1. Clear Kayak Tour of Shell Key Preserve and Tampa Bay Area

Clear kayak in florida

⏰ Duration: 2 hours

⭐ Reviews : 5/5. See all reviews here.

✅ BOOK HERE

This one is the ultimate St Pete clear kayaking tour . With over 3,000 reviews and a rating of 5 out of 5, it can hardly get better than that!

The tour starts in Tierra Verde (this is a popular kayaking spot in St Pete because there are beautiful mangroves), in front of Billy’s Stone Crab restaurant.

You can easily park here and should see the clear kayak very quickly. You will then be greeted by your guide.

Once the entire group is here (don’t worry though, it will be a small group. The company has a small fleet of 5 clear kayaks and likes to keep it that way so you get a better experience on the water), the guide will give you the safety brief and explain how to use the paddle.

You will then start the tour and head to Shell Key. This is one of the most beautiful hidden gems in St Pete and you will love it! There are many mangrove islands and the wildlife is incredible.

Depending on the season, you will see different creatures but pelicans and Roseate Spoonbills are common.

Of course, you might also get to see manatees and dolphins!

Please note that none of the kayaking companies in St Pete can guarantee any sighting. Obviously, all these animals are wild and although the guides know their habits and will do their best, there is always an element of luck.

There are several stops during the tour including one on a sandy shoreline if the tide allows it. You will be paddling a fair bit but will also have plenty of time to rest and enjoy the explanations given by the guide.

What are the reviews like?

❤️ “She was the BEST guide! She was informative, fun, and helpful.”

2. Small-Group Clear Kayak Tour in Shell Key

Clear kayak in st pete fl

⭐Reviews : 4.5 / 5. See all reviews here.

This is another St Pete Beach clear kayak tour to consider. It also starts in Tierra Verde (at 2830 Pinellas Bayway S) and will take you to the beautiful Shell Key as well as Fort DeSoto.

These are two popular spots for kayaking in St Pete because they are known for their wildlife and being a bit off the beaten path.

The tour is around 4-mile long and lasts 2 hours. Please note that you do not need to be an expert to join this tour, the guide will explain how to paddle and use the kayak if it’s your first time.

You will go through several mangrove tunnels which is such a unique experience. The wildlife in the mangroves is incredible and the guide will point out a lot of things. It’s a great way to learn about the local ecosystem.

Having clear kayaks is also an advantage because you will get to see more sea creatures. It’s not unusual to see cormorants swimming underneath the kayaks!

There will also be a beach break on Shell Key.

PRO TIP: Make sure to wear a hat because it will be very sunny. A cap is preferred though since big hats could be more annoying in the mangrove tunnels.

❤️“Wonderful experience! The guide was awesome, very knowledgeable about the local ecosystem and pointed out lots of wildlife along the trip.”

3. Shell Key Clear Kayak Glow in the Dark Tour

accommodation st pete beach

⏰ Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes

⭐Reviews : 5 / 5. See all reviews here.

If you are looking for a unique thing to do in St Pete, this night clear kayak tour will be perfect for you!

You will also be leaving from Tierra Verde and exploring Shell Key Preserve except that this time, it will be in the evening and the kayak is equipped with glow in the dark LED lights.

It’s a great way to discover the area in a different way. The lights make the atmosphere quite magical and you should get to see some animals you wouldn’t necessarily during the day.

The eco tour guides are very knowledgeable. They know the area like the back of their hands and will bring you to the best spots to maximise the chances of seeing fish, manatees, sharks and birds.

It would be quite difficult to do this on your own so being with a local guide is such a huge plus.

Also, the LED lights illuminate the water in such a beautiful way. Don’t forget to take your phone (in a waterproof bag though) because you can get some beautiful photos during the tour.

The tour is open to kayakers of all levels. Even if it’s your first time, it’s not a problem, the guide will explain everything.

Depending on the slot you book, you might also get to enjoy the sunset at the beginning of the tour, which makes the experience even more magical.

❤️“Went on a LED light night tour and had an absolute blast. It was so beautiful out there. A night tour is a great way to have super fun and stay out of the hot sun. I would definitely do this again!”

4. Illuminated Clear Kayak LED Glow Nights Paddle

⭐Reviews : /5. See all reviews here.

This is another great night clear kayak tour in St Petersburg FL. You will be leaving from Tierra Verde with your guide and discover some of the beautiful mangrove tunnels at night.

It will be an amazing opportunity to discover St Pete with a whole new light (pun intended).

Some of the wildlife only shows up at night so you get to see things you wouldn’t during the day.

Also, since it can be quite hot during the day, it’s a great way to enjoy a clear kayaking experience in St Pete without suffering from the heat.

Please note that the kayaks are tandem so you will be with the person you booked with, otherwise you may be paired up with someone else from the group unless it’s an odd number.

❤️“The mangrove tunnels and the secrets only found at night made this excursion the best on our vacation.”

5. Sunset & Glow Tour Treasure Island

treasure island st Pete Florida

This awesome sunset clear kayak tour in St Pete FL is perfect for people who want to do something different and enjoy the beautiful Florida sunsets.

Unlike all the other tours that focus on the Shell Key area, this one will take you along the canals of Treasure Island.

Treasure Island is located near St Pete Beach and is one of the best places to stay in St Pete if you like some calm and quiet.

It’s a beautiful area with loads of dolphins and the perfect place to go kayaking.

You will meet your local guide at The BoatDega. There is free parking so you can easily leave your vehicle there. Also, you can find restrooms there so make sure to go before the tour since you won’t get a chance until you go back.

You will then go on the canals with your LED light clear kayak (don’t forget to take pictures because it’s very pretty). You will also learn plenty about the local wildlife and your guide will take you to some spots where you can see fish and birds.

Admittedly, you won’t get to see as much wildlife here as you would on Shell Key but it’s such a peaceful spot that it has just as much charm.

Please note that if you are traveling with a small dog, this is the only dog friendly clear kayak tour in St Pete so that’s the one for you. You can take your dog with you as long as it’s small and well behaved.

❤️“My family loved being out on the water at sunset. Gorgeous! Our guide was patient, kind, and knowledgeable. We learned quite a bit about the local wildlife.”

7 Tips For Clear Kayaking Through Shell Key Preserve Near St. Petersburg, Florida

clear kayak tours st petersburg fl

  • Activities and Interests
  • Destinations
  • Outdoor Activities
  • St. Petersburg/Clearwater
  • United States

A nature preserve is, by definition, a natural habitat where animals and plants are protected, and kayaking is a great way to see the natural beauty, plant life, and wildlife that can be found there. But imagine, as you glide through the protected, peaceful waters in your kayak, if your view could include not only all of the natural beauty above the water but also what’s underneath your kayak as you paddle along.

That’s the beauty of clear kayaking in pristine Shell Key Preserve , a 1,828-acre preserve in the mouth of Tampa Bay about 12 miles south of St. Petersburg. The preserve includes a 195-acre barrier island known as Shell Key.

My husband Dean and I took a clear kayaking tour in February with our friends, Andy and Mary. Here are some tips to know when you go.

Looking for a place to stay? Here are our picks for the best beach hotels in St. Petersburg, Florida.

View from the launch point

1. Go With a Guide

The advantage of going with an outfitter is that they take care of all the gear and provide a guide who can tell you all about the remarkable ecosystem of the surroundings as you paddle.

We booked a noon tour with Get Up and Go Kayaking , who says they are the first clear-kayak touring company in the United States.

Our 2-hour tour took us to the launch point where we met our guide, Bria, got into our kayaks, paddled past a shoreline of expensive homes out into the key, and crossed clear waters along a shoreline of mangroves.

Our destination was the beautiful Shell Key Beach, where we had a chance to get out of the kayak for about 20 minutes to walk the beach or sit and relax. Then we continued our tour as we looped around through shallow waters to an amazing mangrove tunnel and back to the launch point.

Pro Tip: Get Up and Go Kayaking trips launch from Billy’s Stone Crab restaurant in Tierra Verde. On the drive there, you’ll need to pay a one-dollar toll using cash, coins, or SunPass .

Kayaking Shell Key Preserve

2. Choose From Day Or Night Tours

As of this writing, Get Up and Go Kayaking offers five to 6-day tours per day, including a sunset tour, plus a night tour called a glow tour .

We selected a day tour because of timing, the distance from our lodging to the launch point (we were staying in central Florida and didn’t want to get back too late), and because we thought we’d see more wildlife that way.

The sunset tour offers a chance to see the sunset over the key and then turn on color-changing, waterproof LED lights. According to a video on the website, the glow tour is a tour run completely in the dark, again, with LED lights and a guide leading the way.

  • No previous kayaking experience is necessary.
  • The outfitter will send you a waiver; to save time, sign it online before you go.
  • The tandem kayaks have a weight limit of 425 pounds per boat and 250 pounds per seat.
  • Wear comfortable, quick-dry clothes and bring sunscreen and a water bottle. If you take the night tour, Get Up and Go Kayaking recommends you wear a shirt with long sleeves, long pants, and apply bug spray underneath your clothes, because apparently, mosquitos like Shell Key Preserve, too.

A beautiful day for kayaking Shell Key

3. Five Tandem Kayaks For A Small-Group Experience

Get Up and Go Kayaking tours are small and personal. They only take 10 people per time slot (five tandem kayaks) at one time. It’s great to go with a small group, but that also means tours can fill more quickly.

Keep this in mind when you make your reservation. Our first choice was a Saturday tour, but by the time we checked (the Wednesday prior), that date was sold out. Fortunately, the tour on Sunday still had room for us.

Our group of five kayaks meant we were always within earshot of the guide, and throughout the tour, we could easily stay together as a group.

Gnarled “stilt” roots of red mangroves

4. Learn About Fascinating Red And Black Mangroves

Our guide, Bria, is a native Floridian who has been guiding tours for about a year. She told us about the mangroves and the important role they play in the delicate ecosystem of the preserve.

Red mangroves are the most salt tolerant of the three varieties in Shell Key and can be seen closest to the shoreline. Additional research tells me they have distinctive roots (fittingly called “stilt roots”). Black mangroves live just above the line of high tide. They build up the soil and help feed the ecosystem.

Birds at Shell Key Preserve

5. Watch For Wildlife And Sea Life

Part of the fun of this tour is the wildlife we could see above — and below — the water. The website tells me dolphins, rays, turtles, and even small sharks can be seen on these clear kayaking trips. There are also seasonal attractions: In summer, kayakers might see manatees and roseate spoonbills (birds), and in winter, white pelicans.

Unfortunately, we didn’t see any of that. Above the water, we saw cormorants floating, diving, and drying their wings. We also saw many other birds, including snowy egrets and terns. Shell Key Preserve is an important sanctuary for migrating birds that nest and winter there.

Jumping Fish and Underwater Sights

We also saw mullet (fish). Bria identified the mullet for us when we saw them jumping out of the water. Underwater, we saw seagrass (important food for migrating manatees), conch and intricate spiral, ruffled casings (their egg sacks), and various other small sea life.

The beauty of a natural setting is you never know what wildlife or sea life you are going to see.

A peaceful stop on Shell Key Beach

6. Enjoy Shell Key Beach

We beached our kayaks at Shell Key Beach and got out. Bria hung back with the kayaks but told us to talk through a short path lined with trees to get to another more secluded beach where we saw a lone sunbather and a long stretch of beach. We walked along and enjoyed the view, beach treasures, the rhythmic waves, and the beautiful day.

Pro Tip: Shell Key is a small barrier island; there are no facilities here. Bring your essentials and as they say, “Take only photos, leave only footprints.”

Gorgeous reflections in the mangrove tunnel

7. Paddle Through A Mangrove Tunnel

If the tide is high enough, and it was for us, the tour takes you through a short but breathtaking mangrove tunnel. This is the place where we were told to “grab a root and stop,” and Bria told us more about the trees and water.

Since we didn’t see a lot of unique wildlife on our trip, this experience of kayaking through a mangrove tunnel made the tour. It was surreal to “park” our kayaks inside this natural tunnel where the mangroves had grown together, and the reflection of the trees and water was gorgeous.

I could have camped out here for much longer. But soon, it was time to head back, so we kayaked out of the tunnel to the other side and back to the launch point.

Post-Kayak Bonus: Eat At Billy’s Stone Crab Restaurant

After our tour, we decided to check out Billy’s Stone Crab restaurant . We hadn’t researched it, we just decided to try it because it was our meeting point for the kayaking tour, and that made it convenient. I must admit, I was skeptical, thinking it was a sub-par option that capitalized on their captive, kayaking audience. I was wrong.

Little did we know Billy’s has been serving up seafood for more than 50 years. Although we didn’t try their namesake stone crab (available October through May and caught in their own traps), our group of four enjoyed wild-caught jumbo gulf shrimp, zesty “dang-bang” shrimp tacos, large sea scallops, and a limited-time special: a whole Maine lobster. All delicious!

Returning to the launch point

The Choice Is Clear

One of the joys of kayaking in a nature preserve is that you can never be sure what wildlife you will see, but you are sure to enjoy it all the same. If you get the chance to kayak in Shell Key Preserve, the choice is clear. Take it!

I hope these tips help you enjoy the clear kayaking awaiting you at the beautiful Shell Key Preserve.

Pro Tip: Only water vessels (private boats or public shuttles) are allowed in the preserve, but if kayaking is not your thing, you can check out the Shell Key Shuttle .

Clear Kayak Tour Shell Key St Pete

GUIDED KAYAK TOUR

Clear kayaks through shell key.

We've created a guided kayak tour, centered on our transparent Clear kayaks, taking you for a fascinating look at the Shell Key Preserve, and its ecosystem of mangroves. Our professional tour guides provide an interesting narration of the local wildlife at Shell Key, and the amazing century-old mangrove tunnels. The entire clear-kayak tour operates within the protected waters and mangroves of the 1800 acre Shell Key Wildlife Preserve in Pinellas County. These waters are well traveled by Dolphins, Manatees, Rays, as well as a variety of shore birds, including pelicans, egrets, herons, cormorants, osprey, and sometimes roseate spoonbills.

Social-Distance-Compliant.jpg

You will tour through the mangrove tunnels, and then pull your kayaks onto the beach of Shell Key. While there, you'll have the opportunity to step out and stretch your legs. It's also the perfect place to collect shells and sand dollars. Then we all get back into our clear kayaks and take a straight-line back to our starting point. In all it's approximately 4 miles of paddling through the Shell Key preserve on our clear kayaks.

Expectations

Please be advised that kayaking is a physically strenuous activity. This tour is a 4-mile paddle, and you must be in at the least a moderate physical condition to complete the tour.

This is a tour of a nature preserve, away from civilization. If you are averse to mud, ants, insects, or wild brush, this tour may NOT be for you.

Minimum age is 8yrs old. Children 14 and under must ride tandem with an adult.

$59 per person on single kayaks

$54 per person on tandem kayaks

Trips run 7 days a week, but departures vary. Call ahead for exact departure times.

You can purchase tickets online or by phone!

Clear Kayak through Scenic Shell Key Preserve

Embark on a Clear Kayak Adventure in Shell Key Preserve! Dive into a world where nature meets adventure. Navigate through serene mangrove tunnels, bask on untouched white sand beaches, and immerse yourself in the quest for vibrant marine life at the heart of Shell Key Preserve.

Nestled at the southernmost tip of Pinellas County in the Tampa Bay Area, Shell Key Preserve is a treasure waiting to be discovered. Located in the charming town of Tierra Verde, it’s a stone’s throw away from the historic Fort De Soto State Park and the unspoiled beaches of St. Petersburg.

Our journey begins at the iconic waterfront seafood haven, Billy’s Stone Crab. A favorite among locals, this restaurant is strategically positioned on the preserve’s edge, allowing us to seamlessly launch our clear kayaks into the mesmerizing waterways of Shell Key.

clear kayak tours st petersburg fl

As we paddle, if the tide is high, our first enchanting stop is a mangrove tunnel. Here, nature has crafted a canopy of intertwined mangroves, offering a cool shade and a window to a marine world teeming with fish. Look up, and you might spot diverse bird species making their homes amidst the branches.

Next, we set our sights on the pristine beaches of Shell Key Preserve. Accessible only by boat or kayak, these beaches are untouched havens of tranquility. Irma’s Pass, a natural inlet birthed by Hurricane Irma in 2017, channels the crystal-clear waters from the Gulf of Mexico into the preserve. As the sun casts its golden rays, the water sparkles, reflecting the myriad hues of blues and greens from the sandy depths. And for shell enthusiasts, the shoreline offers a rich tapestry of unique shells waiting to be collected.

Our expedition culminates with a serene paddle along Shell Key’s mangrove-fringed coast, a sanctuary for birds. Here, it’s common to spot majestic Great Blue Herons, vibrant pink Roseate Spoonbills, and playful Cormorants swimming beside your kayak.

Guiding you every paddle of the way, our expert guides ensure a safe launch, unveil hidden mangrove secrets, share insights about the local ecosystem, and guarantee an unforgettable experience on the water. Join us and uncover the captivating wonders of Shell Key Preserve!

Why We Do What We Do

Here is a little backstory on me…I grew up in Pinellas County, and have been boating, fishing, and kayaking at Shell Key Preserve since I was a kid. Much of the county has been developed and built up, but the natural beauty and slow pace of the preserve have stayed the same. My mission is to share this beautiful ecosystem with you at a price that anyone can afford because I enjoy sharing the Florida I grew up with and making new friends. I look forward to giving you the best kayaking adventure in the Tampa Bay area.

Want to go find the endangred Manatees? Summer is NOT a good time. Most all the manatees are far out in the Gulf of Mexico. January 1 till March 31st is the Official Manatee season. The Gulf is too cold for the Manatees and they come in to the spring fed rivers & springs in the winter months. Never say Never though - as the manatees travel along the beach and Intra Coastal waterways coming and going.   If anyone can find manatees, KC is your guy. For summer, Islands of Adventure is the best trip, allowing for shelling, snorkeling and seeing the most beautiful pristine - uncrowded beaches and islands on Floridas West Coast.

THE ULTIMATE KAYAK ADVENTURE!

Kayaking in St. Petersburg Fl – Everything You Need to Know

By David De Haan

Last update: December 12, 2022

kayaking-in-st-petersburg-featured

It’s not a complete Florida experience if you don’t go out into the water. And what better way is there to explore the waterways than by kayak?

Kayaking is the best way to explore the Sunshine City. Clear blue-green waters, pearl-white beaches, stunning mangrove tunnels, and beautiful wildlife; what more could a paddler ask for? Kayaks are silent and allow you to get close to nature without disturbing the animals and access the best secluded spots.

There are lots of gorgeous kayak trails to explore all around St Petersburg. If you have no idea where to start, don’t fret. Here is everything you need to know about kayaking in St Petersburg Fl.

The Best Places to Kayak in St. Petersburg Florida

Regardless of what you’re looking for, there is a perfect kayak trail for you around St Pete Beach. Here are some of the top ones.

1. Weedon Island Preserve

Weedon Island Preserve in Pinellas County covers 3190 acres and has quite a rich history. Not only is it a designated archeological area, but it is also home to a wide range of wildlife. You can spot sharks, spoonbills, wood stork, dolphins, and bald eagles.

If you’re looking for a thrilling kayak tour and a place to take breathtaking photos , the Weedon Island Preserve is perfect.

The most popular trail for paddlers is the South Paddling trail, which is a 4-mile self-guided kayaking loop. It has some of the most amazing mangrove tunnels and if you’re lucky, you may have manatees swimming alongside your kayak.

There is nothing better than paddling peacefully under mangrove canopies in the company of local wildlife.

2. Fort Desoto Park

Fort Desoto Park is another must-see area and a favorite among kayakers. The park’s natural beauty offers a one-of-a-kind kayaking adventure.

Fort Desoto comprises five islands or keys, with Mullet Key being the main one. The 1136-acre park is especially nice for families and has stunning beaches and kayak trails to explore.

While on your kayaking trip, you won’t have to look hard to find beautiful sights, including mangroves, oyster beds, and different species of native birds. Dolphins are also pretty common in this area and, occasionally, you’ll see manatees too.

The kayak trails on Fort Desoto Park offer a great paddling experience for beginners and experienced kayakers alike. However, if you want to get off the trails and enjoy a true Florida experience on your own, you can do so. There are boat ramps all around St. Pete Beach from where you can launch your kayak and paddle freely.

3. Shell Key Preserve

Shell Key Preserve is found in Tierra Verde, Florida. The preserve includes Shell Key island, a barrier island that’s perfectly tucked away from noise and crowds. This 2.5-mile long island is only accessible by boat and it’s undeveloped so don’t expect to see any facilities such as restrooms or restaurants. Most of it is also closed to the public for conservation purposes.

There are many kayaking spots for kayakers of all skill levels. If you’re a complete newbie you can find a kayaking company, like Island Kayak Tours, that will guide you to a shallow saltwater preserve where the water is only about waist-deep.

You will have the best kayaking experience paddling through breathtaking mangrove tunnels and maybe even enjoy the company of dolphins and manatees.

Go during the weekend if you want a peaceful and quiet experience. The island can attract a lot of visitors during the weekend.

4. Caladesi Island

While in St. Petersburg, you should consider taking a trip to Caladesi Island. It’s like paradise and the beach here looks like something out of a painting.

The island is only accessible by ferry or private boat. Alternatively, you can just kayak there. It is more affordable and you will enjoy picturesque views along the way.

Caladesi Island is perfect for wildlife and bird watching. You’ll see lots of birds, fish, and crabs. Depending on how lucky you are, you may spot bald eagles, manatees, and dolphins on your trip.

The kayak trail goes through a mangrove forest; you’ll have a canopy over your head and clear blue water under you. If you make it to the end of the trail you’ll exit to beautiful seagrass beds.

You can customize your trail and explore the Schammer homestead ruins if you’re feeling adventurous.

Our guests see manatees and dolphins all year long. We practice "passive observation" of the wildlife. We show you how to have an amazing encounter where the animal chooses to approach you. Our guests see manatees 99% of the time and dolphins almost as often. Let us help you make a memory you'll never forget.

.We do daily tours at Fort DeSoto and many other locations throughout Pinellas County . These places are typically calm and shallow waters with a lot of marine life to see, & of course dolphins & manatees. There are numerous mangrove islands as well as beautiful islands with white sandy beaches and great shelling. Between Dec & April, we also go to other locations where our kayak renters are very likely to see manatees. Dolphin can be seen at Fort DeSoto & Shell Key year round, however manatees are usually only in this area between May & November. Whatever the time of year, we have a very high success ratio of our renters seeing manatees and/or dolphins. We're taking glass bottom boats & glass bottom kayaks to a whole new level. manatee dolphin tours glow kayaking eco tour kayak tours tampa St petersburg
