Chrysler Voyager Not Changing Gear – What Could Be Wrong?

Patrick Davis

  • July 10, 2023

After making its debut in 2021, the Voyager is now the face of the Chrysler minivan. However, there have been some questions about the transmission not shifting into gear. What could cause this issue? Below we have listed out the possible culprits.

Common reasons for this to happen:

  • Low fluid in the transmission
  • Low fluid in the master cylinder
  • Failed brake light switch
  • Bad sequencers
  • Failing transmission
  • Running out of battery
  • Bad shift solenoid

These issues might seem intimidating as you try to understand how to diagnose them yourself. That's why in this article, we will discuss each of these culprits and how to troubleshoot them. In addition, we will take a deeper dive into these transmission issues and how to solve them.

Chrysler Voyager Not Changing Gear - What Could Be Wrong?

The Chrysler Voyager is a rebranded version of the Dodge Grand Caravan that was discontinued in 2020. Chrysler reintroduced the minivan in 2021 after a six-year hiatus, touting it as "The Ultimate Cargo Van." The Chrysler Voyager was available for purchase at all Chrysler dealerships. However, minivans are only as good as they drive, so read on as we discuss possible reasons why your Voyager isn't shifting gears properly.

Low Fluid In The Transmission

When your car is not shifting gears properly, this could be due to low fluid level in the transmission. To determine whether or not you have low transmission fluid, check the dipstick. If it is below the minimum line, then this could be your issue. To fix this problem, you should top up the fluid to the required level. Check with your owner's manual for the recommended transmission fluid for your Voyager.

It is also important to use the best transmission fluid you can to help increase your vehicle's transmission life. Again, check your owner's manual for the recommended transmission fluid, or contact your local dealer for more information.

Low Fluid In The Master Cylinder

The master cylinder is responsible for shifting gears by transferring hydraulic force from the brake pedal to all other components in your Chrysler Voyager. To diagnose this issue, you will have to inspect the fluid level in your master cylinder while checking for any leaks in the brake lines attached to it. If the fluid is low or there are leaks, then this could be why your gearbox isn't shifting gears. Therefore, you should top off your fluid and replace the brake lines if necessary.

Failed Brake Light Switch

It may seem weird that a brake light switch would cause your Voyager not to be able to switch gears, but it could actually be the issue!

The brake light switch is responsible for changing gears. The brake light switch sends off the signal to shift when the brakes are engaged. If this signal fails, then your car will never shift into gear.

You should inspect this part by disconnecting it from the wire harness and using a multimeter to see any power on the 12V DC mode. If no voltage is present, then you should replace this part with a new one.

Bad Sequencers

For your car to switch gears, the gearbox requires information from the ECU or Engine Control Unit. This information includes vehicle speed and engine RPM, both of which have to be communicated for the gearbox to know how fast the vehicle is accelerating and what gears should be engaged.

If this connection is broken, then the Voyager will never shift into gear. Therefore, you need to check your wire harness for any loose connections or damaged wiring. In addition, you should inspect all solder joints on the ECU and Engine Control Unit connectors and check if the ECU and Engine Control Unit connector pins are corroded.

Failing Transmission

Hopefully, this isn't the reason, but a failing transmission is another reason your Voyager isn't shifting gears. If the gears aren't engaging properly it could be due to a faulty transmission.

To diagnose this issue, you should check for any leaks in the vehicle, noises that don't sound right, and excessive heat from the transmission. If you spot any of these issues, then it might be that your Chrysler Voyager needs a new transmission, and you should replace it with a refurbished one.

In addition to this, you should get a mechanic to inspect your transmission fluid, and test drive the car. A good mechanic will be able to tell if your Voyager needs a new transmission or not.

Running Out of Battery

Batteries provide power to the gearbox, so if your Voyager is not shifting gears, it could be due to a faulty battery. If the voltage is lower than 12V, this can cause problems with the gearbox, and you should replace your battery with a new one. You will have to disconnect and reconnect all terminals on the battery after you have replaced it with a new one.

In addition, you should check that all connections are tight and secure. You can do this by disconnecting and reconnecting them in the correct order, which will ensure that each wire is connected correctly.

Bad Shift Solenoid

If all of the above checks out, your Voyager might have a failing shift solenoid or solenoids. The shift solenoid controls the flow of transmission fluid, which allows gear changes to occur. If this component has failed, you should replace it with a new one, which should solve any issues about not shifting gears!

What are the signs of a bad shift solenoid?

The shift solenoid is responsible for the gear selection in your car. When it malfunctions, you will not be able to shift into gears properly, and you need to replace this part if you have any of these issues with your Voyager:

  • Erratic behavior when shifting gears.
  • Loud noises while changing gears.
  • The transmission fluid leaking (you will feel this while checking the fluid level in your master cylinder).
  • The gearbox overheating.

If you have any of these issues with your Voyager, you should replace your shift solenoid with a new one. You can get it replaced by a mechanic or directly buy the part yourself and fit it into your car.

Where is the shift solenoid located?

The shift solenoid is located on the left side of the gearbox. You will find it near the middle part of your transmission. It is quite big and is wrapped around with a layer of heat insulation. It would be best if you took out some bolts to access it and disconnect all wire connectors attached to it before removing them.

How do you reset your transmission?

To reset an automatic transmission, you will need a transmission scan tool. You can purchase these online or go to a local mechanic.

If this does not solve your problem with shifting gears, then you should take your car to the local Chrysler dealer, and a technician will inspect it in more detail and determine what is causing the issue so that they can fix it for you!

Will disconnecting the battery reset the transmission?

No, disconnecting the battery will not reset your transmission. You may have a faulty transmission or issues with one of the solenoids. You can follow the checklist about not shifting gears, which should help determine what is going on with your car.

Why is my reverse gear not working?

Without enough transmission fluid, the gears of your reverse gear might become overheated and malfunction. If this happens to you while driving forward, it would be difficult for you to move in a backward direction.

The car may not shift into reverse gear because there is a problem with the transmission position sensor. It is responsible for telling the car's computer where it is positioned, and if it malfunctions, you may not be able to select the reverse gear.

The worn-out valve body is also another common reason why the reverse gear is not working. Again, you can check this by inspecting the valve body and looking for any leaks inside or underneath the car.

A faulty shifter mechanism might also be the reason why your reverse gear is not working.

A fluid leak might also be the reason why your reverse gear is not working, so check all of your hoses for signs of leakage. A worn-out cable can also prevent you from shifting into reverse gear.

As you can see, there are many reasons why your reverse gear may not be working properly, and if it feels like it is over your head, then contact your local dealer to avoid causing further damage.

The Chrysler Voyager is a reliable and versatile vehicle that can get you where you need to go. If you are having trouble with the gear shifter, though, we recommend checking for leaks or noise before anything else. If your car still isn't shifting gears properly after trying all of these checks, then it may be due to one of the issues mentioned above, and this is something that your local mechanic can help with!

Chrysler Grand Voyager 2.8 CRD automatic transmission problem (with video)

  • Add to quote

Hello all, I have been browsing this forum very long but I couldn't find an identical problem. Vehicle is 2009 Chrysler Grand Voyager with 2.8 CRD VM Motori diesel -Transmission shifts very well between P-R-N-D and from 1 to 6, very smooth. -Mostly shifts well when I slow down until full stop But, sometimes it attempts to do engine brake from 6 to 1 (goes through every single speed), it shifts down through every single speed and sometimes does it harshly and the vehicle starts to shudder at full stop, feels like it is trying to choke itself. In this case I shift lever to N position and back to D. Short and sweet, mostly it feels like transmission releases the turbine very well when I slow down. But sometimes it doesn't want to release and it goes all the way down with engine brake and harshly. Excuse my english, it is not my native language, but I am looking for a solution for this problem. Soon I will travel long distance with this vehicle. 165000 kilometers on odometer Transmission oils changed 1000 km back (previous owner) and I have no idea about how transmission used to work before the oil change. I tried to reset transmission module with Bosch EsiTronic, no joy, I tried to do "quick learn" with Bosch but it doesn't want to. No error codes. Here is the video recording of the problem: Problem starts at 0:50 when I begin to slow down and stop. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OBg3gJCGFJc

It sounds like your lock-up torque converter or solenoid is sticking. The solenoid would be the less expensive fix.

Thank you for the suggestion, I will try changing the solenoid and report back. Also, yesterday I shifted to N and back to D, engine stalled.

8 New Minivans With The Most Cargo Space In 2024

Minivan parked by trees

Minivans are some of the most versatile vehicles you can find on the market. Ever since the creation of the world's first minivan , this type of ride was designed to be lighter and more maneuverable than full-sized trucks while still having plenty of space. If you have a big family that constantly goes on road trips, or if you often buy a lot of large items at once, a minivan might turn out to be a pretty good option. But just how much cargo space will you actually be able to use?

When it comes to minivans, cargo space can vary greatly depending on your needs. You can consistently get over 100 cubic feet of space with all chairs folded no matter what modern choice you go for, but your options become limited if you want to fit more people inside. To keep this in mind, this article will focus on the cargo space of eight modern minivans with the seats unfolded, making it clear how much space is available at a bare minimum. This article will also focus solely on modern minivans, counting vehicles from the 2020 model year onward.

Dodge Grand Caravan — 31.3 cubic feet

2020 Dodge Grand Caravan on display

The Dodge Grand Caravan is one of the oldest vehicles on this list thanks to its 2020 model year being its latest version. It also ends up having the lowest amount of cargo space with all seats up, offering around 31.3 cubic feet. This number jumps up to 140.3 cubic feed when all seats are folded down, but this is still low when compared to the competition. The greatest benefit of Dodge's offering is the fact that its Stow 'n Go style allows its seats to actually fold down into the vehicle's floor, but this isn't an exclusive feature by any means.

In 2020, Dodge discontinued the Grand Caravan , leaving the brand without a minivan option. It still lives on in the form of the Chrysler Grand Caravan, which actually has even more cargo space. 45 cubic feet with the seats up is even higher than pretty much all other minivans on this list, and around 145 with all seats down is an impressive result as well. But the Chrysler variant is only available in Canada, making it a nigh-impossible choice if you live elsewhere.

Chrysler Voyager — 32.3 cubic feet

Chrysler Voyager parked

The Chrysler Voyager is another minivan that met with an unfortunate end not too long ago. It was discontinued after its 2021 model year, making the Pacifica into the only remaining Chrysler minivan for consumers outside of Canada. New models have been in production after this, but these are only available for businesses instead of individual consumers, so you aren't likely to find a brand-new model from 2022 or later. Either way, it doesn't change how much cargo space you'll find in a modern-day Voyager.

Chrysler's Voyager reaches just a little bit higher than the discontinued Grand Caravan, offering 32.3 cubic feet with the seats up and 140.5 cubic feet with all of them folded down. This doesn't put it  much higher in the end, but if you're the type to pack everything possible into your ride, then every little bit of extra space will help. However, you might also find that there isn't much that separates this minivan from its still-in-production counterpart. The Chrysler Voyager has roots in the Pacifica minivan , and these roots extend to cargo space as well.

Chrysler Pacifica — 32.3 cubic feet

Chrysler Pacifica on display

As previously mentioned, the Chrysler Pacifica shares a lot of aspects with its Voyager counterpart. Cargo space is virtually identical in both minivans, with the Pacifica also having 32.3 cubic feet with all seats up and 140.5 with all seats down. The biggest difference is simply the fact that the Voyager is no longer available to the average buyer while this minivan is. Therefore, it's much easier to find a brand-new Pacifica without having to look for vehicles that have been sitting and waiting to be sold for a few years.

Even with these distinctions, the Pacifica still ends up being somewhat on the small side compared to other new minivans. Our review for the 2021 Chrysler Pacifica AWD praised what space it had, but if you're only looking at what you can haul with all of your seats up, you'll end up missing out on quite a few cubic feet. Still, the Pacifica has far more space available than any basic car and most SUVs, so the upgrade will still feel impactful if you're coming from a smaller vehicle.

2021-2024 Toyota Sienna — 33.5 cubic feet

Toyota Sienna hybrid on display

If you're looking for a brand-new vehicle, you'll likely want something that's designed very well and will last a long time. Luckily, some of the best years of the Toyota Sienna are its latest models, with the versions from 2021 to 2024 offering similar features and specifications. This extends to cargo space as well, with the minivan offering 33.5 cubic feet with all seats unfolded. On paper, this puts it a step above previous minivans on this list, making the Sienna a more welcoming choice for larger families.

If you need extra space, however, the Sienna is going to seem very lacking overall. The second row seats of this minivan can't fully fold or be removed, vastly limiting space to a maximum of around 101 cubic feet. This leads to the Sienna having the least amount of maximum space of any minivan on this list, though this distinction only applies if you don't need any seat other than the driver's. The modern Toyota Sienna is still quite competitive in terms of overall cargo space, though there are other newer options — as well as older ones — with greater offerings in that area.

Kia Sedona — 33.9 cubic feet

Kia Sedona on display

Even though the Kia Sedona nameplate has been discontinued , leading to it basically being rebranded as the Carnival, there are some distinctions to keep in mind for this older model. From the third row of seats, it has 33.9 cubic feet of cargo space, increasing to 142 cubic feet once all rows are folded or removed. While this makes the Sedona fall very short compared to its modern-day Carnival counterpart, it still rises comfortably above newer Sienna and Pacifica models. The only issue is finding a model that's new and not used, with options becoming scarce even within the secondhand market.

If you're willing to rely on models that fall under the "used" label, you'll still be getting a lot of bang for your buck — especially compared to the aforementioned Toyota and Chrysler options. But If you're willing to push ahead to the Sedona's successor, you're better off saving up some extra dollars for that. Even outside of cargo space, the increased power and other features make the Carnival a flat-out upgrade in just about all aspects. Still, it's not a bad idea to keep the Sedona in mind as a more budget-friendly option for those still looking for lots of space.

Honda Odyssey — 38.6 cubic feet

Honda Odyssey parked

The Honda Odyssey is among the best selling minivans of the past decade in the U.S ., and it's one of the few to already have a 2025 model year. It's also especially distinct with its cargo space measurements, at first seeming to be not much better than the Chrysler Pacifica or Voyager at 32.8 cubic feet with the seats up. However, there's more to the story than that, with the seats within being very adjustable in terms of positioning. Thanks to this, the Odyssey's cargo space — even with all seats up — can reach as high as 38.6 cubic feet, far above most of its competitors.

This staggering amount of space doesn't end at the minivan's third row of seats, either. With everything folded down or simply removed, the Honda Odyssey has at least 140.7 cubic feet of space,  increasing to a staggering 155.7 cubic feet when all the necessary adjustments are made. Not a single other minivan on this list can reach this number, making the Odyssey the clear choice for those who want to maximize their storage. If you're not able to work well with these adjustments, however, there are still some minivans that can allow similar maximum capacities while having even more space behind all available seats.

2020 Toyota Sienna — 39.1 cubic feet

2020 Toyota Sienna parked

Some time ago, we  compared the Honda Odyssey against the Toyota Sienna , found that the Sienna won out in spite of its lower storage capacity. While this holds true when looking at the numbers for modern releases of each vehicle, the 2020 Toyota Sienna blows this comparison out of the water. This is partially thanks to its available space with all seats up, climbing above the Odyssey at 39.1 cubic feet. If you're willing to remove the second row seats, its maximum capacity can even reach as high as 150 cubic feet, making the 2020 model an even greater rival to the Odyssey than its newer counterparts.

The main reason why later models of the Sienna have less space seems to be primarily due to other safety features. Airbags are built into the backrests on the second row, providing greater safety at the cost of storage restrictions. It's still possible to remove these seats, but not in a way that's nearly as user-friendly as the 2020 Sienna. If you'd prefer space over a couple of extra airbags, you might end up getting more bang for your buck by going with this older Sienna model.

Kia Carnival — 40.2 cubic feet

Kia Carnival on display

The Kia Carnival builds upon its predecessor to be one of the most spacious minivans in production today. Even with all seats up, the Carnival manages to break through the ceiling of its competitors, hitting 40.2 cubic feet of space. Its total amount with all seats down doesn't quite manage to reach the Honda Odyssey's staggering capacity, but it's still able to trade blows with other competitors by reaching 145.1 cubic feet. Regardless of having a larger family or just needing as much space as possible, you're unlikely to be disappointed with a Kia Carnival.

Of course, what you get out of these minivans — including the Carnival — can vary depending on how flexible you are with what you're carrying. These measurements will differ if you decide to rest some boxes on the seats beside you, or if you have an odd number of people huddled in the minivan. There are other factors to consider, as well, including how well-made the interior might be and whether the minivan can even handle the weight of whatever you want to store inside it. Even if the Kia Carnival has the greatest "minimum" space, you might be able to get more use out of lower-capacity choices if you're willing to be creative.

2010 Grand Voyager 2.8 Crd Automatic Gearbox Issues.

Asked by Apache , September 30, 2019

  • Ask a question

Hello all, my first post on the forum and hoping to get some sound advice and help.

I have a 2010 Chrysler Grand Voyager 2.8 CRD with 59,000 miles on the clock. I bought the vehicle a few weeks ago aware that there was an issue with the gearbox, in that it wouldn’t select higher gears and was essentially in limp home mode.

I took it to a garage in Belfast that is supposed to be an Automatic Gearbox specialist. They had the vehicle for four days and succeeded in getting the vehicle to select all gears. I was informed that there had been a problem with the solenoid and they had replaced it. I was charged £1,470. I also changed the battery to the correct Optima version as the one fitted was the wrong one and dead.

A few days later I noticed that the vehicle started to judder when accelerating through the gears. At first it was between 40-42 mph and then between 50-60mph. I went back to the garage in Belfast and was advised it was likely an issue with the torque converter and that an additive to the gear box oil may resolve the problem. The garage added the additive at no charge and whilst there was a slight improvement the vehicle still juddered. It now judders between a wider spectrum of speeds.

I returned to the garage this morning and was informed a new/refurbished torque converter would cost in the region of around £750 and that there would be a similar cost to fit it.

I sought a second opinion from another garage who specialise in Chrysler’s and they informed me that the best course of action with Grand Voyager gearboxes was to: 1) buy a second hand gearbox from a scrap dealer (2) have my existing gearbox refurbished or (3) purchase a refurbished gearbox.

Having made enquires a second hand gear box with 66k on it will cost me £1,500 (incl. of VAT), but this would be my least preferred option as there’s no guarantee this gearbox is problem free. Having my existing gearbox refurbished will cost in the region of £1,800. I’m of the opinion that this would be the best option and worth the extra £300. Both these prices are not including removal/fitting, so all in all pretty expensive. Would any of you have any thoughts on the possible problem and best course of action ?

Thank you in advance for any help or assistance you can offer.

Think you just have to bite a bullet and do a refurb.

At least you will get 12month warranty.

I had my mk4 refurb for 1600 in North London.

Just quick question. My gearbox is not locking in any gear except 6th. Which means if you slow down engine goes to idle straight away and no engine breaking is happening. Anybody knows if I have a fault or this is normal?

How much was ur initial cost for the car?
