15 Best Things to Do in Durres, Albania + Where to Stay

I wouldn’t be surprised if you’d never heard of Durres, Albania before. After all, not many travellers make it to Albania at all. And when they do, it’s the beaches of the Albanian Riviera or the UNESCO World Heritage site, Berat, that beckons them. With good reason.

Why visit Durres, Albania?

You’ll undoubtedly find yourself passing through Tirana at some point during your travels in Albania, and a side trip to Durres offers you a chance to mingle with local people in an authentic way. Durres might not be high on most traveller’s agendas, but it’s a special place for a lot of Albanians with fond memories of their youth.

It’s worth a visit for that reason alone. Add in an impressive history, spanning various empires, and a lovely coastline, and you can’t really afford to miss it.

With its close proximity to landlocked Tirana, and the nostalgic memories that many locals have for Durres Beach, you can bet this city really comes to life in summer… and it’s undeniably the best time to visit.

That’s not to say you can’t visit in other seasons. You totally can… in fact, I’ve visited in winter myself, and found plenty of things to do in Durres. But in the hot summer months, you can experience the vibrant beach culture of the Mediterranean and mingle with Albanians relaxing on holiday.

Where to Stay in Durres, Albania

Overall, Albania is an incredibly affordable country to visit, but prices definitely go up during summer, especially near the beach. Durres is no exception, with Albanian diaspora returning from all over the world for some summer fun.

Things to do in Durres, Albania

In Durres, you can explore an ancient history spanning an impressive 3000 years. Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman architecture dot the centre, a relic of the monarchy watches over the city, and the Adriatic Sea with its many beaches has witnessed it all.

There’s a lot to do in Durres

Tan with Albanian Families on Durres Beach

In Communist times, every citizen in the country received 15 days off per year, and Durres Beach was the place to go. Back then, this huge 10.5km stretch of sand had hotels, restaurants and even a circus for the kids! These days, the circus is gone, but Durres Beach is still a big draw for Albanian families with nostalgic memories of a time gone by.

Stretching across the entire seafront of the city, Durres Beach is located less than an hour away from Tirana, on the Adriatic sea. It only makes sense that the Plazhi i Durrësit (Beach of Durres), is the busiest beach in the entire country, and one of the top things to do in Durres.

While Durres Beach isn’t the nicest beach in the country (that’s reserved for somewhere on the Albanian Riviera), it’s always packed with families enjoying the day. There are second-to-none amenities and services nearby, chairs, umbrellas, and vendors walking along the beach. I recommend spending at least 1 day there basking in the sun, to experience the vibrant energy of Durres, Albania like a local.

Chill out on Vollga Beach

If you’d like a slightly quieter vibe, head a little north of Durres Port, to a small stretch of sand south of Currila beach. This is the beach we’ve visited, every time we’re in Albania. It’s still within city limits and easily accessible.

vollga beach behind the aragosta hotel in durres, albania

The private beach behind the Aragosta is a little calmer than Durres Beach

GOOD TO KNOW  | The Aragosta Hotel & Restaurant has sun loungers available for rent on a private beach behind the hotel. You don’t have to be staying at the hotel to use the beach, even though the gate makes it feel that way. Just barge your way on in, like the rest of the Albanians, and claim a chair. The earlier, the better.

Explore the ancient Durres Amphitheatre

I bet you’d be surprised to learn that Durres is the most ancient city in Albania, with a history dating as far back as 627 B.C. Historically, it was strategically important to various empires due to its geographic location at the mouth of the Adriatic. This makes exploring ruins and architecture one of the most worthwhile things to do in Durres, Albania.

At the Durres Amphitheatre, you can see the legacy of Roman, Christian and Byzantine empires in a single location. Originally constructed by Emperor Tragan in the 2nd century AD, it’s the 2nd largest Roman amphitheatre in the Balkans. It once held as many as 20,000 people!

By the 4th century, the Roman Empire had adopted Christianity, and a small chapel was built inside. Be sure to look for the only medieval mosaic that survives in Albania while you’re inside.

This is the only surviving medieval mosaic in Albania.

You’ll also notice the strange sight of houses built on top of parts of the Durres Amphitheatre. That’s because it wasn’t actually discovered until 1966, and excavation is ongoing.

See Durres Castle / Venetian Tower

One of the best places to see the political and religious upheavals that have centred in Albania is the Durres Castle and it’s extension, the Venetian Tower. The city held a strategic position geographically, where the Eastern Roman Empire met the Western Roman Empire, AND literally, as the Port that joined the two regions. It wouldn’t be overstating it to think of Durres as a sort of political “ground zero.”

From the 1500s to WWI, it was the geographical border between Muslim Ottomans and Christian Europe, and the frontline in the psychological battle between these factions for the hegemony of Europe.

Stroll around the Durres Castle and Venetian Tower, and take a close look at the walls. You can easily identify different empires just by examining them closely. Look for the neat brickwork of the Romans at the very base of the original walls, and the rocks and stones used by the Ottomans directly on top.

TIP  |  Berat is absolutely one of the best places I’ve visited in Albania. This city of 1001 windows is a must-see destination. Visit UNESCO listed Berat Castle on a guided day tour from Durres or Tirana.

Cool off in the Durres Archaeological Museum

Durres has such a rich history that artifacts from the past are plentiful. As a teenager, Agri recalls diving under the water, and finding amphora fragments, not 30 metres away from the beach.

At the Durres Archaeological Museum, you can see these and more in a cool and quiet place. Everything in the museum is clearly labeled in English and Albanian, so you’ll have no problem understanding the exhibits.

Highlights include artifacts showing the worship of Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love, various amphoras, gold jewelry, and markers from the Roman Via Egnatia.

TIP  |  A local guide can help break language barriers and provide context for what you’re seeing. This fully guided tour includes major classical sights, like the Durres Amphitheatre, Durres Castle, Byzantine walls, and Archaeological Museum. Reserve a Durres day tour with local guide here.

Admire the Byzantine Forum / Market

The Byzantine Forum was constructed in the 5th century AD by the Roman Emperor Anastasius I. It was once the centre of the ancient city of Dyrrhachium, with fortifications, a market complex, and a rotunda. The walls of the fortifications were so strong that historians believe 4 horsemen could ride next to each other across the top of them.

It’s not possible to enter the Byzantine Forum itself, but you can still see the beautiful hand-carved columns of the original structure, surrounded by the buildings of modern day Durres.

Find the Mosques of Durres, Albania

There are 2 separate Durres mosques to seek out: the Grand Durres Mosque, and the Fatih Mosque. Fatih Mosque is smaller, but more historically significant, having been built in 1502 during the Ottoman era. It was named a Cultural Monument in 1973.

The Grand Mosque is undoubtedly the more impressive of the 2, visually. It was built atop the ruins of an Ottoman era mosque in 1931. Under the dictatorship of Enver Hoxha, the mosque’s minaret was torn down and destroyed. After Communism fell in 1991, the mosque was rebuilt and reopened in 1993 with the help of foreign aid.

Join the “Durres Parade”

On warm summer evenings, a walk on the boardwalk next to the sea is the mandatory thing to do in Durres. You’ll find Albanian families dressed up in their evening best, participating in what I fondly call the “Durres Parade.”

A walk on the boardwalk is a mandatory thing to do in Durres

If you want to be on the same schedule as the locals, spend the day on the beach, then have coffee or ice cream around 5, before heading home to shower and dress for dinner. Take a stroll on the boardwalk before finding dinner at one of the restaurants parallel to the beach around 7PM. After dinner, join the Durres Parade to walk off dinner. You can stop for another coffee or dessert before heading home for the night.

Get weighed on the boardwalk

On your evening stroll, you’ll probably see men with scales scattered along the boardwalk, and wonder what the heck they’re doing there. Well, after the fall of Communism in late 1991, the economy of Albania was essentially zero. People had no choice but to earn money in whatever way they could. Some people sold cigarettes by the pack or individually, others sold ears of grilled corn, and some weighed people for a few cents.

This is a remnant of those times. If you’re not too embarrassed by a public weighing, hand the guy a few lek, and hop on that scale. Because the truth is, he probably needs the money now as much as he did back then.

Eat fresh seafood next to the Adriatic

Opposite the water, you’ll find a ton of restaurants serving fresh seafood, Albanian meals, and some of the best, most affordable Italian cuisine in Europe. Durres is an Albanian summer hotspot and you’ll find almost every restaurant packed with people enjoying the warm night air, lively atmosphere and sea views.

You can walk into pretty much any restaurant along the promenade, and have a satisfying meal, but check out Bar Monun, for incredibly fresh seafood and a fantastic view.

Foodie Alert!  |  Albanian cuisine is some of the freshest in Europe, but you have to know what to eat and where to eat it. Join this food tour of Tirana, where you’ll enjoy 20 different traditional foods around the city. Reserve a food tour in Tirana here.

Enjoy a kasata

Kasat is a traditional Albanian ice cream that’s existed from before Communist times. It looks almost like a slice of cake, but is characterized by layers of ice cream, jam, and a soft-ish texture.

It’s getting harder and harder to find in Albania, but you can try it out in Durres, at Kasata Bllaca, which has been in business since 1930!

Seek out sufllaqe

With its proximity to Greece and Italy, one thing you can count on is delicious food from both regions. Amazing pizza and pasta can be found in pretty much any restaurant, but for a filling and tasty snack or meal, look out for a sufllaqe stand.

Sufllaqe or souvlaki, is impossibly affordable (and delicious!) on the streets of Durres, Albania.

Look for signs of Albania’s Communist past

The citizens of Albania lived under a totalitarian Communist regime from the mid 1940s – 1991. As the dictatorship solidified, thousands of people were imprisoned in work camps, those deemed “war criminals by the government,” executed, and propaganda and terror used as a method of control.

Social realist statues can be found around the city

Today, Albania is a young democracy, steadily moving forward, however, signs of these Communist years can still be found all over the country. There are thousands of bunkers littering the country, and socialist realist sculptures and artwork can still be found everywhere.

Walk the Via Egnatia

The massive Via Egnatia once connected the western and eastern parts of the Roman Empire and covered a total distance of approximately 1,120km. It was so vast, it stretched all the way from Rome to modern-day Istanbul. And you can find the beginning of this ancient Roman trade route in Dyrrachium (now Durres).

via egnatia map

Via Egnatia starts in Durres by Eric Gaba (Sting – fr:Sting) ( CC BY-SA 2.5 )

Via Egnatia was constructed in the 3rd century BC, of the same large polygonal stone slabs, that all major Roman roads were made from. You can walk this cobblestoned path yourself on the  first 475km of the Via Egnatia Hiking Trail,  which begins in Durres, passes through other parts of Albania, and meanders through Macedonia, before ending in Thessaloniki, Greece.

See the view from the Royal Villa of Durres, Albania

Before fascism, Communism, and the dictatorship of Enver Hoxha, there was an Albanian monarchy, which lasted just 11 years, from 1928-1939.

High up on a hill in Durres, Albania, you’ll find a derelict reminder of this time. The Royal Villa of Durres or Villa Zog was built as a summer palace for King Zog I. He only used it for a single year before he abdicated to Mussolini and the Italians. It was later used during Communist times, as a lavish place to welcome dignitaries such as Khrushchev and Jimmy Carter, on official visits.

The villa was unfortunately destroyed and looted after Communism fell in 1997, but it’s still possible to climb the hill next to the Royal Villa and see a panoramic view of Durres with the sea in the distance.

Villa Zog has been abandoned and ruined

If you can speak Albanian (or are really good at communicating with your hands), you can try asking a groundskeeper or guard to let you inside Villa Zog for a small fee. That’s how we were able to get inside to explore Villa Zog in all its ruined beauty.

How to get from Tirana to Durres, Albania

You’ll most likely travel from Tirana to Durres, which is 34km directly west of the capital on highway SH56. Ideally, you’ll have a car so you can drive yourself, but if you don’t, you can take a regular bus from the Southern Bus Station. Keep in mind that this is not really a station, like we think of it in North America, but more of a common location where buses stop.

These buses depart for Durres every 30 minutes in peak time and cost 130 lek.

If you arrive at the terminal, and don’t want to wait for a regular bus, you can try getting on a furgon. These are mini-buses that just leave whenever they’re full. It should be easy to find them parked near the Dogana Roundabout. Cost: 150 lek.

Thanks a lot!

Hey Shelly,

Thanks for your Durres guide! It is very helpful. I am looking forward to staying in Durres in few weeks time. Do you know what is the best place to stay? Can you tell me for example where the Durres parade is located so we can choose our hotel accordingly? Thanks for your help Shelly 🙂

Hey Wesley, glad you found the article helpful! The Durres Parade takes place across the whole boardwalk next to the sea. What’s your budget? The Hotel Nais Beach that I recommended above was pretty convenient for that and also close to a whole bunch of good restaurants and cafes. Barring that, you could fine the restaurant 4 Stinet there (4 Seasons – also great to eat at) – and find something near there. There’s pretty much direct access to the boardwalk out of that restaurant.

When I was growing up in Italy Durres, or Durazzo as we called it, rhymed with the smuggling trade and the boatloads of migrants sailing over to a better life. The way Albania has changed is staggering! I’ve only been to Tirana but I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Shelley @Travel-Stained

It’s funny how the world changes! Now there are apparently 18,000 Italian expats in Albania and more heading over all the time. If you enjoyed Tirana (which is honestly a bit of a mess) you’d definitely like the rest more… especially the beaches in the south! 🙂

15 Best Things to Do in Durres (Albania)

Durres is a versatile port city with both a modern and ancient appeal. If fun in the sun is in order look no further than the waterfront, where Albania’s largest and liveliest beach buzzes with activity in summer. Durres is also replete with Roman and Byzantine heritage – you can discover the remnants of Albania’s biggest amphitheatre here, while both the city defences and forum date back 1500 years. You could also travel inland to see the castle where Albanian national icon Skanderbeg fought off three Ottoman sieges in the 1400s, or continue on to Tirana to visit the nation’s capital.

1. Durres Amphitheatre

Durres Amphitheatre

Surely one of the greatest pieces of ancient architecture in Albania, if not the Balkans, the Durres Amphitheatre was built in 100AD by Hadrian and was only rediscovered in the 1960s. It was used for about 300 years and back then it could as many as 20,000 spectators. This grand scale is part of what makes the landmark special, but archaeologists are also intrigued by how the building demonstrates the Roman transition to Christianity. Within this site is a chapel with stunning wall mosaics of saints, showing how the amphitheatre took on a religious purpose later in its life.

2. Durres Castle

Durres Castle, Albania

This monument consists of a single tower and wall, and is referred to in many guides as the Venetian Tower. It dates way back to the 400s, during the reign of the Byzantine Emperor Anastasius I who was born in this city. Since its construction Durres Castle has seen some serious action, having been reinforced by the Venetians just before the city’s conquest by the Ottomans. In 1939 the castle was the base for a ragtag collection of Albanian patriots trying to delay the advance of the Italian army. Some 360 locals held their ground successfully until armoured Italian units disembarked at the port and took the city.

3. Durres Beach

Durres Beach

Albania’s most popular destination for a day by the sea, Durres Beach stretches out for more than ten kilometres along the city’s waterfront. The urban part of the beach is crazy in the summer, when it’s packed with people from all walks of life. There are all manner of things going on, from games of table football to water sports events. You’ll never need to leave your seat for a snack as hawkers patrol the arteries between the tight grids of sunbeds, selling a huge array of drinks and foodstuffs, often from the packs of donkeys that they lead along the sand.

4. Royal Villa of Durres

Royal Villa of Durres

The Albanian monarchy, which lasted from 1928-1939, has been defunct for more than seven decades, but this building atop a hill in Durres stands as an interesting reminder of this era. These days the Royal Villa is derelict, but it has a fascinating history. It was built in 1937 for King Zog I, who only got to enjoy the residence for a year. After the monarchy was dissolved the villa became a grand communist reception building, welcoming both Nikita Khrushchev and Jimmy Carter on official visits. When Albania descended into temporary civil unrest in 1997 the villa was ransacked, and has remained unaltered since then.

5. Archaeological Museum

Archaeological Museum, Durres

The largest archaeological museum in Albania, here you can see what all the different civilisations that settled this region left behind. It’s just a few steps from the waterfront and was established in 1951, with collections that cover every period from the Ancient Illyrian culture, through the Roman era, Byzantine times and the rule of the Ottoman Empire. The Roman items are particularly intriguing and include miniature busts of Venus and stone sarcophagi. The museum as an institution has its own story to tell, as it was ransacked in the unrest in 1997 and has only recently been renovated.

6. Byzantine Forum

Byzantine Forum

At the heart of Durres is the modest but evocative collection of colonnades that made up Macellum’s forum after the Roman era. It dates between the 600s and the 800s and is paved with excavated marble stones. You can get up close to the Corinthian columns in the forum to see the exquisite detail of the stonework.  At one time there would have been a statue at the centre of the plaza for whichever Byzantine emperor was in power at the time. Close to the forum are Durres’ Roman thermal baths, which were discovered along with the amphitheatre in the 1960s. What remains is a hypocaust and a pool five metres by seven.

7. Durres Mosques

Mosque Durres

There are two impressive mosques to track down in Durres, as Albania’s relationship with religion was disrupted during communist times, and each place of worship has its own story. The Great Mosque is the younger of the two structures, having been built in 1931 by King Zog I on the site of an earlier Ottoman building. After 1967 its minaret was destroyed and the building was used centre for local youth organisations. Smaller and much older is the Fatih Mosque, which dates to 1503 in the first decades of Ottoman rule. This was also closed down during communism but was declared an Albanian cultural monument in the 70s.

8. Spille Beach

Spille Beach

A few short kilometres south of the city, just after Kavaje, is this natural beach that offers a contrast to the hectic waterfront at Durres. Spille is for those who want a more relaxed day by the sea and attracts fewer visitors, making it easy to find a spot to yourself at any time of year. Despite the seclusion and natural setting, all the services you could require are on offer. You can rent chairs and parasols for extra comfort, and throughout the day fruit sellers will sell fruit fresh from the market.

Tirana

It’s easy to catch a bus east to Albania’s capital, which is where the country’s past and present clash. If you want to see some real soviet architecture get to the Piramida, which has lain empty since the end of communism and was built as a monument to the dictator Enver Hoxha. For further proof of Albania’s complicated connection to Hoxha, you can visit his grave, which has frequently been vandalised. Bunk’Art is also exciting, as you get to tour a nuclear bunker from the 1970s that is made up of 100 different rooms, giving it the air of an underground city. Also see: Things to do in Tirana .

10. Krujë Castle

Krujë Castle

If you’d like you to witness the scene of a momentous event in Albania’s history then head northeast to Krujë Castle, popularly named after the Albanian national icon Skanderbeg. As the Ottoman Empire conquered the surrounding region this fortress stood firm, holding out against Mehmed II’s armies in three successive sieges during the 1400s. To give you an idea of its national importance,  the castle is on the back of Albania’s 500 Lekë banknote. Inside the gothic building is an exhibition devoted to Skanderbeg, and you should  also take a moment to bask in the rugged upland  beauty of the setting 550 metres above sea level.

11. Krujë Bazaar

Krujë Bazaar

This neighbourhood of Krujë is a step back in time, as Krujë’s entire 18th and 19th-century commercial district has been carefully preserved and continues to thrive. The market extends all the way from the gates of the castle to the centre of Krujë and is made up of a single cobblestone street along which all sorts of sellers tout their wares from wooden stalls. As you stroll through the bazaar you’ll also even get to see artisans crafting items in their workshops. For a keepsake you could pick up hand-carved wooden ornaments, a bottle of locally distilled raki or hand-woven textiles.

12. Shën Mëhill Basilica

Shën Mëhill Basilica

Located in Arapaja, a southeastern suburb of Durres, are the ruins of St. Michael’s Basilica, a palaeo-Christian church from 400 AD. The basilica was rediscovered during an archaeological dig in 1974, when several remarkable features were unearthed. The headline here is the church’s large and detailed mosaic that covers 54 square metres, and thanks to its many years under the soil is in a near-immaculate state of preservation. Also on the site are the remnants of the church’s naves and a fragment of a pillar with a decorative relief carved into it.

13. Via Egnatia

Via Egnatia

Much as it is today, in Roman times Durres or Dyrrachium was the gateway to Southern Europe for visitors from the Italian mainland. And in those days there was a Roman road that began in Durres and led all the way to Byzantium, modern day Istanbul. So if you’re up for a hike with a historical flavour you could retrace the steps of the merchants and legionaries in ancient times and walk a portion of Via Egnatia. The route has been mapped out all the way from Durres to the city of Thesalonniki in Greece, but at 475 kilometres don’t expect to complete it in one afternoon!

14. Rodoni Castle

Rodoni Castle

For an adventurous day out follow the coastal road north to this fortress in a photogenic setting at the end of a rugged peninsula. When the famous castle at Krujë withstood its first attack from the Ottomans, Albania’s feudal lords took the opportunity to bolster the region’s coastal defences. The castle was built in 1452 and at the time covered most of the tip of the cape. The Ottomans did return to complete their conquest in the 1460s, and Skanderbeg used Rodoni Castle as a point of embarkation for his escape from Albania to Brindisi in Italy.

15. Shtam Pass National Park

Shtam Pass National Park

Happily you can take in the vast mountain scenery of this national park from the comfort of your car. The road from Krujë to Burrel twists through the park and reaches heights of 1250 metres. You’ll pass through many hectares of virgin pine forest, and at phases will turn past precipitous drops. You could also stop by Kroi i Nenës Mbretëreshë (Source of the Queen Mother), which is natural spring that has been tapped and you can fill your water bottle. The name comes from the 1930s, when the story goes that the Albanian royal family used this spring as their only water supply.

15 Amazing Things to do in Durres, Albania (2024)

  • December 29, 2023
  • by Jenoa Matthes

durres albania visit

Durres, Albania is the country’s second largest city and is a popular resort town. Located just 40-minutes from Tirana, it makes for a great day trip from the capital, or as a nice spot to enjoy the beach for a day or two.

In this guide, we’re sharing the 15 best things to do in Durres, including beach recommendations, popular historical sights, and a few hidden gems. Additionally, we’ve included tips on the best places to eat, where to stay, and some of our favorite day trips nearby.

While Durres wasn’t at the top of our month-long Albania road trip itinerary, we ended up spending a few days here at the end of our trip. We needed a place to relax and take it slow after a whirlwind trip, and it was a great place to do just that.

Read on to discover our Durres, Albania travel guide.

15 Best Things to do in Durres

1. visit the durres amphitheater.

durres albania visit

The Durres amphitheater is the largest and most important Roman amphitheater in Albania. Built in the 2nd century AD under Emperor Trajan, it once held up to 20,000 people for different spectating events, such as gladiator fights and other ancient games.

The amphitheater was recently discovered in 1966 and is now one of the best ways to experience the city’s ancient history.

durres albania visit

We spent 30 minutes walking around the Roman amphitheater and the grounds. For being almost 2 centuries old, it is in decent condition and is one of the best ancient Roman sites that we saw during our trip to Albania.

Our personal opinion: The amphitheater is the main highlight of Durres. It’s pretty cool to see an ancient theater in the middle of the city; however, it’s not as well preserved as some that you may see in Italy.

Practical Info: The Durres amphitheater is open daily from 9AM – 6PM. Tickets cost 300 LEK per adult. Discounts are available for students and children.

2. Hang out at Durres Beach

durres albania visit

Over 10 kilometers long, Durres beach is the largest and most popular beach in Albania. During the summer months, Durres beach transforms into a popular resort destination for Albanians.

There are a mix of private and public beaches. We rented a chair for 500 LEK for the two of us for the day. That was in May, so be prepared to spend around 1,000 – 1,500 LEK for two chairs and an umbrella during the high season (June to September).

Plenty of restaurants and snack shops line the beach, so you won’t have any problems finding somewhere to eat lunch. We ordered pizzas for lunch from Alternative Foods Durres , and we’d recommend it!

durres albania visit

On our first day at the beach, we stayed closer to the city and the beach was okay. We headed further south to Plazhi I Golemit near Hotel Grint on our second day and much preferred this beach, as it was cleaner and quieter.

There are less restaurant options here, but you can always eat at one of the resorts nearby.

How to get to Durres beach

The closest part of Durres beach is about a 50-minute walk from the center of Durres. To get there, you either need to take a taxi or drive if you have a rental car.

We had a rental car and the drive took around 10-15 minutes. Parking was easy to find on the main street located just on the other side of the beach.

3. Visit the Venetian Tower & Durres castle remains

durres albania visit

Durres castle was built in the 5th century during the Byzantine empire and once was a very powerful fortress. Today, only a wall and a tower remain.

The Venetian Tower is a circular stone tower that was built by the Venetians in the 15th century. It was originally part of the city’s defensive walls.

durres albania visit

You can climb to the top of the tower for views of the sea and city. However, the tower is only around 30 feet (9 meters) tall, so you won’t be able to see a lot.

Our personal opinion: The tower wasn’t open during our visit to Durres in May, so we just walked by and checked it out for a minute. Don’t expect much because there is only the tower and a portion of the wall remaining. It’s worth a glance and a climb to the top (if open), but you won’t need to spend much time here.

4. Check out the Archaeological museum

The Durres Archaeological museum is the largest museum in Albania and is one of the top things to do in Durres. It houses an extensive collection of artifacts spanning from the prehistoric period (over 3,000 years ago) to the 4th century.

You’ll find everything from ancient pottery, sculptures, and mosaics most notably from the Hellenistic and Roman periods.

The museum showcases an array of local archaeological findings that will take you on a journey throughout Albania’s history.

We recommend spending around 1.5-2 hours exploring the museum.

5. See the Durres Mosque

durres albania visit

Located in the historic center of Durres, the Durres Mosque, also known as the Grand Mosque, is a significant religious and historical site in the city.

Originally opened in 1938 and built by Italian architects, the Grand Mosque has experienced a turbulent past. During the communist times in the 1960s, the building was converted into a youth center where it hosted performances on the main floor and became a restaurant on the upper floor. Much of the interior was destroyed, damaged, or altered.

In 1979, the mosque was further damaged in an earthquake. Finally, in 1993, the Durres Mosque was reopened as a religious center and is currently an active place of worship.

It is located in Illyria Square, the main square in Durres, and cannot be missed.

6. See the Byzantine forum

The Byzantine Forum in Durrës is an archaeological site dating back to the 5th century. This ancient marketplace showcases the city’s importance during the Byzantine era.

Characterized by its circular layout and central courtyard, the Byzantine forum was a bustling center of commerce and social interaction.

Unfortunately, the site is not in the best shape. It is surrounded by a fence, so you’ll simply have to enjoy ancient history from afar.

This is a quick visit and shouldn’t take more than 15-20 minutes.

7. Walk along the waterfront promenade

durres albania visit

From the city center, make your way towards Sfinski along the waterfront walkway. This area is surrounded by modern buildings, and you start get the feeling that you’re in a resort town.

durres albania visit

The promenade is lined with palm trees, gardens, and is very well-kept. Along the way, you’ll pass a ton of beach bars and restaurants, which is a perfect place to relax, grab a drink, and enjoy the views of the Adriatic Sea.

8. Hang out at Sfinksi

durres albania visit

Sfinski, also known as Cape Square of Durres, is a unique structure made up of a set of concrete stairs. It marks the end of the promenade and is a wonderful spot to relax and enjoy a bit of people watching. Plus, the views of the city and the sea from here are amazing.

durres albania visit

We took our towels and books and laid out on the steps for an hour or so. We watched some fisherman catch a few fish, read our books, and enjoyed the cool sea breeze.

9. Check out the Royal Villa of Durres

The Royal Villa of Durres, also known as King Zog’s Palace, is a historical landmark that offers a glimpse into the brief Albanian monarchy.

Built in the 1930s as a summer palace for King Zog, the first monarch of Albania, the palace is symbol of the monarchy that once ruled over this country.

While the building itself is not open to the public, you can walk up to it and admire the architecture from the outside. Because the villa is set atop a hill, you can enjoy amazing views of the city and the Adriatic sea from the here.

10. Wander the streets with the locals

durres albania visit

Although Durres is considered an ancient city in Albania, nowadays, the city is filled with modern buildings and amenities. Join the locals for the daily “xhiro” – a leisurely walk outside before sunset.

The city comes alive at this time with people hanging out in Illyrian Square, the city’s main square, and along the waterfront promenade. Durres feels a bit like a maze, so we enjoyed turning down some smaller streets to get a taste of the quieter side of the city.

durres albania visit

Durres is a popular destination for Albanian tourists, but not as much for foreign tourists. You’ll get a real sense of local Albanian life here and wandering around the city is one of the best ways to experience it.

11. Eat some fresh seafood

durres albania visit

Due to its ideal coastal location, Durres is renowned for its fresh (and affordable!) seafood. If you’re looking for one of the best places in the country to east excellent fish, Durres is the place to do it.

Restaurants bring in freshly caught fish and serve everything from codfish to sea bass, shrimp, crab, and so much more. Everything is reasonably priced compared to other European countries.

We personally loved all of the seafood with pasta varieties. Check out our Durres restaurant guide below for some of our recommendations on where to get the best seafood in Durres, Albania.

12. Take a day trip

Durres’ central location makes it a great spot for day trips. Below, we’re sharing a few day trips that we recommend.

View of the Old Bazaar in Kruja, Albania

Located 44 km (50 minutes by car) northeast of Durres, Kruja is one of our favorite places to visit in northern Albania. The city is famous for its ancient shopping bazaar, iconic castle, and Skanderbeg museum.

You really only need a half-day here to see everything in the city. We suggest spending time shopping for local goods, such as handwoven rugs, olive wood tools, and much more. In our opinion, it’s the best place in Albania to buy local crafts and souvenirs.

Cape of Rodon

Located 49km north of Durres (1h10min by car) is the beautiful Cape of Rodon. Here you’ll find incredible landscapes, a 15th century castle, and gorgeous sandy beaches surrounding the area. This is a perfect day trip for nature lovers.

Tirana is Albania’s capital and is located 36km (30 minute drive) east of Durres. We would recommend taking public transportation into Tirana, as parking and the roads here are a bit chaotic.

Spend the day exploring some of the city’s main highlights, such as Bunk’art, Skanderbeg Square, and the National Historical Museum.

Located 90km (1.5 hours) southeast of Durres, Berat is one of our favorite cities in all of Albania. Known as the city of a thousand windows , the ancient city is filled with historical sights and charming streets.

Eat some local Albanian food at one of our favorite local restaurants, such as Homemade Food Lili , and explore the Berat Castle on this day trip from Durres.

Don’t have a car? Book this day trip from Durres to Berat with a local guide. Transportation is included!

13. Check out some of the other beaches nearby

durres albania visit

One of the main things to do in Durres is to go to the beach! While Durres beach is a great choice, there are plenty of other beaches nearby worth visiting. Here are a few of our recommendations.

Spille Beach

Known for its beautiful white sandy beach, Spille beach is filled with bars and restaurants and is a nice escape from the busier beaches closer to Durres.

Lalzi Bay Beach

Lalzi Bay is one of the most popular beaches in this part of Albania. You’ll find plenty of bars and restaurants as well as water sports available here.

Kallmi Beach

Just north of Durres, Kallmi beach is a small and secluded beach that is a nice escape from the crowds. If you’re looking for a bit of peace and quiet, this is the place to go.

14. Go wine tasting

durres albania visit

The countryside surrounding Durres is filled with gorgeous vineyards and wineries. We spent a night at Agroturizem Gjepali , a gorgeous property that’s locally owned where you can enjoy a fantastic multi-course meal with a wine pairing of Albanian wines.

durres albania visit

Our dinner here was one of the best we had in all of Albania. Make sure to book in advance to ensure you get a spot!

Here are a few other nearby wineries we recommend:

  • Abaia Winery and Vineyard
  • Kokomani Winery
  • Kantina Belba

15. Enjoy the Views

Up on the hill, near the Royal Villa of Durres, you’ll find some great viewpoints overlooking Durres and the Adriatic Sea. Walk towards the lighthouse, or discover some of the concrete bunkers around the hill while taking in the views.

We recommend walking to this viewpoint .

Is Durres, Albania worth visiting?

durres albania visit

We have mixed feelings about Durres, Albania. While the beaches are nice in the area, the city itself is okay compared to other places in Albania.

If you don’t have time to visit the Albanian rivera down south, such as Ksamil or Himare , but still want to experience the Albanian beaches, then you should check out Durres for a day or two.

We personally think the beaches and towns in southern Albania are more beautiful and pristine than in Durres.

How many days to spend in Durres?

You only need 1-2 days in Durres to see the main sights in the city center and enjoy a beach day.

We spent 4 days in Durres and spent one day exploring the city and the rest of the time doing day trips to other beaches and towns nearby.

How to get to Durres?

durres albania visit

There are a couple of ways to get to Durres from the main cities in Albania. Either you can rent a car or take the public bus.

During our month in Albania, we rented a car for the entire trip. It was affordable and convenient, plus driving in Albania wasn’t bad at all – despite what some people may say!

If you’re on a tighter budget or simply prefer to take public transportation, the bus is another great option. Make sure to have cash on hand to pay the driver directly once you get on the bus. You can check out bus timetables on the Gjirafa website .

Here are a few popular routes to Durres and information on how to get there by both car and bus.

Tirana to Durres

By Bus: The bus ride from Tirana to Durres takes the same amount of time as a car – 35 minutes. Of course, if the bus driver has to stop for other people along the way, it’ll take a bit longer. The bus station in Tirana is a bit outside of the city center, so you’ll either have to take another local bus or taxi to get to the station before heading to Durres.

By Car: The drive from Tirana to Durres takes about 35 minutes without traffic. Driving in Tirana is a bit chaotic, so we recommend staying a little outside of the city if you’re driving. Otherwise, if you’re picking up your car from the Tirana airport and driving to Durres, it’ll take around 30 minutes.

Shkoder to Durres

By Bus: There are just a few direct buses that leave from Shkoder to Durres everyday. The direct route takes about 3 hours each way. The indirect route with a stopover in Tirana takes about 2 hours and 45 minutes, so it’s actually a bit shorter!

By Car: The drive from Shkoder to Durres takes about 1.5 hours. We drove to Durres from Shkoder and the roads were well-paved and easy to follow.

Berat to Durres

By Bus: There are plenty of buses leaving from Berat to Durres everyday – Durres is the last stop on the route from Berat to Tirana. The ride takes around 2 hours each way.

By Car: The drive from Berat to Durres takes about 1.5 hours, depending on traffic. We felt completely safe driving on this road, as it’s not too crowded and is straightforward to follow.

Where to eat in Durres

durres albania visit

There are plenty of good restaurants in Durres, and we’re always scoping out the best places to eat for you! From seafood to Italian cuisine, we’re sharing our favorites below.

  • SEMA – This is a fantastic seafood restauarant and cafe that we actually went to twice! After all of the heavy food in Albania, we really enjoyed their seafood salads and pasta. Try one of their cakes for dessert!
  • Spaghetteria Luli – This is our favorite restaurant in Durres. It is owned by Granny Luli and her son who dish up incredible homemade pasta. We got the mushroom pasta that they recommended and it was wonderful. She even gave us some soup to try because she insisted! They are only open for lunch and it’s tight on space, so you may have to wait a minute or two!
  • Brutal Steakhouse – Located in Golem, about 20 minutes north of the city center by car, this upscale restaurant is known for their high-quality take on local dishes. Definitely worth it if you’re visiting the beaches in Golem.

Where to stay in Durres

durres albania visit

When we arrived in Durres, we were expecting to be right on the beach based on the photos we had seen. However, we were in the center of the city and a 10+ minute drive (or an hour long walk) away from Durres beach.

We’ve split up this section into the best hotels in Durres city center and the best resorts on the beach in Durres, so you can choose depending on your preference.

Durres City Center hotels

  • Our top pick: Hotel Boutique Vila 8 | We stayed here and loved it. The rooms are beautiful and luxurious at an affordable price point. Plus, the location is just off one of the city’s main streets.
  • Hotel Epidamn Boutique & Spa
  • Giulia Albérgo Hotel

Durres beachfront hotels

  • Meliá Durrës Albania
  • Flower Hotels & Resorts
  • Volmar Hotel

The Ultimate Guide to the Best Things to Do in Durres

The Ultimate Guide to the Best Things to Do in Durres

The Best Things to Do in Durres

The ancient city of Durres is only 34 km from Tirana in Albania. It’s really worth a visit if you like history, enjoy the beach or can’t resist an ice cream! There are tonnes of awesome things to do in this former capital city. In this post we detail the very best things to do in Durres.

A Very Brief History of Durres

The city of Durres has the second largest population in Albania with around 113,500 people. It is also the former capital of the country. The port city can be dated back to 627 BC when it was founded by the ancient Greeks. Durres also held an important part of the Roman Empire and has the largest amphitheatre in the Balkans, built in the 2 nd Century.

More recently, after the death of Dictator Enver Hoxha and the collapse of Communism in 1990, Durres was a point of mass emigration from Albania to Italy. So much so that ships were hijacked and forced to sail to Italy at gun point, allowing over 20,000 Albanians to leave the country. The Italians put the port under Military control and a food aid programme was set up.

Nowadays, Durres is a popular beach town for Albanian tourists. There are plenty of hotels and restaurants and a beautiful promenade along the seafront.

Things to do in Durres

Where is Durres

The post city sits on the Western coast of Albania. It is only 34km from Tirana making it ideal for a day trip from the capital city. It is also only 123km from the southern Albanian town of Vlore.

How to get there

It is really easy to get to Durres from Tirana by bus, car or taxi. Check out our comprehensive guide HERE . You can also take a bus from Tirana Airport directly to Durres.

Saranda and Vlore in the south are also well connected by public transport to Durres.

Durres is jam packed with awesome things to do. Each time we visit we find something else interesting to discover. Here are some of the very best things to do in Durres.

The Best Things to Do in Durres – Hit the Beach

The beach was our first stop. We took a walk along the long pier and gazed across the water that lead to Italy. You can also get a nice outlook over the town from here. As we visited in April, the beaches were very quiet. The tourists don’t really arrive until the summer but most things were still open.

The beach in Durres is hard to miss! During the off seasons the sands are clear and quiet – we had the place almost to ourselves. There are a variety of different beaches to explore in and around the town. However, if you are planning on staying in town, Durres beach is great.

The Best Things to Do in Durres – Explore Durres Castle

Just by the beach is Durres Castle. Built by the Byzantine Emperor Anastasius in the 5th and 6th centuries, this made Durres one of the most fortified cities on the Adriatic. It is not really a castle, as such, but a tower from the Venetian walls. There is now a small café on the roof of the tower with great views.

Things to do in Durres

Marvel at the Great Mosque

The Great Mosque (AKA Faith Mosque) in Durres was built in 1931 by King Zog I. It was constructed on the site of an earlier Ottoman building.

Things to do in Durres

The Roman Amphitheatre

Our last stop before heading for the bus was the Roman Amphitheatre. This is well preserved considering it dates back to the 2nd century BC. It was not discovered until 1966 and this was almost certainly by accident. The story goes that a local resident (and keen archaeologist) found a fig tree that had fallen a few meters below ground. After a little investigating, he insisted that a full excavation of the area was carried out. Not far below the earth was the amphitheatre.

The arena was built to contain 12,000 to 20,000 spectators and walking through the tunnel is certainly like something from the movie “Gladiator”. Entrance is only €3 and this includes a Byzantine chapel with some beautiful mosaics.

Take a Day Trip to Tirana from Durres

Tirana is super easy to get to from Durres. You can drive in 40 minutes or take a bus from the bus station. For more information on amazing things to do in Tirana, check out out post HERE .

Explore Shtam Pass National Park

Just an hour and 30 minutes drive from Durres is the spectacular Shtam Pass National Park. Here, you can explore 2000 hectares of pine forests, mountains and lakes.

Where to Eat in Durres

Durres is well known for its pizza and ice cream. This is probably due to its close geographical proximity to the Eastern Italian coast.

Pizza in Durres

We had been advised to try some pizza while visiting Durres. Due to the close proximity to Italy, this town has a great reputation for pizza. We stopped for lunch at Proper Pizza and we NOT disappointed! After great debate, we ordered a BBQ pizza to share and it was delicious. The staff were really helpful and patient with our terrible attempts at speaking Albanian!

proper pizza

Ice Cream in Durres

Next on our list of recommendations was ice cream. We stopped at a place called Pasticeri Behari . This was a small, slightly retro looking café, not far from the square we passed earlier. We sat in and enjoyed a coffee before ordering some ice cream to go. At €0.30 per scoop, it was probably the best ice cream ever! We would highly recommend this when visiting the coastal town!

How Expensive is Durres

Durres is very inexpensive compared to other European destinations. It is easy to find good quality food in a nice restaurant for around €10 per person. On our most recent visit, we paid €30 per night for a 1 bed Air BnB apartment in the centre of town in October. Travel is also good value, if not a little unpredictable. For example, the bus to from Durres to Tirana costs 150 Lek (about €1.20).

What is the Weather Like?

The summers in Durres can get hot! With some days reaching towards 40 ° C (104 ° F). For us, this is a bit too much. Spring and autumn are warm, pleasant and a lot quieter. Winters can get cool and temperatures can drop to around 5 ° C ( 41 ° F).

Things to do in Durres

When to Visit Durres

Durres is at its busiest during the summer months. The sun is out and everything is open. However, that of course means there are more crowds. Saying that, it is not really that touristy compared to places like Corfu or Dubrovnik.

The shoulder seasons are cheaper and quieter and the sun is not scorching hot. This would be our preferred time to visit.

How Long to Stay in the City

How long to stay really depends on the time of year that you visit. Ideally you will need a weekend in the summer. This will allow plenty of time to relax by the beach and fit in a few day trips to explore the surrounding area.

If you are visiting off season, a day trip from Tirana will probably be enough. Either way, Durres is definitely worth visiting.

How to Travel Around Durres

Durres is a medium sized town and the centre is easily walkable. If you want to explore the area around the town, renting a car might be the way forward, but more on that below…

With a bit of forward planning, you can use the Albanian furgons (minibus) to get around the area.

Is Durres Worth Visiting?

As you can see, there are many amazing things to do in Durres. So we would say yes, absolutely Durres is worth visiting! We visited for a day from Tirana. However, the town itself was so much to offer, you could easily make it your base when visiting Albania.

What to Pack for your Trip to Durres

We have put together a convenient packing list for the little extras that you might need for your trip.

  • Hiking boots or comfy shoes for walking
  • Snacks for travel
  • Mini handheld fan (buses get incredibly hot in the summer!)
  • Book/audiobook/music
  • Water bottle
  • Weather appropriate clothing, such as windbreaker and fleece OR swimsuit, flip flops and beach towel
  • Insect repellent
  • Sunscreen and sunglasses
  • Map or downloaded GPS or map application on your phone
  • Charger and power bank
  • Decent camera (phone) with plenty of space for pictures of the spectacular scenery
  • Cash – Albania Lek

Should I Rent a Car in Albania?

This is a tricky one, and definitely down to personal preference. Albania’s public transport is cheap and cheerful and most places are accessible by bus. However, there are very few railways in Albania. The buses – or furgons – are great for travelling between towns and cities. However, the timetable can be a bit restrictive. If you can haggle, a taxi driver will take you anywhere!

Hitchhiking  in Albania is a popular way to get around and is supposedly perfectly safe. We have not tried this ourselves but have spoken to many successful hitchers.

If you decide to rent a car in Albania, please make sure you take out the full insurance. Drivers in the Balkans have their own unique style… On our last visit to Saranda we spent 3 days in the town and witnessed 2 crashes.

Plan your journey in advance as there are many small roads that are not more than dirt tracks. Several mountain routes can be perilous if you do not plan ahead and take great care.

Rent a car in Albania

The Albanian Language

Many Albanians in the cities speak a little English but it is useful to learn a few phrases in Albanian. It is certainly not an easy language for English speakers, but any attempt is greatly appreciated by the locals. Here are a few words to try out:

Hello  Tungjatjeta ( toon-jah-TYEH-tah )

Please  Ju lutem ( yoo LOO-tehm )

Thank you  Faleminderit ( fah-lehm-meen-DEH-reet )

Yes  Po ( poh )

No  Jo ( yoh )

Goodbye  Mirupafshim ( meer-oo-PAHF-sheem )

Where to go next

Ready for more inspiration? Why not try exploring the town of  Saranda , just a bit further south? This beautiful seaside resort is full of surprises!

Final note:  Things change in the Balkans all the time and there is not much information online in English. We would definitely advise checking with a local where possible. We found people to be really friendly and super helpful.

Durrës was once – albeit briefly – Albania’s capital. It’s now virtually an extension of Tirana, joined to the capital by a ceaseless urban corridor full of hypermarkets and car dealerships. Blessed with a reasonable 10km stretch of beach, Durrës is a pleasant – if rather built up – escape from Tirana and has a charmingly Mediterranean air once you get off the seafront, which can be very crowded, noisy and a bit tacky during the summer months. The town has a long and impressive history, and for international visitors, the main reason for coming to Durrës isn't for the beaches but for the interesting Roman amphitheatre and superb archaeological museum.

6 Best Things to do in Durrës, Albania

Famous since ancient times for its active cultural life, Durres, behind the image of the classic seaside resort next door, holds significant traces of Illyrian, Hellenic, and Roman culture and buildings and works dating back to the Byzantine era.

Getting around the city is very simple: the two nerve centers are rruga Taulantia, the street parallel to the new promenade, and the Town Hall Square, Sheshi Liria, where the main streets of the old town of Durre’s start. Except for a part of Shetitorja, the long pedestrian street looking towards the sea, all the attractions we will tell you about are located in the old part of the town, i.e., in the northern part of Durrës (right side of the port looking towards the sea, for example).

Our guide to what to see in Durrës follows a well-defined route: you can decide to follow it and visit the points of interest in the order in which we are going to present them to you, or improvise, but one thing is certain: during your cultural trip you will not miss any of the city’s attractions.

Things to do in Durres

Archaeological Museum of Durrës

Archaeological Museum of Durrës

Heading downhill towards the seafront, in Taulantia street, there is another of the jewels of Durres, the Archaeological Museum, which houses the largest archaeological collection of Albania, recently renovated and officially reopened to the public on March 20, 2015, by Prime Minister Edi Rama, after four consecutive years of closure.

The museum consists of contiguous environments oriented from prehistory, starting from the findings made in the territory of Durres and the surrounding area, dating back to 2000 BC, continuing for the classical, Hellenistic, and Roman times; the photos, however, do not follow the path of the route because they are mainly made of interesting finds that are mostly from Roman times.

Among the objects worthy of note are the stone sarcophagi and Roman funerary stelae and a significant number of miniature busts depicting the goddess Venus, which clearly testifies how the city was once an important center of worship dedicated to the goddess. The outdoor area has also proved to be very pleasant and interesting because it allows you to walk through gardens and arcades where wonderful marble statues of considerable size are preserved.

The Archaeological Museum of Durres is open from Tuesday to Sunday, from 09.00 to 16.00, and the entrance ticket costs 300 leks. Our advice is to absolutely visit this place because it offers significant insight into the city’s history.

Vollga Promenade

Vollga, Durres

The wide promenade of Durres is undoubtedly one of the city’s main attractions, where you should not miss a nice walk.

Especially after sunset, the 17,744 m² of the promenade, divided into two by the harbor and the entire city, comes alive with stalls, rides, and thousands of people (from children to the elderly), who relax and chat during the evening xhiro. Hotels, cafes, restaurants, discos, and trendy clubs are not really lacking in this area of the city: you will be spoiled for choice!

The skyline of the buildings that frame the avenue seems to overlook the dynamic figure of the monument that closes (or opens, depending on where you start walking) the promenade: in typical socialist style, the statue recalls the vain attempt of resistance to the invasion of the troops of fascist Italy that landed here on April 7, 1939.

The Castle and the Venetian Tower

The Castle and the Venetian Tower

Leaving the promenade, the exploration of the city can only continue with a short walk through the main streets of the old town, once defended by the imposing walls of the Castle of Durrësit (Kalaja and Durrësit in Albanian), of which today only a Venetian fortification tower, a few meters of city walls, and three gates to the old town (two overlooking the sea, and one on the south-western side).

The stronghold was built around the 5th century A.D. at the behest of the Byzantine Emperor Anastasius I, a native of Dyrrachium (today’s Durrës), with the main purpose of defending the citadel from the barbarian hordes, who constantly threatened the empire in those years. Thus, Durrës became the most fortified town on the Adriatic coast, with walls as high as 12 m in some places, and watchtowers placed every 60 m of the perimeter; the defenses were further reinforced first by the Venetians and then by the Ottomans.

Evidence of the period when the city was under the control of the Serenissima is the Rotunda, the Venetian Tower of Durres from the 15th century, which has a diameter of 16 m and a height of just over 9 m, a single floor, and a flight of stairs leading to the crenelated roof.

You will find it at the entrance of Anastas Durrsaku Wrinkle, next to the pitch that houses the monument to Mujo Ulqinaku, a patriot and officer of the Albanian navy, killed by the fascists in 1939, during the historical resistance of Durres to the Italian invasion of Albania. The cocktail bar set up on the tower’s terrace, fortunately, hasn’t changed the original layout; the view of the sea and discreet drinks are suggestive.

Ethnographic Museum of Durres

durres albania visit

Halfway between the Venetian tower and the Roman amphitheater is the Ethnographic Museum of Durres, otherwise known as Muzeu Aleksandër Moisiu. In fact, the museum building is the House-Museum of Aleksandër Moisiu, an Austrian actor of native language and Albanian origins, among the most famous in the German-speaking area in the early 20th century.

The first two rooms celebrate Moisiu’s acting career with film posters, photos, and other interesting objects and stage documents. Simultaneously, on the upper floor, there is a real ethnographic museum: the collection includes traditional costumes and artifacts of central Albania’s most characteristic and symbolic craftsmanship.

A small mention should also be made of the house itself, a typical 19th century Durrës house, which has preserved all the original architectural features. The price of the entrance ticket is only 100 lek.

Royal Villa of Durrës

Royal Villa, Durres

The place of greater historical and tourist interest of Durazzo would be the Villa of Zog, the palace that the President-Re of the Albanians had built on the hill overlooking the bay. The building, designed in 1926 by architect Kristo Sotiri, was donated by the business community of Durres to the king, who loved to use it as a summer residence.

The royal villa not only enjoys an optimal position – three sides of the building are directly facing the sea – but it also has a very characteristic shape, reminiscent of an eagle (the undisputed symbol of Albania). Beyond the architectural beauty and decorative magnificence, the Villa of Zog proves to be important also from a strictly political point of view, having represented the symbol of the monarchy in the city.

After the Second World War, the villa passed into the Albanian government’s hands, which used it mostly as a government reception building for foreign delegations until it was seriously damaged and looted during the 1997 unrest. Restored by the royal family, the Villa of Zog today has a military function. It is inaccessible to the public: a real shame because it would be one of the most significant architectural testimonies of a controversial historical period.

Our advice is to venture out on the paths of the hill that houses the villa, with comfortable shoes because all in all, the path, although pleasant, is not so simple, and to get lost, once you arrive at your destination in front of this gigantic building, which shows a unique and mysterious charm, but above all enjoy the walk, between the fresh sea air, the smell of pine trees that dot the hillside, and the views of the city from several vantage points, a spectacle!

Roman Amphitheater

Roman Amphitheater, Durres

The Amphitheater of Durres. It is the largest structure of this type in all the Balkans and was built in the second century AD, during the reign of Emperor Trajan, to accommodate about 20,000 spectators.

The caveat has an elliptical shape of a good 20 m high and almost 136 in diameter, with steps originally covered with white tiles; the western part of the hemicycle rests on a hilly area opposite one is located on flat ground.

Once inside, you can admire the intricate system of stairs and galleries that were part of it and dwell on the beautiful early Christian chapel with frescoes, built in the second half of the fourth century and then embellished with fascinating mosaics in the eleventh century AD.

Discovered in 1966, the Roman amphitheater was ignored for years by the local administration, so much so that it fell into conditions of almost degradation in past years. Still, the restoration work started in 2004 by the University of Parma has completely renovated it and made it a tourist attraction of great interest. It also seems that so far, only half of the entire structure has been brought to light!

The Amphitheater of Durres is perfectly located in the city center and can be reached in a few minutes, going up Anastas Durrsaku street from the waterfront; the ticket costs 300 leks.

A Day in Durrës: Albania’s Most Historic Coastal City

Last Updated on: 19th March 2022, 10:47 pm

Durrës, just an hour from Tirana , is Albania’s most developed and crowded beach town. But whether or not the party atmosphere is what you’re looking for, the city also happens to be one of Albania’s most historically significant. In the following Durrës guide, we’ll be covering the top attractions the city has to offer, all of which can easily be seen in a day.

Known as both Epidamnos and Dyrrhachion in antiquity, Durrës was initially a settlement of ancient Illyria. It was later settled by Greek colonists in 627 BC who intermixed with the native population.

Durrës quickly became a prosperous city thanks to its thriving port, and it was renowned throughout the ancient world for its architecture. It remained important throughout the Roman and Byzantine eras, and it still acts as a major economic and tourism hub to this day.

The following Durrës guide is presented in no particular order, as the city is small enough to see everything on foot regardless of which route you choose.

Durrës Guide

Walking Up to The Royal Villa

If you’re looking for views of the city, there’s no better place to go than Durrës Hill, an easy walk from the city center. And the hill is home to one of the city’s most unique landmarks, as it was built during a brief period in which Albania was ruled by a king.

Durrës Guide

A lot went on in Albania during the 20th century. Upon achieving independence from the Ottomans in 1912, the country was split up by other European powers following World War I. The United States, however, was a big supporter of Albanian independence and sought to protect it from the Italians and the Serbs.

Following more political instability, a man named Ahmed Bey Zogu took control, though numerous rebellions attempted to oust him. After retaking power as president, he ruled for several more years during the 1920s. But in 1928, he dissolved the parliament and declared himself king.

durres albania visit

He continued to rule the country as King Zog I until 1939. And throughout that time, this hilltop building in Durrës served as his summer residence.

The villa was restored in 2007 and has hosted various world leaders over the years. Unfortunately, it’s not an official tourist attraction and can only be admired from the outside.

Durrës Guide

As for King Zog? Despite starting off as an ally of Mussolini, the relationship soured over time. Italy invaded Albania in 1939 and Zog fled to Greece with his family, taking the country’s gold reserves with him.

The Durrës Amphitheater

The highlight of the city is undoubtedly the Durrës Amphitheater, dating back to Roman times. Durrës was taken over by the Romans following the Roman-Illyrian wars of the 3rd century BC, and it quickly became one of the most important cities of the Adriatic region.

Perhaps most famously, from 48-43 BC, the city saw heavy fighting between the forces of Julius Caeser and Pompey, with Pompey coming out victorious.

Durrës Guide

The city then remained prosperous for the next several centuries. And this amphitheater was constructed in the 2nd century AD during the reign of Roman Emperor Trajan (98-117).

With a diameter of 26 meters and 20 m-high stands, the amphitheater could seat somewhere between 15-20,000 spectators. But despite its size, it was only rediscovered in 1966, which explains why so many buildings are situated around its top.

Durrës Guide

Throughout its first few hundred years, gladiator and beast fights were the most common spectacle here. They persisted until 404, the year such events were banned throughout the empire by Emperor Honorius.

Decades before that, however, this amphitheater was damaged in a large earthquake in 346 and had to be rebuilt.

durres albania visit

The highlight of the theater is walking through its dark inner corridors. Despite having been lost for centuries, they still remain in great condition.

Within the amphitheater, don’t miss the small Byzantine chapel featuring well-preserved mosaics along the walls. Also during the Byzantine era, the area around the theater was used as a necropolis.

The center of the amphitheater remains a grassy mound, but there are surely more interesting discoveries to be found should excavations continue.

Durrës Guide

More of Byzantine Durrës

After the fall of Western Rome, Durrës remained an important city under the Byzantine Empire, and numerous remnants from this period can be found throughout town.

Just behind the amphitheater is a well-preserved portion of the city walls. Durrës was the birthplace of Eastern Roman emperor Anastasius I in 430, and he rebuilt and expanded these walls following a major earthquake.

Durrës Guide

According to a group of locals I met, a legend states that a vast treasure is hidden somewhere within the walls. The problem is, nobody knows exactly where, and the whole thing would have to be dismantled for a serious search!

Given the ongoing economic problems in Albania, however, many are tempted to look.

Durrës Guide

In the city center, you can find the remains of a former Byzantine market. It took on a circular shape with a well in the center, and some of the old columns have been re-erected by archaeologists.

In ancient times, the open courtyard would’ve been surrounded by various shops, and it would’ve likely been the busiest part of the city. Fittingly, it’s located just next to one of Durrës’s busiest roads today.

On the other side of the street, meanwhile, you can find a Byzantine-era well tucked down a side alley.

Durrës Guide

Near the water, you’ll find Durrës Castle, which is really just one surviving bastion of the original city walls established during Byzantine times. Subsequent empires would then rebuild and expand the walls, and this particular tower was erected by the Venetians.

Durrës Guide

Centuries later in 1939, Albania was being invaded by Fascist Italy, who arrived at the port of Durrës on 7 April. But despite being far outnumbered and outgunned, an Albanian marine named Mujo Ulqinaku would not be deterred.

He, along with Abaz Kupi, commander of the local gendarmerie, gathered a group of several hundred brave resistance fighters. Despite only having three machine guns, they managed to hold off the much larger Italian navy for a few hours.

While some of the action took place on the water, many of the fighters took refuge in Durrës Castle, shooting at the invaders from atop the tower. Despite their best efforts, however, the city was eventually taken the same day.

The Durrës Archaeological Museum

Durrës is such a historically significant city in Albania that it has its own archaeological museum. Established in 1951, it’s among the largest of its kind in all of Albania.

Thanks to recent renovations in 2015, the museum has a modern feel and informative signage, and it’s easily one of the top places to visit in this Durrës guide.

The museum houses a few thousand artifacts in total, with the oldest dating back to the 7th century BC. There are also sizable collections from the Classical Period (480-335 BC) as well as the Hellenistic Era (323-30 BC).

Durrës Guide

Aside from some larger sculptures in the center, most of the items here are smaller pieces of ancient Greek pottery or fragments of funerary stelae from the Roman era.

Durrës Guide

You’ll also find various heads of small limestone statues in addition to a large marble sarcophagus carved in the mid-2nd century. Nearby is a collection of storage vessels used to transport various goods to and from the thriving port of Durrës.

durres albania visit

While no individual piece is too terribly impressive, the museum is well worth visiting for the comprehensive background info it provides about ancient Durrës. You should be able to see and read everything in about an hour.

And while at the National History Museum in Tirana , don’t miss the large mosaic piece which depicts a young girl. It was discovered in central Durrës during World War I.

National History Museum Durrës

Around Durrës

Aside from the attractions mentioned in the Durrës guide above, one of the most popular activities in the city is walking along the seaside promenade, lined with restaurants and public parks.

Durrës Guide

While I visited outside of the summer tourist season, there didn’t seem to be any swimmable areas around the promenade. Durrës does, however, boast the 10 km-long Durrës Beach, among the most popular in the country. But it appears to be a 5-10-minute drive from the city center.

For those looking for a coastal city in which you can swim right in the center,  Vlorë or  Sarandë would be more up your alley.

Additional Info

Durrës is situated about an hour away from Tirana and regular buses depart until evening. From the city center, you will first need to take a public bus to the ‘Regional Bus Terminal – North and South Albania’. From Skanderbeg Square, it’s about a 15-minute ride.

Once at the terminal, which is really just a large parking lot filled with buses, look for a bus with Durrës written on it. In my case, it was a coach bus and they seem to depart every hour.

You may also be able to find minibuses or shared taxis from other parts of Tirana. But online information regarding transport in Albania is either nonexistent or unreliable, so it’s best to ask at your hotel.

Arriving in Durrës, be sure to memorize the location of the bus terminal and return there for a bus back to Tirana. Despite having taken a coach bus in the morning, I took a minibus back, but it still arrived at Tirana’s main terminal.

Tirana isn’t a huge city, and most of its main attractions are accessible on foot as long as you’re somewhere close to Skanderbeg Square.

I stayed at a place called Villa Center , located within short walking distance of Skanderbeg Square. Even though I booked it through Booking, it felt more like a typical Airbnb experience.

I stayed in a private room with a private bathroom, but the kitchen and living area were shared with the other guests staying down the hall.

While the host lives out of the country, communication via WhatsApp went very smoothly and he was always quick to answer my questions. The neighbor in charge of looking after the apartments also speaks English.

Day trip from Tirana to Durres

If you decide to visit Durres as a day trip from Tirana you can do it independently or with the tour. Both options are good but what you choose depends on the level of hassle you want to deal with.

things to do in durres albania

To do it independently you first need to go to the Regional Bus Terminal – North and South Albania (Terminali i Autobusave të Veriut dhe Jugut) located some 5 km from the center. To get to the terminal you need to take the city bus from the stop behind the National Museum, near Skanderbeg Square.

Buses in the direction of Kamza and Instituti will take you to the bus station. You can get the ticket on the bus, the price is 40 lek and the ticket inspector will come to you when you board the bus to sell you the ticket.

Buses between Tirana and Durres run more or less every 30 minutes throughout the whole day so you don’t need to aim for a specific connection, you just need to show up at the bus station and find the bus (it should be near the entrance on your right), you pay for the ticket inside.

Tirana bus station

In Durres, the bus station is located near the port, less than a 2km walk from the Amphitheater and the waterfront. The walk itself will give you a good glimpse into the central part of the city, before arriving at the main Durres attractions.

Things to do in Durres

And here are the best things to do in Durres, in no particular order.

Wander around the center

Durres has a surprisingly pleasant center, perfect for a stroll around. Granted, it’s not like the beautiful old towns you will find in Berat or Gjirokaster but it’s still a nice enough place, easy to enjoy.

The heart of the center is Freedom Square where you will find some of the most important places in Durres, such as the Town Hall, the Theater, or the Great Mosque of Durres.

The buildings in the central part of the city are similar to those in Tirana, a weird version of the Albanian (neo)modernist architecture that somehow works well here. The streets are lined with palm trees that add a nice touch to the overall look of the area.

things to do in durres albania

See the Roman Amphitheater

Dating back to the 2nd century AD, the Roman Amphitheater in Durres is the largest construction of that kind located in the Balkans. Back in the day, it could fit up to 20.000 spectators who gladly came here to watch various performances.

Unfortunately, the amphitheater didn’t serve its purpose for a very long time – it’s been destroyed in two earthquakes, in the mid-4th century and in the 10th century. After the first earthquake the Christan chapel, with frescoes and mosaics, was established here – you can still see its remnants on the site.

The Durres Amphitheater isn’t in the very best condition, to be honest, but it still is an impressive place, located right in the center of the city and surrounded by modern buildings. You can visit the site to wander around and explore all its corners. This is definitely one of the most important places to visit in Durres.

Find the remnants of the Durres castle

The only remaining part of the Durres castle is the city walls, built in the late 5th century to protect the place and strengthen in Middle Ages.

Back in ancient times, Durres was the most fortified place in the Adriatic and the center of the region, the first fortification was built already in the Hellenistic times. In the 16th century, a circular Venetian tower was added to the city walls.

You can find both, the tower and the walls right in the center, next to the Amphitheater. Around one-third of the original walls remained, with a height of up to five meters and three entrances through them.

things to do in durres albania

See King Zog’s Palace

Back when Durres was the capital of the newly independent nation at the beginning of the 20th century, the city grew and flourished. That’s when one of the leaders of the Albanian movement – Ahmed Zogu (later known as King Zog I of Albania) decided to build his villa on the hills above the Durres seaside.

The impressive pink building was considered the most luxurious property in the whole country until it was destroyed by rioters in 1997 and eventually left abandoned. Now the building is fenced and impossible to visit but it’s still worth coming up here to see its interesting architecture (the building looks a bit like a chicken).

things to do in durres albania

Find the Byzantine Forum

This is such a random yet so valuable place to see in Durres.

The Byzantine Forum was established here at the end of the 5th century. It had a diameter of 40 meters, with the marbled, paved ground, and was surrounded by the colonnade.

Still today you can see a few Corinthian columns scratted around – the best remnant of the bustling forum that used to operate here until the 7th century. Once the place was abandoned it served as the cemetery.

Now it’s easy to miss the place as it’s surrounded by random buildings and blocks of flats but when you find it you will surely appreciate this great reminder of the long history of Durres.

With its long and interesting history, dating back to the 7th century BC, it’s not surprising that Durres is home to the largest Archeological Museum in Albania, established in 1951. Inside you can find a few thousand artifacts from the Greek, Hellenistic, Roman, and Byzantine period (some of them the most valuable items of that kind in the country), a perfect testimony to the city and surrounding area.

The Archeological Museum is located in the center, a few steps away from the seaside promenade, and is a very easy place to include in your trip to Durres. Just keep in mind that the place is closed on Mondays.

Find great viewpoints

Every place looks better from above and Durres is no exception here. There are a few great viewpoints from where you can admire a lovely panorama of the city and beyond, as well as the Adriatic Sea.

When you go to see King Zog’s Palace continue a bit further on the same road until you find the clearance with a nice view of the sea down below as well as one of the piers on the promenade. On your right, you will also see the lighthouse from where the view is even better.

things to do in durres albania

Another place, slightly more difficult to find ( here is the exact location ) is the so-called “Durres Balcony”, also located not far from King Zog’s Palace. From here not only you can see the extensive city panorama but also the Roman Amphitheater, the impressive port (the largest one in Albania), and the mountains beyond Durres.

Walk along the seaside promenade

Right in the center you should go for a walk along the seaside promenade. This is a place to see and be seen in Durres, packed with people strolling around despite the time, day, or the weather (when I was there it was raining a bit, but there were still people wandering around).

There are two piers on the promenade, not far from each other (the newer, concrete one and the steel one), both offering nice views of the sea and the waterfront. You can also sit down in one of the cafes or restaurants to relax a bit and observe the world around you.

When walking down the promenade you will find some interesting statues as well, including the random combination of Mick Jagger, John Lennon, and Bob Dylan playing together or the brutalist monument dedicated to the Unknown Soldier.

things to do in durres albania

Find bunkers

Bunkers are the unofficial symbol of Albania. Back in Hoxha’s regime time, around 750.000 of these concrete structures were built all over the country, including the most remote locations. Still today you can find many of them around, and that includes the central part of Durres.

When wandering around you will surely stumble across the mushroom-shaped bunkers scattered around in the parks or located right next to the road. Near Durres, you can even find bunkers on the beach or in the sea!

Relax on the beach

To be honest, there are so many better places for the seaside holidays in Albania than Durres (mostly in the south of the country) but if you happen to be here, there is a long and sandy beach in the city, a bit away from the center. Durres is a popular resort place and there are plenty of hotels along the seaside line to choose from.

The beach can get a bit crowded, especially in the summer season, but it offers all the facilities you might need. The sea is also known for having a long shallow part, which makes Durres beach a popular place for families with children.

Go for day trips

If you decided to spend your holidays in Durres, you can use the city as the base for day trips to some of the best places to visit in Albania. There are plenty of great places not far from the city, that you can easily visit: the funky capital Tirana , the impressive Kruja , or the beautiful town Berat, just to name a few. You might even hop across the border and visit Montenegro , Kosovo or North Macedonia !

The best way to travel around on day trips from Durres is by tour (as getting around by public transport might be a bit tricky and can require going to Tirana first). Here are some recommended tours from Durres:

Final thoughts on visiting Durres

Even if Durres isn’t the most exciting place to visit in Albania I must say I enjoyed the time I spent there, despite the gloomy weather. I really liked to ancient remnants scratted around the modern city as well as the funky vibe so unique for Albania.

I would never choose the place for the seaside holidays but for a few hours this is a really interesting city to visit and I hope you will give Durres a chance too!

Things to do in Durres Albania

Durrës is a port city located on the Adriatic Sea in western Albania. The city is known for its port, beach, and historical sites.

The best things to do in Durrës are to visit its beach, the Venetian Tower of Durrës, and the Roman amphitheater, amongst other things.

Table of Contents

What are The Best Things to Do in Durrës Albania?

The best things to do in Durrës Albania are the following things.

1. Visit Durrës Beach

Durrës Beach

Durrës Beach (“Plazhi i Durrësit”) is the most popular and one of the most extensive beaches in Albania. Its length is 10 km (6.2 mi).

This beach is popular as Durrës is close to Tirana (37.8 km (23.4 mi) / 40 minutes away), and people living in Tirana visit the beach during the weekend or summer.

The Durrës beach sea bottom is shallow, perfect for kids and families. You can walk into the sea for 10-20 meters without having your bottom parts (legs) covered in water. This allows kids to play inside the water.

There are a few public beaches where you can use your own umbrella and sunbeds, but they are small compared to private beaches. There are many private beaches where you can rent an umbrella for the day ($5-10 per day).

On the beach, there are many sports activities, such as volleyball beach, and water activities such as renting a jet ski, paddle boat, or large boat.

2. Visit the Venetian Tower of Durrës

Venetian Tower of Durrës

Durrës Castle (or Venetian Tower of Durrës) is one small tower surrounded by a small wall. The architecture and the park of the castle are great for the eye so it’s worth visiting it.

On top of the castle is a bar with an amazing view of the city. The stairs will lead you to the coffee upstairs. In front of the castle is a cannon that you can take pictures of.

In summary, the Durrës Castle is a great place to visit as it’s close to the old city. It’s not a large castle, so visit only if you are nearby and want to take some pictures.

Address: “8C5W+VQ8, Durrës, Albania”. Opening Hours: The castle is open 24 Hours / The Bar: 08:00-00:00. Entrance Fee: Free.

3. Visit Durrës Amphitheatre

Durrës Amphitheatre

The Durrës Amphitheatre is a Roman amphitheater located in the center of the city and can hold up to 15,000-20,000 spectators.

This amphitheater was built in the 2nd century B.C. and was discovered in 1966 by Vangjel Toçi. It was declared the most endangered cultural heritage site in Europe in 2013. It’s a real Roman amphitheater and a piece of history.

In the Durrës Amphitheatre, you can see the same walls and stairs from more than 2,000 years ago. The best part of this amphitheater is the ancient mosaics on the walls.

Unfortunately, the amphitheater isn’t well maintained, there’s a lot of grass, and there is no written information or guides. However, if you are a true fan of history, it’s a must-visit place.

Visit the Durrës Amphitheater if you want to see a real Roman amphitheater built more than 2,000 ago.

Address: 8C6W+V2M, Rruga Kalase, Durrës, Albania Opening Hours: April-September (Everyday): 09:00-18:00 / October-March: 09:00-16:30. Entrance Fee: 300 Lek (ALL) / ($3).

4. Visit the Durrës Small Theme Parks

There are two theme parks in Durrës. One small theme park is inside the beach, close to “Pista e Madhe (Iliria)” which consists of a few games such as bumper cars, a giant wheel, and a boxing machine.

The other theme park is inside “Shëtitorja Vollga”, in front of the “Venetian Tower of Durrës”. This theme park consists of different games, including a giant wheel and a pirate ship.

Each game cost 100 Lek (ALL) / $1 to play. You need to buy a few coupons and give one coupon to the worker next to the game/machine before playing.

Theme Park 1 Address: “Pista e Madhe, Durrës”. Theme Park 2 Address: “8C5V+X4W, Durrës 2000, Albania” / At the being for the square, approximately in front of the “Venetian Tower of Durrës” Entrance Fee: Free / Each ride costs 100 Lek ($1).

5. See King Zog’s Palace

The King Zog’s Palace (or the Royal Villa of Durrës) served as a summer residence for Ahmed Zogu (ex-Albanian King).

The palace is located on the hill of Durrës, 98 m above sea level, and you can see the sea from three (3) sides of the palace.

It used to be the most luxurious palace in Albania before it was destroyed in 1998 by rioters. The palace was renovated in 2007.

Today, the palace is in bad condition, but it’s still great to see how the King of Albania was supposed to live during summer (although you can’t enter the villa). Also, the view from the mountain (where the palace is located) is great.

Note: As of now, you aren’t allowed to get inside the palace/villa. But, it’s still worth climbing up there because of the view.

6. Walk in Vollga, Durrës

“Shëtitorja Vollga” is a large promenade park in the city of Durrës (located near the Durrës Castle) that is perfect for strolling or getting a coffee while enjoying the view of the beach.

This promenade park consists of a large paved road with a few benches to sit on, a few coffee bars, a few palm trees, a small football concrete field, a small theme park, a large concrete boardwalk, and a view of the beach.

During the evening, the “Shëtitorja Vollga” promenade park is full of people walking, taking pictures, or enjoying a drink in the coffee bars. It’s a great place to visit with kids and families.

Address: “8C5V+X4W, Durrës 2000, Albania”

7. Visit Durrës Archaeological Museum

Durrës Archaeological Museum is the largest and most visited museum in Albania. It holds more than 2,000 objects from the prehistoric era to the 4th century A.D.

Durrës Archaeological Museum shows three (3) historical periods in chronological order; the Prehistory, Hellenistic, and Roman Period.

In the museum, you can see different artifacts such as bronze axes and hammers that confirm Durrës as one of the oldest cities in the Mediterranean. You can also see fragments of different figurines, old coins made in the Dyrrachium, and underwater finds such as ship anchors.

All the artifacts are labeled in Albanian and English. It will take you approximately 60-90 minutes to explore the whole museum.

Address: “Rruga Taulantia, Durrës” Opening Hours: November-April: (Tuesday-Sunday) 08:00-16:00. May-October (Everyday): 08:00-16:00. Entrance Fee: 400 Lek (ALL) / ($4).

8. Go to Spille Beach Kavajë

Spille Beach Kavajë

Spille Beach is located in Spille Village, 41.5 km away from Durrës. Compared to the Durrës Beach, Spille Beach is quieter, cheaper, and cleaner.

There aren’t large crowds in Spille Beach even during the peak season in Albania as most people don’t know about this place.

The prices of the food, accommodation, and sunbeds are cheaper than in Durrës. It costs 5€ ($5) to rent an umbrella (with 2 sunbeds) for one (1) day in Spille beach.

The water is much cleaner, but the beach and the village aren’t as clean. The area isn’t well-developed but its beach is good, very quiet, and a perfect place to relax.

Visit Spille Beach if you want to avoid large crowds, pay less for a better beach, and enjoy time with your family. The beach is large and wide, so there’s lots of space for kids to play.

Note: The nightlife in Spille Beach isn’t as great. There are only a few bars you can go to.

Address: Spille, Durrës. Beach: Public / Private

9. Go to Shkëmbi i Kavajës Beach

Shkëmbi i Kavajës Beach

Visit “Shkëmbi i Kavajës” beach if you want to avoid large crowds but still want to meet locals. The beach is located 10.2 km away from the Durrës city center.

Compared to Durrës Beach, “Shkëmbi i Kavajës” beach has fewer crowds (although it is still full), costs less money, and has a large space to walk or place.

There are a few public beaches (although they are small and fill up quickly), and lots of private beaches where you can rent an umbrella with sunbeds. The price for an umbrella with 2 sunbeds for one (1) day is 7€ ($7.5), but the prices change every year.

“Shkëmbi i Kavajës” beach is great for families with kids (as there’s a lot of space for kids to play) and for people who enjoy strolling. Most visitors are locals with families with kids.

Compared to the “Spille Beach”, the “Shkëmbi i Kavajës” beach has more crowds and is more expensive. But, the nightlife is more vibrant as the area is well-developed.

Note: You can walk from the Durrës beach to the “Shkëmbi i Kavajës” beach as they are connected. But, the distance might be too large depending on where you are staying.

10. Walk in the “Bulevardi Dyrrah, Durrës”

Bulevardi Dyrrah, Durrës

“Bulevardi Dyrrah” is located in the Durrës city center, 6.5 km (4 mi) away from the Durrës beach. It’s a straight paved road (for cars) with large pedestal roads (on both sides).

On both sides of the roads, there are multiple local businesses that you can visit such as coffee bars, ice cream shops, restaurants, fast food, etc. It’s a great place to visit during the nighttime.

It’s close to the “Sheshi Iliria Durrës”, a large square filled with a few large palm trees, water fountains, and local businesses. A great place to take pictures.

Address: “Bulevardi Dyrrah, Durrës”.

11. Enjoy the Nightlife

Nightlife

Durrës has a vibrant nightlife during its peak season (June-September). The bars and clubs are full (especially during July) as there are lots of tourists in the city.

Compared to the Tirana Nightlife , Durrës doesn’t have as many nightclubs, but it has lots of bars.

The bars we recommend to visit in Durrës are the following.

  • Posh Lounge.
  • Illyrian Garden.
  • Gintoneria Cocktail Bar.
  • ZINS Durrës.

12. Visit Tirana

Tirana

Tirana (the capital city of Albania) is 37.8 km (23.4 mi) away from Durrës. It takes approximately 40 minutes to go to Tirana from Durrës using the SH2 road.

The best things to do in Tirana are to visit Mount Dajti, Skanderbeg Square, Grand Park, and the Pyramid of Tirana.

Guide to Durres – Things to do and places to see

Guide to Durres Albania feature

Durres is about an hour’s drive from Tirana and also the closest beach from the capital. But besides the long stretch of beach, the coastal city also has a rich past with several Roman remains and other ancient constructions that can be visited.

After spending a few days in Tirana, visiting Durres is one of the easiest and most interesting things to do in Albania . Durres was an important ancient port and was first founded by the Greek in the 7th century BC. It then became part of the Roman Empire in the 3rd century BC and it grew and expanded as a key naval and military base.

Roman Amphitheatre of Durres

After the city walls were destroyed in an earthquake in the 4th century, they were rebuilt thicker than ever and subsequently rebuilt several more times and some parts still stand today. When the Western Roman Empire fell, the city continued under Byzantine rule.

The Middle Ages brought a lot of instability to Durres and while the city continued to be an important strategic enclave, this only meant it was attacked by pretty much anyone, from nobles to Slavs, Venetians, Albanians, and eventually, the Ottomans who gained control of Durres in the 16th century.

Under Ottoman rule the city declined and lost its population and its earlier importance. Sadly, a lot of the original Roman, Venetian and Ottoman constructions were left to time and have yet to be fully restored so visiting Durres is like going back in time .

Outside weekends and summer months, the city center is very quiet, and you might find yourself alone inside the main sights, even in early September we were the only ones.

There are also tours of Durres that come with a professional guide so you can explore the ancient sites with a knowledgable informant. Depending on how much time you have to spare, you can either go on a 5 hour guided tour or a 10 hour guided tour that also includes a delicious wine tasting.

Looking for an online guide on what to see in Durres? Let’s take a look at one of the most interesting cities to visit in Albania. And then go on exploring the rest of the continent in this epic European Road Trip Guide .

Roman Amphitheatre of Durres

Roman Amphitheatre of Durres up close

The 2th century Roman Amphitheatre of Durres is perhaps the city’s most notable of all the tourist attractions and the largest in the Balkans. It has also been submitted for inclusion into Albania’s UNESCO site list .

Together with Apollonia and Butrint, this is one of the oldest constructions in the country but also one of the more recently discovered.

The entrance to the basement of the amphitheatre

While there are amphitheatres and theatres in lots of places around the world, for example in Tarragona which is an easy day trip from Barcelona , the one in Durres is interesting because of its location right in the middle of the city, surrounded by apartment blocks. This is because it was only discovered in 1966 by archeologist Vangjel Toci.

Frescoes inside the Byzantine church of the Roman Amphitheatre of Durres

The amphitheatre is compared to the most famous ones of antiquity and was built in an elliptical shape measuring more than 120m long and accommodating between 15,000 and 18,000 spectators.

The theatre, like all the others of the time, was used to showcase gladiator and slave tournaments between themselves and against beasts. Spectators would sit in the audience and watch the gruesome fights to death.

Mosaics inside the Byzantine church of the Roman Amphitheatre of Durres

Without any risk to your life, today you can pay a ticket entrance and then walk underneath the half of the structure that remains above the ground and has been excavated. A part of the amphitheatre is underground, covered in layers of soil, and about half has not survived the passing of time and crumbled into oblivion.

Interior Roman Amphitheatre of Durres

One of the most interesting things to see in Durres are the remains of mosaic murals that have been preserved and are behind locked bars. They depict saints and angels. These were part of a 5th century AD church which was built to host Christian ceremonies.

The walls of Durres

The Sea Gate to Durres

Outside the amphitheatre you can’t miss a visit to the Durres Castle also referred to as the Durres walls or Byzantine walls , which surround the city and you will most likely have to pass under on your way to the ampitheatre.

These walls were erected when the city was founded and were expanded as it grew. Today’s walls were built during the Byzantine rule in the 5th and 6th century AD after the 4th century earthquake.

The walls were originally a row of three and had a perimeter of 3.5km, were 3.5m thick and a height of 18m. When the city fell into Ottoman control in the 16th century the walls and the entire city were reduced significantly to a sixth of its Byzantine size. Two entrances to the castle were left, the Sea Gate and the Great Gate.

The Venetian Tower

The Venetian Tower of Durres

Part of the walls are the remains of a large Venetian Tower which stands 9m tall and wide at one corner near the beach. The walls originally had square towers every 60m but the existing tower was built during the Venetian Republic and is round with walls almost 4m thick.

Today, it houses a bar and restaurant called Torre Venciane with seating both on the ground floor terrace, inside as well as on top of the tower, probably the most scenic in the country.

Inside, sofas are set in the walls storage spaces that used to hold ammunition in case of attack, it’s all dim lighting and medieval atmosphere. There are also nights with live music. But the outdoor rooftop terrace is the best place. Even in the summer months, there are umbrellas for shade.

Other things to do in Durres

The Roman Bathhouse

Durres’ rich past also means there are a lot of other things to see. Among the most important is the Durres Archaeological Museum , which is filled with all the objects discovered during the excavations in and around Durres.

You can also look out for the remains of the 5th century Byzantine forum where a few of the marble columns are still standing (you cannot get close but can only see it from outside the fence). And the 2nd century AD bathhouse which lies below the Palace of Culture.

Byzantine forum for Durres

For a break, sit at the main town square or have a drink at hip and colorful Oborri Lounge where you can relax in a shaded area under many trees in colorful cushions and nice music.

A bit removed from downtown, you can find the Royal Villa, also known as Zog’s Villa , the country’s only 20th century king. The villa is located up on a hill and it is quite a steep walk to get there, so you decide whether you prefer to drive.

Oborri Lounge

The villa was used as a guest house by the Communist Regime’s Enver Hoxha and then pilfered during the civil unrest in 1977 but can still be visited.

Durres Beach

Last but not least, Durres is best known for the beach , which is long, sandy and closest to Tirana, making it one of the most popular beaches in Albania . Unlike the beautiful crystalline waters of the southern beaches in Albania, this is more of a functional escape, but still pretty popular for its proximity to the city.

Durres beach is shallow and very long, measuring almost 10km, so there is a big chance you can get a spot, although it does get incredibly crowded in the summer.

You will find all sorts of facilities here, from the omnipresent umbrellas and sun loungers, to bars and ambulant sellers offering you anything and everything under the sun, literally.

5 Best Things to Do in Durres Albania

  • Author david
  • Date September 30th, 2020

Located on the Adriatic Sea coast of Albania, just a 38-kilometer drive from the capital city, Tirana, is the port city of Durrës. A beautiful and ancient seaport, Durrës’ captivating and interesting history dates back to the 7 th century BC.

During that time, Hellenistic colonists from Corinth and Corfu founded the city—then called Epidamnos—on land claimed by the Illyrian Taulantii. Epidamnos, later called Dyracchium, became an important part of the Roman and Byzantine Empires.

It connected the city with Constantinople via the Via Egnatia, just one of the many best things to do in Durres Albania.

durres beach

Durrës still boasts several reminders of its long history, which also includes time under Bulgarian, Venetian, and Ottoman rule. The city briefly served as the capital of the short-lived Principality of Albania from the end of the First Balkan War in 1913 until the Albanian Republic was established in 1925. The city also enjoyed a surge of growth during the Communist era from 1942 to 1992.

Today, Durrës is a sunny and mesmerizing seaside city that makes a fantastic day trips from Tirana. During my time in Albania’s second-largest city in August of 2020, I got to explore more of the country’s food and rich culture with my friend Ani from Balkan Pearls Tour Operator, thanks in part to the wonderful people at Rental Car Albania.

durres albania visit

My inner history buff was also pleased, as several relics from Durrës’ past still stand alongside the city’s more modern buildings. And I haven’t even mentioned the incredible winery and resort in the area. Durrës is my kind of city, and I’m sure it will be yours, too. These are 5 things you must see and do in Durrës, Albania.

Visit the Venetian Tower and Roman-Byzantine Walls

durres castle

Albania is a country that is rich in stunning historical and archaeological sites. Some of its most important are located right in the middle of Durrës! Located along the street just minutes from the city’s port is the breathtaking Venetian Tower . The tower is actually part of the larger Fortress of Durrës, a fortification built during the R oman and Byzantine eras Empire. However, it’s known as the Venetian Tower because the Venetians reinforced it before the Ottoman conquest.

durres albania visit

While much of the Fortress of Durrës or D urres Castle is in ruin, pieces of its ancient walls still stand in this section of the city. These walls have been built, destroyed, and reconstructed many times in their history. During my visit, the walls were undergoing another restoration to repair damage following an earthquake that struck the city in November of 2019.

Eat Albanian Seafood at Bar Restorant Ferra Shijak

durres albania visit

When you’re in a Mediterranean city, you would be remiss if you didn’t have some fresh seafood. Some of the tastiest seafood in town can be found at Bar Restorant Ferra Shijak on the boardwalk.

durres albania visit

From the moment you enter, the aroma of fresh and cooking seafood teases your nostrils. You’ll find everything from shrimp to mussels to crab to several different types of fish on ice! And when you order, you really can’t go wrong. I recommend the seafood linguine, steamed mussels, crudo shrimp, crudo octopus, grilled and fried fish, and bruschetta.

Seafood Linguine

durres albania visit

As someone with Italian heritage who has visited Italy countless times in my life, I don’t say this lightly. The seafood linguine is some of the best I have ever eaten. It’s loaded with fresh squid, shrimp, and mussels, which are coated in a creamy and tangy sauce.

durres albania visit

I also highly recommend trying the crudo. I’ve always been an adventurous eater, so raw fish is no biggie for me. Even if you’ve never had it before, I suggest giving it a try. The raw shrimp and octopus chunks are marinated in a simple lemon and oil dressing that is basic yet explosive in flavor. I couldn’t get enough of the way the citrusy marinade coated my tongue, letting the succulent meat slip effortlessly down my throat. It is downright orgasmic!

Fish and Mussels

durres albania visit

You must also try the meaty baked fish and the crispy fried fish—just be careful of the bones, as there are many of them. But the other dish I must recommend is the steamed mussels. For just 400 lekes, or roughly $4 USD, you can get a massive plate of these mouthwatering morsels. I downed about twenty of them in a row. They’re absolutely addicting, especially when you try them with the briny broth at the bottom of the platter. There’s a reason why eating here is one of the best things you can see and do in Durrës, Albania! It’s outstanding!

Explore the Amphitheatre of Durrës

durres albania visit

As you explore the remains of the Fortress of Durrës’ walls, you’ll come across an archway that leads to a site adjacent to the city’s port. This grand but weathered site is the magnificent Amphitheatre of Durrës , arguably one of the most notable and largest archaeological museum  and sites in the Balkan region. The amphitheatre stands alongside modern homes and buildings, but it dates back to the second century AD, when it was built by Emperor Trajan. However, the amphitheatre wasn’t unearthed until 1966!

durres albania visit

The amphitheatre features worn, stone stands that encircle a round, grassy area. Below ground are some of the original stairs and some low-slung, interconnected hallways. There is also a wide tunnel with high ceilings, which was used as an entrance by the emperor, who would arrive at the the amphitheatre via his chariot.

durres albania visit

I’ve visited amphitheatres throughout the world, but I was struck by this one’s unique history and tourist attractions . In the 5 th century, the emperor at the time shut down the gladiatorial fights held there and converted the amphitheatre into a church. The graves of members of the church are located in the central grassy area

interesting statues

When you explore the tunnels below the stands, you’ll find the remains of a chapel and a well. You’ll also see some beautiful mosaics. I suggest exploring the tunnels and then climbing up to the street above the amphitheatre to get the best views. As you explore, you’ll notice areas that have clearly been restored, but I preferred the worn, weathered look of the original stone. It gave me a better sense of its history, making it one of my favorite things you must see and do in Durrës, Albania!

Tour Kantina Skënderbëu Winery

durres albania visit

When I travel, it’s always important for me to immerse myself in the local culture. That means eating local dishes, learning the local customs, and indulging in their alcoholic beverages. As a longtime wine lover, I was excited to learn that the Albanian tradition of wine-making is on full display at Gjergj Kastrioti Skënderbëu Winery, also known as Kantina Skënderbëu Winery.

durres albania visit

This facility is the largest and oldest winery in Albania and features an expansive property that produces wine from both native and international grapes. The winery, which was privatized in 2001, is a multiple award-winner and also makes a number of types of brandy. They also produce raki, or rakija, which is a special type of fruit brandy that is popular throughout the Balkans and has many different varieties.

durres albania visit

Inside the winery’s basement, you can try some of their five-year-old brandy poured from taps in the walls. It’s nice and smooth and is aged in different oak barrels depending on the flavors and aroma they want. Touring the winery is certainly among the things you must see and do in Durrës, Albania, but the experience doesn’t end there!

durres albania visit

To have a complete Kantina Skënderbëu Winery experience in Durrës, you must take the time to visit their nearby resort, Vinea Resort & SPA. And even though it’s owned by a winery, it’s family-friendly.

durres albania visit

Taking a tour of the resort is a must. Like most places I visited in Albania, they grow their own produce. Everything you eat there is farm-to-table and as fresh as can be. As you explore the grounds, sample some of their sweet figs.

Don’t be shy about trying the different varieties of grapes growing in their 45-hectare vineyard! I recommend the yellow chardonnay grapes and the reddish Negromaro, which they use to make a wonderful rosé.

You can, of course, enjoy dinner and a wine tasting there. While their beef sausage, veal fërgesë, liver-and-kidney tava, and veal with tomato sauce were unbelievable, the real treat is the wine. I recommend their dark, full-bodied primitivo and the earthy shesh i zi.

They also have a dry and fruity rose and a velvety five-year-old premium brandy. I also recommend the muscat grape rakija, which is light, sweet, and the perfect way to end a meal! Trying it is definitely one of the top things to see and do in Durrës, Albania!

durres albania visit

I spent less than a day in Durrës, but the memories I made there will last me a lifetime. Whether I was toasting with the employees at the winery or joking in Italian with the cooks at the restaurant, there was one constant: I felt like I was home. The people of Durrës made me feel like I was family right away. It lasted from the moment I arrived to the second I left. It’s just another reason why I fell head-over-heels for Albania during my two-week adventure there. The people make the place, and for me, they made it one I can’t wait to visit again. Book a trip to Albania today to experience the amazing people and hospitality of Durrës today!

How to Spend a Day in Durrës, Albania

The Great Mosque of Durrës

Durrës is the second-largest town of Albania, after the capital city Tirana and the first port of the country. Located on the Adriatic coast, Durrës is a sea town with many things to offers to visitors, including great beaches and unique archaeological landmarks, such as the largest amphitheater of the Balkan Peninsula. If you have time, while you are in Tirana, don’t miss the chance to spend a day in Durrës – here are the best ways to enjoy your time in this ancient Albanian town.

Known in the ancient times as Dyrrachion, an important Roman settlement, Durrës is one of the oldest towns on the Adriatic shore. If you think that the city has to offer only great beaches and a vibrant nightlife, you are wrong. Durrës is home to the largest amphitheater of the Balkans , and several archaeological exhibits are spread throughout the entire town as well as in the Archaeological Museum . Established in 1951, visit this important museum, the largest in the country, and admire unique pieces of history – after you’ve gotten yourself some breakfast in the city centre of course

After a lunch at Piazza , one of the best fish restaurants in town, get ready to explore the beautiful amphitheater hidden behind the port. The theatre was built in the 2nd century AD, used as a performance location until the 4th century AD, with a capacity of 20,000 people. From there, visit the surrounding area which sports plenty of beautiful street art painted by local and international artists. Then reach Bulevardi Epidamn, the main street of Durrës and admire the Great Mosque of Durrës. Most Albanians, especially the inhabitants of Tirana, come to Durrës for its beaches , with golden sand and safe swimming, ideal for families with children. As you can imagine, in the summer months, these beaches are very crowded, but off peak season, the sea is still warm enough to swim in.

After a long day at the beach, and after the visits to the historical landmarks, you’ll have totally earned a great dinner to end your day in Durrës. The city is full of plenty of great restaurants , but if you have to choose one, the best is Ventus , a fancy and elegant restaurant located on the recently renewed harbor. Try the fish tartar and seafood linguine, two of the best options on the menu, and admire the beautiful sea panorama from your table on the terrace.

Durrës is known to be one of the liveliest towns of the country. The nightlife is vibrant, with restaurants, bars, nightclubs open late. Many beach clubs located on the coast host DJs from Albania and other Balkan countries throughout the summer months, from June to September. If you love dance, enjoy good music and drink great cocktails, head into Cinco Cavalli Summer Club , one of the largest clubs of Albania.

What not to miss?

Wide beaches.

Most of the tourists come to Durrës for the beaches. They are sandy and wide with clear water. In the city you can find a 10 km long beach so surely you will find your spot. Nearby there are also a lot of bars, coffee shops, and restaurants so you can fully enjoy them without any worries. In the city of Durrës, you can easily find beaches but if one day you want to explore more wild ones you can still do it easily - just go outside the city.

What to visit in Durrës?

The wide and long path stretches along the beach. Surrounded by many restaurants, coffee shops, and tourist attractions. It’s perfect for a walk in the morning and after a whole day spent on the beach or after a great dinner in a local restaurant. We also suggest walking on the promenade during sunset time when the colors are the most beautiful.

What to visit in Durrës?

Amphitheater

The most important historic monument of the city. The evidence of the rich and turbulent history of Durrës. The city was founded by the Greeks in VII B. C. E. and over the centuries was under the rule of Romans and later Venetians. During the Roman years at the beginning of the II century, the Amphitheater was built by order of Emperor Traianus. Venetian tower

What to visit in Durrës?

Before the earthquake in 1273 in Durrës there was a Byzantine castle but today we can only see its architectural fragments and ruins. In the 15th century at the place of the Byzantine tower Venetians who were rulers of the city built on the remains of the previous building their round-shaped Venetian tower which we can visit nowadays. This piece of history represents the rich past of the city. The Byzantine Empire made Durrës the most fortified city in the Adriatic sea and later was an important region of the Venetian Republic. Now at the top of the tower, we can not only learn about the history but also drink a coffee and relax because there is located a lovely coffee shop with a great view of the sea.

Residence of King Zog I

The House of Zogu also known as the Royal Villa of Durrës was built in 1937 on the highest hill of the city and was used as a summer house for Royal Family. The architectural style that it represents is neoclassicism and the project was made by the Albanian architect Kristo Sotiri. The Royal Palace is a piece of history and also a very interesting building which is worth visiting. On the front facade, we can see the low relief of the president of Albania - Gjergj Kastrioti Skënderbeu. From the residence, you can admire the view of the city and the sea.

The Fatih Mosque

What to visit in Durrës?

The mosque was built in 1502 and comes from the times of the rule of the Ottoman Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror. It’s the oldest Albanian Islamic temple and a very important cultural monument - in 1973 was added to the official list of Albanian culture’s important monuments. It was closed due to the communist dictatorship and its minaret was torn down. Later it was rebuilt in a way simpler way when the communist authorities left the city. It’s located close to the Durrës promenade so it’s very easy to locate and visit.

What else to visit?

If you are looking for wide and sandy beaches Golem is a place to go. It’s a small and calm town in the south of Durrës. There is located Plazhi i Gjeneralit - a very lovely beach. You find there a lot of paid sunbeds with umbrellas but also the spacious free zone where you can just lay down on the sand. The sand there is soft and the water crystal clear. It’s the perfect spot for those who need a full day of relaxation.

What to visit in Durrës?

Cape of Rodon

Located around 50 km from Durrës, the Cape of Rodon is definitely a place to visit. Beautiful wild nature will leave you speechless. But this little, hilly peninsula that extends deeper into the Adriatic Sea is not only about the landscape but also a few important historical and cultural monuments of Albania. The cape is known for the location of the Skanderbeg Castle which was built around the year 1450. Its important function was to allow a quick exit to the Adriatic Sea in the event of an Ottoman invasion. The castle was already destroyed in 1467 by Turks but in 1500 was reconstructed by Venetians who already had the region under their rule. Near the cape, you can also find the St. Anthony Church which was built at the same time as the castle. This Romanesque-gothic sanctuary hides beautiful frescoes inside and other precious pieces. Thanks to its location the panorama surrounding the church is really breathtaking.

How to travel there?

To get to Durrës the easiest way is to take a plane to the capital city of Tirana which is located only around 35 km from the destination. Most airlines are operating flights there and you can easily find cheap ones. Once you get to the airport you can take a taxi or bus (5 €) that will take you in 30-40 minutes to Durrës.

Also one of the best options is to come by car . As Albania has a land connection it is a great idea to make Durrës one of the Balkan road trip points. With a car, you can easily reach every important place in Albania and also explore the coast and its less known beaches.

It is also possible to come to Durrës by bus but definitely more complicated - depending on where is your starting point. If you want to travel by bus you should prepare yourself for a lot of changes which may be fun if you stay and visit other cities that offer you a connection.

Another great option to discover Albania in a very adventurous but convenient way is to book a trip with Good Albania . They offer different kinds of tours that let you explore this country in the best way possible. You should check them out because their service is very professional with great local knowledge!

When to travel there?

As Durrës is a summer resort that offers great beaches the best time is to go there during the hot months - starting in June and finishing in mid of September. At that time you can be sure it’s going to be sunny and you will have the best out of your vacation there.

Average costs

The Albanian currency is LEK but EURO is also widely accepted. However, you should know that cash is a way more popular method of payment than a card. Albania is still one of the cheapest countries in Europe but as Durrës is a summer resort the prices are higher than in other cities. Anyway, it is still considered a “cheap travel destination”. For a night in a hotel, you will pay 50-150 € for two persons depending on the standard but 50€ is already a very good one. In a restaurant, you will pay for a great seafood meal around 10€, and for pasta or risotto around 5-10€. Good pizza you can get for less than 5€. For a glass of local wine, you will pay 3€ and the popular street food like byrek you can buy only for 0,50€. Although you should also remember that in Albania it is very common to leave a tip - also even when you are buying just one espresso.

What to eat?

What to visit in Durrës?

In Durrës, you should try their fresh seafood. You can find a lot of great pasta or risotto with various seafood that is not worse than in Italy! Also very popular is to eat fried calamari, shrimps, octopus, etc. They are always fresh and delicious. Don’t miss it when visiting the Albanian coast.

The Balkan street food classic that you can also easily find in Durrës. Philo cake stuffed with spinach, meat, or vegetables is a must-try. It is also a great snack to take with you on the beach. It’s small but filling and most important - super tasty!

What to visit in Durrës?

Minced meat and rice rolled in wine leaf. Small but amazing pieces are cooked for a long time. You can find them easily in restaurants when you will be searching for good local food.

Perime zgare

A mix of grilled vegetables like bell pepper, eggplant, and zucchini. Finley grilled, poured with olive oil and balsamic vinegar. Very light and simply tasty - perfect for summer dinner’s appetizer.

Beaches of Durres

durres albania visit

City beaches are flat sandy, with a shallow and long entrance to the sea. You have to walk about 100 meters, or even more, to take a dip. But the sea is well heated, the water is markedly warmer than in neighboring Montenegro. Lovers of thrills will not appreciate it, but if you have a holiday with small children, then this resort is for you. And it’s not just because the sea is comfortable for children: Durres has a developed infrastructure for young tourists. There are enough attractions, playgrounds, and water slides. Some hotels in Durres offer, in addition, children’s animation.

For a comfortable beach holiday, we recommend a wide beach 16 km long, it starts after Plepa. Also Schkembi, Mali and Robit, Cherret, wonderful places to relax. There are conifers, good for allergy sufferers. The air is clean and there is no road between the houses and the beach.

The water temperature by the beginning of July usually comes to 29 degrees, thanks to the shallow bay. Moreover, swimming is not shallow, three steps and up to the neck for example in Shkembi, then a little walk and shallow.

Durres sights

Durres is worth breaking away from its beaches and delving deeper into the center of the city. The second largest and most important city in Albania (after Tirana), Durres emerged about 2,600 years ago. Over the years it has been conquered by so many, and thanks to this (and sometimes in spite of it) today it is the richest city in the country. The multilayered cultural heritage of Durres comes together in one bizarre, kaleidoscopic picture.

It is worth visiting the half-preserved amphitheater (dated II century BC) with early Christian mosaics on its wall. Have a coffee at the bar in the Venetian Tower and touch the remains of the defensive walls. See fragments of Roman thermae, next to which modern apartment buildings quietly coexist. Visit one of the oldest mosques in Albania, Fatih Mosque. To experience the revered spirit of St. Paul’s and Astiia churches.

Durres in the early twentieth century, it even managed to be the capital of Albania. There are many monuments of different eras preserved here. Amphitheater for gladiatorial fights of Roman times, the ruins of the fortress with defensive towers – Byzantine and Venetian, the royal villa of Ahmet Zogu – times of formation of independent Albania in the XX century.

1. Amphitheater in Durres

durres albania visit

The Durrese Amphitheater in Durrese is certainly one of the greatest monuments of ancient architecture in Albania, if not in the Balkans. It was built in 100 AD by Hadrian and was only discovered in the 1960s. It was in use for about 300 years and could then hold 20,000 spectators. This huge scale is part of what makes this site special, but archaeologists are also intrigued by how the building demonstrates the Romans’ transition to Christianity. There is a chapel at this site with stunning wall mosaics of saints showing how the amphitheater found religious purpose in later life.

2. Ruins of the fortress with defensive towers

durres albania visit

This monument consists of one tower and a wall and is referred to in many guidebooks as the Tower of Venice. It comes from the 400s, during the reign of the Byzantine Emperor Anastasios I, who was born in this city. Since its founding, Durres Castle has survived serious operations, fortified by the Venetians shortly before the Turks took over the city. In 1939, the Castle was a base for a twisted group of Albanian patriots trying to delay the development of the Italian army. About 360 locals succeeded until Italian armored units landed in the port and took the city.

3. Royal Villa Durres

durres albania visit

The Albanian monarchy, which lasted from 1928 to 1939, was decommissioned for more than seven decades, but this hilltop structure in Durres is an interesting reminder of that era. The Royal Villa is now abandoned, but has a fascinating history. It was built in 1937 for King Zog I, who lived here for only a year. After the dissolution of the monarchy, the villa became a huge communist reception building where Nikita Khrushchev and Jimmy Carter were received on official visits. When temporary civil unrest broke out in Albania in 1997, the villa was looted and has remained unchanged ever since.

4. Archaeological Museum

durres albania visit

The largest archaeological museum in Albania, here you can see which civilizations that inhabited the region were left behind. It is only a few steps from the seafront and was founded in 1951, with collections covering all periods from ancient Illyrian culture to the Roman era, Byzantine times and Ottoman rule. The Roman objects are particularly intriguing and include miniature busts of Venus and stone sarcophagi. The museum as an institution has a history of its own, as it was looted during the 1997 riots and has only recently been restored.

5. Byzantine Forum

durres albania visit

In the center of Durres is a modest but evocative collection of colonnades that formed the Macellum Forum after the Roman era. It dates from the 600s and 800s and is paved with excavated marble stones. You can get up close to the Corinthian columns in the forum to see the beautiful details of the stonework. At some point a statue of every Byzantine emperor in power at the time must have stood in the center of the square. Next to the forum are the Roman thermal baths of Durres, which were discovered along with the amphitheater in the 1960s. What remains is a hypocaust and a swimming pool measuring five by seven.

6. Mosques of Durres

durres albania visit

There are two impressive mosques in Durres, as Albania’s relationship with religion was broken during the communist era, and each place of worship has its own history. The Great Mosque is the younger of the two buildings, built in 1931 by King Zog I on the site of an earlier Ottoman building. After 1967, its minaret was destroyed and the building was used as a center for local youth organizations. The Fatih Mosque, built in 1503 in the early decades of Turkish rule, is smaller and much older. It was also closed during the Communist era, but was declared a cultural monument in Albania in the 1970s.

“Little Rome.” So often this Balkan resort is called. And not without reason. Very intricately intertwined in Durres ancient monuments, medieval Italian buildings and ultra-modern buildings.

If the Albanian flavor of the holiday is not enough, go to Italy. There are ferry connections between Durres and a number of Italian resorts. The most popular are Bari and Trieste.
