Should You Hire a Destination Wedding Travel Agent?

Short answer: Yes, you absolutely should.

In This Article

As much as we love to see a breathtaking event in a far-flung locale, the logistics involved with destination "I dos" certainly aren’t as dreamy as the end result; even the most well-heeled traveler may need to call in backup when there are wedding plans on the itinerary . Nevertheless, couples with wedding wanderlust should have no fear, with the right travel professional at your side a blissful bon voyage is but a phone call away. Enter: the destination wedding travel agent.

What Is a Destination Wedding Travel Agent?

A destination wedding travel agent is a specialized travel advisor who will help handle all of the travel-related logistics for your destination wedding. They are well-connected to resort wedding teams and well-versed in a destination’s marriage requirements.

As both the wedding and travel industries make a roaring return, we turned to one of the leading trip planning companies focused solely on romance travel to help you find the perfect travel agent match. Below, Jen Avey of Destination Weddings Travel Group shares why you should hire one of the pros and how to find the right one for you.

Meet the Expert

Jen Avey is the vice president of marketing for Destination Weddings Travel Group . An established leader in the destination wedding and romance travel industry, Destination Weddings has planned over 25,000 custom events over the last decade.

Wedding Travel Agent vs. Wedding Planner

We asked Avey to help sort out the roles of these experts to help determine who you need on your team when planning a destination wedding. But first, what exactly does a destination wedding travel agent do? A destination wedding travel agent does everything that a leisure travel agent would do and then some.

"Beyond booking you and your guests’ accommodations and airfare, a destination wedding travel agent will act as a liaison between you and your resort venue’s onsite wedding team," says Avey. "[They] will also be well-versed in each destination’s marriage requirements, as well as wedding packages, ceremony, and reception venues in each destination, so their resort recommendations will be much more tailored to your wedding needs."

The current outbreak of coronavirus (COVID-19) has been declared a pandemic by the  World Health Organization . As the situation remains fluid, we’ll be sharing tips and stories from industry experts to give you of-the-moment advice and help you navigate wedding planning today. For the most up-to-date guidelines and latest on travel restrictions and requirements, check the  CDC  and U.S. Department of State websites.

Although these travel agents go above and beyond your typical trip planners, it’s important to understand that they don’t replace your wedding planner or onsite coordinator. "Your destination wedding travel agent and wedding planner work together to create your celebration," says Avey. "These two roles are both vital and work in tandem with each other to make sure your destination wedding is covered from start to finish."

Avey further explains that these agents are typically based stateside and are in charge of helping you select the best venue based on your budget, style, and preferences. They also book the travel arrangements for you and your guests. Your destination wedding planner , however, will be onsite at the venue and is in charge of the day-of details on your wedding day. Prior to that, they’ll provide you with wedding package options to secure your flowers, photography, décor, tablescapes, day-of timeline, and so on.

Reasons to Hire a Destination Wedding Travel Agent

With the ever-changing travel restrictions of a world reopening coupled with the omnipresent nuances of wedding planning, there’s no doubt you’ll save yourself time, stress, and dollars by bringing in a professional. Avey shares a few key perks to consider as you decide whether you need a destination wedding travel agent.

They have deep expertise in the destination.

These agents have expertise beyond compare when it comes to knowing which location is right for you. "They’ll be able to narrow down the right destination and venue options, so you don’t have to be overwhelmed with this initial, yet vital, choice right off the bat."

They can access exclusive promotions.

These professionals have exclusive access to promotions you may not be able to find on your own or that are only available directly with the resort. Avey adds, "The cost savings alone is a huge perk!"

They can save you hours of time (and stress).

Above all, working with an agent relieves you of the time and stress it takes to plan an international or far-from-home celebration. "Having someone in your corner as a go-to resource for both you and your guests will alleviate any unnecessary planning headaches that are sure to come if left to plan a destination wedding on your own."

They are free to hire.

Who wouldn’t jump at the chance for free help when it comes to wedding planning? Perhaps one of the greatest perks is that all the benefits a wedding travel agent provides come at no additional cost to the couple. Because most travel agents work on a commission-based sales model, they do not charge a service fee—meaning they are 100 percent free to hire.

If an agency is charging a service fee, it’s usually in the form of an upfront deposit that will then be applied to your final cost. This is typically used to qualify the couple and ensure they’re serious about planning an event as opposed to looking for free advice to take elsewhere.

Destination Wedding Travel Agent FAQs

Like any part of your wedding team, it's important to feel like your travel partner is aligned with your vision and expectations ahead of your commitment. Avey shares what you need to know about hiring a travel agent who specializes in weddings including when to bring them on and how to know if they are the right fit for you and your fiancé.

When should you hire a destination wedding travel agent?

Once you’ve decided to have a destination wedding, you should hire a destination wedding travel agent immediately. "The primary job of this professional will be to help you choose the perfect location and venue for your celebration, which is one of the first things you should secure in the planning process," explains Avey. "So, the earlier you start talking with an agent, the better!"

How do you find the right destination wedding travel agent for you?

As with any vendor, it’s strongly recommended that you do your research and talk to a few agents before making any commitments. Avey always suggests looking for customer reviews or testimonials first to get a feel for who the agent is as a person and if they’ll be the best fit for your needs. She advises that it’s best to be paired with an agent who has expertise in what you’re looking for, "whether that’s an all-inclusive destination wedding in Mexico, an adults-only celebration in Europe, or an elopement and honeymoon in one!"

What questions should you ask during a travel agent consultation?

In your initial consultation, you should get a feel for how the process works from start to finish, so you can understand what to expect out of the agent during the process. Once you have a few venue recommendations, Avey recommends asking why they recommended each venue and what makes it a great fit for you. You may also want to ask for photos and testimonials of real weddings your agent has planned, specifically at the venues they recommended.

Above all, Avey says, be sure to ask about the terms and conditions around your partnership as it pertains to securing group space or room blocks at a resort . The importance behind knowing the difference is mainly because a reservation that is booked within a group room block comes with different sets of terms and conditions (as well as benefits) compared to a room booked outside of the group. "It’s vital to understand those differences, and a destination wedding travel agent will help you navigate all of these nuances," adds Avey.

I’ve Been to 4 Destination Weddings Across the World With Just a Carry-on — Here’s How I Did It

From Maui to Turks and Caicos, these travel essentials covered everything from takeoff to the ceremony, and beyond.

destination wedding travel group

Travel + Leisure / Madison Woiten

Over a decade ago, when my husband proposed, I knew instantly I wanted to have a destination wedding. We both came from small families and had a close set of friends, so luckily we were able to pull it off without a hitch and held our dream wedding in Todos Santos, Mexico. I love attending weddings in general, but there’s an extra air of excitement when dashing off to a cool location to be a part of something special.

Since then, we’ve been to four destination weddings and they’ve all been so different from one another. For one, we attended a small ceremony in Turks and Caicos at the beautiful Seven Stars Resort . When my best friend, got married, over 100 guests gathered in California’s wine country to celebrate. On our third destination wedding, we even got to visit a dude ranch, which was quite an adventure. More recently, we watched my cousin say “I do” in Maui — so I’ve had a lot of practice getting my destination wedding packing list to a science, and you should know that I only fly with a carry-on.

Traveling for someone's special day? Here is a list of my absolute must-have clothing, footwear, and gear items, along with the best travel accessories to bring to ensure that everything arrives at your destination smoothly.

Zeagoo Two-piece Linen Set

Linen is an excellent fabric for warm-weather locations because it’s breathable and lightweight. That’s why I brought this two-piece set to Turks and Caicos; it’s made with a linen-cotton blend, so it doesn’t get as wrinkled as 100-percent linen items would. The top is a drapey, button-front shirt with a roll-tab sleeve and two chest pockets, which can easily be worn on its own with a pair of shorts or a skirt. I’ve also used it as a beach cover-up several times. The full-length pants are loose with a comfortable drawstring waistband, making them great for long travel days.

PrettyGarden Elegant Mock-neck Cocktail Maxi Dress

Let me tell you how excited I am that I discovered this dress. It’s made with a silky satin fabric and is super figure-flattering because of the elastic cinch at the waist. The unique asymmetrical shoulder design creates a look of elegance and accentuates the clavicle. It was such a win that, when I wore this to the rehearsal dinner at the swanky Grace’s Cottage restaurant in Turks and Caicos, I got compliments all night. Still super psyched from that destination wedding, I’m eyeing a couple of other colors already; the dress is offered in 32 colors, from small to 2XL.

Everlane A-line Denim Shorts

If you've read my tips on how to pack a carry-on or my favorite three outfits to pack , you already know I’m a huge fan of Everlane and the brand's approach to sustainable fashion and commitment to quality and reasonable prices. I own these shorts in three colors because they fit like a dream. They’re high-rise, which holds you in at all the right places, and they have a 5.5-inch inseam, making them long enough to wear from the beach to a casual lunch. One thing to note about the shorts is that because they’re 100 percent cotton, so they don’t have any stretch. I often paired these with my Current Air Tuscan Citrus Top or this cute pink crop blazer for my friend's wine country wedding.

Jean Chen Smith

Toms Diana Sandals

For beach weddings, practicality and function are key for packing. Many hosts are going to have the ceremony on the sand so everyone can enjoy beautiful ocean views, which means that bringing 4-inch stiletto heels is probably not a good idea. Instead, for the destination weddings I've attended, I've opted to bring wedges, espadrilles, or flats. By far, the almost-sold-out Alissa slides from Journee are my favorite because the platform was only 1.5 inches, making them a comfortable choice for navigating uneven streets and the boardwalk (remember: you’ll have to take into account where you’re visiting because some of the destinations might not have paved streets). These platform sandals from Toms exude the same comfy elegance, and they're on sale for $56.

Furtalk Foldable Sun Straw Hat With UPF 50

This irresistible hat comes in eight colors and is a great purchase for both home and vacation. Made of paper straw with UPF 50+ protection, its wide brim helps to keep the sun out of your eyes. I found this especially useful for walks along the beaches in Turks and Caicos and Maui. It also offered coverage when we went couples' horseback riding at the dude ranch. The interior sweatband wicks away moisture and provides comfort on hot days. It comes in two sizes, so be sure to measure your head and check the size chart accordingly. Foldable and easy to pack, it will sit easily in your luggage or carry-on bag.

Ciormis Sparkly Metallic Pashmina Shawl Wrap

A wrap for chilly nights is a must. This metallic shawl adds a touch of glamor to your outfit for the reception or rehearsal dinner (and comes in handy on chilly flights when you need a blanket). When we were in Maui for my cousin’s wedding at the recently renovated Grand Wailea , I wore this nearly every night and can vouch that it goes with everything. The viscose blend fabric is soft and eco-friendly; you can simply hand wash it in the sink of your hotel room if needed. It is available in 11 colors and, at just $16, you’re going to want more than one.

Smismivo One-piece Halter Swimsuit

Feeling confident in a bathing suit is usually a challenge for most of us. When I was trying to find one to purchase and came upon Smismivo’s one-piece, I couldn’t get over all the positive reviews. I had to try it for myself and I’m so glad I did. The ruched design along the front of the body helps to shape and smooth. Removable pads offer additional support should you need it. Available in a variety of colors, it's a summer travel essential you'll want to put at the top of your packing list. The brand also makes several silhouette-enhancing two-piece suits — like this one , which hugs in all the right places.

Paravel Medium Cabana Tote

One of my most memorable experiences at the Maui wedding was a 2.5-hour snorkel tour my husband and I did with our friends to see magnificent turtles. Of course, I brought my trusty Paravel Cabana Tote , which held everything I needed for the day’s adventure. I love this Oprah-approved bag so much because it’s compact, but fits a lot. Also, it’s stain-repellent with a water-resistant lining and has several pockets for storing essentials. It’s so reliable that I also use it as a weekender bag when heading out on smaller trips. Removable straps allow you to wear it as a tote or crossbody.

Bsubseach Women’s Kaftan Dress

Kaftans are versatile and work well in any situation as a beach cover-up, a dress for dinner, or a casual, just-hanging-out look. I found myself wearing mine on repeat because you can just throw it on and accessorize with a cute bag and a pair of sandals. This Amazon shopper-favorite kaftan is lightweight and comfortable, offered in 20 colors, and is one size fits all.

BB Rhombus Crossbody Purse

I am a huge fan of G’Juan Xavier’s Goddess clutch in pink, so when I spotted a similar version in white, I couldn’t resist. Because I’m a practical shopper, I won’t drop a ton of money on white because I’m afraid it’ll get ruined. The BB Rhombus was still a great score for me and got plenty of use when I traveled for my loved ones' weddings; I was able to use it day and night, freeing up my luggage for other things. The PU leather is water- and scratch-resistant so you don’t have to worry about it when you’re busy having fun. And, it’s super versatile; the sturdy chain strap can be worn two ways: with a long strap as a crossbody or it can be converted to a shorter double strap to wear over your shoulders.

Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen

Before I gave the Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen a try, I hated putting on SPF because every formula seemed to be thick and sticky. Not this one; I love how weightless it feels against my skin. Now I pack it everywhere I go. It’s also scent- and oil-free to keep it from staining your clothing or belongings. Soothing yet effective ingredients like frankincense and meadowfoam seed keep your skin safe from the sun and hydrated, and it helps extend your wedding day glam with its primer-like formula.

PrettyGarden Floral Maxi Wrap Dress With Ruffle Sleeves and Hem

PrettyGarden’s floral wrap dress is perfect for rehearsal dinners because it’s classic and elevated without being too fancy. The ruffled sleeve and hem offer a lighthearted, flirty feel, and the wrap complements any waistline. Available in over 40 colors and prints with a size range from S to 2XL, it also makes for an excellent daytime travel dress because of its easy, bohemian feel.

Madewell Sidewalk Low Top Sneakers

Chances are, if you’re a guest of a destination wedding, there’ll be outdoor activities, so you’ll want to bring a pair of comfortable sneakers — like these from one of my favorite brands: Madewell . These kickers go with everything from denim shorts and midi skirts to casual dresses and pants. I found them invaluable when we were in Calistoga , California’s wine region, for my best friend’s wedding. Between lots of window shopping and wine tasting, we did tons of walking, but I was able to stay comfortable. I like how these have the brand’s Cloudlift insoles, which offer more cushioning for your feet. They also have a little more height than my other sneakers because of the platform outsoles.

Everlane Linen Side-button Jumpsuit

Everlane’s Linen Jumpsuit offers effortless elegance with its relaxed bodice, cute cropped legs, and self-tie belt. The square neckline is very flattering; it can be worn with or without a tank underneath. This was a great piece for all my destination wedding adventures (think: strolls along the beach, wine tasting, casual dinners, and bar hopping with the girls). It comes in five colors, sizes from 00 to 16. If you prefer sleeves, the brand's cross-front jumpsuit is an excellent option.

Petal & Pup Janelle Shirred Eyelet Button-up Top

This gorgeous top pairs well with the Everlane’s denim shorts I mentioned earlier; it also works with the brand’s Ava midi skirt — and basically any bottoms that you have packed in your suitcase. It’s lightweight and made of 100 percent cotton with all-over eyelet designs and delicate shirring across the front of the body. It comes in two colors, pink and cream; if you prefer tank tops, the Tanya Tiered Ruffle Eyelet Tank gives a similar look.

Best Travel Accessories for Destination Weddings

Whether you’re the one getting married, a bridesmaid, or a guest, one thing's for sure: you will want to be as prepared as possible. And since I’ve been to four destination weddings around the world, I’ve got plenty of recommendations on the best travel accessories to pack. Keep scrolling to find out what you need to fill the holes on your packing list.

9 Questions To Ask Travel Agents for Destination Wedding

When it comes to planning your dream destination wedding, the right travel agent can make all the difference. Understanding this, many couples often search for the best questions to ask travel agents for destination wedding to ensure they’re making the perfect choice. Navigating the complexities of destination weddings can be daunting, and choosing the wrong agent could lead to unnecessary stress and disappointment.

Planning a wedding is an adventure in itself, and when you add a destination to the mix, the excitement reaches new heights. Your destination wedding planner is the navigator on this journey, and it’s essential to ensure you find the best destination wedding travel agent to be the right fit for your special day.  Here are the interview questions for a travel agent at your next consultation.

1. The Top Question to Ask Travel Agents for Destination Wedding

Let’s start with the basics, shall we? When chatting with your destination wedding travel agent, it’s crucial to dig into the details. We’re talking about more than just picking a pretty venue or a cozy resort. Ask about the nitty-gritty: Do they handle the legal side of things for your dream destination? Are they savvy about the local customs that might sprinkle extra magic on your day? And what about your guests – is their journey to your ‘I dos’ just as smooth? Getting clear on these services is like laying the perfect foundation for your love story to unfold in your dream destination.

2. What is Your Communication Style?

Communication with your wedding planner should be as smooth as your first dance. Are they email enthusiasts, phone call aficionados, or do they prefer the personal touch of a video chat? If your wedding spot is across time zones, this becomes even more crucial. You need someone who’s in tune with your style, keeps you looped in, and makes sure your wedding vision is always in focus.

What makes the best travel agent?

The best travel agent stands out through their exceptional organizational skills, deep knowledge of various destinations, and strong network of local contacts. They excel in personalizing travel experiences to match clients’ unique preferences, ensuring every aspect of the journey is meticulously planned and executed.

3. What is Your Availability?

Your destination wedding isn’t just another date on the calendar – it’s your day in the sun (literally and figuratively)! So, how available is your planner? Will they keep you updated as regularly as you wish? It’s all about having that peace of mind, knowing you’re not left guessing and that they’re right there with you, ready to tweak and tailor as your big day shapes up.

4. Are You the Owner or an Employee of a Destination Wedding Travel Agency?

Is your planner flying solo or part of a bigger crew? This isn’t just small talk – it matters. Independent planners often bring a more hands-on, personalized approach, focusing on a select number of couples. On the flip side, being part of an agency might mean more resources at their fingertips. Get the scoop on this to understand how tailored and flexible your experience will be.

5. How Many Destination Weddings Do You Do Per Year?

Think ‘quality over quantity.’ Sure, experience counts, but you don’t want your wedding to be just another Saturday for your planner. Find out if they’re juggling too many love stories or if they can give yours the spotlight it deserves. It’s about striking that perfect balance – seasoned expertise with a personal touch that makes your day uniquely yours.

6. Can You Show Me a Portfolio of Other Weddings You’ve Done?

A planner’s portfolio is like a window into your potential wedding day. Dive into their past work – photos, testimonials, maybe even a video or two. This isn’t just about their bragging rights; it’s about picturing your day through their creative lens. It’s visual proof of their ability to turn ‘I wish’ into ‘I do.

7. How Do You Personalize a Wedding to Reflect a Couple’s Unique Story?

Every couple has a unique journey. How do you weave their personal story, interests, and quirks into the wedding theme and activities? This question helps you gauge the planner’s creativity and commitment to making your wedding distinctively you.

Is It Normal For A Travel Agent To Charge A Fee?

Yes, it’s quite normal for travel agents to charge a fee. This fee compensates for their expertise, time, and resources used in planning and booking your travel. It ensures personalized service and can often lead to cost savings and added value through their industry connections and knowledge.

I will say that you will find that there are plenty of travel agents who market their “free” service. Can you find a great one that doesn’t charge a fee? Yes. However, I do think that you need to do your homework and make sure they are experts in destination weddings!

Not all travel is the same, and a destination wedding is NOT the same as booking a trip to Cancun. The ones who have a great track record, and who provide exceptional service might charge a fee, but what you get in return is worth 10x that fee if they do the job right.

8. What’s Your Approach to Handling Cultural or Religious Elements in Weddings?

“If your wedding involves specific cultural or religious customs, ask how the planner has previously incorporated these elements. It’s crucial to know if they’re sensitive to and experienced in managing diverse traditions.

If you want to know the difference between legal vs symbolic ceremonies, check this out.

9. What Strategies Do You Use to Maximize a Wedding Budget?

Understanding how a planner works within different budget constraints can be enlightening. Ask how they prioritize spending and what creative solutions they’ve used to maximize the value of a wedding budget.

Are You Ready With Your Interview Questions For Your Travel Agent?

In the world of destination weddings, every detail counts. By asking these questions, you’re not just hiring a planner; you’re ensuring that every moment of your special day is as extraordinary as the love you share.

If you’re ready to kickstart your journey, schedule a free 30-minute strategy session with me. Remember, this isn’t just any vacation; this is your destination wedding and It has to be perfect!

From Field to Feast: At These Venues, What You Eat Is Grown on Site

The farm-to-table concept has been around for a while, but some couples expect more than simply fresh cuisine at their wedding. They want to be fully immersed in the farm experience.

Guests, dressed casually in summery clothes, are seated at long wooden tables on the grass, perpendicular to rows of flowers and vegetables. Greenhouses are on the background.

By Alix Strauss

Last October, Matthew Steinberg and Michelle Schwartz married in front of 100 guests in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, atop a thriving roof-deck farm overlooking the Manhattan skyline.

The cocktail hour was held outside, and photos of the couple were taken as they stood between crop beds. “It was cool to see people picking peppers on the property, and knowing hours later we were drinking them with tequila,” Mr. Steinberg, 30, a freelance TV editor, said of the pepper margaritas that were served.

Brooklyn Grange, which runs the rooftop facility, hosts around 45 weddings from April through November at its Sunset Park and Brooklyn Navy Yard locations. Rates start at $13,500 for a maximum of 150 people at Sunset Park and $6,000 for 50 or less at the Navy Yard.

The fully functioning, sustainably cultured farms grow botanicals, which are used in cocktails, as well as wildflowers for décor and various produce that is handpicked by staffers and incorporated into catered meals.

“To look at a plant or produce growing, while simultaneously consuming and tasting it in your drink or on your plate, and to look at wildflowers blooming and to see them arranged on your table, brings a deep, intensified full-circle connection between you, nature, and of all of these elements and experiences,” said Anastasia Cole Plakias, a founder of Brooklyn Grange. “The idea of farm to table is changing. Now you’re coming to the food, and the table is in the farm.”

The farm-to-table concept has long meant harvesting agricultural products and distributing fresh, seasonal food locally to retailers, restaurants, farmers’ markets, or even directly to customers.

But nowadays couples planning a wedding also “want a location and menu options that reflect their values, while being part of an experience and the environment,” said Viva Max Kaley, a senior events manager at Lindsay Landman Events, a boutique firm in New York.

“People want to know where their food has come from, who picked it, what they’re eating, and is it fresh,” she said.

The Stone Barns Center in Tarrytown, N.Y., has seen a steady increase in on-site weddings, to 88 last year from 64 in 2016. The farm encompasses 250 acres of pastures, woodlands, vegetable gardens, a green house, beehives and farming animals like cows, chickens, goats and pigs.

Integration is a major component of its attraction. In the property’s garden, cocktails are infused with foraged ingredients from the farm, such as badger flame beets, jalapeños (breeders remove the heat to produce flavor without the spiciness), and sassafras wood bark from the property’s surrounding trees.

“Couples want better-tasting food and flavors, happier experiences around what they are eating while letting the farm dictate the meal,” said Dan Barber, the executive chef and an owner of Blue Hill at Stone Barns, the restaurant on the property.

When planning a farm-to-table-wedding couples need to know that not all ingredients will be available when and how they want them.

“Produce is seasonal and depends on weather’s cooperation,” Mr. Barber said. These conditions, though, can add to the overall experience. “We are hard-wired to want a connection to eating in the place where you can see and experience food ripening in front of you,” he said. “There’s an intuitive pleasure when that happens.”

At a farm wedding in Saratoga, Wyo., planned by Ms. Kaley last year, guests nibbled on fresh baked bread and imbibed sourced cocktails, while a farmer explained how everything was made. Crudités boxes filled with produce picked fresh from the garden, were placed on guests’ tables. “The food served at our event was butchered, grown and cultivated on site,” said Ms. Kaley, adding that the experience made the meal more enjoyable for guests.

For urbanites, “those experiences are more meaningful,” said Sneh Diwan, the owner of Diwan by Design, a destination event planning company in Jersey City, N.J., especially for “people coming from New York, a city that doesn’t always allow you to have these experiences like frolicking through the field and then eating in it.”

Food served at farms comes with a story, as well as a level of trust, “a sense of home, a natural setting and the opportunity to create something together with the chef, the farmer, the baker, even with the location and environment,” Ms. Diwan said.

Those interested in food foraging with the person responsible for creating their wedding meal can be active picking participants at the Ritz-Carlton Orlando, Grande Lakes. The executive chef, Michelle Wick, leads the couple on a tour of the property’s farm, which features chickens, quails, ducks, mango and banana trees, herbs and produce. (Wedding dinners start at $275 per person.)

Want quail eggs with your canapés? Simply point and pick. Perhaps it’s choosing buzz buttons flowers, which have edible petals that tingle when you bite into them, to sprinkle on dishes or muddle in cocktails. The flavor “adds a nice sensation and pairs well with the honey collected from our bees,” Ms. Wick said.

“Couples are connecting with nature, and with every element of their wedding,” Ms. Wick added. “They are getting joy by seeing where their food is coming from, selecting specific ingredients, and in knowing they helped customize and curate the menu for their guests. It’s a very tactile and emotional experience. You can get a ballroom anywhere. Eating on a lawn next to the garden is special.”

Ten minutes from Chatham Bars Inn in Cape Cod is its eight-acre farm, which grows more than 180 varieties of produce and an array of botanical and wildflowers, including edible ones, which can also be used for bridal bouquets and table centerpieces. Apples harvested on the inn’s orchard are incorporated into vinaigrettes and mignonettes.

The inn hosts 75 to 100 weddings a year and offers educational tours that guests can participate in during the rehearsal dinner. “Guests travel through the farm with a cocktail as we highlight the methods of produce and where things come from,” Joshua Schiff, the inn’s farm manager, said. At the end of the wedding experience, guests get gift baskets filled with harvested produce. (Brooklyn Grange has something similar.)

These curated encounters help “guests get a greater sense of connection with the point of origins,” said Mr. Schiff, who added that barns have become desirable wedding locations. “Because you’re part of the harvesting, the tastes and textures of everything you’re eating create a longer-lasting memory.”

“A good vibe and connection to nature” were what Sunday Helmerich, 34, and Sally Rappaport, 29, desired when they booked the Brooklyn Grange at Sunset Park for their wedding on May 18.

“From the minute we got off the elevator and stepped into the farm,” said Mx. Helmerich, who identifies as nonbinary, “we knew they were creating a grounding experience that requires you to be present in a society that moves too fast.”

Breaking News

Soccer | trump heads to san francisco for fundraiser, but this bay area city has already donated more, soccer | why this san jose teenager could be the next great usmnt midfielder, kaedren spivey, who plays for the san jose earthquakes u-15 academy team, is already playing for the usa’s u-15 youth national team..

Kaedren Spivey, who turned 15 last week, is the MVP of the Under-15 division among all MLS Academy clubs, at PayPal Park in San Jose, Calif., Wednesday, June 5, 2024. (Shae Hammond/Bay Area News Group)

Combine that with a poise that his coach says is uncommon to most 15-year-old soccer players, and it’s easy to see why the San Jose native was named the MLS NEXT U-15 most valuable player after he scored 14 goals in 24 games.

If you ask Spivey, though, getting shots past the keeper is way down the list of things he enjoys about the game that has already taken him to places as far away as Portugal and Croatia.

The 5-foot-11 attacking midfielder, who plays for the San Jose Earthquakes academy and the US National U-15 teams, has grown up idolizing Paul Pogba.

The former Manchester United and Juventus superstar was a do-it-all talent, best known for making the kinds of long passes Spivey likes to emulate.

“It’s a tool in my toolbox, for sure,” Spivey said. “And I feel like when I do use it, it creates good opportunities.”

If Spivey continues to develop at this rate – and racks up more appearances with the U.S. National Team at the younger age groups – it wouldn’t be a shock to see Spivey eventually earn a coveted spot with the senior USMNT in a few years.

And, perhaps, play in the World Cup one day.

“That’s something I’d dream about as a little kid, so to talk about it as an actual possibility, it’s shocking,” Kaedren said. “It’s crazy.”

Spivey is the second of three soccer-playing brothers. His parents, Kelly and Jermaine Spivey, didn’t have ambitions of seeing their son represent the Stars and Stripes when they signed him and his siblings up for soccer at a local rec center.

They just wanted the boys to get some exercise.

Even though Kaedren wanted to be a football star like his father, who was a defensive back at Bowling Green in the 1990s, the beautiful game eventually won him over.

After winning MVP honors for his age group, it’s clear Spivey made the right choice. His mother could barely contain her excitement when she learned that Kaedren would be given the award on his birthday, May 28.

“It’s just one of those moments that’s kind of surreal because there’s so many excellent players at this level, and everybody is good — everybody,” Kelly Spivey said. “So for him to be singled out like that is really, really special.”

In addition to his parents’ support, Kaedren credits his older brother Jermaine, who is 18 and plays for the Earthquakes’ second team, for much of his success.

“Every time he would train to get better, he would bring me along with him,” Kaedren remembered.

With training taking up most of Kaedren’s life, he moved to online-only classes in March to fit with his busy schedule.

“He was missing so much school,” Kelly Spivey said. “He was missing a week to be in Southern California. Then in the fall, he was away for almost three weeks between going to Portugal and playing a bunch of different international teams, and then coming back and going straight to a tournament in Phoenix.”

Even though he’s dedicated his life to pursuing a pro career, Kaedren’s parents still want their son to live like a regular teenager when he can.

“He’ll still text his friends and go hang out on the weekend when there’s not soccer, and just hang out and be a kid. Because he’s still just a young kid,” said Jermaine Spivey, who works in tech while his wife has a job with the YMCA.

Spivey plays nothing like a young kid on the pitch, effortlessly stringing together one-twos and finding space like a seasoned pro. Earthquakes coach Erin Ridley said his understanding of “how to dictate the tempo of the game” is uncommon in kids his age.

But the prodigy is still finding his voice as a leader. He recently wore the captain’s armband for his team and has taken on a larger role in that capacity.

“You’re seeing him tap more and more into figuring out where he can show his strength as a vocal leader,” Ridley said. “What can he do to encourage his teammates and also hold them accountable? He’s really coming into his own with that.”

Standing behind a louder and more assertive Kaedren in his quest to one day represent his nation is a supportive family.

“Me knowing that they’re going to be there for me every step of the way, good or bad, that encourages me to keep striving to be better,” Kaedren said.
