Meet the Princess crew: Martyn Moss

What's it like to make a career out of cruising? We spoke to Regal Princess’ Entertainment Director Martyn Moss to find out

Updated July 2020

Ever imagined what life onboard a cruise ship 24/7 would be like? We sat down with the Entertainment Director for Regal Princess, Martyn Moss, who has been working with Princess Cruises for more than 20 years, to see what it's really like to live, work and play onboard a ship.

Martyn's stats

  • Current location: Regal Princess
  • Time working for Princess: 20 years
  • Lives: North Wales with his wife, two-year-old daughter and 12-year-old stepson

What does your role entail?

I head up the onboard Entertainment Programme, which means I get to organise the music, shows and activities on Regal Princess – it’s my perfect job.

Did you have to do any specific training or studies to get this role?

There is not a specific educational requirement for my role – you need an understanding of entertainment and then need to gain experience as you work your way up the ladder. I think an outgoing, friendly personality is key. I love chatting with people and enjoy planning an entertainment schedule that I believe will be the most engaging for our guests. It can be challenging, as each guest is looking for something different, so variety is key – as is trying new things every now and then.

How do you differentiate between work and play when you live on the ship?

I don’t really try to. I go ashore on my mountain bike if we’re in a port that’s good for cycling. I’ve found lots of incredible places over the last few years and it’s a great way to blow off some steam. I also get pleasure out of watching our musicians and actors perform in the shows.

Do you have a lot of friends onboard?

We definitely have a cruise family and I have lifelong friends I’ve made because of this career and lifestyle. In fact, I met my wife onboard. We met on Regal Princess when she was the leader of a string quartet. We hit it off and in 2016 I proposed to her in Regal Princess’ Piazza in front of around 500 people. Thank goodness she said yes, or it could have been an embarrassing moment!

What’s the best part about working on a cruise ship?

For me, it’s the travel, the interesting people I get to meet, plus the work I get to do. What’s not to like?

What’s your favourite destination and why?

I love the Mediterranean – Venice, Kotor and Kusadasi are my favourite ports. Venice for strolling aimlessly, Kotor for mountain biking and Kusadasi, because I love food from that region.

What advice do you have for customers to make the most of their time on a cruise?

Try something new, get involved in a lot of activities and come to as many shows as you can!

Hi everyone! I decided to launch a visual version of the Princess CD/ED list here for the visual learners and it can be found here:  https://airtable.com/shrgry4ieUZ0p31qZ/tblG4mVF0lHDjW5po?blocks=hide

I am the only one who maintains this, so it won't necessarily be any more accurate than the table posted above, but it's another way to stay updated and can be bookmarked for easier access. And of course, it helps put a face to a name!

For those of you who cruise Carnival, you may be aware that they run a list of their cruise directors that is publicly accessible ( https://airtable.com/shrxzucqLGHbpDmm8/tblZJCAW6us7UhDmZ?blocks=hide ) and I took inspiration from that to make this list concept that we currently have, more informative and visual.

Please let me know what you all think and if you have any questions. I hope this can help some of you out in satisfying your curiosity/plan whatever you need, although remember that schedules are always subject to change! Happy cruising!

Thanks

CruzeQueen2

Thank you! Great list. Nice to see so many familiar faces. Appreciate your efforts. 😊

This is great--thank you!!

How things change!  We haven't cruised Princess in the last few years, but I don't recognize a single name on the posted list.  Back in the "old days," we had several repeat CDs like Lisa Ball (my all time favorite; had her at least twice, both on TAs, I think).

This is great! Saves me from having to google the names of those I don’t know. Nicely done!

@CC Help Michell , thanks for  making a fresh start.  Not sure if this was done for the Captains list and the MD list, but how about a complete fresh start by making all three of these Princess "stickies" because they tend to get buried down the pages and people cannot find them.

Just got a note about our upcoming March 8th Cruise on the Ruby. Our CD will be Callie Smit.

Admittedly we haven't been able to cruise for the last several years, but LOTS of new names!  Two "old" ones are Lisa Ball and Billy Hygate.  Liked them both.  I'm just surprised that Lisa is Entertainment Dir., instead of Cruise Dir. as she was when we sailed with her several times.

ED is a relatively new position that was a promotion for many of the long time CDs.

So the ED is superior to the CD?  I thought it was the other way around or that they were equals with the ED in charge of the entertainment on stage and the CD responsible for daily activities like trivia, etc.

ED is definitely superior. ED is uniformed and wears 3-1/2 stripes (I believe) while the CD, although not in an officer's uniform is only a 3 stripe position (I may be incorrect about the number of stripes the ED wears but CD is definitely half a stripe less than the ED). ED is responsible for all entertainment department activities while the CD is second in command of entertainment and is generally the public face of the entertainment department. But they work closely together with the ED doing much of the behind the scenes work while the CD is out in public. But when needed, either will do what is needed just as the old Deputy Cruise Director position stepped up to fill the CD's shoes when needed.

Have definitely heard the CD refer to the ED as "boss".

Does anyone know who is taking over for CD when Matt O'Brien departs the Island?  We haven't received any emails giving any indication of who anyone is other than our captain...hmph!

WestcoastGirl12

@karabear15 Hey Kara! I am also wondering. I loved Matt O last year on the Royal. Was hoping he would stay on for our voyage on the 17th but it looks like he isn't 😞

Post on our roll call if you find out!

@WestcoastGirl12 I'm beginning to think that we aren't going to have one, there is zero information!  If I see anything, I will let our group know.

In the past we always got email with lots of information regarding the CD, Captain, shows, MUTS, etc. It was nice and there was always a copy available in the personalizer as well. The last few years we get pretty much zip although we have gotten a couple of uninformative emails. I love the ones telling me to "Book EZ Air NOW!" when it's not going to be available for a long time yet.

Yep, all we have gotten so far is who our Captain is...I guess that's the most important, at least someone will be in command of the ship  😂

Not most important to us. A good CD is a gem. A poor CD can be a lame influence on the staff.  We had one captain who, when he made his announcements, everybody groaned a bit. The staff would respectfully stop serving/taking orders/whatever and wait. The captain would go on and on and on and on and on... Finally the servers would kind of grin and shrug and go on taking orders/serving drinks and meals, etc. Eventually the captain would finish. He wasn't a bad captain but he went on and on and on and on and did it very slowly. On the other hand, he didn't run us into a big rock while showing off for his girlfriend. Good captain. Got us from Point A to Point B and all points in between and did it safely.

Regal Princess Itineraries

Regal princess review, review of regal princess.

The 2014-built Regal Princess cruise ship is the 2nd Royal-class vessel in the Princess Cruises fleet , with fleetmates Royal Princess (2013), Majestic Princess (2017),  Sky Princess (2019), Enchanted Princess (2021) and Discovery Princess (2022). From the same class is also the P&O UK 's liner Britannia (2015).

The vessel (IMO number 9584724) is currently Bermuda- flagged (MMSI 310674000) and registered in Hamilton .

History - construction and ownership

Princess Cruises is a USA-based passenger shipping company headquartered in Beverly Hills CA. A former subsidiary of P&O Princess Cruises (1977-founded), in 2003, the company merged with Carnival Corporation - the world's largest cruise shipowner. Among Princess Cruise Lines Ltd's assets is the Caribbean private island resort Princess Cays (on Bahamas Eleuthera Island's southern end), located approx 80 km (50 mi) from Nassau .

Regal Princess cruise ship

The 3600-passenger ship Regal Princess is among the largest cruise ships sailing the seas. The vessel was built at Fincantieri shipyard, Italy and has 19 decks. Regal Princess features an impressive number (16) of bars and restaurants and a luxury spa. Regal offers unique features to her guests, such as a glass-enclosed walkway over the ocean known as the SeaWalk.

Princess Cruises new ship design

The first sailing season of Regal Princess started in the Mediterranean on October 17, 2014, when the ship headed for Fort Lauderdale, FL. A curious fact is that in 2016 Princess Cruises starred in a new 6-part ITV documentary "The Cruise". On March 3 the show aired for the first time in the United Kingdom. It focused on the life of cruise passengers and crew as they sailed through Northern Europe and Russia onboard the Regal Princess. The line was featured in a TV documentary for the second year. In 2014, sistership Royal Princess was featured in the reality show "The Cruise Ship".

Decks and Cabins

Regal Princess staterooms (1780 total, in 38 categories) include 350 Suites, 1088 Balcony and 342 Inside cabins, in 38 categories. The ship has no Oceanview cabins. Most outside accommodations (1438) have private step-out balconies. The ship also has 36 wheelchair-accessible cabins. The largest are the Balcony Suites (470 ft2 / 44 m2 plus 210 ft2 / 20 m2 terrace).

The boat has 18 decks , of which 15 are passenger-accessible and 8 with cabins.

Shipboard dining options - Food and Drinks

There are many for-fee dining options onboard Regal Princess, but guests who would rather not pay are offered enough quality and variety to satisfy. Those who prefer tradition will choose between the three main dining rooms: Allegro, Concerto and Symphony.

Princess Cruises new ship design (Lido restaurant)

Horizon Court and Horizon Bistro are the buffet options, providing a more casual vibe. Passengers who want to have lunch in their swimsuits can take a burger from Trident Grill or a slice at Prego Pizzeria. Indoors, Alfredo's features delicious calzones, salads and thin-crust pizza. Allegro Dining Room is the only option for free dinner with traditional set dining. Passengers can eat at 5:45 p.m. or 8:15 p.m. Allegro's menus are diverse and offer a soup or salad course, an appetizer, pasta and an entree. There is also a special dessert menu.

Follows the complete list of Regal Princess restaurants and food bars.

  • Sabatini’s Restaurant (Italian specialty restaurant, a la carte: offers 3-course Italian/seafood menu; open between 6 p.m. -11 p.m., reservations recommended)

In April 2024 Princess Cruises announced that starting September 14th (2024) fleetwide would be introduced 3 distinct main dining/dinner table service options – Traditional, Reservable, and Walk-in Anytime. By the new program (introduced with Sun Princess) on each ship are allocated 3 separate dining rooms - one for Traditional dining (offering early and late dinner seating), one with Reservable times, and one for Walk-in Anytime (open-seating). The new options are integrated with the OceanNow service, allowing anything to be ordered anytime, and delivered anywhere onboard.

Shipboard entertainment options - Fun and Sport

The bulk of performance action takes place in Regal's Princess Theater, situated on decks 6 and 7. The theatre features palladium-style seating; it's deep, and if you don't arrive early, you might find yourself in the back, which is far from the stage. However, there aren't any obstacles or bad sightlines.

Princess Cruises new ship design (Theater Lounge)

The show lounge doesn't offer tables or drink holders, so if you order one preshow or come with a drink, you'll have to hold it. The entertainment is excellent and varied, with a beat that is quite innovative. In addition to the production shows, the Princess Theatre hosts other acts including vocalists and instrumentalists.

Follows the complete list of Regal Princess lounges, clubs and other entertainment venues for kids, teens and adults.

  • The Piazza Atrium (3-deck open floor area; features live performances entertainment and lobby Bar Piazza)

Regal Princess Wiki

The shipbuilding order was placed on February 17, 2010. The shipbuilding contract with Fincantieri was signed on May 4, 2010.The vessel's keel was laid down in August 2012. The launch (float-out from drydock at Monfalcone ) was on March 26, 2013. Sea trials were in the Adriatic Sea (April 16-21, 2014). The boat was officially delivered on May 11th.

The 4-day pre-Inaugural Cruise (May 16-20, 2014) was to Kotor Montenegro from Trieste Italy . The itinerary was operated prior to the Maiden Voyage from Venice (May 20th).

Fun facts: It takes 3 million man-hours to build a Royal-class cruise ship. For its construction are used 37,000 tons of steel. For instance, about 12,000 tons of steel were used for constructing the Disney Concert Hall in  Los Angeles . The paint used for the vessel is 95,000 gallons (360,000 L), which is two times more than the quantity consumed for Golden Gate Bridge (re-painted annually). The electrical cables wiring the whole vessel are long 2484 ml (4000 km) which is enough to link  NYC  with  LA .

Regal was Carnival Corporation 's first liner with installed  Ocean Medallion  technology. The ship also hosted the company's largest gambling/slot tournament (USD 200,000) via a partnership with Scientific Games Corporation. The themed "Monopoly Cruise for Cash" onboard casino campaign was offered throughout 2018 (fleetwide). It culminated on the Regal ship in December, during the 7-day Eastern Caribbean cruise (itinerary Dec 9-16) roundtrip from Fort Lauderdale to St Maarten, Princess Cays and St Thomas.

In July 2019, Carnival Corporation placed to the Finnish marine engine producer Wartsila an equipment order for delivery and installation of a waste gasification system on Regal Princess. The technology is based on a self-fuelling thermal decomposition unit that provides safe (and sustainable) disposal of vessel's waste (contaminated, dry-burnable and hazardous materials) which is usually offloaded at seaport facilities. The new gasification system recovers energy from ship's waste heat (produced by thermal destruction) which additionally results in lower green gas emissions and energy savings. The system reduces vessel’s waste to ~5% (of its original volume) and produces a sterilized material (BioChar) which is recycled within the unit as fuel.

The vessel's powerplant includes four Wartsila marine diesel engines (model 46F, 2x 12V and 2x 14V) with combined power output 62,4 MW (83,700 hp). The propulsion system is based on two azipods with combined power output 18 MW (24,000 hp).

The ship has Fincantieri Monfalcone yard/hull number 6224, volume 142714 GT-tons, DWT-deadweight tonnage 12193 tons, LOA length 330 m, beam 38 m (max width 47 m/including the Navigation Bridge's wings), max draught 8,6 m.

‘The Real Love Boat’ announced today three crew members and 12 singles who will join hosts Rebecca Romijn and Jerry O’Connell on Princess Cruises’ Regal Princess as it sails through the Mediterranean.

The ship’s crew members include Captain Paolo Arrigo, who has been with Princess Cruises since 1996; bartender Ezra Freeman who has been with Princess since 2019, and a face that will be very familiar to Carnival Cruise Line guests — Matt Mitcham.

For 14 years, Mitcham served as a cruise director on Carnival Cruise Line, and was arguably the most popular cruise director in the Carnival fleet during his time with the cruise brand. Recently married, he met his wife — who also worked onboard — in 2016.

Participants in the show will experience the ups and downs of romance as they look to find a true love connection while visiting cities including Barcelona, Marseille, Rome, Santorini, and Athens.

Throughout the season, singles will embark on destination dates and compete in challenges to test couples’ compatibility and chemistry, while earning valuable rewards. The romantic waters will be tested when new participants come aboard, and those who don’t find a match will be left behind in port.

After nearly one month at sea, one winning couple will dock in the final port and take home a cash prize, plus a trip courtesy of Princess Cruises.

‘The Real Love Boat’ will premiere on Wednesday, October 5 on CBS, and will be available to stream live and on demand on Paramount+.

Once the lines let loose and the ship sets sail there's a group of talented folks engaging with our guests to keep the energy up to the wee hours of the morning. That group is our cruise staff made up of Assistant Cruise Directors (ACDs) and our entry level position, Junior Assistant Cruise Directors (JACDs). If the Cruise Director is the leader then this group is the pack. They might split to host a variety of activities during the day or come together to throw a killer party at night. Either way, where they go, so goes the action.

While most of our activities are taught through the many contracts you may experience with Princess, there are a few that Princess may provide special training to help you gain that extra bit of knowledge and experience. Zumba is a cornerstone of our experience and Princess proudly provides training for you, free of charge, either on board or in your hometown. In addition, we foot the bill for your membership for the months that you're on board. Ever gaze at the wonderment and beauty of the night sky? Princess proudly offers Stargazing at Sea, a popular event that is run by some of our trained and qualified cruise staff. How does one receive this training? You guessed it, provided by classroom and practical training on board our ships from a real life astronomer. And that's just skimming the surface!

ACDs are officers on board the vessel, reporting to the Cruise Director. As such, they receive their own cabin accommodations, competitive wage within our industry and great team member health benefits.

Oh…and then there's the part about seeing the world and having a ton of fun while you're doing it!

Much like the Captain at the wheel guiding our vessels from port to port, the Cruise Director drives the pulse of our entertainment onboard. More than simply informing the ship about events, the Cruise Director experiences the entertainment alongside our guests. They're hosting shows, activities & events inside and outside, morning and night. Each morning they host, and often creatively control, The Wake Show, our shipwide morning TV show. At night you'll see them doing the "Issac" at our Love Boat Disco Deck Party. They also guide the chair-spinning excitement of 'The Voice of the Ocean', ask the hilarious questions in our 'Marriage Match' game show and much, much more.

Cruise Directors at Princess truly are the face and the voice of our entertainment experience. They spend little time in the office checking emails or filling out reports. Rather, they are on the floor with our guests as they make their way through the cruise adventure. Reporting to the onboard Entertainment Director, our Cruise Directors have a small group of direct reports known as the Cruise Staff. Together they not only deliver the entertainment program but also dedicate time each voyage to create new activities to be implemented in a way that keeps our offerings fresh.

With all this in mind a Princess Cruise Director must be bursting with charisma and charm, seasoned with theatrical talent and experienced in the art of stage delivery. In addition they must possess a magnetic sense of humor both "off the cuff" and "on-script."

The Cruise Director is a senior officer position on the ship with a great wage, officer accommodations and a "4 months on, 2 months off" work schedule.

Yes…it's possibly the greatest job on earth!

The Entertainment Director is ultimately responsible for the entire entertainment offering onboard. As the entertainment programmer they work with managers to schedule shows, activities, parties & performances in a manner that benefits both guest enjoyment and revenue. Under the guidance of shore side management they work to ensure brand pillars are delivered with the utmost attention to detail. As an executive officer they work with the Captain and others to ensure entertainment is delivered safely according to the many governing bodies that protect vacations at sea. All of this through a strategic and analytical lens using data from various sources to guide the product.
