Coldplay at Etihad Stadium Manchester 2023 – stage times, support act, tickets and setlist

It's a massive gig for the city - here's what you need to know if you're heading down.

Daisy Jackson

Coldplay will finally touch down in Manchester this month for their long-awaited Music of the Spheres World Tour.

The group, fronted by Chris Martin, will be performing a whopping four nights at the 60,000-capacity Etihad Stadium, home ground of Manchester City.

It’s the first time they’ve brought this tour to the city, choosing London and Glasgow on last year’s run of shows.

Coldplay are one of the most successful and popular bands of the last three decades, with nine albums and endless sold-out concerts in their back catalogue.

They’re also famed for putting on a staggering live show.

This 2023 tour promises to be as environmentally beneficial as possible . They’ve even added a kinetic dance floor that harvests energy from the audience’s dancing, and installed electricity-generating pedal bikes so that the crowd can recharge the band’s battery by having a little cycle.

If you’re heading to see Coldplay at the Etihad Stadium in Manchester, here’s everything you need to know.

When are Coldplay performing in Manchester?

Coldplay at Wembley

Coldplay will be taking over the Etihad Stadium for FOUR nights – quite a feat.

They’ll be performing on Wednesday 31 May, Thursday 1 June, Saturday 3 June and Sunday 4 June.

Are there still Coldplay tickets available?

Demand for tickets when they went on sale was phenomenally high – fans reported being in 400,000-strong virtual queues .

So as you might expect, tickets are extremely hard to come by at this point.

At the time of writing, there was one single, lonely seat left in the entire venue for the band’s opening show – and absolutely nothing for subsequent dates.

Keep checking See Tickets here for any last-minute releases.

And if you try to buy tickets second-hand, make sure you’re using a reputable resale site so you don’t get caught out by scammers.

Who is supporting Coldplay in Manchester?

Chvrches will support Coldplay in Manchester

Coldplay have called upon the phenomenally talented Glasgow group Chvrches to be their main support act in Manchester.

The trio, fronted by Lauren Mayberry, are famed for hit singles including Get Out, The Mother We Share, and Gun.

Naturally, for a gig of this scale, one support act won’t do – Coldplay will also be supported by Manchester electronic-indie band Porij.

Each of their songs feels like a love letter to the Hacienda rave scene and bands which came before like New Order.

What are the stage times?

According to the Man City site, these are the stage times for Colplay and their support acts.

  • Campus opening time – 2pm
  • Doors open – 5pm
  • Porij – 6pm-6.30pm
  • Chvrches – 7pm-7.45pm
  • Coldplay – 8.15pm-10.15pm

What’s the expected setlist?

coldplay tour setlist manchester 2023

Setlists will always be subject to change as artists hone their live show, but this is what Coldplay played on their most recent gig in Barcelona.

Higher Power Adventure of a Lifetime Paradise The Scientist Viva la Vida Something Just Like This (The Chainsmokers & Coldplay cover) Magic What’s Love Got to Do With It (Graham Lyle cover) (with Lauren Mayberry) Charlie Brown Yellow Human Heart People of the Pride Clocks Infinity Sign Hymn for the Weekend Aeterna My Universe (Coldplay x BTS cover) A Sky Full of Stars Sunrise Bamboléo (Gipsy Kings cover) (with Gipsy Kings) Nel blu, dipinto di blu (Domenico Modugno cover) (with Gipsy Kings) Humankind Fix You Biutyful

How to get to the Etihad Stadium

coldplay tour setlist manchester 2023

Public-transport wise, the Metrolink is the most direct way to get to the Etihad Stadium (and its dedicated tram stop Etihad Campus), which is just a few stops away from Manchester Piccadilly.

Both Holt Town and Velopark Metrolink stops, located on either side of the Etihad Campus stop, will not be open for at least an hour after an event at the stadium.

The trams will be very busy though, and the weather looks good, so you might prefer to walk – it’s around a 30 minute stroll from town with this safe walking route recommended.

If you need to drive, official car parking is priced at £25 for cars, £50 for coaches, and £40 for mini buses.

There are unofficial car parks near the stadium too but make sure you’re not getting ripped off.

Weather forecast in Manchester for Coldplay

Oh guys, you’re in luck – for once in its life Manchester has a stunning weather forecast for the entire run of Coldplay shows.

It’s set to be sunny with highs of 19 degrees on Wednesday and Thursday, then there’s more sunshine with a high of 20 degrees on Saturday and Sunday. Glorious.

Ok, full disclosure: as a fellow Stopfordian, this review was always going to be heavily biased, but I still wholeheartedly believe that Blossoms are some the best performers on the British music scene right now and, as far I’m concerned, their Wythenshawe Park gig was yet more proof of that.

The landmark show was their biggest to date with roughly 30,000 people packed into a Greater Manchester field for what was just the second year of the Wythenshawe Park gigs which looks destined to be a must-visit annual Manchester music event.

For starters, not only is being the second name chosen to headline this still relatively new event after Noel bloody Gallagher quite the achievement, but playing to what felt like an entire town full of people on your home turf is the kind of stuff usually reserved for, you know, GOATs…

Now, we’re not going to be so bold as to claim they’re at that point in their careers already, however, when you’re collecting the kind of support acts they are, playing to crowds this big and making music lovers of all ages sing about a giant fibreglass gorilla called Gary, you’re clearly doing something right.

🚨 Be advised: GMP are on the lookout for an eight-foot fibreglass Gorilla – first name Gary, second name trouble. 🦍 He was last spotted on stage as @BlossomsBand were playing absolute bangers at Wythenshawe Park. Be on the lookout… 🕵️‍♂️ #LiveFromWythenshawePark pic.twitter.com/DEhYgebc4S — The Manc (@TheMancUK) August 26, 2024

Let’s kick off with the supports, shall we? That’s one of the best things about this Live From Wythenshawe Park series: these dates are closer to mini-Manc festivals than they are standalone gigs, and with such an impressive roster of so-called ‘warm-up’ acts, we were truly spoiled rotten.

From more fledgling artists like The Guestlist and Ttrruuces, fast-rising up-and-comers like Seb Lowe and The K’s, to UK veterans like Shed Seven and the always sensational indie stars Inhaler, it was a stacked lineup spanning several generations.

Before Inhaler got the crowd bouncing and ready from Blossoms , we even got special appearances from two incredible female voices during Shed Seven’s set as Issy Ferris and fellow Manc music royalty Rowetta took the stage for some supreme harmonies and what felt like a bit of a Sunday service moment.

But then it was time for the big guns and it really does feel like they’re among that calibre now. They’ve smashed Leeds, Glastonbury, Kendal – they even turned the Plaza and Edgeley Park back in Stockport into fully-fledged music venues – and they look more at home than ever on the big stages.

coldplay tour setlist manchester 2023

It feels mad to think that these lot have been going for 11 years when you first think about it, but when you actually sit back and look at the regular stream of top-quality indie bangers they’ve been putting out every couple of years, it starts to click into place.

Perhaps it’s because they’re still young men and have decades of releasing new music to come but they’re no longer the new kids and they haven’t been for ages – in fact, they’ve released some of the most popular contemporary releases in the genre consistently for a long time now.

Even in the final promo for their now landmark Wythenshawe Park concert, they did a spoof version of ‘Gary’ where one of the lines simply said ‘Honey Sweet’s a tune’ and, you know what, they’re right but the list goes much further than that.

‘Getaway’, ‘There’s A Reason Why’, ‘I Can’t Stand It’, ‘Your Girlfriend’, ‘What Can I Say After I’m Sorry?’ and on and on it goes. We heard them all in their very best iterations, with the band’s on-stage production now at a new level and Tom Ogden’s frontman chops up their with the best right now.

One thing we really enjoyed as a group of old mates from SK was that the set wasn’t the hits either; we got to roll back the years and enjoy the tracks from that debut album when we first started getting excited about a new band coming out of our hometown.

The big extended versions of ‘Blow’ and ‘Cut Me and I’ll Bleed’, in particular, felt rather special.

coldplay tour setlist manchester 2023

But then you look at where the style has gone since then and you genuinely have to just step back and applaud their evolution since that breakout record.

It’s very hard for any band to find that balance of developing their sound and actually changing whilst still managing to nail that instantly recognisable feeling that lets you know it’s one of their songs but they always seem to manage.

Whether it’s those surviving 80s influences that have stood them in good stead since the start, those poppy keyboard riffs from Myles that help keep every tune as catchy as the last, they can collaborate with the likes of Jungle and CMAT whilst still sounding unmistakably like themselves. It’s quite the skill.

That’s why they very quickly went from the one current band from Stockport that people could name to one of the most recognisable modern names in British music with hordes of fans all over, not just Greater Manchester . Just look at the energy coming off that crowd, not to mention the sheer size of it:

View this post on Instagram A post shared by BLOSSOMS (@blossomsband)
  • Faithless set for first return to Manchester since Maxi Jazz’s passing as part of huge new tour
  • A Take That documentary series is currently in the works at Netflix
  • The Sex Pistols are coming back to Manchester to play Never Mind the Bollocks in full

Now, all that is simply to say that, at this point, if you’re still someone who only knows ‘that first one’ and is under the presumption that Blossoms are another indie band who fell into that trap of all their songs sounding pretty similar, you’re wrong and the sea of fans at Wythenshawe Park will tell you the same.

Whether you’ve been there from day one and have watched these lads, well, blossom into fully graduated performers and festival-toppers like this currently very sappy Stopfordian, or you got hooked after dozenth irresistible indie anthem, we’re sure you’re all in agreement: they’re proper headliners.

‘Charlemagne’ will forever be a favourite but make no mistake, they’ve come on leaps and bounds in every department since it helped launch their career, and even if it is still their biggest song when they’re headlining the likes of Glasto one day (you heard us), it’ll still sound incredible.

In fact, who cares: here it is from another angle – we’re off to do a bit of research about some reunion people are talking about…

Great pubs all share a few key ingredients that make them a town or city’s favourite drinking den. A good selection of pints, an atmosphere that represents its community and maybe even a 300-year historical timeline of surviving world wars, terror attacks and a complete rebuild from the foundations up… Oh wait, that might just be the one pub.

Now, if you’re a fan of boozers with old-school traditional values and a complex history, Sinclair’s Oyster Bar is the time capsule of a watering hole for you. Tracing its roots back to 1720, this Grade II listed building was a Tudor institution, and it’s fair to say it has stood the test of time.

The half-timber structure has had its fair share of career changes over Manchester’s evolving generations. Nowadays we pop in for a pint, your great-grandfather might have got his cuffs altered and his great-grandfather would have picked up his pork chops for tea – straight off the pig.

Alongside The Old Wellington Inn next door, this area was known as ‘Shambles Square’, originally used as a middle-aged butcher shop where live animals were slaughtered and sold on the spot, pretty grim.

It later became a drapers shop selling fabrics for local tailors, but you’d do well to find a fitted suit in here these days and the closest you’d come is the Arndale over the road – which funnily enough is where the pair of pubs both used to stand.

As an industrial hub, this part of Manchester was heavily targeted by German bombing in WWII, and in 1941 weathered over 450 tonnes of bombs over two days during the ‘Christmas Blitz’ creating one of the biggest mass blazes the country has seen since The Great Fire of London in 1666. 272 tonnes of bombs were dropped on the first night and 195 the following evening making Manchester the 11th most targeted area in Britain. But it would take more than the Luftwaffe to bring Sinclair’s Oyster Bar to the ground.

Sinclair's Oyster Bar in Manchester has a fascinating 300-year-old history. Credit: The Manc Group

The area around it was eventually rebuilt in the 70s and is covered by modern buildings we see today, but the tale of survival added another storyline just before the turn of the century. In 1996, the buildings survived a 3000-pound IRA bomb that tore through nearby Corporation Street. With it formally being nestled amongst thick concrete buildings and its ‘built to last’ foundations, the historic little plot only succumbed to minimal damage.

This close call resulted in Sinclair’s and the Old Wellington needing a new permanent home. It doesn’t sound like the easiest feat to move a group of 300-year-old buildings a stone’s throw across a bustling city centre but when it’s worth it – it is worth it.

The plan was proposed by civil engineer Martin Stockley and architect Ian Simpson to raise the buildings on 15-foot stilts, move them 300 meters and angle them 180 degrees to form the new square in the shadow of Manchester Cathedral.

To add a little bit of necessary complexity to the manoeuvre, the 18th-century structures had to be dismantled into over 10,000 separate parts before being photographed, labelled and meticulously reassembled over a painstaking 11-month period. It sounds like a really tedious LEGO set but for industry professionals, just imagine the feeling of putting that last piece in.

These days Sinclair's Oyster Bar is a 'Digital Detox' pub where phones aren't allowed.

Sinclair’s and The Old Wellington have slotted in nicely in the modern day with their distinctive architecture cutting through the monotony of the glass and sandstone surroundings.

Now, the architecture is all well and good but setting foot inside these days we’re here for the pints. This Sam Smiths pub serves up a humble selection of beers and stouts at the best prices. You won’t find a Stella Artois, a Madri or some Jungle Juice Pale IPA in here, just traditional British-brewed lager.

It boasts one of the cheapest beers in town at around £3.50 with one of the best beer gardens about – which is frequented by football fans, first-time visitors and locals alike.

The boozers uphold the values of old with its proud ‘digital detox’ slogan encouraging its inhabitants to keep their phones in their pockets and have a chin wag over a Taddy Lager and a pack of dry roasted nuts.

Just how it used to be!

LIVE, the federation representing Britain’s live music industry, published their findings yesterday (September 4), demonstrating a steady increase since Covid hit in 2020. They reported that the £6.1billion figure is 17 per cent up on 2022, and 35 per cent up on 2019.

The federation calculated the figure from more than 55,000 gigs, concerts, festivals and events in 2023 through ticket sales and any spending at the event itself, or at business nearby around the date the event was held.

Concert revenues have primarly contributed to this growth thanks to the blockbuster tours of acts like Beyoncé and Coldplay,  which apparently made up almost three quarters of the £6.1billion impact.

Additionally, London was responsible for nearly a third of the total live music revenue, with Manchester landing in second place with 7.4 per cent and Glasgow in third place (5.5 per cent).

Meanwhile, Edinburgh, Birmingham, Cardiff and Belfast were all named in the top 10 cities contributing to the live industry’s economic impact.

In a comment to  The Guardian , CEO of LIVE Jon Collins said Taylor Swift’s Eras tour and the Oasis reunion tour “serves as a reminder of the economic benefits live events can deliver to local economies across the UK”.

He went on to cite figures from the National Arenas Association demonstrating how for 10,000 people who attend a live music show, £1m is spent on local business around the event, adding: “These local benefits spread widely to provide a significant boost to the UK economy.”

With the cost of living crisis impacting live venues and artists’ abilities to tour, a case was made for a £1 ticket levy last April following a Music Venue Trust report showing a “disaster” facing grassroots music venues . In a Parliament session, figures such as English Teacher ‘s Lily Fontaine argued that “grassroots music venues bring joy and creativity to communities that need it and “without them, it would be grey”.

Fontaine also said that if the UK didn’t tackle the financial burden facing musicians now then “the knock-on effect of that could be incredibly severe”, adding: “If you can’t support artists who are signed to a major label and you can’t support artists at a lower level, then how is anyone without money or from a regional area where they don’t have access to venues going to have an opportunity to create music and tour it?

“That leads to a homogenous music industry which leads to less diverse music scenes. If there are less diverse music scenes, then music as one of our biggest exports, is then diminished.”

Meanwhile, Music Venue Trust CEO Mark Davyd pointed to the closure of Bath Moles  as an example of why grassroots venues need funding: “The impact on those communities and the artists that live in those communities is very dramatic. The closure of a space like Bath Moles  obviously has a huge impact on the pipeline, but it also has a huge impact on Bath as a music city.

“We need to recognise that across the country, we are seeing young people, communities of music fans, finding new music and live music further and further away from them.”

In response, the DCMS shared a report calling for “a levy-funded support fund and a targeted temporary VAT cut to help stem the tide of closures” and “a comprehensive fan-led review of live and electronic music” to “examine the long-term challenges to the wider live music ecosystem”. Fontaine said of the DCMS report: “It’s a relief that the enquiry has resulted in recognition at a governmental level that not only is the music industry ecosystem is in crisis, but that saving it and bettering it is important.”

“Struggling to make ends meet as an artist isn’t a new concept – but that doesn’t mean it’s right. I’m looking forward to seeing how, when implemented, the ticket levy will be delivered to the grassroots venues and scenes. There’s little to be proud of coming from this island sometimes, so it’s a relief we’re at least trying to save potentially our best and coolest cultural export.”

Meanwhile, the Oasis reunion tour has lead to refreshed calls for arena and stadium ticket levy to save grassroots music venues. After Ticketmaster crashed before before the sale commenced at 9am and  battling giant queues, ticket buyers were left frustrated by Ticketmaster’s dyanmic pricing system , which saw some tickets originally priced at £135 skyrocketing to nearly £400.

The fiasco led to Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy calling for a review of “dynamic pricing” and secondary ticket sites, calling the price hikes “incredibly depressing”.

In other news, only 11 of the 34 grassroots music venues that Oasis played on their first tour are still open .
