With eclectic influences, Disco Biscuits are a jam band different to the rest, incorporating jazz and electronica influences, fusing techno and trance alongside the usual mix of rock, soul and blues.

Formed in 1995, the members of Disco Biscuits, Jon “the Barber” Gutwillig (guitar), Marc Brownstein (bass), Aron Magner (keyboards, synth) and Allen Aucoin (drums), met whilst they were attending the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, US. After playing at college parties, the band soon became regulars of the City’s nightclub scene, garnering a reputation for their groove-heavy sets.

In 1996, Disco Biscuits released their independent debut album, “Encephalous Crime.” Its warm reception led to high profile support slots for Merl Saunders, the Black Crowes, Morphine and the Jerry Garcia Band, raising their profile and finding them new fans. Declaring their desire to create the wildest music possible, their sound became dance-heavy, making their live shows notoriously fun. Their eclectic influences kept listeners on their toes, with it not being unknown for them to break into classical jazz alongside their blues grooves.

They signed with Hydrophonics Records in 1998 for their sophomore effort, “The Uncivilised Area,” before returning three years later with “They Missed the Perfume.” Disco Biscuits were always eager to explore new territories, displayed with “Señor Boombox” in 2002. Two live albums appeared in 2006, with the double-disc “The Wind at Four to Fly” and “Rocket 3.” A steady release of albums continued, with 2009’s “Planet Anthem” and “Otherwise Law Abiding Citizens,” in 2011, still finding time to curate the festival, Camp Bisco.

Live reviews

I got to see the amazing and amazingly talented Disco Biscuits live in 2013. They put on a truly excellent performance. The light show was amazing and well thought out in time with the music. The drum solos were excellent and some of the best I have ever heard in my entire life. The guitar and bass had amazing riffs that made you sit up and take notice of both individually each time they played. The vocals were perfect for the genre and the lyrics were both fun and funny while being intriguing and interesting at the same time.

They were a band that is clearly in love with music of all kinds and it showed in that performance.The audience at times did not know what to think, they found themselves in awe of their amazing musical talent, but it was not a song you could really move around to so they just stood there, slack jawed.

Eventually people started to clap along to the faster songs and showed their love for the band this way. I loved that concert and think these are some of the best musicians I have ever seen perform live. Every one should see Disco Biscuits perform live at least once in their lives.

I left the show at 10.30 PM , had some dinner ( pasta and an excellent key lime pie) , had a manicure, a Brazilian then jogged 15 miles, showered and went back to the show and Disco Biscuits were still playing the same piece. DB strike me as not nearly as cool as the fans think they are, nor are the fans as cool as they think they are. Lots of Williamsburg whiskers. I've seen Pink Floyd - their pieces are long - a cover version does not need to be longer. I tried DBs once. Done.

The Disco Biscuits Announce 2024 ‘Why We Dance’ Tour

Following their first trip to the West Coast in 14 years earlier this summer ,  The Disco Biscuits will return to Colorado and the Western U.S. in early 2024 for a 12-date stretch billed as the  Why We Dance Tour .

The 2024 West Coast dates include a return to the Lake Tahoe area, this time for two nights at the Crystal Bay Casino Ballroom (1/25, 1/26), as well as a return to San Francisco’s The Fillmore (1/27). The band will then hit Santa Cruz, CA’s Catalyst Club (1/28) before heading down the coast to Los Angeles’s Fonda Theatre (2/1) and San Diego, CA’s Observatory North Park (2/2), and finally over to Tucson, AZ to make their debut at the annual Gem & Jam Festival (2/3).

From there, The Disco Biscuits will return to Colorado for a three-night run at Aspen, CO’s Belly Up (2/5, 2/6, 2/7) and a two-night stint at the Boulder Theater featuring support from Cloudchord . The Boulder shows will mark the band’s first return to the college town since 2017.

“We had so much fun out west this past summer and are really stoked to be back so soon,” said bassist Marc Brownstein in a statement. “Then back to Colorado, we’re looking forward to showing some new fans the ropes and rocking the slopes with you all. You might want to pack a big bag because we’re going from the mountains to the desert and back!”

An artist pre-sale period for the newly announced Disco Biscuits tour dates will begin on Wednesday, September 27th at 10:00 a.m. local venue time using the password “WHYWEDANCE”. Remaining tickets will go on sale to the general public on Friday, September 29th at 10:00 a.m. local venue time. VIP Packages for all announced shows will be available as part of the pre-sale and on-sale, with details found on their respective ticket pages.

While the band is looking toward 2024, there’s still plenty left on The Disco Biscuits’ plate for 2023. On October 6th and 7th, the group will host its inaugural  Biscoland festival in Lafayette, NY. In addition to four sets by The Disco Biscuits, two sets by  Lotus , and two sets by  Eggy , the festival will feature performances by  Opiuo ,  SunSquabi ,  The Floozies ,  Maddy O’Neal , and  Space Bacon , plus a Grateful Dead tribute set by the Biscuits’  Aron Magner and his “almost-acoustic” jazz trio,  SPAGA . Following the festival, The Disco Biscuits will head out on a run of tour dates in the Northeast. In early December, they’ll headline two nights of the annual  North Beach Music Festival in Miami Beach, FL (12/1, 12/2) before embarking on a New Year’s run featuring shows in New York, NY (12/28) and Philadelphia, PA (12/30 with Neighbor , 12/31).

The Disco Biscuits Announce Fall 2023 Tour

With their summer tour in full swing, The Disco Biscuits are looking toward the future and mapping out their fall plans, which will take them back to some previous haunts, visited over their 25-year career. After partaking in a handful of August appearances, the band will traverse through the Midwest and Northeast throughout September and October. 

Following a night in East Hampton, N.Y., the band will continue with a two-night appearance at the annual Catskill Mountain Jubilee, which comes before their return to Delaware. With August in the books, Disco Biscuits will pick up their next round of gigs beginning Sept. 15, when they arrive in Austin, Texas, for a two-night stand at Far Out Lounge and Stage, featuring support from Sunsquabi and TAUK Moore. The Lone Star State gigs represent their first time playing in the area since 2015.

Ensuing concerts will pick up in Minneapolis, Minn., followed by an evening at Chicago’s Rivera Theatre with support from Sunsquabi. They’ll bring the fun to Milwaukee, Wis., Indianapolis, Ind., and St. Louis before their Oct. 24 stand at Higher Ground in Burlington, Vt. From there, they’ll pick up added gigs in Hartford, Conn., and Portland, Maine. The final pair of newly announced dates will bring The Disco Biscuits to the esteemed Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, N.Y., for a two-night run on Oct. 27 and 28, arriving the Friday and Saturday before Halloween proper, on Oct. 31. 

On the topic of the upcoming tour, Jon “Barber” Gutwillig commented via press release: “The Bisco engine is fully charged, and we’re ready for a hot and ruckus Fall Tour! I’m particularly excited to play Catskill Mountain Jubilee again, as it’s always a big highlight for me and the family every year. Plus long-awaited returns to Austin and Minneapolis, and of course, our home away from home, Chicago, where we have been playing the most epic shows of every tour since the pandemic. Not to mention some Halloween bliss back at the Cap! Hope to see everyone out there, it’s going to be a blast!”

Risky Biscuits: The Disco Biscuits Debut “Risky Business” During Colorado Sprint

Over the weekend, The Disco Biscuits gave Colorado fans a taste of a new era. During a four-show run through the Rocky Mountains, the jamtronica quartet delivered a heaping helping of 2024 debuts, plus a brand new track and bold treatments of longtime fan favorites.

Bisco set off its Centennial State sprint with a performance at Fort Collins, Colo.’s Washington’s on Sept. 5, then brought the energy to Dillon the following evening, Sept. 6 for a staging at the Dillon Amphitheater. The third and fourth evenings of the quadruple-header held consecutive shows at Bellvue’s Mishawaka Amphitheater, where the beloved jam ensemble debuted “Risky Business,” their latest original track.

The Saturday debut of “Risky Business” arrived within the band’s 10th show at the Bellvue venue, just over 20 years after their debut on the stage. With vocals from Jon “The Barber” Gutwillig, the 17-minute spectacle delighted fans, especially those who recognized the track from fragments delivered at an April 13 show at Atlanta’s The Tabernacle, followed by an Aug. 29 tease in Chicago.  The following night, Sept. 8, the Biscuits swapped novelty for nostalgia, breaking into the first-ever inverted version of setlist staple “Mr. Don.” The first two shows also teemed with renewed energy, with two new inversions–“Why We Dance” on Thursday and “Ring the Doorbell Twice” on Friday–leading up to the first inverted “Spacebirdmatingcall” since 2014.

The band’s West Coast adventure resumes this evening, Sept. 11, with a show at The Depot in Salt Lake City, followed by a trio of consecutive shows in Livingston, Mont. from Sept. 13-15 to end the run. The Why We Dance Tour picks back up in October at Covington, Ky.’s Madison Live on Oct. 30, and continues with Bisco’s beloved Halloween series . Other notable East Coast showings include two nights at Brooklyn Steel, an evening at Woodstock’s Bearsville Theatre and a pair of holiday shows at The Fillmore Philadelphia to close out the jam-packed year.
