'Toen wij uit Rotterdam vertrokken'. Er is niet voor niets een lied over gemaakt: per cruiseschip vertrekken vanaf de Wilhelminakade is iets heel bijzonders. Boek voor uw cruise een overnachting in Hotel New York of aan boord van het ss Rotterdam om helemaal in de stemming van uw cruiseavontuur te komen.

Het kleine havenplaatsje Andalsnes ligt aan het prachtige Romsdalfjord. Een van de leukste uitstapjes die er te maken zijn, is dan ook een tocht rondom dit fjord. Als de tijd het toelaat raden wij ook zeker een ritje met de Raumabanen aan. Dit is een treinrit die niet alleen door mooie natuur gaat, maar al een attractie op zichzelf is. In de zomer wordt een klassieke stoomlocomotief ingezet op het traject.

Uw schip passeert vandaag de poolcirkel.

Het bij de Noordkaap gelegen Honningsvag is 's werelds meest noordelijk gelegen dorp. Het werd gedurende de Tweede Wereldoorlog compleet verwoest, maar vervolgens ook weer razendsnel opnieuw opgebouwd. Nu trekt het prachtige kleine vissersdorpje toeristen van over de hele wereld aan. Honningsvag ligt tussen bergen en de grijze zee in en heeft een bezoekerscentrum met een film over de Noordkaap en interessante tentoonstellingen.

Hammerfest is een stad en gemeente in de provincie Finnmark in het noorden van Noorwegen, nabij de Noordkaap. Hammerfest ligt binnen de Noordpoolcirkel, maar heeft dankzij de Golfstroom een ijsvrije haven. Vanwege deze ligging binnen de noordpoolcirkel gaat de zon in de zomer ongeveer tussen 16 mei en 26 juli niet onder (middernachtzon) en komt de zon in de winter tussen 21 november en 21 januari niet boven de horizon. Mede vanwege de donkere winterperiodes kreeg Hammerfest al vroeg elektrische straatverlichting (in 1891).

'De stad van het Noorderlicht' is de bijnaam van Alta. Het beroemde natuurverschijnsel is hier dan ook vaak te bewonderen tijdens winternachten. Een observatorium is in Alta gebouwd om het Noorderlicht te bestuderen. Bijzonder zijn zeker ook de rotstekeningen die in de omgeving te vinden zijn; ze zijn zelfs op de lijst met beschermde monumenten gezet door UNESCO.

Hoewel het stadje slechts 60 kilometer van de Poolcirkel ligt, is het klimaat verrassend mild. Het vriest zelden in het door bergen beschutte Akureyri en in de zomer kan het zomaar 25 graden worden. Een van de hoogtepunten van het stadje is dan ook 's wereld meest noordelijk gelegen botanische tuin.

Met ruim vijfduizend inwoners is Sisimiut de op een na grootste stad van Groenland, na hoofdstad Nuuk. De inwoners in het dorpje leven vooral van de visserij - het gezicht van Sisimiut wordt dan ook bepaald door vrolijk gekleurde (voornamelijk rood en blauw) vissershuisjes.

De meest noordelijk gelegen hoofdstad van de wereld heeft tevens het vermoedelijk oudste parlement ter wereld: het werd in het jaar 930 opgericht. Het parlementsgebouw, met ervoor een standbeeld van nationale held Jon Sigurosson, is een belangrijk nationaal symbool voor de IJslanders. Achter het parlementsgebouw liggen prachtige tuinen en een elegante kathedraal. Reykjavik is natuurlijk ook de uitvalsbasis voor alle betrekkelijk dichtbij gelegen natuurpracht die IJsland te bieden heeft.

Dover, gelegen in het graafschap Kent, is een belangrijke havenstad in Engeland. Het is het begin- en/of eindpunt van veel cruises door heel Europa. Het meest karakteristiek aan de omgeving van Dover zijn de beroemde witte krijtrotsen. Deze ziet u al van kilometers ver opdoemen als u het Verenigd Koninkrijk binnenvaart.

De Nieuw Statendam is het zusterschip van de Koningsdam. De inrichting van dit schip is bijzonder ruim en licht; de interieurs zijn geinspireerd door het thema 'muziek'. Indrukwekkend is het centrale atrium, dat maar liefst drie dekken hoog is en waar beelden geprojecteerd worden van bijvoorbeeld sterren of voorbijzwevende wolken. De suites en hutten van de Nieuw Statendam zijn ruim ingericht en voorzien van de modernste technieken. Aan boord vindt u tevens maar liefst 10 eetgelegenheden, variërend van het Pinnacle Grill specialiteitenrestaurant tot New York Pizza & Deli. Gaat u mee op ontdekkingstocht? Een stapje verder dan Noord-Europa? Binnen de noordpoolcirkel liggen een aantal bestemmingen die bij uitstek geschikt zijn voor het ontdekken per cruiseschip: Groenland, IJsland en Spitsbergen. Spitsbergen, ook wel bekend als Svalbard, is één van de weinige landen waar u nog ijsberen in het wild aan kunt treffen. Het is een gebied vol gletsjers, bergmassieven en ijzige kusten, waar ook walvissen, zeehonden en walrussen zich als een vis in het water voelen. Deze Noorse eilandengroep ligt uiterst afgelegen en kent daardoor een unieke flora en fauna. Hetzelfde geldt voor het grootste eiland ter wereld, Groenland. Blijft u liever iets dichter bij huis ? Dan is IJsland een hele goede keuze! Dit vulkanische eiland in de Noord-Atlantische Oceaan kent extreme natuurkrachten. Dampende geisers, borrelende poelen en gigantische lavavelden domineren hier het landschap. Hoofdstad Reykjavik is niet groot, maar wel trendy en hip en een goed uitgangspunt voor veel excursies.

Tijd voor een kennismaking met het mooie Bergen! In deze oude Hanzestad zul je je niet vervelen. Wandel langs de oude vissershaven en vismarkt, bewonder de statige pakhuizen, de vesting, het openluchtmuseum Gamle Bergen of neem een kijkje in het zeeaquarium. Andere bezienswaardigheden zijn onder meer Bryggen met de oude houten winkels uit de Hanzeperiode, de Haakons Hallen, de 13e-eeuwse Rosenkratz Toren, de Heilige Maria-kerk en de Grieghallen. Vanaf de berg Fløien, waarvan je de top met een kabeltreintje kunt bereiken, heb je een schitterend uitzicht over de 7 bergen en 7 fjorden die de stad omringen!

Ålesund is de grootste vissershaven van Noorwegen. De stad is gelegen op drie verschillende eilanden die door middel van bruggen met elkaar verbonden zijn, met de Sunnmore Bergen op de achtergrond. De vissersschepen liggen in de buitenhaven, in de kleine en gezellige binnenhaven liggen de kleine schepen en plezierjachten. Ålesund is bekend om zijn bijzondere ‘Art Nouveau’ architectuur en neemt op dit gebied een belangrijke positie in binnen Europa. In 1904 werd vrijwel de gehele stad door brand verwoest, waarna de stad in baksteen werd herbouwd. De mooiste huizen in de stad staan in de Apotekergate en de Kongensgate.

Akureyri is de vierde plaats van IJsland en de grootste plaats in de regio, en wordt daarom ook wel 'de hoofdstad van het noorden van IJsland' genoemd. De letterlijke vertaling van Akureyri betekent zoiets als 'landtong met akkers'. De stad is bekend om haar fraaie botanische tuin en de vele goed onderhouden particuliere tuinen rondom de woningen met bomen, planten en bloemen. Dit is zeker gezien de geografische ligging van de stad (net beneden de poolcirkel) een bijzonderheid. De rivier Glerí loopt dwars door de stad, en deelt deze in tweeën. Ten zuiden van de rivier vind je het gedeelte dat interssant is voor toeristen met o.a. een grote winkelpromenade.

Isafjordur is een grote vishavenstad, de letterlijke vertaling van de naam van deze stad is ‘ijsfjord’, en dat is dan ook een perfecte omschrijving van de omgeving. Houd je van adembenemende landschappen en natuurlijke bezienswaardigheden? Dan moet je in Isafjordur beslist voet aan land zetten! In de stad heerst een bijzondere folkloristische sfeer die te danken is aan de unieke ligging net onder de noordpoolcirkel. Geef je over aan eenvoudige geneugten zoals wandelen, sightseeing en vogelspotten. Wie een dosis erfgoed en geschiedenis wil opsnuiven, kan terecht in het Maritieme Museum in een van de oudste gebouwen van Ísafjörður. Het schetst het leven en de geschiedenis van de nederzetting met een fascinerend arsenaal visgerei en boten.

De IJslandse hoofdstad Reykjavik is prachtig gelegen met heuvels en bergketens op de achtergrond. Reykjavik is de meest noordelijke hoofdstad ter wereld en is de laatste jaren steeds meer in opkomst. Het stadsbeeld wordt bepaald door historische huizen, brede wegen, kerken met zeer moderne architectuur en supermoderne winkelcentra. Bezoek ook zeker de Hallgrimskirkja kerk, het hoogste kerkgebouw van IJsland en hierdoor hét symbool van de stad. Ook de Grasagardur Botanische Tuin is de moeite waard om heen te gaan. In dit rustgevende park in de wijk Laugardal vind je unieke plantsoorten van IJslandse bodem. De wandelpaden leiden je langs mooie waterpartijen, rotstuinen en verschillende bloemenpracht. Ook is er een kleine dierentuin in het vijf hectare tellende park aanwezig. In de omgeving van Reykjavik zijn diverse heetwaterbronnen te vinden, waaronder het zeer bekende Blue Lagoon.

Lerwick is de hoofdstad van de Shetlandeilanden, een eilandengroep even ten noorden van Schotland. Hoewel de eilanden officieel deel uit maken van Groot-Brittannië, doen de eilanden Scandinavisch aan. Van de ongeveer 100 eilanden zijn er slechts zo’n 15 bewoond. De eilanden staan voornamelijk bekend om de grote kolonies van zeevogels die langs de kust te vinden zijn. De prachtige kustlijn met steile kliffen en rotsen zijn dan ook adembenemend om te zien. In Lerwick is onder andere het Croft House Museum bezienswaardig. Deze oude ruïne is nu omgebouwd tot een interessant museum. Een ander noemenswaardig museum is het Shetland Museum en Archives. Hier leer je meer over de geschiedenis van deze bijzondere eilandengroep. Rondom Lerwick kun je vooral genieten van de rust, de natuur en de uitgestrekte landschappen.

In het noorden van Schotland vind je Invergordon. Dit charmante stadje is dé toegangspoort tot de schilderachtige Schotse Hooglanden. Wanneer je van ruige, maar romantische landschappen houdt, zijn de Hooglanden absoluut een bezoekje waard. Geniet van de schoonheid van de bergen, de stille heidevlaktes, de rustige vissersdorpen en de grillige kust met verrassende baaien. Een andere belangrijke bezienswaardigheid in de buurt van Invergordon is het meer van Loch Ness, waar je misschien het bekende monster wel spot! In het Invergordon Naval Museum en Heritage Centre leert je meer over de geschiedenis van het gebied. Een andere aanrader is Inverness, een grote stad in de buurt van Invergordon. Hier kun je genieten van de combinatie van stad, de bergen, valleien, meren en rivieren. Ook zijn er veel kastelen in de buurt te vinden, allen met een zeer interessante geschiedenis.

Newhaven vormt de ideale basis voor een bezoek aan Edinburgh, de hoofdstad van Schotland. De binnenstad van Edinburgh bestaat uit een Old en een New Town. In het oude gedeelte vind je gezellige cafés en bijzondere musea, waarvan de National Gallery of Scotland ongetwijfeld de mooiste is. Hier is een unieke collectie van Europese schilderijen uit de 15e tot de 19e eeuw te zien. In het nieuwe gedeelte vind je leuke winkels waar je je uren kunt vermaken. Doordat het kasteel van Edinburgh op een heuvel is gebouwd, steekt het boven de stad uit. Vanaf het kasteel heb je een fenomenaal uitzicht en vergeet vooral niet om het kasteel ook te bezoeken. Hier vind je kunstschatten, wapens en schilderijen. Maak het uitstapje in Edinburgh compleet door typische Schotse specialiteiten te proeven. Het meeste bekende exportproduct is natuurlijk de Schotse whisky.

IJsland stedentopper Reykjavik

De bruisende IJsland havenstad biedt u vele musea zoals het kunstmuseum en het nationale museum. Een absolute highlight in Reykjavik is de opvallende bouwstijl van de Hallgrimskirkja kerk met zijn 5275 tellende pijpen. Het imponerende pijpenorgel leent zich voor een mooi fotoshot. Een andere opvallende highlight is de moderne warmwateropslag oftewel welke op de Öskjuhlíð heuvel gelegen is.

Attractief Natuurpark Snæfellsjökull

In dit populaire natuurpark vindt u de met ijs bedekte Snaefellsjökull vulkaan. Het park kent een oppervlakte van meer dan 150 km². De wandelroutes met lava geven te kennen dat er vulkanische uitbarstingen hebben plaatsgevonden. De rederij biedt u attractieve excursies naar dit populaire en gemoedelijke park.

Geysir van formaat

Locale boottocht langs de Westman Eilanden

In het zuiden van Ijsland kunt u een boottocht maken langs de Westman eilanden.

Het grootste eiland, Heimaey, is het enige bewoonde eiland van de groep. Aanschouw hier de papagaaiduikers en huizen die opvallend op steile rotswanden zijn gemaakt.

Blue Lagoon baden

U allen bekend, biedt IJsland heel wat warm water bronnen en is een bezoek aan de Blue Lagoon ook de moeite waard. De baden liggen dichtbij Keflavik en zijn vooral populair bij mensen met gewrichtsklachten.

Flora en fauna

Lava en as zorgen voor een uitstekende voedingsbodem dat resulteert in groei van allerlei bloemenpraal. U ziet er broedende papegaaiduikers en zwart-witte vogels met een felgekleurde snavel. Op de ijsvrije toendra’s van IJsland grazen rendieren en op het water is de kans groot dat u walvissen en zeehonden tegenkomt. Een ritje maken op een echt IJslands paard, een ras dat streng wordt beschermd, kan natuurlijk ook.

Stedentopper Reykjavik

In de hoofdstad Reykjavik worden kleurige huisjes afgewisseld met moderne architectuur en kunst. Bekende voorbeelden zijn de Hallgrimskerk en de sculptuur Zonnevaarder in de vorm van een Vikingschip. Vanuit Reykjavik liggen enkele van de indrukwekkendste plekken van IJsland binnen handbereik, zoals de beroemde ‘Gouden Waterval’ (Gullfoss), nationaal park Thingvellir (waar in 930 het eerste IJslandse parlement bijeen kwam) en de Strokkur-geiser, die om de paar minuten maar liefst 20 meter de lucht in spuit.

The Bow Lounge provides the closest access to water level making it the perfect spot for guests to spend some time watching for marine life.

Located on Deck 6, at the forward-most part of the vessel, the Bow Lounge provides the closest access to water level via the foredeck, making it the perfect spot for guests to spend some time watching for marine life. Within a few steps, guests can be outside, with a vantage point that is ideal to watch the ship’s course, spot wildlife, or take in the beautiful natural scenery.

The Bow Lounge introduces some technological enhancements, providing guests with a first for Seabourn with touch screens showing the ship’s plotted location, as well as navigational charts and scientific information used to help guide the ship on its journey. Large screens project live footage from mounted cameras outside the ship, and from a drone when conditions permit, while the touch screen monitors invite guests to explore on their own with a live map, weather information, and notes detailing upcoming expeditions. Expedition Team members will be available within the Lounge throughout the day to interact with guests, answer questions, provide interpretation and aid in spotting wildlife.

The space provides direct access to the Bow Sprit on Deck 6 forward (when conditions permit) to give guests the sensation of standing in front of the ship and views of waves parting and ice sloughing off the bow at the waterline.

From Svalbard to Greenland

Setting sail from Svalbard, we’ll visit Northeast Greenland National Park. This gigantic nature reserve covers 375,000 square miles in the remote northeastern quarter of Greenland. In the absence of people, wildlife abounds. And with some luck, you might see iconic Arctic species like musk oxen and polar bears.

From Greenland to Iceland

Further south, Scoresby Sund is an immense system of fjords and glaciers fanning out over 24,000 square miles. Expect majestic fjord landscapes, historical ruins, abundant Arctic wildlife and a potential visit to one of the most remote communities in the world before we sail to Iceland at the end of the cruise.

Enjoy time in Oslo before flying to Svalbard

Your adventure begins in Oslo, Norway’s fjord-side capital. If you have time, explore the city and enjoy what it has to offer.

With its rich history, diverse eateries and lively art scene, Oslo is a fascinating place. You’ll find museums, galleries and some very modern architecture – including the beautiful Opera House and new Munch Museum. The city is compact enough to explore at a relaxed pace.

Go for a walk in the Ekebergparken Sculpture Park, visit Akershus Fortress or relax in a floating sauna in the fjord. Explore modern Sørenga to enjoy urban beach life and perhaps try some New Nordic cuisine before spending the night at your airport hotel.

After your morning flight to Longyearbyen, it’s time to explore the world’s northernmost town, a colorful frontier settlement where people are outnumbered by snowmobiles.

Longyearbyen is perfect for exploring on foot. Stroll down the main street and you might see Svalbard reindeer pass by. Although wild, they’re curious and gentle.

Before boarding your ship in the afternoon and continuing your Arctic discovery, join an included excursion and get a glimpse of this amazing polar bear–inspired region at the top of the world. Relaxing at sea

Getting ready for Greenland – Kalaallit Nunaat

As we sail into the Greenland Sea on our way to the world’s largest island, it’s time to relax, find your sea legs and get acquainted with the onboard facilities.

The Expedition Team will give talks about your upcoming adventure and explain the protocols of respectfully visiting wildlife habitats and Indigenous Arctic communities. In the lecture hall, you’ll find out what to expect in the epic landscapes of East Greenland National Park and the stunning fjords of Scoresby Sund.

If you’re feeling active, head to the gym and work out with a view. On the other hand, you could try out the sauna, relax in a hot tub, indulge yourself at the onboard eateries or just find a quiet corner to read a book with a hot drink. Love science? Then join one of our onboard Citizen Science projects, a fun and engaging way to contribute to global research.

Northeast Greenland National Park and Scoresby Sund expedition days

Explore the wild east

We’ll spend the next 10 days exploring Greenland’s remote and pristine east coast. Extending for over 1,740 miles from north to south, this long stretch of coast is cold, isolated and remote, even by Greenlandic standards. The south-flowing East Greenland Current brings lots of sea ice directly from the Arctic Ocean, challenging human settlement but creating a haven for ice-dependent wildlife, including the polar bear.

Local weather and ice conditions will dictate our exact route, but our plan is to sail first to Scoresby Sund, the world’s largest fjord system. You’ll feel a deep sense of serenity in this wild and rugged region with white and blue icebergs floating in mirror-like waters surrounded by looming mountains. If conditions permit, we’ll visit Ittoqqortoormiit – the most remote inhabited community in the western hemisphere.

Should the sea ice be favorable, we’ll continue our journey north to the beautiful Northeast Greenland National Park – the world’s largest national park. Visiting this fragile Artic wilderness is a rare privilege as only a few visitors are permitted here each year.

Apart from old trapper huts, some science research stations, and a military outpost, there are very few traces of human life in this 375,000 square mile park. Be assured that this is one of the quietest places on Earth, and you’ll enjoy a feeling of great peace as we explore this beautiful wilderness.

As this is an expedition cruise, the Captain and Expedition Team will guide us to the most favorable spots on a day-by-day basis. Our goal will be to pack in as many shore landings, small boat cruises, nature walks, kayaking adventures and wildlife sightings as possible.

Holland America Line's youth activities program, Kids Club, offers an array of entertaining events for kids and teens ages 3-17, supervised by a full-time, professionally trained staff. They'll have an opportunity to join other kids their age for arts and crafts, sports, video game competitions, scavenger hunts, challenging team games and themed parties. Note: Kids Club is not offered on cruises of 25-days or longer, including all Legendary and Grand Voyages. We will offer a selection of children’s activities throughout these longer voyages for any children who may be onboard.
