Then I’ll recommend the most kid-friendly cruise ships for booking your next vacation.

Discover how enchanting life at sea can be on a Disney Cruise Line.

Entertainment of all kinds awaits you. If you want to splash and play on your family vacation, you can ride the AquaDunk or AquaDuck water coasters, romp in Donald’s Pool or Goofy’s Pool, or enjoy the sparkling pool at Mickey’s AquaLab.

Pools are also divided for guests of varying ages, such as the Quiet Cove Pool for guests 18 and older, splash pads for kids three and under, and Satellite Falls for adults.

Live performances and musicals give each night a magical feel, while karaoke, trivia, and Disney character meet and greets ensure every minute aboard is exciting.

There are even kids’ clubs to give parents a break to enjoy nightclubs, fitness facilities, or the adults-only pool.

There are only 5 ships in Disney Cruise Lines’ portfolio, but Disney has plenty of cruise itineraries to choose from. It sails to popular destinations as well as unique places that families might not have considered, such as the Norwegian Fjords .

Camp at Sea is Celebrity Cruises’ kids’ club for kids 3 to 17 years old. Camp is open every day from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. and is broken into 4 age groups. Activities range from arts and crafts for the youngest age group to video game tournaments, scavenger hunts, and movie nights for older kids.

Family-friendly excursions include cultural tours, water sports, volcano and glacier hikes, and swimming with dolphins.

There are 4 classes of cruise ships offered by Celebrity Cruises: Edge Class (its newest and most innovative), Solstice Class, Millenium Class, and Galapagos Vessels.

Parents Night Out

Where kids can play while you're away.

Family cruises are all about connection, but “you time” is still an important part of your vacation experience. Rest assured, whether you've planned a day of exploring or a romantic night out, the group kidsitting at our Youth Centers offers your children between the ages of 3 and 12 plenty to look forward to. It's the perfect place for them to relax or play games with their friends. And the charge is just $5.00 USD per hour per child.

Dinner events exclusively for kids

Children and adults alike get the chance to enjoy dinner on their own with a variety of opportunities for kids to eat with their friends and Princess Youth Staff. They'll find kids-only dinners on select evenings, a teens-only dinner on a formal night in an exclusively reserved section of the dining room, as well as ice cream and pizza parties held throughout the voyage. Please be sure the Youth Staff members know about any food allergies your child may have.

Cruise Activities for Young Adults — Ages 18-20

Imagine a secret society. Only those invited can join. Guests ages 18-20 will learn the secret handshake and be granted a special code word to unlock an exclusive list of Club1820 events made just for them. No parents, no little siblings, no official hosts.

For a long time, I thought cruises were for the older crowd . The only thing I knew about cruising was from my 58-year old aunt, who was constantly traveling all over the Caribbean via ship. From her, I thought cruises were basically laying by the pool all day, checking out the views and eating at speciality restaurants. (I mean, it is, but there’s so much more.) But in 2018, I finally set “sail” on a vacation at sea of my own, and my mind was completely changed. Now, I’m kinda obsessed with them. From the fun trivia to the adventure-filled excursions, cruises are for everyone! Whether you’re looking for a relaxing getaway (with a killer kids’ club), unique activities for your thrill-seeking teen or play areas to keep your toddler entertained , here’s a list of the seven best cruise lines for families.

Msc cruises, how i chose the best cruise lines for families.

As mentioned, I’ve been going on cruises since 2018 and will be heading on my sixth cruise this year. I’ve been on Carnival, Royal Caribbean and Norwegian, so I have first-hand experience on how each cruise line’s amenities, activities, entertainment, food and more. I also spent hours researching everything you need to know about each cruise line, from the ships themselves to the offerings available for each. To make sure all types of families and their needs are covered, I chatted with our parent editors, who vouched for a few of these cruise lines on the list. Keep reading to find one that’s right for you.  

1. Disney Cruise Line

If you’re searching for one of the best cruise lines for families, look no further than Disney Cruise Line. It takes all the magic we know and love from the parks with an at-sea flair. Character meet and greets replete with Mickey and friend, princesses and superheroes are a frequent occurrence. The ships also have themed days (like Pirate Night and Marvel Day at Sea), award-winning performances, specialty activities (Iike Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique and The Pirates League) and dance parties filled with spectacular fireworks—it is Disney after all. 

Parents can drop their young kids off at the Oceaneer Club, where they’ll be able to interact with their favorite characters, enjoy themed play areas and games. The older kids can also enjoy their own daily activities through The Hideaway, The Edge or Vibe club, featuring gaming systems, karaoke and a dance floor. One more thing: The fun isn’t just for the kiddos. Pack some dancing shoes and be ready for the nightclubs and lounges on board for guests 18 and older. 

Aside from main and casual dining options, Disney Cruise Line offers interactive dining experiences (like Animator’s Palate and Royal Court Royal Tea) for the whole family. There’s also adult-exclusive dining in case parents want a romantic dinner away from tantrums and time outs. Guests will also enjoy checking out Disney’s own private island in the Bahamas called Castaway Cay, where you just might see some hidden statues of your fave characters if you like to try out snorkeling under the sun.

2. Royal Caribbean

There’s no limit when it comes to Royal Caribbean. They have over 28 ships, which are categorized into six classes. Among them are family favorites like the Oasis class and the new Icon class, marketed themselves as the ultimate family vacation. The Icon of the Seas features everything you love from a Royal ship—rock climbing, FlowRider (aka a cool surf stimulator) and more—but with an entire ‘neighborhood’ dedicated to kids. As our Executive Managing Editor Catrina Yohay previously shared after a vacation on the largest ship in the world : “If you’re traveling as a family or in a large group, cruises just make sense, and that’s especially true on the Icon of the Seas. Like a fully planned vacation with minimal effort and the added bonus of a zero-commitment itinerary, this ship offers something for every generation to enjoy (yes, even Elvis trivia).”

The cruise line offers a Babies and Tots program, which you can drop off your baby (6 to 36 months). The baby-proof space have a bunch of toys and activities to keep them occupied. (Note: The Jewel, Adventure and Explorer of the Seas currently don’t have this service on board.) There are also three different clubs for older kids that you can book ahead of your trip, ranging from Aquanauts (3 to 5), Explorers (6 to 8) and Voyagers (9 to 11). They can explore arts and crafts, hands-on science experiments and friendly gaming competitions. As for the tweens and teens, they have more freedom to choose between pre-planned activities or spend their days hanging out at the lounge.

You’ll find even more activities to do with the family at their private island, Coco Cay. It’s home to one of the tallest water slides in North America, as well as a huge wave pool, expansive beaches and more. As for the food, the cruise line prides itself on buffet style at the Windjammer, specialty restaurants and complimentary favorites (like Loco Fresh, Sorrento’s Pizza and Park Cafe). If you’re looking for a table service, Royal Caribbean offers kids’ menu at their main dining halls, featuring pizza, spaghetti and chicken tenders.

3. Carnival Cruise Line

Carnival is known for being the most entertaining and party-filled of the bunch. Whichever of their 26 ships you set out on, the cruise line is all about having a good time. My first cruise (along with my 80-year-old grandmother) was on a Carnival. And we all had a blast. The company prides itself for having activities and amenities for every generation through dance parties, trivia and live performances. 

Each ship (yep, all 26) have Camp Ocean, a program broken down into Penguins (2 to 5), Stingrays (6 to 8) and Sharks (9 to 11). Each group can experience a host of activities. Some ships also have Seuss at Sea, where the iconic book characters come to life through character breakfasts, story time and a fun parade. Depending on the Carnival ship, the older kids can try out the Sky Zone (indoor trampoline park), catch a movie at the IMAX theater, experience the ropes course or hang out in their very own Club O2 or Circle “C”. Other amenities the kiddos will just love? Build-A-Bear Workshop, NASA-inspired activities, Thrill Theater and the first ever roller coaster at sea. FYI: Carnival currently has a Night Owls program, where you can leave your kids under 11 as late as 1 a.m, so you can enjoy a bit of nightlife on vacation. 

When it comes to dining, parents can rest assured that Carnival has you covered. Multiple dining venues have kids’ menus, featuring everything from chicken nuggets to peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Plus, the ships have complimentary all-you-can-eat pizza and soft serve that’s available through the wee hours.

4. Norwegian Cruise Line

If you have older kids, Norwegian may be the best cruise line for your family. They have a ton of amenities for all ages. Zoom around the largest race track at sea, immerse yourself at the high-tech Galaxy Pavilion or take a plunge on the water slides. I had the chance to check out their latest ship, Norwegian Prima, which has two drop slides, a duo waterslide and a huge sports area (with mini golf, pickleball court, ping pong and more).

They also have programs for each age group, including the Splash Academy (3 to 12) and Entourage (13 to 17). As for the Guppies Program (6 months to 4), parents are required to stay with their child and enjoy the amenities together. However, Norwegian does offer group babysitting during the evenings for parents to enjoy a child-free dinner. 

While I love all the amenities, the food options were superb. They have both specialty (where kids under 12 can eat for free) and a complimentary buffet where even the pickiest eater of the fam will find something to enjoy. Aside from the buffet and 24-hour spots, newer ships offer the Indulge Food Hall. They are set up like a food market, where you can order from any station and have it all brought right to your seat. It was a great experience trying out new dishes and having a family-style meal.

5. MSC Cruises

From Norway, Greece or Rome, MSC is the best cruise line for families that want to take their young explorers out to the open sea—and this one has a ton of amenities to keep them busy in the meantime. Whether you want to try your hand at zip lining or prefer staying on the ground and playing bowling, grab yourself a MSC Fun Pass to try out these activities throughout your trip. All the ships also show Broadway-level shows, live music and immersive performances that will even have your teen engaged in the theatrics. 

You’ll also find five different clubs on the ship, Baby Club (0-3), Mini Club (3-6), Junior Club (7-11), Young Club (11-14) and the Teen Club (15-17). They vary depending on the age group, but some highlights include sports competitions, dance parties, karaoke and more. There are also additional services for your babies, including MSC Baby Time, MSC Baby Care Service and the MSC and Chicco. FYI: MSC has their own baby laundry service, so you don’t have to worry about cleaning out those stains once you get home. 

At MSC, dining is elevated to give kids just as amazing (and sometimes luxe) food options as the adults. Assessed by nutritionists, the menu features fun dishes for all ages, including babies from 6 to 12 months. The buffets each have a Kids’ Corner and all the specialty restaurants have a menu, so your kiddo can find a meal that they’ll like.

6. celebrity cruises, celebrity cruises.

PureWow Editor-in-Chief Jillian Quint shares, “Celebrity is great for families with older kids. It's very sophisticated and sleek (no giant plastic water slides here), but there's still a ton for big kids and teens to do: shows to see, one million pools to lounge at, and destinations like Bahamas, Aruba and St. Maarten. There are also various ‘Camp at Sea’ options to keep kids entertained all day long. But the best part is knowing you can let your kids go off by themselves, but they can never get too far.”

Are cruises worth it for families.

Yes. As you can see by the list above there are plenty of amenities and accommodations for the whole family. Many cruise lines offer programs and have play areas for all different age groups. I recommend looking through the cruise line’s age policies before booking your trip. Some cruise lines won’t allow infants younger than six months to board the ship. Most may even require the child to be at least a year or older. 

What Is the Best Cruise Length for Kids?

It depends on your child/children. According to Celebrity Cruises, they recommend 3 to 4 days for toddlers, especially if it’s their first cruise. However, many kids can deal with 7 to 10 day cruising. It boils down to how comfortable your children and you are at sea. 

Which Cruise Lines Are Not Kid-Friendly?

The two most notable cruise lines that are not kid-friendly are Virgin Voyage and Viking, which are strictly 18 and over. Viking has been around for decades and implemented the age restriction around 2015. Their guests are mainly geared towards 55+. For families, a cruise on Royal Caribbean’s massive ships —some can carry more than 6,000 passengers—is as exciting as going to an amusement park. Disney Cruise Line

The hot ticket for Disney Cruise Line fans is the 4,000-passenger Disney Wish , which debuts on July 14 as the line’s fifth ship and first new ship in a decade. All-new features include an animated AquaMouse attraction (a wet ride on a 760-foot track), a Star Wars bar, and an Avengers-themed dining experience. On all of Disney’s ships, princesses and other characters pose for photos and star in full-scale musical productions highlighting Disney hits, like Frozen , eliciting squeals of delight. The family-centric vibe includes waitstaff who are experts in dealing with fussy eaters, and cabins with one-and-a-half bathrooms. The Oceaneer Club and Oceaneer Lab (for ages 3-12) are themed with such attractions as a Marvel Super Hero Academy. Carnival Cruise Line

Carnival got a lot of attention last year when it introduced the 5,200-passenger Mardi Gras , with the “wow” feature of the first rollercoaster at sea. Sister ship Carnival Celebration , also with a rollercoaster, debuts in November 2022. The line caters to families in a big way with waterparks and twisting slides, outdoor ropes courses, and video arcades. A “Seuss at Sea” program encourages kids to read Dr. Seuss classics, with The Cat in the Hat appearing at a Green Eggs and Ham Breakfast (complete with themed food). Family Harbor cabins and suites come with access to a private family lounge for breakfast, snacks, and video-game play. Camp Ocean entertains kids ages 2-11 with everything from crafts to dancing to video gaming, with separate clubs for tweens (ages 12-14) and teens (15-17). Three of Norwegian’s latest ships are topped with two-deck racetracks where older kids and adults can drive go-karts high above the ocean (younger kids can ride as passengers). The line’s newest ship, the 3,099-passenger Norwegian Prima, debuting in Europe in August, has the world’s first three-level shipboard racetrack—plus two thrilling 10-story free-fall slides at Aqua Parks. Video arcades and interactive games also appeal to the family crowd. Norwegian’s Splash Academy (for ages 5-12) youth program entertains kids with creative play and games, while teens can also enjoy the ship’s virtual gaming complex, the Galaxy Pavilion. Princess Cruises

Princess Cruises’ affiliation with Discovery TV makes it an excellent choice for multigenerational families—especially in Alaska. Kids in Camp Discovery (ages 3-12) may participate in science challenges tied to programs such as MythBusters and Shark Week . Wearable OceanMedallion technology lets you locate the whereabouts of teens when they are not in their own beach club, and you can all gather for a virtual scavenger hunt or watch the latest movies on a big screen under the stars. Lindblad Expeditions

The 2024 cruise season brings Princess' 55th-anniversary sailing to The Great Land, and the line is offering more than 150 Alaska voyages between April and September. The popular Voyage of the Glaciers with Glacier Bay itinerary northbound from Vancouver to Anchorage (Whittier), Alaska , is available on dozens of dates this season on Grand Princess , Royal Princess or Sapphire Princess . The sailing includes stops in the ports of Ketchikan, Juneau and Skagway, as well as scenic cruising in beautiful Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve and College Fjord in Alaska. If you prefer a smaller ship, choose Grand Princess or Sapphire Princess, which hold 2,610 and 2,680 passengers (double occupancy), respectively. Meanwhile, Royal Princess accommodates 3,560 guests at double occupancy.

The Princess Cruises North to Alaska program features immersive, family-friendly opportunities to learn about the history and traditions of the 49th state. Guests can sample fresh local seafood and meet famous Alaskans such as Libby Riddles, the first woman to win the 1,100-mile Iditarod dog race. In Skagway, families can meet some of the newest sled dogs and their handlers during Puppies in the Piazza on the ship. In Ketchikan, take a hike through Tongass National Forest, the largest national forest in the U.S., where you might catch glimpses of wildlife like black bears or bald eagles. You can also head offshore from Ketchikan aboard the Aleutian Ballad, the famed ship from Discovery Channel's "Deadliest Catch," to pick up the day's bounty of king crab and search for marine wildlife along Alaska's Inside Passage.

This seven-night itinerary aboard Disney Wonder departs round-trip from Vancouver on several voyages throughout the 2024 Alaska season, which runs from May to September. The weeklong Disney Cruise Line sailing includes glacier viewing along the Stikine Icecap and stops in Skagway, Juneau and Ketchikan. Many of the ship's nautical-themed staterooms are designed with families in mind and feature a "split bath" concept and extra under-bed storage for suitcases. Disney Wonder can hold 1,750 passengers at double occupancy and 2,700 passengers at maximum capacity. The ship's unique rotational dining venues include an "under the sea" adventure at Triton's, a dinner show with Disney characters at Animator's Palate and Southern specialties with jazz music at Tiana's Place. For a night out sans kids, adults can savor a quiet evening with northern Italian cuisine at Palo or nosh on casual pub fare at Crown & Fin Pub. Disney's excursions also offer family fun ashore – especially in Skagway. Try panning for gold with Disney characters like Donald Duck, then feast on baked Alaska salmon at Liarsville Gold Rush Trail Camp. You can also take an extended six-hour tour by boat into Alaska's deepest fjord, Lynn Canal, then hike through the rainforest to reach your canoe for a wilderness safari at Glacier Point. For a bucket list splurge, reserve a spot on the helicopter flightseeing tour that includes dog mushing on the Denver Glacier with a team of Alaska sled dogs.

Holland America Line: 7-Day Alaska Inside Passage

Holland America's Koningsdam will sail the line's seven-day Inside Passage itinerary more than 20 times between April and September in 2024. This round-trip voyage embarks in Vancouver and includes multiple days of scenic cruising. You'll sail through the Inside Passage for two days; through Tracy Arm Inlet, where you can disembark for a shore excursion; and through Glacier Bay, where the Junior Ranger Program is a highlight for kids. The ports of call on this itinerary are Juneau, Skagway and Ketchikan in Alaska.

Koningsdam features dedicated family staterooms with beds for up to five guests, two bathrooms and extra closet space. The ship carries 2,650 guests at double occupancy and 3,194 passengers at maximum capacity. A wildlife expert on the ship helps guests spot Alaska's incredible marine and land animals through announcements and during daily programs. Keep an eye out for humpback whales, orcas, sea otters, moose, brown bears and other wildlife. While in the Tracy Arm Wilderness Area, you'll want to take the Tracy Arm Fjord & Glacier Explorer excursion to explore glacier-covered mountains, jagged cliffs and the largest temperate rainforest in the U.S. surrounding the fjord. On a high-speed catamaran, you'll get up-close views of the Sawyer Glaciers and have potential sightings of harbor seals, bears, mountain goats and more.

This itinerary is available on several dates between May and August 2024 and features stops in the towns of Ketchikan, Sitka and Juneau, plus scenic cruising in Endicott Arm and Dawes Glacier in Alaska. There's also an afternoon call in the Canadian city of Victoria. While there, book an off-roading excursion through the coastal rainforest that includes a zip line adventure. Or, take a self-guided tour through Victoria's famed Butchart Gardens and the tropical Butterfly Gardens filled with wildlife.

Quantum of the Seas – which holds 4,180 passengers at double occupancy and 4,905 passengers at maximum capacity – is one of the two larger Royal Caribbean ships sailing in Alaska in 2024 (Ovation of the Seas is the other). As such, it offers abundant activities and entertainment for families at sea. On board, guests can experience Ripcord by iFly (the only skydiving simulator at sea) and take in snow-capped mountain views from the FlowRider surf simulator or atop the ship's rock climbing wall. Other onboard activities include bumper cars, an escape room, an arcade, pickleball and The Silent Party (a dance party where everyone wears headphones).

At mealtime, kids will have plenty of choices for casual and quick bites, from carefully crafted hot dogs at the Dog House and specialty pies at Sorrento's Pizza to around-the-clock snacks at Café Promenade and grab-and-go fare at The Café@Two70. When the little ones want to play or chill out with kids their age, Adventure Ocean offers activities for children 3 to 12 years old. Meanwhile, teens can meet other 13- to 17-year-olds at the Hideout Hangout.

Carnival Cruise Line: 7-Day Alaska from Seattle, WA

Carnival's 2024 Alaska season runs from May to September, with the 7-Day Alaska from Seattle itinerary available every month during that time. The round-trip sailing aboard Carnival Luminosa stops in Juneau, Skagway and Ketchikan, Alaska, as well as Victoria, British Columbia. You'll enjoy scenic cruising in Victoria and through Tracy Arm Fjord. You'll also have one "fun day at sea" to check out the activities and entertainment on the ship, which offers a double occupancy capacity of 2,260 passengers and a maximum capacity of 2,826 passengers.

Younger sailors ages 2 to 11 can join in on ocean-themed games, songs and programming at Camp Ocean, while tweens and teens (ages 12 to 17) can participate in destination-focused activities at See the World. Club 02 is a designated space for guests ages 15 to 17 to watch movies, play sports and video games, and more. Families can enjoy Dive-In Movies together at Carnival Seaside Theater and watch live musical productions at Playlist Productions. When it comes to dining on Carnival , families will have a choice of several casual restaurants to satisfy finicky eaters, including Pizzeria del Capitano, The Carnival Deli, Lido Marketplace and Swirls for soft serve ice cream. For a special night out, make reservations at the Steakhouse, which costs extra but offers reduced prices for children 11 and younger.

When going ashore, Juneau offers many family-friendly excursions – some of which you may not have the chance to experience anywhere else in the world. The Taku Lodge Feast & 5-Glacier Seaplane Discovery takes guests airborne by bush plane over the five glaciers in the Juneau Icefield. After the ride, you'll land in the Taku River at the historic Taku Lodge, which sits across from Juneau's largest glacier, the Taku Glacier. At the lodge, you'll feast on a bountiful meal featuring homemade side dishes and one of the best-known local seafood specialties, Alaska king salmon.

Celebrity Cruises: 7 Nights Alaska Hubbard Glacier

Celebrity's seven-night Alaska Hubbard Glacier itinerary is available on nine voyages between May and September 2024. The Celebrity Solstice (which holds 2,852 guests at double occupancy) sails round-trip from Vancouver and stops in the ports of Icy Strait Point, Juneau and Ketchikan in Alaska. You'll have two days of scenic cruising in the Inside Passage and around Hubbard Glacier. While in Icy Strait Point, book a guided nature walk excursion along the "Trail of the Bears" in the bush country of the Spasski River Valley. During your search for Alaska's coastal brown bears, you'll also learn about the Tlingit culture and community in Hoonah, and perhaps even see Sitka black-tailed deer and bald eagles.

Back on the ship, Celebrity's Camp at Sea program entertains children, tweens and teens ages 3 to 17 with four different age-appropriate programs: Shipmates (ages 3 to 5), Cadets (ages 6 to 9), Captains (ages 10 to 12) and Teens (ages 13 to 17). The customizable activities change every cruise and are based on the interests of the participants. Celebrity also offers autism-friendly activities and services for families on board.

When it comes to dining options on the ship, families will find kid-friendly selections on the in-room dining menu and at the main restaurant. For quick casual fare, head to the buffet-style Oceanview Café or to the Mast Grill for burgers and other grab-and-go bites. If you want healthier dishes, the Spa Café offers homemade energy bars, acai bowls, turkey wraps and other light choices.

UnCruise Adventures: Glacier Bay Adventure Cruise

If you prefer a small-ship cruise experience without the bells and whistles of some larger vessels, UnCruise offers adventure-style cruises to Alaska on its fleet of safari- and expedition-style ships. With these intimate cruises, you and the kids (ages 8 and older) can get up close to glaciers, wildlife and Alaska's vast wilderness directly from the ship via Zodiacs and kayaks. You may even see wildlife from a short distance away along the shoreline, as UnCruise vessels are able to sail into smaller waterways that are inaccessible to larger ships.

The line's Glacier Bay Adventure Cruise features two full days in pristine Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve aboard the Wilderness Discoverer, which holds a maximum of 76 passengers. Here, guests can hike along remote coastlines amid old-growth forests, view sea life up close and go birding at South Marble Island. You'll also have the opportunity to see several tidewater glaciers, go kayaking in the Keku Islands and explore Neka Bay on Chichagof Island. Another highlight is a visit to Glacier Bay Lodge at Bartlett Cove, the only hotel accommodations in the 3.3 million-acre national park. The seven-night itinerary departs round-trip from Juneau and is offered between April and September 2024.

The Best Family Vacation Ideas: Types of Trips For Families

F amily vacations are important for your family, but it can always be a challenge to decide when and where to go. Budget is obviously a major consideration, and as kids get older, time becomes more and more limited. So, you’ll want to make sure that you maximize your time by going to the best place possible. If you are looking for family vacation ideas, this post is a good place to start.

When my family is considering which destinations to travel to, we consider a variety of things. I have a family travel bucket list that I work from and using factors like budget, weather, and time available, we determine where to go. If you are building up your list, you may need some family travel inspiration.

This list of types of trips that every family should take can definitely help. Keep in mind that these don’t need to be big vacations. You can staycation to your nearest city for the day, visit a local theme park as part of a road trip, or head over to your nearest National Park for a quick trip.

Of course, if you prefer to do the same type of vacation each time, that is totally fine too. This is just a list to help you develop family vacation ideas for your bucket list.

Family Cruise

It’s no surprise that I love cruising, because it’s a great way to see multiple destinations, and can be very relaxing. If you haven’t cruised before, consider a short family cruise, like the 3-day Disney Dream trip we took as our first family cruise.

You can also combine a short cruise with another type of trip, such as a theme park vacation or a city vacation. With activities already organized for you, and meals all prearranged, cruising truly does feel like a vacation from responsibilities.

When looking at various cruise itineraries, you’ll have lots of options. Look at the amenities on the ship, as well as the ports of call that you’ll be visiting. While you may associate cruising with warm weather, remember that there are cooler weather Disney cruises, like Alaska, Canada, or Northern Europe.

We’ve loved our cruises on the Disney Cruise Line. I’ve been on all five ships, and while the Disney Fantasy is my favorite, I’ve enjoyed sailing on all of them. 

Family Resorts

There are so many family-friendly resorts offering water parks, outdoor pools, fun activities, beach access, kids’ clubs, and so much more. For some great quality time with your family, you may consider staying at a family-friendly resort where you can spend much of your time. All inclusive resorts are a great option, but there are other great options as well.

One of the best family vacation spots, in my opinion, is Beaches Turks and Caicos . This all inclusive resort in Providenciales Turks and Caicos is the perfect place for a family vacation. It’s a popular destination, so be sure to book your stay well in advance.

Theme Park Family Vacation

Theme park trips are so fun for families, especially for those with younger children. My kids now love rides, but when they were younger, they really liked seeing characters. Seeing the magic of a theme park through a child’s young eyes is a beautiful part of parenting.

There are loads of theme parks in the United States, from huge parks like Walt Disney World Resort and Universal Studios to smaller regional theme parks like Story Land in New Hampshire. You can definitely find one that will fit into your budget and family plans. Amusement parks are also a great option.

If you have older kids, you may find that they also love theme parks. Instead of being interested in characters, however, they may prefer the thrill rides. My kids absolutely love the thrill rides at Busch Gardens , for instance.

You don’t have to plan an entire theme park vacation, however. There are lots of family vacation destinations where you can just incorporate a day or two at a theme park or amusement park, and then spend the rest of the time doing something else.

City Vacation Ideas

Cities are filled with delicious restaurants, beautiful parks, historic sites, outdoor activities, and world-class museums, making them great places to visit with kids. We like to visit New York City at least once every few years, and the kids love seeing shows and exploring everything there is to see. There are also so many fun restaurants in New York City for the whole family to enjoy and even if it rains, there’s so much to do .

Our proximity to NYC makes that pretty easy, but New York isn’t the only big city worth visiting with kids. Before planning your big city trip, make sure that the kids are the right age for everything that you want to do since some museums aren’t the most kid-friendly.

Other domestic cities and popular destinations you may want to consider include the following:

National Park

We haven’t traveled to a National Park yet with our kids, but it’s definitely on our list. National Parks offer so much, from relaxing atmospheres to nature education. If you can’t make it to a National Park, state parks are another great option.

Families that enjoy camping may especially consider visiting a National Park, including Yellowstone National Park, Sequoia , Grand Canyon National Park, Zion , and Glacier National Park. You could even do a Yosemite day trip rather than stay there. Pinnacles National Park is another option.

Family Vacation Road Trip

Most of us have some great memories of road-tripping with our families. While road trips aren’t always easy, they are such a great way to take a reasonably-priced family vacation. They also help promote family bonding.

Road trips can be a great way to take a more flexible vacation because you won’t need to worry about purchasing flights for a specific time. While you may want to book your hotels, those often have a more flexible cancellation period.

Ski Vacation

I’m not a fan of the cold, but I’ve loved our family ski vacations. They are a great way to enjoy an outdoor activity as a family.

Family ski resorts offer many different family-friendly activities, but you can also consider a day trip to the mountain. If your kids (or you) haven’t skied before, definitely consider ski school or private lessons. My kids have loved their time in ski school and didn’t want to leave.

Like theme park vacations, you may also incorporate skiing into a longer family vacation. You won’t necessarily need to ski every day. See this ski packing list if you are planning a trip.

Beach Vacation

I love the beach, and so our family has experienced many beach vacations . You can also combine your beach vacation with a Caribbean cruise. I prefer visiting a beach resort, which makes things convenient because you can go back to the room whenever you need to.

As much as I love beautiful beaches, I do like to visit a place that has other family attractions in addition to just a nice beach. Even something as simple as mini-golf courses, boat tours, or botanical gardens can be a nice break from spending the whole family trip on the beach.

Guided Tour Family Vacation

Another relaxing vacation idea is a guided, group tour. We’ve been on several Adventures by Disney family vacations, and have loved every one. I enjoyed the relaxing vacation with absolutely no planning responsibilities, while my kids had a great time meeting other kids.

Adventure Vacations

When your kids are older, you may consider going on a family adventure vacation . Things like zip lining, horseback riding, and whitewater rafting can easily be incorporated into your regular vacation, or you can choose to take an adventure-filled vacation.

Water Parks

My kids love visiting water parks. Because we live in New England, we don’t have as many opportunities to visit outdoor water parks as we’d like. Luckily, there are some indoor water parks in the area – and we have lots of great places to visit that have water parks.

One of our favorite things to do is to visit a family resort with a water park on the property. These can include water slides, wave pools, raft rides, lazy rivers, and so much more. Of course, this type of vacation can be combined with any other type of trip, since you won’t want to spend a whole week just at the water park.

Traveling with a teenager isn't the easiest thing in the world — just ask my [Wise] parents. Every spring, we'd load up the car and embark on another epic family vacation , from sandy beaches to popular amusement parks .

But just like there are plenty of places to take the kids before they’re grown , there are several destinations — both within the United States and internationally — ideal for families with teens.

Many could be considered bucket list spots for teens, but why not splurge for the occasion? It may be the last before your kid(s) fly the coop.

Here’s why: Simply put, teens deserve to be treated to the ultimate dream family vacation before they fly the coop.

Do this: Book an all-inclusive package with flights (dealing with logistics in Africa can be tricky) offered by a tour operator like The Luxury Safari Company . For families with teens, they recommend visiting Sosian Lodge in the north of Kenya. In seven nights, families can strengthen bonds and have one-of-a-kind experiences while fly camping (sleeping in the bush), river tubing, working on an African cattle farm and even visiting with predator research teams. Charleston, South Carolina

Best for ages: 13-18

Do this: “For the slower-paced families, Sullivan’s Island is absolutely gorgeous and worthwhile," says Brittany Betts, a travel expert with  Florida Panhandle . "The beach there is well-kept and quiet, but there’s also a cute town full of unique shops and restaurants down the main strip. The reason why it’s combined with Charleston is because they are so near one another and this would be for the more fast-paced families that like doing several attractions,” she continues.

“There’s so much history in just this small town, but there’s also a large market in the area, cute restaurants with live music, and unique tours in old dungeons and through gardens that are really informative and fun for teenagers,” Betts explains.

"Surprisingly I’ve been to Chiang Mai twice! I went once as a teen on a high school trip and then again as a grownup with my parents. I can’t say enough nice things about Thailand, the people are truly the kindest you’ll ever meet, and the nature is unmatched, it’s almost like the colors are brighter in Thailand. If you're searching for a destination where your teen will thrive, look no further. My [Wise] parents took me and my two siblings to Myrtle Beach almost every spring break where we spent the week relaxing on the beach, shopping at Broadway at the Beach and eating our way through the city.

Here’s why: There are several reasons Myrtle Beach welcomes nearly 20 million visitors annually. For starters, there are more than 50 beaches to choose from, several world-class golf courses to conquer and one of the country’s biggest boardwalks selling limitless fun.

Do this: Teens anxious to drive can get behind the wheel of their own go-kart and race on six different tracks at the Broadway Grand Prix . Teens aspiring to join the PGA Tour will want to play at one of the area’s 90 golf courses which host junior opens throughout the year. (There’s also a Top Golf if you can’t get a tee time.) Meanwhile, young fans of "The Walking Dead" won’t want to miss the AMC hit show-themed escape room , and fans of "The Simpsons," The Simpsons in 4D . Teens wanting to hang out with other teens can easily do so on the Myrtle Beach Boardwalk and Promenade , home to one of the country’s tallest Ferris wheels. Porto, Portugal

Best for ages: 16+

Here’s why: Practically crime-free, extremely cheap and small enough to be walkable, Porto is the perfect European city to give teens a taste of independence. Located where the Douro River meets the Atlantic, its proximity to the beach and the Douro Valley ensures there is plenty to do.

Do this: Visit the world-famous “Harry Potter library” — Livraria Lello . Teens not afraid of sharks can learn to surf with Onda Pura . Take a scenic boat or train ride to the Douro Valley, the world’s oldest demarcated wine region where teens (16+) are legally allowed to taste wine and — more importantly — learn how it’s made.

Reno Tahoe, Nevada

Here’s why: Reno Tahoe is a unique destination where mountains meet desert. It’s where annual events include the Zombie Crawl, the Great Reno Balloon Race, the National Championship Air Races and — last but certainly not least — Burning Man.

Do this: Venture downtown to take iconic Instagram shots of the murals (there are more than 100) and to pose for pics with the Burning Man sculptures . Here’s why: Whether or not you agree with its nickname “America’s Finest City,” you’ll agree San Diego has beautiful year-round weather and so much to keep your teen(s) happy they’ll ask about going to college there.

Do this: Beach hop your way around the city’s nearly three area beaches, or cave hop via kayak or SUP . Take a self-guided street art tour , stopping to pose in front of massive murals — often illustrating important messages — for pics for the ‘gram. Ride the Giant Dipper roller coaster at the oceanfront Belmont Park or watch an interactive film in its 7-D high tech theater. Space Coast, Florida

Here’s why: Just an hour from Orlando , Florida’s Space Coast is an inspirational beach destination where teens can learn about everything from space exploration to manatee conservation.

Do this: Get a trip to Disney World , Universal Studios and Epcot out of the way. Then head southeast to the childhood home of Kelly Slater (it’s the East Coast's Surf Capital) for some beach time. Ukraine war latest: Russian forces take control of village in Kharkiv region - defence ministry

Russian troops are continuing to advance in the Kharkiv region - with the defence ministry claiming it had taken control of 12 settlements in a week.

Laws overhauling how army mobilisation works in Ukraine came into force today. 

The legislation, which was watered down from its original draft, will make it easier to identify every conscript in the country.

It also provides incentives to soldiers including cash bonuses or money toward buying a house or car - which some analysts say Ukraine cannot afford.

The law was passed in mid-April, a week after Ukraine lowered the age for men who can be drafted from 27 to 25.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also signed two other laws on Friday, allowing prisoners to join the army and increasing fines for draft dodgers.

The measures reflect the growing strain of more than two years of war on Ukraine’s stretched forces, who are now trying to repel Russia's advances in the Kharkiv region. 

However, experts and commanders say it could take several months before fresh recruits reach the front and reinforce exhausted troops there.

Russia could step up its offensive, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has warned, saying its operation in Kharkiv is potentially only the "first wave" in a summer assault. 

Mr Zelenskyy renewed his calls for allies to send more air defence and fighter jets on Friday in an interview with the AFP news agency.

He said Ukraine only had a quarter of what it needed in terms of air defence to protect its skies. 

He played down Russia's gains, but warned that Moscow was advancing. 

"We have to be sober and understand that they are going deeper into our territory. Not vice versa. And that's still their advantage."

On Friday,  Mr Zelenskyy said the situation in Kharkiv had "stabilised", adding Russian forces' "deepest point of their advance" was 10km.

Russian forces have captured the village of Starytsia in Ukraine's Kharkiv region, Russia's defence ministry says. 

Russian troops are continuing to advance in the area, it added. 

On Friday, the defence ministry said it had taken control of 12 settlements in Kharkiv in a week. 

Russia launched an offensive in the Kharkiv area on 10 May, heaping pressure on to Ukraine's stretched forces.

A 33-year-old man has died in hospital after a reported Russian airstrike on Friday, officials say, bringing the total number of dead to four. 

Regional governor Oleh Syniehubov said 16 people are still in hospital after the attack on Kharkiv, with two in a serious condition. 

A shell dating back to the 1940s exploded in the basement of a military academy in St. Petersburg on Friday, injuring seven Russian servicemen.

Russian military officials confirmed the incident but did not give an update on the conditions of those injured at the Budyonny Military Academy of Communications.

The academy trains soldiers serving in the army's signal corps.

The explosion happened while the basement was being cleaned and rubbish moved, according to reports in Russian media. 

The explosion was caused by a 76mm shell dating to the 1941-45 period, the Interfax news agency reported the region's military command as saying.

It was not clear why this ammunition was stored at the academy.

Ukrainian soldiers were forced to communicate only by radio and phone when intense Russian jamming disrupted their satellite internet connection, according to a report by the Washington Post.

The Ukrainian brigade in northern Kharkiv lost connection to drone and communications systems as Russian forces began their incursion on 10 May, the newspaper reported. 

It is reportedly the first time that Russian electronic warfare has completely knocked out the Ukrainian Starlink connection since the start of the war. 

A Ukrainian soldier told the Washington Post the disruptions prevented Ukrainian forces from conducting basic reconnaissance.

The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) said it was "notable" Russian forces were able to achieve such a widespread effect and said they may have waited to deploy a new electronic warfare adaptation during the beginning of the operation. 

Ukraine's military claims it has shot down all 13 drones it says Russia launched overnight from Primorsko-Akhtarsk and Kursk. 

The Ukrainian Air Force said that, along with missile units of the Armed Forces, it intercepted the drones over Kharkiv, Poltava, Vinnytsia, Mykolaiv, and Dnipropetrovsk regions. 

One person has been killed and another injured in a Ukrainian drone attack in Russia's Kursk region, acting regional governor Alexei Smirnov said.

It comes after a resident in the southern Russian region of Belgarod was killed by a drone while gardening on Friday (see our 7.43am post). 

Russian forces launched drone attacks on two energy facilities in Ukraine overnight, according to the country's grid operator Ukrenergo.

There were no casualties and power was not cut off to customers, the company wrote on Telegram. 

One of the attacks was in the central region of Poltava, Filipp Pronin, head of the regional military administration, said on Telegram. 

The other damaged facility is in the east of the country, Ukrenergo said. 

For context: Russia has increased its attacks on Ukrainian energy systems in recent months.

Sky News analysis of data from Ukrenergo shows in March 2024, an average of 889,000 Ukrainians were without power on any given day - the highest number since the war began in February 2022.

Ukraine's second largest city of Kharkiv has come under intensifying attacks in recent weeks. 

An airstrike on Friday killed three people and injured 31 more, while at least two more people were injured in separate attacks on the region.
