Could ECCO’s lineup of golf shoes become even more robust? That’s what the high-quality shoe-maker is aiming for with the release of the ECCO BIOM Tour, a spiked golf shoe built for optimal traction and stability in any conditions.

So, did ECCO hit the mark? We tested the laced version of the ECCO BIOM Tour on the golf course – yes, there’s also a BOA option – to find out. Here is our complete life-tested review.

The ECCO BIOM Tour golf shoes were released in September, 2023, and I took them straight out of the box and onto the first tee. No breaking these bad boys in prior to testing.

My first impressions were mixed. They instantly gave my feet the familiar comfort I’ve come to expect from ECCO. If you’ve worn ECCO golf shoes before, your feet know what to expect, and they will not be disappointed.

Second, they felt a little heavier than ECCO’s spikeless counterparts I’m used to. I don’t have a scale to confirm this, but seeing as these are spiked and built to excel in dicey conditions, I assume there’s some accuracy to that feeling.

That didn’t make the walk unpleasant, but if I’m picking a pair of golf shoes for walking, and the conditions are reasonably dry, or even moderately wet, I might pick a shoe that’s a little lighter and more flexible, like ECCO’s BIOM H4 (more on that later).

After walking a full 18 holes in some soggy and muddy fall-in-New-England conditions, it was clear that the BIOM Tour delivers on its promise of a premium spiked golf shoe. The additional balance and connection to the ground throughout every swing, regardless of the surface I stood on, was evident, and will be a welcomed benefit in exchange for a little extra maneuverability for many golfers.

ECCO BIOM Tour: Our Complete Life-Tested Review

I took the ECCO BIOM Tour to a wet and muddy golf course to put them to the test. I studied the traction, evaluated the waterproofing, scrutinized the comfort and I even chime in on the style. Here are the results.

Look & Style

There’s nothing particularly eye-catching or bold about the ECCO BIOM Tour. They come in two colors options, black or white, and two lace options, laced or BOA. 

The white versions that I tested have some gray-ish materials on them, including a rubber wrap that surrounds the bottom of the shoe and wraps around the heel, and some accents on the tongue and top of the shoe, that save it from being a purely all-white shoe. Similarly, the black pair utilizes different materials and shades to disrupt a strictly all-black look.

Either way, there isn’t much style to speak of, and if you’re looking to make a statement with your golf shoes, don’t expect these to be a conversation-starter on the first tee.

On the other hand, if you want a neutral golf shoe, that oh by the way is incredibly functional, and you can pair with any golf outfit, these fit the bill.

Traction & Turf Interaction

The ECCO BIOM Tour provides better stability, balance, and traction than any golf shoe I’ve tested, and this department is where these shoes – in my opinion – really separate themselves from the competition.

Admittedly, my personal preference is spikeless golf shoes. I prefer to walk whenever I play, and today’s spikeless shoes – like ECCO’s aforementioned BIOM H4 – give me more than enough traction to keep my balance on any lie. On top of that, I don’t swing out of my shoes, so I don’t rely on the added connection to the ground that a spiked shoe provides. 

That said, while I’ve never felt I was missing any ground connection playing spikeless shoes, the gap in traction between what I’m accustomed to and what the BIOM Tour provides is wide.

The BIOM Tour golf shoes really make you feel locked to the ground, creating what feels like an unbreakable connection to the turf. Whether or not that’s a feature you crave from your everyday golf shoe, it’s certainly enjoyable, and makes these shoes a little more fun to play in.

The 10 Best Golf Shoes of 2024

For all the features the BIOM Tour golf shoes offer, there is one that’s noticeably missing, and that’s GORE-TEX. So many of ECCO’s best golf shoes boast the 100% waterproof yet breathable technology that makes the shoes standout from the competition, that it’s a little curious these don’t incorporate GORE-TEX.

Despite that, the BIOM Tour does still boast a waterproof membrane and an industry-best 3-year waterproof warranty. Even though we haven’t put the BIOM Tour through years of testing just yet, I left the test with plenty of confidence that these shoes would get me through the wettest of conditions without trouble.

ECCO is known for producing durable golf shoes, and even though these don’t feature GORE-TEX, they still carry the ECCO emblem. With a little maintenance, you can expect to get several years of use from them.

Comfort & Sizing

I mentioned this before, but I’ll say it again, the BIOM Tour are as comfortable on your feet as any ECCO golf shoe. If you aren’t familiar with how ECCO golf shoes feel on your feet, and how ECCO’s BIOM – which stands for biomechanical optimization – technology feels, you’re missing out. The shoes are extremely comfortable, particularly for walking, and the fit is spot on.

Generally speaking and all things being equal, spiked golf shoes aren’t as comfortable as their spikless counterparts, but the BIOM Tour felt as comfortable on my feet as the other golf shoes I’ve tested, and better overall than any other spiked shoes I can remember using.

That’s a lot of information to digest about one pair of shoes. Let’s pull all the highs and lows into one quick list. Here are the pros and cons of the ECCO BIOM Tour:

Who Should Wear The ECCO BIOM Tour

Living in the Northeast, where, if you want a longer golf season, you have to play in some questionable conditions, I always have a go-to spiked option for those fall and spring rounds, and for golfers like me, that’s where I would recommend the ECCO BIOM Tour. 

But, not all golfers are like me, and there is a much larger segment of players who should seriously consider the BIOM Tour. I think these shoes are a great option for players who meet any of the following criteria:

• Golfers who rely on a single pair of golf shoes to get through any conditions;
• Players who want one of the best all-around spiked golf shoes;
• Golfers who typically use a cart;
• Golfers who accept a slightly heavier shoe to access the traction benefits;
• Players with faster swing speeds who rely on an unbreakable connection to the ground to maintain balance throughout the swing.

The Bottom Line

Even if you’re like me, and you prefer a spikeless golf shoe, there are still always a handful of rounds every year that require a little more from your footwear than even the best spikeless shoes can offer.

Regardless of your spiked or spikless preferences, the ECCO BIOM Tour is an excellent golf shoe, and golfers looking for the highest-quality spiked golf shoe, and all the benefits that come along with that, and who are willing to pay a premium price, should consider the ECCO BIOM Tour.

Tour Championship has same venue. East Lake feels like a brand new course

The Tour Championship is back at East Lake for the 24th time

ATLANTA -- The Tour Championship returns to East Lake for the 24th time. Xander Schauffele is not alone in feeling as though he is on a brand new course.

East Lake went through an extensive renovation by architect Andrew Green, who most notably refurbished Oak Hill for the PGA Championship last year, and the changes are stark.

“This is not the same golf course,” Scottie Scheffler said while playing the front nine when he arrived Monday.

Schauffele was more direct, and perhaps the most skeptical. No one has played East Lake better over the last decade . He has never been over par in seven years, with a scoring average just under 67,

“It's got the same name — it's East Lake Golf Club. It's in the same property, similar square footage. But that's about it,” Schauffele said Tuesday.

Green's work was completed in a year, and Schauffele wondered if the Tour Championship might move elsewhere to give the sod a chance to grow, particularly the greens.

Green used 1949 aerials of East Lake in restoring the course that dates to 1904. Every tee, fairway, green and bunker was rebuilt. The bunkers around the 18th green are deep. The bunker left of the peninsula green on the par-3 15th has been removed. The eighth hole has been shortened. The 14th hole has been lengthen and now plays as a par 5. It's a lot.

“The bunkers are new, the grasses are new in the fairways, the greens are new, the grass on the greens are new, the runouts are different, the slopes are different. I think the only thing that’s the same are the directions of the hole,” Schauffele said.

“Whatever record I had is the past. I have no memory or anything really on any hole to go off of, not even a tree I could aim at that I used to aim at. It’s just that different.”

And so much is at stake. The Tour Championship is for the leading 30 players in the FedEx Cup, with the winner getting $25 million.

Schauffele has had the low score twice and matched the low score once, and he only has one trophy to show for it. That was in 2017, when he won the Tour Championship and Justin Thomas won the FedEx Cup from having more points.

Schauffele was asked if any part of him would have thrown himself in front of the bulldozer.

“One hundred percent, yeah,” he said. “My caddie, as well. He probably would have gone first.”

The format has changed to have a staggered start — Scheffler as the No. 1 seed will be 10-under par, two ahead of Schauffele when the FedEx Cup finale starts Thursday. Schauffele had the low score by three shots in 2020 ( Dustin Johnson was the top seed and won ) and he tied top-seeded Viktor Hovland last year.

That was tough to take. Losing the same course where he had so much success? That requires a little more time.

“It's just a new golf course,” Schauffele said. “Kind of a glass half-full guy, so I’ve played a lot of new courses this year that I’ve done okay at. And this is a brand new property.”

There might be some brand new strategies.

Scheffler and Schauffele were among those who contemplated hitting drives left of the par-5 18th onto the 10th fairway. The angle is better to the green, and the reshaped 18th fairway is severe enough that it's canters to the right and creates problems.

“It seems like a safer play to take all that out of play, hit it down 10,” he said. “The green is going to be pretty extraordinarily hard to hold anyways with it being a downslope and having a long club in there. It’s more you’re playing for birdies. There is less opportunity I think for eagle than there was before.”

The greens are firm enough that tour officials do not plan to use a back tee on the par-3 15th, played entirely over water with a longer club, because the green will be too hard to hold.

But they're all playing the same course for a lot of money. And no one is entirely sure how it will play out until the scores count on Thursday.

“As soon as I walked on the property, I was kind of shocked,” Hovland said. "It looks nothing like it used to. Seems like he’s basically changed every single hole out there. It was just kind of wild how much you can actually change the holes with not really moving holes around. It’s all kind of in the same place, but yet none of the holes look exactly the same.

“I could probably try to describe a person that’s never been here before what it used to look like, and it’s almost like you can’t imagine it,” he said. “It’ll be interesting to kind of get used to it, that’s for sure.”

Architect andrew green offers fresh challenge at restored east lake for tour championship, share this article.

ATLANTA – Defending FedEx Cup champion Viktor Hovland arrived at East Lake Golf Club on Tuesday, the same course he torched in 9-under 61 to win the Tour Championship a year ago, and expressed shock at the restoration project that was completed in less than one year.

“It looked completely different than it used to,” Hovland said. “It’s almost like you can’t imagine it.”

Xander Schauffele has never shot over par in 28 Tour Championship rounds, including the low 72-hole score at East Lake three times, but he has never won the FedEx Cup. East Lake has become a personal ATM, which is why when he was asked if there was a part of him that wanted to throw himself in front of a bulldozer and stop the construction, he smiled and said, “100 percent. My caddie as well. He probably would have gone first.”

He added: “To me, it’s got the same name; it’s East Lake Golf Club. It’s in the same property, similar square footage. But that’s about it. I think the only thing that’s the same are the directions of the hole.”

Hours after Hovland’s final putt dropped last August to secure the title, Andrew Green, who led renovations at Oak Hill, Inverness and Congressional, spearheaded the course restoration at East Lake, the oldest golf course in the city of Atlanta and where legendary golfers Bobby Jones and Alex Stirling learned the game.

Tom Bendelow laid out the original course at East Lake, back when it was known as Atlanta Athletic Club. Donald Ross built a new course on the same spot in 1915, which remained untouched until changes were made by George Cobb before the club hosted the 1963 Ryder Cup. Thirty years later, Rees Jones completed a renovation in advance of the course becoming the permanent home of the Tour Championship, the culminating event of the playoffs for the FedEx Cup, since 2005.

Green discovered a previously unknown aerial photograph of East Lake in digital archives from 1949 as his restoration inspiration. This photograph showed the original Donald Ross design in surprising detail and provided guidance on green shapes, bunker shapes and overall topography of the original design.

“We paired that with a set of photos we had right before George Cobb did his work, before the Ryder Cup, and now we’ve painted a complete picture of how things sat on the ground,” Green said. “At the heart of everything we’re doing, it’s finding ways to respect that past and legacy.”

Green – who also worked on Wannamoisett, a beloved Ross design in Rhode Island – took the East Lake team on a trip to the club in the summer of 2023 to look at its greens. They dropped a cell phone down as a hole location and rolled balls on every green, the beginning of a collaborative effort in which Green was given the final say.

“Decisions were made in the field with tape measures,” said Chad Parker, general manager and CEO at East Lake Golf Club. “If the ball lands here, it’s going to do this and the player is going to get rewarded and if it doesn’t it may go in the rough.”

The greens are more undulating with the size, shape, contouring and surrounding runoff areas of each green complex enhanced to create a distinct style and variability to the course. The putting surface at the uphill par-3 second, for instance, is over 9,000 square feet, nearly 3,000 square feet larger than previously with a sinister back-left pin placement perched over a swale.

Fairways have been converted to Meyer Zoysia, which plays firmer and will lead to increased roll, allowing the topography to play a greater role in the strategy of each hole. All greens have been converted to TifEagle Bermuda, which is expected to provide putting surfaces that have improved speed, consistency and overall playability. Many of the bunker shapes were inspired by the original Donald Ross design from 1913, with the most notable being the trench bunker on No. 17.

Water was also a particular focus of the restoration. Green’s team reclaimed a stream between the sixth and seventh holes, and the 14 th hole, which included tee expansion, fairway recontouring and bunker positioning and led to the hole being converted from a par 4 to a par 5 for the tournament. Overall, the course was lengthened by less than 100 yards for the Tour Championship, which will play as a par 71 at 7,490 yards.

“It’s basically a new golf course from what it was before,” said world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler.

With the last piece of sod finally laid down on June 15, time wasn’t necessarily on Green’s sign, so the greens may be a touch firm. But one of golf’s grand dames is new again, and ready or not the top 30 in the FedEx Cup will attempt to pick her apart as they chase a record bonus pool of $100 million.

“Oh, there’s absolutely anxiety, for sure. But I think it just comes with the territory,” Green said. “For me, it’s about providing a canvas and letting the Tour and the guys who do this week in and week out for these players find the best way to find a test but then also allow them to find success.”

Course Overview

Skolkovo Golf Club is a Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course and the only 18-hole course within the City of Moscow. It is the first Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course in Moscow, and only the second in Russia.

Skolkovo is located in a city that combines ancient history and modern culture. The course offers unobstructed views of the largest capital city in Europe.
