colorado river fishing trip

Mountain Angler is permitted to float over 50 miles of the Upper Colorado River from Pumphouse to Dotsero. This section of Gold Metal water is where we do the majority of our river float trips. A typical float trip will cover 4-8 miles of pristine river, allowing plenty of time to fish prime runs along the way. Mountain Angler has exclusive put-in and take-out rights at the  Yellow Dog Ranch , located 5 miles downstream of State Bridge and 5 miles upstream of Catamount Recreation Area. This allows our clients to avoid the crowds seen in some of the other stretches and on many days. This section of water is  amongst the finest float fishing in Colorado!

This trip is best suited for intermediate to advanced anglers. While we generally recommend our  wade trips  for first time anglers (for the best learning experience and chance to catch fish), we are happy to take first timers on river float trips as well.

Float Fly Fishing June 1-Oct. 31

colorado river fishing trip

Join Fly Fishing Outfitters for a guided fly fishing trip in Vail or Beaver Creek, CO. Enjoy your float fishing with the only Orvis Endorsed guides in the Vail Valley Our guide staff has over 300 years combined experience on local rivers. No other local outfitter comes close.

Float Fly Fishing June 1- October 31

Since 1992, we have been serving the Vail, Colorado area. We are a locally owned and operated, year-round, Orvis endorsed guide service and retail location in Avon (next to Agave). We are a two-time winner of the Orvis Endorsed Outfitter of the Year. Easily said, when it comes to Colorado river fishing, we’re the guides you want.

Float fishing and raft fishing are among the best ways to enjoy fly fishing while at the same time enjoying some of Colorado’s most magnificent scenery. We float the Eagle, Colorado, and Roaring Fork rivers most of the year. Experiencing fly fishing from a drift boat can provide exciting opportunities to reach remote parts of the river not accessible on foot. Rafting and floating give you the ability to float to a remote area where you can get out and wade fish.

We use the very best boats in the industry. Depending on which river we are floating that day we have the ability to use both Fiberglass Drift boats or rafts that are set up for fishing. Our boats accommodate two anglers and a guide. Because of the different microclimates we have in Colorado we are able to float fish most of the year, obviously weather dependent. A streamside lunch is provided on all full-day trips and can be added to half-day trips at an extra charge

All of our guides are whitewater and first aid/CPR certified. They are committed to giving their clients a safe, scenic float regardless of the river. Colorado State Law requires that any person participating in a guided trip must wear a class 3 life jacket, no exceptions.

Half Day Trips are 4 hours on the water.

3/4 Day Trips are 6 Hours on the Water.

Full Day Trips are 8+ hours on the water.

Wade & Walk Fly Fishing Reservations :

Advance reservations are encouraged; however, we will try to accommodate people last minute.  All reservations made within 60 days are charged the trip cost at the time of booking. All trip reservations made outside of 60 days require a 50% deposit.

Any cancellations made within 72 hours of departure time will be charged 50%. Same day cancellations will result in a 100% charge call our toll-free at 1-800-595-8090 for reservations or you can BOOK ONLINE HERE.

Float Fly Fishing Prices June 1-Sept 30

What’s Not Included in Float Fly Fishing?

A gratuity for your guide is greatly appreciated. Just like a restaurant, a 15-25% gratuity is customary. Absolutely everything else is provided!

What should you bring? Rainwear, polarized sunglasses, hat, sunscreen, camera, and extra water. All items are available in our store. When fishing with children please bring an extra pair of clothing and socks. In the winter, it is best to layer like going skiing and bring an extra change of warm socks.

Float Fly Fishing on the Colorado River

A true Rocky Mountain large river fly fishing experience. A tremendous year-round fishery that offers over 125 miles of quality trout habitat. This float offers anglers chances for sizable trout; throw dries and streamers from the boat or get out to nymph a secret riffle. Watch wild eagles soar, explore hot springs, and enjoy the unique geology of the canyons along the river.

The Colorado river float trip is excellent for beginners as well as seasoned anglers. The Colorado River is the most remote river we float, and we have access to private put-ins and take-outs. Primarily a brown trout river, the Colorado River is a favorite of many of our regular clients. The “C” is home to one of only a few Salmon Fly hatches in Colorado! As well as being a fantastic Hopper river in mid-summer, in fall we target the big pre-spawn Brown Trout with Streamers. The average Trout is in the 12-16 inch range, but there are much fish in the 20+ inch range.

Float Fly-Fishing on the Eagle River

Right out the back door of our fly shop the Eagle is one of the last truly freestone rivers left in Colorado, meaning there are no dams that control the flows. That means we can only float it as long as Mother Nature will allow. One of the most popular float and/or wade trips, the Eagle River, gives fly fishermen a chance to cover miles of private ranchland full of wild Rainbows and Browns.

Float fishing on the Eagle is a very action-packed trip, as we are floating a river with several rapids as well as long slow runs. It’s a combination of whitewater and fishing trip. Casting to rising fish that are hanging tight to the bank or behind a boulder will challenge even the best angler.

The Eagle River offers some of the best fishing for truly wild trout in Colorado. Its proximity to the Vail area means you can be fishing minutes after leaving our shop. Mid-summer, half-day evening floats offer incredible dry fly action. Many of our guides wish they could float this river year-round, and know it like the back of their hands. Starting after the runoff (mid-late June) the dry fly fishing can be absolutely incredible. This trip is not to be missed by anyone who loves dry fly fishing. Other prominent hatches include Golden Stoneflies, Pale Morning Duns, Red Quills, Blue Winged Olives, Midges, and the mid to late summer terrestrials. While the upper Eagle has fish in the 12-16 inch range, the further downriver you go it’s not uncommon to hook into a 20+ inch fish. Good luck landing it!

Float Fly-Fishing on the Roaring Fork River

Starting high above the Aspen valley and ending at the Colorado River, this river drops several thousand feet in its 100-plus mile journey. The Roaring Fork is perhaps the best Known freestone trout river in Colorado. Being a Freestone river means that there are very little to no dam-controlled releases. This river has over 2,500 trout per mile with an average fish of 15 inches. Possibilities of hooking a trout over 20 inches in a day’s float are probable. There is a pretty even mix of Rainbows and Browns through this stretch. The 13 miles of river between Carbondale and Glenwood Springs that we float are all under Gold Medal regulations. This river can be floated year-round.

Perhaps most famously known for the Green Drake hatch in July that can provide great dry fly fishing with large Mayfly patterns. There are also very good hatches of Caddis pre and post-runoff, Golden stoneflies, Pale Morning duns, and also great Hopper action. Floating is the easiest way to fish this large quickly moving river that also flows through quite a bit of private property. The “thunder river” does run through more slightly urbanized areas; it is still an incredible Trout fishery. The Roaring Fork River also offers excellent Winter/Spring wade fishing in a lower elevation that has a temperate climate.

We use FlyBook for our reservations system. You can book your trip right now and receive confirmation via email. You will need to create a simple profile to complete your reservation. Once completed you will be able to easily communicate directly with the shop regarding your specific reservation. It’s really easy to make changes, guide requests, or address dietary concerns. This web-based system makes booking your trip paperless and seamless.

All reservations made within 30 days are charged the trip cost at the time of booking. All trip reservations made outside of 30 days require a 50% deposit. Any cancellations made within 72 hours of departure time will be charged 50%. Same-day cancellations will result in a 100% charge. About Fly Fishing the Colorado River

The Upper Colorado River corridor has a deep-rooted history, once inhabited by indigenous peoples who found sustenance and spiritual significance along its banks. Early Native American tribes regarded the river as a vital life source and a pathway for seasonal migrations.

During the westward expansion in the 19th century, the upper Colorado River became a lifeline for pioneers and explorers. The river's flowing waters guided the path of those seeking new opportunities and untamed landscapes. The remnants of old stagecoach routes and settlements along its shores speak to the challenges and triumphs of those who ventured into the unknown. In the late 1800s, the lure of gold and silver led prospectors to the Colorado mountains, and the upper Colorado River played a crucial role in facilitating transportation for mining activities. The riverbanks saw the comings and goings of prospectors, traders, and settlers, leaving behind a legacy etched into the fabric of the landscape.

Today, as you float and fly fish the upper Colorado River, you're surrounded by a living history, where each bend in the river holds echoes of a time when this waterway was a lifeline for survival and a conduit for exploration. A guided fly fishing float trip on the upper Colorado River not only promises exceptional angling for rainbow and brown trout, but also invites you to become part of a narrative shaped by the intersection of nature, culture, and the passage of time.

Two men holds a Cutthroat Trout caught in Rocky Mountain National Park

11 best fishing spots in the Rocky Mountain region

Yellowstone National Park, which spans across Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho, is an example of one of the many fishing destinations in the Rocky Mountain region.

From pristine Midwest lakes to the rugged rivers of the Rocky Mountains and the saltwater havens along the coasts, we highlight what makes each region a fishing enthusiast's paradise. With insights into local species and the distinctive landscapes that set each region apart, this guide is an angler's roadmap to planning the perfect fishing trip, whether you're a seasoned pro or a novice eager to cast your first line.

Brad Pitt may have popularized fly fishing in his film "A River Runs Through It," set in Missoula, Montana; however, the lifestyle and thrill of fishing continue to run deep, with numerous waters waiting to be explored within the country's western territories. As a stunning region boasting some of the nation's most majestic lakes and rivers, complemented by the serenity of open deserts, forests, and prairies, you can't go wrong when planning a fishing trip in the Rockies. Here are some of the best fishing spots you'll find lingering within the Rocky Mountains.

  • Yellowstone River, Montana: The Yellowstone River offers 692 free-flowing miles of fishing with several fish species. Full of a variety of trout, including cutthroat trout, rainbow trout, large whitefish, and brown trout, along with catfish, walleye, and sturgeon, Yellowstone River is free of dams and is one of the best for fly fishing.
  • Colorado River, Colorado: The 1,450-mile-long Colorado River spans multiple states of the Rockies, including Arizona, Nevada, and Utah. Fly fishermen can look forward to plentiful trout in the upper part of the river in June.
  • Coeur d'Alene Lake, Idaho: Largemouth and smallmouth bass, northern pike, kokanee salmon, Chinook salmon, and rainbow trout can be found swimming in the beautiful waters of Coeur d'Alene Lake in Northern Idaho. Spanning 25 miles, enjoy over 109 miles of shoreline and access to a variety of sport and native fish.
  • Blue Mesa Reservoir, Colorado: Located in the Curecanti National Recreation Area, Blue Mesa Reservoir is home to many species of fish, including rainbow trout, brown trout, kokanee salmon, lake trout, and yellow perch. Try your luck at ice fishing, fly fishing, and trophy trout fishing in this 20-mile-long reservoir.
  • Fort Peck Reservoir, Montana: This Montana reservoir is home to plentiful smallmouth bass, averaging 16 inches long and up to six pounds, as well as other fish species introduced to the lake. Fishing experts recommend larger boats to overcome the lake's windy, open waters.
  • Green River, Utah: Sitting below Flaming Gorge Reservoir, anglers can look forward to brown trout, rainbow trout, and whitefish in Utah's 275-mile-long Green River, with stunning views of the region's steep canyons.
  • Bighorn River, Montana: Another prime fly-fishing spot in Montana, Bighorn River's public water access areas include plenty of brown and rainbow trout. With clear waters and cool temperatures, Bighorn's fish are meant to be caught and released.
  • North Platte River, Wyoming: Fly fishing for rainbow and brown trout is a favorite of fishermen on the 150-mile North Platte River. A Blue Ribbon fishery, beginners and experts alike will enjoy fishing along this scenic river and its verdant surroundings.
  • Salmon River, Idaho: Many species of salmon, white sturgeon, and tons of trout can be found in this breathtaking Idaho river. Prepare to boat and hike your way to remote areas of the 425-mile river for an afternoon of angling and fly fishing.
  • Snake River, Wyoming: The Jackson Hole valley is home to many fishable rivers and streams, including Snake River, where you'll find indigenous spotted cutthroats and other species of trout, a rare river that still houses its native fish.
  • Lake Tahoe, Nevada: The alluring, alpine blue waters of Lake Tahoe in northern Nevada are the state's angler fishermen's dream for kokanee salmon, brown trout, rainbow trout, and lake trout. Fishermen are limited to five catches per day to maintain the lake's health.

Remember, before embarking on a fishing trip to any of these destinations, thoroughly research local regulations, obtain the necessary permits and licenses, and practice responsible fishing practices to ensure the sustainability of the fisheries for future generations. With proper preparation and adherence to regulations, anglers can enjoy a rewarding fishing experience throughout the Rocky Mountains and beyond.

From Gulf streams to meticulously planned dams, explore the fertile waters of Arizona, Texas, New Mexico, and Oklahoma for a summer of angling, trophy catches, and new fish species to discover. Plan your summer fishing trips with these 11 fishing destinations in the Southwest region!

  • Lake Austin, Texas: Situated on the Colorado River, Lake Austin is an excellent fishing spot with favorable fishing atmospheres year-round. Largemouth bass, catfish, and sunfish dominate these waters with potential trophy catches. Try fishing after sunset at Lake Austin when boat traffic is minimal.
  • San Juan River, New Mexico: The year-round fishing on the San Juan River makes it one of New Mexico's premier fishing destinations, especially for fly fishing. This river is renowned for its abundant trout population. Local experts recommend fishing in the river's "Texas Hole" for a diverse range of fish.
  • Roosevelt Lake, Arizona: As one of Arizona's largest bodies of water, Roosevelt Lake in the Tonto National Forest is a top fishing spot in the dry state. Anglers can find bass, catfish, crappie, kokanee, walleye, and trout here. Popular fishing spots include Tonto Creek Inlet and Cougar Point.
  • Lake Texoma, Oklahoma: Boasting over 600 miles of shoreline and one of the largest reservoirs in the United States, Lake Texoma is known as the "Striper Capital of the World." Anglers flock here not only for its plentiful stripers, but also for its variety of bass, catfish, and alligator gar.
  • Lake Fork Reservoir, Texas: A favorite among anglers during the hot Texas summers, Lake Fork Reservoir is teeming with largemouth bass, crappie, catfish, white bass, and sunfish. Know that Lake Fork has catch regulations requiring bass between 16 and 24 inches to be released back into the water.
  • Alamo Lake, Arizona: Alamo Lake is one of Arizona's premier largemouth bass and crappie fishing spots. The lake also has a variety of tilapia, bluegill, and catfish breeds. Alamo Lake's shallow waters, consistent levels, and frequent fishing competitions make it popular for every type of fisherman.
  • Oologah Lake, Oklahoma: This large reservoir in northeastern Oklahoma offers a diverse range of fish species, including largemouth bass, white crappie, white bass, paddlefish, walleye, channel, and blue catfish.
  • Bartlett Lake, Arizona: Bartlett Lake is home to black crappie, channel and flathead catfish, bluegill, and smallmouth and largemouth bass. One of Arizona's best desert fishing reservoirs, you'll find several fishing tournaments hosted throughout the year.
  • Sam Rayburn Reservoir, Texas: Fed by the Angelina River and renowned for its largemouth bass, Sam Rayburn Reservoir also houses catfish, crappie, sunfish, and gar. Anglers from across the country cherish this Texas reservoir for its diverse fish population during the summer months.

Body recovered from Colorado River over 2 weeks after man, dog vanish with homemade raft in Grand Canyon

Updated on: May 14, 2024 / 10:58 AM EDT / CBS/AP

The body of a New Mexico man  has been recovered from the Colorado River in Grand Canyon National Park more than two weeks after he disappeared with his dog, authorities said Monday.

National Park Service personnel were notified Friday about a body being spotted in the river. Authorities said the body appears to that of 58-year-old Thomas L. Robison of Santa Fe.

Park officials said Robison was believed to have attempted to travel down the river with his dog on a wooden raft. Officials previously released a photo of the raft that it is believed Robison used, showing just a few long planks assembled together, along with a paddle and life vest.

screen-shot-2024-04-25-at-8-18-52-am.png

Robison had abandoned his vehicle at  Lees Ferry , a fishing and boat launching point in the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. The site is often used as a launch for whitewater rafting trips along the Colorado River and through the Grand Canyon, according to park officials.

The Coconino County Medical Examiner will confirm positive identification of the body.

The National Park Service and medical examiner's office are investigating.

The Colorado River runs nearly 1,500 miles, from the Rocky Mountains to Mexico,  according to American Rivers , a site that catalogues information about the nation's waterways. In the Grand Canyon, the river continues to deepen and widen in the national landmark,  according to the NPS . Whitewater rafting is common in the river.

Alaska's rusting waters: Pristine rivers and streams turning orange

by Emily C. Dooley, UC Davis

Alaska's Rusting Waters: Pristine Rivers and Streams Turning Orange

Dozens of Alaska's most remote streams and rivers are turning from a crystal clear blue into a cloudy orange, and the staining could be the result of minerals exposed by thawing permafrost, finds new research in Communications Earth & Environment .

For the first time, researchers from the National Park Service, U.S. Geological Survey, the University of California, Davis, and other institutions have documented and sampled some of the impaired waters, pinpointing 75 locations across a Texas-sized area of northern Alaska's Brooks Range.

These degraded rivers and streams could have significant implications for drinking water and fisheries in Arctic watersheds as the climate changes, the researchers said.

"The more we flew around, we started noticing more and more orange rivers and streams," said lead author Jon O'Donnell, an ecologist for the NPS' Arctic Inventory and Monitoring Network. "There are certain sites that look almost like a milky orange juice. Those orange streams can be problematic both in terms of being toxic but might also prevent migration of fish to spawning areas."

Visible from space

O'Donnell first noticed an issue when he visited a river in 2018 that appeared rusty despite having been clear the year prior. He began asking around and compiling locations while grabbing water samples when possible in the remote region, where helicopters are generally the only way to access the rivers and streams.

"The stained rivers are so big we can see them from space," said Brett Poulin, an assistant professor of environmental toxicology at UC Davis who was a principal investigator in the research. "These have to be stained a lot to pick them up from space."

Poulin, whose expertise is in water chemistry , thought the staining looked similar to what happens with acid mine drainage, except no mines are near any of the impaired rivers, including along the famed Salmon River and other federally protected waters.

One hypothesis is that the permafrost, which is essentially frozen ground, stores minerals and as the climate warmed, the metal ores that were once locked up were exposed to water and oxygen, resulting in the release of acid and metals.

"Chemistry tells us minerals are weathering," Poulin said. "Understanding what's in the water is a fingerprint as to what occurred."

The impacted rivers are on federal lands managed by Bureau of Land Management, Fish and Wildlife Service and NPS, including Gates of the Arctic and Kobuk Valley national parks.

Poulin and Ph.D. candidate Taylor Evinger analyzed initial samples, then collected their own on a trip last August, while others took samples in June and July. This year, they will take three trips during the summer to collect additional samples.

Acidic water releasing metals

Some samples from the impaired waters have a pH of 2.3 compared to the average pH of 8 for these rivers. This means the sulfide minerals are weathering, resulting in highly acidic and corrosive conditions that release additional metals. Elevated or high levels of iron, zinc, nickel, copper and cadmium have been measured.

"We see a lot of different types of metals in these waters," Evinger said. "One of the most dominant metals is iron. That's what is causing the color change."

While O'Donnell first noticed a change in 2018, satellite images have turned up stained waters dating back to 2008.

"The issue is slowly propagating from small headwaters into bigger rivers over time," he said. "When emergent issues or threats come about, we need to be able to understand them."

Alaska's rusting waters: Pristine rivers and streams turning orange

Understanding risk

The researchers are in the second year of a three-year grant aimed at understanding what is happening in the water, modeling what other areas may be at risk and assessing implications for drinking water and fishing stocks.

The problem is growing and affecting habitat, water quality and other ecological systems, turning healthy areas into degraded habitats with fewer fish and invertebrates. If rural communities rely on these rivers for drinking water, they could require treatment eventually, and the fishing stocks that feed local residents could be affected.

"There's a lot of implications," O'Donnell said. "As the climate continues to warm, we would expect permafrost to continue to thaw and so wherever there are these types of minerals, there's potential for streams to be turning orange and becoming degraded in terms of water quality."

More work is needed to better understand the problem and whether rivers and streams can rebound, perhaps after cold weather promotes permafrost recovery.

"I think there will be a lot more detailed work to follow up to address some of the uncertainties that we currently have," O'Donnell said.

Scientists from Alaska Pacific University, Colorado State University, University of Alaska Anchorage and UC Riverside also contributed to the research.
