Dolby Theatre

The theatre is equipped with Dolby Atmos ® cinema sound playback—the most natural, lifelike sensory experience available in a cinema. Complete with 215 individually powered loudspeakers, the Dolby Theatre features one of the most sophisticated sound systems in the world.

The theatre is equipped with Dolby Vision ® projection technology—delivering incredible color, a million-to-one contrast ratio, and twice the brightness of standard screens.

We've been working with talented filmmakers to create unforgettable movie experiences for more than 40 years. From the cinema to the living room, Dolby continues to transform the entertainment experience, and the Dolby Theatre reflects our ongoing commitment to help moviemakers realize their visions.

One of the world’s premier entertainment venues, Dolby Theatre has hosted a range of prestigious artists and events including IRIS by Cirque du Soleil, Alicia Keys, Celine Dion, Prince, Elvis Costello, Barry Manilow, Stevie Wonder, Harry Connick, Jr., Melissa Etheridge, Dixie Chicks, Tyler Perry, American Ballet Theatre and various touring Broadway productions.

Notable television and awards events at Dolby Theatre have included the American Idol finals, AFI Lifetime Achievement Awards to Tom Hanks, Meryl Streep, and George Lucas, Daytime Emmy Awards, ESPY Awards and BET Awards.

For the theatergoer, Dolby Theatre experience begins on Hollywood Boulevard, where a towering portal, designed by Rockwell, serves as the grand entrance to the theatre, which is set back from the street. A two-story Awards Walk, featuring backlit glass plaques for each Best Picture Oscar ® winner on a series of limestone portals, leads up a sweeping staircase with red mosaic tile to the main entrance.

The five-level theatre lobby is centered by a grand spiral staircase with cherrywood balustrades, topped by an oval, uplit silvery dome. Certain lobby design elements were inspired by Michelangelo’s Campodiglio in Rome and Busby Berkeley’s choreography. Twenty-six spectacular images of famous Oscar ® winners including Grace Kelly, Jack Nicholson, Marlon Brando, Halle Berry and Julia Roberts are permanently displayed on four lobby levels as photographic transparencies on clear plexiglass hung in front of shimmering beaded “silver screen” panels.

The audience chamber is highlighted by a silver-leafed “tiara”, a striking, looping oval structure that both supports and disguises an immense ceiling grid for lighting. Reflective ribs from the tiara extend down between the theatre’s box seats, creating a continuous flow from wall to ceiling. The chamber was designed to draw attention to the action on the stage, as well as to achieve the maximum intimacy between audience and performers. It is appointed with sumptuous details that give the space warmth including cherrywood finishes and deep plum upholstery, as well as a shimmering glow provided by curtains of two shades of iridescent fabric and a fine bronze mesh that stretches to the top of the proscenium, which measures some 64 feet wide by 35 feet high. The main stage area is one of the largest in the nation, at 120 feet wide and 75 feet deep.

Wolfgang Puck Catering and Events, owned by celebrated chef Wolfgang Puck, is the exclusive provider of food and beverage services for Dolby Theatre, including front of house, backstage and special private events that can be held in the theatre lobbies and the Dolby Lounge.

Guided theatre tours are offered with production and performance schedule exceptions.  Please refer to the Tour Schedule for availability. The walking tour offers visitors architectural and historical highlights of the world-renowned venue, as well as a glimpse of the ultra glamorous side of Dolby Theatre on Hollywood’s biggest night – the Oscars ® .

11 Dramatic Virtual Tours of Stages Around the World

By Google Arts & Culture

A unique theatre (1769) by Antonio Bibiena Teatro Bibiena

All the world's a stage... Step inside some of the most beautiful theaters, concert halls, and opera houses in the world and experience the grandeur and drama of these iconic venues.

The Bolshoi Theater, Moscow The world-famous Bolshoi Theater in Russia was designed by architect Andrei Mikhailov and holds performances of ballet and opera on its dazzling stage. During WW2, to stop the theater from being a target for bombers, the front colonnade of the building was disguised using the set from a classic opera. Explore behind-the-scenes of its costume department, or take a tour of the exterior of the building.

Carnegie Hall, New York City A prestigious venue for both classical and popular music performances, Carnegie Hall in Midtown Manhattan is made up of three auditoriums. There's a famous old joke that nearby the building a pedestrian stopped a musician from the venue and asked, "How do you get to Carnegie Hall?" Without looking up the musician replied, "Practice." Discover the origins of the building or watch a video of The Philadelphia Orchestra performing in 360.

National Theater of Korea, Seoul Opened in 1950, The National Theater of Korea was the first national theater in Asia. It houses four performance groups, including the National Changgeuk Company, which is traditional Korean opera performed as a play, but in a folk song style known as pansori. Discover more about the theater's history and performances, or watch some changgeuk.

Theatro Municipal, São Paulo Situated in Brazil, the Theatro Municipal in São Paulo is mainly constructed from materials imported from Europe, as was the custom when it was built in 1903. The stage decorations didn't arrive in time for the opening night, so its first staged production had to be postponed! Explore what happens backstage or watch a 360 video of Wagner's Lohengrin performed at the theater.

Burgtheatre, Vienna The second-oldest theater in Europe, the Burgtheatre was built in 1741 and was was largely destroyed by bombs and fire in 1945, but has since been fully restored. The extravagantly-painted ceiling of the grand staircase includes early work from Gustav Klimt, and includes his only known self-portrait. Explore the ceiling artwork in detail.

Elbphilharmonie, Hamburg One of the most acoustically advanced concert halls in the world, the Elbphilarmonie has only recently been built, and opened its doors in January 2017. The Grand Hall is designed so that the performers sit in the middle of the audience, and is walled with 10,000 individually shaped plates that disperse the sound waves. Discover how the building was created, go backstage, or watch some if its performers in 360.

The Colosseum, Rome The Colosseum might not be fully in action any longer, but in its time was the site of numerous forms of ancient Roman entertainment, from gladiatorial contests to Classic mythological dramas. Positioned in the middle of Rome, it is the largest amphitheater (open-air venue) ever built. Discover what it looks like from the outside or see a scale model of what it would have looked like when it was in use.

Palacio de Bellas Artes, Mexico City The distinctive Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico is built in a mix of architectural styles, with Art Nouveau dominating the exterior and an Art Deco interior. The inside is decorated with artworks by prominent Mexican muralists, such as Diego Rivera and David Alfaro Siqueiros and the stained glass "curtain" above the stage is a foldable glass panel by Louis Comfort Tiffany. Take a tour of the outside of the building.

Sydney Opera House, Sydney Designed by Danish architect Jørn Utzon, who was chosen as part of an international competition, the Sydney Opera House is a multi-venue performing arts centre that hosts well over 1,500 performances a year. The first person to perform at the Sydney Opera House was Paul Robeson, who sang Ol' Man River to the construction workers as they ate lunch. You can tour one of the venue's stages or discover stories about its design and events.

Teatro Bibiena, Mantua Teatro Bibiena is also known as the "scientific theater" as it was intended to host both theater productions and concerts, and scientific discourses and conventions. Designed by Antonio Galli Bibiena in 1767, a 13-year-old Mozart performed here on its opening night. Explore the painted frescoes or watch a music video filmed here.

Palais Garnier, Paris At first glance, this may not look like something that can be found at one of the most famous opera houses in the world, however you might recognize it if you've ever seen Phantom of the Opera. The Paris Opera House lake resides underneath the foundations of the grandiose building due to the marshy area in which it was built. Take a tour of the magnificent stage, see the view from the roof or watch a performance by the Paris Opera Ballet in 360.

This free tool takes the guesswork out of planning a home theater

Now that we’ve all been cooped up inside for months and it’s entirely possible we’ll continue to do so as the weather starts to turn colder, many of us are contemplating a serious upgrade for our TV rooms.

But no matter how many helpful articles you read about the benefits of surround sound , Dolby Atmos , and making sure you buy a TV that’s the right size for your viewing distance , actually visualizing what your new home theater should look like isn’t always easy.

This reality isn’t lost on Scott Newnam, CEO of Audio Advice , a North Carolina-based retailer and installer of home theater gear. Newnam and his team have spent the last several years developing the Audio Advice Home Theater Designer , an online tool that lets A/V professionals plan out a home theater simply by plugging in a few room dimensions and the desired number of seats.

The calculations that need to happen behind the scenes in order to make such a simple tool work as effortlessly as the Audio Advice Home Theater Designer are considerable — especially when you take into account that it will optimize your space for audio standards like Dolby Atmos , DTS:X, and THX . Newnam’s intent was to recoup that investment by charging people a fee to use the tool.

  • What is MPEG-H? The burgeoning 3D audio standard explained
  • Apple’s AirPods Pro spatial audio turns your iPhone into a movie theater
  • Samsung’s 2020 soundbar lineup adds Dolby Atmos to your TV starting at $700

But then the pandemic happened and Newnam decided to make the tool free to use for anyone. “In a year that is falling short on gifts,” Newnam said in a press release, “this is our gift to anyone who wants to explore a better at-home entertainment experience.”

Newnam demoed the Home Theater Designer for us over a Zoom call — exactly the way a professional installer might do with a client if the client didn’t want to use the tool themselves.

Audio Advice Home Theater Designer

In seconds, you can see a 3D plan for your room including TV, speaker, and seating placement, each one accurately represented in terms of size and distance. But the real fun comes when you start manipulating all of the parameters to see the changes this creates.

You can do this using the series of drop-down menus and sliders on the right side of the display, or you can drag your seating around the space to see what effect this has on things like speaker placements.

Not really sure how it will sound or what it will look like? There are two visualization modes that can help. Sound Dispersion view overlays a series of spotlight patterns emanating from each of your speakers so you can see if your seating area is in the sweet spot or not. Screen Height view puts you in your primary seating position so you can see how big your chosen screen size would feel in terms of your peripheral vision.

At any point, the tool will provide you with a printable summary of your room’s specs, which you can use to measure out all of the items in real life — if you’re inclined to go the do-it-yourself route — or you can use it as a starting point for a conversation with a professional installer.

As a first version, there are some elements that Newnam acknowledges haven’t been addressed, like switching from ceiling speakers to Dolby Atmos-enabled speakers that bounce sound off the ceiling back to the listening position. There’s also no ability to hide in-wall speakers behind a projection screen. Version 2.0 will have these features and others, Newnam said.

He was also quick to point out that if folks had any questions after using the tool and were looking for more guidance, Audio Advice would be more than happy to help.

We immediately saw the value in the Home Theater Designer — especially when dealing with hard-to-visualize concepts like Dolby Atmos — but we were curious what a professional installer thought.

Weshowed the tool to Jeff Gosselin, the owner of Cloud9AV , a Toronto-based home theater and home automation installation company. He was impressed with the tool’s ability to reflect changes in real time. He noted that the results were similar to the kinds of 3D tools employed by interior designers, but that you’d usually only get this sort of presentation if you were embarking on a project with a budget of $50,000.

It’s a great tool for helping clients and DIYers understand how 5.1 and other types of surround sound work, Gosselin pointed out.

At this point, that’s our takeaway as well. Whether you have the budget for a full-blown home theater, or you simply want to understand how you could give yourself much better audio and video in your existing room, it’s worth spending a few minutes playing around with the Audio Advice Home Theater Designer.

It’s a little on the nose, but there are times when Google is the most binary company on the face of the planet. To wit: Google’s branding is either brilliant (see Gmail), or boneheaded (see every messaging permutation ever).

The latest rebranding that doesn’t really matter? Chromecast. Erm, Cast. Actually, Chromecast built-in.

If you're searching for headphone deals, you should be on the lookout for offers involving Bose, which is one of the most popular brands in the audio industry. Best Buy currently has a rare discount that you wouldn't want to miss -- $100 off the Bose QuietComfort noise-canceling headphones, which brings their price down to a more affordable $249 from their sticker price of $349. You're going to have to hurry with your purchase if you're interested though, as the stocks that are up for sale may not last long.

Why you should buy the Bose QuietComfort headphones It's the Bose QuietComfort Ultra that are on top of our list of the best noise-canceling headphones, but you definitely won't regret going for their more affordable version -- the Bose QuietComfort. You'll be missing out on some of the more advanced features such as AptX Adaptive support, but these wireless headphones still provide topnotch active noise cancellation that blocks all external sound, as well as an Aware Mode that will let you hear what's going on around you without having to take them off.
