What Is an RV Mattress?

  • Buying an RV Mattress

Sleep plays a major role in our well-being and health at home, but it’s also essential for enjoying life on the road when traveling by an RV. An RV can fit standard mattress sizes , but there are also a number of custom mattress sizes just for your vehicle. Finding the right mattress size for your RV’s space can make all the difference in comfort and support. Read on to get details about how to shop for a great RV mattress.

An RV mattress is a bed custom fit to work in the bed space of an RV. Most RVs come with mattresses, but many owners prefer to buy a separate mattress since the included beds are often thin and can be uncomfortable. A regular mattress you sleep on at home is unlikely to fit since RVs are compact living spaces and the bed dimensions tend to be smaller.

When it comes to RV mattress sizes, most follow an industry standard. Still, some RV manufacturers have mattresses that are uniquely sized for the vehicle. Before buying, it’s always smart to measure for yourself or check the blueprint layout of your RV model. In general, expect to find your RV to have sleeping spaces in the sizes described below.

An RV bunk mattress is designed to sleep one individual and could be best suited for kids, though you’ll need to measure carefully because the dimensions vary considerably. A twin-size mattress at home measures 38 inches by 75 inches; an RV bunk mattress can range from 28 inches to 35 inches wide by 75 inches to 80 inches long.

An RV full is typically the same dimensions as a standard full mattress you’d sleep on at home. A full-size is best suited for an adult individual sleeper or a couple who doesn’t need room to spread out. The same goes for a three-quarters RV mattress which is the same length as a full mattress at 75 inches, but noticeably more narrow at 48 inches instead of 53 inches.

A queen- and king-size RV mattress are usually best suited for couples who like some space to spread out while sleeping. The industry standard for both of these is 80 inches in length. The queen measures 60 inches in width while the RV king comes in at 72 inches wide. Your RV might also come with a bed in a short king size which is the same width but shorter in length at 75 inches long.

What Should You Consider Before Buying an RV Mattress?

Before investing in a mattress for your RV, it’s important to take a few things into consideration to make sure you’re getting comfortable and restorative sleep while traveling.

RV size: The size of your RV will play a role in how large or compact your sleeping space will be. Some RVs come outfitted with one king-size bed while others have smaller sleeping spaces. Others combine one larger bed with bunk or twin-size mattresses to better accommodate families.

Number of sleepers: The number of sleepers traveling in your RV will also play a role in the size of the mattress. If you’re traveling as a couple, you can likely both sleep well on an RV queen mattress or an RV king mattress. But if you’re traveling with kids or grandkids, you’ll want to ensure there’s space for them in single beds or bunks.

Sleepers’ sizes: If you’ve ever slept on a mattress that’s too small for your size, you know how uncomfortable that can be. The size of each sleeper in the RV will play a large role in what size mattress they feel the most comfortable on. Keep in mind that kids and grandkids might need larger beds as they grow.

Sleeping style: If you prefer to spread out when sleeping at home, you’ll want space to spread out when sleeping in an RV too. It’s also worth considering if you’ll share the mattress with a partner, kids, or pets. Most people who share the mattress with others feel more comfortable on a larger mattress.

Mattress price: The price of your RV mattress will depend on the materials you prefer and the size. Usually, the larger the mattress, the higher the price. Some mattress materials often come at a higher price, too, like latex and hybrid mattresses . In general, foam mattresses tend to be the most budget-friendly.

Can I Use a Normal Mattress in My RV?

Depending on the sleeping space in your RV, you might be able to use a normal mattress in your RV. A standard queen mattress , for example, measures 60 inches by 80 inches. Some RVs, but not all, use the same measurements. Before getting a new mattress for your RV, measure the space since not all RV manufacturers consider queen or king to be the same size. Winnebago, for example, considers an RV queen mattress to measure 60 inches by 80 inches, which is the same size as a queen mattress in a residential home. Jayco, however, has RV queen beds in two different dimensions, 60 inches by 70 inches and also 60 inches by 80 inches. Winnebago considers a king RV mattress to measure 72 inches by 80 inches while Thor measures a king at 72 inches by 76 inches.

If considering a standard mattress for your RV it is worth reading the fine print on your mattress’s warranty to ensure sleeping on it in your RV won’t void the warranty.

Where To Buy an RV Mattress

Depending on the RV mattress size you’re after, you might be able to buy the mattress from a popular brand like Avocado , Saatva , or Purple . Some RVs have sleeping spaces that match with a standard residential mattress. Others, you’ll need to shop for a custom RV mattress. Regardless, you should have the option to choose between foam, hybrid or innerspring to make sure sleeping in your RV is as comfortable as possible.

Is It Time to Upgrade Your RV Furniture?

At some point, we have to upgrade our RV furniture. Perhaps you notice that small tear in your couch, or maybe the style isn’t what you wanted in a recreational home. Whatever the case, updating your RV’s interior can become an exciting way to spice up your travel lifestyle!

If you are considering upgrading your motorhome but don’t know where to start, this guide is for you. Continue reading to learn more about what to consider before replacing your RV furniture, along with basic steps to get started.

Signs Your RV Furniture Needs Replacing

Every piece of  RV furniture diminishes both in quality and usability. Here are five considerations to think about when deciding whether you should replace your RV furniture or not.

How comfortable is your furniture?

The point of RV traveling is to provide a new sense of freedom while retaining access to home-based conveniences. For this, you need quality seats and sofas that don’t force you to wiggle your body as you try to find the perfect posture. For example, hard couches can result in a sore back or other physical pain.

What’s the overall condition?

Has it become difficult to avoid those springs popping out of your furniture? Maybe you’ve already noticed that your underlying foam is severely damaged. If you notice that your interior items have bends, cracks, or are showing signs of being worn down, it might be time to upgrade your furniture to something more durable.

How much space do you have?

RV floor plans come in several different forms. Some prioritize entertainment space, while others maximize sleeping space. Regardless, you may find that your floor plan and your furniture don’t provide you with proper space. If your furniture is too big, you end up cluttering the interior. If you opt to go down the replacement route, have your items built to your exact specifications.

Are you seeking a new style?

No, it doesn’t sound silly to consider the overall look of your RV furniture. Perhaps your newly-purchased vehicle comes with couches and beds that have dull colors. In this case, get creative and spice up your interior setting with decorated furniture in the form of colorful cushions, seats, etc.

How much weight are you carrying?

It comes as no surprise that your furniture adds a lot of weight to your RV. Like any vehicle, there is a limit to how much your recreational home can handle. If you exceed your Gross Vehicle Weight Rating , it might be time to replace your items with lighter ones. You can also get rid of some items. You certainly don’t want to jeopardize your family’s safety by going over the cargo limit.

Tips on Upgrading Your RV Furniture

If you decide that your RV furniture needs an upgrade, follow these tips to simplify the process and get the most out of your new selections.

Decide what you want

This tip is a no-brainer. The last thing you want is to walk around aimlessly inside a store, not knowing what furnishings you should get. Are you looking for RV-specific furniture or home-style options? Are you good with your hands? If so, consider buying assemble-yourself furniture. This will save you the trouble of carrying heavy items inside your RV.

Measure every item

This goes back to the idea of ensuring you maintain proper space inside your vehicle. Take the time to thoroughly measure every item you select. The key is figuring out where your furniture will go, how much space it will take up, and whether or not the location makes it convenient for everyday use.

Check out reviews

The last thing you need is to purchase a double recliner sofa, only to find that most of the Google reviews are two stars and under. Upgrading your furniture is a major investment. Make an effort to assess all of your options so you can select furniture that is both satisfying and comfortable in the long run.

Sell your old furniture

Instead of throwing away your old furniture, sell it. There are plenty of retailers, online marketplaces, and wholesalers where you can sell your items and make some quick money. Best of all, you can use your earnings to invest in new furniture that won’t completely drain your wallet.

Take your time

This is the best tip you can follow. Never rush through your options. Finding the right furniture that suits your needs, traveling lifestyle, and interior space takes time. Assess your options so you can end up with the best selections and spend more time enjoying nature in a motorhome .

Upgrade Your RV Lifestyle

Finding the right RV furniture takes time and effort. If you need a recreational vehicle, Cruise America can get you started with one of our state-of-the-art motorhomes.

We offer different-sized RV rentals and pre-owned RVs with home-style amenities, including a shower, air conditioners, and a kitchen. Now you can forget about last-minute packing concerns.
