free of cost to all Amtrak passengers.

In fact, all baggage that is handled by Red Caps is protected by a claim check. Considering Amtrak allows nearly six pieces of luggage per passenger, the Red Cap Service can come in quite handy.

  • Stations with free Red Cap service: Baltimore, Boston (South Station), Chicago, Los Angeles, New Haven, New York, Newark, Philadelphia, Portland, Seattle, Washington, and Wilmington, DE

Looking to knock out some work or stay up-to-date on social media while traveling on Amtrak's coach class seats? There's free WiFi to help passengers stay connected! Not only do most Amtrack trains offer WiFi to all passengers free of cost, but some stations have it too.

The only thing to be wary of is that Amtrak's WiFi has limited bandwidth which while enough for things like emails, messages, and general web browsing, isn't speedy enough to support online streaming and large downloads.

Furry Friends Are Welcome

Here's a benefit that only coach class and business class passengers have: they can take their pets along with them. Unlike first-class passengers, those booked in Amtrak coach seats are permitted to take one pet per passenger along with them. What better way to travel with a four-legged friend ?

Amtrak's pet policy comes with a few caveats: Only dogs and cats are permitted onboard; they must weigh under 20 pounds; they are only permitted on trains that have no more than seven hours of total travel time; and an Amtrak train only allows five pets on board at a time, so it's important to book ahead to ensure that pets can travel.
