Ohio's capital city of Columbus is an artsy and sporty cosmopolitan city with Midwestern roots. You will find activities and destinations that pay homage to the state's agricultural industry, and sections of neighborhoods made up of dozens of ethnic groups making their first homes in America.

What this means for visitors trying to plan an itinerary is that you can visit a world-class art museum or catch a live fashion show one minute, and fill a basket of just-picked produce from a local farmers market the next.

It means that you can cheer on NHL's Columbus Blue Jackets for the win or catch a fly-ball during a Columbus Clipper's baseball game at Huntington Park, then grab dinner at one of the many local ethnic restaurants representing more than 40 nationalities.

ONE-DAY ITINERARY

Things to Do in One Day in Columbus: If your trip is a quick one in the capital city, it is best to start in the downtown area then expand into the nearby neighborhoods of the Short North to the north and German Village to the south, if time permits.

Start with a visit in the heart of the city at the Ohio Statehouse. There are regular free tours offered daily, or you can explore the Capital Square complex on your own. The outside grounds are filled with statues, monuments, and hidden finds like a small bee aviary on one side of the statehouse.

The statehouse museum gift shop has unique Ohio-made treasures to take home with you. Walk a few blocks to the Scioto Mile along the riverfront and grab lunch from a local food truck vendor as you enjoy the Scioto River from one of the many benches located along the green space.

If you want to stay in the heart of downtown, you can spend the rest of the day at one of the top attractions in the city , the National Veterans Memorial and Museum, and catch an afternoon baseball game at Huntington Park .

This district is a pedestrian-friendly area, so you can spend an afternoon here and stop for a coffee or bite to eat at one of the local eateries before taking a stroll in Goodale Park. Make your way to the historic North Market, where you can buy fresh produce, baked goods, cheeses, and ethnic food from local vendors.

Another great half-day option is in German Village, where you can walk the brick side streets to boutique shops and cafés. You can get a take-out lunch at one of the notable German Village restaurants, like The Thurman Cafe or Katzinger's Deli, and head to Schiller Park to enjoy a picnic. Spend the afternoon at the Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens, where you can experience every biome in the world in a single visit or take a glass-blowing class. Cap off the day with a Broadway performance at the historic Ohio Theatre .

Day 2 Things to Do: With added time in your itinerary, spend your next day exploring the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium . If it is summertime, you can also enjoy Zoombezi Bay water park, which is popular with families. The zoo is consistently ranked as one of the top in the United States, with exciting animal encounter exhibits and demonstrations throughout the sprawling grounds.

While a zoo visit will take up most of the day, you can leave time to explore some of the nearby suburbs, which have great parks and social areas, like Ballantrae Park in Dublin , or stop by a farmers market in historic downtown Powell .

Another full-day excursion that you can plan is at the Ohio History Center and Ohio Village , which are both located in the same complex. The Ohio Village is an outdoor living history museum designed to look like a late 1800s village. There are special events at the village throughout the year, but it is fun to visit anytime.

If you are lucky, you might catch the Ohio Village Muffins baseball team in action in vintage uniforms and playing by the rules of the game from the late 19 th century. The Ohio History Center located next to the village has several floors of indoor exhibits about Ohio history.

Stop at one of the Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams locations in town for an unforgettable dessert, like pistachio and honey ice-cream using all farm-sourced ingredients.

THREE-DAY ITINERARY

Day 1 & Day 2

If your visit to Columbus extends to three days, you will be able cover the best of the must-see attractions and food while working in some extra opportunities to enjoy the city. You can follow Day 1 and Day 2 itineraries as they suit your interests.

Day 3 Things to Do : Since you will likely cover the heart of downtown and possibly the fringe of the downtown area, Day 3 is your chance to explore the two premier shopping and entertainment complexes at Easton and Polaris. Both have expansive shopping opportunities in multi-level malls and adjacent outdoor shopping plazas.

Easton Town Center is east of downtown with more than 300 top retailers like Apple, Tiffany & Co., American Girl dolls, Nordstrom, and more. There is a 30-theater cinema with dine-in movie options, a comedy house, and outdoor concerts in the summer. Polaris Fashion Place is an indoor-outdoor shopping complex with more than 200 retailers and locally owned boutique stores with Ohio-made products. The Polaris area stretches beyond the main mall complex and down the street into satellite shopping centers. This area also has a Cabela's and IKEA.

If you are not in the shopping mood and looking for another all-day alternative you can enjoy the Center of Science and Industry (COSI) in downtown. COSI is a main fixture along the riverfront and a popular attraction for families. It is a Columbus staple that features interactive and hands-on science education.

Take a ride on the High Wire Unicycle to test your fear of heights as you pedal along an 84-foot cable suspended two-stories in the air. Just outside of COSI on the Scioto River, you can take a guided kayak trip on the Scioto River in the summer, or head to nearby Scioto Audubon Metro Park to tackle the climbing wall and outdoor recreation area.

Where to Eat: There are several local restaurants with a long history in Columbus that are must-trys if you have extra time in the city. Take on the Thurmanator Challenge at The Thurman Café in German Village.

Anyone who can finish the mammoth 12-ounce burger surrounded by a bun, mayo, lettuce, pickle, tomato, sautéed mushrooms, banana peppers, ham, onions, and cheese between the buns gets serious respect and bragging rights around town. While the Thurmanator Challenge is famous at the café, they also have delicious regular-sized burgers.

Another local favorite with a long history in Columbus is Dirty Frank's Hot Dog Palace . You dream up the dog-Dirty Frank's has it. You can choose from more than 50 a-la-carte toppings or put all 50 on your hot dog.

Even vegans can enjoy a wide menu at Dirty Frank's, as most items come in a vegetarian option. The restaurant is a fun visit beyond the delicious dogs, as there is a vibrant collection of pop art along the walls.

Columbus unveils new tourism campaign amidst major urban developments

C olumbus is not just expanding; it's looking to explode into national consciousness with a new tourism campaign unveiled Thursday night during the TourismUS annual meeting at the Columbus Museum of Art.

The event, hosted by Experience Columbus in conjunction with U.S. Travel Association’s National Travel and Tourism Week, brought together industry professionals and civic leaders to spotlight Columbus's growing influence in the travel and tourism sector.

Experience Columbus President and CEO Brian Ross announced the new "yes, Columbus" campaign, an initiative that seeks to reshape perceptions and entice visitors with the city's vibrant culture and unexpected attractions.

"This campaign is a declaration that Columbus is ready to emerge from the shadows of other major Midwest cities," Ross said. "It's right for the moment we’re in and for the foreseeable future."

The campaign, Ross and other speakers noted, is a concerted effort to firmly stamp Columbus' name on the map, with the goal of continuing to bolster tourism.

According to the latest data from Longwoods International, Columbus welcomed a staggering 51.2 million visitors in 2023, a record for the city, generating over $8.2 billion in local business revenue.

These visits had a broad impact, supporting approximately 82,568 jobs and generating significant tax revenues that bolster local services and development.

The evening also recognized key contributors to Columbus’s tourism industry. The inaugural Best of US Awards celebrated individuals and organizations that have significantly enriched the city’s hospitality and tourism landscape. Notable recipients included Stonewall Columbus, Inc., The Junto, Historic Trolley District, Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, and Joe Kapferer, each praised for their innovative and inclusive efforts.

Ross, along with other city leaders, spoke on future initiatives set to transform Columbus into a more vibrant, attractive destination.

"Let's talk about what's next for Columbus," Ross said during his presentation.

He detailed several urban developments that promise to redefine the cityscape. Among these is the Capital Line, a new two-mile pathway dedicated to bike and pedestrian traffic that will connect key amenities, green spaces, and job centers across downtown Columbus.

Ross also discussed the significant economic and civic benefits expected from several key projects, including the LinkUS transportation initiative, a comprehensive $2 billion expansion of the local airport, and the creation of a new fashion innovation hub.

According to Greg Davies, CEO of Downtown Columbus Inc, as Columbus embarks on these ambitious projects, the city is set to not only enhance its appeal as a tourist destination but also enrich the lives of its residents.

"There's never been a more exciting time to be in Columbus." Davies said.

When it's time for a meal, Bodega serves up snacks, sandwiches (like its famous grilled cheese) and craft beer (47 varieties), while Northstar Café offers unique items made with organic ingredients; its menu also features several vegan and vegetarian options. Meanwhile, upscale options include the Spanish atmosphere and tapas at Barcelona and the Italian plates and extensive wine lists at Basi Italia and  Marcella's . And visitors, locals and experts say you can't leave Columbus without sampling some of Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams . The popular national brand opened its first shop in Columbus in 2002 and dishes out uniquely flavored scoops, such as darkest chocolate, brambleberry crisp and wildberry lavender, in several locations across the city.

Indianola Avenue Complete Streets

Indianola avenue complete streets study.

UPDATES - APRIL 2024 Indianola Avenue will be repaved and restriped in 2025 as part of an urban repaving project in partnership with the Ohio Department of Transportation. The project was originally scheduled for 2024, but has been delayed due to right-of-way acquisition for sidewalk repairs that were added to the project. Some sections of sidewalk are outside of the city’s public right-of-way and must be purchased from adjacent landowners in order to be replaced.

PROJECT OVERVIEW

In response to public feedback, the section between Weber Road and Midgard Road will be reconfigured to accommodate additional on-street parking spaces, while still maintaining continuous bike lanes. The two-way left turn lane will be removed in this section to allow for more on-street parking spaces to serve local businesses. A northbound buffered bike lane will be added between Hudson and Arcadia, connecting to an existing bike lane on the west side of Hudson Street. An existing bike route on Arcadia Avenue will connect the Indianola bike lanes to the Summit Street cycle track. Bike lanes will continue north of Arcadia Avenue to Oakland Park Avenue. With the new configuration, 48 on-street parking spaces will be available to patrons, residents, and visitors between Weber Road and Midgard Road. ADA Accessible Parking spaces, loading zone spaces, and bike parking will also be designated within the business district, though the number of spaces is yet to be determined. All on-street parking spaces on Indianola Avenue will be available at all times of the day, without peak time restrictions. The addition of bike lanes on Indianola Avenue will fill a significant network gap and provide over 7 miles of continuous bike facilities from Downtown to Morse Road. Reducing the number of travel lanes and providing a bike facility will also help to improve safety and meet the goals of Vision Zero Columbus. Sidewalks between Weber Road and Midgard Road will be improved primarily on the east side of Indianola Avenue. Additional sidewalk locations will be assessed for improvement on the west side of Indianola Avenue north of Milford Avenue. High visibility crosswalks will be added at Cliffside Drive, Crestview Road, Milford Avenue, Walhalla Road, and all signalized intersections between Hudson Street and Oakland Park Avenue. Two bump-outs will be added at Milford Avenue and on the west-side of Indianola Avenue at Crestview Road and Walhalla Road. ABOUT THE STUDY The Indianola Avenue Complete Streets Study area encompasses portions of Clintonville and the University District. Indianola Avenue, also designated as U.S. Route 23, is a major thoroughfare traversing north and south in the north central region of the city. The study will examine the current traffic conditions in the corridor, taking into consideration connections to non-motorized transportation uses such as trails, sidewalks, and bikeways. A complete streets approach will balance the needs of different roadway users to:

• Create a design that encourages motorists to drive at safe and reasonable travel speeds
• Improve the pedestrian experience and create better bikeway connections
• Accommodate safe and reliable transit service through the corridor
• Develop a parking strategy that reasonably meets the needs of businesses, patrons, and residents

RTMC Mobility Study

About the study.

The Renner Rd/Trabue Rd/McKinley Rd corridor (RTMC) serves multiple communities on Columbus west side. Additionally, it provides connectivity to Downtown Columbus, US-33, I-70, and I-670. Like many corridors across the city of Columbus, the RTMC corridor is experiencing significant growth and development brining increased pressure on the transportation network.

In response to these growing pains, as well as pre-existing challenges on the corridor, the City of Columbus is undertaking a mobility study that will comprehensively and holistically study the corridor. This study will result in realistic strategies, both long term and short term, to support the areas continued economic vitality, improve health and safety, and access to employment opportunities.

The RTMC Mobility Study will be completed in two phases. Phase 1 was completed in late fall 2021. Phase 2 is currently underway and is expected to be completed by spring 2023.

EASTMOOR BLVD SAFETY AND MOBILITY IMPROVEMENTS

  ABOUT THE STUDY

Eastmoor Blvd (Main St to Broad St) was studied from November 2021 through November 2022 due to resident concerns with speeding. The study aimed to improve safety, reduce vehicle speeds, and accommodate non-motorized users. The overall result of the study is a plan for the roadway to improve safety for all users and provide more options for active transportation users.

PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT

The project team presented initial findings and potential design solutions at the Eastmoor Civic Association’s Semiannual Community Meeting on Wednesday, May 11, 2022. This meeting was advertised through the Civic Association and through flyers placed at every household on Eastmoor Blvd in the study area.

At that time, we received the following public feedback:

• Speeding is a concern
• Want slower traffic to be able to walk and bike
• Important to maintain the character of the street
• Desire four-way stop at Fair Ave
• Concern over loss of parking and drainage impacts

Following the May meeting, the project team developed several alternatives including a preferred alternative that most closely aligned with the public feedback and presented these at the Eastmoor Civic Association Meeting on November 2, 2022. The preferred alternative consisted of striping changes to visually narrow the roadway to reduce vehicular speeds so that people could still walk and bike on-street, while also maintaining a majority of the on-street parking.

ALL-WAY STOP CONTROL ANALYSIS

An evaluation was completed for the intersections of Eastmoor Boulevard & Fair Avenue and Eastmoor Boulevard & Bexley Park to determine if the traffic circles could be removed and All-Way Stop Control be installed. Section 2B.07 of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) contains volume thresholds that should be met to warrant multi-way stop control.  Based on this analysis, All-Way Stop Control is not warranted at these two intersections and is not recommended. The All-Way-Stop-Control Warrants memorandum can be found in the Documents tab below.

The first phase of the preferred alternative was implemented in fall of 2023. The primary goal for the first phase is to visually narrow the roadway with painted lines to reduce vehicle speeds. The City is monitoring traffic speeds following the striping changes (average speeds shown below). The medium and long term solutions following the striping changes include installing medians and/or speed humps – however, this would require additional community support and a funding source.

The City will be continually collecting speed and volume data on Eastmoor Blvd to track the impacts of the restriping project throughout 2024 to inform future design decisions. The table below shows 24-hour counts for a typical day in the month and year listed. Speeds have decreased in the section between Main St and Bexley Park Rd, stayed relatively the same from Elbern Ave to Dale Ave, and have increased between Medway Ave to Elbern Ave. However, since installation of the striping changes, the average speeds have continued to decrease in this section.

About the Study The City of Columbus along with a consultant team led by MS Consultants is beginning a study of the Gender Road corridor.  This study will develop a plan for improvements to the Gender Road corridor from Winchester Pike to Brice Road. The study includes transportation and traffic research, traffic analysis, and a feasibility study to result in projects that will improve safety, implement complete street improvements, and accommodate future development.

We need your help!  Your input will help shape the corridor’s future design.  Please take a few minutes to let us know your thoughts about traveling along Gender Road.  This survey will take about 5 minutes and your responses will remain anonymous.  Information gathered in this survey will assist the consultant team by identifying issues as well as opportunities for improvements along the corridor.  Results will be shared in a public meeting planned for early spring 2023.

Amusement Parks

• Located off the shores of Lake Erie in Sandusky, Cedar Point is known as the roller coaster capital of the world. Columbus Crew fans to travel to Mexico for Concacaf Final

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX) — The countdown is on for the Crew to play in what's considered one of the biggest matches in team history, the Concacaf Champions Cup Final.

This Saturday night, the team is taking on C.F. Pachuca in Mexico.

Hundreds of fans are expected to travel from central Ohio to Mexico to cheer on the Crew.

"It’s fun watching him become his own little fan," said Kurtis Rousch, who is making the trip with his son, Elliott. "The championship game is the day before his 10th birthday, and being such a huge fan, we thought this is so serendipitous we just had to get a chance to go and celebrate the team in what's one of the biggest games in team history."

Elliott predicts the Crew will win 2-3. The almost 10-year-old said his favorite part of a game is when the Crew scores.

Elliott and his dad will be joining the Nordecke and other fans for a full day Saturday. The group is filling three charter buses to head from Mexico City to the match in Pachuca, and they're stopping at a sight along the way. Then, they'll spend the night at a hotel in Pachuca after the match and travel back to Mexico City in the buses Sunday.

"It has been incredible to see the growth that the team has and the amount of interest in the city right now," said Kevin Clark, Nordecke's Travel Deputy.

Clark said he's expecting about 200 Crew fans in the stands in Pachuca.

"This is one of the biggest games in Columbus Crew history," said Clark. "It would be an unprecedented end to an unprecedented type of run in this tournament, and in that respect, I’m not surprised that we’re getting a good amount of people that want to go."

Clark said there is still some room on a bus to travel with the group from Mexico City to Pachuca. Tickets for the bus and hotel can be purchased on Nordecke's website .

"It would just be an incredible thing for the city to be able to celebrate this and for the Crew to be able to qualify for the expanded Club World Cup next year, where they’d be playing alongside the giants from Brazil and Europe," Clark said.

A win would also be the icing on top of the cake for Elliott.

"Looking forward to the Crew lifting that trophy," he said.

For fans not traveling to Mexico, there's a watch party in Columbus at Lower.com Field's Chase Plaza. It starts at 8 p.m., and kick-off is at 9:15. Tickets for the watch party can be purchased on Ticketmaster.

The staff of these colorful gardens and beautiful conservatory work very hard to bring to life its 88 acres of landscaped grounds. They are especially glorious to visit in the spring when you will see hundreds of vibrantly hued bulbs start to show their pretty heads to the world.

No season is without its own advantages though, and in the winter an evergreen tree display and lush winter foliage are the name of the game. This is a super place for all the family to enjoy having a stroll around.

The kids will love seeing the pretty resident butterflies and fish pond. There is also a nice café on the grounds too, together with a gift shop for you to buy some mementoes of your visit.

2. North Market Farmer’s Market

This is one of the largest Farmer’s Markets in Central Ohio and also one of its oldest!

The array of fresh produce that the local growers put out on display is absolutely awesome, with over 20 farmers selling their appetizing home cultivated fruit and vegetables, plants, flowers, honey and aromatic herbs.

There are also amazing cuisine options if you and your family want to stop for a bite to eat and drink which cover food selections from various global regions, and all delicious!

3. Ohio Theatre

This wonderful, 1928 historic theatre was luckily saved from demolition and completely restored to its old glory in the 1980s, with the theatre’s stage modernized to allow for the fabulous performances it now puts on, which include anything from musicals to ballet and opera, and from lectures to fun presentations like the summer Movie Series and Broadway Series held every year.

Whether you and your family adore the symphony (with concerts by the Columbus Symphony Orchestra), love seeing the Nutcracker performances at Christmas, or relaxing over an evening of old movies, a visit here should tick all the boxes for everyone!

4. Ohio Stadium

Ohio Stadium fondly referred to as The Horseshoe or “The House that Harley built” or “The Shoe”, is Ohio State University’s football stadium and home to Ohio State Buckeyes football team as well as the Ohio State University Marching Band.

Besides all of that, it is also a popular concert venue, with famous bands like Metallica and The Rolling Stones drawing in the crowds with their exuberant performances. With a seating capacity of just under 105,000 it’s the third largest football stadium in the United States.

The Stadium really is a landmark and worth a visit just to soak up the atmosphere alone! The food and beverages are good enough to deserve a mention too!

5. Short North Arts District

This is a really interesting neighborhood to visit, take a stroll and stop for a coffee or a bite to eat. Because of the university influence the area is often described as offbeat and just that little bit out of the ordinary, with lots of quirky specialty shops, pubs, art galleries and cafés to explore.

The architecture of the buildings is worthy of note too, most of the brick buildings dating back to the early 20th century which blend nicely with the colorful murals painted on their side walls.

The area is all within easy walking distance and very close to downtown. A great way to spend an afternoon!

6. German Village

German Village is named as such because of the large number of German immigrants who moved to the area in the mid 19th century and seemingly brought a piece of home with them! In fact at one time it was made up of a third of the city’s population.

It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974 and draws an abundance of visitors who relish the taste of something a little ‘European’ from one of the area’s many coffee shops, confectionaries, groceries and restaurants such as Sausage Haus and Katz’s Deli.

As you wander through the narrow streets with the feel of cobblestones under your feet you’re sure to feel you’re in some interesting far flung destination!

7. ZipZone Canopy Tours

This is an amazing opportunity to come into contact with the city’s natural beauty, with a choice of two tours, one lasting an hour and a half and the other, two hours.

The newest shorter tour features two zip lines, two sky bridges and the choice of either a free fall quick jump experience, or a rappel. The longer tour is made up of smaller groups in which you’ll enjoy zipping along enjoying unparalleled views of wildlife and flowers and fauna.

8. Center of Science and Industry (COSI)

The COSI is really popular with families in particular, as the interactive exhibits, awesome planetarium shows and lots more have been devised to inspire the little ones’ interest in science and technology.

New exhibits are rotated on a regular basis so there’s always something new and of interest to see. The entire top floor is dedicated for ages “Birth to First Grade” with plenty of room to run around in.

And don’t worry, your older kids will find plenty to occupy themselves with as well, with plenty of hands on activities aimed at all levels of learning.

9. Whetstone Park / Park of Roses

This renowned park has been in existence for over 60 years, its aromatic 13 acre Park of Roses displaying over 11,000 roses, and showcasing an amazing 350 different assortment of beautiful varieties of this splendid flower.

The best time to appreciate these glorious flowers is mid June through to mid September, when the roses are in full bloom. But there is still plenty to see at other times of the year too, of course; there are lots of trails to walk and run through as well as plenty of space for your kids to kick a few soccer balls around as well as a nice playground for your little ones.

A lovely touch are the many benches that are placed throughout the park in honor of deceased loved ones.

10. Easton Town Center

This shopping complex is a shopping center with a difference! The main buildings and streets have been constructed to look like the early American cities and towns of early to mid 20th century and include fountains with streets cleverly laid out in a continuous loop (getting you easily to why you’re there in the first place, to enjoy some shopping!).

As well as regular shops, the center features a cinema complex with dine in movies, and plenty of shops to keep the whole family busy, from Macys for mom, Golf Galaxy for dad and American Girl, Lego Store and Justice for the kids.

There are lots of terrific restaurants and cafes too, including perennial favorite, The Cheesecake Factory. You’ll be able to see why Easton attracts over 25 million visitors a year!

11. Scioto Mile

Scioto Mile is 145 acres of gorgeous flourishing parkland, and popular with locals and visitors alike for strolling or biking along its integrated system which connects down to the Scioto River.

Making a lovely afternoon for all the family, along the way you’ll be able to enjoy the city’s fantastic 15,000 sq ft interactive fountain in which your kids can have great fun splashing around, the country’s biggest outdoors climbing wall, and the 120 acre Scioto Audubon, from where you’ll be able to spot a multitude of shore birds.

There are also events including free concerts in the summer to enjoy, making this a super place for a family picnic!

12. Kelton House Museum & Garden

A visit to Kelton House will be a fascinating step back into time as you tour through this beautiful mansion. It was built by Fernando Cortez Kelton, a well to do wholesaler of pharmaceuticals and dry goods whose family remained as the continuous residents for about 120 years, through the Victorian era.

The house itself is of architecturally interest with the docents happy to fill you in on the family’s involvement with the abolitionist movement. The basement has also very good information all about the Underground Railroad.

The gardens are of particular beauty with well maintained hedges, lattice work and interesting plants. During the holiday season the museum is decorated with traditional Victorian ornaments.

13. Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum

This is one of the most interesting and unusual attractions, guaranteed to keep the family highly interested! Once known as the Cartoon Research Library and Museum and now named after the popular cartoonist Billy Ireland.

The Museum houses the world’s largest academic research facility showcasing printed and original comic strips, cartoon art and also editorial cartoons.

Covering everything from daily and Sunday strips to comic books, magazine cartoons and sports cartoons, the venue houses at least 450,000 original cartoons along with 51,000 serial titles and 36.000 books, so there is bound to be something to appeal to everyone. Dads in particular will no doubt enjoy the WWII comic collection.

14. Columbus Museum of Art

The Columbus Museum of Art is a wonderful attraction for the whole family to enjoy. There is a fabulous children’s area, and free admission on Sundays. The kids can get busy with the Lego exhibits and other toys designed specifically for creative play, while the rest of the family can appreciate the wonderful works of art on display.

There is also a vast range of locally handmade objects together with unusual delights from around the world to look through. The café is of particular popularity so treat the family to a meal after your explorations!

15. Topiary Park

This is such a clever and pretty little park, and certainly worth a stop! Both clever and pretty at the same time, because it has managed to put together nature and art, all in its own magical way.

The theme of the park is the living sculptural interpretation of Georges Seurat’s Post-Impressionist Painting ‘A Sunday Afternoon on the Isle of La Grand Jatte’ and is the only known topiary representation of a painting.

As you walk through the garden you can see the 54 human figures, eight boats, a monkey, three dogs and a cat, each 12ft tall and made of yew. Besides the amazing topiary display the park also houses over 220 trees and carefully tended flowerbeds. There are plenty of – real live! – ducks around for the kids to feed, too.

16. Graeter’s Ice Cream

It would be very hard to imagine anyone not being interested in ice cream, be it eating it, making it or just counting the choice of flavors available!

Graeter’s Ice Cream Factory began its ice cream journey in 1868 in Cincinnati and is famous not only for its delicious ice cream but also because it is the only commercial ice cream maker in the world that uses French Pot freezers, with its two gallon batches being the smallest in the industry.

Sadly, tours of this famous factory have finished but the ice cream is still wonderful and when you drop by to savor one of the yummy offerings (black raspberry chocolate chip is still a major favorite).

17. American Whistle Corp

Have fun with the family taking a tour with a difference; a whistle tour. (I could have gone a bit corny on you and said whistle stop tour, but thought better of it!).

Often taken for granted, whistles are used in so many different areas of life from police officers to sports coaches, and by taking a tour of the American Whistle Corp you will learn how and why whistles were made thousands of years ago and also find out how a medieval version was used to alert of imminent attacks during the Crusades.

The modern era of whistle use started in 1878 and you’ll be told more about this too as you are shown around by the very knowledgeable guides. Tours last around 45 minutes.

18. Huntington Park

If you’re more Josh Donaldson than Tom Brady, why not drop into Huntington Park, baseball stadium home to the Columbus Clippers, Triple A minor league partners of the Cleveland Indians.

This pleasant little ballpark is a super area and very reasonable for families, offering both free entry on Wednesdays and free membership at any time for your kids. Also, the games here are interactive enough to keep your toddlers entertained.

Have a picnic on the lawns or, if your kids are busy having fun playing ball, enjoy some time in the lively upstairs bar area.

19. The Southern Theatre

This historic theater opened in September, 1896 and is the oldest surviving theater in Central Ohio. It is also one of the oldest in the state of Ohio and, since its restoration in 1998 has become of the most popular venues in the city.

It now provides an air of warmth and intimacy for its audience. The architecture and decorations are absolutely gorgeous, with ornate decorations everywhere.

There is everything from jazz concerts to drama, and certainly worth an evening out. If you choose to sit in the mezzanine level you will be treated to the extra special view, which encompasses the entire theatre.

20. Glass Axis

Glass Axis is an absorbing glass art studio that now has over 100 members who are dedicated to teaching and education. Helping many youths with an interest in glass art creation, the studio is the perfect outlet for your teenagers to fashion a lovely ornament, and learning all about the art of glass blowing.

Purchase a beginners class and watch your kids learning from one of the patient and competent instructors. Rest assured, they will keep everyone safe while working with the molten glass and blast furnaces.

21. Hayden Falls Park

This is a lovely spot to enjoy the striking 35ft waterfall as well as the surrounding endangered and protected plants. It’s a lot easier to get to these days too with steps, a boardwalk and an overlook. There are also some picnic tables available on the upper level.

Just 100 yards from the Scioto River, you and your family really won’t want to miss this great photo opportunity! The park only takes about 15 minutes to see everything but it’s certainly worth the time! Please be aware there are quite a few steps to climb.

22. The Book Loft

If you’re visiting German Village or simply looking for something to read, a stop here is really a must! You’ll have the choice of 32 rooms of books at bargain prices as well as posters, greeting cards, music CDs, DVDs and puzzles.

Originally a house before being converted to a bookstore, it has now turned into a reader’s paradise! And if that wasn’t enough, the store also have some interesting book themed T shirts, which make perfect souvenirs.

The surrounding grounds are very nice too, with plenty of benches in the courtyard from which to look through all your purchases!

Cicada map 2024: Broods XIII and XIX emerge in Ohio vacationer hotspots

It's not necessarily a once-in-a-lifetime experience, but it doesn't happen often. It's typically more than a decade between times when periodical cicadas emerge in full force in many portions of the country.

They're out now in nearly 20 U.S. states across the Southeast and Midwest.

These 17 states, which range from Oklahoma to Wisconsin to North Carolina and more, are seeing the trillions of cicadas emerging this year in a rare, double brood event.

The two broods this year, the 13-year Brood XIX located mainly in the Southeast and the 17-year Brood XIII in the Midwest, have not emerged together in 221 years and are not expected to do so again until 2245.

Thanks to warm soil temperatures and ideal conditions, cicadas from both broods have already made their way above ground and the emergence is already in full swing.

The two cicada broods were projected to emerge in a combined 17 states across the South and Midwest. They emerge once the soil eight inches underground reaches 64 degrees, beginning in many states in April and May and lasting through late June.

The two broods  last emerged together in 1803 , when Thomas Jefferson was president.

Traveling from Ohio or Northern Kentucky this summer? You may see cicadas

Are you an Ohio or Kentucky resident traveling to places like middle Tennessee or western North Carolina? Well then, be on the lookout for cicadas.

Gatlinburg, Tennessee, and Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, both less than 300 miles from Cincinnati and under 400 miles from Columbus, are Ohio vacationer hotspots where cicadas are above ground this spring.

If you're eyeing a Lake Michigan getaway, you're likely to share the beach with some 17-year cicadas.

New Buffalo in Southwest Michigan, which is less than 300 miles from Columbus and Cincinnati and slightly more than 300 miles from Akron, has cicadas.

Likewise for Indiana Dunes in Northern Indiana — also less than 300 miles from Columbus and Cincinnati and a little over 300 miles from Akron. Northern Illinois, including the Chicago area, are also expected to experience 17-year cicadas this year.

Adult periodical cicadas from Brood XIX are out in full force in states across the Midwest and Southeast, according to  Cicada Safari , a cicada tracking app developed by Mount St. Joseph University in Cincinnati, Ohio.

App users have spotted them in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, southern Illinois, Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.

Brood XIII has emerged in Wisconsin, Iowa, and Indiana. The Chicago area and around central and northern Illinois and downstate areas around the cities of Peoria and Champaign are experiencing cicada mania, according to the tracking service.

Does Ohio have cicadas?

Ohio is  not  in the path of the two broods appearing across much of the Southeast and Midwest, according to the University of Connecticut. However, you might still spot either brood this spring as "some stragglers may pop up in the southwest of the state," according to Ohio State University's  Buckeye Environmental Horticulture Team .

Parts of southern and southwest Ohio will see the emergence of Brood XIV cicadas in 2025, per OSU's Buckeye Environmental Horticulture Team.

Confusingly, Brood XIII emerges every 17 years while Brook XIX resurfaces every 13 years, according to the  University of Illinois .

Will cicadas emerging this year fly to Ohio?

Ohio is not expected to see an onslaught of periodical cicadas from either Brood XIX or XIII, but some neighboring states will.

So will the cicadas be able to fly to Ohio? That's unlikely for two reasons.

First, cicadas are clumsy flyers, and their wings are not suitable for long distance travel, according to  Science News Explores .

Plus, periodical cicadas emerge only to molt, breed, lay eggs and die, all within a few weeks. They don't spend time looking for new territory. Cicadas typically fly less than half a mile from the spot where they emerge, according to the University of Illinois. So, 17-year cicadas from Abraham Lincoln's day have spread roughly five miles total.

What is a brood?

According to the  University of Connecticut , broods are classified as "all periodical cicadas of the same life cycle type that emerge in a given year."

A brood of cicadas is made up of different species of the insect that have separate evolutionary histories. These species may have joined the brood at different times or from different sources. These distinct species are lumped together under the brood because they are in the same region and emerge on a common schedule.

How long will the cicadas be above ground?

How long cicadas live depends on their brood and if they are an annual or periodical species.

The two periodical broods this summer are Brood XIX, which has a 13-year life cycle, and Brood XIII, which has a 17-year life cycle.

Once male and female periodical cicadas have mated and the latter has laid its eggs, the insects will die after spending only a few weeks above ground − anywhere from three to six weeks after first emerging.

That means many of this year's periodical cicadas are set to die in June, though some could die off in late May or July, depending on when they emerged.

The nymphs of annual cicadas remain underground for  two to five years , according to the Missouri Department of Conservation. These cicadas are called " annual " because some members of the species emerge as adults each year.

Why do cicadas make so much noise?

You'll have to thank the male cicadas for all that screeching. Male cicadas synchronize their calls and produce congregational songs, according to  Britannica , which establish territory and attract females. There is also a courting call before mating.

The periodical 13-year and 17-year brood cicadas are the loudest, partially because of the sheer number of them that emerge at once.
