History & Politics

Berlin’s history spans eight centuries, there is so much one can do. To help you get a picture of the possibilities we’ve gathered a selection of tour ideas based in and around Berlin.

  • The Reformation (16c.)
  • Unification of Germany (19c.)
  • Germany at War (20c.)

Lutherstadt Wittenberg

For this tour we will travel to Lutherstadt Wittenberg the home of Martin Luther and the Protestant Reformation. The nearby Monastery of St. Augustine is where Luther lived for a time as a monk.

We’ll combine this with a visit to the Wartburg Castle which sits on an outcrop above the town of Eisenach. This is where Luther famously went into hiding following his excommunication by Pope Leo X.

Lutherhaus Reformation Museum

The permanent exhibition at the Luther House offers an encounter with the time of the Reformation. Approximately 1000 original items not only tell the life and work of the reformer Luther, but also his family life and his influence on history.

St. Augustine's Monastery in Erfurt

The 700 year old monastery is closely linked to Martin Luther and the Reformation. Both as a place that he lived and a centre from which his teachings were promoted.

Wartburg Castle

From May 1521 to March 1522, Martin Luther stayed at the castle following his excommunication from the church. It was during this period that Luther translated the New Testament from ancient Greek into German in just ten weeks.

The unification of Germany into the German Empire, a Prussian-dominated nation state with federal features, officially occurred on 18 January 1871 at the Palace of Versailles in France. Princes of most of the German states gathered there to proclaim King Wilhelm I of Prussia as German Emperor during the Franco-Prussian War.

A confederated realm of German princedoms, along with some adjacent lands, had been in existence for over a thousand years, dating to the Treaty of Verdun in 843. However, there was no German national identity in development until the late 18c.

Deutsches Historisches Museum

The DHM, as it's known, is the museum for German history, with collections spanning the story of the German people from pre-history to modern times.

Gruenderzeit Walking Tour & the Museum Island

There's no better way to get a feel for a city, that to get out and walk about. We'll take you through the heart of old Berlin with a knowledgable local guide.

The Gründerzeit was a period in the mid to late 19th century in which Germany experienced an economic boom.

Potsdam: Sanssouci & the Dutch Quarter

A key figure in the story of the rise of Germany and a European power is King Frederick the Great of Prussia. A visit to his summer palace, Sansouci, is a must. This rococo style palace is often compared to the palace at Versailles, but is smaller and more intimate.

Weimar Republic hyper-inflation

The first half of the 20th century was marked by war for Germany. Political and societal tensions boiled over into bloodshed of an epic scale. The inter-war years were not much better, with economic collapse and widespread poverty.

It was, however, also a time of great upheaval in political thought and societal norms, in which Germany moved from an absolutist monarchy to a social democracy (with much in between).

Topography of Terror

This excellent museum, built on the site of the Gestapo and SS headquarters during the Nazi regime, houses three permanent exhibitions. They focus on the central institutions of the SS and police in the "Third Reich", the crimes they perpetrated throughout Europe, and the propaganda and terror of National Socialist policy in Berlin and its consequences for the city and its population.

House of the Wannsee Conference

The site of the infamous Wannsee Conference. It is here that, in 1942, leading figures in the Nazi government and SS meet to discuss their so-called Final Solution to the Jewish Question.

Tour of the Reichstag Building

The home of German democracy, it was opened in 1894 and housed the Imperial Diet until 1933, when it was set on fire in the fateful events leading up to the take over of power by the Nazis.

After reunification in 1990, refurbishment and restoration of the damage it had sustained during the second world war took place, and it is now the seat of the Bundestag, the German lower house of parliament.

Art & Culture

Berlin is a hotbed of constantly evolving cultural activity. Get in touch and we can discuss what the latest must-see activities are.

Bauhaus (German for ‘building house’), was a German art school operational from 1919 to 1933 that combined crafts and the fine arts. The school became famous for its approach to design, which attempted to unify the principles of mass production with individual artistic vision and strove to combine aesthetics with everyday function.

Brutalism & Socialist Realism

Berlin’s unique history as a divided city and showcase for both east and west has left it with some great examples of mid 20th century architecture.

Contemporary Street Art

Berlin is a magnet for international street artists. This is in part due to the history of the once divided city. Thierry Noir, among many others, made the former “Anti-Fascist Wall” that divided the city a little more colourful. But there are other particularly good examples, including the East Side Gallery near Warschauer Brücke and the giant murals painted on the sides of residential buildings dotted around the city.

Experience Berlin like never before

with local, experienced and certified guides

Why Berlin?

Berlin is considered today to be one of the most exciting cities in the world. Its history passes through the most important phases of modern history; and its present is an exhilarating combination of avant-garde culture, complex identity issues and preservation of historical landmarks. Berlin, like no other city, stands for the main events of the 20th Century; it was the capital of the Third Reich and the atrocities of the Nazi regime and it exemplifies the Cold War, which divided the world for over 40 years.

We are experienced, qualified, educated academics that guide for years out of passion to the city and love for people and history. We have been ranked top 5 TripAdvisor tour-companies for 6 years consecutively.
