Scotland, Ireland & UK Cruise Ports of Call

Discover some of the world-renowned destinations that await you on a British Isles cruise with Princess.

  • Orkney Islands
  • Paris & Normandy (Le Havre)
  • Portland for Stonehenge

Teeming with rural villages and vast countryside, Belfast is an explorer’s playground. Cruise to the British Isles and walk through the basalt formations of Giant’s Causeway. Stroll through the Botanic Gardens and observe the park’s Victorian heritage. Or experience true country living in the cottage of a breadmaker, where you can make fresh-baked goods to accompany your afternoon cup of tea.

In a land where fable and fact blend to become folklore, Cork is a beacon of romance among Ireland’s iconic cities. On a British Isles cruise, see the city’s emerald terrains reflected in the lakes of Killarney National Park. Savor an Irish coffee in the 18th-century village of Blarney. Or enjoy a lunch on the hills of Cashel, with the Romanesque architecture of St. Patrick’s Rock as your backdrop.

Experience the best of Irish hospitality on a British Isles cruise to Dublin. Stop by a pub and hear stories of the city from the people who call it home. Tour Trinity College, one of the world’s most famous universities. Or discover the secrets to brewing a stout at the Guinness Storehouse, and sip on a complimentary glass just a few hundred yards from where it’s made.

With centuries of cultural change, Edinburgh is home to a diverse landscape of design. Cruise the British Isles and follow the Royal Mile to the top of Castle Rock, where Edinburgh Castle sits overlooking the city below. Marvel at the expansive collection of artwork in the Royal Yacht Britannia, or shop for souvenirs on Princes Street while admiring the Georgian architecture of New Town.

Once an industrial giant, Glasgow is brimming with treasure. When you cruise the British Isles, wander the halls of Inveraray Castle to see a collection of royal portraits. Watch a kaleidoscopic display in Glasgow Cathedral as the sun pours through the stained-glass windows. Or spend the day admiring armor, weaponry and global gems in the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum.

Orkney is home to some of the oldest Neolithic sites in Europe. On a British Isles cruise, history buffs can hear World War II stories at the Italian Chapel. Or travel along Scapa Flow for an even deeper look into the region’s history of naval travel and trade. For those seeking mysteries, uncover secrets of the Ring of Brodgar, part of the Heart of Neolithic Orkney, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

In a land that inspires love stories, reconnect with loved ones on a British Isles cruise to France. Dock in Le Havre and enjoy a breakfast crepe at a sidewalk cafe. Or embark on a day-long adventure in one of two directions. Visit Paris, where famous artwork awaits, or head to Normandy and see the D-Day beaches or the tidal island of Mont Saint Michel. From the painted portraits to the real-life scenery, revel in it all with Princess.

Used to build Buckingham Palace and St. Paul’s Cathedral, the stone extracted from Portland’s quarries has changed history. But there’s more to the city than it’s commodities. Cruise the British Isles to investigate the mysteries of Stonehenge, and learn about the grape-to-glass process at Langham Wine Estate. Or see hundreds of baby swans parading through the grounds of the 600-year-old Abbotsbury Swannery.

Why Cruise the British Isles

The British pubs, Parisian artwork and Irish castles invite you to live like royalty.

Storied and splendid

Castles are the emblem of these regions. Between the chandeliers and tapestries, step into luxury when you visit the British Isles. Cruise to Dublin and parade through the 13th-century halls of the city’s fortress. Experience the grandeur of Urquhart Castle, and search for legendary ghosts in Glamis Castle. Or visit Edinburgh Castle, where kings, queens and nobles once lived and medieval secrets continue to linger.

Melodies of memories past

As the birthplace of many music icons, the British Isles invite you to sing, dance and raise a glass to songs played around the globe. Visit Liverpool to walk in the footsteps of a beloved boyband, and head to a local pub to hear the boys at their best. Cruise the British Isles for an evening of Irish song and dance in Dublin, or watch the Edinburgh Military Tattoo assemble bands, bagpipes and drums for a soul-stirring show.

Globally recognized, historically prominent

The British Isles are a mecca of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Cruise from Southampton to Liverpool, and walk along the Royal Albert Dock, the first structure in Britain to be constructed without wood. Shop along Princes Street in Edinburgh’s New Town. Or travel to Brú na Bóinne in Dublin and get up close to Europe’s largest collection of prehistoric megalithic art.

Raise a glass to adventure

In lands famous for their stouts and ales, pubs are the cornerstone of tradition. Cruise the British Isles and step into age-old establishments that are bustling with spirit. In Dublin, get a taste of true pub “craic” — an Irish term that equates to an atmosphere of fun, entertainment and good company. With festive music playing in the background, sip on world-famous beers that originated nearby while sharing a laugh with locals.

Natural Phenomena

Unexplainable yet undeniable

Discern fact versus fiction on a British Isles cruise, where mysteries and mythologies abound. In Portland, learn about the 5,000-year-old stone circle that displays an advanced understanding of arithmetic and astrology. On itineraries that sail to Cork, search the sea for the Bioluminescence beams created by the region’s gleaming plankton. Or hunt for Invergordon’s legendary monster in the waters of Loch Ness.

Museums & Art Galleries

Ancient artifacts and acclaimed artwork

No cruise to the British Isles is complete without a visit to Paris. See “Venus de Milo” and da Vinci’s “Mona Lisa,” or tour Notre Dame, a work of art in and of itself. Visit the Irish Emigration Museum in Dublin, where interactive galleries invite you to explore. Those departing from London can also stop by the Victoria and Albert Museum which houses over two million artifacts.

British Isles excursions

Our award-winning shore excursions bring you up close to beautiful coasts, monuments and historical wonderlands. On a British Isles cruise, snap photos of Dublin’s iconic sites — like St. Stephen’s Green and Christ Church Cathedral — and taste a world-famous stout at the Guinness Storehouse. Or ride through quaint villages in Belfast on your way to Giant’s Causeway, and revel in the natural structures that surround you.

Local connections

When you cruise the British Isles, meet the diverse personalities that call these lands home. In Dublin, head to a countryside bed and breakfast where a local chef invites you to savor homemade scones and jam. Or set out on a day-long tour in Cork with your loved ones and visit the city’s most iconic sites. Stop by the 18th-century village of Kinsale, and then continue to Blarney Castle, where legends and landmarks await.

More ashore

Enjoy even more history and culture during your British Isles cruise with More Ashore late-night departures and overnight stays. Visit several pubs during an evening tour, and hear stories from locals over a pint of local brew. Savor a traditional Scottish dinner in Edinburgh, and see the Royal Mile illuminated by street lamps and the evening light. Or explore Dublin by night, and indulge in Irish entertainment.

British Isles Cruise Onboard Experience

Curated comfort, world-class entertainment and international flavors await you.

Or learn traditional moves, like Flamenco or Irish stepdance, and listen to popular music from the destinations on your itinerary. On a European cruise with Princess, the choice is yours.

Reset, recharge, relax

Your European cruise should be every bit as refreshing as it is inspiring. Unwind in the Sanctuary, a retreat just for adults, and relish in tranquility. Or book an appointment at the Lotus Spa®, named "Best Spa on a Cruise Ship" by Spafinder Wellness 365™. Enjoy relaxing treatments — like facials, hot stone massages and detoxifying wraps — that will leave you recharged for upcoming adventures.

Vegas hits the seas

Experience the thrill of cards, dice, roulette and blackjack at the casino onboard our European cruises. Learn from experts — like our staff or perhaps other guests nearby — and put your skills to the test. More casual players can pull up a seat at the slot machines for the same adrenaline at their own speed. For an afternoon full of games, join fellow travelers for Bingo, or compete in scheduled group tournaments.

Ships sailing British Isles cruises

Discover the beauty on your doorstep with a uk cruise.

With a whole world to discover, it is all too easy to forget the treasures we have right on our doorstep in the United Kingdom. Allow us to remind you with a cruise around the British Isles, shining a light on the most fascinating corners of our diverse nation.

Made up of over 6,000 islands and boasting spectacular coastlines and beautiful landscapes, the British Isles is rich in diverse cultures, customs, and traditions, making for a charming cruise destination. Our unique British Isles cruise itineraries take you to remote, far-flung islands, iconic and vibrant cities as well as charming coastal towns.

With a focus on the stunning islands around the mainland of our nation, you’ll be able to explore unique cultures and landscapes on a round Britain cruise with Ambassador.

Discover the tranquillity of Tobermory on the Scottish Isle of Mull. With rainbow-hued buildings along its peaceful harbour, an iconic whisky distillery and amazing natural landscapes, you’ll have plenty to fall in love with here. We don’t stop there with the Scottish Isles, and a highlight of many cruises is Portree on the Isle of Skye, where you will feel like you’ve entered a Tolkienesque fantasy landscape upon Skye’s surreal crags and peaks. You’ll also be able to visit Kirkwall, and stunning feature of the northern Orkney Islands, filled with historical sites and surrounded by an incredible wilderness.

Looking southwards, you’ll be able to explore the quaint capital of St. Peter Port in Guernsey, where England meets France amid a picture-postcard landscape. Quainter and more unspoilt than its near neighbour St. Helier, St. Peter Port is part Francophile fishing port, part bustling capital – and a playground for the wealthy, who know a good thing when they see it.

Then there are the hidden pleasures of St Mary’s in the Isles of Scilly, a subtropical paradise off the coast of Cornwall. Little more than six square miles, St Mary’s is the largest of the islands, with an atmosphere that is unlike anything you will experience on the mainland.

It’s not just inspiring islands we visit, with stops at incredible mainland ports on our cruises of the UK, from Belfast in Northern Ireland, with incredible culture and access to the geological marvel of Giant’s Causeway. And you can explore the historic maritime city of Portsmouth on England’s south coast, loaded with amazing attractions and a bustling atmosphere.

Our cruises around the UK offer a fantastic opportunity to explore some of the best of both Britain and Ireland, uncovering UNESCO World Heritage sites, a wealth of cultures, incredible natural landscapes, energetic towns and cities and much more. Who knew there was so much to love on our doorstep?

Cruises from the UK

Cruises from the UK have always been popular, especially with those looking for a way to avoid flying on their next holiday.  When searching for a cruise ship, UK travellers are guaranteed an equally easy departure. Now, with a more extensive choice of UK embarkation ports available, it’s never been easier to set sail from British shores.

Many of the world’s best cruise lines offer voyages from the UK and sail to destinations worldwide, including the Mediterranean, Northern Europe, Adriatic, Caribbean, North America, Canary Islands and cruises of the British Isles . You can also embark on an unforgettable World Cruise from the UK with cruise lines including Cunard , P&O Cruises and Fred Olsen .

Benefits of cruising from the UK

Choosing a cruise that departs from the UK has many benefits. Not only are they perfect for those who wish to avoid flying, but they also mean you can avoid the hassle of baggage and waiting for airport transfers. So instead, you arrive at your UK port, wave goodbye to your bags and let your holiday begin!

Another benefit of booking a no-fly cruise holiday is that there are no restrictions when it comes to the weight of your luggage. Technically, you can take as much as you can comfortably fit in your cabin, stateroom or suite.

Cruises from the UK 2024/25

There are many fantastic cruises from the UK available in 2024 and 2025. For a classic cruise experience, head to the Mediterranean and enjoy blissful sunshine, incredible architecture and picturesque ports of call. Alternatively, head across the North Sea to Scandinavia and the Baltic and immerse yourself in the history of cities like St Petersburg or go in search of the awe-inspiring Northern Lights .

Longer cruises from the UK are also possible in 2024 and 2025. Take your pick from iconic transatlantic crossings aboard Cunard’s Queen Mary 2 , or venture south to the blue seas and swaying palms of the Caribbean with P&O Cruises. You can even book a cruise from the UK that visits Australia or Asia as part of a world cruise sector.

Culture & History of Inside Passage Cruise Port

Alaska’s rich history begins with the Indigenous groups that have lived in the region for thousands of years, including the Iñupiat, Yupik, Aleut, Eyak, Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian. Russian explorers reached the area in the 19th century, and the Yukon Gold Rush attracted thousands of miners to the remote area. Alaska became known as “the Last Frontier,” a place where you could stake a claim on the land and get rich trying. By 1959, Alaska was declared a U.S. state. Since the 1960s, the debate over oil rigs in Alaska greatly impacted the region. In the past decades, conservation and preservation of Alaska’s natural landscape has become vital to the area. Today, Alaska’s incredible nature and beauty, not to mention cool and sunny summers, have made it a popular vacation destination.

Local Currency & Tipping Customs

You’ll be cruising during your time through Alaska’s Inside Passage. However, Alaska does use the U.S. dollar as its official currency. Alaska’s main sources of economic growth and revenue are fishing and tourism. Don’t forget to tip tour providers, bartenders, and restaurant servers during your Alaska cruise.

Inside Voodoo in Belfast, a rock and metal-friendly venue with community at its heart

As the independent’s initiative to support grassroots music venues continues, owner ciaran smyth explains the ‘steep learning curve’ that led to him taking on this hub for live gigs, article bookmarked.

The Independent is continuing with its Main Stage initiative to support grassroots music venues, this month with a spotlight feature on Voodoo in Belfast.

Instantly recognisable for its black and crimson red exterior and matching decor inside, Voodoo has been managed by Micky Brown since its launch in 2011, with Ciaran Smyth as owner.

Smyth originally worked in engineering and property development before becoming involved in another music venue.

“It was a steep learning curve,” he recalled. “I wasn’t in management, but I saw potential doing that elsewhere. This was at a time when live audiences had died away, a lot of stuff was closing… so maybe it was mad to try working somewhere else, but the community I was in still loved live music.”

He described music in Belfast as “the great leveller, where people from all different communities could come together, and that to me really appealed.

“Because our staff come from everywhere and are all into music, I was reasonably confident that I could make a success of it,” he added. “It wasn’t a good area but it had potential.”

Smyth said that the downstairs bar “comes alive” whenever a live show is taking place: “There’s a community of people who love music here. Everyone works very hard, and a lot of the staff are musicians themselves.

“Two very important genres in Belfast are punk and metal, and while we try to vary our genres to keep our reach as wide as possible, that’s kind of where we came from.”

Inside the bar at Voodoo, Belfast

The area around Voodoo was “pretty rough” when it first started, he explained, but eventually took on a “whole different light”.

“We’re almost a victim of our own success because we don’t own the venue,” he said. “It is a big concern, because our lease is up in 2028, so I have to start figuring out our options. The problem is, my own family put a lot of money into this place to build it up, and it’s worked out well, but we’re trying to get another place going.

“The Music Venue Trust is an incredible organisation. When I first started there was nobody, so I was very quick to jump on board when they came along. The grassroots music scene doesn’t make money – what makes money is the social thing, everyone coming into the bar and having a drink – that funds everything.”

A band performs at Voodoo, Belfast

Voodoo recently launched a new scheme calling for new bands to apply to perform at the venue: “Something like 35 or 40 new bands have applied, and we put this on on a Wednesday night – the first one started last week. That’s a recent initiative we’re doing, because apparently we didn’t have enough to do already!”

Launched in association with the Music Venue Trust, the charity organisation founded in 2014 to help protect and support Britain’s independent music venues, the Main Stage project comes after warnings that the sector is in the middle of a “full-blown crisis”.

Grassroots music venues (GMVs) frequently serve as a launch pad for up-and-coming talent, with virtually all of the UK’s biggest acts starting out on some of its smallest stages. Artists including Ed Sheeran, Lewis Capaldi, Wolf Alice, Coldplay, Arlo Parks and Stormzy all started out performing in grassroots venues.

Despite this, a damning report by the MVT published in January showed that an average of two grassroots music venues closed permanently every week in 2023, marking what industry figures branded the “most challenging” year in a decade.

In its year-long initiative, The Independent will highlight one grassroots venue from each of the 12 UK regions, and speak with the people who help to run it to highlight the struggles and successes they have experienced.

Nato chief says up to 'individual allies to make decision' on allowing Ukraine to use long-range missiles inside Russia

The decision over whether to allow Ukraine to use Western-supplied long-range missiles inside Russia will be up to individual allies, Nato chief Jens Stoltenberg has told LBC.

Listen to this article

"It's for the individual allies to make these decisions, but it's important that we consult closely on these issues as we do," Nato Secretary General Stoltenberg told LBC's Andrew Marr.

Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenksy has reportedly pleaded with Western leaders for permission to use the missiles inside Russia as he demanded they make "strong decisions" to help Ukraine win the conflict.

Kyiv wants to use the missiles to hit Russian airbases and military sites which are being used to launch attacks on Ukraine.

Last year, the UK donated Storm Shadow cruise missiles to Ukraine, but the weapons remain off-limits beyond Ukraine's borders despite repeated requests from Kyiv.

Russian President Vladimir Putin warned that allowing long-range strikes "would mean that Nato countries, the United States, and European countries are at war with Russia".

Foreign Secretary David Lammy said on Sunday that talks are continuing with the US and allies about giving Kyiv permission to use UK-supplied Storm Shadow missiles.

Addressing the recent talks, Stoltenberg said: "I welcome these developments and these decisions but its for individual allies to make the final decisions"

But the Nato boss - who is standing down after a decade in the role - warned: "There are no risk-free options in war".

"We have a full-scale war in Europe launched by Moscow. There are no risk-free options in the war. But I continue to believe that the biggest risk for us will be if President Putin wins in Ukraine."

Concern about escalation has been one of the reasons why permission has not been given to Kyiv to use Western long-range weapons to strike targets inside Russia.

Stoltenberg was also asked whether the UK needed significantly stronger air defences - and even implement an iron dome around the British Isles similar to that used by Israel.

"I will not go into the specifics of NATO's defence plans and what individual allies should do but we need significantly stronger air defence," he said.

"Both against ballistic missiles and cruise missiles but we see the havoc drones can do, which is something we haven't seen before. It's part of the transition that NATO is on to invest significantly more in advanced air defence systems."

Sir Keir Starmer earlier warned that Nato needs to "put Ukraine in the best possible position" when asked about the UK potentially lifting restrictions on Storm Shadow missiles being used inside Russian territory.

The Prime Minister met US President Joe Biden in Washington on Friday for talks on giving Ukraine permission to use long-range missiles to target Russian airfields and military bases, but no decision was reached.

During a joint press conference with Italian Prime Minister Georgia Meloni, Starmer was asked about comments from Russian President Vladimir Putin that allowing long-range strikes "would mean that Nato countries, the United States, and European countries are at war with Russia".

Starmer told reporters in Rome: "I think it is important for us to start from the fundamental position, which is that this is an illegal war started by Russia and, as a result, Ukraine has the right to self defence, and we have all - Italy, the UK and other allies, Nato allies in particular - been standing with Ukraine."

He added: "It's a war against the values of democracy, of freedom and the rule of law, which apply to all of us in our respective countries, but across all of the allies. That is why we've supplied capability, we've supplied training, we've supplied money, and there are further commitments to be made recently in relation to all of those.

"I think it's very important as a matter of principle that we put Ukraine in the best possible position, and that's what we've been discussing. We've had the opportunity today to touch on that.

"I had the opportunity in recent days to touch on that. I'm not going to go into individual capabilities. You wouldn't expect me to do that, but the principle framework, I think, is absolutely right, and we'll continue to have our discussions in relation to it."

Meloni shared Sir Keir's commitment to Ukraine's defence, but said permission for long-range missiles is the responsibility of individual countries.

She said: "With regards to Ukraine, of course, Kyiv, it is very important for us that Kyiv has the very best conditions to sit at the peace table. And this is exactly what we've been doing right from the start, and what we're trying to do to guarantee the best conditions to achieve this.

"And with regards to the authorisation of using long-range missiles, these are decisions which are made by single countries which provide these weapons, bearing in mind their constitution and their legal framework. In Italy this authorisation, as you know today, as of yet, is not debatable, but these are all decisions which we fully share with our allies."
